Some of you may or may not of heard the name Brian Barney, this little bowhunting ninja from Montana USA is a stand up guy, an unbelievable bowhunter and someone I get to call a good friend. Brian is well known for his own podcast Eastmans Elevated, many articles in Eastmans Magazines and featured in many of their films on Eastmans TV and Beyond the Grid with Dan Pickar. On my Elk hunt last year with Josh Rogers, we offered Brian to come down to Australia to hunt our Red Deer, Sambar and whatever else we could throw at him. Well it didn't take much arm twisting and the plane flights were booked. Australia's Youngest ever female shotgun Olympian, Aislin has tried to weave the sport into the field and the importance of both to the hunting community….  Its different story but I hope you enjoy it … Rob   Bio Aislin Jones developed an interest in shooting while following her father David Jones, around the Bairnsdale Field and Game clay target range from an early age. She started shooting in 2012 and switched from simulated field to skeet later that year. Jones competed in her first Australian Clay Target Association (ACTA) national championships at the age of 13, held at Wagga Wagga in 2013. The following year she won six medals at the ACTA national championships at Wagga Wagga and the National Women's Champion of Champions in the mixed 12 gauge/20 gauge event with a score of 99/100. In late 2014 she switched from American Skeet to ISSF skeet in order to achieve her Olympic and Commonwealth Games aspirations. At her first competitive ISSF skeet shoot in October 2014, she won the Victorian Ladies' Championship at Werribee Clay Target Club. In 2015 she competed in her first international competition, finishing 23rd in the junior world championships and 6th in the ISSF junior cup. In early 2016 she became the youngest winner of the Australian National Skeet Championship at the age of 15. Aislin Jones represented Australia in Women's Skeet at the Rio Olympic Games in 2016, finishing in 17th place. She was the second youngest Australian athlete, and the youngest of the 390 shooting athletes from around the world. At 16 years of age, she was also the youngest Australian shooter ever to compete at any Olympic Games In October 2017 she broke the Oceania Women's Skeet, junior and senior record and in January 2018, at the Australian Nationals in Echuca she won the Commonwealth championship, Australian Championship and High Gun. In March 2018 she won her first ISSF gold medal at the Junior World Cup in Sydney. She has been named in the Australian shooting team for the 2018 Commonwealth Games and finished 6th, after finishing second in the qualifying round.

Jason Spencer lives and breathes eating what you hunt, so much so that Jason has turned a hobby into a lifestyle, making the best of what he hunts. Jason has managed to avoid purchasing meat for many years and doesn't plan to change that anytime soon.   Two books and numerous cooking shows, Jason also has a passion for sharing what he loves. Tobie and Jason talk about where it all came from, where he hopes to go and a few hunting stories in between.

The high country desert of Nevada is a brutal climate with hot, dry, windy conditions throughout the day and dropping to almost freezing temps at night. . On this weeks episode, Herbie is joined by South Cox of Stalker Stickbows, in South’s home in Colorado. South Cox’s interest in archery started at the age of five when he found an old wood recurve under a neighbour’s house. Despite having no mentor and growing up in a vegetarian family during his younger years, the instincts of the hunter ran deep.  At 16, he shot his first deer with a bow, cementing a lifetime commitment to the sport. In 2007, with 20 years of professional woodworking experience, South took over Stalker Recurves, reviving a company that had been dormant for the better part of a decade. Combining both of his passions; a profound love of woodworking and archery, he enthusiastically dove into the new venture. His keen eye for detail and diligent work ethic can easily be recognized in the artistic changes, additions and technical advances in the bow lines.  In 1989, South’s first bowhunting article was published, spawning a new career that would eventually have him published in a half dozen different archery magazines, contributing to a couple of bowhunting books and earning him a position as Field Editor of Eastmans’ Bowhunting Journal, a position that he still maintains. In 2012, with the blessing of his wonderful wife Kyri, after 25 years in construction, South decided to “retire” and take up bow building full time. This week on the HCDU Podcast Rob Herbert sits sit down with Barry Howlett, Executive Officer of the Australian Deer Association , and discuss some of the difficult positions that the ADA finds itself in as the conduit between hunting groups, individuals and tedious government policy and legislation. We discuss membership numbers, growth and what increased membership could possibly mean to the ADA at a national level. Barry highlights the many and varied hats he is required to wear during his work hours and how his life with family is a highlight of many a tiring day. Rob discovers the complexities of his position and personally see the challenges set by a robust and large group of hunters ( 40 odd thousand in Victoria alone ) while having to brief ministers on upcoming issues. From a personal note the thing Rob took away from the interview with Barry is the small amount of membership numbers (6000 odd nationally) but Barry answers to close to 100000 hunters nationally on social media, public outcry and groups that don’t even focus their hunting on Deer. A huge part of why I started the podcast was to hear the stories of hunters, that slip under the radar, that are selfless and super humble. This day and age it seems that a large majority hunt for the ‘gram’ but thankfully there are still many that are all about there fulfilling their own quests. Pego has one amazing story. As I grew up reading Bowhunting magazines and finding idols amongst the photos, one hunter always caught my attention.   Darryl Bulger is a surfboard shaper by profession, excellent 3D Archer and a Bowhunter who has walked the walk.   Putting nerves aside, Darryl shares incredible stories of his early days of bowhunting and some from more recent times. This weeks episode comes to you from the Alpine National Park in the Victorian High Country of South Eastern Australia.
