People are not simply a collection of various parts. Each part of a person is intricately connected to many other parts so that all function together. For the sake of analysis, we can speak about human spirit, body, mind, emotions, personality and will; but in real life, all of these come as one unit in each person; they do not function separately and should not be dealt with in isolation from each other as is usually done by health professionals. If we have physical pain, we are likely to go to a medical doctor who simply treats the physical problem as if it were divorced from the rest of our being. If, then, we have an emotional or psychological difficulty, we go to a psychologist who treats that part of us. For spiritual problems we may go to a pastor or other spiritual advisor. Such approaches to treatment are usually inadequate. Even medical doctors admit that more than 80 percent of physical illnesses spring from emotional problems. “A doctor who works in a mental hospital in Tennessee put it this way, ‘Half of my patients could go home in a week if they knew they were forgiven.’ ”6 Yet medical training seldom enables a doctor to deal in any meaningful way with a person’s emotions. He or she has learned simply to function as a “body mechanic.” Likewise, though some psychologists suggest that many emotional difficulties are rooted in spiritual problems, they are seldom able to help in the spiritual area. And, sadly, psychological training programs in Christian institutions differ little from their secular counterparts and frequently teach that it is illegitimate to combine prayer counseling with professional counseling. What, then is the young Christian to do? Is he powerless? Must he resort to stoicism, and make up his mind there is naught but a life of defeat before him? Certainly not! The first thing for him to do is to learn the humiliating truth that in himself he is “without strength.” It was here that Israel failed: when Moses made known to them the Law they boastfully declared “all that the Lord has said we will do and be obedient” (Exo 24:7). Ah! how little did they realize that “in the flesh there dwelleth no good thing.” It was here, too, that Peter failed: he was self-confident and boasted that “though all men be offended because of Thee, yet will I never be offended...though I should die with Thee, yet will I not deny Thee”—how little he knew his own heart. This complacent spirit lurks within each of us. While we cherish the belief we can “do better next time” it is evident that we still have confidence in our own powers. Not until we heed the Saviour’s words “without Me ye can do nothing” do we take the first step toward victory. Only when we are weak (in ourselves) are we strong. The believer still has the carnal nature within him, and he has no strength in himself to check its evil propensities, nor to overcome its sinful solicitation. But the believer in Christ also has another nature 111 From THE LIVE RAGGED EDGE RADIO BROADCAST/SHATTER LIVE TV WEBINAR RUSS DIZDAR © infinity, and that yields something of what heaven will be like! 1. Believers will experience the joy of a newly created environment unsullied by moral evil (Rev. 21:8, 27; 22:15). The eternal environment after the resurrection and Millennium is new—“a new heaven and a new earth” (2 Peter 3:13). The new world will be redeemed from the curse upon the present earth. There will be no physical darkness; the Lamb will be the light (Rev. 21:23-25; 22:5). In glorified bodies we will enjoy a restored and improved Eden, a place of pristine beauty and unbroken fellowship—a joyful existence with no pain, death, or sorrow (21:2-4). The new heaven and earth will provide an environment conducive to the most precious values we now know—just and loving relationships, fellowship, beauty, and significant activity. 2. Believers will enjoy the new Jerusalem, called by John Gilmore “the ultimate model city.” “Those cities which have been winning their fight over crime, crumbling housing, and declining quality education become known as ‘model cities.’ One city, devoid of detractions, perpetually clean, eternally non-threatening, will be the holy city. John called it ‘the new Jerusalem.’”132 Coming down from heaven, it owes its existence to the grace of God rather than the labors of men (Rev. 21:2). “Cities are more than masses of population, they are citadels for mutual safety, conduits of commercial enterprise, and centers of artistic and scientific creativity. The representation of heaven as a city was intended to suggest ‘intensity of life, variety of occupation, and closeness of relation to each other.’”133 The joy of heaven will be a group experience. With pain, sorrow, and suffering being eliminated, heaven’s joys will be undiluted and unending. The beatitudes of Jesus will be fulfilled. The pure will see God, the poor will possess the imperishable, the persecuted will have losses restored, the deprived will have immediate access to all parts of the renovated earth.134 In the heavenly city we will experience just and loving social relationships(continued)

Zosia was a little girl . . . the daughter of a physician. During an “action” one of the Germans became aware of her beautiful diamond- like dark eyes. “I could make two rings out of them,” he said, “one for myself and one for my wife.” His colleague is holding the girl. “Let’s see whether they are really so beautiful. And better yet, let’s examine them in our hands.” Among the buddies exuberant gaiety breaks out. One of the wittiest proposes to take the eyes out. A shrill screaming and the noisy laughter of the soldier-pack. The screaming penetrates our brains, pierces our heart, the laughter hurts like the edge of a knife plunged into our body. The screaming and the laughter are growing, mingling and soaring to heaven. O God, whom will You hear first? What happens next is that the fainting child is lying on the floor. Instead of eyes two bloody wounds are staring. The mother, driven mad, is held by the women. This time they left Zosia to her mother. . . . At one of the next “actions,” little Zosia was taken away. It was, of course, necessary to annihilate the blind child.2 While philosophers argue endlessly about how precisely to define “evil” in abstract terms, none of us has difficulty recognizing this concrete nightmare as an example of it. At the very least, evil consists of the fact that for far too many people—as for Zosia and her mother, along with six million other Jews during the Holocaust—life becomes a horrifying nightmare from which they cannot awake, a nightmare as full of pain as it is devoid of meaning. Radical evil of this sort cannot be captured in abstract definitions. Indeed, “abstractions . . . distract us from that immediate reality [of evil] and reduce evil to a statistic,” as Jeffery Burton Russell suggests. In this worldview, the only “reason” why Zosia is tortured is because free beings, human and angelic, can will such atrocities. While the sovereign God can and will strive to bring some good out of the horrifying demonic event (Rom 8:28), the evil event itself exists only because free beings who are against God have willed it. The “ultimate reason” for this ghoulish torment lies there. If the words “good” and “loving” mean anything as applied to God, if Scripture’s testimony regarding the perfect character of God and the antidemonic ministry of Jesus mean anything, and if God’s power is to be construed as supremely admirable, as truly transcendent, not simply as coercive after the impoverished image of fallen human 108 From THE LIVE RAGGED EDGE RADIO BROADCAST/SHATTER LIVE TV WEBINAR RUSS DIZDAR © ideals of power, then we simply cannot suppose that it is ultimately God himself who is secretly willing Zosia’s nightmare for some supposed “higher” reason. Coping with evil. Where does all this leave us in terms of our coping with the atrocities of our world? Whatever else may be said about the classicalphilosophical blueprint model of God’s providence, it does provide the believer with a certain kind of security that the warfare worldview seems to lack—so long as one steers clear of concrete atrocities. A certain peace comes, for many at least, in resigning oneself to whatever (one believes) the hand of God might bring to one. Herein lies the appeal of the sort of traditional hymns spoken of in chapter one. If, however, we can no longer find solace in the conviction that a mysterious providential plan governs every event in world history, in what can our hearts find hope? If Zosia’s torment is truly as gratuitous and barbaric as it appears, must we not despair? It is, I think, undeniable that the warfare worldview on one level depicts a scarier world than the providential blueprint worldview, for the simple reason that ope(continued)

The grand jury found that Curley and Schultz had lied during their testimony with regard to information they had received about a report of sexual abuse involving Sandusky. It was Mike McQueary’s testimony at the grand jury that was possibly the most damning when it came to what was now being viewed as a massive cover-up at Penn State. McQueary, although not initially named in the press and merely referred to as a former graduate assistant, testified that he witnessed Sandusky assaulting a naked boy around ten years old in the shower in 2001. The grand jury called McQueary an “extremely credible witness.” Reports said that the witness testified that he had first spoken with his own father and then notified Paterno the next day. Paterno then reported the incident to Curley. In a meeting with Curley and Schultz about a week later, the witness was assured that they would investigate the incident. Paterno was not at the meeting. During the grand jury testimony, Curley called the activity in the shower between the child and Sandusky “horsing around” and also denied that McQueary said it was of a sexual nature.
