Sun, 28 Feb 2021 - 37min - 207 - The Husband Poisoner - #192
After World War II, Sydney experienced a crime wave and it was women who were the perpetrators. The household poison thallium, normally used to kill rats, was the murder weapon to kill husbands and other inconvenient family members. Unlike arsenic or cyanide, thallium is colourless, odourless and tasteless; victims were misdiagnosed as insane malingerers or ill due to other reasons. Dr Tanya Bretherton has delved into these cases of these women and the ways and reasons why they committed their deeds for her book The Husband Poisoner. Sun, 14 Feb 2021 - 44min - 205 - The Vanishing Criminal - #190
There was a time in Australia where crime was hectic - armed robberies, a racket in stolen goods like stereos that could be sold quickly, an explosion in the heroin trade, shocking gun crimes including at Hoddle Street Melbourne, Strathfield Plaza in Sydney and Port Arthur in Tasmania . Even former Prime minister the late Bob Hawke and his family were directly touched by the impacts of the drug trade when he and then wife Hazel spoke to the nation about their daughter’s heroin addiction. By 2000, Australia had the highest rate of burglary, the highest rate of assault, sexual assault and robbery and the second highest rate of motor vehicle theft among 25 countries included in an international crime victim survey, included the United States, the UK and Europe. But then something happened. Researchers Don Weatherburn and Sara Rahman explored the downward trend in crimes that’s become the book The Vanishing Criminal. Wed, 27 Jan 2021 - 08min - 202 - Spotlight Series: Stalking Australia: She ain't no Mary Poppins
Another instalment of our Spotlight series, where we showcase one of our favourite podcasts. Stalking is prevalent in Australia. There are hundreds of cases reported every year. These people’s existence have been besieged by a stalker. Survivors often are voiceless and have no place to tell their stories. This podcast is giving a voice to these victims. A place to tell their stories. Hopefully we can help others who are in this terrible situation to fight back. Bringing up children is a hard job any day of the week. But throw into the mix two young children with maladaptive behaviour, and a young mother who has just undergone spinal surgery, leaving her in a wheelchair during recuperation. Now, what was needed here was a nanny who could fly in like Mary Poppins and help Shannon with the children and chores. What flew in was a mother's worst nightmare. Twitter : Stalking Australia @Stalking Austra 2 Facebook : Stalking Australia@Stalkingaustralia If you or someone you know is being stalked please reach out for help: Literally millions are stalked every year, yet there is still so much stigma, silence, and shame around this subject. It’s time we speak up. Together, we can all break the silence on this unacceptable, illegal, and far-too-widespread behaviour. Tue, 01 Sep 2020 - 49min - 183 - Victorian Rape Survivors Silenced - #174
Warning: please be advised this episode contains accounts of sexual assault. Listener discretion is advised. Journalists Nina Funnel and Sherelle Moody discovered a very big problem with a new piece of legislation passed in Victoria in February 2020. They’ve been helping rape survivors lobby the Victorian Attorney-General Jill Hennessey for several months demanding a fix for the problem without meaningful engagement let alone success. On August 26, Nina published an opinion piece about the legislation on news.com.au which has caused major upheaval in the survivor community and terse acknowledgement from Government, (along with a healthy dose of gaslighting from certain sections of the media.) Nina Funnell joins us with the facts, as does a newly silenced survivor. 1800RESPECT if you or someone you know has been effected by sexual assault. https://www.1800respect.org.au/ The #LetUsSpeak initiative and campaign. https://rasara.org/let-us-speak Show notes for Episode 174: Your hosts are Meshel Laurie and Emily Webb With thanks to Nina Funnell and Anonymous Rape Survivor Like us on Facebook Follow us on Instagram or Twitter Support us on Patreon Visit our Bookshop Listen on Apple Podcasts Listen on Google Podcasts Listen on Spotify If you have any information on the cases covered by this podcast, please contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000. Megan Norris was one of our very first guests on Australian True Crime. Megan is the only author to have interviewed Cindy and they spent many many hours together in the weeks, months and years after the event, as Cindy moved from supporting Robert and believing his story about a coughing fit causing a terrible accident, to coming to terms with the fact that he'd planned and carried out the murder of her children to punish her for leaving him. It's an intimate and harrowingly close observation of a woman accepting the unacceptable. Wed, 10 May 2017 - 46min - 9 - The Killing Fields: Inside Australia's Most Evil Prison
Goulburn Prison houses some of Australia's most evil and depraved criminals.
Known for a time as "The Killing Fields", it's a place where plastic toothbrushes are filed down into weapons, where the springs had to be removed from bed mattresses because inmates would fashion them into weapons. Where prisoners are raped and slain in the showers, and where notorious backpacker killer Ivan Milat sawed his own finger off and tried to send it to the High Court of Australia.
Meshel Laurie and Emily Webb go behind the cyclone fencing to find out just how creative these prisoners can get when it comes to evil acts.

What makes a victim? They say once you get to know the victim, you'll discover the perp. But this well-liked suburban mother Nanette Ellis was an unlikely victim. And yet she was stalked by a sinister stranger trying to run her off the road. Rocks were thrown at her car. Her windscreen smashed. A bucket of paint upended over it. Tyres slashed. And then she was murdered. Brutally stabbed to death in her own home in Boronia in Melbourne's east.
Following the 30th anniversary of Nanette's death, Meshel Laurie and Emily Webb check in on her family, talking to her son Craig about the aftermath of the unexpected murder, how his younger brother coped with finding the body, plus another mystery that shook this family.

Wed, 05 Apr 2017 - 38min - 4 - On Father's Day
It was Fathers Day, 2005. Robert Farquharson had just spent the day with his three sons, on an access visit. While returning them to their mother, his car veered off the road, and plunged into an icy dam. Robert escaped. But his three children, Jai, Tyler, and Bailey, all drowned. It made headline news around the country. Was it a freak accident? Or revenge murders? Farquharson maintained his innocence. His wife, Cindy Gambino, stood by his story. And then, something changed.
This is one of the most controversial, high-profile and protracted legal cases in Australian criminal history.
Join Meshel Laurie, Emily Webb and Investigative journalist and author Megan Norris as they go beyond the news cycle to chronicle the seven-year case, and the devastating consequences of what happened next.

What was the first thing he always did on a crime scene? And what is the one question he'd ask himself, every single time?
