ON this week’s episode I sat down with Nurse practitioner damian valle to talk about a case of septic arthritis. Damo is a nurse pract with a love for teaching and training. The case is an excellent example of why getting a clinical history is important and why reassessment is always so important. Situational Awareness is something that all Paramedics, Nurses and Doctors need to use on a daily basis. On this weeks episode I sat down with Clinical Nurse Consultant Daniel Van Vorst to discuss the MTP (massive transfusion protocol). Expecting the unexpected is the name of the game in emergency work. On this episode I sat down after a fresh case with Dr Bec to chat about how to deliver a baby safely in an Emergency Department. On this episode I sat down with Dr John Mackenzie and discussed the complexities of hyperbaric medicine. Restart the heart, is exactly what Intensive Care Paramedics, Jeni and Harry are trained to do. However generally they are not expected to do it on their fellow paramedics. Chest decompressions in the dark, surgical airways with night vision goggles- a few of the things that Dr Dan Pronk has had to do whilst operating as a Special Operations Doctor in the military. This episode will leave you in awe for not only the people in the military but for all emergency services working under pressurised situations. Dan served the majority of his military career within Special Operations Units, including four tours of Afghanistan and over 100 combat missions. Dan was awarded the Commendation for Distinguished Service for his conduct in action on his second tour of Afghanistan. Benny's role is based in the community, acute psychiatric ward and the emergency department. On this Episode i sat down and talked to ED staff specialist Dr Todd Steggles about how to interpret Normal and Abnormal Chest X-rays. Todd talked us through his approach to reading CXR's and gave some helpful tips for all listeners. On the episode we discussed abnormal X-ray findings within four main pathologies, pneumonia, pulmonary odema, pleural effusions and a pneumothorax. Todd also opened up about life as an ED consultant , communication issues and just how he personally copes with the stressors of such a high impact job. Todd also spoke about the importance of a debrief and learning from everyone, not just your superiors. This episode I sat down with Pat, a paramedic named Irwin and Geraldine (Pat's wife) to discuss the traumatic events of Valentines Day 2016. The three of them retold their experiences, emotions and challenges when Pat was hit by a car whilst riding his pushbike on the south coast of NSW Australia.  Irwin (paramedic and friend) talks about being emotionally invested in a job and what we can learn as emergency clinicians.  Geraldine (Positive pants) retold her story from the moment she received the phone call about the accident to what it is like to see a loved one suffer. Her motivation, determination and willingness to remain positive are evident  throughout this episode.  Finally, Pat talked about his recollection of events from the ride to waking up in an intensive care unit with multiple injuries and a breathing tube down his throat. This week I sat down with Chelsea and Laura about their transition from nursing students to new graduate nurses. Both secured a position in a competitive environment and started their first rotation in emergency in 2021. This week I travelled to one of the busiest emergency departments in the state, where I chatted to emergency consultant Daniel Gaetani. Daniel is an emergency doctor with a love for toxicology and all things ultrasound. This week I traveled to Prince of Wales hospital and sat down at one of the biggest genomics/genetics laboratories in the country to talk to Rebecca. Dr Rebecca Walsh is a scientist, hematologist and genomisist (only a few of her titles!). Within the episode we discussed sickle cell crisis and what every ED staffer needs to know.
