Mon, 15 Apr 2024 - 256 - Honora Parker: “Deadly Diary Entries”丨MURDERISH Ep. 159
When two people meet, it’s exciting when there’s a mutual, instant affection for one another. It doesn’t always happen but when it does, it’s special. On rare occasions, however, a seemingly special human connection can actually be a bad thing, and in even more rare instances, it can lead to deadly consequences. The case we’re examining in this episode begs the question …would someone have died if two people had not had the opportunity to meet? A 1954 murder case out of New Zealand shocked the world due, in part, to the highly unlikely perpetrators. Honora Parker was savagely murdered on June 22, 1954. Though her murder case was easily solved, a striking revelation about the case didn’t fully come to light until 40 years later. Mon, 08 Apr 2024 - 255 - Best of MURDERISH: E70 "Tricia Todd, Faith & Forgiveness"
In April of 2016, Air Force veteran and hospice nurse Tricia Todd mysteriously vanished from a tranquil beachside town. The 33-year-old mother of one was vivacious, compassionate, and well-liked in her community. No one could ever imagine she would abandon her young daughter, and the notion of someone wanting to harm her was equally unfathomable. Mon, 01 Apr 2024 - 254 - Mark & Jacob Iskander: “Will Privilege Sway a Socialite’s Punishment?“ | MURDERISH Ep. 158
On September 29, 2020, the Iskander family of six went out for an evening stroll in their Westlake Village neighborhood having no idea of the tragedy that lay ahead. On that same evening, wealthy socialite Rebecca Grossman was having drinks at a local Westlake Village restaurant with Royce Clayton and Scott Erickson, two former major league baseball players. After downing margaritas, Grossman and Erickson got into their expensive cars and headed toward Grossman’s nearby condo to hang out. At some point, the two decided to race each other through the residential neighborhood. At that exact moment, Nancy Iskander and her three sons were crossing the street. Before they could respond, Rebecca Grossman and Scott Erickson came racing toward them in their vehicles fueled by bravado tequila. One of the vehicles struck two of the Iskander boys, Mark and Jacob, killing them. Three and a half agonizing years later, Rebecca Grossman went on trial for Mark and Jacob’s murder. The headline-making trial resulted in a surprising verdict. Mon, 25 Mar 2024 - 253 - Bad Surgeon: “Dr. MOCKiarini” | Serial Streamers TV Club
In this episode of Serial Streamers Jami recaps the docuseries, Bad Surgeon: Love Under the Knife. The 2023 Netflix docuseries highlights the story of Dr. Paolo Macchiarini, who is a world-renowned thoracic surgeon known for his work in regenerative medicine. For years, people believed Dr. Macchiarini was a trailblazer in the medical field and someone who worked tirelessly to save lives by transplanting lab-made organs into patients. What people didn’t know was that Dr. Macchiarini was extremely reckless in his approach and fully aware that his poor track record, coupled with faulty plastic organs, would very likely lead to death. Yet, the conman persisted. Jami gives listeners a solid Cliffs Notes version of the docuseries, and doesn’t hold back on how she feels about the man who she believes is a low-budget version of George Clooney’s ugly distant cousin, at best. Mon, 18 Mar 2024 - 251 - The Molalla Forest Killer: “Forensics in the Forest”丨MURDERISH Ep. 157
In 1987, 25-year-old Oregon native Jennifer Smith was viciously murdered in a Denny’s parking lot. She had no idea how important her death would end up being. Jennifer’s determination to not go down without a fight led investigators to other victims whose loved ones may have never seen justice served had it not been for Jennifer. The person responsible for a string of senseless murders was consumed by an evil bloodlust. His true form was hidden beneath a deceptive veneer. Those in his life only saw what he wanted them to see. He was perceived as a loving family man and successful entrepreneur. Lurking beneath the surface, however, was the worst kind of predator. Someone who only experiences joy when others are in agony. It would be a long road to capture the man deemed the Molalla Forest Killer, and an even longer road to bring the serial killer to justice. In this episode of Serial Streamers Jami is joined by Criminologists and fellow podcasters, Dr. Meghan Sacks and Dr. Amy Shlosberg. The women discuss the Netflix documentary: Lover, Stalker, Killer which details the murder case of Cari Farver and the woman who was responsible for her untimely death, Liz Golyar. Jami, Meghan, and Amy share their thoughts on this bizarre and tragic case from the perspective of being women who work in the True Crime space. Meghan and Amy’s commentary on this case is particularly insightful given they are both seasoned Criminologists and also because their podcast, Women & Crime, focuses on crimes involving female victims, perpetrators, and women who work in the criminal justice system. Toward the end of the discussion, Jami and Meghan are surprised to discover they both share a personal connection to one of the crimes committed by Liz Golyar and they each share their stories. Fri, 08 Mar 2024 - 249 - Introducing: In the Blood
IN THE BLOOD is a new true crime miniseries, hosted by Ben McKenzie ("Southland", "Gotham") that asks why it took the state of Texas three trials to convict Ronald Trimboli, of a triple murder, if he was actually guilty? One of the first murder cases in America to use DNA, atechnology that was in its infancy at that time, this story would pit developing science against questions about lack of motive, a clear alibi, andat least one alternative suspect - that one of the victims explicitly told the police might try to murder him. A story about questions of innocence or guilt that stretches decades, from the crime in the 1980s, all the way through three trials, a DNA re-test, and potential new evidence discovered in just the last few years. Check out The Devil Within: A Season in Hell. A series of random shootings, targeting young women with dark hair, causes panic in New York City. Twenty-four year old postal worker David Berkowitz, an admitted Satanist, would later claim his neighbors dog was possessed by a demon that was ordering him to kill. The police were powerless to help, so much so that they reached out to the Mafia for assistance in getting the killer, known as The Son of Sam, off the streets. Mon, 19 Feb 2024 - 244 - American Nightmare: “Detective MusTURD Sucks” | Serial Streamers TV Club
In this episode of Serial Streamers, Jami recaps the Netflix docuseries American Nightmare. In 2015, a 9-1-1 call came in to the Vallejo PD. It was a man claiming that his girlfriend, Denise Huskins, had been abducted from his home by perpetrators wearing wet suits. The man, Aaron Quinn, laid out an elaborate story for detectives who did not believe him. The media dubbed it the “Gone Girl” case due to the similarities it had to the movie. Law enforcement accused Aaron and Denise of perpetrating a “Kidnapping Hoax” which may have caused them not to properly investigate the alleged crime. As it turned out, the stranger-than-fiction story was true and a suspect was identified. Jami provides a full recap of the docuseries and doesn’t hold back on her opinions of the authorities involved in this case. In this episode of Serial Streamers, Jami recaps the Lifetime docuseries The Prison Confessions of Gypsy Rose Blanchard. In 2016, Gypsy Rose was convicted of second degree murder for plotting and helping to carry out the murder of her mother, Clauddine “Dee Dee” Blanchard, who allegedly abused Gypsy Rose and suffered from munchausen syndrome by proxy. Gypsy Rose was paroled in January of 2024 and has been documenting her post-prison life on social media since then. Some people believe Gypsy Rose is a master manipulator who shouldn’t be celebrated, but others believe she committed murder in order to save herself from her abusive mother. Fri, 19 Jan 2024 - 237 - Grady Stiles Jr. “The Dark Side of Lobster Boy” | MURDERISH Ep. 153
Grady Stiles Jr. came from a long line of sideshow performers who had a genetic condition known as ectrodactyly. When this defect occurs in the womb, the middle digits of the hand and foot are missing and the remaining ones fuse into two parts. Grady was born with two-fingered hands that resembled lobster claws, and footless legs ending just below the knee. Like many of his relatives, Grady capitalized on his physical defects by appearing in traveling carnivals. It’s easy to imagine that a lifetime spent as a public spectacle could be emotionally taxing. But Grady had a coping mechanism: alcohol. For Grady, drinking heavily blurred out the pain of ridicule and rejection. Unfortunately, alcohol also made him incredibly mean and violent. This tendency toward violence would manifest into murder, with Grady being the perpetrator. Later, the man known as “Lobster Boy” would find himself on the other side of murder …falling victim to two bullets in the back of his head. Mon, 08 Jan 2024 - 235 - Escaping Twin Flames: “Twin FLOPS Universe” | Serial Streamers TV Club
In this episode of Serial Streamers, Jami recaps the Netflix docuseries Escaping Twin Flames. Jami tries to suppress her rage but finds it difficult because one of the Twin Flames Universe leaders, Jeff, is a real piece of work. Twin Flames Universe is an organization that operates eerily similar to a cult in that members are pressured to disconnect from family, spend their hard earned money on classes that guarantee they’ll be matched with their “twin flame,” among other cult-like characteristics. In reality, the Twin Flames Universe guarantee is a twin FLOP because nobody seems to get what they were promised by alleged relationship scammers, Jeff and Shaleia Ayan (not their real names, of course). The TFU leaders also allegedly pressure members into certain gender-affirming surgeries that they may not have chosen for themselves. Jami shares all of her hot takes on this disturbing, cult-like organization and doesn’t hold back on her feelings about its leaders. Spoiler alert …she HATES them. Sat, 06 Jan 2024 - 234 - Ashley Ellerin: “The Killer Next Door” | MURDERISH Ep. 152
Ashley Ellerin bid farewell to her father at Los Angeles International Airport in February 2001. That evening, the eye-catching 22-year-old fashion student had plans with handsome young Hollywood actor, Ashton Kutcher. The pair were headed to a Grammy Awards after-party at a popular nightclub on the Sunset Strip in LA. Kutcher, then 23, pulled up to Ashley’s bungalow behind Grauman’s Chinese Theater around 10:45 PM on February 21, 2001 nearly three hours behind schedule. He knocked on Ashley’s front door. When she didn’t appear, Ashton knocked again. A call to Ashley’s phone went to voicemail. He tried the door handle, but found it locked. Guessing she might be punishing him for being so late, the former Calvin Klein model peered through the window. The lights were on but there was no sign of Ashley, only what he believed to be the remnants of a spilt glass of red wine from a party she’d hosted the night before. Only later would Ashton learn the red streak wasn’t wine …it was Ashley Ellerin’s blood. Confused and disappointed, Kutcher retreated to his car and headed out under the glow of the Hollywood sign. Not long before Ashton arrived to pick up his date, a serial killer, later dubbed the Hollywood Ripper, had also arrived at Ashley’s home. Little did Ashton know, he’d been cast in a role he never expected nor wanted …an eyewitness to murder. Follow Jami on Instagram & TikTok @JamiOnAir and join the Serial Streamers true crime TV club! Mon, 01 Jan 2024 - 233 - Best of MURDERISH: E20 - DJ Fickey "Seeking Justice"
A series of three calls came into Walker County 9-1-1 the afternoon of October 3, 2016. The caller said a man shot himself and they needed an ambulance. A woman can be heard wailing and screaming in the background …she’s hysterical. An officer arrives on scene shortly after the third call was finished, and an investigation ensued. However, according to the victim’s family, a bungled investigation, misinformation in official reports, lying witnesses and the fact that all witnesses, and the victim, were drug users …led to an incorrect determination of the manner of death. The victim’s family strongly believes a killer is free and no justice has been served in this case. Join me as I tell the story of Donald Edward Fickey, Jr (“DJ”). MURDERISH now has a Patreon page! Fri, 22 Dec 2023 - 231 - Meagan McCarthy / Ari Young: “Captured on Video” | MURDERISH Ep. 151
September 4th, 2019 was a beautiful morning in the desert city of Victorville, California. For most residents in the neighborhood of the 13,000 block of Cabazon Court it was just another morning: quiet and uneventful. Inside one residence, however, chaos was brewing, and it would soon spill out onto the street, shattering the peace and quiet with screams and gunfire. By 8:35 that morning, 26-year-old Meagan McCarthy, a San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Deputy, would be brutally beaten and shot at with her own gun. And the man who attacked her, 21-year-old Ari Young, would be shot six times by responding deputies. Surprisingly, Ari survived and went on to defend his actions in court. With much of the mayhem caught on video, the incident remained in headlines for years. The disturbing images scrutinized and reviewed on social media and television over and over, as tensions between law enforcement and the public rose across the nation. Four years later, the case came to a close with one of the most hotly debated verdicts in recent history. Was there a massive miscarriage of justice? Or, did the jury see something others didn’t and get the verdict right? In what appeared to be an open and shut case, everyone involved would be reminded that what appears on video ..isn’t always what it seems. Mon, 11 Dec 2023 - 228 - Tupac Shakur: “New Developments, Old Suspect” | MURDERISH Ep. 150
Iconic rapper Tupac Shakur, in his lyrics and persona, foreshadowed his own violent end. Tupac’s bold, brash and fearless demeanor earned him a legion of fans, but it also made him a target. Whether intentional or not, Tupac's “thug life” mantra blurred the lines between Hollywood gangsters and real ones, a threshold from which there was no turning back. Now, nearly 30 years after the prolific rapper was gunned down in a hail of bullets near the Las Vegas Strip, the public may finally get confirmation of the men and the motive behind one of music’s greatest mysteries: Who killed Tupac Shakur? Why did it take authorities over 25 years to file charges in such a high-profile case when so many apparently already knew who was responsible? Who were they trying to protect? And what’s changed? Mon, 20 Nov 2023 - 225 - The Bling Ring: "Thirsty Thieves" | Serial Streamers TV Club
In this episode of Serial Streamers, Jami brings on a VERY special guest …her best friend since eighth grade, Jessi! Jami and Jessi both watched The Real Bling Ring: Hollywood Heist on Netflix beforehand, and they share their spicy opinions about the docuseries in this hilarious episode. The ladies also share their own personal experiences with petty crime, as they committed a few together back in their teenage years (allegedly). Jessi calls Jami out for being the “mastermind” of their shenanigans back in the day, and Jami reveals her softer side as she shares her experience being a teenage mom whose child needed surgery to treat a life-threatening medical condition. The ladies laughed, cried, and they definitely brought the humor with their commentary on this docuseries. Fri, 17 Nov 2023 - 224 - Best of MURDERISH - E113 Alexander Urtula: “The Power of Words”
In 2015, 17-year-old Michelle Carter was indicted on charges connected to the suicide of her 18-year-old boyfriend, Conrad Roy Jr III. In a controversial 2017 trial, a Taunton, Massachusetts jury found her guilty of involuntary manslaughter. A similar case occurred in May 2019, though it received much less publicity. Boston College students Inyoung You and her boyfriend Alexander Urtula had been dating for 18 months when he died by suicide. An investigation would uncover an abundance of abusive text messages from Inyoung in the months leading up to Alexander’s death. The Carter and You cases involved problematic text messages that many argue are what drove both victims in these cases to end their lives. But where does free will end and the power of suggestion take over? Is it possible to brainwash someone into ending their own life? Let’s see if we get any closer to answers as we explore Alexander Urtula’s case in this episode of MURDERISH. Let’s get social: Follow MURDERISH on Instagram & TikTok @MurderishPodcast. Fri, 03 Nov 2023 - 221 - Best of MURDERISH - Ep103 Dr. Teresa Sievers: "Lying in Wait"
When an alternative medicine doctor was found bludgeoned to death in her Bonita Springs, Florida home in the summer of 2015, friends and neighbors worried a burglar was on the loose, looking for his next random victim. Detectives with the Lee County Sheriff’s Office told the public that Dr. Teresa Sievers had been bashed in the back of the head after returning home early from a trip with her husband and two daughters. An online sleuth group wondered if Dr. Sievers’s death was connected to that of several other alternative medicine doctors throughout the country who had also died under mysterious circumstances in recent months. The slain doctor’s husband, Mark, had an airtight alibi. Who killed Dr. Sievers and why? The disturbing details of her murder would be revealed in time, and the answers rocked the community. Mon, 30 Oct 2023 - 220 - Dr. Henry Lee: “Smeared blood, Smeared Reputation” | MURDERISH Ep. 147
Convicted in 1989 of the brutal murder of 65-year-old Everett Carr in New Milford, Connecticut, Ricky Birch and Shawn Henning were sentenced to 50 years behind bars without any physical evidence tying them to the crime scene. At trial, prosecutors had to explain to a jury how the two men, then only in their teens, managed to beat and stab their victim over 25 times without getting a single drop of his blood onto their clothing. To do so, the district attorney’s office relied on the testimony of the state’s top pathologist ..a man very well known to true crime content enthusiasts. A man by the name of Dr. Henry Lee. Today, Dr. Lee is considered one of the country’s foremost experts on forensic science. Birch and Henning spent decades in prison substantially based on Dr. Henry Lee’s testimony at their trial. More than 30 years after they were convicted, new information came to light and eventually led to their convictions being vacated in 2020. Subsequent to that, Dr. Henry Lee’s reputation would come under intense scrutiny and he found himself in legal trouble. The question now rests in the court of public opinion: Did Dr. Henry Lee make a devastating error on the witness stand? Or, did a man who’s investigated some of the country’s most prominent crimes of the last three decades lie to obtain a conviction? Late in the evening on Friday, January 8, 1993, the employees in one particular restaurant in Palatine Chicago didn’t know at the time that they would not be going home that night. Hours after these workers began their closing routine, all seven of their bodies would be discovered inside of Brown’s Chicken, a popular restaurant chain. Upon entering the bloody scene, officer Ron Conley dispatched backup saying “Five in the cooler.” This tragedy was the worst mass murder in the Chicago area since 1966 when Richard Speck murdered eight student nurses in their dorm. On a Summer day in 1997, Lance Butler and a friend drove into the Rockies west of Denver. The pair pulled over to dip their feet into the stream below. A glance toward the water’s edge revealed a horrific sight. There, wedged between two rocks, was the lifeless body of a female dressed only in blue jeans. It was 14-year-old, Brandy DuVall, who’d been reported missing by her mother the day prior. Her injuries told the tale of a merciless crime. Months later, a tip led investigators to several suspects who’d go on trial for her murder. As it turned out, the tip resulted from an “unwilling witness” who said he hadn’t stopped the murder because he was afraid for his life. Tue, 05 Sep 2023 - 208 - Best of MURDERISH- E79 “Whitey Bulger: Robin Hood Mob Boss”
In one of the most egregious law enforcement scandals of the last century, the U.S. Government helped to cultivate and empower one of the most notorious murderers of our time. A man who was simultaneously hailed as both a savior and a devil, a protector and an oppressor, James “Whitey” Bulger’s story is complex and almost unbelievable. How did just another poor South Boston hoodlum rise to be the King of the Irish Mob, and reign without punishment for 20 years as the bodies piled up around him? How did he manipulate and stay one step ahead of law enforcement even after becoming a fugitive on the FBI’s most-wanted list, second only to Osama Bin Laden? Whitey Bulger wasn’t your average gangster, but his genius was facilitated by equally criminal men at every level of law enforcement. With their help, Whitey rose to power using violence, money, intelligence, and charisma. Whether it was karma, poetic justice, or a government setup, Whitey met his end violently and in a manner reminiscent of the countless murders he so easily committed. Join me as I walk you through the complex case of Mob Boss James “Whitey” Bulger. Fri, 18 Aug 2023 - 204 - Tristan Beaudette: “Murdered in Malibu” | MURDERISH Ep. 142
In June 2018, Tristan Beaudette and his brother-in-law Scott McCurdy had left their wives in Orange County to embark on a final camping trip together before Tristan and his wife Erica relocated to the Bay Area. Their home for the night …Malibu Creek State Park, near beautiful Malibu Beach. After a night by the campfire, Beaudette and McCurdy went to their respective tents and settled in for bed. Already asleep inside the separate tents were their most treasured possessions: Scott’s two boys, ages 3 and 5 and Tristan’s daughters, 2 and 4. Sometime after 1 in the morning on June 22, 2018, Scott was awakened by what he thought were fireworks. Then he heard Tristan’s daughters crying. Scott told his boys to stay put while he went to Tristan’s tent to investigate. There, he saw Tristan lying face down in the center of the tent and his daughters huddled together, crying. Tristan’s face was covered in blood. Given Malibu’s reputation as a safe beach town, nobody believed Tristan’s murder was a random act of violence. The community was shocked after an arrest was made and law enforcement alleged there was a monster in the Malibu Hills killing indiscriminately. Mon, 24 Jul 2023 - 199 - Michelle Carter: "Texting Murder" | Serial Streamers TV Club
On July 12, 2014 the body of 18-year-old Conrad Roy was discovered inside of his pickup truck. The teenager, who had a history of depression, died by suicide. At first, detectives had no reason to suspect foul play in Conrad's death, but they confiscated his cell phone anyway. After extracting data, detectives found thousands of text messages between Conrad and his girlfriend, 17-year-old Michelle Carter. The problem was that Michelle had been encouraging Conrad to kill himself in the weeks, days and minutes leading up to his death. The tragic incident then turned into a homicide investigation with Michelle Carter as the primary target. The Commonwealth v. Michelle Carter case was the first of its kind in that the defendant was being charged with manslaughter due to the virtual presence she had during Conrad's death. The prosecution claimed that her words led to Conrad's death. In this episode, Jami walks listeners through the case and breaks down the docuseries I Love You, Now Die: The Commonwealth v. Fri, 21 Jul 2023 - 198 - Lawrence Family: “Collateral Damage” | MURDERISH Ep. 140
When someone gets involved in the drug trade, violence usually isn’t far behind. It’s a dangerous path to tread where survival can hinge almost entirely upon alliances. If you piss off the wrong person, you might pay with your life. In the late 1980s, Missouri native Darrell Mease encountered an opportunity he couldn’t turn down. The 42-year-old carpenter was hired by Lloyd Lawrence, who happened to be a kingpin in a local methamphetamine ring. Instead of considering the danger he might face, Mease was blinded by dollar signs. This chance encounter set Mease’s life on a deeply violent trajectory. It would escalate into an extreme act of revenge outside a serene cabin in the Ozark mountains where an entire family would be murdered. In November of 1983, a mother and her three children were found “hacked to death” in their Bloomington, Illinois family home. Mon, 05 Jun 2023 - 189 - Ruth Pelke: “A Redemption Tale” | MURDERISH Ep. 136
In the spring of 1985, 78-year-old grandmother and retired Bible study teacher Ruth Pelke was found brutally stabbed in her Gary, Indiana home. For years leading up to the tragedy, her family had tried to convince her to move out of a neighborhood that had grown increasingly unsafe. But this was her home. The elderly white woman, who chose to see the best in everyone, believed her religious faith would keep her out of harm’s way. Ruth’s case wasn’t difficult to solve, yet it remains one of the most historically controversial. It involves prevalent social issues like juvenile incarceration, capital punishment, and racial bias. Ruth Pelke’s case made international headlines and it remains relevant nearly 40 years later. Anyone with information about Andrea Robinson’s disappearance should contact the Village of Hamburg Police Dept. at (716) 648-5111. Follow Jami and MURDERISH on Instagram & TikTok @JamiOnAir. When Daisy De La O was fatally stabbed in her own community, her friends and family quickly honed in on a fairly obvious suspect. Her case, however, garnered no leads or public attention ..until it was posted on TikTok. It was then that true crime social media jumped in to help. Thanks to the activity on social media about Daisy’s case, a suspect would eventually be identified but not before he slipped out of the area undetected. It has been said that social media can cause more harm than good for serious crime cases, but in Daisy’s case the posts on social media propelled it to a much larger audience and ultimately led to an arrest. Just a few days into 2023, however, Massachusetts investigators scrambled for answers when Ana was reported missing. She had a beautiful family, a promising real estate career, and enough income to rent two lavish homes. Was Ana inclined to start over somewhere else? Or did something ominous happen to make her vanish? Investigators soon found damning evidence, including grisly Google searches. Later this year, Ana Walshe’s family may get the answers they deserve as the man suspected of murdering her is expected to go on trial. Follow Jami and MURDERISH on Instagram & TikTok @JamiOnAir. Danielle Drohan was in her early twenties when she married a man more than 20 years older. The age gap wasn't the unusual part, though. Her husband, Michael Redlick, had previously been her stepfather. Against all odds, their controversial and rocky marriage lasted nearly two decades. It would all come to a grinding halt on January 11, 2019. That night, after a vicious argument, Michael was found dead in their million-dollar riverfront home. Was this deadly event the culmination of years of abuse? Or did something more sinister play a role in Michael’s death? Fri, 28 Apr 2023 - 184 - Stephen Smith: “Unsolved Murdaugh Mystery” | MURDERISH Ep. 134
Just after 4 AM on July 8, 2015, a call came into Hampton County emergency dispatch. A driver spotted a body in the center of a remote stretch of highway known as Sandy Run Road. The body belonged to 19-year-old Stephen Smith, a nursing student at nearby Orangeburg-Calhoun Technical College. There was nothing to suggest a vehicle had been involved in Stephen’s death, yet a hit and run would become the sheriff’s department’s official determination. The story didn’t sit well with Stephen’s friends, his family, or the South Carolina Highway Patrol. The circumstances begged several questions: Why would Hampton County make such a rush to judgment regarding the cause of death? Who were they trying to protect? And who was responsible for killing Stephen Smith? It would take eight years, and the widely publicized capital murder trial of Alex Murdaugh, for South Carolina authorities to admit that what happened that night in Lowcountry was no traffic accident, it was a homicide that many believe could be tied to the Murdaughs, Hampton County’s Royal Family. Mon, 24 Apr 2023 - 183 - Best of MURDERISH - E104 Vincent Chin: “Modern Day Lynching”
Since the 1880s, immigrants from all over the globe have arrived in the United States hoping to attain a better quality of life, the American Dream. Like so many immigrants before them, Lily and Ben Chin wanted their son Vincent to have more opportunities than he may have had in their native China. In the 1970s and 1980s, however, tensions were high between Japanese and American automobile manufacturers, and that discord extended beyond the auto manufacturing plants. It was at this time that 27-year-old Vincent Chin found himself in peril on the streets of Motor City. His story reminds us why this landmark case is still relevant more than 40 years later. Mon, 17 Apr 2023 - 182 - Christa Worthington: “Personal Life on Trial” | MURDERISH Ep. 133
While in her 20s and 30s, Cape Cod native Christa Worthington built a successful career in fashion journalism. She rubbed elbows with elite designers, wrote editorials for widely-respected publications like Cosmopolitan, and cycled through high fashion cities like Paris and London. Still, she felt a profound absence in her life that couldn’t be satisfied by any career advancement. As she turned 40, Christa realized she wanted to be a mother. When her daughter Ava was born, it was as amazing as she envisioned. In a cruel twist of fate, Christa’s joy was abruptly cut short. The events that unfolded on January 4th, 2002 would rip away the life she had carefully contrived, leaving behind a trail of utter devastation. This case brings up questions that aren’t easily answered and almost 20 years later, it’s still difficult to determine the truth. Follow Jami and MURDERISH on Instagram & TikTok @JamiOnAir. When feelings for another person run deep, people are often inclined to see the best in that person. It’s not uncommon for unsettling behavior to be excused rather than seeing it as a warning sign and acting on it. But this idealism can put someone in harm’s way without them realizing it until it’s much too late. When Nicole Montalvo went missing in October 2019, investigators quickly learned that a lot was going on in her personal life and sadly, her circumstances were not all that unusual. They didn’t know it, but a man with a gun was hiding in the bathroom. When the mass shooting was over, four people lay dead and a fifth badly wounded. The shooter’s total haul was less than $1,600 and the entire manic episode lasted less than five minutes. Most shocking . . . the mass murderer was only 19 years old. The 40-year-old mother of two wasn’t expecting anyone but answered the door anyway. She was greeted by someone wearing a clown costume and white face paint, clutching a flower arrangement and foil balloons. Marlene was delighted at the cheerful sight. Mon, 06 Feb 2023 - 171 - Anne Marie Fahey: “Perilous Privilege” | MURDERISH Ep. 128
How far does family loyalty go? Most of us would do anything to protect the ones we love. But where do we draw the line? Keeping dark secrets is one thing; helping to cover up a serious crime is an entirely different thing. In late June of 1996, Delaware politician Thomas Capano put his youngest brother Gerard in an impossible position. The married father of four stood to lose everything if his affair with the governor’s secretary came to light. Tom decided the only remedy was murder. But he desperately needed Gerard’s help to pull it off. After going to dinner with her secret lover on the evening of June 27, 1996, 30-year-old Anne Marie Fahey would never be seen again. Family members and the public were shocked and horrified to learn the grim details of her tragic death. Mon, 23 Jan 2023 - 169 - Robert Sorrells: “From the Big Screen to the Big House” | MURDERISH Ep. 127
A character actor who appeared in over 100 films and TV shows between the early 60s and late 80s, Robert Sorrells made a living playing bit parts in big productions: classics like Gunsmoke, Bonanza, The Twilight Zone. No matter the plot, the roles typically ended the same for Sorrells―with his character either firing a bullet, or taking one himself. His early filmography reads like an advertisement for the NRA: Gunfight in Abilene, Mosby’s Marauders, Death of a Gunfighter, The Ride to Hangman’s Tree. In a disturbing case of life imitating art, Sorrells, at the age of 74, gunned down two men at a bar near his home in Simi Valley, California, killing one and badly wounding the other. His victim: A 45-year-old painting contractor and father of one. The shocking July 2004 murder shined a spotlight on the psychology of aging actors, and begged the question: did a lifetime of being around fake movie violence make Sorrells more inclined to commit the real-life kind? Or, were the characters he portrayed all those years on film closer to reality than those around him realized? Mon, 09 Jan 2023 - 166 - Gerry Boggs: “Black Widow Bride” | MURDERISH Ep. 126
Some might say New Orleans native Jill Coit collected husbands as a hobby. Between 1961 and 1992, she was married 11 times to 9 different men. Some of these marriages were acts of bigamy - Jill married a handful of men while she was still legally wed to others. On the outside, it could appear that she was obsessed with companionship. But a deeper look at Jill’s life revealed a twisted, manipulative side - not a woman intent on finding true love. Her tendency to swap out husbands like designer shoes would lead one man to his death. 52-year-old Gerry Boggs was a lifelong bachelor until he fell into Jill’s trap. Soon people would learn about the tangled web Jill spun as a serial bigamist turned murderess, and how she earned the ominous nickname ‘Colorado’s Black Widow’. Once this episode airs, any dignity and self-respect Kari and I had will have been flushed down the toilet. But I have to say, it was welllllll worth it. Mon, 26 Dec 2022 - 164 - Dr. Thomas Burchard: “Killing Kindness” | MURDERISH Ep. 125
Kelsey Turner was the kind of woman who drew people in without trying. Her bleach-blonde hair and hourglass figure made her a natural model. In a sea of beautiful California women, though, modeling gigs weren’t plentiful enough to support her expensive tastes. Like many young women nowadays, she turned to online sites to sell amateur photos. By doing so, Kelsey caught the attention of many admirers. Among them was prominent psychiatrist Dr. Thomas Burchard. Despite pushing 70, he was infatuated with 25-year-old Kelsey and offered her ample financial perks to keep her happy. But the doctor’s attraction for Kelsey began to seriously cloud his judgment. It turned out his giving, sympathetic nature only made him more vulnerable to dangerous predators. Ultimately, that vulnerability led to the doctor’s demise. Become a MURDERISH | Behind the Mic member and get access to bonus episodes, ad-free episodes and many other exclusive perks. But behind the low-rise flaming eyeballs and perfect pinstripes, disputes about ownership and management kept co-founder Bobby Vaughn on edge. Mon, 05 Dec 2022 - 161 - Trevor Bartlett: “Suicide by friend, or Murder?” | MURDERISH Ep. 123
What would you be willing to do for your best friend? Tell a lie? Keep their darkest secret? Commit a crime? What if your best friend asked you to take their life? What would you do then? Trevor Bartlett and Mario Mills were best friends. On cold Wyoming nights, the pair would escape to Mills’ garage to drink, smoke and play cards until they could barely stand. Most times, the worst damage was some vomit and a splitting hangover. But on the evening of March 25, 2020, the result was far different. An early morning 911 call drew police to the nondescript home in a quiet residential neighborhood. Inside the garage cops found 37-year-old Trevor Bartlett, a loving father and loyal friend, shot through the head, dead on the cold concrete floor. Was it a suicide? Murder? Or something else? Mon, 21 Nov 2022 - 160 - Jessica McCormack: “#JusticeForJessica” | MURDERISH Ep. 122
When a 25 year old Jessica McCormack and her three young daughters disappeared suddenly in July of 2019, Jessica’s closest friends thought she was taking time away to decompress. They had conversations with her on Facebook while she was gone, but it soon became clear that the person on Facebook was just an imposter who’d hacked into Jessica’s account. Several weeks later, Jessica’s body was found on a highway in the Ozarks after apparently falling out of a suitcase that she’d been stuffed into. The shocking discovery prompted a search for Jessica’s three daughters. This would mark the beginning of an ongoing fight to find answers: who killed Jessica McCormack? To report information regarding the murder of Jessica McCormack, please contact the McDonald County Sheriff’s Office at (417) 223-4319, or try calling the FBI at 1-800-CALL-FBI. Mon, 07 Nov 2022 - 159 - Kelsey Smith: “Keep Marching On" | MURDERISH Ep. 121
When heading out to run errands, you fully expect to make it home safely. In June of 2007, 18-year-old Kelsey Smith went to the store, but she never made it home. No one could’ve predicted that less than two weeks after high school graduation, Kelsey’s life would come to a violent end. Outside a Target store less than 10 minutes from her childhood home, Kelsey was forced into her car and abducted. As Johnson County detectives frantically searched for the missing teen, the community struggled to understand how something like this could’ve happened in broad daylight.
