Last week we blinked and opened our eyes to a vision of a different world. A nightmare foretold is to become our future — a U.S. citizen who becomes pregnant can be stripped of their bodily autonomy and forced, by the U.S. government, to give birth. Attempt to abort the fetus, and you can be charged with murder. The idea of that reality is draconian and horrific.

But what most people don’t know is that we are already living in a reality that is much more sinister. Confide in a desperate text to your friend your fears of being pregnant, or simply Google the word “abortion” before having a miscarriage… and you can be charged with murder.

On this episode of Rumble, Michael is joined by Cynthia Conti-Cook, award-winning civil rights attorney and current Technology Fellow on the Ford Foundation’s Gender, Racial, and Ethnic Justice team. She is an expert on the expanding use of surveillance technologies and talks with Michael on the current and potential use of technology to criminalize people who seek or aid abortions.

Long before he first hosted “Late Night with David Letterman,” Michael was a fan of David Letterman's wicked humor that was often based on his total lack of respect for authority, pomposity, and those who make life miserable for the little guy. When it was announced Letterman would have a nightly show on NBC beginning on February 1, 1982, Michael made his way from Flint to New York to see if he could get a stand-by ticket to sit in the audience during Letterman's first week on the air. He succeeded. Letterman's guest that night? Filmmaker Francis Ford Coppola. Michael couldn’t believe his luck. At that time it would be another seven years before his first film, Roger & Me, would be released. 

In this episode Michael talks about what he learned about satire from David Letterman while sitting and watching him from Flint. And how Letterman impacted Michael (without knowing it) and the film and TV work he would eventually do. This episode of Rumble is a personal peek behind how Michael grew to reach his own audience thanks in part to the inspiration Dave offered him.

It's been three weeks since Putin invaded Ukraine. Three... long... weeks. Three weeks of an endless, looping news cycle. Change the channel — same story, different pundits. But behind the horrific videos of tanks blowing up cars and dead bodies in the streets, behind the escalating, heartbreaking stories of refugees fleeing in terror and American journalists being killed, Michael senses something more sinister is at play.

We, the American public, who never met a war we didn’t like, are being manipulated by other Americans who are trying to take us to war. Politicians, pundits, ex-Generals and corporate masters looking for greater profits. And no heartstring will be left unplayed until they have our ear and we the people are demanding blood.

The only thing for us to do is to fight back and make it clear — No Americans in Ukraine, no air war with Russia, no World War III.

Late Wednesday night —at least, late at night here in the states — Russia launched a full-fledged assault on Ukraine. Refugees have fled the country in droves, and Putin’s army has moved in on or around nearly every major city in a matter of 36 hours. It’s a nightmare scenario.

But there are those already beating the drum for the United States to “do more.” More? More of what? No, you don’t want us anywhere near this. The United States, which for the past half-century, has only made things worse every single place we have sent in the bomber jets or the troops who are about to die for all the wrong reasons. We can no longer claim the moral high ground (if we ever could), and after Iraq we’ve been sent to the time-out room to think about the misery we’ve caused this world.

So today on Rumble, Michael sifts through his thoughts on this crisis, and talk about why, above all else, and no matter what — the United States cannot involve itself in this war. Let the smart people find every way possible to crush Putin without firing a shot.

There's a new hit item on the menu at Starbucks stores across the country: a signed union card. The workers at multiple Buffalo, NY-area Starbucks stores formed Starbucks Workers United this August, in response to dangerous COVID working conditions, unequal pay, and inadequate benefits. In less than half a year, they've managed to already unionize two Buffalo-area stores, in Elmwood and in Genesee, at a company notoriously aggressive in their anti-union tactics.

This is huge, a game-changing pair of victories — even in a year full of strikes and COVID walkouts. To hear the story of how these incredible Starbucks Workers United organized this victory, and how you can organize your workplace, Michael talked with the Starbucks workers Jaz Brisack & Casey Moore — or, as the Orwellian Starbucks PR calls them, “partners” — two young women who helped lead the organizing effort and succeeded in slaying the giant.

A year ago tomorrow, outgoing President Donald Trump gave an hour-long speech to a large crowd of his most ardent and agitated supporters, encouraging them to march down Pennsylvania Ave. to the Capitol and demand Congress "Stop the Steal" -- the "steal" in this case being the Congressional ratification of an election he lost fair and square, and an integral part of the peaceful transition of power. What followed was a violent attempted coup of the United States, one in which an essentially all-white mob stormed the Capitol building, threatening the lives of countless workers and staffers in the building, elected representatives from every state in the union, and even the Vice President who ran alongside Trump on his losing ticket.

This grim day of white terror was brought about by months of President Trump egging his supporters on with baseless claims of a fraudulent election, all while his own party worked tirelessly to continue to erode voting rights across the country.  But unfortunately, this trend of white right-wing violence in America far predates Trump.

To try and make sense of all this a year later, Michael spoke with Rep. Dan Kildee of Michigan -- the US Congressional representative for Flint, and Michael's longtime close friend. A year ago, Rep. Kildee talked to Michael on Rumble in the immediate aftermath of the riots, after calling Michael from the Congressional floor during the insurrection -- with gunshots and rioting in the background.

Today, Michael & Rep. Kildee talk about what has changed in the past year, what hasn't, and what we can do to stop this from happening again. They also talk about how this experience has impacted both of them very personally, and unpack how right wing violence and voting rights are inseparable issues.

After the promise of major legislation that would rival the impact of FDR’s New Deal, Joe Biden’s Build Back Better agenda has been sucked dry by corporate America and their pawns in the Senate. Instead of massive new programs to help children, parents, students, the elderly and all us by dealing with the climate crisis, Joe Manchin and Kyrsten Sinema appear to have brought the $3.5 trillion bill down to some crumbs. And rather than having it all paid for by taxing the wealthy, they may be putting a halt to that plan, as well.

This is a monumental disaster that will not only hurt the American people, but will once again expose the Democratic party as weak, feckless, and still in the grasp of Wall Street, the pharmaceutical industry and the usual special interests. Turnout for the 2022 midterm elections will be suffocated and the Republican party will feast on the Democrats’ stupidity and ride back into power on it (with Trump waiting in the wings in 2024).

Steven Donziger has spent the last 800 days under house arrest with a government tracking device around his ankle.

His crime?

Well, Donziger is the lawyer who successfully sued the oil giant Chevron on behalf of the people of Ecuador for deliberately discharging 16 billion gallons of toxic waste in the Ecuadorian Amazon between 1964 and 1992. Donziger and his colleagues succeeded and won a $9.5 billion judgment on behalf of the indigenous and poor communities of Ecuador in 2011. Chevron has yet to pay a dime on this judgement and instead, have brought this case to the friendly confines of the United States and turned Donziger, the person who successfully prosecuted them, into the one doing time.

Mike is joined by Steven Donziger, live from his house arrest, to explain the Kafka-esque/Twilight Zone case in which Donziger is serving as the punching bag of corporate America, with the American people footing the bill. They discuss this bizarre and unprecedented case, his condition, and what we all must do to fight back.

India Walton shocked the political world and upset the establishment by running against and defeating a four-term incumbent Democratic Mayor of Buffalo this past June in the Democratic primary. She’s a nurse, a union organizer, a single mother, and she will become the first socialist mayor of a major American city since 1960 if she wins the general election in November.

The political establishment in Buffalo is not taking this lightly. So, while she should be coasting to a victory in November because Buffalo is overwhelmingly Democratic, she has a very difficult opponent, backed by Trump people – Byron Brown, the guy she just defeated in the primary.

With America re-considering the legacy of 9/11 and America's so-called "war on terror", Mike is reunited with Lila and Abdul to get their thoughts and hear updates on their lives.

Sean Penn is one of the greatest actors of our time. He’s won the Academy Award for Best Actor twice — for “Milk” in 2009 and for “Mystic River” in 2004. And he has received numerous awards for many other films such as “Dead Man Walking”, “Casualties of War” and "21 Grams."

He currently has a new film out that he directed snd stars in, “Flag Day.” It’s a beautiful movie, featuring his daughter Dylan Penn.

In addition to his work in film, Sean is a citizen of the world. He says what he believes and doesn’t back down. He takes risks fighting for others. Sean founded the non-profit, Community Organized Relief Effort (or CORE). He has criss-crossed this country this past year helping with Covid relief, creating up-up sites that have distributed 1.7 million vaccine shots in underserved areas.

Sean and Michael have been friends for many years and this episode of Rumble reveals their passion for creating a better world and their deep support for each other.

Chris Hedges is one of the great journalists, thinkers, war reporters and truth-tellers of our time. He won the Pulitzer Prize for reporting on global terrorism while at the New York Times, who later fired him for speaking out against the Iraq war.

He joins Michael to speak on Afghanistan, the collapse of the American empire, the upcoming 9/11 anniversary, and the end of abortion rights in Texas (and around the U.S.)

Hedges was a war correspondent for many years and has seen awful human degradation, societies in collapse, social bonds being ruptured, and people turning to “self-destructive behavior and magical thinking.” Alarmingly, he sees all of these signals of decay here in America.

Hedges has also studied the Evangelical Christian Right in America and wrote a prescient book in 2008 titled, “American Fascists: The Christian Right and the War on America.” He details the decades-long battle on women’s reproductive rights, the cynical and dishonest methods used to restrict access to abortion and how this pernicious form of fascism has only grown stronger since that book was published.

However, as a teacher, an ordained Presbyterian minister, and a graduate from Harvard’s Divinity School, Hedges draws on the teachings of great philosophers and theologians to lay out a moral imperative for solidarity and struggle and explains why we must not succumb to despair.

Within days after the U.S. losing its longest-ever war, its new President stepped in, and in less than two weeks, evacuated thousands of Americans to safety — and over 100,000 Afghan refugees. In the face of knowing that ISIS — sworn enemy of both the Taliban and the Pentagon — was planning to disrupt the peaceful evacuation in Kabul, Biden and his team organized hundreds of flights, in and out of Kabul, to Germany, Italy, Spain and four Gulf States. He ordered United, Delta and four other American airlines  to fork over 18 commercial jumbo jets to assist in the evacuation, immediately setting  up refugee housing villages at Ft. Bliss in Texas, and bases in New Jersey, Wisconsin and Virginia. And he oversaw private negotiations with the Taliban to secure as best possible the safety of every single American and Afghan refugee. The result? Not one single American or Afghan, who helped America,  has been killed by the Taliban. Not one plane shot down. And in spite of the ISIS-K suicide bombings, Biden has not flinched, not retreated, not backed down. He has forged ahead with his evacuation plan with the help of the Taliban. *The help of the Taliban!* Biden is a genius to have pulled this off.

After first being drafted in 1923 by two leaders of the women’s suffrage movement and then finally being passed by Congress in 1972, the century-long struggle to have the Equal Rights Amendment ratified and gender-equality enshrined in the U.S. Constitution is finally on the brink of succeeding. That's because in 2020, the state of Virginia became the 38th state to ratify the E.R.A. matching the two-thirds threshold needed to ratify a constitutional amendment. However, an arbitrary 7-year time limit on the 1972 legislation has provided one final hurdle that advocates for women's equality must overcome. Since Michael spoke with Rep. Jackie Speier in February, the House has passed her bill to remove the deadline to ratify the E.R.A. Now, it's in the Senate's hands. Michael is joined by the ground-breaking TV anchor and President of the E.R.A. Coalition Carol Jenkins to discuss the next steps towards achieving gender equality in the U.S. Constitution.

America's prison system is brutal, stupid and inhumane. It makes us all less safe and has a terrible impact on other parts of our society such as health care, education, and even how we treat one another. "Reform" or band-aids will not make it better - it must be uprooted, abolished and replaced. Michael Moore recently proposed a "Department of Public Safety & Compassion" to replace the existing way we do policing. In this episode, he proposes a "Department of Restorative Justice & Redemption" to replace our existing Prison Industrial Complex. The billions of dollars that currently go to police departments across America are NOT contributing to the safety, health and well-being of our citizens. As police budgets continue to increase (despite calls to defund the police), Michael Moore shares a proposal for the creation of The Department of Public Safety & Compassion in every town in America. Rather than attempting to solve human problems by sending in men with badges and guns, we need to dismantle this anachronistic armed wing of the patriarchy and have a department that will serve and truly protect the public from the real dangers in our society: hunger, the lack of clean drinking water, mental health needs, insufficient healthcare, opioid addiction, inadequate public schools, etc. What if we had Public Safety officers whose sole job was to aid the homeless, the unemployed, the addicted, the mentally ill? Don’t they deserve to be protected? From us? Won’t every neighborhood be better off if those suffering in a society fueled by greed, racism and inequity were helped rather than jailed, abused and abandoned? Wouldn’t there in fact be less “crime” if we chose to attack the real crimes and the true criminals who’ve created these appalling conditions? Instead of a militarized police state, what if we built a compassionate state staffed by those with love in their hearts and the knowledge of how to provide the actual help people need when they call 911? Defund the police? De-police the police! Every neighborhood deserves better, much better. It’s the 21st century, folks. C’mon.

It took only 10 hours of deliberations for a Minneapolis jury to find former police office Derek Chauvin guilty of second-degree murder, third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter of George Floyd. April 2nd, 1921, is the 100th birthday of Michael's mother, Veronica Moore. If you've ever wondered how Michael Moore turned out to be, well, Michael Moore, start with her as he reveals (mostly) all.

The trial of the former police officer who killed George Floyd has been taking place in Minneapolis this week. The horrific footage of the life being choked out of Floyd by Derek Chauvin has been played nonstop from several angles, and we've heard Floyd's cries for his mother over and over again. We're also hearing testimony from young witnesses who stood on the curb watching the murder taking place, not knowing what they could do to help, and in the case of teenager Darnella Frazier, carefully filming the killing so the world could soon bear witness. On Tuesday, March 23rd, when a young American man went on a shooting rampage at a supermarket in Boulder, Colorado, killing 10 people, it marked the 7th mass shooting in America in the last 7 days. Maybe life is getting back to normal in the U.S.?

March 23rd was also the 18-year anniversary of Michael Moore winning the Academy Award for "Bowling For Columbine," a film exploring America's love affair with guns, its history of racism and its culture of fear. He took the stage and denounced the Bush administration's illegal and immoral war in Iraq which had been launched days earlier.

One of the most memorable voices in "Bowling For Columbine" was Tom Mauser, father of 15 year-old Daniel Mauser, one of the 12 students killed at Columbine High School on April 20th, 1999. Mauser raised an idea that became the key question in the film: while other countries have violent histories, violent video games, violent movies, and profane music, and while some also have plenty of guns, why is it only in America that we shoot and kill each other so much?

Twenty years later, Tom Mauser joins Michael on Rumble to discuss the same exact question.

In 1987, Michael Moore exclusively interviewed Ronald Ebens, the former Chrysler autoworker who, along with his laid-off autoworker stepson, brutally beat a Chinese-American man named Vincent Chin to death with a baseball bat in Detroit 5 years earlier. A witness heard Ebens tell Chin and his Asian-American friend that they "were the reason we're all getting laid off" -- a reference to the scapegoating of the Japanese for the American auto industry cutting jobs (again, Chin was Chinese, but that made no difference to his killer). The killing of Chin and the fact that Ebens spent no time in jail and only paid a small fine set off a wave of new Asian-American civil rights activism.

In this special episode of Rumble, Michael recounts his 2 hour meeting with the defiant killer of Vincent Chin and notes the all-too-familiar "white-guy-as-victim syndrome" that Ebens exhibited due to his legal and media ordeal after he killed Chin. Michael is joined by an Asian-American public school teacher, storyteller, activist, and the cousin of the late Vincent Chin, Annie Tan, who explains the importance of Vincent Chin's legacy and discusses the proactive, positive work that is being done to confront anti-Asian racism and violence.

Finally, March 23rd, 2021 is Michael Moore's Liberation Day. After 379 days in a self-imposed quarantine and one month after receiving his second dose of the COVID-19 vaccine, he's finally leaving the house and he ponders all the places he will go.

After first being drafted in 1923 by two leaders of the women’s suffrage movement and then finally being passed by Congress in 1972, the century-long struggle to have the Equal Rights Amendment ratified and gender-equality enshrined in the U.S. Constitution is finally on the brink of succeeding. That's because in 2020, the state of Virginia became the 38th state to ratify the E.R.A. matching the two-thirds threshold needed to ratify a constitutional amendment. However, an arbitrary 7-year time limit on the 1972 legislation has provided one final hurdle that advocates for women's equality must overcome.

Rep. Jackie Speier of California has been leading the charge in Congress on the E.R.A. since she got there in 2013. The day after Joe Biden and Kamala Harris were inaugurated, Rep. Speier reintroduced this bill to remove the arbitrary time limit and put the E.R.A. on the path to ratification. She joins Michael to discuss the roadmap for what we all need to do to make equal rights for women a reality.

When President Biden moved into the White House, one of the changes to the Oval Office included removing a massive portrait of President Andrew Jackson and replacing it with a portrait of President Franklin D.
