- 372 - #371 Richard Beddie: CEO, Exercise NZ
I've never spoken less in a podcast and I enjoyed every minute of it. Fortunately, everything Richard Beddie (the boss of Fitness New Zealand) had to say was worth hearing. He is possibly the most passionate and enthusiastic Fitness Professional I've ever met and that's saying something, because I know some total maniacs! We covered vast territory in this chat and I think you'll enjoy it. exercisenz.org.nz richardbeddie.co.nz
Fri, 26 Feb 2021 - 57min - 371 - #370 You, Me and OCD
Brad McEwan is an interesting fella, great communicator, deep thinker and semi-regular on TYP. Of course, he's well-known for his decades of work as a Sports Journalist, Presenter and Host on a multitude of platforms but mainly for his work on the Ten Network. This was an interesting chat about all things perspective, mindset, attitude and subjective reality but in the last fifteen minutes (or so), Brad and Melissa go deep with their own ongoing Obsessive Challenges and it's absolutely fascinating listening. Enjoy. satellitefoundation.org.au
Wed, 24 Feb 2021 - 50min - 370 - #369 Steph Tisdell
Steph Tisdell is a comedian, actor, storyteller, deep thinker and half a lawyer, who, like most of us, is working through her sh*t, navigating the complexities of life and having some laughs along the way. Enjoy. @stephtisdellcomedy @thejourney_stephtisdell
Mon, 22 Feb 2021 - 1h 03min - 369 - #368 The Science of Resilience
In this episode of TYP, Paul Taylor and I do a deep dive into his PhD research, which is all around performing under pressure, keep our sh*t together in the mess and mayhem, psychological and physiological responses to stress, the impact of anxiety on skill level, concentration and performance, how he's conducting his research and his fascinating work with the military. It's a little sciencey but I think you'll dig it. Enjoy. mindbodybrain.com.au The Mind Body Brain Project
Sun, 21 Feb 2021 - 59min - 368 - #367 The Self Help Antidote
Apart from being one of the smartest people I know, a brilliant communicator, renowned speaker, published author, expert in human behaviour and genius at simplifying (what can be) complex ideas and concepts, Bobby Cappuccio is also one of my best mates. This episode of TYP is a 'share' of a conversation we had recently on his new Podcast; The Self Help Antidote. I loved it.
Fri, 19 Feb 2021 - 1h 14min - 367 - #366 The Boxer and the Nurse
To say Ron and Sharyn Smith have had (are having) an interesting life together doesn't come close to doing their story justice. Peaks, troughs, alcohol, drugs, pain, joy, professional boxing, a thirteen year-old jockey, a young nurse, massive weight loss, reversing diabetes, trouble with the police, personal tragedies, cancer, marathons, ultramarathons, writing books, inspiring others, physical transformation, changing careers (in his 50's), personal training at 77 (Ron is booked out), recovery, healing, nutritional therapy and lots more. It sounds like mayhem (and some of it was) but ultimately, theirs' is a story of connection, love and hope. Enjoy. mtelizaboxingcentre@iinet.net.au
Wed, 17 Feb 2021 - 1h 09min - 366 - #365 The Whole TYP Crew
Melissa, Tiff and I have never done a podcast together and to say this episode wasn't what I thought it might be, is an understatement. While it didn't go where I expected, it turned out to be a raw, emotional and confronting conversation that will definitely resonate with (and be helpful for) some. As many of you know, Melissa is naturally quiet and doesn't really like talking about herself. Well, it's fair to say that, during the course of this episode buttons were pushed, tears were shed, the conversation came (momentarily) to a halt and at one stage, it looked like the episode would be scrapped. All of which has remained in the recording. There's no pretending, role-playing or sugar-coating here and while some moments are uncomfortable, they are also powerful. And authentic. The reality of life is that sometimes conversations are hard, things get emotional, issues arise and without planning or intending, we find ourselves in the middle of something messy, magical and important. Thanks Tiff for asking good questions and thanks Melissa for being brave and vulnerable. Enjoy.
Mon, 15 Feb 2021 - 1h 00min - 365 - #364 How to Find a Good PT (and other stuff)
For this episode, I momentarily stepped back in to Personal Trainer, Exercise Scientist and Fitness Educator mode, with Tiff firing a barrage of questions at me about all things training, exercise programming, physical transformation, the fitness industry, the early days of PT (the 80's), hourly rates, perceived value, how to find a good PT and lots more. As always, we veer off course multiple times. I blame Tiff. Enjoy.
Sun, 14 Feb 2021 - 1h 19min - 364 - #363 The Alternate Classroom
Joelene Lavrick was a classroom teacher who now works with primary school-aged children (in person and online in seventy-four countries!) to improve their emotional health and manage their mind. Her program (Mind Ninja) was designed to help kids build confidence and self-esteem, understand, manage and reduce anxiety, learn to be mindful, improve social interactions, understand the feelings of others and to be 'present'. Apart from the obvious messages (around helping and empowering kids), there's also an equally interesting story in this episode about a woman (who still suffers from anxiety), with no business background and limited confidence, who turned an idea in her head and a passion in her heart into, not only a valuable service, but also a thriving and growing business. Enjoy. lifelessonsglobal.com
Fri, 12 Feb 2021 - 1h 06min - 363 - #362 The Dogs that Saved Geoff
I always love connecting with Geoff Jowett but this chat was extra raw, real and revealing. Geoff shares about his depression, anxiety, obsessive-compulsive behaviour, addictive nature, self-destruction and the fact that, without his two beloved dogs (William and Harry), he might not "be around". We also discuss turning down the internal noise, redefining success, finding our bliss, effectiveness vs. busy-ness, the elusive nature of satisfaction and whether or not contentment and ambition can co-exist. Enjoy. @geoffjowett
Wed, 10 Feb 2021 - 47min - 362 - #361 Chicken Soup and Inspiration
Mark Victor Hansen is an American inspirational and motivational author and speaker, best known as the founder and co-creator of the 'Chicken Soup for the Soul' book series. Along with business partner, Jack Canfield, Mark created what Time magazine called "the publishing phenomenon of the decade". Chicken Soup for the Soul books are one of the most successful publishing franchises in the world today, with more than 500 million books sold internationally and more than 100 licensed products. Mark has appeared on Oprah, CNN and The Today Show, was featured in Time, U.S. News & World Report, USA Today, The New York Times and Entrepreneur Magazine and now he's (obviously) peaked, with an appearance on The You Project. Mark's amazing wife (Crystal Dwyer Hansen) joined him for this chat and it's fair to say that they're a formidable duo. Crystal is an international speaker, researcher, corporate consultant, author, entrepreneur and is a powerhouse in her own right. Enjoy.
Mon, 08 Feb 2021 - 45min - 361 - #360 Embracing the Suck
Lisa Tamati is an extreme ultra endurance athlete with 25 years competing in the world's toughest endurance events, running in more than 140 ultra marathons and is someone who has consistently explored the outer limits of human performance, on a physical, mental and emotional level. She is a curious mix of brilliant, crazy, terrifying, courageous and inspirational. Apart from being a world-class athlete, Lisa is also a best-selling author, speaker, biohacker, podcaster, researcher, high-performance coach, non-conformist and disruptor (all is revealed in the conversation). This episode contains one of the best stories ever told on The You Project and there is a spontaneous moment with an unplanned guest, which is complete gold. This episode goes straight into my top 10. Love her. Enjoy.
Sun, 07 Feb 2021 - 54min - 360 - #359 Pete Shepherd
I love Pete Shepherd because he's a Coach who doesn't sound 'Coachy'. He's just an interesting dude who loves going deep, loves people, is empathetic, has a gentle and humble way of sharing ideas and is one of the most 'present' guests to have a conversation with. Enjoy. humanperiscope.com
Fri, 05 Feb 2021 - 1h 03min - 359 - #358 Behind the Scenes at Craig HQ
If Melissa and I got together to combine a staff meeting and brainstorming session (for 2021) with a podcast... it would be this episode. In it, we unpack the changes (personally and professionally) we've made over the last year (and why), what's worked and what hasn't, what we've learned, how we've grown and how we might run our business (workshops, seminars, online, offline, podcast, mentoring, education, camps) moving forward. Oh, and I also explain my PhD research in some detail, which some of you will find interesting and some.. not so much. Enjoy.
Wed, 03 Feb 2021 - 1h 15min - 358 - #357 The Unintentional Conversation
Melissa and I sat down to explore a particular topic and for some weird reason, we didn't even get to it. At all. I blame her. Sometimes a particular podcast is planned but what ensues is an organic conversation about something totally different.. which just happens to be recorded. This was that. What we ended up discussing was dealing with setbacks, getting in the zone (flow state), my pre-gig routine, becoming conscious of our inner dialogue, people-pleasing, discovering our personal blueprint, the space between 'self' and body, being congruent (words, actions) and lots more. Enjoy.
Mon, 01 Feb 2021 - 1h 06min - 357 - #356 Professor Erin's Designer Vagina
Associate Professor Erin Cotter-Smith is an Epidemiologist with extensive experience teaching and researching within the multidisciplinary fields of prehospital and disaster response. She holds the positions of Convenor of the Psychosocial Special Interest Group and Deputy Chair of the Oceania Chapter, volunteers as a Research Consultant with The Code 9 Foundation, is a member of the Research Committee of the Australian and New Zealand College of Paramedicine (ANZCP) and is a Research Mentor for the ANZCP's mentor scheme. Oh.. and in regard to the title of this episode, the good Prof. opens up about her personal battle with cancer and to say that she is fascinating, brilliant, inspiring and hilarious is an understatement. Enjoy.
Sun, 31 Jan 2021 - 50min - 356 - #355 Could You Repeat That Slowly?
Dr. John Demartini is one of the world's most prolific Authors, Speakers, Educators and Mentors in areas as diverse as personal development, relationships, wealth, education, philosophy, psychology and business. I will warn you up front that this episode goes deep, covers lots of territory, gets a little science, may require some extra concentration and possibly, caffeine. Good luck.
Fri, 29 Jan 2021 - 51min - 355 - #354 Intelligence
In this episode of TYP, we discuss.. Different kinds of Intelligence. The limitation of IQ tests. Where our beliefs come from. Changing beliefs. Unconscious programming. My terrible school reports. Why we think we're stupid. Intuitive intelligence. Acquired knowledge vs. innate intelligence. Identity and belief. Our addiction to belonging. Group think (echo chambers). The challenge of being open-minded. Being okay with being wrong. How to create new beliefs. And lots more...
Wed, 27 Jan 2021 - 39min - 354 - #353 When the Motivation Fades
I've spent much of my career talking with individuals, teams and organisations about the function, value, limitation and science of motivation, when it comes to the challenges of personal transformation, competition, high performance, behaviour change and human optimisation. In this episode, I slide into Coaching mode and go deep and hard, so put on your big boy (girl) pants.
Mon, 25 Jan 2021 - 42min - 353 - #352 Forget the Plan
Sometimes no plan is the best plan. When Bobby and I talk, any semblance of a plan, particular topic, direction or predetermined theme, go out the window. This time we covered everything from learning styles, social cohesion, retaining information and building a team to unreasonable friends, metacognition and self-awareness. None of which was my plan. Enjoy. robertcappuccio.com
Sun, 24 Jan 2021 - 1h 09min - 352 - #351 The Strongest Woman I Know (literally)
Liz Craven is a freak. In a good way. Pound for pound (kilo for kilo), she's one of the strongest women in the world. You might find the fact that she has squatted 160.5 kgs (353.1lbs), deadlifted 190 kgs (418lbs) and bench-pressed 87.5 kgs (192.5lbs) in competition (more in training) impressive but here's the really freaky part; her 'walking around' weight is 55kgs, her competition weight is 52 kgs, her height is 4'11" (150cm's) and her age is 45. She's also a mum, wife, business owner, reformed party girl (went hard apparently), did zero training until her mid-thirties and.. she's still getting stronger. As someone who has worked with more strength athletes than I can remember, owned multiple gyms, lifted weights for over forty years, worked with numerous professional sporting teams and lectured Exercise Science at University level, I can honestly say that Liz's strength is truly freak-ish. Even if you have zero interest in powerlifting, this is an interesting chat with an interesting human about potential, possibilities, decision-making and the ever-present challenge of changing thinking, habits, behaviours, outcomes and in Liz's case, a life. Enjoy. houseofrepsgym.com @lizpowerlifts
Fri, 22 Jan 2021 - 48min - 351 - #350 From Year 11 Failure to Mica Flight Paramedic
Matt Shepherd's journey from being a disinterested student who hated study and failed year eleven, to Mica Flight Paramedic (the highest qualification in Ambulance Victoria), University Lecturer, TV regular (on 'Paramedics') and highly respected medical professional with multiple degrees and post-graduate qualifications, is fascinating. Matt's story exemplifies what can be achieved when passion, inspiration, hard work and the right mindset collide. Enjoy.
Thu, 21 Jan 2021 - 45min - 350 - #349 Medicine, Connection and Compassion
This was a surprise episode for me. What I thought might be a typical (but interesting) conversation with a highly qualified and skilled Emergency Physician (Dr. Stephen Parnis) about all things medicine, health and maybe Covid, turned out to be something much bigger, better and more powerful. For me anyway. Compassion, empathy, sharing bad news with patients, being with people as they die (the greatest privilege of being a doctor, according to Stephen), dealing with daily trauma, being calm and present in the middle of chaos, identity, the fine line between discipline and obsession and lots more. Enjoy.
Tue, 19 Jan 2021 - 43min - 349 - #348 You and Your Time
This started off being a very practical conversation with Tiff about all-things.. time. The way we use it, waste it, allocate it, experience it and even, bend it. Along the way, we discussed busy-ness vs. efficiency, time as a subjective experience, time as an important resource and the fact that, while time is infinite, our allocation is not. About half way through the chat, we took an unplanned left turn (as is often the way when I'm involved) down a conversational rabbit hole of psychology, philosophy and spirituality. It seemed to make sense at the time! I enjoyed it, hope you do too.
Sun, 17 Jan 2021 - 1h 14min - 348 - #347 Deadly Paths
Peter Seymour joined the New South Wales Police Force in 1980 as an eighteen-year-old and spent twenty-four years in Police; four years in uniform, twelve as a detective and eight years as a Police Prosecutor. He's seen, done and experienced things that he can never un-see, un-do, un-experience and perhaps most importantly, can never forget. Pathological liars, psychopaths, murderers, gruesome crime scenes, violence, retrieving bodies, heart-breaking conversations with families and the constant challenge of trying to be mentally and emotionally 'in control', in the middle of the most confronting, disturbing and traumatic situations. And then, the challenge of going home and be a 'regular' dad and husband. This chat was fascinating. *Deadly Paths is the name of Peter's second book. The first is called, Seven Bones: Two Wives, Two Violent Murders, a Fight for Justice.

Enjoy. stephprem.com.au studiopp.com.au

Wed, 30 Dec 2020 - 43min - 339 - #338 New Year Revolution (Part 2)
This is the second instalment in my 10-part 'New Year Revolution' series. This episode is the completion of my '21 life-shaping questions worth considering for 2021'. As with the previous ep, you might need something to take notes on (if you're keen to turn the theory into action). Enjoy.
Mon, 28 Dec 2020 - 48min - 338 - #337 New Year Revolution (Part 1)
This episode is the first instalment in my 10-part 'New Year Revolution' series. In it, I explore twenty-one life-shaping questions worth considering for 2021. You might need something to take notes on with this one (if you're keen to turn the theory into action). Enjoy.
Sat, 26 Dec 2020 - 47min - 337 - #336 Blown up by a Bomb
Sergeant Michael Lyddiard was 12 years into a planned 20-year career with the Australian Army when his world was shattered by two kilograms of insurgent explosives in Afghanistan. The bomb disposal expert was uncovering an improvised explosive device when it detonated, blowing off his lower right arm and half of his left hand, taking out his right eye, permanently damaging the vision in his left eye, inflicting severe lacerations to the rest of his head and leaving him with permanent facial scarring. This is a confronting, raw and real conversation with a man who is still on the journey of recovery, discovery and healing. It's not always uplifting, feel-good or comfortable but then, neither is life. He's an amazing man who has seen and been through some horrible shit. This chat gave me a new level of respect, awareness and understanding of what the brave souls who protect our country do. Enjoy.
Thu, 24 Dec 2020 - 45min - 336 - #335 The Healing Power of a Mum's Love
I like to think I'm kind-of tough but really, I'm not. And this becomes apparent when I talk with someone like Josh Komen who, while in training for the Commonwealth Games (as a runner), was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia. Apart from the horrendous side effects of the radiation and chemotherapy, the never-ending brutal pain, the stem cell transplants, the bone marrow transplant, the twenty-plus heart attacks (that's not a typo) and the almost life-ending infections, there was also the 'two-weeks-to-live' prognosis given by doctors. In this inspiring and emotional chat, Josh talks identity, purpose, suicide, depression, healing, hope and possibly the most therapeutic treatment of all time; a mum's love. Get the tissues ready.
Tue, 22 Dec 2020 - 1h 10min - 335 - #334 Gambling, Addiction, Murder, Fame and Healing
💬"When I was eight, I was staying in a one-bedroom apartment with my dad and he was shot dead, sleeping next to me." 💬"I lost six and a half million gambling." 💬"I had twenty-three knee operations." 💬"To get off cigarettes (having started smoking in his thirties), I tried cigars and quickly wound up smoking forty a day." 💬"I was a dickhead." I have no idea how, but David Schwarz is one of the most positive and optimistic people I know. And I know a few. To say he has had an interesting life is like saying that Michael Jordan wasn't bad at basketball. His journey has been one of pain and pleasure, suffering and survival, truth and lies, addiction and recovery, fame and f*cks ups and ultimately, one of love, hope and laughter. Enjoy. assembledmedia.com.au
Sun, 20 Dec 2020 - 32min - 334 - #333 Food: The Good, the Bad and the Crazy
Miranda Leeden is a Food Scientist and Clinical Nutritionist and just like me (and many of you), she's had her own challenges with body image, emotional eating, self-esteem, obsessive training and the propensity to over-think the crap out of everything to do with our body. And despite our collective issues, here we are having a chat about how to create an operating system (around food) that works on a mental, emotional, physical, practical and sociological level. Enjoy. @mirandamaereset
Sat, 19 Dec 2020 - 59min - 333 - #332 The World is Your Classroom
It sounds cheesy but it's true; the world really is our classroom, every moment is an opportunity to learn and every person is a potential teacher when we step into each day with awareness, curiosity and humility. In this episode of TYP, Ian O'Dwyer (OD) and I talk about the value of life lessons, biofeedback, atypical education, experiential learning, instinct and the therapeutic benefits of laughing at silly shit. feelsoma.com
Thu, 17 Dec 2020 - 51min - 332 - #331 Person, Persona, Performer
Andrew May is a younger, prettier version of me. Like me, he has spent much of his working life in the high-performance space with elite sporting teams, Olympians, businesses, creative performers and the general public. In this episode of TYP, we talk about being fully present (as opposed to 'kind-of' present), the separation of person and persona, authenticity, 'failing' at marriage, being an awesome listener, pseudo conversations and identifying our own life philosophy. Enjoy. andrewmay.com
Tue, 15 Dec 2020 - 50min - 331 - #330 Epiphanies, Life Lessons and Labouring
Russell Robertson played 228 games for the Melbourne Football Club, is one of four players in the club's history to have led the goalkicking in four or more seasons and was known for his spectacular marking. Robbo is a dad, musician, deep-thinker and hard worker who, thanks to the pandemic, in 2020 has found himself swapping the guitar and microphone for a shovel, hammer and wheelbarrow, working in construction. Robbo has a great attitude, is infectiously positive and I loved our chat. Enjoy.
Sun, 13 Dec 2020 - 48min - 330 - #329 Rushing to Nowhere in Particular
"How have you been?" ... "Busy" ... "Me too"... "Crazy huh?" ... "Yep, flat out" ... "Soooo busy". Ever been in the middle of one of those exchanges? We might just be the 'busiest', least happy, least fulfilled, most anxious generation ever. This time on TYP, our favourite deep-thinking, high-performing, calm-in-the-chaos loveable larrikin (Geoff Jowett) is back and we talk about the badge of honour that is 'busy-ness', along with the much-healthier proposition of effectiveness, interwoven with some regular stillness and a smattering of self-awareness. Enjoy. @geoffjowett
Sat, 12 Dec 2020 - 39min - 329 - #328 Science, Self and Spirituality
I can't tell you how much I loved this conversation with Ashok Gupta. 'Guru' is a Sanskrit term for a teacher, guide, expert or master and while Ashok wouldn't call himself a Guru, in my experience with him (and based on those criteria), he ticks a lot of Guru boxes. Sometimes I can't believe how fortunate I am to chat with the people I do. It's a privilege. I feel like a broken record saying this (again) but this was an amazing conversation, with an amazing human. Enjoy. guptaprogram.com themeaningoflife.tv thecoronaviruschallenge.com
Thu, 10 Dec 2020 - 57min - 328 - #327 Abuse, Vulnerability, Courage and Healing
The other day I was on young Tiff's Podcast (Roll with the Punches) and we somehow took a conversational left turn and went down a rabbit hole that neither of us planned or intended to. What eventuated was a deeply personal, raw and brave (on Tiff's part) conversation that will resonate with many.
Tue, 08 Dec 2020 - 1h 11min - 327 - #326 Dave Hughes
Dave Hughes is an Aussie icon, best known for his work on the telly, radio and comedic stage. And while I love Hughesy the performer, the bloke I got to chat with in this episode is a fascinating, deep-thinking, philosophical, metitating (twice a day), self aware human who is finding his calm in the chaos. And yes, he's still silly and funny but we already knew that. Enjoy :)
Sun, 06 Dec 2020 - 56min - 326 - #325 Lessons from Prison
TYP fave Mick Hall is back unpacking more of his fascinating journey. In this episode, we talk about 'time' as a subjective experience (on the Mick scale, 6 months in prison 'feels like' 18 months on the outside), maintaining a level of empathy and humanity in prison (while not presenting as weak or vulnerable), dealing with constant pressure and threat, solving problems in complex situations, the mental health benefits of acceptance and letting go and the challenge of being a good person in toxic environment. We also talk about the prevalence of addiction switching; moving from one addiction to another. Enjoy. dayhab.com.au
Sat, 05 Dec 2020 - 56min - 325 - #324 TRACY BARTRAM: Fame, Addiction, Recovery, Hope
Like many people, Tracy Bartram spent a significant part of her high-profile life denying, deflecting, avoiding, role paying and 'pretending' her life was great. But it wasn't. Behind the 'Tracy Show'; the funny, charismatic, high-energy performer (stand-up comedy, television, radio), was a vulnerable human in all kinds of pain and dysfunction. The first half of this chat is great (typical, back and forth banter) but the second half literally brought me to tears. Like me (and I suspect, you), Tracy is a work in progress and I believe that conversations like this one are crucial, powerful and for some of us, therapeutic and transformational. Enjoy. facebook.com/tracy.bartram startingoverdogrescue.org.au
Thu, 03 Dec 2020 - 1h 16min - 324 - #323 Post Traumatic Stress Injury
Michael Sugrue began his law enforcement career in the U.S. Air Force as a Security Forces Officer in 1998. He specialised in Law Enforcement, Global Force Protection, Anti-Terrorism, Nuclear Security, Foreign Air Field Assessments and Air Base Ground Defense. Michael served in a variety of assignments including: Flight Leader, Flight Commander, Senior Watch Officer, Chief of Command Post and Chief of Security Forces. Michael served all over the United States, Europe, the Middle East and South America. After the Air Force, Michael became a Police Officer, serving as a Patrol Officer, Driver Training Instructor, Field Training Officer, SIU Detective, Undercover CA DOJ Narcotic Task Force Agent, Public Information Officer and Patrol Sergeant. Michael was awarded a Distinguished Service Medal in 2014 for his heroic and life-saving actions during a Fatal Officer Involved Shooting in 2012. Michael ultimately medically retired in 2018. He is now a Peer Volunteer at the West Coast Post Trauma Retreat and an Ambassador for Save A Warrior. Michael is a dedicated advocate for awareness, prevention, education, training on Post Traumatic Stress Injury (PTSI) and First Responder Suicide Prevention. He speaks at law enforcement agencies all over the U.S. This is a fascinating chat. Enjoy.
Tue, 01 Dec 2020 - 51min - 323 - #322 How to Create an Effective Plan
Off the back of my last podcast (Stop Wishing and Start Planning), a few people asked if I could expand on the concept and share something of a 'how to', when it comes to the process of creating a plan. So I did. Feel free to just listen (of course) but this episode lends itself to a little note-taking because I unpack a 15-step process. I do get a little pumped and sweary (shocking, I know), so if swearing bothers you, this one is not for you. At the very least, don't listen with your kids. Unless they're thirty.
Sun, 29 Nov 2020 - 51min - 322 - #321 Stop Wishing and Start Planning
Many people think they have a plan but they don't. They have a story, an intention and some ideas about how they want things to 'turn out'. What they don't have, is a strategically designed plan (process, structure, accountability, KPIs, resources, timeline), which gets activated into behaviour, outcomes and transformation. And then, when they wind up in a 'place' (literally or metaphorically) that's not where they want to be (and they will), they say things like "well, this wasn't my plan", when in reality, they had no practical, action-focused plan. What they did have, was a no-effort wish-list. A Dream. An aspiration. Like so many, great at talking the talk but so shit at doing the work to change their life.
Sat, 28 Nov 2020 - 25min - 321 - #320 How I Eat And Train
I'm always being asked about how I train, eat and more broadly, stay in shape. I don't think it's a particularly fascinating conversation (neither will many of you) but for those of you who are interested, here it is. Enjoy.
Thu, 26 Nov 2020 - 45min - 320 - #319 Senator Jacqui Lambie
I consciously don't have too many expectations or plans going into podcasts but this free-range chat with Jacqui Lambie (Lambo, to me) was real, raw, funny, sweary (no shit) and enlightening. I loved it. Like me, she's flawed. Has good days and bad. Has had breakdowns and breakthroughs but what stood out is her passion for helping, serving and protecting the people that don't have an advocate or voice where and when it needs to be heard. She won't admit it but, under that tough exterior is someone who cares deeply. She doesn't always get it right (does anyone?) but her personal journey battling physical and mental health issues, chronic pain (still), her drive to be a champion of change and her willingness to take the piss (out of herself and me!), made for a fascinating TYP experience. Enjoy.
Tue, 24 Nov 2020 - 43min - 319 - #318 Paul Taylor
I was recently on Paul Taylor's podcast (The Mind Body Brain Project) and we had a great chat about all-things human performance, resilience, happiness, self-awareness, mindset and life (as we do). Thought you might enjoy it.
Sun, 22 Nov 2020 - 1h 29min - 318 - #317 Mark Seymour (Hunters & Collectors)
Mark Seymour is an amazing singer, songwriter, musician, story-teller, Aria winner and Aussie music legend. He's also a charming, smart, thoughtful, fascinating conversationalist and all-round grouse human. Other than that, he's a complete dud. This was a great chat and I feel privileged to do what I do. Enjoy :)
Sat, 21 Nov 2020 - 53min - 317 - #316 The Woman Who Wants to be an AFL Coach
Lisa Alexander is one of the winningest Coaches in Australian sport at an elite level, having coached the Australian Netball Team (The Diamonds) more times than any coach in history, departing her role earlier this year with a winning percentage of 81%. Before that, she coached the Melbourne Phoenix in the National Netball League for two years, winning two titles. She also has extensive experience in coaching, mentoring and high-performance outside of sport and if that's not enough, she has degrees in Human Movement and Teaching. Yep, she goes okay. So what happens when a person with all that success, skill, competence and experience in elite-sport, coaching, high-performance, leadership, communication and (let's be honest) winning, wants to explore the world of AFL Coaching? Take a listen. LinkedIn - Lisa Alexander
Thu, 19 Nov 2020 - 40min - 316 - #315 Easy to Say, Hard to Do
Think better. Choose better. Do better. Create better. It's not a complicated strategy but neither is it an easy one. And therein lies the challenge. This brief episode is an extract from a group session I did last week, when I climbed onto my cyber soap box for a twenty-minute download on everything from metacognition and self-awareness to self-control and resilience. The audio is not the usual quality but still listenable. Enjoy.
Tue, 17 Nov 2020 - 19min - 315 - #314 Making a Few Bucks and Staying Sane
I was recently on Jason Cunningham's podcast (Save My Business) and not surprisingly, we spoke about the trials and tribulations of building and running a business (of any size), making a few quid (as my dad would say) and having some fun along the way. We also discussed the ever-present challenge of managing our sanity, energy and focus in the middle of, what can be, the unpredictable, uncertain and uncomfortable nature of business. He's a good lad and this was fun. Enjoy.
Sun, 15 Nov 2020 - 45min - 314 - #313 Live, Laugh, Love, Learn
Journalist, broadcaster, business owner, entrepreneur, deep thinker, Tai Chi teacher, ex-city slicker, long-time mate of mine and now proud resident of Ballan in rural Victoria (pop. 3,000ish), Patrick Bonello is, and has been, a wearer of many hats. He's also a great story-teller, deep thinker and is annoyingly creative. I loved catching up with him, we covered lots of ground and there's at least one story that could make you cry. Enjoy. genesisfx.com.au
Sat, 14 Nov 2020 - 1h 17min - 313 - #312 Strength Training And Brain Health
Dean Mawby is back and among many fascinating things, we talk about the latest research (and the practical application of that research) focusing on the potential of strength training as not, only an anti-aging tool, but also an inhibitor of cognitive decline and brain degeneration; think Alzheimer's Disease, Dementia and even normal age-related cognitive decline. He is driven, passionate and clever and this was an enlightening chat. Enjoy. realstrengthstudio.com
Thu, 12 Nov 2020 - 52min - 312 - #311 Fitness, Health, Recovery, Performance and Function
While gym owners in Melbourne (and beyond) dust off their kettlebells, oil their bikes, deep clean their facilities and plug in their treadmills, some of us are just starting to get back on the old exercise horse (and of course, some never got off). So, as we stumble (sprint, lift, ride, box jump, moonwalk) our way out of Covid and into warmer, longer, less pandemic-y days, I thought I'd momentarily put the old PT hat back on and get young Tiff to ask me a few listener questions and we'd have some fun. And we did. Enjoy.
Tue, 10 Nov 2020 - 1h 15min - 311 - #310 The Limitation of Personal Development
I'm always amused when people try something (program, intervention, process) for five minutes and then say to me "oh, I tried that but it didn't work". Kind of like skipping one meal in six months and saying "I tried intermittent fasting but nothing happened". Or the person who reads countless self-improvement books, applies nothing (consistently) and then arrives at the conclusion that personal development doesn't work. This is a conversation about the PROCESS of personal development, rather than the PRODUCT.
Sun, 08 Nov 2020 - 36min - 310 - #309 Lies, Morality and Ethical Conundrums
Two TYP favourites are here for one special episode and we're excited. This is the first time we've had Paul Taylor and Bobby Cappuccio in the same cyber-room at the same time and not surprisingly, with two geniuses (and one non-genius), it was never going to be dull or boring. And it wasn't. Enjoy. *Apologies in advance, Bobby's Internet connection (from LA) was not awesome, so we had a few momentary drop-outs. mindbodybrain.com.au robertcappuccio.com
Sat, 07 Nov 2020 - 1h 01min - 309 - #308 Paralympian Michelle Errichiello
Michelle Errichiello was twenty-four years old, minding her own business and putting out some bins when a car careered off the road, pinned her against a wall and she experienced what is known as a 'traumatic amputation'. That is, her right leg was immediately severed above the knee. If not for the quick thinking and amazing skills of an off-duty firefighter, Michelle (with her femoral artery severed) would have died in minutes. That moment in time was the beginning of an amazing journey for a resourceful, resilient, courageous and slightly-scary woman. I loved this chat and so will you. Enjoy.
Thu, 05 Nov 2020 - 53min - 308 - #307 Razor Ray
Imagine going to work and being verbally abused and insulted by thousands of people while you do your job. And I don't mean cyber abuse, I mean actual humans screaming at you while you work. For a bloke who's been verbally smashed for decades, legendary AFL umpire Ray Chamberlain is an amazingly well-adjusted, positive, funny and thoughtful human, who shares some great stories and insights in this episode of TYP. Enjoy.
Tue, 03 Nov 2020 - 1h 04min - 307 - #306 Mind and Body: Healing and Hope
To say this episode was a pleasant surprise, would be a massive understatement. It is now one of my favourite TYP experiences. I loved the conversation, loved our guest and really enjoyed spending time with him. Going in, I had no real expectations as I didn't know much (at all) about Ashok Gupta, other than he is a renowned film maker, speaker and chronic illness and neuroplasticity expert (which anyone can find on the internet). All nice things but what came through in this conversation was such wisdom, compassion and insight, that I finished the podcast feeling energised, inspired and privileged. And a little bit sad it was over. Enjoy. guptaprogram.com themeaningoflife.tv thecoronaviruschallenge.com
Sun, 01 Nov 2020 - 1h 10min - 306 - #305 Hackers, Suckers & Cyber Crime
Bastien Treptel was just 14 years old when he started hacking into accounts and stealing money, but since turning his life around (after the Feds came knocking on his door), the former professional scammer is using is knowledge and skills for good, not evil. Helping everyday Aussies avoid becoming another cybercrime statistic. This was an enlightening and mildly terrifying conversation. Enjoy.
Sat, 31 Oct 2020 - 1h 00min - 305 - #304 Darren Hodge
Darren Hodge is a MICA Flight Paramedic, Author and Educator who has spent more than a quarter of a century serving the community, navigating complicated medical emergencies, solving problems, performing under pressure and of course, saving lives in a range of precarious situations and environments (often while risking his own). He won't call himself a hero but I will. Enjoy.
Thu, 29 Oct 2020 - 1h 05min - 304 - #303 Religion, Spirituality, Faith and Belief
This solo episode is the result of numerous requests for me to share my thoughts and experiences in and around religion and spirituality. To be honest, I don't think it's particularly exciting or riveting (great promo Harps) but I know a percentage of you will relate to it. If that's not you, love ya guts and see you next episode. It is not a teaching, coaching or mentoring session but rather, a sharing and thinking-out-loud session. It's not my intention to steer or influence anyone in any direction but it's fair to say that (for better or worse), I do have significant personal experience in the religious/spiritual space. Enjoy (or see you next time).
Wed, 28 Oct 2020 - 1h 00min - 303 - #302 Making Sh*t up as We Go
I was recently on The Daily Talk Show with Tommy and Josh and as I'm essentially lazy, I thought I'd use their show description. "Craig Harper is back and today we discuss: * Coaching and mentoring online * Switching off * The fitness industry during COVID-19 * Standing out in the fitness industry * Customer life cycles in training and coaching * Self-awareness and awareness of thought * Culture and leadership * Influence * Empathising with truths and stories * Observing thought * Cognitive overload * Trial and error * Old school culture" Thanks Boys. Enjoy everyone. thedailytalkshow.com
Tue, 27 Oct 2020 - 1h 20min - 302 - #301 Bad Bosses and Toxic Workplaces
Michelle Gibbings is bringing back the happy to workplace culture. The author of three books and a global keynote speaker, she's on a mission to help leaders, teams and organisations create successful workplaces where people thrive and progress is accelerated. Among other things, on this episode of TYP we chat about toxic workplaces, bad bosses, crappy leadership, non-existent communication and what we can do about it all. Enjoy. *Michelle's new book is called.. Bad Boss: What to do if you work for one, manage one or are one. thebadboss.com.au michellegibbings.com
Sun, 25 Oct 2020 - 52min - 301 - #300 Performing Under Pressure
299 episodes later, our first ever TYP guest is back for our 300th show. 323 games, 4 x All-Australian, 3 x Best & Fairest, St. Kilda Team of the Century and current Western Bulldogs (AFLW) Coach, Nathan Burke is back and this time we explore all things high-performance, adaptation, creating a new normal, dealing with uncertainty and performing under pressure. Enjoy. nathanburkeconsulting.com
Sat, 24 Oct 2020 - 52min - 300 - #299 Dr. Dinesh Panipala
Medical Doctor, Lawyer, Disability Advocate, Researcher, TED Speaker and Order of Australia recipient Dinesh Panipala does life from a wheelchair because half way through his medical training, a car accident left him a quadriplegic. He is a truly remarkable human with a truly remarkable story. For me, this conversation was a privilege and if there was an ounce of self-pity in me before this podcast, it's definitely gone now. If you know someone who needs some inspiration, hope and maybe perspective, please share this with them. Enjoy. youtube.com/watch?v=9GxtQo1Xj-s
Thu, 22 Oct 2020 - 1h 02min - 299 - #298 The Bloke who Catches Crooks and Pulls Trains
Grant Edwards is a recently-retired Australian Federal Police Commander, with over 34 years of service protecting vulnerable people around the world. He is a former elite athlete and strongman competitor, participating in the World's Strongest Man competition and he's an all-round big unit. Big interesting, inspirational, passionate and compassionate unit. Grant is a sought-after public speaker, author and passionate mental health advocate helping reshape the police force's approach to mental health. He's on a mission to remove the stigma around mental health, not just in policing but society-wide. This was a great chat with an inspirational, authentic, courageous and super-interesting bloke. I loved it. And I may have a man crush. Enjoy.
Tue, 20 Oct 2020 - 1h 10min - 298 - #297 My Forty-Year Apprenticeship
I feel like my entire working (learning) life has been an ongoing training process. An apprenticeship, of sorts. And while I know (intellectually) that I have some competencies, skills and attributes which enable me to get certain things done, the 'feeling' of inadequacy, self-doubt and mediocrity is never far away. And as weird and 'un-inspirational' as this might sound coming from me, I kind of like it. I like it because my 'non-special-ness' keeps me grounded, practical, realistic and doing work. I think if was uber-gifted or smart, I might be lazy. I might not do the work. Having to work hard when some don't, is not always the handicap it might seem to be. Sometimes it's a gift. The gift that builds strength, awareness and resilience. For me, it was the thing that made me who I am. This brief episode is about my failures, flaws, fuck-ups and growth. I hope you find some encouragement in it. Enjoy.
Mon, 19 Oct 2020 - 297 - #296 Being a Contrarian
The wise-beyond-his-years Pete Shepherd is back at TYP Central and without doubt, this is my favourite conversation with him. We got lost in a number of fascinating topics and I totally love his conversational cadence, calmness and ability to be fully present and connected. And say clever shit. humanperiscope.com
Sun, 18 Oct 2020 - 296 - #295 Dr. Jodi Richardson
Dr. Jodi Richardson is back at TYP Central and we continue our conversation around managing our mind, emotions, body and of course, life. Jodi is both inspiring and fascinating because, while being a respected educator, author and expert in the field of mental health and wellbeing, she is also courageously managing her own chronic anxiety disorder and speaking about it publicly. Love her. Enjoy. drjodirichardson.com.au
Sat, 17 Oct 2020 - 295 - #294 Flow (what, why, how)
The You Project favourite Braniac Bobby Cappuccio is back and this time we go deep exploring the science, process, practice and value of... flow. That beautiful space where time bends, magic happens, productivity accelerates, effort decreases as performance increases and we become part of something bigger than us. We dive into Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi's work and ideas (from his book 'Flow') and along the way, the Braniac manages to slip into Neuroscience Lecturer mode. Enjoy.
Thu, 15 Oct 2020 - 294 - #293 Post-Dream Anxiety (and other stuff)
What about when you wake up from a stressful, anxiety-producing dream, only to realise that you were just... dreaming? It's not real. Well, the anxiety is real but the threat is not. And while your mind understands the reality of the situation (I am safe, there is no danger, it was my imagination), the anxiety, discomfort and 'fear' in your body (elevated respiration, heart rate, stress hormones, blood pressure, nervous system) remains. Despite your knowledge (there is no imminent threat), the stressful physical experience continues. Often for hours, sometimes for days. This is a very brief (but interesting) chat about how that works.
Wed, 14 Oct 2020 - 293 - #292 Chronic Fatigue and other Debilitating Conditions
I first met Toby Morrison when he was a teenager suffering from Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. The once-elite junior athlete spent four years battling exhaustion, debilitating pain, confusion, frustration, mis-diagnoses, judgment (of others) and the multitude of physical, mental, emotional, social and practical challenges that come with such a condition. A few years later, Toby worked in one of my gyms specialising in CFS recovery and these days, he and his team work with thousands of CFS sufferers around the world. His insight into the condition is significant and fascinating and for some people, this chat will be invaluable. I learned a lot and enjoyed our catch up. cfshealth.com
Tue, 13 Oct 2020 - 292 - #291 Don't Wait for Your Hill to Change
This brief podcast is one of the thirty sections from my online audio program and it's certainly a message and metaphor which generally resonates with people. I'm a little under the pump today in terms of available time, so I've decided to share this (new to the podcast) audio with you. Enjoy.
Sun, 11 Oct 2020 - 291 - #290 The Lady Who Lost 138 kgs
When we recorded this chat (Saturday Oct. 10, 2020), Anna Kambranis weighed 68 kgs. On January 3, 2018, Anna weighed in at 206.5 kgs for her first workout. For my overseas (non-metric) friends, that 138.5 kg weight-loss represents 305 lbs. And no, that's not a typo. Along with her Trainer (and now friend) Kyle Johnston, Anna has had an interesting journey since setting foot (reluctantly) in the gym almost three years ago. This is a conversation about that journey. Enjoy.
Sat, 10 Oct 2020 - 290 - #289 Creating New Habits
Since I was the eighteen year-old gym instructor working all day, every day with humans who wanted to look, feel, function and perform differently, I've been having conversation about choices, behaviours, mindset, motivation, self-control and of course, the ever-present challenge of creating new healthier habits.
Fri, 09 Oct 2020 - 289 - #288 PALEO: A Guide to Getting Started
The Paleo Warrior is back and she's not pulling any punches, sparing any feelings or giving too many f**ks about ruffling feathers or feelings. And by 'too many', I mean zero. Which is why we love her. In this episode of TYP, the very bossy, somewhat anti-social, anti-establishment Dietician Vicky Kuriel dropped by to provide a basic 'how-to-get-started' guide for (a) people considering dipping their toe in the Paleo Pool for a short-term (4-6 week) test drive or (b) those seeking to switch to Paleo over the long term. This episode is not for everyone (obviously) but even from an education and information perspective, I found it fascinating. Enjoy. eatplaythrive.com.au lowcarbchallenge.com.au
Thu, 08 Oct 2020 - 288 - #287 YOU: Public, Personal, Private, Secret and Fantasy
In this brief episode, I talk about the five versions of you (and me) and the way we choose to reveal (or not) those 'people' to the world, depending on situation, circumstance, audience, environment, mindset, confidence, fear and motive. Enjoy.
Tue, 06 Oct 2020 - 287 - #286 Menopause, Mano-pause and Middle-Age (part 2)
Exercise Physiologist Unna Goldsworthy (B.Ex.Sci, M.App.Sci) is back and this time we go deep with listener questions to continue our chat on all things hormones, emotions, exercise, nutrition, hot flushes, body composition, lifestyle, energy levels and the unavoidable reality of navigating the midlife sh*tfest! @goldyguts
Sun, 04 Oct 2020 - 286 - #285 Catastrophes, Courage, Comebacks and Championships
Jacqui Cooper is a five-time Olympian in freestyle skiing (aerials), world champion, five-time world cup champion, mum of three, corporate speaker, entrepreneur, author, all-round inspiration and funny AF. I had the pleasure of being Jacqui's first strength and conditioning coach and without doubt, when it came to competition, she was equal parts talent, skill, courage and crazy. Jacqui is ace and this was a truly fun conversation. You will love her.
Sat, 03 Oct 2020 - 285 - #284 2,633,256,000 Seconds
2,633,256,000 Seconds. If you're a statistically 'typical' Australian woman, that's about how many seconds your heart will beat for. Us typical dudes on the other hand, we get a miserly 2,538, 648,000. If I'm statistically average, I have 23.5 years to live and annoyingly, Melissa has 51.5 years. Almost a year ago (October 11, 2019), my training partner died while we were lifting heavy shit. For seventeen minutes (5.05 - 5.22pm). Yesterday we went for a bike ride. Weird. Death is an inevitability and unlike Mark (my training partner, AKA the Crab), most of us will only die once. And while death (the actual cessation of heart beat and respiration) happens in a second or so, life is lived over billions of them. This is a chat about that. Enjoy.
Thu, 01 Oct 2020 - 284 - #283 Common Exercise Mistakes, Misconceptions and Fallacies
Exercise Scientist, Gym Owner and Conditioning Coach Russ Jarrett (M.Ex.Sci) is back at TYP HQ and to be honest, this episode doesn't require an overview because it's all in the title. Enjoy. russelljarrett.com.au
Tue, 29 Sep 2020 - 283 - #282 Self-Awareness and Self-Regulation
Successfully navigating life and its many components (physical, mental, emotional, personal, professional, practical, spiritual) is the ever-present human challenge but without doubt, two of the most important components are self-awareness and self-regulation. That is (1) our ability to recognise and understand our own drivers, strengths, weaknesses, biases, beliefs, stories, fears, values and (let's be honest) bullsh*t and (2) our ability to manage our choices, actions and reactions in a manner which best serves us and those we care about. This solo episode is essentially a mini workshop, so feel free to hit the pause button, take notes and answer some of the questions I pose or just let it roll. Either or neither. Enjoy.
Sun, 27 Sep 2020 - 282 - #281 Agoraphobia, Anxiety, Addiction, Overwhelm and Art.
*Before I give my normal show synopsis, I want to tell you that this is one of my all-time favourite TYP chats (top 3 out of 281). To say that Dylan (Keys) was nervous, uncomfortable, anxious and hesitant before we recorded this is a massive understatement. Dylan is a follower of my work and one day I peeked at his page and saw his breath-taking talent. I told him he was a star, he replied and since that time we've interacted with regular messages and calls. The quiet, humble, unassuming gifted artist (who drew the charcoal gorilla), lives in rural New Zealand, has seen very few people in six years, deals with ongoing mental-health challenges, is a recovering addict, suffers from chronic-fatigue syndrome and seems to have no idea of his own potential. So, this is not a 'typical' podcast with a typical guest and while it took some encouragement (some might say.. coercion), to get Dylan through the TYP door, I wanted you to 'meet' him because I think his story might be a source of interest, encouragement and/or inspiration to many of you. Enjoy. @dylankeysart
Sat, 26 Sep 2020 - 281 - #280 The Fruit Salad Episode
It's fair to say that Paul and I covered a lot of territory in this episode, hence the title. We explored everything from implantable brain tech that gives us direct access to the internet (not terrifying at all), Elon Musk's plans for the integration of biology (you and me) with technology (computers, AI) to produce superior humans (more terrifying), sex robots (good grief), vegan meat, the way games hijack kid's brains and the potential dangers of technology more broadly, through to raising free-range kids, Paul's teenage waterboarding experience (for real), corporal punishment in the schools (well, my school) helicopter parenting and a thing called post-traumatic growth. Paul is always fascinating and this episode was no exception. Enjoy. mindbodybrain.com.au
Thu, 24 Sep 2020 - 280 - #279 People Stuff (a New Book)
Zoe Routh knows about people. And stuff. Which is why her new book is called... People Stuff. In this episode of The You Project, Craig and Zoe chat about the social, emotional and psychological Pandora's Box that is, people and their stuff. Specifically, they explore constructive feedback, the 3 traps of power, subterfuge, undermining and backstabbing, how to design a workplace to avoid the four devils, toxic behaviour and the four devils of people stuff. Enjoy. zoerouth.com
Tue, 22 Sep 2020 - 279 - #278 How I Organise my Ideas and Downloads
For years, I've been keeping an electronic journal where I jot down thoughts, realisations, ideas, anecdotes, questions and topics. It lives in the form of a Word Doc. consisting of hundreds of thousands of words; around the equivalent of three or four 250-300 page books. Over the years I've learned that thinking happens despite me and while a lot of it is complete shit, some of it is worth paying attention to and more importantly, taking action on. Ergo, the journal. Sometimes it's the beginning of something that I intend to expand on later, sometimes it's a complete idea and/or message in and of itself and sometimes, it's a piece of a cognitive puzzle that I'm yet to figure out. Often it's a paragraph or two, occasionally a single sentence, sometimes a dot-point list and with increasing regularity, it's a page of rambling ideas that seem to come through me, not from me. Sometimes it's a very intentional, logical, conscious download and sometimes, it's more of an overwhelm of creativity, inspiration and insight that seems to come from somewhere outside my acquired knowledge, experience and/or education. I try not to over-think it or 'get in the way' but rather, just type.
Sun, 20 Sep 2020 - 278 - #277 Busy Head Syndrome
TYP favourite Geoff Jowett is back and as always, the boys have fun going deep talking about stillness, turning down the internal noise, living the simple life and redefining success. Enjoy. @geoffjowett
Sat, 19 Sep 2020 - 277 - #276 Coaching Humans
Lisa Alexander is one of the winningest coaches in Australian Sport and after nine years at the helm of our national netball team (the Diamonds 2011-2020), Lisa walked away with a winning record of eighty-one percent. In this episode of TYP, we talk about the evolution of coaching (in all areas.. sport, business, health, life), what it takes to get the best out of people and why being a successful coach in any domain is largely about awareness, empathy, emotional intelligence, psychology and communication. Enjoy.
Thu, 17 Sep 2020 - 276 - #275 Lies, Taboo and Bullsh*t
Marketing genius, thought leader, story teller and straight-shooter Simon Hammond is back to chat with us about the key themes and messages in his new book.. Brutal Truth: Surviving in a world of Lies, Taboos and Bullsh*t. At first glance (listen), some of his ideas might seem somewhat controversial (brutal, even) but be patient because when he eloquently explains why inequality is not the same as discrimination (among many other interesting ideas), it becomes apparent that, while he sounds like a hard-arse, he's actually someone who cares about deeply about people on a micro (individual) and macro (societal) level. This was a good chat. 50Crates.com.au
Tue, 15 Sep 2020 - 275 - #274 Menopause, Man-opause and Middle-Age
Exercise Physiologist, Educator and all-round Grouse Chick, Unna Goldsworthy is back and this time, hormones, emotions, exercise, hot flushes, body composition, lifestyle, grieving through Menopause and something called 'Meno-spread' (good grief!) are on the conversational menu. Enjoy. @goldyguts
Sun, 13 Sep 2020 - 274 - #273 Managing in the Mayhem (a workshop)
A few weeks ago, I decided to run a free workshop for people who were hurting and struggling and for those needing a little inspiration, encouragement and support. The first one booked out in two hours (1,000 people), so we ended up running three workshops over three weeks. This episode of TYP is the audio from our second session and it runs for nearly an hour and a half. We cover lots of territory, ranging from the cognitive, emotional, physical and practical, through to the philosophical, existential and spiritual. If you've heard me speak often, feel free to give it a miss, although revision, reminders and reinforcement never hurt. Love ya guts.
Sat, 12 Sep 2020 - 273 - #272 Laughter, Bare Feet and Slumpy Posture
This was one of the funniest chats I've had on TYP with a great Mate, who also happens to be one of the most down-to-earth, intuitively intelligent and gifted practitioners I know. He's also highly inappropriate, swears like me and seems to have no apparent filter. Perfect. OD (Ian O'Dwyer) is back and this time we explore the mental, emotional and physical health benefits of fun, laughter and play, we discuss the way emotion 'lives' in our body and we also talk about slumpy posture (kyphosis), biofeedback, having hard (but necessary) conversations, life in lockdown, self-experimentation, finding our optimal operating system and self-awareness. So not much at all, really. Enjoy. feelsoma.com
Thu, 10 Sep 2020 - 272 - #271 Lessons from Failure
Among other things, this is an episode about my numerous failures and f*ck-ups and how those things became lessons, opportunities, growth experiences, resilience builders and motivation to do better. It's also a broader conversation about the 'psychology of failure'. That is, the way we think about it, talk about it, process it, understand it and sometimes, turn simple 'outcomes' into catastrophic failures.
Tue, 08 Sep 2020 - 271 - #270 Dealing with the Uns (part 2)
Through no fault, choice or desire of our own, most of us are currently dealing with all things 'UN'... uncertain, unpredictable, unfamiliar, unwanted, unknown, uncomfortable, unhappy. Which is both interesting and challenging because we humans like the opposite of all those things. We like predictable, known, familiar, comfortable and happy, which is why right now, a significant increase in anxiety, depression, sadness, fear and a myriad of related mental health issues are telling us that, for many people, Covid is as much (if not more) a psychological, emotional, sociological and economic threat as it is, a biological one. TYP Fave Anna Feringa is back with Craig to go deep on the Uns. annaferinga.com.au
Sun, 06 Sep 2020 - 270 - #269 Dealing with the Uns (part 1)

Sat, 05 Sep 2020 - 269 - #268 Body Transformation Programs
In this episode of TYP, I discuss the Pros and Cons (yes, there are both) of body transformation programs. And while it might seem like a singular focus on a singular topic, it's actually a much bigger (and broadly relevant) conversation about everything from consistency, mindset, temporary behaviours, expectations, self-sabotage, why people fail and post-program bingeing to subconscious programming, organisation, goal-setting, accountability and (of course), creating lasting transformation.
Thu, 03 Sep 2020 - 268 - #267 Bodyweight, Body-fat and Body Composition
Depending on the assessment tool, my body can be classified anywhere on the continuum from borderline obese (height-weight chart, BMI) to very lean (body composition analysis). No wonder people get frustrated and confused. *Note: Apologies for the audio quality in this episode. Few challenges in lockdown recording conversations over the ol' interwebs.
Tue, 01 Sep 2020 - 267 - #266 The Slippery Nature of Addiction
I was recently interviewed by Jack Nagle on his Podcast 'Real Drug Talk' and I think this is a conversation that many people will find interesting. Jack and I first met working at DayHab (our major sponsor); the one-time teenage ice addict and the boofhead Exercise Scientist. Among other things, Jack questions me about my thoughts and experiences around all kinds of addictive and obsessive behaviours, working with addicts, the 'less-conventional' addictions, my somewhat obsessive and addictive personality (I used to run 365 days a year, even when I was injured or sick) and the bullet I may have dodged by not picking up a beer when my mates did.
Sun, 30 Aug 2020 - 266 - #265 Oldies Lifting Heavy Sh*t
Dean Mawby, is a pioneer in the area of strength training for the 60 plus age group and this is a great chat about an important issue. I've long been an advocate of strength training for our 'more experienced' citizens, with benefits ranging from the obvious physical, practical and medical, to the not-so-obvious social, emotional and cognitive. Everything from improved strength, function, bone density endurance, balance, energy and overall physical performance, to improved self-esteem, confidence, happiness and quality of life. If I created a drug for our older population that could do what strength training can (1) that shit would sell like hotcakes (2) everyone would take it and (3) I'd be rich AF. *Note: as is often the way with Zoom recording, we had a few minor audio glitches in spots. Apologies. realstrengthstudio.com
Sat, 29 Aug 2020 - 265 - #264 Seek First to Understand...
This turns out to be something of a teaching session, with me banging on about everything from empathy, awareness and consciousness to communication, connection, subjective reality and viewing the world through someone else's window (journey, stories, beliefs, values, culture, fear, experiences, emotions). Mostly though, it's a conversation about the importance and value of understanding (but not necessarily agreeing with) other people and the variables that drive human behaviour (good, bad or indifferent).
Thu, 27 Aug 2020 - 264 - #263 Why Do I Say Yes, When I Should Say No?
This might be my favourite short episode of TYP. I love the topic and information in this instalment because it's relevant, relatable and real for everyone. Why? Because we all say yes, when we know we shouldn't. People-pleaser anyone? Scaredy-cat? This episode is actually one of the thirty sections from my online audio program. It hasn't been released (free to the public) until now. Enjoy.
Tue, 25 Aug 2020 - 263 - #262 Workplace Mental Health (and other stuff)
Anna Feringa is an expert in Workplace Mental Health (super interesting for right now), Author, Trainer and International Speaker who is passionate about building a deliberate, energising and healthy culture in workplaces. Sadly, Mental Health is now the leading cause of workplace disability globally. Despite the serious subject matter, this was a fun conversation (believe it or not) with an outstanding (and funny) communicator who 'gets' it. You'll like her. Enjoy. annaferinga.com.au
Sun, 23 Aug 2020 - 262 - #261 "Easier Said Than Done"
On a semi-regular basis, someone responds to one of my messages with this enlightening revelation "that's easier said than done", to which I reply, "of course it is; literally EVERYTHING is easier said than done". I will lose weight and keep it off forever (easy to say). I will quit smoking (also easy). I will change my life (easy). I'll never do that thing again (just more words). Which is why saying stuff is way more popular than doing stuff; it's easy and requires no actual sweat or ongoing effort. People who know me, know that "it's easier said than done..." is one of my ever-present messages, which is why I push people to step out of the theory (idea, intention, plan, goal) and into the practical process. The doing. As a Coach, all I can offer people is words (of encouragement, instruction, direction, education) which may or may not (when relevant), translate into action. FYI, I may momentarily step onto my soap box during this episode. Shocking, I know. Enjoy.
Sat, 22 Aug 2020 - 261 - #260 Transition-ABLE: The Power of Transitions
JoAnna Ferrari lived male for 53 years. She was successful in business and happily married with 3 children for 23 years before finally making the difficult decision and commitment to transitioning her gender from male to female. Her announcement sent a shockwave through her entire world that caused her to lose everything; family support, friends, career and nearly, her life. 'JJ' as she prefers to be called, had the kind of professional and personal life people dream of but the dream ended and the nightmare began when she openly told the world about starting her gender transition. Today JJ is happy in life and has again become a well-respected business coach, transition/performance consultant, requested keynote speaker and author. As you might imagine, this was interesting! Enjoy.
Thu, 20 Aug 2020 - 260 - #259 Meditation, Medication and Dedication
Imagine a funny, likeable, clever bloke who stands in front of audiences for a living to inspire, tell stories, encourage, empower and educate. A knockabout bloke who is one of Australia's most sought after speakers. A bloke who's succeeded in business and worked at the pointy end of a small organisation called Facebook. Now, imagine a bloke who suffers from PTSD, is medicated every day for depression, is a sexual abuse survivor and is a bloke who suffers from overwhelming and crippling anxiety. Well, that bloke is Nick Bowditch and this conversation was one of my favourites on TYP. Enjoy. nickbowditch.com
Tue, 18 Aug 2020 - 259 - #258 Lessons from the Whiteboard
Over the years, I've posted more than three thousand whiteboard messages on my @whiteboardlessons IG page and thousands more on my two FB pages. So, when Melissa showed up for episode 258 with 14 randomly picked whiteboards for me to explore, explain and expand on, I had zero idea what she had chosen or what I would be talking about, until she shared each one with me live as we recorded the episode. I think it turned out well. See what you think.
Sun, 16 Aug 2020 - 258 - #257 Listener Q and A (with Bobby Cappuccio)
This was going to be a two-part Q and A session with Bobby and I but it wound up being one long-ish episode. I apologise in advance as there are a few moments where the audio is not awesome (totally listenable though) and we manage to talk over each other a little, as is often the way when there's a slight delay chatting with someone on the other side of the world. Nonetheless, we covered some interesting topics and had fun. Enjoy.
Sat, 15 Aug 2020 - 257 - Self-Help vs. Helping Yourself
I started this episode thinking I was heading in a certain direction (topics, discussion, themes) and, as is often the way with a good conversation, I was totally wrong. We went somewhere totally different and what transpired was something much more powerful and interesting than my lame plan. It's not often that Melissa lets her guard down and opens up about her thoughts, experiences and challenges (probably because I talk too much) but that all changed in this episode. This is my favourite Melissa and me episode. Enjoy.
Thu, 13 Aug 2020 - 256 - #255 John McMahon (The Rev)
Well he's not so much a Priest as he is an ordained Minister but nonetheless, he's definitely a bogan (just like the host), complete with Harley and ink. It's fair to say that John McMahon (The Rev) is anything but typical and his approach to working with troubled kids is not exactly Chapter 4 of the 'Psychology for Teens' manual but maybe that's why his words and work resonate with both kids and parents alike. This was a fun conversation.
Tue, 11 Aug 2020 - 255 - #254 Tiff Cook Punches People in the Face
Tiff Cook booked in for a coaching session three years ago and hasn't stopped stalking me since (her words). And while she continues on her own personal and professional development journey, it's fair to say that she's been doing her own share of empowering, inspiring and coaching others towards their best lives. Tiff has a really interesting story and this conversation ended up being about one third podcast, one third coaching session and one third therapy session (for both of us). Enjoy.
Sun, 09 Aug 2020 - 254 - #253 The Science of Exercise (Part 2)
Exercise Physiologist and Elite Conditioning Coach Russ Jarrett (M.Ex.Sci.), joined me for a slightly-sciencey chat about all things fitness and exercise. Along the way, we discussed progressive overload, program design, finding the right 'dose', how and when adaptation happens, training intensity, recovery, over-training, kids training, periodisation, weight training for strength vs. power vs. hypertrophy vs. muscular endurance and lots more. @russell_jarrett1 russelljarrett.com.au

Thu, 06 Aug 2020 - 252 - #251 F*ck Plan B
Tony Doherty is a Business Man, Entrepreneur, Fitness Industry Pioneer, Gym Owner, Business Partner of Arnold Schwarzenegger and among other things, the Godfather of Australian Bodybuilding. He's also interesting, creative, funny and a curious mix of brutality and compassion. Tony and I go way back, we're good mates and this was a fun chat. If you're easily offended, it may not be for you. @tonydohertyoz
Wed, 05 Aug 2020 - 251 - #250 Anxious Kids (and Grown-ups)
Not only is Dr. Jodi Richardson an expert in the field of understanding, explaining and treating anxiety, she's also been dealing with it personally her entire life. So when she writes (two books on the topic), talks and teaches, she's speaking from, not only an academic, research and clinical perspective, but also from a place of lived experience. This is a great chat and I learned a lot. drjodirichardson.com.au @drjodirichardson
Sun, 02 Aug 2020 - 250 - #249 Metacognition: Thinking about Thinking
Your mind is 'You HQ'; it's your cognitive, social, personal, professional, academic, creative and practical headquarters. It's the place where stories are told, decisions are made, habits are formed, data is processed, lessons are learned, meaning is given, beliefs evolve, fears are embedded, understanding grows, confusion prospers, problems are solved (and created), calm and chaos are neighbours, life is shaped and personality reality is created. This Episode is a conversation I had recently with Tiffanee Cook on her podcast, Roll with the Punches. It is essentially a conversation and about the why, how and 'what-the-f**k' of thinking.
Sat, 01 Aug 2020 - 249 - #248 Acceptance-Commitment Therapy
Carly Taylor is an Educator, Nutritionist and Coach who uses a combination of Acceptance-Commitment Therapy, Stoic Philosophy, Japanese Psychology and Neuroscience to help people do stuff, change stuff, learn stuff and unlearn stuff (it has a lot to do with stuff) and to improve the quality of their lives (mindset, energy, choices, performance, outcomes) along the way. Oh, she's also married to that shy little wallflower, Paul Taylor. carlytaylorcoaching.com.au
Thu, 30 Jul 2020 - 248 - #247 Changing The Way We Age
New TYP favourite, Dr Ingrid Nielsen (Psychiatrist) is back and this time we dive into exercise, nutrition, lifestyle and all things health for our 'more experienced' folk. Among other things, Ingrid tells us how she increased her bone density by 36% (unheard of), is able to build muscle (function, performance, strength, power) in her seventies, completed a competitive 10k run five months after a knee replacement (at 72!) and has the V02 Max of a typical 37 year-old. She also shares her considered medical and personal thoughts around self-management (mental, emotional, physical, behavioural) as we age. As my mum would say, this episode 'is a goodie'.
Tue, 28 Jul 2020 - 247 - #246 What My Body Taught Me
My body and I go way back. We've spent years together. Sometimes connecting, sometimes not. We've often been at odds about the best course of action with things like food, sleep, exercise, stress and lifestyle because not surprisingly, my body has always been concerned with health, healing, recovery, energy and performance, whereas for much of my life I operated in the tastebud nirvana, instant gratification, comfort and convenience space. It took a while (only a few decades) but I finally came around and began to pay attention.
Sun, 26 Jul 2020 - 246 - #245 Secret Women's Business
I'll be honest, the 'business' wasn't really so secretive but it was definitely an interesting conversation focused on understanding and navigating the female experience (pre-pubescent through to post-menopausal) from a metabolic, hormonal, nutritional, recovery, energy management, exercise, sporting, performance and general health perspective. If you're a dude, this is probably not (so much) for you, but feel free to listen and learn something. I did. Unna Goldsworthy is an Exercise Physiologist, University Lecturer and Clinician who works primarily with women. @goldyguts
Sat, 25 Jul 2020 - 245 - #244 How I Manage Me
My biggest challenge has always been managing me. Specifically, managing my mind, body, emotions, energy, choices, actions, reactions, resources, finances, relationships and time. If I can't manage me (effectively), I can't manage my life. Over the years, I've developed a self-management system based on a series of questions, relating to the micro, meso and macro of my life. This episode is about that. Enjoy.
Thu, 23 Jul 2020 - 244 - #243 The Economic Pandemic
Covid 19 is wreaking havoc on a range of fronts; physically, mentally, emotionally, socially and of course, financially. On this episode of TYP, money man Jason Cunningham is back talking with Craig about managing our budget, career, business and sanity in the middle of these economically uncertain times. Enjoy.
Tue, 21 Jul 2020 - 243 - #242 How to Stop Giving Up (part 2)
Some of us have spent our lives 'almost' doing things. And sometimes we've actually done it. And then we've undone it. Starting. Stopping. Losing. Regaining. Focused. In the zone. Out of control. Inspired. Can't be bothered. Productive. Destructive. And not because we're bad, weak or flawed but rather, because we're human. This episode of TYP is a coaching session (of sorts) focusing on the cognitive, emotional, practical and behavioural components of creating lasting positive change. It turned out being longer-than-expected, so we have a part 1 and part 2 to the conversation. Enjoy.
Sun, 19 Jul 2020 - 242 - #241 How to Stop Giving Up (part 1)

Sat, 18 Jul 2020 - 241 - #240 The Introvert with the Extrovert Job
I worked with Justin Peckett back in the day when he was a St. Kilda Footballer (252 games) and I was Strength and Conditioning Coach for the Saints. His high tensile hamstrings, lower back and hips were my nemesis. In those days he was a laid back (almost in a coma), introverted professional athlete who loved a drink, loved his team mates, only spoke when necessary and tended not to waste energy. On anything. Ironically, the introvert now spends his work days in front of audiences (teams, companies, organisations) talking about organisational change, leadership, teamwork and human performance. We had a fun chat. Enjoy.
Thu, 16 Jul 2020 - 240 - #239 Is Work-Life Balance BS?
Paul Taylor is back and this time he and Craig explore the relationship we have with our job (career, business) and the potential impact (good or bad, positive or negative, productive or destructive) 'work' can have on us from a mental, emotional, physical and social perspective. Among other things, they discuss what 'work-life balance' (that old chestnut) actually means and whether or not it's a good metric for creating a healthy approach to our professional life. Oh, and Paul also talks about how a specific skill he acquired in the military (blowing up submarines) hasn't really been transferable to the corporate world. Surprising, I know.
Tue, 14 Jul 2020 - 239 - #238 The Psychology of Eating
I started thinking about this topic when I was the thirteen year-old human Labrador, eating everything he wanted and almost nothing he needed. Usually, when nobody was paying attention. Which might explain why I was called Jumbo, not Craig. Cheesecake anyone? The fascination continued as a young (and somewhat leaner) gym instructor, talking daily with club members about their 'what, why and how' of eating. Decades later, it's a conversation I've had literally thousands of times with thousands of people and in my opinion, it's a crucial piece of the health puzzle that doesn't get enough air time. If you and food have an 'interesting' relationship, this episode is definitely for you.
Sun, 12 Jul 2020 - 238 - #237 Culture, Leadership & Inspiration
A while back Craig chatted with Nicole Goodman from the Business Essentials Daily podcast and they had an interesting (and brief) chat around what it takes to create a business environment and culture where people feel valued, important and excited to go to work!
Sat, 11 Jul 2020 - 237 - #236 Outside the Echo Chamber
This is the fifth time Bobby has been on TYP and while he's always great, this was (for me) the best conversation we've had. He is truly one of the smartest people I know (and I know a few) and his ability to bring together neuroscience, human behaviour, personal experience, story-telling and humour is quite remarkable. I've known him for decades and in this conversation, he shared things about himself (big things) I'd never heard. Among other things, we talk about confirmation bias, challenging beliefs, blind faith, dealing with rejection, self-worth, identity, being wrong, the online battlefield and stories from Bobby's violent, abusive, dysfunctional childhood. So, not much at all. Enjoy.
Thu, 09 Jul 2020 - 236 - #235 Addicted to Almost Anything
Addiction doesn't only happen around drugs, gambling, booze and sex. It also happens with food. And work. And shopping. And plastic surgery. Being in control. Attention seeking. Fame. Danger. Exercise. Stealing. Gaming. Comfort. The truth is that most of us are (have been, will be) addicted to something at some stage. It might not be one of the more familiar addictions but it's there, it's real and it causes us to hide decisions and behaviours because deep down, we know we're being irrational, unhealthy and/or self-destructive. In this episode of TYP, Craig and his brother from another mother (Geoff Jowett) talk about their issues and more broadly, the capacity we all have to fall into the addiction trap.
Tue, 07 Jul 2020 - 235 - #234 How to Build Muscle
My fascination with muscle (size, appearance, strength, power, speed, function, sporting performance, muscular endurance, health, self-esteem, confidence) started forty years ago, as an insecure and curious teenager. Apart from human behaviour, it's maybe the thing I've studied most. Academically, incidentally and experientially. It's impossible to do this topic justice in ten podcasts, let-alone one, but let's call this a beginning.
Sun, 05 Jul 2020 - 234 - #233 Craig Presenting Live
This episode is the audio from a closing keynote Craig delivered a few years ago at the Australian Health and Wellness Summit in Melbourne. In it, he talks about bringing all the lessons, ideas and concepts shared by the other speakers (throughout the day) together and turning the theory into real-world decisions, actions and outcomes. He's somewhat inappropriate, somewhat fun and somewhat motivating. So, normal. Enjoy.
Sat, 04 Jul 2020 - 233 - #232 Dr Ingrid Nielsen
Ingrid Nielsen was a socially awkward kid born in South Africa in 1947. She became a nun at 16 (for five years). A medical student at 21. A Doctor at 27. Married at 30. A mother at 30. Was a forensic pathologist at 30. She completed more than 7,000 post mortems in 7 years (in Johannesburg). Was married to a cheating husband for five years. Divorced at 36. Became a single mum of three young kids (1, 2 and 4) at 35. Qualified as a Psychiatrist at 39 (after years of further study). Emigrated to Australia at 44. Was a work-aholic until 65. Was depressed for an entire year (at 55). Started working out (and having fun) at 65. Ran her first marathon at 68. Retired for two weeks at 69 and is currently working full-time as a Psychiatrist in a large hospital in Adelaide (at 72). Ingrid is an inspiration.
Thu, 02 Jul 2020 - 232 - #231 Rules, Rituals, Tribes and Cults
Simon Hammond is an Australian author, entrepreneur, journalist, business advisor and international keynote speaker. Like Craig, he is fascinated with thinking, rules, rituals, human behaviour and cults. Yes, cults. He's also interested in why we keep doing what doesn't work, why we're slow learners and why we don't like the brutal truth (so much so, he's written a book about it). He also believes that many of us are unintentionally training ourselves to be less resilient, less adaptable and more likely to capitulate under pressure. This is a fun and fascinating chat (one that involves the boys planning their own cult).
Tue, 30 Jun 2020 - 231 - #230 The Twenty-Year Over Night Success
Peaks. Troughs. Wins. Losses. Breakthroughs. Breakdowns. Life. These days Matt Collins is a journalist, radio host and podcaster but to say that it's been a challenging journey to get where he is, would be a massive understatement. This a great chat with a regular bloke who has persevered when most would have given up.
Sun, 28 Jun 2020 - 230 - #229 Perseverance
So many people are great at starting things. Projects. Programs. Diets. Courses. Transformations. In fact, some people have been starting things for years. Decades even. But finishing those things? Or persevering? Nah, not so much. Some people have been 'almost' changing their life for decades. In this episode of TYP, Craig talks about one of the least-sexy components of the personal development journey and why it matters so much.
Sat, 27 Jun 2020 - 229 - #228 Learning by Doing
I love talking with people who have turned their theoretical something into an actual something. Their idea into action. Passion into purpose. Intention into outcome. Potential into excellence. People who have dreamed, planned, executed and created in the middle of their insecurity, self-doubt, inexperience and fear. People who have built resilience, competence, confidence and effectiveness through doing what most avoid. For almost forty years, I've been watching people from all walks of life, all professions, all academic backgrounds, all personalities and all levels of ability, outwork and out-perform the majority. In this episode of TYP, I chat with Tommy and Josh from 'The Daily Talk Show' about what it truly takes to succeed.
Thu, 25 Jun 2020 - 228 - #227 The Science of Selling (Why We Buy Stuff)
There's that (kind of) famous saying that says 'stop buying things you don't need, with money you don't have to impress people who don't care about you'. Or something like that. My version is a little sweary-er. Adam Ballesty is a clever marketing bloke who has been running campaigns, building brands, developing strategies, leading teams and selling stuff to the masses for years. Sports stuff, fitness stuff, training stuff and booze. Lots of booze. I've always been fascinated with marketing because the 'what, how, when and why' of selling shit is essentially a study in behavioural psychology.
Tue, 23 Jun 2020 - 227 - #226 Goal Setting (a free workshop)
In this episode of TYP, Craig puts on his coaching hat and shares a 12-step goal setting process that he's been using with clients (and personally) for years. This is practical teaching session with an abundance of ideas, questions and strategies, so you may want to take notes. Enjoy.
Sun, 21 Jun 2020 - 226 - #225 Fasting, Longevity and Self-Experimentation
Rebel Dietician Vicky Kuriel is back and this time we go deep on the potential benefits of fasting (in all its forms), instinctive eating, social eating, emotional eating, self-experimentation, biological variability, insulin resistance, type two diabetes (and how to avoid it), living (much) longer through diet and why she has better genetics than her husband. eatplaythrive.com.au lowcarbchallenge.com.au
Thu, 18 Jun 2020 - 225 - #224 Beyond the Shame
OMG, this was such a powerful and interesting conversation with a powerful and interesting woman who has found a way to not only survive, but thrive, despite a history of abuse, depression, anxiety, secrecy, self-loathing, guilt and shame. And while it sounds like a heavy chat (and there were moments), it's ultimately a conversation full of hope, lessons, empowerment, wisdom and love. This is Mares Van Lambaart's second visit to The You Project and we love her. mary@thegappgroup.com.au
Tue, 16 Jun 2020 - 224 - #223 Melissa Interviews Craig
It's about time Melissa got to sit in the big chair and ask some questions, push some buttons, do some probing and steer the TYP ship for an hour or so. Among other things, she quizzes Craig on how he plans (if he plans) for each episode, how he trains himself these days, his social media strategy, his messages that are the most difficult to share, when he (personally) grew the most and why so many people don't achieve their goals. Enjoy.
Sun, 14 Jun 2020 - 223 - #222 Disordered Eating to Eating Disorders
Food.. such a small word, such a huge conversation. We humans are interesting creatures when it comes to our rules, rituals, stories and madness around eating. The 'when, why, how and what-the-fuck' of food is an exploration into psychology, emotion, sociology, physiology, pseudoscience, real science, culture and marketing. In this episode, Psychologist Jacqui Louder and the man with all the food issues attempt to make sense of it all. Well, some of it.
Thu, 11 Jun 2020 - 222 - #221 The Most Inspiring Woman I Know
Jane O'Brien is a special human and I don't say that lightly. We have been friends and colleagues for years and she is the most inspirational woman I know. And I know many. She inspires me to be a better person. FYI, Jane's voice has been affected significantly by her illness, so I (highly) recommend that you listen to this episode with headphones on a perhaps the volume up. She is definitely worth the inconvenience. Enjoy. @winningwithillness facebook.com/janeslightbulbmoments
Tue, 09 Jun 2020 - 221 - #220 Use it or Lose It
Exercise Physiologist, High Performance Coach and Fitness Educator Russ Jarrett is back and this time, he and Craig talk about the benefits of decluttering, the value of life-long learning, the age at which it becomes more difficult to 'get in shape', cognitive decline (as we age) and how to combat it, hourly rates, perceived value for money, re-opening Russ's gym post shutdown and how they might (both) change their respective business models, moving forward. russelljarrett.com.au
Sun, 07 Jun 2020 - 220 - #219 From Inmate to CEO
TYP favourite Mick Hall is back and this time, he and Craig chat about his fascinating journey out of addiction, dysfunction, mayhem and crime into his current life as a parent, employer, business man and owner of a private hospital. This is a chat about building something from nothing. It's about owning up and stepping up. It's about the importance of being adaptable. It's about learning by doing. And finally, it's about hope, positivity and possibility. dayhab.com.au
Thu, 04 Jun 2020 - 219 - #218 Managing the Madness
At the time of recording this episode (June 2, 2020), Bobby Cappuccio and his wife Aimi were bunkered down in their Los Angeles home in the middle of protests, riots, a 4pm curfew, a military presence (the National Guard), tens of thousands of police on the streets and, to say the least, a highly volatile, unpredictable and unfolding situation. This was an interesting, and at times confronting, conversation chatting with the dude from Brooklyn and his Nigerian wife about all things race, violence, survival, mindset, hope, love and Archie Bunker.
Tue, 02 Jun 2020 - 218 - #217 Herding Cats
Ex Richmond (Melbourne, Fremantle) football club(s) CEO Cameron Schwab is back and this time, he and Craig talk about what it takes to succeed and what we can learn from those who find a way to perform at the highest level (it's about much more than talent and genetics). They also discuss the lessons and lightbulbs in the new(ish) Netflix Documentary Series 'The Last Dance', the value and power of being adaptable, herding cats, the complexity of managing and leading elite athletes, whether or not we can be simultaneously satisfied and ambitious and Cam gives us a health update following his recent surgery for prostate cancer. We love Cam. Enjoy. designceo.com.au
Sun, 31 May 2020 - 217 - #216 Unlearning
Did you know that a great deal (maybe most) of human learning happens unconsciously and incidentally? Without any actual plan or intention to learn? And while we might think of learning as something that is typically a structured, conscious and/or academic process, in many cases, it is not. It's often something that happens despite us, not because of us. Quite often, without our knowledge or awareness. And while we might think of learning as a positive thing, that is not always the case. In fact, some of our learning (and subsequent beliefs and thinking) is the very thing that stands between us and growth, us and success, us and happiness. Sometimes, we need to learn to unlearn.
Sat, 30 May 2020 - 216 - #215 Surviving the Sh*t Show
There's a reason we get so much amazing feedback about Paul Taylor; he's always interesting, funny, inspirational and periodically, inappropriate. And he always tells a good yarn. In this episode, Paul and Craig talk about lessons learned, skills acquired, awareness gained and resilience built in the middle of the shit we didn't want, plan for or expect.
Thu, 28 May 2020 - 215 - #214 Toxic Friendships
What's the deal with 'friends' who aren't actually friendly? People who manipulate, undermine, resent and backstab their alleged friends. How and why is this a thing and more importantly, why do the victims of these crap friends stick around? In this brief episode, Craig flies solo, thinking out loud about the true meaning of friendship, familiarity and proximity, the friendship litmus test, being desperate to fit in and the consequences of inhabiting a toxic friendship.
Wed, 27 May 2020 - 214 - #213 Learning How to Learn
Dr. Richard Huysmans is an academic, pracademic and for the last two months, home-schooling dad. He has spent his life learning how to learn effectively and helping others do the same. In this episode of TYP, Richard and Craig talk about conscious and unconscious learning, academic and non-academic learning, learning styles, developing a personal learning system, studying vs. learning, going back to formal study and the health benefits of stimulating our brain as we age. au.linkedin.com/in/richardhuysmans
Tue, 26 May 2020 - 213 - #212 The Corona Mind
Psychologist Jacqui Louder is back on TYP and she's talking about some of the mental health challenges and consequences of the pandemic. Jacqui discusses some of her own Covid challenges and issues and more broadly, she and Craig talk about brain training, dealing with anxiety, why we're all control freaks, our 'survival' brain, why we struggle in stillness, the psychology of guilt and the addiction we have to being busy. Enjoy.
Sun, 24 May 2020 - 212 - #211 Self-Awareness and Self-Understanding
What is self-awareness? Why does it matter? How can we improve it? What impact does it have on everything from work, relationships and problem-solving to anxiety, happiness and connection? Why do I do think the way I think, feel the way I feel and behave the way I behave? Where does all this 'me stuff' come from and does it serve me or sabotage me? This brief episode is not so much a (typical) podcast, as it is Craig sharing a few thoughts and ideas around self-awareness (internal and external) and the understanding of self. It's a brief introduction to a very big conversation. Kind of a podcast-ette. Enjoy.
Sat, 23 May 2020 - 211 - #210 Re-Defining Success
TYP favourite, Geoff Jowett has reinvented himself over the last few years. The one-time high-flying, drug-taking, ego-driven, money-making entrepreneur had all the trappings of success, but none of the experience. The external show was a façade hiding a plethora of personal issues, challenges, addictions and pain. As many of you know, Geoff hit rock bottom and now describes that painful time as the best thing to ever happen to him. In this episode, we discuss the stories we have around money, tapping into the universal intelligence, the healing power of animals, dealing with criticism and negativity, being fully present, why soft is strong, being addicted to drama, getting triggered, the joy of stillness and the freedom of having nothing to prove. This is maybe my favourite Geoff chat.
Thu, 21 May 2020 - 210 - #209 Change Your Life Forever (Another Free Workshop)
What's your life telling you? Are you living your purpose, passion and values or are you treading water in your own personal Groundhog Day? Spinning your wheels? Living in a holding pattern? Or maybe worse? Are you over-thinking and under-doing? Wasting your potential? Self-sabotaging your way into frustration and stagnation? Don't beat yourself up; it's a pretty big club. We all want to live our best lives but what does that actually mean? And where does our idea of 'best' come from? Is a 'best life' experience about what's happening in our external (physical) world or is it more about that non-physical (internal) space? Maybe it's about both? This episode is not a prescription (of course) but rather, an interesting conversation around what it means to live our best life and how we might go about it.
Tue, 19 May 2020 - 209 - 208 Change Your Body Forever (A Free Workshop)
This is essentially a one hour coaching and teaching workshop. It's not so much a conversation as it is, an exploration into what it takes to be the person who 'gets in shape' (whatever that means for you) and stays that way. Forever. In it, Craig explores the seven key influencers and determinants of physical transformation. If you're after some motivational fluff, a self-help cuddle or a back rub, this is not for you. But, if you're sick of your own bullshit and you're ready to own up, step up and do the work, tune in.
Sun, 17 May 2020 - 208 - #207 Out of the Chaos and into the Calm
Jen Forster was a goal-setting, box-ticking, high-performer. She developed and owned successful businesses, gained an MBA, run 100km races, built her 'best' body, ventured to Everest base camp, did lots of cool things and in the middle of it all, she was miserable. From the outside looking in, her life was shiny and impressive but the internal experience, was quite different. This conversation is about Jen's story out of unconsciousness and anxiety and into consciousness and calm. Enjoy. jenniferforster.com
Thu, 14 May 2020 - 207 - #206 Can Science and Spirituality Co-Exist?
Apart from being the wife of AFL Hall-of-Famer Paul Roos, Tami Roos is a superstar in her own right, with a PhD in Parapsychic Science (it's a thing), a best-selling book and a successful career as a Corporate Speaker and Meditation Teacher. It's fair to say that Craig was excited to open this particular conversational door and go deep on all things science, spirituality, psychology and happiness. Enjoy. tamiroos.com
Tue, 12 May 2020 - 206 - #205 Stop F*cking Around (The Audio Version)
This brief episode is essentially a coaching session (or sorts), where Craig unpacks the first ten principles (of thirty) from his most popular book. The book his mother calls... the sweary one. Enjoy.
Sun, 10 May 2020 - 205 - #204 Love Languages, Decluttering & Spice Racks
One-time Journalist, TV Presenter and Sportscaster, these days Brad McEwan is immersed in the 'helping people' space and he's great at it. As an ambassador for Beyond Blue, a mental health advocate, corporate speaker and chief cheerleader for kindness, Brad is someone I love spending time with. In this episode, we talk about everything from friendly strangers and love languages to cyber-workshops, decluttering and his obsession with spices. bradmcewan.com
Thu, 07 May 2020 - 204 - #203 Learn, Laugh, Sweat
Luke Milton is a ripper. He's the ex NRL player who went to the US, established a totally Aussie brand (Training Mate) in the middle of LA, started working with celebrities, got a gig on 'Revenge Body' with Khloe Kardashian, set up three training centres (with more on the way) and is building a fitness empire while having fun, keeping it real and creating a space where people are encouraged to learn, laugh and sweat at the same time. matetogo.trainingmate.com
Tue, 05 May 2020 - 203 - #202 Dr. Cam is Back
Dr. Cam McDonald is back and this episode is seriously fascinating. And valuable. There is so much great information in this chat, you'll want to listen twice. Along the way, we talk about how, just being around certain people can be good or bad for your health. Why your job might not be a good 'fit' for your biology. Why certain colours, clothes, music and environments can boost or suppress your immune system and impact your nervous, cardiovascular, respiratory and endocrine systems, for better or worse. And lots more. ph360.me
Sun, 03 May 2020 - 202 - #201 The Chick Who Throws a Stick
68.92 metres (226feet). That's how far Kathryn Mitchell threw her javelin to win the 2018 Commonwealth Games Gold medal. Or as I like to call it, far as f*ck. It's also the furthest any female in the world has thrown a javelin in the last seven years. Apart from being an amazing athlete and competing at two Olympics and four Commonwealth Games, Kathryn is also a super-interesting, raw, real and relatable person who, like the rest of us, is trying to navigate and negotiate the peaks and troughs, joy and tears, pleasure and pain of the human experience. This chat was not what I expected. It was better.
Tue, 28 Apr 2020 - 201 - #200 Lisa Stephenson
These days, Lisa Stephenson is a successful Author, Entrepreneur, International Speaker, Corporate Consultant and Media Commentator but ten years ago, it was a very different story. At that time, Lisa believed she was in the middle of a happy and healthy marriage. That belief was shattered one day when her husband left the house and unexpectedly, didn't return. In the space of an hour, her life was turned upside down and a new life as a single mother had begun (and continues to this day). This podcast is a conversation about those ten years.
Sun, 26 Apr 2020 - 200 - #199 Ten Steps to Almost Anything...
In this episode, I step out of my Corona hammock and put on my coaching hat for a brief personal development session to share ten fundamental ideas and principles. These are concepts which have proven to be relevant, reliable and effective for many of the people I've worked with on their individual journeys of education, transformation and liberation.
Thu, 23 Apr 2020 - 199 - #198 Bianca Chatfield & Pete Shepherd
For this episode of the TYP, the very tall and charming Bianca Chatfield (6'2"), Melissa Cameron (6'0") and Pete Shepherd (6'7") sit down (remotely) with the 'neither tall nor charming' Craig, to talk about how they're all improvising, adapting and overcoming. Among other things, they discuss how their day-to-day thinking, rituals and habits are changing, what they're learning about themselves, decluttering, becoming a minimalist and what they might do differently on the other side of Corona. biancachatfield.com humanperiscope.com
Tue, 21 Apr 2020 - 198 - #197 The Body Whisperer
Ian O'Dwyer is a body-whisperer. Well, that's what I call him. More typically, he might be called a functional movement specialist but I've known him for decades and, over and over again, I have seen him do incredible 'hands-on' things with (seemingly) broken bodies (including mine) and sometimes, it's in as little as two or three minutes. I suspect he has some kind of weird healing superpower but at this point, I only have anecdotal evidence. In fact, I'm not a hundred percent sure he's mortal. Anyway, he has a really interesting backstory and journey and this was a fun conversation with a great Mate. feelsoma.com
Sun, 19 Apr 2020 - 197 - #196 To Hell and Back
This is the first time I've actually cried in a podcast. In part, this is a conversation about despair, abuse, identity, body-image and mental illness but thankfully, it's also a message of recovery, strength, survival, hope, healing and love. There's too much in this episode for me to do it justice with a few clumsy words. facebook.com/thegappgroup.com.au @lsbs_livestrongbestrong
Thu, 16 Apr 2020 - 196 - #195 Keeping up with the Jones's
The ex-drug-taking, rush-chasing, fast-talking, money-spending, self-destructing Geoff Jowett is back and thankfully, these days the manic entrepreneur has disappeared and the philosopher, teacher, deep thinker and compassionate human has emerged to share his thoughts, ideas and messages in his (truly) unique style. Among other things, we discuss comparison culture, how animals saved Geoff's life, acceptance, being a suicidal addict and coming out the other side, where joy lives, starting over and hitting the reset button on life. www.geoffjowett.com
Tue, 14 Apr 2020 - 195 - #194 The Calm in the Chaos
In this episode, Craig and TYP favourite Bobby Cappuccio talk about the psychology, philosophy, sociology, physiology and practicality of self-managing in the middle of our ever-evolving reality. This chat was recorded on Zoom with a few 'viewers' so, there's a small amount of interaction with the group.Enjoy.
Sun, 12 Apr 2020 - 194 - #193 Harps Visits The Daily Talk Show
This episode from the bunker is a conversation I had with Josh and Tommy from TSTD and among other things, we discuss my current technological learning curve, connecting with people who aren't in the same room, situational awareness, life without a gym, life without hugs, faith vs. knowledge and the art of adaptation.
Thu, 09 Apr 2020 - 193 - #192 High Performance, Leadership and Team Work
Founder of 'Leading Teams', Ray McLean is one of Australia's most respected, experienced and sought-after Facilitators, Speakers and Coaches in the space of High Performance, Leadership and Team Work. Ray has worked at the pointy end of both, sport and corporate, with organisations like the Sydney Swans, St Kilda Saints, Adelaide Crows, Carlton Blues, the Australian Cricket Team, the Boomers and Opals (National Basketball Teams), Sydney Kings (NBL), St George Illawarra (NRL) and NSW Waratahs (Rugby Union), the Australian Netball Team (The Diamonds), Sugar Australia, Axeio and Murdoch Partners. Tue, 07 Apr 2020 - 192 - #191 Unconventional Workout Ideas
Over the last fortnight, I've been exploring three key questions with people: (1) How do I avoid going crazy? (2) How do I avoid going broke? (3) How do I avoid going backwards with my training? This podcast is about question 3. Not surprisingly (to me), some people are actually getting great results away from their 'normal', simply because they're now stimulating their body in a new way. In this episode, I share some variations (from slight to significant) on some old concepts. Despite the title, not all of my suggestions are specific to exercise. If you're after some new ideas, a little science and a laugh or two, this is a good chat.
Sun, 05 Apr 2020 - 191 - #190 Cameron Schwab: What's Important?
Former Richmond, Fremantle and Melbourne FC CEO and TYP favourite, Cameron Schwab returns to chat with us about his recent cancer diagnosis and subsequent journey. On February 14, Cam was diagnosed with prostate cancer and on February 23, he spoke at our TYP conference knowing that the next day he would find out whether or not the cancer had spread through his body. I won't tell you the rest of the story (you'll have to listen) but I will tell you that I love the way Cam thinks, teaches and shares so authentically. This was a very thoughtful conversation. PS. Apologies for the poor audio quality on my microphone. Getting a new one tomorrow. Won't happen again. designceo.com.au
Thu, 02 Apr 2020 - 190 - #189 Reinventing Your Business / Career
Like many others, Leanne Hamilton is a small business owner who is trying to navigate her new unexpected normal. With a very 'hands-on' service (a functional movement studio called Swift Fitness), 17 staff, 300 clients and significant weekly expenses, Leanne (like many others) has been in the middle of a very steep learning (and adapting) curve over the last few weeks. With massive pressure and uncertainty and almost no sleep, Leanne has been working tirelessly to adapt her business model, delivery of service and the way she connects with and supports her clients. In this episode, Craig and Leanne have a very raw, real and practical conversation about 'finding a way' professionally, personally, financially, emotionally and mentally. swiftfitness.com.au swiftfitness.thinkific.com online@swiftfitness.com.au
Tue, 31 Mar 2020 - 189 - Our New Financial Normal
Not only has only has our current global challenge impacted us mentally, physically, emotionally and socially but obviously, there's also been a massive impact on careers, businesses, industries, professions and of course, our individual financial situations. In this episode, Harps goes deep with our resident financial guru, Jason Cunningham from Network Ten, Triple M radio and of course, The Practice (his company). They talk practically, empathetically, strategically and humorously about how we might navigate our current reality. Please find below the attachments discussed in the episode: • The first is The Practice's Business Continuation Plan - a step by step process of the things we as business owners should be looking at; • The second is detail around the COVID-19 Small Business Stimulus Support on Offer from the Government. This document will obviously be updated as additional measures are introduced. • The third is what to do if you have been stood down by your employer. • The forth is a guide to applying for the Centrelink payments.
Sun, 29 Mar 2020 - 188 - #187 Paul Taylor: Instalment 4
The Irishman is back and this time he and Harps talk about lessons learned from his military experience, The Stockdale Paradox (it's a thing), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (another thing), reframing and resilience, finding the possibilities in the mayhem and what the Stoics might have thought about our current situation. Enjoy. https://www.globalhealthnow.org/2020-03/covid-19s-stop-gap-solution-until-vaccines-and-antivirals-are-ready https://www.frontiersin.org/articles/10.3389/fnhum.2019.00466/full https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/opord-covid-19-what-we-need-do-some-helpful-resources-paul-taylor/?trackingId=gcGYu3oeS%2FKn%2BJnZl0A5kw%3D%3D
Thu, 26 Mar 2020 - 187 - #186 And Now Our Gym is Closed
After 50,000 PT sessions, 35 years in the fitness industry, 30 years training athletes and 25 years owning gyms, Craig has a few ideas about optimising time, energy and genetic potential in less-than-ideal situations. So for this episode, he dusts off his Exercise Science degree, drags his Everlast singlet out of retirement and goes deep exploring the multitude of options, graduations and variations we have at our disposal to be able to exercise (train, move) productively, effectively and safely at home with zero exercise equipment. PS. Apologies for the audio quality, this is the first episode recorded away from the studio, with Craig and Melissa in different locations. We're figuring it out as we go and we're working hard to keep producing great content for you.
Tue, 24 Mar 2020 - 186 - #185 Boosting Your Immune System
Podcast favourite Doctor Cam McDonald is back and this time he's teaching us how boost our immune system, understand what our body is telling us, use stress to our advantage, become more aware in our environment, the (super) importance of sleep and lots more. https://ph360.me/coronavirus-immuneboost-friendsfamily/ https://www.facebook.com/events/213708616354685
Sun, 22 Mar 2020 - 185 - #184 Staying Awkward with Pete Shepherd
This is an episode full of ideas, stories, inspiration, insights and strategies that will resonate with many. Personally, I loved it. I actually forgot I was recording and got lost in the conversation with one of Australia's best thinkers, communicators and coaches. If you're a human, you should listen.
Fri, 20 Mar 2020 - 184 - #183 Navigating a New Normal
While it could have been a heavy conversation, it turned out to be one of the silliest and funniest chats Melissa and I have ever had. On air or off. In the middle of some practical thoughts and ideas around our current challenge, I managed to share two stories about Melissa that she definitely didn't want shared publicly. You're welcome. Of course I'm in trouble but it was totally worth it. #ohwell
Wed, 18 Mar 2020 - 183 - #182 Mark from MAFS and Bianca from The BLOCK
I loved this chat. It was a fun episode with great stories, laughs and some genuinely interesting insights from Bianca Chatfield and Mark Scrivens. Among other things, Craig, Mark and Bianca talk about the non-reality of reality TV, how their relationship unfolded, Bianca's feelings about marriage, Mark's time as a soldier and federal policeman, self-management under pressure, mental health challenges, eleven year-olds wanting to do a 'collab' with Bianca, navigating Corona and lots more. Enjoy.

Enjoy.
Tue, 10 Mar 2020 - 180 - #179 Bog Rolls, Brain Fades and Public Hysteria
This episode is a Q and A session; listener questions and my answers, thoughts and ideas. It was a funny, interesting and thoughtful conversation (with Melissa) and along the way, I talk about things I've never shared publicly. Among other things, we discuss the Corona Virus (of course), my 'churchy' phase (I go deep), keeping 'your wife happy' (don't blame me, not my question), who mentors me, at-home training for mums, my study tips, the amazing recent growth of TYP, how I eat, what I'll do after my PhD, potential inclusions to the school curriculum and towards the end, I get 'told off' by one of our listeners. Enjoy.

They've shared the stage and microphone with the likes of Sir Richard Branson, The Black Eyed Peas, Heath Ledger, Destinys Child, Chris Rock and now... Harps. Oh well, they started out strong. This is a fun chat with two fun people.
Sun, 01 Mar 2020 - 176 - #175 Ayurveda, Consciousness and Ancient Wisdom
Mark Bunn is an interesting, thoughtful, measured and humble teacher. He also has a gift for demystifying, what can be, the mystical and confusing. Going into this podcast, my intention was a one hour chat. Well, we spoke for ninety minutes before I even thought about the time. If you're interested in, or curious about, eastern philosophies and practices, spirituality, ancient wisdom, equanimity and the interconnectedness of humanity, you'll probably enjoy this.
Thu, 27 Feb 2020 - 175 - #174 Tony Blauer, Know Fear
Tony Blauer has been in the martial art, self-defense, defensive tactics, and combatives industry for over four decades.Tony founded Blauer Tactical Systems (BTS) in 1985 and it has grown into one of the world's leading consulting companies specializing in the research and development of performance psychology, personal safety, and close quarter tactics & scenario-based training for law enforcement, military, and professional self-defense instructors. It has been used by defensive tactics and combative trainers all over the world for over 30 years. After decades of interviewing victims of violent encounters and studying violence, he then created the KNOW FEAR program which focuses on managing fear through self-awareness, resiliency and a 'movement' mindset. https://blauerspear.com/
Tue, 25 Feb 2020 - 174 - #173 Managing Your Mind (good luck with that)
Jacqui Louder is one of Australia's leading Sport Psychologists, a good friend of Craig's and for a decade or so, was his co-host on 'The Science of Sport' (SEN sports radio)in Melbourne. This conversation was interesting, thought provoking, educational and funny. And the bit about cake decorating was weird. Enjoy.
Sun, 23 Feb 2020 - 173 - #172 Gifts From Grief
At 17, Rachel Pope had her whole world thrown into chaos when her father was given weeks to live. He died at 47. Eight years later she tragically lost her brother in a car accident and then at 37, the mum of two became a widow, when her husband Ray passed away from the same cancer that killed her dad. Tragedy, grief and death are unavoidable components of the human experience, which is why conversations like this one are so important. There's definitely no 'three-step' plan when it comes to grieving or supporting others through their grief but opening the door on this topic is definitely a step in the right direction. These days, Rachel helps people find some light in their darkness with her book (Gifts from Grief), her speaking and the community she's building to empower and support others. This was a really important chat and I was privileged to be part of it.
Thu, 20 Feb 2020 - 172 - #171 So You Want to be a Speaker?
Professional speaking is something I'm asked about often. How I got started. How I work. How it works. Getting work. Building a profile. What organisations want. And don't want. Putting together a presentation, keynote or workshop. Where to start. What to charge. When to charge. Reading a room. Building confidence, awareness and skill. Developing content. Being relevant and relatable. Performing under pressure. Dealing with anxiety. Scripted versus freestyle. Preparation. And lots more. This episode will be relevant and valuable for some, kind-of interesting for others and maybe 'come-back-next-time' for a few. Having said that, there are lots of ideas and suggestions shared which are transferrable and broadly applicable. Enjoy.
Tue, 18 Feb 2020 - 171 - #170 Travis Bell, The Bucket List Guy
Travis Bell is a globally recognised Speaker, Coach and Thought Leader who encourages, educates and empowers people around the world to live purpose-filled, fun-filled, regret-free, don't-die-wondering (type of) lives. Oh, and he's also 'The World's No.1 Bucket List Expert'. We had an interesting chat with plenty of take-aways. Enjoy.
Sun, 16 Feb 2020 - 170 - #169 Fred Schebesta
At the ripe old age of 38, Fred Schebesta (creator of comparison website Finder) is on AFR's Young Rich List with a personal fortune of $193 million. Which is quite the achievement. Of course. But what's way more impressive for me, is the bloke behind the business, brand and money. I'm not exactly sure what I expected going into this conversation but what I got was way more than I hoped for. He's awesome. I know I always say this, but this episode (no, really) is in my new all-time top 3. Among other things, we discussed Fred's relationship with money, his parenting style, why he employed a divorce coach and an emotional coach, quarantine saving, trading time for money, why he teaches his kids to negotiate, self-loathing, self-awareness, the 'you' experience and his three tips for starting a business. Enjoy.
Thu, 13 Feb 2020 - 169 - #168 Fearlessly Failing
Recently, I was on the Lola Berry Podcast (Fearlessly Failing) and I loved it. Lola has amazing energy, is genuinely curious, asked great questions and not surprisingly, we went deep down the conversational rabbit hole, exploring the complexities, intricacies and challenges of the human experience. This was one of those podcasts that felt more like an organic, interesting conversation with a fascinating person than it did, some kind of strategic or planned interview (credit to Lola). For me, the hour felt like twenty minutes. Enjoy.
Tue, 11 Feb 2020 - 168 - #167 Challenging the Status Quo
In this Episode of TYP, one of our favourites (Geoff Jowett) is back sharing the love, laughs, lessons and inspiration in his unique, blunt and funny-AF manner. Among other things, Geoff talks about challenging the status quo, critical thinking, creating a new path, his seven rules (the ones that changed his life) and how he managed to blow a million dollars a year on (don't ask) at the height of his hedonistic lifestyle. Oh, and in the last five minutes he reveals something that almost makes Craig cry.
Sun, 09 Feb 2020 - 167 - #166 How to Optimise Your Workouts
For this episode, I dust off my jockstrap and step temporarily back into Exercise Science mode to chat with Sport Scientist, Educator and Elite Conditioning Coach (A.I.S., St. Kilda FC, Melbourne FC, Australian Women's Cricket Team) Russ Jarrett and we go deep on functional training, working out over fifty, biofeedback, kettlebells (yes or no), warming up, stretching - yes or no (for sporting performance), training intensity, correcting poor posture, finding the right program, training volume and frequency, exercise myths and fallacies, kids and weights, how to recover optimally, getting massive... and lots more.
Thu, 06 Feb 2020 - 166 - #165 What Does 'Getting Conscious' Mean?
Dr Ali Walker is the author of 'Get Conscious: How to Stop Overthinking and Come Alive', she's also a social scientist, media presenter, corporate speaker and educator in the fields of sociology and social psychology. Luckily for us, she's back on The You Project to talk about overcoming our programming and self-limiting beliefs, what it means to live consciously in an unconscious world and lots of other 'social science-y' (type) stuff.
Tue, 04 Feb 2020 - 165 - #164 This Wasn't My Plan
What happens when life makes our dream a physical impossibility? What do we do? How do we respond? From the age of five, Shaun Spence dreamed of being a professional rugby league player in the NRL and by the time he was a teenager, his life revolved around making that dream a reality. His talent was recognised by the Wests Tigers as a fifteen year-old, when they signed him and sent him to boarding school on a sporting scholarship. In his first senior season, Shaun showed great promise, playing nine games and scoring a try in his second game but amazingly, that was it. The lifelong dream was over. He was forced to retire at the ripe old age of twenty-two, having been on the receiving end of seventeen concussions (no, that's not a mistake). In this episode, Craig and Shaun talk about overcoming disappointment, building resilience, self-pity, self-management, choosing our purpose, finding our reason, learning to adapt, recognising the lesson and of course, coming up with a plan B. Enjoy.
Sun, 02 Feb 2020 - 164 - #163 The Mental Health Episode
In this episode, I was interviewed by Tristan Simmons from The Mental Health Connection Podcast and we had such a fascinating chat that I decided to share it here on TYP (thanks to Tristan). It's fair to say that we cover plenty of territory and I'm sure this will be an interesting and valuable conversation for many of our listeners. Enjoy.
Thu, 30 Jan 2020 - 163 - #162 Taylor Adams
In this episode Craig sits down with Collingwood young gun Taylor Adams and the boys go deep on the intricacies of high-performance (in sport and life), happiness, connection, self-management, finding balance, developing a personal blueprint, dealing with disappointing performances, self-awareness, self-punishment (it's a thing), anxiety, giving and receiving feedback and the ongoing journey of personal growth. It was a fun chat.
Tue, 28 Jan 2020 - 162 - #161 Rules, Rituals and OCD
Bobby Cappuccio is back and in this episode, he and Craig discuss everything from Bobby's rituals, rules and general OCD, to building self-belief, resilience, skill and confidence. They also talk about finding a mentor, the line between healthy and unhealthy habits and the stupid advice that well-meaning friends and family often give us. Craig also asks Bobby if we can be simultaneously content and ambitious.
Sun, 26 Jan 2020 - 161 - #160 Andrew Jobling
Andrew is an Author, Speaker, Mentor, former AFL player (St.Kilda), Business Consultant, former School Teacher and ex business partner of mine. This chat was essentially two middle-aged blokes talking about where we've been, what we've fucked up, what we've learned, where we are and what's next. Enjoy.
Thu, 23 Jan 2020 - 160 - Episode 159: Kate Save.. Dietician, Exercise Physiologist, Entrepreneur
As well as creating and growing 'Be Fit Food' from idea into an eight million dollar (annual turnover) business in five years and winning Telstra business of the year, Kate Save is also a Dietitian, Exercise Physiologist, Mum and Wife who's endured a lifetime of her own personal health challenges. We had a really interesting chat.
Tue, 21 Jan 2020 - 159 - #158 The Hustle and Grind Myth
I knew Geoff Jowett when he was a high-profile, high-flying, multi-millionaire doing all the hustling, media, drugs, booze, sex, spending and distractions. He was smart, charismatic and kind of successful. Kind of because, at the same time, he was also broken, disconnected, addicted, miserable and lost. In the middle of his apparent success, he was mentally, emotionally, socially and spiritually bankrupt. That was then but these days, Geoff is a different person. The penthouse has made way for the one bedroom flat. The Maserati for the old Hyundai Getz. The drugs and grog for horses, meditation and nature. The obsessive bodybuilding for golf. The getting for giving. The chaos for calm. And the misery for joy. As a friend, I'm super proud of how far he's come. His realness, rawness, honesty, awareness and humour, make this one of my favourite TYP chats ever. Don't miss it.
Sun, 19 Jan 2020 - 158 - #157 Dr Hannah Macdougall
Apart from being an elite athlete in two sports (swimming and cycling), two-time Paralympian, former world record holder, academic smarty pants, motivational speaker, inclusion advocate, mindfulness coach and all-round funny bugger, Hannah is also currently training to qualify for the 2020 Tokyo Paralympic Games. We had a fun chat. Enjoy.
Wed, 15 Jan 2020 - 157 - #156 Nick Dal Santo
Nick Dal Santo is one of those blokes who was a very good AFL player (322 games, All-Australian, runner up in the Brownlow), is a polished media presenter (Foxtel and SEN) a loving husband and dad (of course) but as you'll discover in this episode of TYP, he's just a really good human. Like, awesome. Super generous with his time, energy, knowledge and experience. We had a great chat about everything from high-performance, elite sport, leadership, work ethic and maximising talent, to what makes a champion, self-awareness, character, raising kids and growing up in the country (something we both did).
Mon, 13 Jan 2020 - 156 - #155 My Favourite Whiteboard Lessons
In January 2016, I decided to write one of my daily Facebook messages on my office whiteboard and post a photo of it, instead of my daily ritual of typing a few words on a keyboard. While I can't say it revolutionised the world, I can say that (for some reason) the same words hand-written on my whiteboard created far greater connection, impact and interaction than a regular typed post. Like, times ten. People seemed to resonate with the synergy of old (handwriting) and new (social media). Four years down the track, I've written more than three thousand messages on my whiteboard, with some of them being turned into posters, mugs, T shirts, calendars and even, a song (not all with my approval or knowledge). Oh, and of course there's my Instagram page (@whiteboardlessons), which has slowly climbed from zero to just over twenty thousand followers in the last few years. In this episode, I talk about some of my favourite messages (and yours) and the meaning, idea and intention behind them.
Thu, 09 Jan 2020 - 155 - #154 Why Are We So Dissatisfied?
Cecily Schwab is a Clinical Psychologist, Coach, Business Consultant and wife of one of our TYP Faves, Cameron Schwab. In this episode, Craig and Cecily go deep on why many of us seem to be perpetually dissatisfied, where it comes from, how it works and what we might do about it. And lots more head stuff. Of course.
Tue, 07 Jan 2020 - 154 - #153 How Dare You Not Be Like Me
As Podcasts go, this is super brief. Nonetheless, in under ten minutes, I manage to riff on confirmation bias, life in the echo chamber, loving people who aren't like us, letting go of the need to be right, being okay with uncertainty and unfamiliarity and the idea of living harmoniously in a world full of different ideas, cultures, beliefs, lifestyles and people. This was recorded on my phone, so the audio is a 6-ish, sorry. Hopefully, the content is a 9.
Sun, 05 Jan 2020 - 153 - #152 The Episode About Everything
I recently joined my adoptive sons on @thedailytalkshow for a nearly-two-hour chat and it's fair to say we covered plenty of ground including: addiction, expectations, the nature of truth, knowledge vs. faith, convenient science, genetics, uncertainty, the first two months of my PhD, how success and failure co-exist, old vs. new media, the birth of low-fat eating, the food pyramid, unlearning, how frustration works, is perpetual happiness a possibility and towards the end of the show, I do some in-the-moment coaching with Tommy, Josh and Mister 97. This is a new favourite of mine.
Thu, 02 Jan 2020 - 152 - #151 5 Questions for Humans
This podcast is Craig reading, reflecting and riffing on the following five questions (from his book). 1. What's my life telling me? 2. What are my core values and how do I live in alignment? 3. Why do I self-sabotage? 4. How does the other person see this? 5. How can I change the way I think?
Thu, 26 Dec 2019 - 45min - 151 - #150 Jules Lund
Jules Lund is a gun. In business and in life. You know when you're keen to meet someone and when you finally connect, they're even better in person? Well, Jules is exactly that. For real. Such a genuinely good bloke with a great heart, great mind and great energy. Gave me a hug at the front door, spoke from the heart, shared his journey (peaks and troughs), got vulnerable and travelled to my studio on a 44 degree day without a complaint, expecting nothing in return. I love him.
Sun, 22 Dec 2019 - 1h 02min - 150 - #149 Q&A: Food, Fitness and Function
This is a 'Q and A' session where Craig answers your 'Getting in Shape' (type) questions. He explores mindset, weights, cardio, finding the right program, training (in general), nutrition, supplements, time-efficient exercise, progression vs. maintenance, the value of a PT, calories (do they still matter?), over-training, biofeedback, excuses vs. reasons and lots more.
Wed, 18 Dec 2019 - 1h 18min - 149 - #148 Bobby Cappuccio: The Coach's Coach
Bobby Cappuccio grew up in the middle of poverty, abuse, rejection, bullying and dysfunction on a range of levels. He was also given up for adoption, has Tourette's syndrome and was physically deformed (requiring four reconstructive facial surgeries). Despite his numerous setbacks and personal challenges, Bobby has become (in my opinion) one of the best Coaches, Speakers and Educators in the world. And I have seen many. He's also one of my Mates. Enjoy. *Note: there are a few moments where the audio quality dips a little, as Bobby is chatting with me from Singapore. Apologies.
Sun, 15 Dec 2019 - 1h 15min - 148 - #147 High Performance in Sport and Life
I was recently interviewed by Isobel Ross from the 'Peak Endurance' Podcast. Isobel is one of Australia's best Ultra Endurance Runners and while our conversation revolved mostly around running and competitive sport, we covered plenty of things in the mindset, performance, preparation and self-management space, which also relates to life in general. In other words, there's plenty in this chat for everyone. Athlete or not. Also, two amazing things I want to share with you (1) two days before we did this podcast, Isobel ran and won a 179km race (you read that correctly) and (2) she turns fifty soon! Enjoy.
Thu, 12 Dec 2019 - 41min - 147 - #146 Getting the People Stuff Right (in Business)
This is a teensy-weensy poddy (10:50) that I recorded for the good folk from the Business Essentials Program. It came up pretty well, so I thought I'd share it. Because they're more professional, more grown up and way fancier than me, you'll hear no fucks and not one dick joke. I'm sorry. For those of you who have been listening to me for a while, the content is nothing new so consider it a refresher.
Wed, 11 Dec 2019 - 10min - 146 - #145 Strippers, Pole Dancers and Crooks
Kennetta Hutchens left school at year ten, was a stripper at twenty-one, was on Melbourne's biggest billboard (wearing not much) at the same time, was managing seventy strippers at twenty-three, worked in the exotic dance industry for over a decade, partied harder than most for twenty years (sometimes staying awake for five days!) and at thirty-four, set up Victoria's first Pole Dancing Studio, Pole Divas, which has grown into a thriving organisation, with fifteen hundred students and studios in seven locations. Fortunately, she's now settled the-fuck down and is a responsible mum and business owner with a super fascinating story.
Sun, 08 Dec 2019 - 1h 11min - 145 - #144 Two Metre Peter Returns
Before the Big Fella and I started recording this episode, I gave him a piece of paper with a bunch of ideas and topics that I thought we might talk about. We didn't. More than an hour later, neither of us had drawn breath or even thought about the piece of paper. Subsequently, this episode is not so much a typical podcast, as it is a really interesting organic conversation that happened to be recorded. It's one of my faves.
Thu, 05 Dec 2019 - 1h 16min - 144 - #143 Boobs, Bras and Business
For much of her life, Maxine Windram dealt with the mental, emotional, physical and social pain of big boobs (her term, don't yell at me), embarrassing shopping experiences, incompetent sales people, ill-fitting bras and a complete lack of knowledge, service or care for people in her situation. In 2006, off the back of her experiences, some tireless research and countless conversations with other women (and also with zero business or sales experience), Maxine and her mum Lin, launched Brava; a brand catering for women in the D to K cup range. Thirteen years down the track, Brava is an award-winning company with a thriving online business, six retail stores (in Sydney and Melbourne) and an amazing culture that both customers and staff love to be in. I think most people will enjoy this chat but especially those thinking about building a business or brand (of any kind) one day, but have no idea where to start.
Tue, 03 Dec 2019 - 1h 04min - 143 - #142 Paul Chek: Mindful, Mystical and Magical
This Episode is anything but typical. There hasn't been a TYP like it and there might not be another for a while. Paul and I explore all things physical, spiritual, metaphysical, philosophical and mystical and if you're into such things, you'll dig it. If not, your head might explode. Personally, I loved it. And love Paul. *PAUL'S BIO: Paul Chek is a world-renowned expert in the fields of corrective and high-performance exercise kinesiology, stress management and holistic wellness. For over thirty years, Paul's unique, integrated approach to treatment and education has changed the lives of many of his clients, his students and their clients. By treating the body as a whole system and finding the root cause of a problem, Paul has been successful where traditional approaches have consistently failed. Paul is the founder of the CHEK (Corrective Holistic Exercise Kinesiology) Institute, based in California, USA and the P~P~S Success Mastery Coaching Program. He is a prolific author of books, articles and blog posts. In addition, Paul is a registered Native American Spirit Guide and Medicine Man with the Nemenhah Band (people of the truth) and Native American Traditional Organization (NAC) where he initiates a process of awakening often fulfilling comprehensive healing through sacred ceremony.
Sun, 01 Dec 2019 - 1h 41min - 142 - #141 Paul Taylor
The bloke with more degrees than a thermometer is back in the studio sharing his wit, charm, wisdom, directness and motivation in his unique and engaging style. Neuroscientist, Nutritionist, Exercise Physiologist, Affiliate Professor (Uni. San Franciso), High Performance Coach, Corporate Speaker and Author. Other than that, he's done fuck all. *Oh, and BTW, Paul is speaking at our first ever TYP Conference in March.
Wed, 27 Nov 2019 - 1h 17min - 141 - #140 Once Upon a F*ckin' Time
This episode is a random mix of nine brief self-contained messages, ideas and stories all with a focus on thinking, doing and creating better. It's a kind-of coaching, thinking-out-loud session.
Sun, 24 Nov 2019 - 32min - 140 - #139 Turning Your Idea, Skill or Passion into a Business
About twenty years ago, two young blokes flew from Sydney to see Australia's biggest PT facility in action (mine) and to talk to me about creating their own business. What was meant to be a couple of hours, turned into two days! Not long after that meeting, Andrew Simmons and Geoff Jowett (who's since moved on) created Vision Personal Training and their original idea (to set up one training facility) has morphed into a fitness industry powerhouse, with 59 centres across Australia and New Zealand. In this candid conversation, Andrew and I talk about turning an idea (fitness or other) into a living, breathing business. We also talk about understanding the market, having a point of difference, understanding the needs of clients (no matter what the industry, service or product), evolving and adapting to the ever-shifting business landscape and the personal dangers of 'becoming' the business.
Thu, 21 Nov 2019 - 54min - 139 - #138 16 Hours on a Bus for a Coaching Session
Michael Markezic is a TYP listener and wanna-be Coach, who endured sixteen hours on a bus (to and from Canberra), just to spend an hour asking me some questions. That's commitment. I loved this conversation, his questions and his genuine curiosity to learn, develop and understand the human condition. Among other things, we discuss ready-ness to change, excuses vs. reasons, thoughts on motivational speakers, choosing a path, optimising potential, why people give up, standing out in a sea of competitors, the need to innovate and create (vs. imitate and follow), my book writing process and why stories matter.
Tue, 19 Nov 2019 - 1h 13min - 138 - #137 The Future of the Fitness Industry
Like me, Ken Baldwin is a Fitness Industry dinosaur but unlike me, he's still knee deep educating, training and inspiring Fitness Professionals to be their best for themselves, and of course, their clients. Ken is the Director of Education for Perform Better Australia, the Founder of The Healthy Ageing Institute and is on the advisory board for the Functional Ageing Institute. With over 30 years of experience in all areas of Fitness & Health, Ken now focuses on developing research based programming around the Active Ageing. In this episode of TYP, Ken and I talk about the state and direction of the fitness industry (past, present and future), how to age intelligently, specialising versus being a generalist (as a fitness or health professional), why most PTs have short careers (18 months on average), the importance of building rapport with clients and the importance of walking your talk and being a role model.
Sun, 17 Nov 2019 - 1h 10min - 137 - #136 Sharelle McMahon
Sharelle McMahon is maybe the best athlete I've worked with, and that's saying something. Fierce, gifted, passionate, courageous, well prepared, wildly competitive and an amazing work ethic. Apart from Captaining the Australian Netball Team, Melbourne Phoenix and Melbourne Vixens, Sharelle also won two world championship, two Commonwealth Games Gold medals and represented Australia 118 times over thirteen years. In this episode, we discuss eating disorders and body dysmorphia in sport, dealing with stress and anxiety at the elite level, superstitions and rituals, building confidence and self-belief, feeling like a fraud (yep, her too) and she even throws an ex-boyfriend under the bus. This is a fun and revealing chat.
Thu, 14 Nov 2019 - 1h 08min - 136 - #135 Lisa Alexander
Lisa Alexander is the Coach of one of Australia's most successful sporting teams; The Diamonds (our National Netball Team). She is a Coach, Teacher, Mentor and Leader at the highest level. In this episode of TYP, Lisa and Craig talk about performing under pressure, what makes a great coach, developing potential, lessons in failure, who succeeds and why and knowing when to 'hang it up'.

Speaker, Author and former Police Inspector Paul O'Brien returns to chat about a broad range of subject matter, including Imposter Syndrome, self-doubt, resilience, middle-of-the-night weird thoughts and freak-outs... and much more. Paul also takes Craig to task regarding the way he puts himself down.
Thu, 07 Nov 2019 - 1h 13min - 134 - #133 Personality Types, Consciousness and Overthinking

Tue, 05 Nov 2019 - 1h 03min - 133 - #132 12 F***ing Rules for Success
A few years ago, I wrote a silly little list in about ten minutes. That list became the most read, commented on, shared, translated and plagiarised thing I've ever written. People have even turned it into products without permission. Calendar anyone? In this episode of TYP, Melissa and I talk about the idea behind, the value of, and the implementation of each rule.
Thu, 31 Oct 2019 - 1h 11min - 132 - #131 Changing Careers
John Young spent most of the last twenty years doing a job he didn't really enjoy. At all. A little over a year ago, he decided to step out of the security, familiarity and predictability of his well-paid career and into the uncertainty of 're-training' in fitness, putting on the 'L plates', starting at the bottom, making way less money and re-inventing himself professionally (as a PT) in his mid-forties. John is listener number four to visit the podcast and in this episode, he and Craig discuss the myriad of challenges and issues that come with changing careers later in life. *Also, Craig shares a story which is possibly the funniest in TYP history.
Tue, 29 Oct 2019 - 1h 04min - 131 - #130 The Guy Who Died for 17 Minutes
Thirteen days before I recorded this chat with the Crab (my training partner, Mark), he died. Well, for seventeen minutes anyway. It happened while we were training and it's fair to say that those seventeen minutes, and all the minutes since, have been interesting. Getting him into the studio was almost as miraculous as his return from the other side. Public speaking is not his favourite thing but nonetheless, he said yes. This episode is not really 'personal development' (although there are lessons and take-aways) but plenty of you asked for it and it's a really interesting conversation. *Note: I apologise for the audio peaks and troughs. The Crab is not as loud as his training partner and despite my coaching, not particularly interested in talking into the mic.
Sun, 27 Oct 2019 - 56min - 130 - #129 Listener Invasion 3
In instalment 3 of our 'come and chat with Harps' series, James travels all the way from Queensland for a little coaching, connecting, coercing and conversing. Among many things, the boys speak about dealing with anxiety, leadership, self-awareness, identity, letting go, business ownership, finding clarity and wanting 'different', while not really knowing what that different might look like.
Thu, 24 Oct 2019 - 1h 23min - 129 - #128 Ageing Disgracefully
Jan and Ian Frazer are funny, inspiring, wise, fit AF and have been married for 52 years. At 79, Jan exercises daily, doing a mix of cardio, strength, stretching and boxing. She also works as a voice-over artist (one of Australia's best) and part-time PT. At 81, Ian mountain-bikes (in the bush, not suburbia), lifts weights (still does 15 full over-hand chin-ups), snow skis and does stand-up paddle-boarding several times a week. They cover plenty in this chat but nothing more amusing than Craig's most embarrassing day at Harper's (his gym)'. Jan was there and it involved a stripper.
Tue, 22 Oct 2019 - 1h 04min - 128 - #127 Neurosurgery for Dummies
Dr. Alex Koefman is one of Australia's youngest Neurosurgeons. He and Craig met at one of Craig's events, got to chatting and decided to continue that chat on TYP. The boys discuss everything from turning a dream into a career, working under extreme pressure, ageing well and neuroplasticity to the value of mentors, starting at the bottom, slowing down, kids playing contact sports and whether or not the spiritual world is 'real'. This is a super interesting conversation.
Sun, 20 Oct 2019 - 1h 34min - 127 - Changing Careers, Downward Dogs, Narcissists and Tree Houses
Lola Berry has had a busy 34 years. Ten books, TV Presenter, Yoga Teacher, Social Media Personality, Reiki Practitioner, Health Science Degree, Nutritionist, a public scandal and a hint of career suicide (according to the media). In this episode of TYP, Craig and Lola discuss everything from dating a narcissist, weekly therapy sessions, back-up careers, changing careers and bad professional decisions, to dealing with keyboard warriors, social media haters, exploring potential, fearlessly failing, Craig's incredible flexibility and Lola's life-long aspiration to live in a tree house.
Tue, 15 Oct 2019 - 1h 07min - 126 - #125 The Listener Invasion (2)
A few weeks ago I wondered (out loud) if any listeners (of The You Project) would like to sit in the number 1 chair and ask me a few questions. I certainly didn't anticipate the response of a hundred plus emails in a few hours! Anyway, instalment 2 is with TYP listener Kelly Smith and she interviews me like a pro!
Sun, 13 Oct 2019 - 1h 19min - 125 - #124 Offensive As F**k
I have about seventy thousand followers across my various platforms. Not many compared to some but enough for feathers to be ruffled and noses put of out of joint regularly. Not a shock considering that each of those seventy thousand individuals has an ego, attitude, beliefs, expectations, biases, likes, dislikes and ideas about what's right and wrong, interesting and boring, funny and rude, offensive and harmless. And as we all know, the same message can be the catalyst for a huge cross-section of reactions, ranging from head-nodding, agreement and laughter to outrage, offence and anger. Which begs the question... what causes offence? FYI, this is an impromptu recording in my office (not studio), so I apologise for the less-than-studio quality production value.
Thu, 10 Oct 2019 - 23min - 124 - #123 Smart Drugs, Andropause, Botox and Beauty Camels
Nima Alavi is back and this time the lads discuss (1) vaping vs. smoking (2) nicotine as a nootropic (smart drug) (3) male menopause (4) regenerative medicine (5) depression and low testosterone (6) the medical applications of botox (7) beauty pageants for camels (really) (8) Nima's fascinating childhood including escaping Iran, being a refugee, being imprisoned and his Baha'i faith. This episode is a smorgasbord of conversation.
Tue, 08 Oct 2019 - 1h 12min - 123 - #122 The Listener Invasion (1)
A few weeks ago I wondered (out loud) if any of my listeners would like to sit in the number 1 chair and ask me a few questions. I certainly didn't anticipate the response of a hundred plus emails in a few hours. I apologise for not getting back to everyone but just because you haven't been contacted, doesn't mean you won't be. I'm thinking about making these a semi-regular thing. Keep in mind that most of these listeners have never been in a studio or spoken into a microphone, so all things considered, they did great. Instalment 1 is with Shelby Hamilton from Warragul (country Victoria) and btw, who knew I have 21 year-old listeners!
Sun, 06 Oct 2019 - 1h 05min - 122 - #121 Managing Our Mind to Manage Our Life

Thu, 03 Oct 2019 - 1h 25min - 121 - #120 Step Prem 2.0

Paul Taylor has a Master's Degree in Exercise Physiology, a Master's in Nutrition, a Post-Grad in Neuroscience and he's currently completing a PhD in Psychology. Apart from that, he's a complete dummy. He's also been one of our most popular guests ever, so at great expense to the management, he's back. This time around, he and Craig continue their conversation exploring the weirdness and wonder of the human condition.
Sun, 29 Sep 2019 - 1h 26min - 119 - #118 The Nonconformist
Tony Mantz (AKA Jack the Bear) has done plenty. Worked with some of the best musicians in the world. Built a successful mastering business. Lived and worked illegally in the States (for years). Overcome a twenty-five year cocaine addiction. Lost 70 kilograms. Covered most of his body in ink. Navigated mental health issues. And spent much of his adult life on a spiritual, philosophical and existential search for meaning, purpose, acceptance, connection and happiness. This is an interesting chat with an interesting man.
Thu, 26 Sep 2019 - 1h 25min - 118 - #117 The Return of the Paleo Warrior
Dietician Vicky Kuriel is back and as always, she pulls no punches. This time Craig and her explore the following topics and questions (1) is cholesterol really bad? (2) should we count calories? Tue, 24 Sep 2019 - 1h 05min - 117 - #116 From Bodybuilding and Bouncing to Ballet and Braids
Michael Ray became a dad for the first time at forty-nine. At fifty-one, the bloke who had worked most of his adult life as a Stripper, Bouncer and Trainer became a full-time single parent, raising his two year-old daughter Charlie on his own. To say he was under-prepared, ill-equipped and overwhelmed, would be something of an understatement. Charlie is now almost eight and it's fair to say that the last six years have been a steep learning curve and a transformative experience for the big softie who has shifted his attention from bodybuilding, barbells and biceps to ballet, braids and buns.
Sun, 22 Sep 2019 - 1h 08min - 116 - #115 Two Metre Peter
Pete Shepherd is back for round two and Craig discovers that his nickname growing up was Two Metre Peter. Both hilarious and awesome. In this chat, the tall one and the old one talk about the upside of imposter syndrome, cultivating empathy, leadership, morning routines, the value of fucking up, Pete's TED Talk experience and magic foods.
Thu, 19 Sep 2019 - 1h 16min - 115 - #114 Two Coaches Walk into a Studio...
Shannah Kennedy and Lyndall Mitchell help people to help themselves. They are both Authors, Teachers, Presenters and Coaches who work mostly in the corporate space and in this chat with Craig, they explore everything from burnout, chronic fatigue, mental health and vision boards to exercising in the rain, choosing our purpose, wrangling teenagers and consciousness. It's quite the conversational fruit salad! Lyndall even takes Craig (and the audience) through a quick anxiety-reducing breathing exercise.

Perhaps most significantly, he is now approaching twenty years clean and sober. In this episode of TYP, Craig talks with Mick about his journey out of the mayhem and into sobriety, sanity and success.
Tue, 10 Sep 2019 - 56min - 111 - #110 A Self-Audit (Part 2)
SELF-AUDITING is a worthwhile, if not always comfortable, component of the personal transformation journey. It is largely about self-awareness and the recognising of habits, patterns, behaviours and choices which can fit anywhere on the scale from toxic and destructive, to positive and life-enhancing. This process is not about self-loathing or over-thinking but rather, self-awareness, self-management and self-determination. It is a strategic, rational and productive exercise, not an emotional or destructive one. In this two-part episode of TYP, Craig walks (talks?) you through some Self-Auditing (type) questions. 10. Do I invest more of my time and energy in problems or solutions? 11. What am I currently avoiding, delaying and/or lying about? 12. What fear is currently holding me back? 13. What is my most limiting belief? 14. Am I living my values? 15. What is my body telling me? 16. What are my overall results telling me? 17. What do I waste energy on? 18. What is the 'me experience' like for others? 19. Are my beliefs, mine? 20. What do I need to put on hold? Or maybe let go of?
Sun, 08 Sep 2019 - 49min - 110 - #109 A Self-Audit (Part 1)
SELF-AUDITING is a worthwhile, if not always comfortable, component of the personal transformation journey. It is largely about self-awareness and the recognising of habits, patterns, behaviours and choices which can fit anywhere on the scale from toxic and destructive, to positive and life-enhancing. This process is not about self-loathing or over-thinking but rather, self-awareness, self-management and self-determination. It is a strategic, rational and productive exercise, not an emotional or destructive one. In this two-part episode of TYP, Craig walks (talks?) you through some Self-Auditing (type) questions. Questions 1. Am I doing what success requires? 2. What will my look like in a year if I stay on my current trajectory? Is that what I want? 3. What do I want more: success or comfort? 4. Based on what I want to do, be, create and change, what needs to be non-negotiable for me? 5. What part of the problem am I? 6. What am I doing well? 7. What am I grateful for? 8. What am I currently doing which is essentially a form of self-sabotage? 9. If 10 (out of 10) is me using all of my potential, what's my current number? 10. Do I invest more of my time and energy in problems or solutions?

Victoria Mitchell is a two-time Australian Olympian (training for a third games) and three-time Commonwealth Games athlete, who has a story much bigger than her obvious sporting talent and achievements. While part of her story revolves around survival, rejection, disconnection and abuse, ultimately (and thankfully), her story is one of potential, possibilities, courage, hope and personal triumph. This is a fascinating conversation.
Sun, 01 Sep 2019 - 1h 10min - 107 - #106 Exploring the Human Condition
This episode is awesome but you might need a pen and notepad as Craig sits down with a legit smarty-pants (Paul Taylor) and they go deep on everything from sociopaths, psychopaths, stoics and vegans to anxiety, addiction, fear, self-regulation, box breathing and the health risks of loneliness. *Also, two-part language warning: (1) there are plenty of 'fucks' and (2) Paul is Irish as-fuck and speaks quickly (in parts).
Thu, 29 Aug 2019 - 1h 00min - 106 - #105 Walking Away From Security
For most of the last twenty-five years, Brad McEwan was a bloke on the telly, keeping Aussies informed about all-things news, current events and sport. Okay, mainly sport. Well, eighteen months ago, the TV bloke chose to step away from the cameras, the public attention, the not inconsiderable wage and the successful media career, to build a different life (both professional and personal) based on kindness, purpose, connection and service. In early 2018, Brad walked away from the security, predictability and comfort of a 'great career' and into the unknown, the unpredictable and the discomfort of being a bloke with a passion, an idea and no job. In this (long) episode, Brad and Craig explore the peaks and troughs, lessons and lightbulbs, pain and pleasure of (1) searching for meaning and purpose (2) creating and living a life aligned with our values (3) stepping into the unknown (4) embracing vulnerability and (5) turning our back on comfort and convenience.

Thu, 22 Aug 2019 - 1h 15min - 104 - #103 Dave Reynolds, V8 Supercar Driver
Bathurst winner, Dave Reynolds has to be one of the most likeable, laid back, freestyle, give zero-fucks, anti-establishment professional athletes in Australia. In fact, it's incredible that a guy who competes under such immense pressure (sponsors, fans, team expectations, driving demands, high speed thrills and spills, extreme in-car temperatures) can be so calm, relaxed and easy-going. Among other things, Dave shares how he (1) lost 6 kilos in a race (2) was fined $25,000 for a comment in a press conference (the biggest ever fine for a driver) (3) hated school (4) doesn't have a plan B (5) hates media training and (6) is starting an anti-road rage campaign after an irate woman assaulted him with her stiletto (really). This is possibly the funniest podcast Craig has done.
Sun, 18 Aug 2019 - 1h 22min - 103 - #102 Eating Disorders, Disordered Eating, Body Dysmorphia, Exercise Obsession and Self-Loathing

This is a conversation that is relevant for many and one that needs to be had more often.
Thu, 15 Aug 2019 - 1h 14min - 102 - #101 Life after Professional Sport
From hero to zero in a week. Or so it seems for some professional athletes who are forced to retire (through age or injury) or are simply, 'no longer required'. Friday: athlete. Monday: unemployed. When your sport has been your complete focus and identity for decades (and your club has been your 'family') and then, in the space of a day you're no longer an athlete or team member, what happens to the human behind the role, the reputation and the identity? In this episode, Craig goes deep with ex-AFL player, Jamie Shanahan (162 games, St. Kilda, Melbourne) exploring this question and some of the relevant issues and challenges.

Thu, 08 Aug 2019 - 1h 11min - 99 - #98 The Struggle is the Gift
Geoff Jowett. What a story. From the high-flying, fast-talking, money-making, money-wasting, drug-taking, reality-avoiding, ego-driven, insecure millionaire entrepreneur... to the broke, broken, depressed, suicidal, anxiety-riddled man-child... to the bloke who found peace, purpose, sobriety, contentment and himself in the things he once avoided; stillness, quiet, reflection, isolation and the company of a few animals. This is a great conversation with a bloke who's had (and continues to have) a fascinating journey.
Tue, 06 Aug 2019 - 1h 17min - 98 - #97 Just Be You
Just be you. Is that not the most over-used self-help cliché ever? And what does it even mean? After all, you're you aren't you? How can you not be? You're one hundred percent you, one hundred percent of the time. There hasn't been one second of your life when you've been someone else. Of course, you can dress, talk and act different(ly) but it's still you. All you. Or is it? Maybe in the changing of thought, emotion and behaviour, you can become 'someone else' or perhaps more accurately, a 'different version of you'. Perhaps 'you' can morph, evolve, transform and perhaps the 'you' of ten years ago, is unrecognisable to the 'you' of today?
Sun, 04 Aug 2019 - 27min - 97 - #96 The Q and A Session
As the title suggests, in this episode Craig answers listener questions, explores a broad range of subject matter and along the way, goes off at a few tangents. As he does. He eventually finds his way back to the topic at hand. If you are sensitive to swearing, this might not be the episode for you.

Oh yeah, and she tells Craig why his much-loved breakfast is not so awesome after all. Further info on Vicky's services can be found at lowcarbchallenge.com.au.

Craig also shares a story about his (one-time-only) experience with a smart drug.
Wed, 24 Jul 2019 - 1h 23min - 93 - #92 Alex the Intern Interviews Craig
This is possibly the deepest, rawest and realest (not a word) Craig has ever gone on the Podcast. It is a teaching, coaching and mentoring session. Alex asks some great questions and Craig freestyles on everything from social media, religion, happiness, critical thinking and dick jokes to behavioural cults, fitting in, insecurity, self-loathing, role models, developing a personal philosophy and some fascinating spiritual stuff. This episode will be a favourite for some.
Mon, 22 Jul 2019 - 1h 13min - 92 - #91 Gavin Crosisca: Football, Addiction, Redemption, Hope
For fourteen years, Gavin Crosisca was simultaneously a professional footballer (in the AFL) and an addict. An addict playing 246 senior games with Collingwood, winning a premiership, using drugs on a daily basis, pretending to be 'normal' and living a lie to his family, friends and team mates. Sadly, his addiction lasted way longer than his football career but these days he's clean and sober and helping others climb out of the hole he inhabited for more than twenty-five years.
Thu, 18 Jul 2019 - 1h 04min - 91 - #90 Sam Wood: The Inconvenient Path

In this fascinating chat about all things health, healing, medicine, big pharma, big lies and agendas, the good Prof. drops some truth bombs, shares his story and passion, dispenses some awesome advice and takes aim at some of the people, organisations and issues standing in the way of a more effective, compassionate and holistic model for health.
Sun, 14 Jul 2019 - 1h 13min - 89 - #88 From Intention to Action

Thu, 11 Jul 2019 - 1h 23min - 88 - #87 How to Think Differently
Our mind is the platform from where we observe, process and give meaning to, the world around us. It is our operational headquarters. It is the window through which we view and understand life and all its magic, mayhem and messy-ness. Our thoughts are the conduit between our external reality and our internal experience, and in this thoughtful episode (pun intended), Craig shares stories, ideas and strategies to help you create a healthier (more positive and productive) cerebral landscape.
Tue, 09 Jul 2019 - 1h 00min - 87 - #86 The Real Superman

Temporary loss of speech, sight and hearing. Paralysis. 72 different medications. Depression. 4 years in hospital. Devastated by a superbug. Given 5% of survival and 0% chance of walking and now he's serving others by walking from Adelaide to Melbourne to raise money for the Black Dog Institute. Fucking Champion. For more info on Terry's mission please visit walkandshine.org.au
Sun, 07 Jul 2019 - 1h 05min - 86 - #85 The River (a Podcast-ette)
This is not so much a podcast as it is, Craig thinking out loud for a few minutes. It's something he thought might resonate with his fellow seekers, searchers, students and works-in-progress. And it's something he hopes will stimulate thought, contemplation, self-awareness and perhaps even a change in thinking, doing and being. Enjoy.
Thu, 04 Jul 2019 - 03min - 85 - #84 Craig Gets Schooled by a Teenager
Craig has finally met his match. She's funnier, cheekier, chattier, smarter and says fuck more than him. She's also nineteen years old. Her name is Ciara Nelson and at the age of sixteen, she was diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumour and given virtually no chance of survival, until she met Neurosurgeon Charlie Teo. Hers is a remarkable story of resilience, courage, love, healing and research (by her mum). Despite the basis of Ciara's story, this is an uplifting and fun podcast. Did I mention she's sweary? (Craig couldn't be prouder).
Tue, 02 Jul 2019 - 51min - 84 - #83 The Guy Who Got Blown Up
John Portelli wasn't expected to live. On December 1, 2017 he was driving a work vehicle with gas bottles in the back. Those gas bottles exploded, tearing the roof of his ute and shattering windows in surrounding houses. So devastating was the event that, when the emergency services arrived, they suspected it had been an act of terrorism. And so extreme were John's injuries that he was given almost zero chance of survival. He was given the last rites and his family were called to say goodbye. In this episode, Craig sits down with John and his wife Jenny, to unpack this incredible story of pain, struggle, survival, possibilities, hope and love.
Sun, 30 Jun 2019 - 1h 07min - 83 - #81 Your Life in One Year
This episode has been stolen from Craig's 'Renovate Your Life' audio program (one of thirty sections) and in it, he talks about the idea of visualising what your life might look, feel and function like a year from now if everything goes to plan (we achieve our goals) and how we might turn that theoretical construct (plan, intention, goal, idea) into a real-world experience and practical outcome.

Depending on your learning style, you might want to listen to this one with a note pad.
Sun, 23 Jun 2019 - 53min - 80 - #79 Craig and his Mum
Getting Mary (who is somewhat private and averse to any kind of limelight) on to TYP is one of Craig's greatest achievements. It's fair to say 'The Old Darl' (as Craig calls her) wasn't excited at the idea but warmed up as they discussed everything from never having a mum (Mary's mum died giving birth), being raised by nuns from the age of four at a boarding school, winning 'Miss Dairymaid' and going on a date with Bert Newton through to Craig's pirate phase, his dubious school years and his unusual punishment for being suspended. Twice. They also talk about love bites (on Craig, not Mary), love languages and Mary's thoughts on ageing well. If you're after a strategic, high-performance, change-your-life (type) of podcast, this might not be for you. But if you're keen to hear a freestyle chat between Craig and his mum around a range of interesting topics, you might love it.
Thu, 20 Jun 2019 - 42min - 79 - #78 The Unconventional Doctor
Doctor Kal Fried (pronounced Freed) is back on TYP sharing his medical wisdom, stories and insights around health, healing and hysteria. He and Craig go even deeper (than last time) on the 'what is pain and how does it work' conversation. For reasons explained during the show, this is a non-swearing episode. You're fucking welcome.
Tue, 18 Jun 2019 - 57min - 78 - #77 Story Time with Harps
In this episode, Craig shares stories from his journey as a fitness industry pioneer. For those of you who don't know, he opened Australia's first Personal Training Centre in 1990, wrote the first PT certification course, employed over five hundred trainers, owned four studios (including the largest in the Southern Hemisphere) and personally facilitated over forty thousand PT sessions. Considering he had almost no understanding of business development, branding, marketing, employing people, administration or leadership when he started, he did okay. Fair to say it was a steep learning curve. Enjoy.

Thu, 06 Jun 2019 - 1h 05min - 73 - #72 The Controversial Pastor
For some people, Pastor Rob Buckingham is not 'Christian enough'. And more than likely, some of those same people will get mad at him for chatting with the bloke who says fuck. Although Craig commits to a non-swearing Podcast at the start, he only lasts ten minutes. There's a shock. The boys talk about Rob's work with Andrew Chan and Myuran Sukumaran (from the 'Bali Nine') leading up to their execution in 2015, the Israel Folau controversy, whether or not Christianity has a PR problem, raising kids and being the spiritual coach to over a thousand people (his congregation). And before anyone runs away, he's definitely not a bible-basher.
Tue, 04 Jun 2019 - 1h 04min - 72 - #71 Helping Others to Help Ourselves

Craig recently chatted with Jarrod L'estrange on 'The Super Dad Show' and because he's essentially lazy, he said to himself... 'self, why don't I put a different label on Jarrod's podcast and call it Episode 70 of TYP and give m'self an hour off?'. Lazy? Resourceful? Time efficient? Who cares? Enjoy.
Thu, 30 May 2019 - 35min - 70 - #69 Damon Hayhow: Fitness Industry Rebel
Damon Hayhow has been a Trailblazer, Lateral Thinker, Challenger of Convention and Shit Stirrer in the Australian Fitness industry for more than a decade. While he challenges the status quo, cuts through the BS and ruffles feathers, he also cares deeply about helping people understand and realise their physical potential. To say he is somewhat direct is like saying the ocean is a bit wet. In this episode of The You Project, he and Craig have a spirited conversation and see eye-to-eye on 'almost' everything.
Tue, 28 May 2019 - 1h 12min - 69 - #68 Craig's 15 Self-Management Rules
In this episode of TYP, Craig talks about the way he manages himself (physically, mentally, emotionally, practically). He doesn't always succeed (of course), so maybe 'intentions' would be a better word than 'rules'.

This episode, Craig sits down with media presenter, author, speaker, sex-pert and highly regarded health commentator, Doctor Sally Cockburn (yes, her real name, pronounced 'Co-burn' and yes, she sees the irony), also know in the media as Dr. Feelgood. Sun, 19 May 2019 - 1h 09min - 65 - #64 Understand You First
This is an unplanned and impromptu mini Podcast that Craig recorded in a moment of inspiration after writing about the impossibility of 'being objective'. It is a brief exploration into the way we process and understand (1) ourselves (2) others and (3) the world around us. If you love 'mind stuff', you'll enjoy this.
Sat, 18 May 2019 - 21min - 64 - #63: Renovate Your Body

Specifically, our mind, emotions, self-talk, choices, behaviours and overall 'operating system'. In this episode, Craig sits down with cancer survivor, leadership coach, endurance cyclist, author and former police inspector, Paul O'Brien. The boys explore everything from passion, purpose and path (as per the title), to insecurity, self-doubt and depression (which Paul has battled for years). It's a great conversation.
Thu, 09 May 2019 - 1h 33min - 60 - #59 with Bianca Chatfield
Champion Netballer, TV Host, 'Block' competitor, Leadership Coach, Corporate Speaker and You Project regular, Bianca is back chatting with Craig about everything from school kids medicating their anxiety, awkwardness around self-promotion and teaching kids how to self-manage (mentally and emotionally) as a school subject, to vulnerability, trust and Bianca's issue with dating men shorter than six-two.
Tue, 07 May 2019 - 1h 06min - 59 - #58 Melissa Makes Craig Cry

Thu, 02 May 2019 - 1h 15min - 57 - #56 Becoming a Life-Long Learner
Craig is a life-long learner. The eternal student. Not the best student, but a committed and enthusiastic one, nonetheless. In this conversation with Dr. Richard Huysmans, the boys discuss Craig's impending PhD. journey and explore the numerous cognitive, emotional and practical benefits of stepping into a structured learning situation, be that a short course to become a barista, a certificate 3 in fitness, a basic book keeping qualification or a million other possibilities, through to something closer to the tertiary (University) end of the scale. Apart from the emotional benefits (self-esteem, confidence, joy, satisfaction), that come with learning, gaining a qualification and successfully navigating any kind of academic journey of any length, at any age, there's also irrefutable evidence telling us that the longer we continue to consciously learn new things, the 'stronger, fitter and healthier' our brain will be into older age.
Tue, 30 Apr 2019 - 1h 00min - 56 - #55 Discomfort Vs. Threshold
What's the differences between being kind-of uncomfortable (but still capable of much more) and working to our absolute threshold? What's actually possible when we push through the self-limiting thinking, the fear, the perceived barriers and our addiction to comfort? In this episode, Craig talks about the difference between 'perception and reality' when it comes to exploring our performance limits. *This brief episode (just over 20 minutes) has been taken from Craig's Renovate Your Life audio program (available via his site).

Apart from representing Australia at 3 Olympic games, being awarded an Order of Australia Medal, working in the media for decades, being on the board of Swimming Australia, raising three kids and running the AFLW, Nicole's life is pretty dull. In this episode, Craig and Nicole explore everything from raising twin sixteen year-olds, being insecure, managing self-doubt, navigating social media and helicopter parenting, to being told you're too fat (as a young athlete), being told you're not 'fresh enough' (for an on-camera media role in your early 40's), to running one of Australia's fastest growing, high profile organisations.

This conversation is equally fascinating, entertaining and terrifying.

At 18, Cameron Schwab was an office boy at Melbourne Football Club and six years later (at 24), he was the CEO of one of Australia's most famous sporting teams; the Richmond Football Club. Cameron's amazing journey saw him at the helm of three AFL clubs (Richmond, Melbourne and Fremantle) for a total of 25 years and in this enthralling conversation, he and Craig explore everything from leadership, experiential learning, emotional intelligence, identity and winning, to purpose, self-management, happiness and the importance of family.
Sun, 14 Apr 2019 - 1h 18min - 49 - #48 The Failure Episode
What is failure? Is it a number? A certain metric? A particular result? Is it the same for everyone or is it different things for different people, depending on their beliefs, thinking, standards, goals and programming? Is it an idea? A label? Is it a story we tell ourselves about certain outcomes? Is it a literal 'thing' (like a brick, chair, hat or tree) or is it more of an individual mental construct? Perhaps it's a meaningful reaction to an otherwise meaningless event. Could the same result (a 'B' on an exam, for example) equal success for one person and failure for another? Perhaps failure is a self-created experience. So many good questions! In this episode, Craig puts on his story-teller cardigan and explores the personal nature of failure through some of his own experiences.
Thu, 11 Apr 2019 - 50min - 48 - #47 Your Relationship with Food
If you're like Craig, then you and food have had an interesting relationship over the years. In this episode, he explores the emotional, irrational, self-destructive, self-sabotaging and let's be honest, stupid shit we do around food. Kal is a Sport's Physician who tells a different story about the way pain should be managed, treated and understood. He believes that much of the current thinking, practice and treatment is flawed and at times, dangerous. This is an enlightening conversation.
Tue, 02 Apr 2019 - 1h 17min - 45 - Episode 44: A Three-Way with Tommy and Josh
Craig recently caught up with Tommy and Josh from the Daily Talk Show in front of a live audience at his Melbourne HQ. The conversation might have gotten a little unruly and loose. Maybe don't have the kids in the car for this episode.

On this episode of TYP, Craig chats with Dr. Richard Huysmans about all things learning, upskilling, research, business development, career change, academia and the trauma of Craig's first semester of University (at 36). The lads explore everything from getting back into study (as an adult) and navigating the terror and confusion of becoming a student (again), through to the many levels of learning from the 'Google Classroom' all the way up to gaining a PhD in something you're passionate about. So inspired was Craig, that (with Richard's guidance) he's thinking about tackling a PhD in Philosophy (his passion), using his work as the basis for his thesis and area of research.
Tue, 26 Mar 2019 - 1h 15min - 43 - Episode 42: 20 Questions for Humans (part 2)
In this episode, Craig intended to explore the remaining Ten questions from his new book. He didn't do it. Mainly because he's super chatty and has no idea of brevity. After some side-tracking and detouring, he manages to navigate his way through four of them: (1) micro and macro reality (2) the slippery-ness of success (3) people-pleasing and (4) listening to our body. Enjoy.

Wed, 13 Mar 2019 - 49min - 41 - EPISODE 40(b): Stepping into Your Power and Potential (a brief coaching session)
This is more of a Podcast-ette. Towards the end of a podcast a few weeks ago, I soap-boxed the f**k out of everyone with a ten-minute impromptu, evangelical monologue about stepping into your power, potential and possibilities. Well, it seemed to resonate with more than a few people, including Jo Quested (a follower), who shared that she made her husband and three sons listen to my pep-talk over dinner last night. Sorry lads. Anyway, I've decided to publish it as a stand-alone recording, in the hope that someone who needs to hear it, will. Love you to share it. Thanks.

Sometimes, she pulls it off.
Tue, 05 Mar 2019 - 1h 03min - 38 - Episode 38 with Danny Frawley
This is a fascinating chat about the dichotomy of a high profile person's internal and external realities; the internal sh*t-fest in the middle of an external success story. The boys cover everything from Danny's coaching and playing days, to his media work, the Essendon drug scandal (when he was CEO of the AFL Coaches Association), spud farming, bullying, his nervous breakdown, eighteen months of severe depression and darkness and his subsequent journey into self-awareness, slowing down, healing and happiness.

Tue, 26 Feb 2019 - 57min - 36 - Episode 36: Avoiding the Cracks, Tapping the Wall, Lucky Numbers and Checking the Locks (again)
This time on TYP, TV Presenter, Journalist and trainee Podcaster, Brad McEwan, swaps places with Craig, with Brad hosting and Craig occupying the guest chair. For the first half of the show, the boys discuss the value of story-telling as a tool for teaching, coaching, creating connection and sharing important messages. Along the way, the conversation turns to mental and emotional health, with the last half hour (or so) of the show being absolutely fascinating. In it, both Brad and Melissa (who produces the podcast) reveal their life-long challenges with severe OCD (Obsessive Compulsive Disorder) and how they both still manage and navigate life with, what can be, a debilitating mental health issue. Curiously, Brad and Melissa only learned about each other's (almost identical) condition during the recording of the Podcast.
Thu, 21 Feb 2019 - 1h 07min - 35 - Episode 35: WTF is Preventative Nutrition?
Bacon will kill you. Well, kind of. Maybe. This podcast was a sad moment for Craig the bacon lover, who discovered that one of his favourite meats could kill him! As could ham, salami and many other processed meats, which are all classified as Class 1 carcinogens (bad!) by the World Health Organisation. Good grief. Apart from this depressing news, Elise and Lauren from Oncore Nutrition also educate Craig about optimal pooing strategies, paleo, intermittent fasting, good and bad fats, glycemic index vs. glycemic load, good and bad calories (nutritional value), which bread to buy, alcohol and on a more serious note, eating to prevent cancer. Note: the food discussion can be a Pandora's box of theories, bro-science, emotion, interpretation and of course, legitimate science, research and evidence. Keep in mind that this episode is a conversation in a studio and in no way, a prescription or personal recommendation.
Tue, 19 Feb 2019 - 1h 19min - 34 - Episode 34: Cutting Through the Bullshit
Haters, Saboteurs, Self Doubt and Wasted Potential. What started out as a simple Q and A, turned into a high intensity inspiration session as Craig whipped himself into a coaching frenzy! If you're after a self-help cuddle, don't listen to this. If you're sick and tired of fucking around, tune in.
Fri, 15 Feb 2019 - 53min - 33 - Episode 33 Over-Thinking, Anxiety, Depression, Vulnerability and Catastrophising.
Let me say up front that this conversation is way more fun than it sounds! A week or so back, I was on a new podcast called 'The Mental Health Project' with a bloke called Tristan Simmons and I've decided to share our chat here because I think there's value in it for my audience. I knock back most Podcast offers (for time reasons) but knew a little about Tristan, so wanted to support his foray into the space. He has a history of mental health challenges and this Podcast is part of his own healing and a way of connecting with others dealing with similar issues. I loved this chat. BTW, if you enjoy 'The You Project' please tell your friends. And if you haven't subscribed yet, hurry up!
Tue, 12 Feb 2019 - 51min - 32 - Episode 32 Addiction, Destruction and Redemption

At 28, he's been clean for seven years and in this episode of The You Project, Craig and Jack explore some of his fascinating experiences, stories and insights.

Thu, 24 Jan 2019 - 42min - 28 - Episode 28 with 'The Daily Talk Show'
Craig recently caught up with the boys from the Daily Talk Show (Josh and Tommy) on their Podcast and as always, it was a verbal fruit salad of everything from psyllium husk protocol, to how 'Whiteboard Lessons' became a thing, to hobbies and side hustles, to his new book, to his take on social media, to the meaning of life... and as always, they had fun. Obviously, this is a 'shared' podcast (thanks lads).
Thu, 17 Jan 2019 - 1h 09min - 27 - Episode 27 with Brad and Carly Cunningham
In this Episode, Craig chat's with young entrepreneurs Brad and Carly Cunningham, who at the ripe of old age of twenty-something, have seen more, done more and learned more than many people twice their age. Three kids, one marriage, multiple businesses (good and bad), breakdowns and breakthroughs, a failed partnership, eviction notices and a myriad of lessons in business, brand, customer service, judgement, timing, awareness, failure, success and of course, life. It was an interesting conversation.
Fri, 11 Jan 2019 - 48min - 26 - Episode 26 with Brad McEwan
For nearly twenty years, Craig saw Brad McEwan most days. On his lounge room wall. Specifically, the television on his lounge room wall. Informing him about the goings-on in the world of sport. As one of Australia's most laconic, likeable and listenable journalists and presenters, Brad has been a fixture of Australia's sporting media landscape. Which makes his decision to walk away from it all (while still a 'required' employee) to explore something totally different, a very interesting conversation. At forty-seven years young, he's exploring his purpose, passion and path and is totally committed to helping others do the same. The boys had a great chat about all things personal growth, happiness, passion, health and life. Enjoy.

Thu, 06 Dec 2018 - 56min - 23 - Episode 23 COACHING SESSION: Managing You
Managing You: Looking for Process, Meaning, Purpose, Alignment and Happiness. This episode is a little different. Over the last month I've been recording an audio program (which will go on sale soon). This episode is a section of the program that I won't be using because there's too much overlap (repetition) with some other sections. This is the raw audio without the polished editing, so you'll hear some occasional breathing, sniffles, pauses and other normal human stuff. Nonetheless, I think you'll find it valuable. Perhaps listen to it with a pen and paper as I ask some questions. Enjoy, Craig.
Thu, 29 Nov 2018 - 41min - 22 - Episode 22 with Big Media Company

Thu, 18 Oct 2018 - 1h 05min - 17 - Episode 17 A Free Coaching Session!
My intention with this Podcast was to share from my last book and freestyle around it a little. I say, intention. What actually happened, once the mic was on, was that I broke into a spontaneous coaching session covering everything from motivation, mindset, decision-making and the messy-ness of life to the inevitability of discomfort, doing the work, why knowledge is not the answer and my personal hatred of stretching. If you're in need of a gentle kick, I think you'll enjoy this.
