Fri, 23 Feb 2024 - 23min - 424 - 422: Managing Tax Rate Uncertainties & Contribution and Decumulation Strategies with David Hulse, PhD
Today, I’m talking to Dr. David Hulse, recently retired Professor Emeritus at the Von Allmen School of Accountancy and the Martin School of Public Policy at the University of Kentucky. He’s a contributing author for federal taxation textbooks and has written about our tax system in several journals.
He recently published a white paper called Roth Vs. Traditional Account Contributions and Tax Rate Uncertainty in the Journal of Financial Planning. It’s a fantastic and informative paper, and we wanted to bring David onto the podcast to break his complex argument down into something simpler and allow him to answer your questions.
With that in mind, in this episode, we discuss the difference between different contribution and decumulation strategies with someone who’s implementing them in his own life as we speak, the changing pace of life for new retirees, and how many people use a mix of retirement accounts and tools to avoid costly mistakes in this phase of life.
In this podcast interview, you’ll learn:
Important facts that many advisors don’t understand about Roth IRAs compared to traditional ones. How to understand the government’s role as a “silent partner” in a traditional IRA. How to assess whether a traditional or Roth IRA is right for you based on whether or not overall (or your personal) tax rate is going to go up. Strategies you can use to address potential problems around required minimum distributions (RMDs) with traditional IRAs. Why David is using a mix of traditional and Roth IRAs across his retirement accounts. The reasons why there’s no simple “set and forget” strategy when it comes to retirement account planning. Our Market Outlook Webinar is live! Visit https://bit.ly/4bmHkUb to register.

Fri, 26 Jan 2024 - 30min - 418 - 416: Elder Justice: Taking the Initiative on Elder Abuse with Marie-Therese Connolly
Today, I’m talking to Marie-Therese Connolly. MT Connolly is a lawyer working in the courts and in Congress to tackle an ongoing and fundamental issue of elder abuse–both physical and psychological–as well as financial exploitation and wrongful deprivation of rights.
She was instrumental in architecting the federal Elder Justice Act. She also founded the DoJ’s Elder Justice Initiative and authored the Elder Justice Roadmap.
In her book, The Measure of Our Age: Navigating Care, Safety, Money, and Meaning Later in Life, she addresses the challenges of aging, how things go wrong, and offers powerful tools we can use to forge better and healthier lives for ourselves, our families, and our communities.
In today’s conversation, MT and I discussed how we can protect our parents and grandparents, what our culture teaches us about aging (and conversely, what aging teaches us), and why it’s a great time to get old–even though our support systems appear to be broken.

Why so many people don’t realize how many resources they need to cover long-term care, to stay in their homes, or get other support they might need. How to evaluate retirement communities and care homes. The common risks of families taking on caregiving. Why old and young people are meant to spend time together and learn from one another. Today, I’m speaking with Dr. Chris Heye, CEO and Founder of Whealthcare Solutions and Whealthcare Planning. Chris is an entrepreneur, writer, researcher, and speaker working in the unique intersection of physical, behavioral, mental, and financial health.
His specialty is longevity and cognitive decline risks in retirement, and today’s conversation is all about the conversations you need to have with your financial advisor, your estate planning attorney, and even with yourself in order to prevent elder financial abuse.
In this episode, Chris and I dig into the experiences with dementia that led him to pursue his career path, how cognitive decline directly impacts one’s ability to make sound financial decisions, and when to start making emergency plans to protect yourself, your family, and your legacy.
In this podcast interview, you’ll learn:

How psychiatrists and other specialists define cognitive decline and the associated conditions–and how this leads to impulsive behavior and overconfidence. Why we’re still so far away from a cure for Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia. How to put together a team to help take over your financial decision making if and when the time comes–and how to have the important conversations with your family members who don’t want to talk about it. Why it’s never been more important to stay active, maintain meaningful relationships, take on new challenges, and surround yourself with people you love late in life. Fri, 25 Aug 2023 - 29min - 386 - 384: Building Strength After 50 For an Active Retirement with Dave Durell
My guest today is Dave Durell. Dave is a fitness coach, blogger, and speaker and has been in the health industry for over 40 years. He has worked as a personal trainer, an NFL strength and training and conditioning coach, and a physical therapist assistant.
We came across Dave’s work at StrengthAfter50.com, where he shares strength training tips, personal training guidance, and the latest research on fitness. He believes not just in staying strong after 50 but staying strong forever–and it all works a little differently at 50 compared to when we were in our 20s and 30s.
In this conversation, Dave and I explore what it means to be fit for life and to be able to live to the fullest. We discuss the benefits of strength training (and why lifting weights isn’t just for young people), what fitness programming looks like over 50, and the benefits of tools and tech toys designed to encourage recovery.
From there, we dig into what a full-body workout for retirees and pre-retirees might look like, how to get started, and the proper diet to support your body’s needs.

Fri, 23 Jun 2023 - 23min - 373 - 371: Examining How Risk Tolerance and Aversion Factors Into Your Retirement Income Plan with Michael Finke, PhD
Today, I’m talking to Dr. Michael Finke, Professor of Wealth Management and the Frank M. Engle Distinguished Chair in Economic Security at the American College. He’s the Director of the Granum Center for Financial Security, and he’s been my professor a few times throughout my career.
I’ve always been a huge fan of his academic, unbiased approach, and you’ve undoubtedly seen Michael’s work featured here in our Weekend Reading for Retirees email series over the years. He’s published over 50 peer-reviewed articles and is widely quoted in many leading consumer publications.
In 2021, he co-authored a research paper titled, Guaranteed Income: A License to Spend with David Blanchett, a previous guest of the show, and also co-hosts the Wealth, Managed podcast with David as well. He’s been a tremendous resource to me and many others, and I’m thrilled to talk to him today.
In our conversation, Michael and I talk about how our eating and investing habits are so intertwined, how to find true happiness and your purpose in retirement, and how risk factors into your income planning, regardless of your risk tolerance.
In this podcast interview, you’ll learn:
How Michael’s first career as a food consumption researcher influenced his economic perspective–and the correlation between healthy eating and investing. Why our society gets so distracted by outliers in economics and politics. How risk aversion influences everything we do in investing and retirement. Why annuities are being used more and more for wealth accumulation instead of lifetime income–and how this is changing the perception of annuities. Why so many people can’t stand to see the numbers in their bank accounts get smaller in retirement–even if they’re overfunded.Show Notes: RetireWithPurpose.com/371

Fri, 09 Jun 2023 - 20min - 370 - 368: Healthy Aging: Keys to Longevity and Happiness in Your Third Age with Dawn Carr, PhD
My guest today is Dr. Dawn Carr. Dawn is the Associate Professor of Sociology and Director of the Claude Pepper Center in the College of Social Sciences and Public Policy at Florida State University and a former researcher at the Stanford Center of Longevity.
She is the co-author of the book, Gerontology in the Era of the Third Age: Implications and Next Steps, where she outlines the key factors that bolster older adults’ ability to remain healthy and active for as long as possible. She digs into the complex connections between health and active engagement later in life, focusing on the benefits of paid work, volunteering, and caregiving–and how staying active helps us maintain our cognitive, psychological, and functional well-being.
In our conversation, Dawn shares how losing her mother and grandmother within a month of each other changed her life, how people’s lives can truly transform for the better during the third age, and three things you can do right now to live a longer, happier life.
In this podcast interview, you’ll learn:
What Dawn learned studying the science of aging by working with very sick older adults. What the “third age” is–and why it’s so critical that we make the most of it. How to focus on inner connection, get vulnerable, and dig into what truly matters most to you in life. Why working part-time (or volunteering) has so many of the protective health benefits of full-time work without the same level of commitment. Why nations like Japan experience some of the best longevity in the world–and how we can apply those lessons to our own life.Show Notes: RetireWithPurpose.com/368

What Steve learned from retirees who didn’t have enough structure when their primary careers ended–and from guys like Mel Brooks and Norman Lear, who are happily working in their 90s and 100s. How boomers entering retirement with medical debt, climate change, and other factors are going to impact life for all of us, regardless of age. What happened when Steve told his wife that working from home during COVID was a preview of retirement–and how they resolved the conflict that came from it. What it truly means to go where life is and do what replenishes you.Show Notes: RetireWithPurpose.com/353

Fri, 24 Feb 2023 - 19min - 349 - 347: How the Retirement Quotient (RQ) Test Helps Redefine Your Retirement with Robert Laura
Today, I’m thrilled to welcome Robert Laura back to the podcast. Back in 2020, we had a great conversation about the ways COVID was impacting retirement. Now, we’re shifting gears from a “No-Regrets Retirement Plan” mindset to redefining retirement and improving our retirement intelligence.
Robert is the founder of RetirementProject.org and Naked Retirement. As the Retirement Activist, Robert is committed to changing the way people think about and prepare for every aspect of retirement. In his nationally syndicated columns at Forbes and Financial Advisor, he challenges the status quo of traditional retirement planning. His tremendous work also frequently appears in the Wall Street Journal, CNBC, Investor’s Business Daily, The Street, and many other publications.
In this episode, we dig into Robert’s Retirement Quotient (RQ) test and what he’s learned throughout his career, studying why some people succeed and some fail in retirement from an individual–not a financial–perspective.
You’ll also learn why so many people underestimate just how intense retirement can be, why retirement is all about envisioning the life you want, and removing the negative stigma that the idea of retirement means happiness is over or that you’re put out to pasture.
GET A FREE ACCESS TO ROBERT’S RQ TEST AND JOIN A GREAT DISCUSSION.
Here's all you have to do...
Step 1.) Subscribe to the podcast and leave an honest rating & review over on iTunes. Step 2.) Send an email with your username to info@howardbailey.com, and we’ll provide that to you free of charge!

How to use the RQ test to assess your retirement readiness. Why so many retirees suffer in silence despite being financially stable. Fri, 03 Feb 2023 - 23min - 345 - 343: The Evolution of Money Management with Wall Street Legend, Burton Malkiel
Today, I'm thrilled to be speaking with Burt Malkiel. You probably know him as the author of A Random Walk Down Wall Street, originally published 50 years ago and is now in its 13th edition. In the book, he made a compelling case to make index funds the core component of one's investment portfolio. Keep in mind that index funds weren’t publicly available at that time.
Having written one of the most influential books in the history of investing is an extraordinary achievement. And Burt's accomplishments are many, including several lifetime achievement awards from professional investment organizations.
Burt is the Chemical Bank Chairman's Professor of Economics at Princeton University. He has also served as a member of the Council of Economic Advisers, president of the American Finance Association, the dean of the Yale School of Management, and spent 28 years as a director at the Vanguard Group.
It was such an honor to have Burt on the show, and I'm so excited to share our conversation with you. You'll hear how he got to where he is today, from his humble beginnings as a poor kid in a Boston tenement house to his published work that transformed investing forever. He'll also share his thoughts on how today's inflation compares to the 1970s, the challenges we face to get it under control, and so much more!

Why Burt believes education is so important–even though neither he nor I ever woke up excited to go to school. Why Albert Einstein called compound interest “the eighth wonder of the world.” How A Random Walk Down Wall Street slowly but surely changed investing as we know it today. What makes financial planning for growth and planning for preservation so drastically different. How to invest in individual stocks and make bets on businesses you believe in without putting your money at risk. How Burt structured his portfolio to generate safe, reliable fixed income once he needed to start taking RMDs. How high net worth individuals often get into financial trouble. How Burt thinks our current era of inflation compares to the stagflation of the 1970s–and why he’s pessimistic about our ability to get inflation under control.Show Notes: RetireWithPurpose.com/343
