From being a part of the fast-paced machinery at NASCAR to working meticulously on a serene ranch, the shift that Taylor Moyer took is both unique and fascinating. His journey from being an engineer in a racing workshop to a farmer in North Carolina reflects his versatile skill set and adaptability.
As an engineer with a motorsport team, the NASCAR world brought with it a lot of fast-paced excitement for Taylor Moyer. The requirement for out-of-the-box creativity, coupled with the thrill of the race, provided an adrenaline rush like no other. Providing us with in-depth insights into the world of professional motorsports, Taylor journeyed through his 15-year experience with NASCAR.
From making a racecar faster, managing mechanical grip, and handling tons of pressure, to ensuring the team's performance, Taylor's role as a crew chief at NASCAR was filled with challenges and exciting outcomes. This role introduced him to the immense logistics, engineering intricacies, and the constant changes in rules and strategies associated with professional motor racing.
It was the craving for wide open spaces and simplicity that led Taylor to leave the pulsating world of motor racing. As he mentioned during his transition, he knew he needed to switch gears and move back to his love for farms, land, and cattle.
He bought an old run-down property in North Carolina, which he turned into a full-blown ranch, harnessing elements from his experience with NASCAR. He brought in the teamwork and dedication needed to run a successful ranching operation. He found solace in the slow-paced rural life and the opportunity to connect with nature more intimately.
Taylor's unique journey across two very different worlds yet surprisingly parallel, is inspirational. His love for team dynamics, precision work, and the outdoors is clearly evident in his story. This positive synergy between his two passions has made Taylor's transition from NASCAR to ranching a seamless one. His career transformation from the loud tracks to the quiet pastures isn't just about a job change; it's about meeting personal desires with a perfect blend of his professional skills.

Gail Fuller, hailing from Severy, Kansas, is a renowned figure in the realm of regenerative agriculture, known for his innovative and sustainable farming practices. With a deep-rooted passion for soil health and ecological balance, Fuller has dedicated his career to transforming conventional farming methods into regenerative systems that bolster biodiversity, enhance water cycles, and sequester carbon.
Fuller's journey in agriculture began on his family farm in Kansas, where he initially adopted traditional farming techniques. However, his perspective shifted dramatically after witnessing the detrimental effects of these methods on soil health and the environment. This realization spurred him to explore alternative practices, leading him to become an advocate for regenerative agriculture.
At the core of Fuller's philosophy is the belief that farming should work in harmony with nature rather than against it. He has been instrumental in promoting practices such as no-till farming, cover cropping, and rotational grazing, which not only improve soil health but also contribute to better crop yields and livestock health. Fuller's farm serves as a living laboratory, demonstrating the viability and benefits of these methods.
Beyond his own farming operations, Fuller is an influential voice in the agricultural community. He regularly shares his knowledge and experiences through speaking engagements, workshops, and collaborations with other farmers and organizations. His efforts have not only improved farming practices in his local community but have also inspired change on a broader scale.
Fuller's contributions to sustainable agriculture have been recognized with various awards and accolades. However, his true reward lies in the positive impact he has made on the land and in the lives of fellow farmers. His commitment to a healthier, more sustainable agriculture system continues to inspire and guide others in the field.

For this week's episode I am on the road at the excellent Regenerate conference put on by the Quivera Coalition in Santa Fe NM.
After three days of Conference, networking, meeting new friends and having some really open conversations my friend and previous guest Cole Bush (episode #28) sat down with me and her two right hand men to talk about how Cole has developed her business over the last two years since we last caught up.
Cole Bush, or Cole, a modern-day shepherdess and a visionary in regenerative agriculture. Raised in Southern California, Cole has circled back to steward 240 acres in the Ojai Valley, where she champions ecological land management through her work in education, advocacy, and innovative agrarian entrepreneurship. She's the co-founder of Shepherdess Holistic Hides, promoting ethically raised local goods, and leads the Grazing School of the West, preparing the next generation of graziers for impactful land stewardship. Dylan, the pioneering CEO of Boek House Hearth & Husbandry. A Southern California native, Dylan is a first-generation shepherd and rancher dedicated to reviving our connection with the land through regenerative agriculture. With a background in permaculture and holistic management, he's transforming landscapes and local food systems by integrating livestock into the ecology of the land, enriching it and the community with nutrient-rich, ethically raised produce. Dylan's work extends to leading roles in Shepherdess Land and Livestock and the Savory Institute's Land to Market program, embodying his commitment to sustainable land stewardship and cultural virtues.

In this episode, Chris Grotegut, a seasoned farmer from Hereford Texas, joins us on Zoom to talk about the history of feedlots in the area and the overuse of the Ogallala aquifer. Chris shares his experience of transitioning his farm from 60 center pivots worth of commodity crops to 20 and planting everything back to grass for grazing cattle. We also discuss the importance of farming food instead of feed, the fallacy of pumping ancient water with even older energy and calling it sustainable, and how living within our ecological means is crucial. Chris sheds light on aquifer recharge geology and how empires can collapse. On this episode of Ranching Reboot, host Brian Alexander interviews Wally Olson, a successful rancher and founder of Ranching.FYI. Wally shares his story of growing up in ranching and how he got started in the business. He also shares valuable tips on how to start a successful ranching business.
According to Wally, creating a high cash flow business is crucial to starting a successful ranching business. He suggests focusing on understanding how to use leverage, paying attention to opportunity costs, and taking a ranching for profit school to learn how to track the business. Wally also advises buying small amounts of animals and selling them when they are overvalued to create cash flow.
Wally and Brian also discuss the importance of writing down agreements, understanding the value of cow depreciation, and the potential for making money through heifer development. They also emphasize the importance of managing taxes and retirement savings, as well as the potential for making money in a down cattle market.
The episode also covers the challenges of buying a ranch with cows and the importance of succession planning. Wally and Brian suggest an LLC system where one acre equals one share and the ranch can be transferred to blood or non-blood members. They also discuss the possibility of a livestock marketing school in Sun City, which could be a gamechanger for ranchers.

Why It’s Getting More Difficult to Make a Living in Agriculture
In 2020, 1 million households started backyard flocks of chickens, so without doubt there’s a renewed interested in homesteading, self-reliance through food, and a mass disentanglement from our corrupt food system.
Joel Salatin of Polyface Farm in VA is here to talk about why small food producers are the future of the US food system and the obstacles we must overcome to thrive in America’s agriculture industry. He sheds light on how the homeschooling movement is a gateway to Libertarianism and homesteading food culture; a gateway that fosters a sensible culture of self-reliance and food independence.
We discuss the impact of issues like inflation, soil erosion, lack of support from the US government on small farmers’ ability to operate and feed their communities. You’ll learn how CSA and PMA programs, like the raw milk herd shares, help small farmers circumvent food regulations to get more food on more people’s plates. Then, Joel highlights the benefits of the European model of land tenure and the mission of The Rogue Food Conference, which he co-founded to educate and empower people to reclaim their fundamental right to food.
“We small producers… we unorthodox, alternative producers, we have answers. We’re the sandlot players… We’re the ones out here innovating… and if we can’t play the game, the game can’t advance creatively to solve problems because it can only move at the rate, pace, and creativity of the bureaucracies, and that’s a very slow pace.” - Joel Salatin
Joel Salatin and his family owns Polyface Farm in Swoope, Virginia, where they produce beef, pork, chicken, rabbit, turkey, lamb, duck eggs, lumber, and forestry products. Joel has authored 15+ books on everything from how to raise happier hens to starting and growing a successful farming enterprise.
