On todays show:
THINGS YOU SHOULD DO FIRST THING IN THE MORNING TO BE HAPPIER ALL DAY:
❑ Pick a wellness habit, and link it to one of your morning rituals: It could be meditation, deep breathing, reading, or exercise. Perhaps add the deep-breathing thing to the time you spend making the bed after your shower.
❑ Get your phone out of your room: You’ve heard this before. No screen time in your room. If you reach for the phone or other device first thing, you’re letting the outside world dictate your mood for the day.
❑ Talk to yourself: Self-talk can be very conducive to helping you overcome whatever obstacles you face in the coming day. It’s even better if you use your own name out loud.
❑ Talk to someone else: Make a social contact with somebody you like. This could be a spouse or child, a friend, an extended family member, almost anyone. A call or a text will work, but meeting for coffee will give you a big boost to start your day.
❑ Incorporate gratitude: People who journal about the things they’re thankful for have been shown to score much higher happiness scores those who kept track of things that irritate them.
OLD CUSTOMS THAT ARE HARD TO IMAGINE TODAY:
☞ A kid in a car without a child seat: It wasn’t that long ago that this was legal. In France, for instance, child seats have only been mandatory since 1992. For Canada and the US, it was the 1980s.
☞ Checking your cash before going out: Before bank cards, you wouldn’t dream of leaving home without cash. Credit cards didn’t become popular until the 1970s. In the 1980s, ATMs popped up everywhere.
☞ Buying a newspaper every morning: In movies, we often see the commuter faithfully picking up the morning paper on the way to the office. Of course, the internet changed that.
☞ Throwing away plastic bottles: Recycling hasn’t always existed as we know it today. While plastic bottles are everywhere, we’re increasingly aware of the need to recycle them.
☞ Having a tooth pulled by your barber: That’s precisely who pulled out damaged teeth after dental care instruments were invented in the 16th century.
☞ Watching movies at specific times: Remember waiting for the exact time a movie would be shown on TV? And tough luck if you missed it! Thanks to streaming, the way we watch shows and movies has been transformed.
☞ Corporal punishment at school: Not only do laws now prohibit it, society sees it as barbaric. Current teaching methods favor non-violent means of discipline.
☞Smoking in restaurants: You knew this was coming. Smoking sections first appeared in in the 1990s (US). Eventually, smoking was banned in all public places, including restaurants.
GERMINATING GERMS:
While it’s true that these days, it’s hard to go anywhere without seeing hand sanitizer stations available, there are other, far more sinister sources of germs than doorknobs and handrails. In fact, scientists are warning of 7 common spots where bacteria are thriving. In fact, these areas, places you might never suspect are hotbeds for microbial life, are all germier than the average toilet seat, according to science…
1. Smartphones: When did you properly clean yours last? They are likely a key source of bacteria entering the body.
2. Kitchen sponges: One study even found that the average kitchen sponge carries more bacterial species than a lab Petri dish.
3. Water bottles: Reused water bottles can contain mold and bacteria, especially if they aren’t washed thoroughly.
4. Fountain soda water: The water lines from these things are usually teeming with bacteria, researchers say. That includes salmonella and E. coli.
5. Handbags: Consider all the bacteria-laden items that get stored inside the bags, none of which are routinely cleaned.
6. Self-checkout screens: They are touched by so many dirty fingers, they’re hot beds for bacteria. A British investigation found E. coli on nearly all the surfaces tested. In addition, fecal bacteria and microbes that can lead to urinary tract infections were found on self-service screens.
7. Pet toys: Of course. Pets handle them with their mouths, and who knows where their mouths have been? Plus, the toys come in contact with all sorts of surfaces around the home. Pet toys can be a source of coliform bacteria, yeast and mold.
Fun Facts
✓ According to a study, telling yourself “I can do better” is actually one of the best ways to make yourself do better at a given task.
✓ Contrary to what you may have heard, redheads aren’t actually going extinct.
TODAY’S SCOOP OF BS:
➠ Last Monday was the official deadline for filing your taxes [in the US].
➠ Superman was first published last week back in 1938.
➠ Fact of the Day: There are 4.8 billion people who own mobile phones, but only 4.2 billion own a toothbrush.
CLUTTER-BUSTING:
Experts say the act of cleaning and getting rid of clutter is something you a positive sense of control. It’s also a 100% preventable drain on your well-being. Consider these benefits of decluttering…
• Boosts mood – the act of decluttering relaxes your mind.
• Improves physical health – eating habits improve, combatting the association between clutter and becoming overweight.
• Escalates the ability to focus, which prepares your mind to perform tasks.
• Increases productivity – visual accomplishment is rewarding.
• Relieves anxiety – having clutter makes you fear more clutter.
• Improves sleep – an organized environment increases sleep quality.
• Improves relationships – communication is more effective.

THE WAY YOU MAKE ME FEEL:
Japanese researchers decided to investigate the ways in which musical notes can elicit specific bodily sensations and emotions. They asked 527 volunteers to map where they “felt” music while listening to 8 tunes. Participants were also asked about how the music made them feel emotionally. Here’s what the researchers found:
• Songs that were more surprising were felt in the heart, while predictable music was felt in the stomach.
• Sensations in the heart were strongly linked to musical appreciation and feelings of pleasure, which led to a decline in feelings of awkwardness and anxiety.
• Sensations in the stomach – brought on by predictable chord progressions – brought on feelings of calm, satisfaction and nostalgia.
Fun Facts
✓ Half of all bank robberies in the U.S. are done on a Friday.
✓ Red-haired men are most likely to go bald.

➠ Funeral arrangements are being made for OJ Simpson, who died last week at 76. (They were thinking of having Al Cowlings drive the hearse…but he drives too slow!)
➠ In an interview, Leonardo DiCaprio said he thinks of himself as an underdog. (Then he signed another $30 million movie contract, fell ass-backwards into a pile of supermodels, and flew away in his private jet…)
➠ Fact of the Day: Roughly 6 billion people on Earth own a phone, but only 4.5 billion have access to a working toilet. (“By working toilet”, I think they mean a NOKIA!)
➠ A study shows social media is responsible for making people ruder. (…or at least that’s what I read on Facebook this morning while tailgating some obnoxious a-hole who tried to cut me off!)
COFFEE QUESTIONS:
According to a survey of 2,000 coffee drinkers in the US…
⇒ Those who prefer cold brew and iced coffees are more likely to prefer sunny weather and binge-watch science-fiction shows.
⇒ Cold coffee lovers are also more likely to be introverted and travel more than those who prefer hot coffee. And are more likely to enjoy the music of artists like Megan Thee Stallion.
⇒ Hot coffee drinkers, then, are more likely to be extroverts. They are also more likely to prefer overcast weather, enjoy comedy shows, and to listen to artists like Taylor Swift.
⇒ Hot coffee drinkers are also more likely to be a baby boomer. In fact, 94% of people over the age of 56 prefer a hot mug of joe.
⇒ 42% of have tried to recreate their specialty coffee order at home.
⇒ Coffee drinkers would rather give up social media (22%), television (18%), alcohol (16%), and video games (4%) than coffee.
⇒ Whether it’s oat milk, almond milk, soy milk, hemp milk, or regular dairy, 1 in 4 coffee drinkers would rather go without their cup of joe altogether if their preferred whitener isn’t available.

YOUNG AND ZESTLESS:
Helicopter parenting may have reached a new level, if the results of a new poll of hiring managers is an indication. It found that 39% of employers actually try to avoid hiring recent college graduates for roles they’re qualified for. Why? Here’s one reason: A startling one in 5 (19%) hiring managers said a recent college graduate brought a parent with them to their job interview! And that’s not the only thing stopping employers from hiring Gen Z applicants:
• One in 5 said that recent college graduates are “unprepared” for interviews — and are often unprofessional.
• 53% said that recent college graduates struggle with eye contact.
• 50% said they ask for unreasonable compensation.
• 47% said they don’t dress appropriately for interviews.
• and 21% said they refuse to turn their cameras on for virtual interviews.
On the other hand, Diane M. Gayeski, a professor of strategic communications at Ithaca College, feels these behaviors aren’t entirely their fault, pointing out that due to the pandemic, “young people graduating from college had more than 2 years of disruption in their education as well as their social and professional development.”
Fun Facts
✓ Your brain literally heats up when you’re stressed. Smiling can cool it down.
✓ Blushing is caused by a rush of adrenaline. It’s also genetic, so if you’re prone to it, it’s likely one of your parents is, too.
➠ A Dunkin’ Donuts customer filed a $100,000 lawsuit, claiming a toilet explosion caused severe injuries and he was covered in feces, urine and debris. (It could have been worse. He could have been hosting the Golden Globes!)
➠ A survey found that 25% of women would give up sex for an iPad. (Part of me is like, “Who’d EVER give up sex for a computer device?” And the other half is like . . . “The new one with 5G?”)
➠ A report says the number of Americans with blue eyes has declined over 30% in the past few decades. (If you ask me, it’s because God ran out, after making Anderson Cooper’s!)
➠ A study shows that people are more likely to lie and cheat in the afternoon. (Which explains Congress’ new motto: “It’s two o’clock somewhere.”)
➠ A historian thinks he has pinpointed the first-known use of the f-word. (It was Noah – when he realized he forgot the unicorns!)
For the 7th year in a row, the Mediterranean diet — a way of eating focused on whole grains, fruits, vegetables, lean protein and healthy fat — is the best overall diet, according to US News & World Report’s annual ranking. The Mediterranean diet also ranked first in the categories of easiest diet to follow, best family-friendly diet, best diet for healthy eating and best diet for diabetes, bone and joint and heart-healthy eating. The DASH diet, which aims to lower blood pressure, came second, and the MIND diet (Mediterranean-DASH intervention for neurodegenerative delay) came third. The Raw Food Diet, Herbalife Nutrition and Dukan were selected the 3 WORST diets of the year due to their restrictive nature or reliance on processed shakes and bars, which, in addition to being expensive, are not conducive to sustainable healthy eating habits. And because I know you’re wondering, Keto was named Best Fast Weight-Loss Diet.

SHEET ABOUT DRYER SHEETS:
Do you still toss in a dryer sheet every time you do your laundry? It might be time to leave that old habit behind. Some experts say that those sheets are doing more harm than good to your clothes, your dryer and, most importantly, to the environment. Patric Richardson (‘The Laundry Guy’ on Discovery+) says dryer sheets don’t actually make your clothes any softer, although it might feel that way, due to the fact that the sheets are coated with a chemical solution that transfers to your garments when heated up. That residue builds up over time and can contribute to clothing and towels smelling ‘musty’ or ‘stale’ even after they’ve been laundered. That film also builds up in your dryer, which will can affect the appliance’s effectiveness over time, and increase your utility bill. What’s more, the sheets themselves become litter that can’t be reused and don’t decompose easily. Try wool dryer balls instead, which are a more sustainable option, that can be reused for years
Acting Younger, Feeling younger
A 2017 study found that the key to feeling younger is acting younger – and occasionally sillier. Researchers in the UK polled adults on the effects of nostalgia and youthful behavior on mental and physical health, and nearly ¾ of respondents indicated that occasionally forgetting you’re an adult and tapping into a more immature mindset — be it watching old cartoons, pulling pranks on friends, or playing classic board games — was important for their health. Also effective: the simple act of being silly – by imitating others, making goofy faces, or blowing bubbles through a straw.

DID YOU KNOW?
Workers get itchy feet around 18 months into a new job. A study of 5,000 employed adults found that’s the average point when employees come to realize exactly what their job prospects are — and whether it’s time to start thinking about finding something new. The leading causes for those itchy feet? Not being valued for their contributions, feeling like they’re underpaid, and deteriorating working conditions. And 18% said they experienced job doubt when they found themselves working too many hours. The workers reported that once they started feeling frustrated, they started looking for new work, on average, within 4 months — and it typically took just over 3 months to land a new position.

✓ In America, it is a federal crime to use your roommate or friend’s Netflix account.
ARE THE TIMES A-CHANGIN’?
A study suggests that putting our clocks ahead to daylight saving, and leaving them there, could help fight climate change. The findings, published in Environmental Research Letters, show how researchers simulated the heating and cooling demands of office buildings for 15 US cities, and analyzed the impact that daylight saving could have until the year 2050. They determined that under current climate conditions, daylight saving time reduces cooling demand by 5.9%, but increased heating demand by 4.4%. But as the environment warms, they found that daylight saving time could reduce cooling demand by up to 5.4%, while increasing heating demand by 3.2%. In both cases daylight saving results in a net decrease in energy used. They say that moving our clocks forward permanently by one hour could be a tool to help reduce carbon emissions and adapt to the climate crisis.
THE BANK OF MOM & POP:
When you find yourself with too much month left at the end of your money, do you ask mom and dad to help? Apparently, a lot of us do. In a poll, more than 3 in 10 (35%) adults admit their parents help with at least one bill. The survey of 2,000 Americans found that the top 3 expenses that parents help their grown-up kids with are rent (19%), groceries (19%) and utilities (16%). The good news for mom and dad is that 70% of those respondents plan to take on these bills themselves within the next 2 years. On the other hand, 30% admit they’ll just keep on accepting their parents’ financial aid until they’re told otherwise. Half said they struggle to limit unnecessary spending. They also face difficulty budgeting for unexpected expenses (45%) and remembering to pay bills on time (40%).
WATER COOLER QUESTION:

JOBS TO AVOID:
An AskReddit thread posed the question: What careers would you advise young people to AVOID? Here are some of the answers…
✗ Warehouse work: “Your fellow co-workers are tired and overworked. The pay is just enough to live…but you will often be tired due to long hours…no room for growth within the company, and management is concerned more with production numbers than your health and safety.”
✗ Oil industry: “That’s a rollercoaster of a career where you will be job hopping forever, moving, or looking for a job often. Whenever the oil prices tank…you may lose your job.”
✗ Film industry: “…there is no job security. Oh, you got a job on a season of a TV show? Enjoy it while it lasts because 7 months from now, you’re going to be looking for a new job again once the season ends!”
✗ Lawyer: (unless your family owns a law firm) “I have” 4+ years in business and still trying to find my right connects and industry links. My employer treats me like (crap), no paid extra hours, tons of paperwork and even small mistakes could throw away everything you have worked so hard for.”
✗ Physical therapist: “It’s a doctoral degree now, with all the costs associated with that. Jobs are always available but the pay will vary from $45k to $120k. Raises are non existent. “
✗ Cook/chef: “Unless you like (crap) pay and long hours of sweaty work on your feet under extremely high pressure and ridiculous deadlines. Also, good luck getting any respect from people older than you.”
✗ Teaching: “Having homework for the rest of your life is nightmarish, not to mention all the other (crap) wrong with it. Thank god I got out. I taught at community colleges…so in a way I had the “easy” version…Can’t imagine how anyone deals with parents and public school (crap).”
✗ I.T.: “Don’t do it. If you like computers, be a coder. You’ll make 5 times as much, and you won’t have to deal with 3 am calls because some (idiot’s) router needs to be restarted.”

WHY YOU SHOULD SMILE:
The science-backed benefits of smiling…
😊 Smile the pain away: Research shows that smiling while running can make you more efficient and make the run feel more manageable. It can also help you tolerate the pain of a needle. Smiles send cues to our brains that we’re okay.
😊 De-stress: When you smile in a tense situation, your heart rate slows down, and stress starts to melt away — even if you’re not actually feeling smiley. (Basically, fake it till you make it…)
😊 Look your best: It’s a fact — we find people more attractive when they smile. (Unless it’s one of those involuntary Botox smiles!)
😊 Make a friend: People often rely on nonverbal communication. Smiling makes you appear more trustworthy and can help deepen bonds with people faster. (Just ask any used-car salesperson!)
Two-thirds of us say we’re adopted a “seize-the-day” mentality. A poll of 2,000 American adults revealed that 65% believe they are living more in the moment these days, compared to pre-pandemic. And that’s not all the pandemic has changed — 62% say they “treat themselves” more now than they did before. People say they are indulging themselves by enjoying “me” time (25%), their favorite beverage (21%) and shopping online (21%) more often.

- 840 - Zodiac Excuse
STUPID THINGS WE DO TO LOOK COOL:
☞ Talking on speakerphone in public: Why have a private conversation that invades everyone else’s space? (Do it over text, like the rest of us…or at least turn it up so we can hear the other person better!)
☞ Taking pics of cash: Rather than looking cool, this gives the impression of trying too hard. It’s just as bad as bragging about how rich your parents are!)
☞ Boasting about not being on social media: Just like despising popular trends, there’s not much point in bragging about not being on social media. It doesn’t make you “better” than anyone else. (Same thing about eating vegan?)
☞ Insisting on having the last word: Sure, it gives you a momentarily exhilarating feeling, but it never, but it doesn’t mean you’ve satisfactorily resolved the conflict.
☞ Using abusive swear words and insults: Insults directed at a person’s gender, orientation, physical or mental ability, or skin color not only decreases your cool factor, it actually makes you appear intolerant. (But…isn’t that what Twitter was invented for?)
☞ Making fun of others’ hobbies or interests: Laughing at someone else about what they enjoy because it’s perceived as cheesy says more about the person poking fun than it does about the person showing an interest in something. (Yeah, [***co-host***]!)
☞ Using your zodiac sign as an excuse: We’ve all heard someone do it: “Sorry, I couldn’t help myself. I’m a stubborn Taurus”. Don’t use your zodiac sign as an excuse to continue bad behavior. (So, what excuse should I use?)

Super skinny people are more likely to be couch potatoes than those with a normal or high body mass index (BMI), a new study says. Researchers in China have found that it’s not more activity and less food which keeps many people fitting into a size small. The author of the study says the researchers “expected to find that these (very thin) people are really active”, but the study found “They had lower food intakes and lower activity, as well as surprisingly higher-than-expected resting metabolic rates”.

COOL IT:
As many areas experience record-breaking heat and humidity this week, it may be an understatement to say that sometimes, emotions can run as high as the thermostat. Psychologist Kirsty Leah from mental health support platform SupportRoom says that while warm weather can make us happier, sweltering heat is linked to greater irritability. Here are some tips on keeping your cool – literally and figuratively…
☞ Make your life easier: Avoid the high afternoon heat, stay hydrated, and invest in lighter sheets or a fan. Remember, getting enough sleep goes a long way in “keeping your cool”.
☞ Be patient: You might be ready to snap at others, but remember that if you are feeling it, they are, too, so try to be extra patient and lower your expectations of people until things are cooler.
☞ Postpone meetings: Whether it’s an important conversation or a routine check-in, consider holding back on work and social meetings until the heat subsides. (Unless the person you were going to meet up with has a pool and a well-stocked beer fridge!)
☞ Avoid big decisions: You might be prone to making rash calls if struggling in the heat, but it’s important not to make any big decisions until you are well-rested and can focus on the situation in hand to make an informed choice. (You tell me this NOW, after I just decided to blow off a big meeting with my boss?)

Lifelong love birds Charlie and Annie Muise celebrated with a party at their daughter’s place, then returned home to the house they bought together 75 years ago — for $2,000 — in Yarmouth County, near the southern tip of Nova Scotia. The couple were wed on July 13, 1942.

HOW MUCH SLEEP YOUR PET NEEDS, ACCORDING TO THE EXPERTS:
Sleep patterns depend on the breed and age of your pet, but here’s a rundown…
➠ Dogs: 12-14 hours per night, with older dogs and younger puppies being able to sleep for even longer. (And snore for even longer…)
➠ Cats: The average cat needs 16-20 hours of sleep per 24 hours. (And once again, mine’s above average…)
➠ Rabbits: Like humans, rabbits need around 8½ hours of sleep. But they tend to sleep with their eyes open, so sometimes they can fool you…
➠ Hamsters: Need 12-14 hours of sleep each night, which is usually broken up over short periods of time.
➠ Tortoises: They can sleep for up to 12 hours each day. Babies? Up to 22 hours.
➠ Snakes: Most spend about 16 hours sleeping. They don’t have eyelids, so sometimes they’re sleeping when you don’t even realize it. (And if the snake gets out of its cage, NO ONE is sleeping!)
➠ Parrots: They need about 12 hours of uninterrupted darkness nightly. (And let’s face it, you’ve NEVER wondered how long a parrot sleeps before right now, have you?)
(My cat, who also claims to be an expert on the subject, insists that at least 23 hours of sleep is mandatory. 24 when we change the clock!)
DID YOU KNOW?
A county in Florida is under quarantine, but not due to a COVID-19 outbreak. Why? Snails. A population of invasive giant African land snails that can produce up to 2,500 eggs a year has invaded the New Port Richey area of Pasco County. This invasive species poses a health risk to humans because they carry a parasite called rat lungworm, which can cause meningitis. Although Giant African land snails are illegal to own as pets in the US, some exotic pet owners still keep them.

✓ None of The Beatles could read music.
AWESOME LIFE HACKS THAT WORK:
➢ Waterproof your shoes: Rub an unscented candle thoroughly against a canvas shoe, and melt it with a hairdryer. The wax will disappear and act as a protective coating.
➢ Cure a sore throat: Bet you never thought of eating marshmallows. The gelatin in marshmallows coats and soothes a sore throat. (If it doesn’t work try s’more!)
➢ Remove ink stains: One word: WD-40. But be careful; it will damage delicate fabrics. (WD-40 isn’t even a word!)
➢ Staticky hair: Take a dryer sheet and stick it to the base of your brush. They can also be used in stinky shoes to remove the smell. (Just be sure to do it in that order…)
➢ Smartphone stand: In a pinch, simply flip a pair of sunglasses upside down. (And commence squinting!)
➢ Check batteries: Drop an alkaline battery from 6 inches on a flat surface, negative side down. If it bounces once (or not at all), it’s good. If it bounces more, it’s dead.
➢ Unclog a toilet: If you don’t have a plunger handy, get a large water or pop bottle and cut off the top. Plunge away!
➢ Express elevator: If you need to get to your floor quickly (and are alone in the elevator), push the close door button and hold it, then push the floor you need to go to. The elevator should ignore all other floors and go right to yours. Note: In some elevators the “door close” button doesn’t work at all and is just a placebo.

Fri, 03 Sep 2021 - 1h 04min - 813 - Spot on the Couch
- Amazon has eclipsed Walmart to become the world’s largest retail seller outside China. Propelled in part by surging demand during the pandemic, people spent more than $610 billion on Amazon over the 12 months ending in June. Walmart on Tuesday posted sales of $566 billion for the 12 months ending in July. Alibaba, the giant online Chinese retailer, is the world’s top seller. Neither Amazon nor Walmart is a dominant player in China.
- Two-thirds of Americans are obsessive about one thing in particular in their homes — their spot on the sofa. A new survey finds that 66 percent admit to having unofficial assigned seating throughout their homes. Americans are so loyal to their favorite spots, that they’ll argue with another family member about sitting in their “spot” twice a month. Whether it’s at the kitchen table, dad’s recliner, or the family couch — 68 percent of respondents say they’re very passionate about their “spot.”
Did you know your brain boots up in the morning just like a computer? As we yawn and open our eyes the brain stem sends little puffs of nitric oxide to another part of the brain, the thalamus, which then directs it elsewhere. Like a computer booting up its operating system before running more complicated programs, the nitric oxide triggers certain functions that set the stage for more complex brain operations.
… A study says these first moments of the day, sensory information floods the system — the bright sunlight coming through the curtains, the time on the screeching alarm clock — and all of it needs to be processed and organized, so the brain can understand its surroundings and begin to perform more complex tasks.
WACKY-BUT-TRUE: NEW IOWA SCHOOL SUPERINTENDENT SORRY FOR PLAGIARIZING LETTER_ A new Iowa schools superintendent is apologizing for plagiarizing parts of a welcome letter she sent to district families. Dr. Christine Trujillo, who recently started as superintendent of public schools in Gilbert, Iowa, admitted that her August 10 back-to-school letter was copied from a 2017 letter by the superintendent of a school district in New York.
WACKY-BUT-TRUE: MAN TOSSES BEER BOTTLE OUT WINDOW, LIES ABOUT IT, ADMITS IT_ Nashville police say a 33-year-old man was driving 83 in a 55 Friday evening when he suddenly crossed four lanes of traffic while merging from one interstate to another. As an officer attempted to conduct a traffic stop, the man reportedly tossed a beer bottle out the window. He denied it, then eventually admitted it. He asked for a lawyer but then continued telling the officer about his impairment and intoxication.
WACKY-BUT-TRUE: WOMAN WHO WON’T STOP FEEDING COYOTES BY HAND _ San Francisco authorities are looking a woman caught on camera feeding raw meat to coyotes — by hand. Animal Control officials turned to social media for help identifying her.
WACKY-BUT-TRUE: COP HOPS ON KID’S BIKE TO PURSUE SUSPECT_ In Germany, cops got their car got stuck on a narrow path while pursuing a moped-riding suspect. Rather than give up, one of the officers jumped on a child’s bike and successfully chased down and arrested the man.
WACKY-BUT-TRUE: FIRE DEPARTMENT RESCUES DOG FROM COUCH _ You’ve heard of firefighters helping cats stuck up a tree, but what about a dog stuck in a couch? The fire department in Essex Junction, Vermont, responded to that situation last week. According to a Facebook post, a medium-sized dog got trapped under a couch and its leg was being wedged by a metal part. The couch could not be moved without further hurting the pup, so firefighters got to work. For about 30 minutes, they used many tools to disassemble the metal parts of the couch. Finally, they were able to get the dog’s leg free. It was taken to the vet for a cut. The whole thing took about 45 minutes.

WOMEN SHARED THE CREEPY THINGS MEN DO THAT THEY SOMEHOW THINK ARE OK
• “Maybe it’s just me, but asking if I live alone. Now if there was an already established friendship, I suppose it’s okay. But if you’re a stranger or an acquaintance, that freaks me out.”
• “Saying things like, ‘If I was X years younger…'”
• “Telling me to smile. It used to make me really uncomfortable, but now I just grin manically at them.”
• “Blocking an exit while trying to start a conversation. Just don’t do it. EVER.”
• “I have a large tattoo on my shoulder, and I’ve had several men come up from behind and move both my tank top strap and bra strap to see it better.”
• “Picking me up. I’ve always been really skinny, so guys think it’s okay to just… lift me.
WHEN DID YOU REALIZE YOU WERE GETTING OLD?
Someone asked on Reddit: When did you realize you were getting old?
• The first time I saw a police officer and thought, ‘What is that kid doing in a uniform?’
• Hung out with a friend from high school and we excitedly discussed what kind of vacuum cleaner we’d like to have.
• When I worked at a university and realized I was checking out students’ moms more often than the students.
• When I pulled up my pants incorrectly and ruptured a vertebrae in my lower back leaving me nearly immobile for a week.
• When I was unable to figure out how to use Snapchat.

- Here’s a fact that should remind us to stay humble: There are probably 2 billion Earth-like planets in our galaxy. Researchers say they focused their maths on Earth-size planets within the habitable zones of their stars — that is, orbits where liquid water can exist on the surfaces of those worlds. We live in a solar system that is in one of the arms of the large spiral galaxy called the Milky Way. The sun and its planets (including Earth) lie in this quiet part of the galaxy, about half way out from the center.
- A study found that people tend to overestimate their romantic partner’s intelligence score. Research consistently shows that people tend to hold inflated opinions of themselves, rating themselves as smarter than they actually are. Some evidence suggested that people are similarly biased towards their romantic partners, but little research has explored whether people overestimate their partner’s intelligence. In the recent study, participants overestimated their own intelligence to a significant degree. This positive bias was also shown in how people rated their partner’s IQ, and the effect was even larger. Women overestimated their partner’s IQ by about 38 points and men overestimated their partner’s score by around 36 points.
- Stupid Study of the Week: People who don’t exercise on a regular basis, and then have episodes of intense exercise or even sex, are more likely to experience a heart attack or die suddenly than those who are more active.
- Scientists (University of Granada) have shown that caffeine (the equivalent of a strong coffee) ingested half an hour before aerobic exercise significantly increases the rate of fat-burning. They also found that if the exercise is performed in the afternoon, the effects of the caffeine are more marked than in the morning.
WACKY-BUT-TRUE: SMUGGLERS BUSTED WITH GOLD, CASH UNDER TOUPEES _ Two guys were busted at an airport trying to smuggle gold and money under their wigs. The suspects were leaving an airport in India (Chennai International Airport) when they were apprehended by police, who had become suspicious of their bizarre hairstyles. Cops’ suspicions were confirmed when they discovered that the duo’s wonky weaves concealed black packets of gold paste weighing .15 pounds. The men had glued pouches of both cash and gold to the tops of their heads.
… Just two days earlier, three men were arrested at the same airport for attempting to hide gold beneath their hairpieces.
WACKY-BUT-TRUE: WOODEN LIONS ARE EASY TO CAPTURE _ Wardens at a safari park in China were sent out with guns to capture what appeared to be an escaped lion, only to find out the lion was a wooden cutout and the whole thing was just a training exercise.
WACKY-BUT-TRUE: POSTAL STAFF BUGGED BY CREEPY COCKROACH FIND _ Staff at post office in South Korea called police after discovering that a package was behaving in a mysterious way — as if something inside were alive. After some detective work they managed to confirm the mysterious contents: 300 live cockroaches. The package was meant to be delivered to a man who feeds cockroaches to his pet snakes.
WACKY-BUT-TRUE: SENIOR CITIZEN SPEEDER _ Swedish police said a 70-year-old man was spotted driving 105 mph past several police cars. Police said the man, who was pulled over in a 55 mph zone, did not have a valid driver’s license as it had been revoked due to poor health. The man told authorities he was speeding because he was trying to get to a recreational vehicle dealership before closing time.
WACKY-BUT-TRUE: DOG BARK DOORBELL _ A family in the Netherlands says a city inspector was barking up the wrong tree when he handed them an $97 bill for the local dog tax. The family insists it does not have a dog — only a barking doorbell. It was the second year in a row the family had a run-in with authorities over their doorbell, which plays 15 different barking noises.
Fun Facts
✓ There are over 89 million dogs in the U.S.
✓ Every second Americans collectively eat one hundred pounds of chocolate.
- A study (University of Toronto) shows people with wide mouths are perceived by others to be better leaders than people with narrow mouths, and also perform better on real-world tests of leadership effectiveness in business and politics.
BODY PARTS MEN THINK WOMEN DON’T NOTICE
TEETH — A bright smile will win her over every time. So teeth that are stained, yellow or show visible signs of plaque are sure to send her in the other direction.
EYEBROWS — She probably doesn’t expect you to have finely shaped eyebrows like hers, but a unibrow certainly isn’t so hot either.
NAILS — The state of your hands tells her a lot about your general cleanliness and hygiene, so don’t let your grubby fingernails give you away.
SKIN — No woman can resist touching soft skin.
FEET — Foot fungus, athlete’s foot, overgrown toenails, and general foot odor are a real turnoff. And they are the first thing she’ll observe when you take off your shoes.
EAR/NOSE HAIR — She probably waxes, bleaches and does whatever it takes to get rid of her unwanted hair. Shouldn’t you do the same?
BACK — Your back has the potential to be one of your sexiest body parts… but not if it’s ridden with pimples, dead skin and too much hair.

- Feeling groggy after the Daylight Saving Time switch? Scientists say you better watch out for “microsleeps,” tiny lapses in attention that can create problems at work and accidents on the road. The microsleeps apparently account for extra car crashes and workplace injuries that follow our lost hour each March.
- The next time your spouse hides out in front of the TV instead of helping with chores, you might want to share this with him or her. Researchers (University of Missouri, Brigham Young University, Utah State University) found that married couples are happier if they share household responsibilities. The researchers surveyed 160 couples married for an average of five years with at least one child under age five. The more wives perceived that their husbands were participating in family work tasks, the better the relationships were for both spouses. Couples’ relationships also improved when wives felt that their husbands were close with their children. Couples don’t need to divide chores exactly equally in order to see benefits.
WACKY-BUT-TRUE: DIET PUSHES MAN TO DUMP GIRLFRIEND _ A man in China ended his relationship because his girlfriend’s stringent control of his eating habits and lifestyle drove him to the edge. Among other things, the girlfriend made the man chew each mouthful of food 32 times.
WACKY-BUT-TRUE: GUNSHOTS AT WEDDING _ A groom in Cambodia survived after being accidentally shot at his own wedding after he tried to intervene in an argument between a drunken police officer and a slow waitress. The waitress apparently didn’t bring the drunken officer lemon juice. The officer pulled his handgun on her to speed her up and then the groom stepped in. The groom was wounded.
WACKY-BUT-TRUE: WOMAN DIALS PHONE WITH TONGUE _ A 73-year-old woman in Russia who’d been bound with duct tape by robbers had to improvise to reach the police. The woman said three men knocked on her door and then forced their way into her home, demanding drugs and money. They shoved her onto a couch, bound her and ransacked the house, stealing money and some valuables. After the robbers left, she rolled to the living room, pulled the phone off a table with her feet, and dialed using her tongue.
WACKY-BUT-TRUE: HIGH SCHOOL SEGREGATES CAFETERIA _ A high school in China segregated students at lunchtime as a way to prevent them from developing romantic relationships. 6 THINGS THAT HAPPEN WHEN YOU DON’T DRINK ENOUGH WATER
Are you getting enough water? Here are some things that happen when you don’t drink enough.
1. You’re more likely to have health problems. Higher water intake has been linked to decreased chances of kidney stones, urinary and colon cancer, and heart attacks.
2. Your metabolism stagnates. In independent studies a person’s basal metabolic rate (the calories burned while at rest) speeds up as the body becomes more hydrated.
3. You’ll have to think harder to complete the same tasks. Scientists (Institute of Psychiatry at King’s College London) found that the brains of dehydrated teenagers had shrunk away from their skulls, and that when asked to play a problem-solving game, they performed just as well as those who drank enough, but engaged more of their brains to do so.
4. You’ll eat more. A study (Institute for Public Health and Water Research) found that those who drank two eight-ounce glasses of water before each meal consumed 75 to 90 fewer calories while eating. Over three months, water-drinkers lost an average of five pounds more than the dieters who were parched.
5. You’ll look more wrinkled. Water plumps skin, fills in fine lines and wrinkles, and enlivens a dull complexion.
6. You’ll suffer from bad moods. Researchers (Tufts University) asked members of the men’s and women’s crew teams to engage in 60 to 75 minutes of high-impact aerobic exercise without drinking enough water first. Others were properly hydrated. The dehydrated group was more likely to report feeling fatigued, confused, angry, depressed, or tense.

- A new study (City University of London) finds 90 percent of young women say they filter or edit all of their photos before posting them online. This includes evening out skin tone, whitening teeth, reshaping jaw or nose lines, and even shaving off some weight.
- Research shows the longer men stay away from their spouses, the more attractive those spouses become (Florida Atlantic University). Researchers say an ancient survival instinct in men makes them find their spouses more attractive after an absence so they will be more inclined to breed when they get home. The absence also makes men more fertile. Sort of nature’s way of making up for lost time. Women do not feel the same way.
- Ever walk into a room and forgot why you went in there? Psychologists (University of Notre Dame) once attempted to study the doorway effect, and they theorized that the brain compartmentalizes much more than we perhaps realize. Here’s the thought: Maybe the plan was to grab your earbuds in the bedroom so you can listen to (your station) while doing the dishes in the kitchen, but by the time you make it to the bedroom, that plan is long forgotten, left behind by the dirty dishes. What happened in the kitchen stays in the kitchen, in a sense.
WACKY-BUT-TRUE: DRIVER TICKETED AFTER CRASHING TO AVOID SOFA WILL GET A BREAK_ A couple who was given a traffic citation after crashing their car to avoid a sofa that fell from a truck may be getting a reprieve. After media coverage reported the incident, the Florida Highway Patrol said it will recommend the ticket be dismissed. A trooper issued the $166 citation for failure to drive in a single lane after the couple swerved around the tumbling sofa, lost control of their car and rolled over.
WACKY-BUT-TRUE: AMTRAK WORKER ACCUSED OF STEALING 77 CHAIN SAWS _ A longtime Amtrak employee in New Jersey stole several dozen chain saws and hundreds of parts from the railroad and sold them online. Jose Rodriguez sold the items for more than $50,000. In all, Rodriguez sold 77 chain saws, 103 chain saw replacement bars and 163 replacement chains to buyers.
WACKY-BUT-TRUE: WOMAN RECEIVED PACKAGE CONTAINING URINE SAMPLES FROM THE MARINE CORPS _ Andrea Fisher took to Twitter on March 1 after receiving a strange package addressed to her with a return address of “Commanding Officer 22th Marine Regiment.” Fisher was shocked when she opened the package to find four separate containers labeled “CLINICAL SPECIMENS – URINE SAMPLES” that were addressed to the Navy Drug Screening Laboratory in Great Lakes, Illinois. A spokesperson for the Marines said they have since picked up the urine samples from Fisher and that the package was not intentionally sent to the wrong recipient.
WACKY-BUT-TRUE: PIZZA THIEF CREATED FAKE ONLINE ACCOUNTS_ A New Zealand man used fake names like Jim Beam and Sam Booker to order more than $1,300 worth of pizza using illegally obtained credit card information. Gemini Rerekowhai Dixon entered a guilty plea to a charge of accessing a pizza ordering website and dishonestly getting food and drinks.
WACKY-BUT-TRUE: TOILET PAPER LAWSUIT_ A German family claiming damages for food poisoning said they spent $1,000 on extra toilet paper for their diarrhea. A judge awarded the family compensation after they ate food that made them ill but couldn’t compensate them specifically for toilet paper since it was impossible to work out how much extra toilet paper they used and what it cost.
WACKY-BUT-TRUE: COW DUNG CURE LEADS TO ARREST _ A woman was arrested in the capital of Cambodia for allegedly selling cow dung as a cure-all for any number of illnesses. According to police, the woman instructed consumers on how to apply the product. The muck would cure the various illnesses if the person mixed it with water and then either drank it or sprinkled it on his or her body.

BAD HABITS BY SIGN
All signs have their vices. Fortunately, astrology provides valuable clues for breaking bad habits. Ending these patterns will help you realize your full potential.
• Aries — They have a habit of pushing to the front of the line, both literally and figuratively. And while this quality has helped Aries get ahead, it can also compromise their relationships.
• Taurus — They love clutter. Being surrounded by all their possessions gives them a sense of security. It also creates headaches, confusion, and chaos.
• Geminis — Nail-biters. They are self-conscious about their hands, and need to keep them busy at all times.
• Cancers — This sign loves cookies, candy, and ice cream.
• Leo — It’s only natural that a sign that is blessed with creativity, charm and wit feels tempted to show off. Actually, this desire is rooted in insecurity.
• Virgos — These nit-pickers sometimes compromise their own pleasure for the sake of perfection. Deep down inside, these folks are really sensualists at heart.
• Libras — They gave birth to the term “shopaholic”. These folks have every credit card known to man.
• Scorpio — Nobody carries a grudge better than this sign. Unfortunately, hanging on to resentments has a way of crowding out love, happiness, and trust.
• Sagittarius — Archers have a bad habit of telling the truth.
• Capricorn — This sign is the original workaholic. Many Capricorns fear that poverty will set in the moment they stop toiling.
• Aquarius — Water-bearers get into the habit of creating completely self-sufficient lives. Unfortunately, this makes it difficult for them to achieve intimacy.
• Pisces — As a water sign, it’s only natural that Pisceans find comfort in liquids. When those liquids have a high alcohol content, problems can ensue.
WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW BY AGE 50
A Chicago newspaper guy named Eric Zorn says if when you’re 50 or older, you should know these things.
• It’s better to sing off key than not to sing at all.
• Promptness shows respect.
• You can’t avoid offending people from time to time. When you don’t mean it, apologize. When you do mean it, accept the consequences.
• The most valuable thing to have is a good reputation, and it’s neither hard nor expensive to acquire one: Be fair. Be honest. Be trustworthy. Be generous. Respect others.
• Cough syrup doesn’t work.
• Keeping perspective is the greatest key to happiness. From a distance, even a bumpy road looks smooth.
• Keeping an open mind is as big a challenge as you get older as keeping a consistent waistline.
• It’s never a shame when you admit you don’t know something, and often a shame when you assume that you do.
• Fear of failure is a ticket to mediocrity. If you’re not failing from time to time, you’re not pushing yourself. And if you’re not pushing yourself, you’re coasting.
• If you’re in a conversation and you’re not asking questions, then it’s not a conversation, it’s a monologue.
• In everyday life, most “talent” is simply hard work in disguise.
• Mental illness is as real as diabetes, arthritis or any other disease, and no more disgraceful. It’s the stigma that’s disgraceful.
• All the stuff you have lying around that you’ll never want, need, wear or look at again? It just makes it harder to find what you do want, need or intend to wear. File it, donate it or throw it out.
• Exercise does not take time. Exercise creates time.
• The store-brand jelly, cereal, paper goods, baking supplies and pharmacy products are good enough.

- Do you ever find yourself exasperated by your child’s stubbornness? Does your daughter continually disobey authority? Or does your son hate doing what he’s told? If so: congratulations. Recent research claims a child with a stubborn streak is more likely to over-achieve in education, and go on to earn more once in the job market. The study’s findings (published in the journal Developmental Psychology) suggested that a tendency towards rule-breaking has a positive correlation with earning a higher individual income in adult life.
- For married women who can’t figure out why they always have so much housework researchers may have the answer — it’s husbands. A study (University of Michigan) showed that having a husband creates an extra seven hours of extra housework a week for women. But a wife saves her husband from an hour of chores around the house each week. Researchers found that young single women did the least amount of housework, at about 12 hours a week. Married women in their 60 and 70s did nearly twice that amount, while women with more than three children spent 28 hours a week cleaning, cooking and washing.
- People who are born in the fall will live a few months longer than the rest of us. A study looked at more than 1 million people over the age of 55 in Austria, Denmark and Australia. They found that people born from October to December tended to outlive people born in the spring by about 3 to 6 months. The same held true for people born in Australia when the researchers factored in the seasons for the Southern Hemisphere. Scientists credit an abundance of food in the traditional fall harvest months for giving babies born then a nutritional head start.
WACKY-BUT-TRUE: SCHOOL FINED WORST STUDENTS, HANDED CASH TO BEST IN CLASS _ A private school in China upset some parents after it collected cash fines from low ranking students that were used to reward the school’s top performers.
WACKY-BUT-TRUE: BERNIE’S ON THE FRONT PORCH _ Medics in New Orleans were called to a home by someone reporting a possible cardiac arrest on a neighbor’s front porch. They rushed over but found their “patient” quietly sitting in a chair wearing some familiar-looking mittens. It wasn’t just a manikin, but a life-sized version of the “Bernie Sanders in a chair” meme that has been going around and around (and around) online since the photo was taken of the Vermont senator at President Joe Biden’s inauguration.
WACKY-BUT-TRUE: BOY WAKES FROM COMA ADDICTED TO CHEESE AND SWEARING _ A 15-year-old in the UK woke up from a week-long coma swearing like crazy and craving whole wheels of cheese. His family said the teen always liked cheese.
WACKY-BUT-TRUE: TEEN TOSSED SPEED CAMERA INTO OCEAN _ A young Norwegian driver did 18 days in jail for throwing a speed-trap camera into the ocean. The 19-year-old panicked when the camera caught him driving too fast on a coastal highway. It also caught him ripping the camera from its perch and pitching it into the ocean. The teen had been driving his parents’ car and wanted to keep his speeding discreet.
WACKY-BUT-TRUE: YOU’RE ON MUTE… YOU’RE ON MUTE! _ Wang Dong had been lecturing for nearly two hours. He had not answered his phone; he had not let the comments from students on his Zoom call, or the departure of some of the students, distract him. Finally, he invited the students in the “Living with Mathematics” course he was teaching for the National University of Singapore to ask questions. He didn’t get any questions that related to lecture, but he did get one useful piece of information: he’d been on mute for pretty much the whole lecture. He told the students he’d give the lecture again — later.

ADDICTIONS YOU DIDN’T KNOW EXISTED
Addictions are powerful chemical dependencies that don’t always make sense to outsiders, or sometimes even psychologists. What we do know is that if the brain likes what it tastes, feels or sees, anything and everything can become addictive. Here are some addictions you didn’t know existed.
• Eating Cigarette Ashes: Addiction to eating cigarette ashes is a form of pica disorder, in which a person craves foods with no nutritional value. People who eat cigarette ashes may have nutritional deficiencies or be anemic. Excessive consumption of cigarette ashes could be toxic and cause gastrointestinal issues.
• Eating Chalk: Chalk eating is a common form of pica disorder that affect both children and adults. Even though it is labeled as non-hazardous, excessive chalk eating can be harmful to your health. Chalk may be contaminated during the manufacturing process and could contain metal shavings, rodent droppings and traces of chemicals that may be dangerous to ingest.
• Eating Glass: Glass eating, also called hyalophagia, is a pathological and pica disorder that is very dangerous. People who are addicted to eating glass may sustain internal injuries and have serious gastrointestinal issues. Glass eating has been a performance technique for years, and many addicts enjoy the attention that comes with eating glass.
• Hair Pulling: Hair pulling, also called trichotillomania, is an overwhelming addiction to pulling, twisting and plucking hair from the scalp or face. People who are addicted to pulling their hair typically have bald spots and may disguise their condition by wearing wigs or hats. The cause of hair pulling is not completely clear, but researchers believe genetic and environmental factors contribute to this painful addiction.
• Eating Toilet Paper: Toilet paper is another common non-food item consumed by people with pica disorder. Even though toilet paper may seem harmless because we use it on our skin every day, it can contain trace contaminants and chemicals from the manufacturing process. Not only is it unsafe to ingest these chemicals, but toilet paper is not easily digested by the body.
• Eating Soap: Believe it or not, there are quite a few people who not only enjoy having a bar of soap in their mouths, but they like to eat it too. Eating soap is a form of pica disorder that can have some serious health consequences. The toxic chemicals in soap can cause digestive problems, metabolic changes and affect the blood stream.
• Eating Laundry Detergent: Eating laundry detergent is a form of pica disorder, in which the consumer retains no nutritional value from the product. This addiction poses a serious danger to one’s health when consumed in excess. Laundry detergent is full of toxic ingredients, such as phosphates, chlorine bleach, corrosive acids and fillers that can make you sick to your stomach and cause several other health complications.
• Thumb Sucking: Thumb sucking is an addiction shared by children and adults alike. There are many reasons why people suck their thumbs during adulthood, such as anxiety and security. Aside from public humiliation and embarrassment, adults who are addicted to sucking their thumb might experience dental problems, social isolation and shame.
• Bodybuilding: Bodybuilding is something that can start out as normal and healthy, but can become very addictive in no time. Extreme bodybuilding can lead to many unhealthy practices, such as steroid usage. The obsession with being as muscular and strong as possible puts serious strain on one’s body and heart and can lead to disordered eating, as well.
• Tattoos: For many people, tattoos are like potato chips — you can never have just one. However, there comes a point where getting tattoos can become a serious addiction. Tattoo addicts may be obsessed with the pain of the needle and the adrenaline response, as well as the attention they get from having tons of tattoos. The more tattoos a person gets the greater their chances are for having allergic reactions, skin infections and contracting blood-borne diseases.
• Piercings: Piercings, much like tattoos, can be very addictive. Whether it’s the pain of piercing the skin or the attention it draws, people can become addicted to piercings in an unhealthy way. There are some serious risks involved with excessive piercing, such as bacterial infections, allergic reactions, blood-borne diseases and damage to nerves.

- A survey of mostly middle-aged adults reveals that among people aged 45 to 54, one in nine shows signs of hearing impairment. The researchers tested hearing in more than 2,800 adults between the ages of 21 to 84. Over that large range, one in seven had lost some degree of hearing, and as expected, the rate of hearing loss increased with age. Almost all of those older than 80 — about 90 percent — had lost some hearing, but the rate had already reached one in nine among adults 45 to 54 years old, the largest age group in the population.
- Hurray for South Dakota — but put on some coffee for Hawaii. The Centers for Disease Control suggests that adults get at least seven hours of sleep to stay as healthy as possible. But according to a survey, a good portion of the US isn’t in the Zs zone — of the 440,000 or so survey participants, only about 65 percent got seven-plus hours. States that get the most sleep: South Dakota (with a 71.6% prevalence of healthy sleep duration of seven hours or more every 24 hours), Colorado (71.5%), and Minnesota (70.8%). The ten worst offenders:
• Hawaii – 42.9% get less than seven hours a night.
• Kentucky and West Virginia – 41.4%
• Tennessee – 40%
• Ohio – 39.7%
• Michigan – 39%
• Alabama and New York – 38.6%
• Georgia and Virginia – 38%

HercLéon’s entire business model is based around things you don’t need to wash as often and they’ll still smell great. HercLéon sells shirts, socks, and a hat that can be worn over and over and still smell great. All of their products, including the underwear, are made with this fabric they call HercFiber, which they claim is a bacteria-fighting fabric. • For Food: Some anthropologists think kissing might have originated with human mothers feeding their babies much the way birds do.
• As Instinct: Other researchers believe primates that kiss, like the Bonobo apes, prove the desire to kiss is instinctive. These apes actually kiss to relieve tension after disputes!
• To Find the Right Mate: Researchers have proven that women prefer men with immune system proteins that are different from their own. In theory, having a baby with someone with different immune proteins can lead to healthier offspring.
• To Achieve Euphoria: When you kiss, your brain responds by ordering your body to produce oxytocin, dopamine, serotonin and adrenaline. Along with natural endorphins, these chemicals produce the euphoria most people feel during a good kiss.

- Microwaving your broccoli might be the most convenient way to cook it, but to get benefit of this cruciferous veggie’s cancer-fighting properties, steaming it lightly is the better way to go. Researchers (University of Illinois) said broccoli eaten three to five times a week is a potent cancer-fighter, especially when steamed for two to four minutes, rather than boiling it or cooking it in a microwave oven.
- Eating too much fat and sugar as a child can alter your microbiome for life, even if you later learn to eat healthier. The study (UC Riverside) is one of the first to show a significant decrease in the total number and diversity of gut bacteria in mature mice fed an unhealthy diet as juveniles.

People in the US and Canada are staying indoors now more than ever, and yet, they’re still using Facebook less. Could we be witnessing the decline of Facebook? Last week, Facebook posted its 2020 performance update. In it, we learned that the social network has added almost 300 million more active users over the course of 2020. However, that growth entirely has come from outside of North America. Facebook added 5 million daily active users in 2020, but that’s while losing daily active users in the US and Canada throughout the year. Definitely not the sort of data you’d expect to see after a global pandemic has plagued everyone around the world, forcing everyone indoors.
- Finally a reason not to lose weight! Doctors warn that fat loss accelerates aging by deflating the cheeks, hollowing the eyes and making the jowls look heavy. The findings (Medical College of Wisconsin) are based on middle-aged people who underwent CT (computed tomography) head scans on two occasions at least a decade apart. Facial fat reduced by more than 12 percent over the period. It confirms the “volume loss” theory of facial aging, shedding fresh light on why patients seek rejuvenation. When you lose weight, jowls descend and you lose definition around the jawline. Volume loss around the eyes means they may look hollow and sunken.
- According to a study out of England, drinking coffee improves women’s brainpower in stressful situations, but makes men slower with comprehension. Researchers discovered that men who drank their high-caffeine test coffee suffered greatly impaired performances in memory tests, as well as taking an average of twenty seconds longer to complete puzzles than decaf drinkers. But women completed the puzzles an astonishing 100 seconds faster if they’d been given coffee.

WACKY-BUT-TRUE: GARBAGE MAN FIRED AFTER KICKING SNOWMAN_ If this doesn’t sum up the times we’re living in right now, I don’t know what does. According to Britain’s Mirror newspaper, a garbage man was fired after he kicked a snowman on the trash route. Apparently the stunt left a three-year-old in tears, however the garbage man says he isn’t sorry about it. He said — quote — “I don’t think I have to say I’m sorry. His family knew it was not going to be there forever. The snowman was obstructing my path. I decided to kick it because I didn’t think it was going to hurt anyone’s feelings. I don’t think that snowmen have feelings. It was going to melt and snow again, I didn’t think it would make such an impact on a three-year-old kid.” After his boss found out about the garbage man kicking the head off the snowman he lost his job. • VIDEO
WACKY-BUT-TRUE: BIDET WIELDED AS WEAPON IN FIGHT _ Some street soccer between neighborhood boys in a town in Italy went downhill when one player accused another of a dirty foul. WACKY-BUT-TRUE: MAN TRIES TO FAKE GLASS EYE _ Police in Germany pulled a man over for drunk driving. So he decided to pass himself off as someone else. Police say the driver’s details seemed to be correct when he told them who he was — until their records showed the man matching his description was registered as having a glass eye. A flashlight pointed in the man’s face disproved this when his eye responded to stimulus. Then he said he used to have a glass eye but didn’t any more. Cops didn’t buy his story and arrested him.

THINGS THINGS YOU NEED TO STOP DOING TO RETAIL WORKERS
People, we’re in the of a raging pandemic and retail workers keep showing up for work. A few of these front line workers shared on social media some of things customers can’t stop doing.
• “I had one woman take off her mask so she could lick her fingers, count her cash, and hand it to me, wet.”
• “At the place I work, we have plexiglass sheets up in the front of the registers. I despise when customers go around the plexiglass to talk, especially when they pull their mask down. It’s there for a reason.”
• “I hate when people take their mask off to cough or sneeze. They literally wear their mask correctly, pull it down, sneeze on everything, then pull the mask back up.”
• “I’ve had people who refused to touch the pinpad. They want me to put their pin in for them.”
• “For me it’s the people who are wearing a mask but it’s under their nose or resting on their chin. Just because you technically have one on doesn’t make it OK for you to walk around the store like that.”
• “Leaving their masks and gloves on the floor in the parking lot when a trash can is 10 feet away. We have to pick after you.”
“When you take a step back and they take a step forward. You take another step back and they step forward.”EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT SUPER BOWL 55
