The History of Turpin Custom Game Calls with Steve Turpin This week, Steve Turpin with Turpin Custom Game Calls joins Cameron and Andy to talk about the history of his great uncle, Tom Turpin, and his great uncle's call company named Turpin Custom Game Calls, which Steve runs today. Steve shares the audio of an 80 year old box call that his great uncle built and Steve recently acquired. Wild Turkey Science with the Wild Turkey Science Podcast Guys  Cameron and Andy interview Drs. Will Gulsby and Marcus Lashley in this week's episode. Will and Marcus discuss their new podcast called Wild Turkey Science where they will discuss, you guessed it... the science of the wild turkey. In this episode, Will and Marcus discuss some of the show topics and guests they have had on already. Traveling and Turkey Hunting with Cameron and Andy This week Cameron and Andy close out the Traveling and Turkey Hunting series of episodes while sharing some of their own tips and strategies for traveling to turkey hunt. They cover camping, driving, and flying to their hunting destinations. Cameron shares a great tip about breaking up a long drive to include a hunt in a state about half way between your home and your ultimate destination. Another Piney Hills Turkey Hunt This week, Scott McDonald joins Cameron and Andy on the show to share a turkey hunt he had with Andy in the spring of 2022. This hunt took place on some thick public ground in a tough southern state, but it turned out to be a productive trip for both Scott and Andy as they doubled on a couple of hard gobbling turkeys right around midday. These birds came through the thick woods, split up, and eventually got back together about 45 yards in front of Scott and Andy. It took a lot of patience and trust in their hunting partner to make this hunt a success, but it all paid off as it turned out to be twice as successful as they had hoped. This is a great hunt that will get you fired up for spring. Listen in!

The 2023 Unicoi Custom Callmakers Show Preview with Mark Sharpe This week, Mark Sharpe joins Cameron and Andy to talk about the upcoming 2023 Unicoi Custom Turkey Callmakers Show held at Unicoi State Park in Georgia. This year the show will be held January 13 and 14 of 2023. This show features custom turkey call makers displaying and selling their calls as well as seminars by call collectors and call makers as well. This is one of the premier turkey caller shows in the country, and the event is a fantastic time to immerse yourself in turkey hunting with other turkey hunting nuts to prepare for the upcoming spring turkey hunting season. A Waterlogged Turkey Cameron shares another turkey hunt with us this week to get us primed and ready to eat some Thanksgiving turkey. This hunt took place in what is a very common habitat for many of us hunters east of the Mississippi River. This was in a hardwood bottom that, at the time, was flooded. Cameron found some gobbling turkeys in the area. After sloshing through the water to get to them, he setup, called, and soon had his hat blown off by a loud gobbling Eastern wild turkey. The gobbling in this hunt will get your blood boiling and get you wishing for springtime again. Listen in!

Wild Turkey Updates with Dr. Will Gulsby Dr. Will Gulsby from Auburn University joins Cameron and Andy on the show to update all of us on the progress and the one year findings on the ongoing studies being conducted at by his department. We discuss the male wild turkey gonad study and some of the preliminary results there. We also discuss the gobbling chronology study being done within the state of Alabama, and the very interesting early findings from one year of that study. Creating Better Brood Habitat with Marcus Lashley This week, Cameron and Andy share part of the Alabama NWTF Field Day seminar where Dr. Marcus Lashley talks about brood habitat. The general theme of Dr. Lashley's seminar is that as a whole brood habitat is severely lacking across the US. We all already know that having great nesting habitat is essential to having good hatches, but creating great nesting habitat is extremely difficult to do because there is not one particular habitat that hens are likely to nest in.  According to Dr. Lashley better brood habitat is much easier to create because it has several features that are commonly found in the different areas around the US. This is an excellent presentation, and we have part 1 of 2 for you this week. There is definitely something to be learned by all of us from this week's show and next week's show. Listen in!

A Heaping Helping of Fall Turkey Soup This week, Cameron and Andy share some wild turkey news. In this week's episode, Cameron and Andy discuss recent news about an encouraging wild turkey and poult survey in Arkansas, as well as a positive wild turkey and poult report completed in Tennessee. Also, the NWTF has announced this year's inductees into their Hall of Fame. Other states featured on this week's turkey soup episode are Maine, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Maryland, and Missouri. A story of a wild turkey breaking into a home in Ohio may be the story that takes the cake in this week's episode. Trapping and Predator Control for Better Wild Turkey Hatches  This week, Cameron and Andy share some of their tips for trapping and predator calling to lower predator populations and have better wild turkey hatches each year. The Honey Hole Hunt This week, Cameron shares another hunt from this past season with us where he killed another turkey from the same ridge that has been good to him over the past several seasons. This is an early season hunt that took place in some hilly hardwood country with a hard gobbling Eastern wild turkey. Most of you know that Mike is a wild turkey biologist with the University of Georgia, and his students are spearheading quite a few studies on wild turkeys. In addition to his full time job of managing his students and grad students, Mike is a turkey hunter. Most of the podcasts and seminars Mike has been on are purely about the biology of the wild turkey, but this week Mike joins the show to discuss some tactics he uses to hunt wild turkeys during the late season. Mike's vast knowledge of the bird itself gives him a different take on hunting turkeys during the early, mid, and late parts of the season. A Hardwod Hills Turkey Hunt This week Cameron shares one of his 2022 spring turkey hunts with us. This is a hunt that took place pretty early in the spring out of state in the hardwood hills.  Cameron was nearing the end of the time he allotted for himself to hunt that particular morning, and he struck a tom while running and gunning. With a little strategy he was able to seal the deal and put some meat in the freezer. Also, in this episode, Cameron shares a story of his Osceola hunt this spring that involved a gun malfunction. Talking Turkeys and Life with The Critter Gitter This week, Cameron and Andy have Braedan Henagar, aka The Critter Gitter, on the show to talk about turkeys and turkey hunting. Braedan is a 16 year old young man who lives in Ohio and is absolutely gung ho on all types of hunting. Braedan's favorite animal to hunt is, of course, wild turkeys. Scott McDonald Marks Off a New State This week, our friend and fellow turkey hunting addict, Scott McDonald, joins Cameron and Andy to share a hunt he had last season in a state he needed to continue his quest to finish the US Super Slam. This is a very cool hunt with a very vocal and hard gobbling wild turkey. After the hunt, Scott learned he was not the only person who showed up at this piece of property that morning to hunt this turkey.  Listen in to this awesome hunt.

Trumpets and Turkey Talk with Mark Prudhomme This week, Cameron has Daddy Duty, so we have a very special co-host on the show, Ms. Josie Weddington. Cameron, Andy, and Josie are joined on the show by World Champion and Grand National Champion caller Mark Prudhomme. Mark is not only a champion turkey caller, but he is also a champion duck, goose, predator, and owl caller (as well as some other critters). Mark shares some of how and why he got into competition calling. Mark also shares a few tips about trumpet calling as well. He can play a trumpet call well enough to fool 90% of the hunters in the woods into thinking he is a real hen. Mark is a great turkey call maker in addition to a champion turkey caller. Playing the Game with Andy Cantrell This week, Andy Cantrell joins Cameron and Andy to talk about turkey hunting and his 2 books, Paying Your Dues and Playing the Game. Andy Cantrell is an author from Mississippi who comes from a turkey hunting family in the eastern part of the state. His father is a retired game warden and has taken Andy turkey hunting since he was a small boy. Andy learned a lot about the sport from his dad, his dad's friends, and the old Mississippi wild turkeys themselves. The History of the Truth with Will Primos This week, Will Primos joins Cameron and Andy on the show to talk about the history of The Truth video series. Primos The Truth turkey hunting videos were the old school YouTube videos of today where hunters could get a little education on turkey hunting while watching old gobblers getting smacked. Those old school videos feature a lot of personalities that are very popular in the hunting industry today. A Flash Hunt on Steroids This week, Andy shares a hunt with us from this past turkey season that went from low to high in a matter of a few minutes.  This hunt resulted in 3 shots fired, 2 turkeys tagged, and a wild turkey show full of testosterone and insanity afterwards. A Quick Chat with Denny Gulvas This week, World Champion Turkey Caller, Denny Gulvas joins Cameron and Andy to talk turkey talk. Not only is Denny an award winning turkey caller, but he is a student of wild turkeys and their conversations. Denny does not believe wild turkeys call just to call to locate each other or alert each other to danger. He believes there is much more to the calling of wild turkeys.  In this interview Denny shares his thoughts about how turkeys communicate as well as a little clip of one of his "hunts." I use the word hunt loosely because Denny only hunts with a camera and microphone. He has amassed hundreds of hours of video and audio of wild turkeys, and he is a master of the language of turkeys. An Unbelievable Bow Hunt This week, Cameron shares a turkey hunt where he "guided" a friend on a bowhunt.  If you like hard gobbling Eastern wild turkeys, then this is a hunt you will love to listen to. How Turkey Hunters Hunt with Alaina Gerrits and Bret Collier This week, biologists Alaina Gerrits in Wisconsin and Bret Collier in Louisiana join Cameron and Andy to discuss a study that shows us how turkey hunters hunt. This study took place over 5 years where turkey hunters were asked to carry a GPS tracking device with them while they hunted turkeys. There is some fascinating information garnered by the research study. Truthfully, the findings of the study are not terribly surprising. We do also learn how wild turkeys react to the hunters who are tracked during the study.  Listen in as we discuss how turkey hunters hunt and how the turkeys they are hunting react to our actions.

Recap of the 2022 Unicoi Custom Turkey Callmakers Show This week, Andy shares with Cameron the stories from this year's Unicoi Custom Turkey Callmakers Show in Georgia.  Andy made away with some amazing sounding turkey calls by Dan Harris, Lamar Williams, and Mark McPhail. He also got some great audio from the call collector's seminar held on Friday night and some awesome interviews with Will Dutton, Anthony Ellis, and Mark McPhail.  You deer hunters are going to get a little listen to the deer call that Andy got from Brian Lawter as well. 2022 NWTF Convention and Sport Show Preview with Pete Muller Pete Muller with the NWTF joins Cameron and Andy this week to discuss the upcoming NWTF Convention and Sport Show held in February at the Opryland Resort in Nashville, TN. The biggest turkey hunting sport show is back live and in person this year at the Opryland, and it is sure to be a great time.  There are a couple of changes in store for attendees this year due to COVID and other issues, so be sure to listen in.

A Turkey Hunter, Three Toms, and the Kitchen Sink  Join Andy and Cameron as Cameron shares an exciting hunt from this past turkey season.  Cameron sees these turkeys in a field on some private ground, and he worked pretty hard to get these toms away from a hen. Despite the weather not cooperating and the fact that these birds were hanging out on private ground, Cameron stuck it out and put a tag on one of these birds. When all of the cards are stacked against you sometimes you just have to throw the kitchen sink at a turkey to have success. That is what Cameron did on this hunt.  Listen in!

An Outrageous Turkey Hunt This week Andy shares one of his spring hunts with us. The day this hunt took place the weather was horrible. The wind was howling, and the temperature was just above freezing. Once the turkey hunt heated up, the cold went away. And the turkey that Andy's hunting partner, Chip, killed tried to climb into their laps. Chip basically had to kill this turkey in self defense. Listen in!

Bowhunting Turkeys and Other Tips with Jordan Barnes This week Jordan Barnes with Close Proximity joins Cameron and Andy on the show.  Jordan is in the process of trying to complete a US Super Slam with a bow and no blind. The Submarine Turkey with Preston Pittman This week, Preston Pittman joins Cameron and Andy to share an update on his 2021 spring turkey hunting season. A Puerto Rican Double This week, Cameron and Andy share the story and audio of Andy and Chip's, Puerto Rican double. This was one of the quickest hunts that Andy had this past season, and it needed to be. With just 30 minutes to go before legal hunting hours were going to end, 2 longbeards were spotted in a field that no one had permission to hunt. So, Chip and Andy had to get permission from the landowner, get in the woods, and call these two birds within gun range in about a half hour. Listen in!

What Are Fall Turkeys Doing with Dr. Mike Chamberlain Dr. Mike Chamberlain joins Cameron and Andy again this week.  Cameron picks Mike's brain about what wild turkeys are doing this time of year in hopes the additional knowledge will help him to be able to locate some wild turkeys to hunt this fall. There is talk about fall food sources and why turkeys start to turn away from food sources that are higher in protein, but require more effort to obtain. Mike shoots down (in a nice way, of course) Andy's theory about how early summer family flocks transition into late summer and then fall. We also get to hear a good bit about Mike's African safari with his son during this summer along with several other interesting topics. Listen in!

The Alaskan Two Bucket Turkey This week Cameron shares the story of the Alaskan Two Bucket Turkey with us. This hunt took place this past spring in "Alaska." Unlike most of the other hunting stories and audio that Cameron and Andy share with you guys on the show, the Alaskan Two Bucket Turkey is not actually the star of this week's episode. The Gobbling Puerto Rican Clear Cut Turkey This week, Andy shares the story of most vocal wild turkey gobbler in the entire territory of Puerto Rico and how he was able to harvest the bird.  This turkey gobbled at least 125 times that morning before meeting the business end of Andy's sweet little 20 something while he strutted and drummed in a clear cut for well over an hour. This is the type of turkey that we all would love to meet every single morning we step foot into the woods. August Turkey Soup A lot of time has passed since Cameron and Andy have done a turkey soup episode where they read and discuss some recent wild turkey news articles. But wait no more. Wild Turkey Research Studies Past and Future with Will Gulsby This week Dr. Will Gulsby with Auburn University joins Cameron and Andy on the show. Will shares some of the very surprising findings from a study regarding nest predation with us. Will shares information on how the study was set up and the data gathered. Will also shares with us the details on a couple of interesting studies that will begin with the 2022 spring turkey hunting season. These 2 studies were funded in part by a fund raising campaign by The Hunting Public and by Turkeys for Tomorrow. One of those two studies will need participation from turkey hunters in the state of Alabama. Wild Turkey Habitat Management with Dr. Grant Woods Cameron and Andy have an incredible episode for you this week with Dr. Grant Woods from Growing Deer TV. Despite Grant being a whitetail deer biologist, he has an incredible amount of knowledge about wild turkeys and wild turkey habitat management. Grant, Andy and Cameron discuss how Grant took his property that he calls The Proving Grounds from having 1 gobbling turkey on it his first year of owning the property to a point where he now has one of the premier turkey properties in his state.  They also discuss some additional things that we hunters and land managers can do to improve our turkey habitat and our turkey population as well. I do not think there is an episode of The Turkey Hunter Podcast where so many different topics that can benefit wild turkeys has been discussed. Listen in!

The Story of Andy's First Puerto Rican Turkey of 2021 This week Cameron and Andy relive and replay the hunt where Andy killed his first wild turkey of the 2021 spring season in Puerto Rico. This is a unique hunt for Andy because he showed a lot of patience in not busting into the woods after a gobbling turkey. He instead waited for the turkey to come to him.  This is a pretty cool story and a pretty cool hunt. Listen in!

The Rise in Nonresident Turkey Hunting License Sales This week, Cameron and Andy have a data nerd on the show to talk about nonresident wild turkey hunting license sales and the effect that YouTubers and social media influencers have on them. We discuss how some states are paying social media influencers to come to their state to hunt turkeys in order to promote turkey hunting in the state and boost hunting license sales. These payments are being made to influencers at the same time these states are fighting to turnaround population declines by cutting season lengths and bag limits.  Yes, these states are paying others to promote hunting turkeys in the state at the same time they are limiting opportunities because the population of turkeys is declining. Something is rotten in the state of Denmark! Our guest data nerd shares actual numbers with us regarding the incredible rise in out of state license sales in states all across the country.  What should states do to combat this increase in sales and wild turkey harvests? Are there ways that states could cut back the number of out of state license sales for wild turkeys without limiting opportunities for resident hunters to harvest turkeys? TSS Discussion and Other Turkey Talk Cameron and Andy discuss TSS (Tungsten Super Shot) on this week's episode and a few other topics. There are so many disputes on social media about whether or not TSS shotgun shells should be banned for hunting wild turkeys or not. Cameron and Andy have a friendly discussion about TSS shotgun shells for turkey hunting. Cameron basically says that he would like to see some studies done where eliminating TSS, decoys, fanning, etc from the sport of turkey hunting would enable states to leave their bag limits and season lengths untouched. Andy is of the opinion that eliminating tools like TSS is too little and much too late. Cameron and Andy both are of the opinion that, at the very least, season start dates need to be pushed back later in the year to allow turkeys more time to breed undisturbed. There is also some discussion about other turkey hunting topics as well as mention of the state of Arizona hiring a social media influencer to come to the state to showcase Coues Deer hunting in the state and then 3 to 5 years later shutting down the Coues Deer hunting season because the deer had received too much pressure. The question was brought up about whether or not this type of activity is going on in the turkey hunting world as well. Cameron and Andy are both of the opinion that if social media influencers are being paid to turkey hunt public land in a certain state while the state is reducing bag limits and shortening season lengths at the same time then this type of advertising by the states doing so need to be stopped immediately. Cameron's First 2021 Wild Turkey Man, it is great to hear a turkey gobble in the dead of summer! This week Cameron shares his first successful wild turkey hunt of the 2021 season with us. This is another hunt that took place in Alaska (according to Cameron), and the audio from this hunt is incredible. There are several gobbling turkeys in this area he is hunting in, and the particular turkey that Cameron killed came in gobbling and drumming.  Yes, you can actually hear this turkey drumming as he approaches Cameron's gun barrel if you listen with headphones or earbuds. More Musings with Chubbs Kenny Mount, aka Chubbs from the Pinhoti Project, joins Cameron and Andy on this week's episode. The conversation starts out talking about the effects of social media on turkey hunting, and it just took off from there. There are a multitude of topics covered in this interview with Kenny, and many of the thoughts and statements shared are, at times, quite contradictory. The talk gets deep and personal in this episode, and Cameron and I think you'll find it a very interesting interview. An Intense Wild Turkey Hunt in Alaska This week, Cameron shares an awesome turkey hunt with us with lots of gobbling from several Toms. In fact, the hunting was so good in that particular spot that Cameron is hushmouthed about the state that this hunt took place in. Thoughts of a Competitive Turkey Caller with Hunter Lemoine This week Cameron and Andy are joined by Hunter Lemoine.  Hunter is a Louisiana state turkey calling champion and all around turkey hunting machine. Hunter also heads up the state calling championship competition, and Cameron gives him a little grief over that. Cameron also gets Hunter to share his thoughts about the wild turkey population in Louisiana. Listen in as there are lots of laughs shared in this episode.

Possible Progress in Arkansas with Jeremy Wood This week, Jeremy Wood, the Wild Turkey Program Coordinator for the Arkansas Game and Fish Department, joins Andy and Cameron on the show. Jeremy and other biologists proposed some fairly drastic changes to the state of Arkansas a couple of years ago, and he got tremendous buy-in from the turkey hunters in the state who care enough about their turkey population to see if these changes will work. Jeremy talks about some of those changes to regulations and season dates as well as some of the results of their research. Jeremy also speaks about some of the habitat improvement projects going on in the state that are beneficial to wild turkeys.
