Just outside Indianapolis; Indiana in the United States is Fox Hollow Farm, that is said to be haunted by its brutal past. This location was once the home of Herb Baumeister and his young family during the early 1990s. By day, Herb was a successful businessman who operated a chain of thrift stores. By night, Herb would cruise the nightclubs of Indianapolis looking for his latest victims.

When word of human remains being found on Herb’s property got out; people started to also talk about the paranormal activity that was said to occur at Fox Hollow Farm. This activity is said to still occur regularly even today.

In 2009; a psychological horror film was released that changed this horror subgenera forever. The movie called “The Orphan” tells the tale of a couple who’s marriage became strained after the stillbirth of their third child. This loss was very hard on the family, and as a way to move forward the couple decided to adopt a nine year old Russian girl named Esther from a local orphanage. The couple’s oldest son Daniel resents the family’s new addition, while their five year old daughter Max embraces having a new sister.

This is where things start to get strange. Esther starts exhibiting hostile behaviour towards animals and school mates, and she seems to have knowledge of someone older than her. When Sister Abigail from the orphanage decides to come to the house to check in on Esther, this is when the couple finds out that tragic events and incidents always occur around her. One of these was the deaths of Esther’s previous adoptive parents.

After a whole lot of bad happens, the family learns that Esther is not a nine year old girl after all, but actually is a thirty three year old woman who suffers from proportional dwarfism. She had spent her life posing as a child, and she was actually a violent serial killer who has murdered at least seven people.

Now…I am not going to ruin the movie for those who did not see it, but this one is a definite must see. The plot was very different for its time, but what most people don’t know is that this terrifying tale is actually based on a true story.

Jean Laffite was a privateer and smuggler who is best known for taking a little break from pillaging, to fight for the United States in defence of New Orleans in the War of 1812. But Jean was a pirate at heart. Right after this he went back to his pirating ways, and he made quite a bit of money. Local lore tells that Jean did not put his treasure in a bank, or spend it all before he died. It is believed that Jean buried a large treasure trove somewhere in the Bayous of Louisiana, or along the United States Gulf Coast.

In the old section of Edinburgh, Scotland is a place now known as the Royal Mile. This is a succession of streets that form the main thoroughfare of the Old Town of the city. It runs between two important locations concerning the royal history of Scotland: Edinburgh Castle, and the Holyrood Palace. This used to be the original main street, and off this are small alleyways and courtyards to the north and south.

These alleyways are called a close, which is an old Scottish term for entry, court, or alleyway. A close is considered to be private property versus wind’s which are an open thoroughfare. Because of fear of English attacks from previous wars; the closes in Edinburgh had very dense housing. They are narrow with tall buildings on each side with the poorer living at the bottom, and the rich living up top.

Mary King Close is located underneath the Edinburgh City Chambers on the Royal Mile, and is currently is being used as a tourist attraction. This is due in part to its reputation for hauntings since at least the 17th century, and it is said to be quite the paranormal hot spot.

The Amber Alert system is a messaging alert system that notifies the public, and asks for their help in cases of very concerning or life threatening cases of missing children. This system started in the United States, and is currently in multiple countries around the world. The goal of Amber Alerts are to quickly disseminate relevant information about a disappearance through a variety of sources including television, radio, and even personal cellphones to increase the chances of finding a missing child.

Studies show that in 76% of child abduction cases, the child is killed within three hours after their disappearance. This system is a way to have as many people aware of a situation as possible; in hopes that someone will see something to bring a missing child home safely. As of January 2, 2023; 1127 children were brought home through the United States Amber Alert system. But sadly; the little girl that this system was named after did not have this fate.

A few month’s ago my mom sent me an article over Facebook Messenger. It was from a group that I wasn’t part of, and because of that all I could see was the title of “Lizzie Halliday”. Winston Churchill was a man very well known in history. He was a British statesman, public speaker, and author who was Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1940 to 1945, and from 1951 to 1955. He rallied his people during World War II, and helped lead his country to victory. But after he rose in political prominence before World War I; Winston gained the reputation of having erratic judgement at times. People started distancing themselves from him until his response to Adolf Hitler’s actions helped develop a coalition with the United States and Russia. But after that relationship broke down; Winston was the one who warned the western world of the expansionist threat of the Soviet Union. This changed the geopolitical landscape of the world forever.

Winston was considered to be an honourable, charming, but a stubborn man. He was known to be defiant, arrogant, and a bit conceded. He was never afraid to take a risk, but he also stood firm on his beliefs. That’s why many think that he became a supporter of a woman known as the last person in Britain convicted as a witch…Helen Duncan.

Telling ghost stories is a tradition during the month of October. Some do this by sitting in a circle on the floor with the lights off. Others venture to their local cemetery on a moonlit night. Either way - people feel the tension in the air, and a hint of nervous excitement for the ghoulish tales to be told.

When people hear a ghost story; many don't believe that it can be true. But then in their mind, they start to wonder...what if it is true? What if the dark and mysterous things people say hide in the dark exist? Are these stories real, or are they just stories? But during Halloween all these questions seem to fall away. John Dee was a brilliant mathematician, astronomer, and alchemist who was an advisor to Queen Elizabeth I. He advocated for the creation of English colonies in the new world, which would help develop the British empire. He was considered to be a one man “think tank”, who was a visionary of the Elizabethan court.

But John was also heavily involved in astrology, magic, and the occult. He advised the queen based on this, and she believed that he was not just a trusted advisor - but also a powerful magician. As part of this; John had some objects that allegedly allowed him to connect with both angels and demons, and he used this information to advise the queen.

Hi my spooky friends…Halloween is almost here, and we at Horrifying History wanted to give you all some tasty treats.

Today is the first of several collaboration episodes that we have done to celebrate Halloween, and how better to start than tell some ghost stories with great friends. The first is from the group called the Tribe of the Greyhorn Pagans. Many people world wide believe in the existence of aliens. In recent polls; two thirds of both Americans and Canadians believe that there is intelligent life that exists on other planets. Scholars believe that public fascination with UFOs started in 1947 after a pilot flying in Washington state reported seeing disc-shaped objects in the sky with him. In the next decade; people thought that aliens were mostly benevolent intelligent beings, who came to our planet to offer advice or warnings.

Then came an event in September of 1961 that is considered to be the start of the public’s fascination concerning extraterrestrials. One night a couple was driving in the mountains of New Hampshire, and they saw a flying object in the sky. This is just the beginning of the event that still captivates people today.

Both in the past and today; droughts cause massive problems. It can cause poor quality, or shortages of drinking water. It can impact air quality as dry conditions can result in dust in the air. It also can result in forest fires.

A lack of rain can also cause low crop yields, which impacts food prices and can create food shortages. It also can cause an increase of disease, such as the West Nile virus that is carried by mosquitoes that breed in stagnant water. When there is a drought; many will go to extremes to try to find a way to make the rain fall. When California found itself in this situation 108 years ago; they were desperate, so they hired a rainmaker. The thing is that this may have worked! Was it one man’s gift, or an act of god?

The Battle of Gettysburg is one of the most famous battles of the American Civil War. It occurred from July 1 to July 3, 1863 in and around the town of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, and this battle had the largest number of casualties for this entire war.

This battle was the turning point of the Civil War after Union Major General George Meade’s soldiers defeated the Confederate army lead by General Robert E. Lee. This ended Lee’s attempt to invade the North, and afterwards he retreated with his army back to Virginia. But not everyone went home when this battle ended. It is estimated that between 46,000 and 51,000 soldiers from both sides had their lives end in this three day battle.

Soon after the battle ended; reports started to come in concerning paranormal activity throughout this area. From phantom cries of wounded soldiers to full body apparitions walking the battle grounds - Gettysburg is constantly reminded about their dark past.

Poorhouses, which were also known as almshouses or poor farms, were not a place that you wanted to end your days in. These places were tax supported residential institutions that took in those who could not support themselves. In these facilities; people were often given not enough food to eat, and what they were given were often unpalatable. They were forced into crowded and unsanitary conditions, where they had to do hard labour or domestic labour as a punishment created for those who suffered from poverty. As a result; many people became victims of this system, and one of these was a lady named Rhoda Derry.

When people think about witchcraft today; they think of the current Halloween stereotype of a witch…women in tall pointy hats with large noses stirring potions in a black cauldron while plotting their evil actions. But in the 17th century; witchcraft was a very real and serious crime for which a person could lose their life.

It wasn’t until 1736 that Scotland repealed the Witchcraft Act of 1563, which ensured that the prosecution of witches were banned. But this was too late for seven women who lived in the town of Paisley in the west central lowlands of Scotland.

On April 10, 1912; the R.M.S Titanic left England on its very first journey. For those on this ship, it was a very exciting time as they were about to take a transatlantic journey to New York City on what was said to be the most luxurious ocean liner of its time. Just five days later, this ship sank after sideswiping an iceberg.

The number of military and civilian fatalities caused by World War II is estimated to be between 50 to 56 million people, with an additional 19 to 28 million deaths being caused by war related disease and famine. Out of all the areas that this war was fought, none were active as long as the area called the Pacific Theatre. The constant war in this area triggered a civil war and famine that is estimated to have killed more people that currently live in the countries of Canada and Australia combined.

There were countless atrocities that occurred during this time, and some of the worst were caused by the operations of Unit 731. This biological warfare unit dove to new depths in what was already a genocidal war. Before this Unit was ended in 1945, it committed some of the most atrocious human experiments in recorded history.

When bad things happen, a person’s desire to survive automatically kicks in. For some this may come in the form of having a strong sense of determination and hope, and for others it may come in the form of having a strong support system or a sense of future purpose. Slightly south west of Chicago sits a cemetery who’s first burial occurred around 1834. There is about eighty graves there and through the decades; the cemetery fell into disrepair due to the elements, poor upkeep, and vandalism. This helps create the creepy atmosphere of this cemetery, but it is completed by countless sightings of ghosts. From a lady in white to a disappearing farm house, this graveyard is quite the supernatural hot spot.

Christmas…the most festive time of the year.
