As we navigate the complexities of the workplace, it's essential to foster an environment where every mind is valued for its unique contributions. This episode introduces Dr Ian Iceton, a neurodiversity advocate with a rich HR background and personal ties to the topic. We delve into the importance of language, the evolving understanding of conditions like autism and ADHD, and the role of inclusive communication in developing a supportive corporate culture.
Our discussion with Ian extends beyond mere awareness; we confront the misconceptions that can arise when neurodivergent behaviours are misinterpreted, stressing the need for education and sensitivity towards differences in communication and sensory experiences. We illuminate the unique ways in which neurodivergent individuals may express and perceive emotions, offering insights for managers and colleagues to build truly inclusive teams.
Finally, we celebrate the diverse ways in which we learn and work, acknowledging that what might seem unconventional can be tremendously effective. We champion the idea that embracing cognitive diversity is not only beneficial for neurodivergent individuals but also enriches the entire team. Our conversation with Dr Iceton concludes with actionable advice and resources for those seeking to support neurodiversity in their organisations, ensuring that every employee, regardless of how their brain is wired, has the opportunity to thrive.

With January being the month of tightening our financial belts we are looking at the concept of sunk cost and why we submit to the bias of sunk cost and throw good money after bad? The sunk cost fallacy is a cognitive bias that occurs when people continue to invest in a decision or project based on the resources (time, money, or effort) they have already put into it, despite the evidence suggesting that these investments are no longer rational or beneficial. Why do we do this and how can we stop? Our neuroscience research has the answers.

Most employees need to feel like they belong to the team in which they work in order to be fully motivated and engaged. Belonging is the feeling of being accepted and respected in a team or organisation and is created by having inclusive work environments. When we belong we feel connected to colleagues, there is the right work life balance, and our values are lived at at work.
The feeling of belonging in a workplace is more important than we would think. In fact research has shown that the extent to which we belong significantly contributes to improving our productivity and morale within a team or organisation. In this episode, Senior Psychologist Caitlin Cooper and Dr Amanda Potter the Chief Psychology Officer explore the concept of belonging and how organisations and teams can improve the feeling of belonging for each of the people in their team.

For many years a large proportion of global organisations have been using the 360/multi-rater approach to giving feedback for coaching, development and learning. But how effective are they? What does an effective 360 look like? When should we be applying qualitative or quantitative 360s? In this podcast Caitlin and Amanda look at the science behind robust and valid 360 measures and how they should be effectively applied. They also look at the risks of misusing 360 instruments and some of the mistakes organisations make embarking on 360 programmes. Finally they close with the benefit of 360s to help build the business case with key stakeholders.

Today we are talking about succession planning, it's importance for organisational success and the role it plays in individual development and talent planning. We will look at good and bad practice and some of the key success factors. Succession planning is a crucial tool for managing and retaining top talent especially in private organisations where it is more commonly practised. However, there is often a lack of consistent workforce planning and many public and non-profit organisations still overlook the importance of succession planning with some preferring to hire experienced external workers over internal incumbents to fill vacant positions. In this podcast, our Chief Psychology Officer Dr Amanda Potter is being interviewed by Kristian Lees-Bell.

What does it mean to have Self-Compassion, why is it important? How can we practice self-compassion and what is the impact of this on how we interact and engage with family, friends and colleagues? We look at the research from the most prolific self-compassion author Dr Kristin Neff and her look at Fierce and Tender Self-Compassion and the role of each for helping us to extend compassion and understanding towards oneself in times of suffering or perceived failure, rather than harsh self-criticism or judgment. Why are some people self-critical or prone to self-pity, and how can we help them to move towards having more constructive, kind, yet challenging self-talk?

What is Executive Presence and how is it different from being Inspirational as a leader? For many years clients have asked our executive coaches to help their leaders with their presence and impact, and to have more gravitas. However, Executive Presence is a bit like the dark science of leadership and it eludes many leaders who want to have presence and make a positive impact but they do not know how. Zircon therefore conducted research with nearly 200 leaders to understand the concept of Executive Presence and how we can help leaders communicate with more impact, gravitas and dynamism. In this episode, Angela interviews Amanda to understand the research and to give some real examples of how coaching clients have developed their executive presence.

The role of the CEO has changed drastically in the past 20 years, and our expectations of them has both increased and changed. Since the 1990s the median tenure of CEOs has shortened to 10 to 5 years, and "it has become challenging for a CEO to advocate, motivate and embed their strategic direction in this reduced time frame". In this episode Kristian Lees-Bell and Dr Amanda Potter interview our guest the Author and Psychologist Dr. Sylvana Storey to understand the changing role of the CEO and what they can do to drive future success.

Self-limiting beliefs have the potential to negatively impact our lives. They can hold us back and prompt us to make fear-based decisions, which can at times, lead to the very same painful experiences they have been created to help us avoid. If we do not take action and challenge these beliefs, we can stay stuck in the damaging cycle. It is important to create empowering beliefs which help us to move forward and accomplish everything we set our mind to achieve.
This podcast episode takes a deep dive into self-limiting beliefs, looking at where they come from, why they stick around, the neuroscientific perspective, and a number of strategies to help stop these beliefs from controlling your life. We also discuss how we can turn these self-limiting beliefs into liberating beliefs (thank you Matthew Benjamin AKA Bushwacka for the concept to research).

The Covid Pandemic has been the biggest global stress event since WW2 and has encouraged us as business leaders and HR managers to have a greater focus than ever on the mental health and wellbeing of our people. In this podcast we explore hybrid working, the research behind creating successful and happy hybrid workforces, and how we can get the best out of our people to drive individual and organisational success. We know that to retain and motivate a happy and healthy workforce is critical for success because people thrive when the environment is right for them. We also look at the link between hybrid working and psychological safety and how neuroscience plays a part in helping people to feel happy, healthy and well when working from home.

Increasingly we are hearing about organisations considering their social responsibility, or sustainability, to achieve this they consider their ESG rating. But what is it? In this episode, we have a guest James Lewry, Director of Social Risks who is an expert in ESG. James has been working for the past 20 years for Control Risks and is responsible for their (Environmental, Social, Governance) strategic framework. With organisations such as Enron or the Lehman Brothers being found guilty of unethical practices such as fraud and contributing to the economic crisis of 2008, ESG seems to be a reactionary result to the ever-changing world and the need for increased social responsibility and sustainability. Attitudes and standards across all sectors of society have to be met at all three levels to survive. What does ESG offer and how does Psychology help? In this episode, James and Amanda are being interviewed by Tim.

Research suggests that there are many characteristics that contribute to an individual making it to the top of their sport or industry. Less information exists however about the critical elements that make the real difference and catapult people to the dizzy heights of the Olympics, Global Business or West End success. Here, success means a person being at the top of their game, achieving significant results and being championed by others as a Winner; a success that others only aspire to achieve. As a result, this research works to understand the ingredients that make up a ‘Winning Attitude’. In this episode, our very own Chief Psychology Officer Dr. Amanda Potter is being interviewed by Angela Malik.

After decades of using personality tools to support assessment for recruitment, succession, development and coaching, in this podcast we are debating the pros and cons of a personality versus strengths approach to assessment. We look at the various personality questionnaires developed since the work of Eysenck, Cattell and Jung, and the role personality has played in helping us understand individual differences. We then look at the move away from personality towards strengths and the benefit of taking a strengths versus personality approach. Finally we look at emotional intelligence, and the state - trait continuum.
In this episode, the Chief Psychology Officer, Dr Amanda Potter, is being interviewed by Angela Malik. The Chief Psychology Officer episodes are available here https://www.thecpo.co.uk/

Joe Wicks MBE is loved by millions for his unrelenting focus on helping families get healthier and happier. Recently awarded an Honorary Doctorate from St Mary's University, the raw passion and humility in Joe's acceptance speech prompted us to invite him to be a guest on our podcast.
In this episode, Joe tells his story of how with persistence and resilience he went from being labelled the ‘naughty kid’ to becoming a household name.
We discuss the opportunity leaders and colleagues have in working with purpose and not writing people off because of their circumstances or start in life. We link it back to psychology, cognitive diversity, resilience through well-being and strengths.
Before recording this episode, Joe had recently completed a walkathon for Children in Need. If you would like to join Zircon in supporting this worthy cause, please donate by visiting: https://donate.bbcchildreninneed.co.uk/walk

Radical Candour (Candor) can be used to help facilitate courageous conversations, give difficult feedback and create an environment of trust and psychological safety. It is a management philosophy, originally coined by Kim Scott built on the concept of how to give feedback constructively by challenging directly, whilst also caring personally.
As a boss, leader, or aspiring professional, Radical Candour is a relationship-building tool that can be used to help navigate feedback conversations so that they are more effective. In this podcast we give real examples of where Radical Candour has worked, and what happens when it is lacking. We also explore the link between Radical Candour and psychological safety, and how to give feedback and deal with particularly strong or dominant personalities within an organisation. In this episode, Amanda is being interviewed by Angela to explore the concept of Radical Candour.

We have probably all heard the well used phrase from Peter Drucker that "Culture eats Strategy for Breakfast", this podcast looks at the importance of culture for success, and the question of whether we should be assessing talent for cultural fit or cultural agility and what is the impact of assessing for cultural fit or values fit on diversity?
The term culture fit has been an increasingly contentious subject in talent assessment, however there has been a move towards culture agility for assessment for recruitment in recent years. In this episode, Amanda is being interviewed by Angela Malik to understand, what is cultural agility, why is it important, and how can we bring in recruitment practices to enable organisations to be more cognitively diverse and culturally agile?

Most large organisations fail before they succeed, and the small failures are early warning signs that change is needed. All of our research is showing that to succeed in business as entrepreneurs and leaders in industry we must redefine failure. We need to get better at failing. We need to understand it, learn from it and share what we have learnt. This podcast summarises our research into failure and the link with Psychological Safety, Resilience, Wellbeing, Impostor Syndrome and Belief.
The episode also looks at the neuroscience behind the importance of errors and failure, and the importance of errors to prime the central nervous system to learn, and how frustration plays such an important part in creating our awareness that something needs to change. It will examine from a psychology perspective, why don’t we learn failure and why we actively try to avoid it.
Finally we share some tips to recommend how we can overcome our reluctance to face up to failure so that we embed the motivation to keep trying and learn from our mistakes.
In this episode, Amanda is being interviewed by Tim Hepworth.
