Early Friday morning, Israel conducted a "limited" strike on Iran in retaliation for Tehran firing a barrage of missiles and drones at the country last Saturday. Reports suggest Iran doesn't have immediate plans to respond to the most recent attack. However, U.S. lawmakers fear a wider Mideast war is on the horizon, with the House proposing several bills throughout the week. Israel carried out what has been described as a 'limited' missile strike against Iran in retaliation to Tehran firing more than 300 drones and missiles at Israel just days ago. The strike targeted a major air base and a nuclear site in Isfahan province about 200 miles south of Tehran. Meanwhile, two men are arrested in Germany accused of spying for Russia and plotting a bombing to undermine German aid to Ukraine. New York City police were called in by the President of Columbia University in order to break up an anti-Israel protest encampment. At least 100 anti-Israel protesters were arrested and hauled away in corrections buses. Protesters were calling for the destruction of Israel and shouting out support for the terror group Hamas. After 25 years at National Public Radio, Senior Editor Uri Berliner resigned Wednesday following backlash from fellow journalists regarding comments he made about NPR's political agenda. Berliner published an essay in The Free Press earlier this month critiquing his former employer's liberal bias, which allegedly increased following the 2016 election. Before his departure, Berliner was suspended from NPR for failing to secure approval to speak with other news outlets. Inflation is creeping back up, with the prices of common goods rising 0.4% in March from the previous month, according to the Labor Department. Yet, President Joe Biden continues to tout that his policies are working, saying that under his administration, inflation has fallen from its peak. However, polls suggest that his economic message is not resonating with voters. Congress is in crunch time to reauthorize the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act, or FISA, as it is often referred to. House Republicans have worked on reforms for the act, which they say has been misused over the past two decades to unlawfully spy on American citizens, who in some cases have not committed a crime. The deadline for reauthorization is set for April 19, but it has faced heavy pushback by GOP hardliners. The South African International Relations and Cooperation Minister Naledi Pandor in a recent speech said that any citizen that returns from serving in the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) will be arrested. The Russian invasion of Ukraine has been underway for over two years now, and lawmakers are urging Congress to approve nearly $60 billion of military aid. The bill, however, remains stalled in the House, with many debating the merits of funding this foreign conflict overseas. As millions of migrants continue to cross the Southern border, Republicans are pushing a bill that would keep noncitizens from being counted on the Census. The Census, taking place every ten years, decides the number of congressional seats in a state and how the federal government distributes billions of dollars in funds. Sen. Lawmakers on Capitol Hill are demanding TikTok's parent company, ByteDance, sell the social media app to an American owner or be banned in the United States. In a rare case, Jennifer Crumbley, the mother of Oxford High School shooter Ethan Crumble was convicted last month and could face up to fifteen years in prison for her role in the shooting. Prosecutors said she failed to warn authorities about threats her son had made. Now, Ethan’s father, James Crumbley, is also on trial in Michigan for manslaughter. One of the biggest challenges President Biden faces in his re-election bid is the economy. According to the latest FOX News poll, only 26% of Americans feel optimistic about where the economy stands. There's pushback on some progressive policies lately in liberal strongholds, spurred by crime. In San Francisco, voters passed two ballot propositions from the city's Democratic Mayor London Breed,  including drug screening and treatment for some city welfare recipients, though sobriety is not a requirement. The measure also changes police policy and procedure. Officers will now have more leeway to chase someone believed to be committing a felony or violent misdemeanor,  and they can use drones, facial recognition technology, and public surveillance cameras. In Washington D.C., the city council passed a crime bill that makes it easier for judges to keep certain violent suspects behind bars before trial, expands the definition of carjacking, and creates a new crime for organized retail theft. It also allows DNA collection after arrests--but it's limited to suspects in violent felonies and sexual assault misdemeanors--and only after a judge finds probable cause. Opponents of these shifts in San Francisco and D.C. have some concerns in common, including a focus on penalties instead of help and the potential for disproportionate impacts on minorities. Earlier this week, host Lisa Brady spoke to Rafael Mangual, criminal justice expert and the Nick Ohnell Fellow at the Manhattan Institute, about these changes, how effective they may be, and why Democrats across the country are changing their messaging on the crime issue. Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant this week said that the rising tensions with Hezbollah at the Lebanese border is bringing them closer to a military escalation against the Iran-backed paramilitary group.
