- 72 - MTP071 - The Saga Of Erik the Red
The Saga of Erik the Red
by
Unknown; Translated by Arthur Middleton Reeves (1856 - 1891)The Saga of Erik the Red is one of the two important 13th century accounts of the Norse explorations of Greenland and North America, along with The Saga of the Greenlanders.
Containing fantastic anecdotes about ghostly visitations, wise women-seers, and one-legged native Unipeds, the saga is just as fascinating for what is clearly authentic history. It vividly relates the conflict between Christianity and the old Norse religion; the significant place of extraordinary women in Icelandic and Greenland culture; the frequent incursions of the Norsemen into Ireland and Scotland, lands really not at all far from the centers of Norse activity; and first contact with the native inhabitants of the Dawnlands of northeastern North America.
Most absorbing are the clear embodiment of real human personalities in this historical saga: Leif Erikson and his lover, the renownedly intelligent Thorgunna who boldly renounced social convention; Gudrid the daughter of Thorbiorn, beautiful and of strong and influential character; Thioldhild, the wife of Erik the Red, who refused to have sex with him so long as he resisted Christianity; Thorbiorg, the eldritch “Little Sibyl,” who dispensed prophecies to the settlers of Greenland; and Thorhall, the fey, untameable hunter, who held fast to his god Thor the Red-Bearded even when it meant being severed from human society.

Sir Arthur Conan DoyleBy 1348 the House of Loring has fallen on hard times. Together, the Black Death and the greedy monks of Waverley have bled away all of the Loring wealth. Even the manor house will have to go to pay their debts.
Then a chance encounter with the King of England provides Nigel, the last of the Lorings, with the chance to seek his fortune in the constant wars with France.
But more importantly for Nigel it also means that he may be able to do the "three small deeds" that will show he is worthy to ask for the hand of the Lady Mary in marriage.

Mark TwainHank and Arthur stay with the women until she dies as well. When they hear someone approaching they hide behind the hut. It's the women's three sons, they escaped from prison and returned home.
Arthur wants to capture them and return them to the lord but a great fire in the distance catches their attention. As they make their way toward the fire they see men hanging from trees in the woods.
Hank and Arthur find shelter with a local couple, Marco and Phyllis, and discover the lord was murdered and his manor set on fire. Arthur is convinced it is the three boys from the small pox hut. Hank says he will tell Marco where to find the boys. Once they are alone Marco tells him he only participated in the events so he didn't fall under suspicion.
Hank and Marco make their way into the village and Hanks invites the local blacksmith, Dowley and others to Marco's for dinner. Hank says he will pay for it all and even buy Marco and his wife new clothes for the occasion.
The meal is served, and Hank makes a big show of paying for the entire meal. After the meal Arthur takes a nap and Hank talks to the guests about their wages, free-trade and the economics of Camelot.
Hank continues to talk about wages and unions of the future. Then he goes too far an insults the blacksmith.
What will happen to Hank? Will Dowley the Blacksmith retaliate? Will King Arthur be discovered?

Mark TwainLast time we saw Hank he was holding court with King Arthur. Hank shared with Arthur the idea of disguising himself as a freeman to get a feel for the common people. King Arthur loved the idea and asked to join.
Before they could leave Arthur needed to finish a few Kingly duties. While Hank is waiting he buys a newspaper, one that he invented and reads the account of the miracle at the fountain to the monks.
Disguised as commoners Hank and King Arthur set out. As they travel King Arthur finds it difficult to humble himself before other nobles. It doesn’t take long before he forgets his disguise and starts cursing and yelling at passing knights. Hank intervenes by throwing his dynamite torpedo at the knights, killing them and their horses.
After the incident Hank decides to take time and train Arthur how to act like a commoner. Hank thinks Arthur is ready and they approach a nearby hut. Inside the hut is a women dying of smallpox. She tells Hank and King Arthur how she was banned from the church and how her family ended up in this situation.
As she finishes her story her last daughter dies in her arms.
Well King Arthur so sympathy to the women? Will her story change the way he rules Camelot?

Mark TwainOn the last episode Hank is awaiting his execution when he is informed it’s been moved up a day. Clarence was wrong the date and while they are tying Hank to the stake the eclipse begins. King Arthur begs him to spare the sun and Hank agrees only if Arthur make him the chief advisor.
Hank performs another magical feat when he orders lightning to hit the Merlin’s tower. Everyone is in awe and Merlin loses all his control over the kingdom.
Hank set out to modernize Camelot and over a number of years set up a newspaper, telegraph lines, and established military academies.
What will Hank do next? Will be go on a quest to gain credibility in Camelot?Speaking of eclipses... Did you know there’s solar eclipse this year in North America? 08 Apr 2024, the path of totality stretches from Durango, Mexico up through Texas, Arkansas, Southern Illinois, Ohio, New York, Toronto, Montreal and making it’s way over New Brunswick before leaving North America.
If you live in the path of totality be sure to get outside on 08 Apr and see the eclipse. It’s an incredible experience. Just don’t look at the sun directly, it’s bad for your eyes.
If you live in Ireland, Wales or Southwest England you will see about a 85% eclipse about an hour or so before sunset.

by
Mark TwainAfter getting into an argument at work and hit in the head with a crowbar Hank Morgan is whisked back in time to Camelot, King Arthur and the Knights of the Round table. Never start a fight with a guy named Hercules!
Hank wakes up and thinks he’s in an asylum called Camelot but soon discovers he is in the year 528. As the prisoner of Sir Kay, Hnak witnesses King Arthur and his Knights. He also meets Merlin who tells the tale of how King Arthur received his mighty sword.
After Sir Kay tells how he captured Hank, Hank is striped and sent to the dungeon to await his execution the next day.
Hank, remembering there was an eclipse in 528, claims he is a great magician and he will blot out the sun at the time of his execution.
What’s in store for Hank? Will he be executed? Or will the eclipse convince them he is a great and powerful magician?

We’re on to a new book and it’s the time traveling adventure,
A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur’s Court
by
Mark TwainIn the 19th century, engineer Hank Morgan receives a blow to the head and is transported back in time to the time of King Arthur and his knights of the round table. Hank uses his knowledge and sets himself up as a rival to Merlin. Will he modernize Camelot and change the course of history?
I first read this book in 7th or 8th grade and loved it. The idea of traveling back in time and keeping all your modern knowledge is enticing. Knowing your history you’d be seen as a god or prophet foretelling the future. Or maybe you’d overstep and be burned at the stake as an evil witch. It’s a fine line between saint and sinner.
If you were thrown back to the Middle Ages what would you do? Would you use your knowledge to change history? I bet the biggest obstacle is the language barrier. Start brushing up on your Latin and Old English.
Grab a cup of mead, find a cozy spot to sit and enjoy the first part of A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur’s Court.

Beowulf

Beowulf is an epic poem originally written in Old English (also called Anglo-Saxon) about a Scandinavian prince named Beowulf. It was written somewhere between the seventh and tenth centuries by an unknown author. Though the specific characters and plot are mostly fictional, the poem paints a historical picture of sixth-century Scandinavia.
Beowulf focuses on the his adventures and victories. Beowulf battles a humanoid demon named Grendel, then against Grendel’s vengeful mother, and lastly against a fearsome dragon.

💔The Romance of Tristan and Iseult💔
by
Joseph Bedier"The Romance of Tristan and Iseult" is a medieval chivalric romance from the 12th century. It is a tragedy about the forbidden love between the Cornish knight Tristan and the Irish princess Iseult. Tristan's heroic exploits win Iseult as a bride for his uncle, King Mark. However, during their sea voyage to Mark's kingdom, Tristan and Iseult unknowingly drink a love potion that arouses their passion for each other and raises irresistible challenges to their loyalty and honor.
The story is a rich mosaic of the human experience, embroidered with colorful gothic elements like spell-weaving dwarves, love potions, magical bells, and even a monstrous dragon. The Romance of Tristan and Iseult is rooted in Celtic legend and French poetry.
