This week John is coming at you 1:1 before taking a short break. Drawing from his own experiences in real estate before and after the recession, including purchasing a large house in Schaumburg, IL, a condo near Cabrini-Green, and a luxury unit in the Trump Tower in Chicago, he challenges the conventional wisdom that buying is always better than renting. Mon, 18 Sep 2023 - 01min - 53 - E51: Why Homeownership Blows!
This week John is back for an unscripted and unedited episode to speak to you directly about a topic that's been on his mind lately - homeownership.
There are a lot of opinions out there about whether it's better to buy or rent a home, but John wanted to share his personal experiences and thoughts on the matter. He used to be a big believer in the idea that owning a home was the key to financial success and stability. But as he's gotten older and owned multiple properties, John realized that it's not always as simple as that.
There are a lot of hidden costs associated with owning a home - from property taxes to maintenance fees to mortgage interest. And if you don't plan on staying in one place for a long time, it can be even more difficult to recoup those costs and make a profit when you eventually sell.
That's not to say that owning a home is always a bad investment - it can certainly appreciate in value over time and provide a sense of stability and security. But it's important to do the math and consider all of the factors before making such a big financial decision.
At the end of the day, everyone's situation is different and what works for one person may not work for another. John's inspiration for sharing his experiences is to encourage others to think critically about their own housing choices and make the decision that's best for them.

Mon, 31 Jul 2023 - 31min - 46 - E45: Oliver Trevena: From Actor & Young Hollywood Host to Angel Investor
This week John is excited to welcome Oliver Trevena to the Hollywood condo for a great talk about angel investing and the world of celebrity networking and influencers. Oliver is best known for hosting the popular Young Hollywood chat show which, at its height, was available in over 700 million homes in 24 languages. In addition, Oliver has worked in films with the likes of Bruce Willis, Nicolas Cage, Gerard Butler, and many many more. Over the years Oliver has slowly transitioned into more of an angel investor, advisor, and celebrity ambassador for brands such as Caliwater, All Saints, and Holi Scoops. This diversification in his talents has allowed Oliver to now treat acting as more of a hobby that helps to supplement his passions for brand building, investing, and product development.
In this chat, Oliver shares his journey, growing up in East Sussex, and his background in both British theater and dance. By unpacking the world of celebrity endorsements and investments, Oliver emphasizes the importance of focusing on the quality of the product and the team behind it, rather than relying solely on celebrity star power for products that may just be a trend. He advises fellow celebrities to stay in their lane and not micromanage the companies they work with saying, "In my eyes…a celebrity will influence you to try something once. The product is what's going to make you go back."
In addition to discussing the many aspects of his investment portfolio, Oliver and John also discuss the concept of advisory shares in private companies while sharing their insights on a selective approach to joining such boards. The duo are joined by friend of the pod Bob Menery near the end of their chat to discuss their shared love for Boston, some of Oliver's upcoming acting roles, and to reflect on some of the bigger investment opportunities he just missed out on.

Mon, 24 Jul 2023 - 32min - 45 - E44: Christopher "KID" Reid from Kid 'n Play: The Legacy of 50 Years of Hip Hop
Our guest today needs no introduction. John's nostalgic vibes were turned up to eleven as he was joined by one-half of the legendary rap duo Kid n' Play, the one and only Christopher "KID" Reid. From their beloved albums 2 Hype, Funhouse, and Face The Nation, to their classic films like House Party and Class Act, Kid n' Play paved the way for cross-over hip hop stars like Nas, Ja Rule, and Eminem to diversify their talents and break into the Hollywood mainstream.
Despite the fact that KID has cut his iconic flat top fade, he is no less recognizable for his humor, love of the hip hop community, and passion for the art form. This year as hip hop celebrates 50 years of changing and challenging the culture, John and KID dive into the roots of Kid n' Play's music and their pioneering moves into movies, television, and animation. KID addresses some of the criticism that was thrown at the duo during the height of their success while pointing out how diversifying revenue streams and adjusting to shifts in style is now simply accepted as the norm in pop, hip hop, and rock.
This hour serves as both a hip hop history lesson and an inside look at how two friends from New York changed America's perception of hip hop and rap culture while operating on their own terms. Recently performing at the 2023 BET Music Awards in June of this year, the duo proved that they still have what it takes to get a party started and have no plans of slowing down anytime soon.

Jamie is best known for his wildly popular TV show The Jamie Kennedy Experiment and his role in the iconic Scream franchise. In this super sized show Bob and John get the full Jamie Kennedy experience as they shoot the shit about everything from the stupidity of dating apps, Bob's mysterious Saudi investments, Jamie's concerns over censorship, and why trusting banks with all your money might not be the best idea these days.

Every entrepreneur who sets out to start their own venture has dreams about disrupting their chosen space and building their business into a thriving force to be reckoned with. The fact remains that very few entrepreneurs are up to facing the challenges of getting knocked down only to have the guts and determination to get back up again. This week's guest is the kind of warrior-founder who has tapped into that inner strength of a champion and is determined to make his mark on the streaming wars and influencer space of modern media, no matter what comes his way!
Madison Clavon is the CEO of Fightstars Network, a revolutionary platform that provides fighters, promotion companies, and talent in the business of combat sports a way to monetize themselves through a unique marketplace of influencers and sponsorships. After learning the ropes of production during a behind the scenes role as a gaffer and production assistant in Hollywood, Madison hit his plateau in that business and took the risk of leaving everything to create something he was truly passionate about.
Fightstars began leading the way in developing combat sports content and acquiring other shows to build out the network. Inspired by their early success, Madison moved everything to the fight capital of the world, Las Vegas, to open up a media center gym where fighters can train, create content, and focus on recovery. Everything was going well until tragically his mentor and business partner took his own life. Filled with grief and determined more than ever to make the business work, Madison picked himself up off the mat and completely re-branded and re-imagined Fightstars, taking on investment and expertise from outside companies and expanding their vision to help fighters gain the exposure and monetization to take their careers to the next level.

Thu, 20 Apr 2023 - 06min - 31 - E30: Fyre Festival Fraudster Billy McFarland: F#CK HIM or FORGIVE HIM?
This week John welcomes Billy McFarland to the show for a first hand look inside his disastrous and ultimately criminal co-founding of the notorious Fyre Festival. In 2016, Billy alongside his business partner Ja Rule hatched a plan for a "luxury" music festival that promised 5-Star accommodations, celebrity encounters, and gourmet dining. Some ticket holders paid upwards of $100,000 dollars per ticket for the promise of a celebrity and champagne soaked weekend in the Bahamas to find the only thing that was soaked was their ramshackled tents and soggy cheese sandwiches. The event was scheduled to take place in April and May 2017, but was aborted after attendees had arrived due to problems with security, food, logistics, understaffing, accommodations, and talent relations.
In May 2017, McFarland and Ja Rule were sued for $100 million dollars in a class action lawsuit on behalf of Fyre Festival attendees. The following month, McFarland was arrested and charged with wire fraud in Manhattan Federal Court for his role in the organization of the festival. After pleading guilty to two counts of wire fraud in March 2018, he was sentenced to six years in a federal prison. He was released in late March 2022, after serving over four years.
In this episode Billy and John sit down to explore the truth behind what exactly went wrong. Billy is transparent about how he allowed both his ego and his entrepreneurial drive to spiral out of control forcing him to lie to investors, friends, vendors, and finally himself. John and Billy talk about the legacy that his mistakes have left and how time spent in prison forced him to reflect on his actions, his character, and his plans for the future.

This week John is excited to share a pair of conversations with his friend, LA Chargers running back, entrepreneur, and community leader Austin Ekeler, and Colleen McNutt, founder of Lightning Fit, the revolutionary EMS workout technology that has the potential of transforming the way we workout and achieve our fitness potential.
To kick things off, John sits down with Austin for a chat about his rise to the NFL and the challenges that his physical stature presented in his early career. Austin shares how seizing on the opportunities we are given is key to differentiating ourselves in competitive environments. Austin entered the NFL as an undrafted free agent following the 2017 NFL Draft and first served in the backup role to Melvin Gordon in Los Angeles. After Gordon was signed by the Broncos, Ekeler took over as the lead back for the Chargers. On March 16, 2020, Ekeler signed a four-year $24.5 million contract extension with the Chargers and began establishing himself as a key competitor, and popular personality within the league.
In addition to Austin's accomplishments on the field he has also established himself as a force for change and disruption off the field. Alongside a host of other athletes, influencers, and celebrities, Austin has launched The Eksperience, an interactive menu of personalized engagements and offers that allows fans to customize experiences and interactions with their favorite personalities from all walks of entertainment, fashion, and athletics. Aside from his entrepreneurial ventures Austin also discusses the importance of giving back through his work with The Austin Ekeler Foundation, a non-profit committed to providing opportunities to those in need by bringing reusable resources to communities across the nation that can be utilized by a large number of people for many years to come.
In our second segment, John welcomes the founder of Lightning Fit, Colleen McNutt to the show for a quick look at how her inspirational story of how recovering from a serious health challenge led her to discovering the benefits of EMS technology to regain her energy, mobility and life. Colleen shares how after graduating from Columbia University where she was a division one volleyball star she joined a top 4 accounting firm in New York only to fall victim to a rare mitochondrial disease that robbed her of mobility, freedom, and joy. After searching the globe for a treatment that could restore her strength, Colleen discovered EMS technologies. And after experiencing amazing results with the technique, Colleen decided to put her IVY League education to work and founded Lightning Fit, the industry leader in at-home EMS fitness and technology. They quickly made their impression in professional sports, as they were featured in the LA Dodgers Symposium and have the attention of other MLB and athletic organizations. Jeremy Roenick is a former professional hockey player who played the majority of his career in Chicago alongside fellow legends Chris Chelios and Ed Belfour. He was drafted 8th overall in the 1988 NHL Entry Draft by the Blackhawks, for whom he played from 1988 to 1996. Roenick subsequently played for the Phoenix Coyotes, Philadelphia Flyers, Los Angeles Kings and San Jose Sharks over the course of his 20 year career. In this hour, Blaine helps listeners make the important distinctions between market models and sociopolitical models while breaking down the principles of what he calls Compassionate Capitalism. Blaine illustrates why he believes that the single most important purpose of business is to enhance the likelihood of their employees to thrive. He shares why the practice of valuing the soul of your business, while never forsaking your core values and relationships, is a trait of so many successful ventures. In addition to discussing relationship building and leadership, Blaine and John reflect upon shared business experiences and why the tunnel vision of shareholder supremacy can be an achilles heel for leaders.
Blaine is fond of saying "the primary focus of what I do is built upon a foundation that focuses on returning to or regaining the soul of your business – that esprit that gives what you do meaning and vitality and connects to everything your business touches." This focus on your business's unique aspects along with the curation of relationships and focusing on internal relationships while avoiding the dangers of singular growth is an organizing principle in this conversation. Implementing this mindset shift from being a center of accumulation to a center of distribution lies at the core of Blaines' work and mission and John is excited to unpack that message in this episode.

Mon, 30 Jan 2023 - 47min - 19 - E18: Ryan Stasik: From Notre Dame to Umphrey's McGee
Ryan "Pony" Stasik shares the unique ways his successful 25-year-old band, Umphrey's McGee, creates an intimate connection with the audience– from the type of music performed to "first-class opportunities" to catch a private concert backstage or letting the fans give input for controlling the experience live.
Ryan also explains why the band chose to have their own record label and other strategies for business success, including dealing with the challenges of Covid that was "a huge asterisk for the music industry."
Topics include:
How John a "football jock" and Ryan "a very smart student" met at Notre Dame and how their paths crossed years later, both successful in their unique ways from following their passions. Ryan's part in the Chicago-based jam band, Umphrey's McGee, which started with a homegrown audience built from music presented in innovative ways. In 2022, the latest album, Asking For A Friend, continued to surprise fans: https://dcmusicreview.com/asking-for-a-friend-talking-about-umphreys-mcgees-new-album-with-joel-cummins/ The impact of words, which can be a driving force. Ryan has been playing with Brendan Bayliss (who was told by his music teacher in college that he had little chance of making it in the music industry) for more than 30 years. The fork in the road, when Ryan knew he was going to make it after a rough few years. He shares, too, how he was the opening act for Dave Matthews Band (and how down-to-earth Dave Matthews is). A "weekend warrior" approach of priorities as a husband with two kids, the strategy for hitting the financial numbers, and the special ways the band members communicate. Some bands, like The Rolling Stones, make more money on merchandise than performing.About Ryan Stasik
Ryan Stasik, November 13th, 1976, came into this world bleeding black & gold. His Pittsburgh roots run deep despite moving to Kalamazoo, Michigan at the tender age 12, as Appetite for Destruction, the debut studio album by American hard rock band Guns N' Roses, hit the shelves. Ryan began playing piano at 5, and learned guitar shortly thereafter. After meeting Brendan Bayliss, an American musician and the founder, a lead guitarist, and primary vocalist for progressive rock band Umphrey's McGee. Ryan offered to switch to bass since the band had no one holding down the bottom end. Even from the beginning, he was a team player.
Against all odds, this plan worked out.
Equal parts trained pianist and self-taught rocker, Ryan Stasik the bassist, is a confluence of musical forces. As a student at the University of Notre Dame, he co-founded Umphrey's McGee, known as much for their irreverent stage presence as their complex musicality. Ryan is truly a musician knowing no boundaries.
As the toe-tapping backbeat of Umphrey's legendary live shows, Stasik pulls inspiration from anybody and anything that gets hips 'a swaying. Though devoted to studying the likes of Dan Kurtz, Nick Blasky, and Mike Bendy, Ryan leaves plenty of room for Hall & Oates, Iron Maiden, and Sade. In the end, if it takes to a Budweiser and a good laugh, it's welcome in the web of rhythm Ryan calls his repertoire.

Thomas "T.J." Colaiezzi spent nearly two decades as a high level executive in the fitness industry. It was here that he realized that social media was too important to overlook during the hiring process. It bothered him that almost every company "snoops" on candidates' social media behind the scenes. TJ became determined to bring social media screening "above table" by including employees in the process in hopes of making social media background checks as compliant and commonplace as criminal background checks and credit checks.
After months of searching for a compliant solution that gets users' consent and protects both employees and employers alike, he couldn't find anything.
That's when TJ saw that a huge problem existed that needed a solution. That's when LifeBrand was born.
TJ is a self-proclaimed entrepreneur and business nerd, fascinated by the process of starting something small and growing it into something special. Outside of work, he loves spending time with his family (especially his two daughters), woodworking, golfing, watching all Philadelphia Sports Teams, and enjoying good food and fine spirits.

About Michael McDermott
Michael McDermott's brand of rock n' roll brims with the kind of well-honed style and wisdom that can only come from a career on the road and a pedigree in the studio. Effortlessly blending natural folk sensibility, pop hooks, and honest rock, McDermott's music is as much for the outcast as the congregation. It's an exploration of the dark corners of life's journey and it resonates middle class truths through the passionate filter of a kid that grew up on Chicago's Irish South Side.
If you are a fan of Springsteen, Van Morrison, John Steinbeck, Patti Smith then McDermott's inspirational rock is in your wheelhouse, waiting late-night with a guitar, spare smokes and stories of the American heart.
"McDermott's music helped me to find a part of myself that wasn't lost, as I had feared, but only misplaced. That's why we love the ones who are really good at it, I think: because they give us back ourselves, all dusted and shined up, and they do it with a smile…Michael McDermott is one of the best songwriters in the world and possibly the greatest undiscovered rock & roll talent of the last 20 years" -Stephen King

The transition from working for someone to being an entrepreneur is often rocky. However, great entrepreneurs are marked by their resilience and dedication to growing their businesses.
John Cerasani is a seasoned Chicago-bred entrepreneur who understands the transition and highlights his journey, as an inspiration for the entrepreneurial spirit that never dies, even if an entrepreneur decides to retire. That is why he is back from retirement in a brand-new field, venture capitalism, with his new business, Glencrest Global.
The serial entrepreneur, business expert, and venture capitalist recounts his journey, from starting a business, Northwest Comprehensive (giving himself a 2000 percent raise from his kitchen table), to selling that same insurance business to a large private equity-backed player. He has since established prosperous businesses in real estate, insurance, event planning, and food industries. His entry into the venture capital space marks a new experience and focus.
"I believe that all life experiences lead us in a direction, and circumstances will sometimes drive us to make decisions."
Throughout his impressive career, John has been featured in various publications like WGN, FOX, NBC, and CBS. At the age of 27, he was featured in Crain's Business 40 Under 40 for his work with one of his companies.
After selling his insurance business, he decided to slow down and retire. Still, a few months into retirement, John decided to change his professional direction and invested his renewed energy into Glencrest Global, a venture capital business that has quickly grown into one of the most recognized early-stage firms in the US. The company is currently engaged in more than 30 deals and has formed business partnerships with high-profile founders like Jaleel White, Kevin Garnett, Ashley Greene, and Aaron Rodgers.
John shares that entrepreneurship chose him, and the moment he decided to embrace the opportunities it presented, he began thriving. He shares highlights and insights from being a business leader with other entrepreneurs to help them succeed in their business ventures.
"Opportunities will come in different forms each and every day. You need to look for them and know when to embrace them. It is important to keep an attitude of realistic optimism when approaching any situation. Even challenging circumstances are opportunities to learn and grow."
John is also working on his second book, 2000 Percent Raise, which provides people with a blueprint to help them pivot from working for others to working for themselves in successful businesses. He also uses his social media platforms to share entrepreneurial wisdom and connect with business partners, business influencers, and entrepreneurs.
Besides excelling in business, John was a scholarship athlete and Division 1 football player at Notre Dame and Northwestern University. He is also involved in philanthropic efforts and works with nonprofits to ensure that higher education is accessible to underserved communities.

About Nancy Gianni
Nancy Gianni is the Chief Belief Officer and founder of GiGi's Playhouse Down Syndrome Achievement Centers, as well as an author and public speaker.
When Gianni gave birth to her beautiful daughter, GiGi in 2002, she received a Down syndrome diagnosis that she wasn't prepared for. Following her daughter's diagnosis, her fears, coupled with the negative reactions of medical professionals, made Nancy believe that her life, as she knew it, was changed forever.
Only a few months later Gianni's entrepreneurial spirit kicked in and she launched the first GiGi's Playhouse in 2003, creating the only network of Down Syndrome Achievement Centers in the world. GiGi's Playhouse is now a $22,000,000 NFP with 60 brick-and-mortar locations and startups in the United States and Mexico, as well as serving families in over 80 countries. GiGi's provides over 4,400 hours a week of FREE educational, therapeutic and career programming services to over 30,000 individuals and their families. With a demand to open 200 more worldwide using her replicable model, Gianni is tireless.
As the dynamic force that is changing the disability world, Gianni's story has been featured on large scale media worldwide. Gianni, with over-the-top energy and drive, serves as both the visionary leader behind the organization's launch and dramatic growth; and perhaps in her most important role, being GiGi's mom.

Mon, 28 Nov 2022 - 41min - 10 - E9: Whitney Reynolds: Building an Award-Winning National TV Show from the Ground Up
In this episode, Emmy-nominated and Telly Award-winning Whitney Reynolds talks about helping listeners "fall into hope," which is her trademark that changed the dialogue for talk TV.
She shares from experience, after transforming her challenging childhood.
Host John Cerasani says the sincerity and wholeheartedness of Whitney's candor "bleeds honesty." He also commends her for unbiased, positive messaging that differentiates her from many others.
Topics covered in this interview:
Whitney's "dynamic, inspirational connection with her audience," which she attributes to knowing her gift at a young age. The challenges and successes of owning The Whitney Reynolds Show, and being independent from the networks. Her rise from being on TV at age 23, later growing her own show into 6 markets, and becoming nationally syndicated in 2021. The "God wink" of hosting the public media awards on PBS, and bringing her "mission-based" show there, based on creating "a safe space." The differences of being on multiple platforms, from her show to other arenas like iHeartRadio. Her commitment to being on TV for the long-term, and her spiritual practice to nurture her soul as she juggles many family and work obligations. The significance of calling herself "Chief Inspirational Officer" at work and at home.About Whitney Reynolds:
Whitney believes in more seats at the table, inspiration in the hard moments, and hope for all.
This mindset for unique programming originally bucked the trend when The Whitney Reynolds Show launched in 2012 on PBS. The show's inspirational mission developed from Whitney's firsthand experience with a challenging childhood. She had the gift to gab and combined that to create a program that flips the script–one that invites viewers to switch seats and feel seen for exactly where they are.
She is the Executive Producer, Host and the "Chief Inspo Officer" of the Telly Award-winning and Emmy-nominated Whitney Reynolds Show. Prior to launching her nationally syndicated program, she worked in news for NBC and went on to launch her first talk show on that network.
During college at Baylor University she interned for Good Morning America and fell in love with the national stage and its potential reach. When Whitney was just 25 years old she stepped into owning her own show and created Whitney Reynolds Media.
Not being owned by the network truly jump started her entrepreneurial journey. Whitney's business mentor is Melissa Bernstein of Melissa & Doug who, like Whitney, also started her business in an extra space in her home, however it has since grown to a $500M company.
Whitney's "safe space" mission however, doesn't stop with her TV program. Since 2013 she has hosted a motivational "give back" segment on iHeartRadio and in 2021 launched a national iHeart Podcast, Pop and Positivity. She also authored Beyond The Interview and has a column in Cancer Wellness Magazine.
Over the years Whitney has helped bring in more than $2-million in fundraising for local and global charities through her media work. She currently sits on the Advisory Council for Dress For Success and is on the board for The Service Club of Chicago.
Born and raised in Oklahoma, Whitney has learned how to combine southern charm with big city hustle. Her motto is: "If the door closes, find the darn window." Whitney lives in Chicago, in the Roscoe Village neighborhood with her husband, Dave, and her twins, Marlowe and Acher, and their shih tzu, Sir Crouton. When she's not on camera, it's guaranteed you will still find her talking, she simply loves people and their stories.

Mon, 21 Nov 2022 - 36min - 9 - E8: Jason Hiland: The Golf Episode
In this episode, Jason Hiland, a successful golf business entrepreneur three times over, shares insights on building his niche markets within a highly competitive industry.
John also gives a glimpse into his entrepreneurial journey, leaving a major insurance company in 2005 to go out on his own which gave him a "2000 Percent Raise" by 2010. He has since created generational wealth for his kids and great grandkids.
Topics covered in this interview:
–Jason's three golf businesses (the first one he started at age 22): Diamond Tour Golf, Hurricane Golf (which he calls "the TJ Maxx of golf online with all the major brands") to his "passion project," Sub 70.
–Background on the golf industry, including the top ranked 8 golf courses in 2022 in America:
Hint: #1 is Cypress Point in California; and learn why #8, Sand Hills Golf Club in Nebraska, is Jason's favorite. The best major golf manufacturing brands by category, with PING Golf rated for "best quality."–The inspiration for Sub 70 was an online suit company called Combatant Gentlemen (https://combatgent.com/) producing high quality suits at a fraction of the cost. You only need to get these online suits custom-tailored to have the look and feel of a Hugh Boss or more expensive suit, according to Jason.
–Jason now creates custom-made golf clubs that are like "pieces of art," using the internet for the lower cost, direct-to-consumer model, combined with "a Nordstrom level of customer service." He calls his products "understated elegance."
–The three-year process of product development, and how much "packaging matters."
–Why his marketing is subtle.
–Jason's business never does a sale except on Cyber Monday.
–The importance of "quality first," with the product both performing well and looking good.
–The way Jason has built a natural/organic community for his brand.
–The best part of a direct-to-consumer business is talking to the customers all the time.
–The golf clubs are played at a professional high level, with Jason sharing on which tours they have been used.
–What John looks for as a venture capitalist, and how he started his company at his kitchen table, and how he scaled the company with his own money.
–Jason's philosophy on bootstrapping his own company, living below his means, reinvesting his profits and not diluting the equity by seeking outside funding. He shares how he scales his 25-person company, as it grows.
–Jason shares his three favorite golf-related movies.
About Jason Hiland:
Jason grew up in a small town in northern Illinois. With a love for golf and a strong work ethic, he enrolled at University of Wisconsin Osh Kosh. Upon his graduation in 1995, he immediately started his first golf equipment company, Diamond Tour Golf.
Hurricane Golf was his second foray, launching in 2008.
In 2019, Sub 70 was introduced as a passion project after decades working in the industry and becoming an expert in the golf club business. Following a direct-to-consumer model, it has allowed Jason to create golf equipment with no compromise on materials or customer service, while maintaining a promise to redefine expectations in the golf industry. It has quickly become his most successful venture. As Sub 70 CEO, Jason focuses primarily on club design/production, partner relationships, sales development and still prioritizes personally talking to customers and handling weekly club fittings.
Jason's passion for golf began at 9-years-old when he stood on the roof of his parent's barn for hours at a time, working out-of-round balata balls through the trees and fence posts of the property with his groove-worn Junior Pro 6 iron.
Jason will still tell you that one of the greatest days of his life was when his father brought him to the local farm store and let him pick up that set of junior clubs and bring them home. Jason can recognize the pull of the gentlemen's game in his earliest memories, and has spent his life working to help people experience the same sense of excitement and joy that he felt when he first held those clubs.

Mon, 14 Nov 2022 - 49min - 8 - E7: David Meltzer: Creating Value-Added & Heart-Centered Communities
In this episode, guest David Meltzer, a legendary sports executive, entrepreneur and investor, shares deep lessons from his rebound story of losing hundreds of millions of dollars in the 2008 real estate crash, to becoming the highly regarded success mentor he is to so many now.
With humility and wisdom, he advises to "get out of my way and ask for help." Admitting he was once narcissistic and ego-driven, David said it took him 10 years to learn the bigger lesson of the defining moment that gave meaning to his life.
He is in a men's group now and surrounds himself with "high frequency people" such as Gary Vaynerchuk, Ed Mylett and Lewis Howes.
Topics covered in this interview:
Getting turned down by the bank David trusted when he needed to leverage $40 million, and how it later made him a better person. A glimpse into the history of the Houston Texans, who were never the Oilers, despite what some believed. David's business relationship at Sports 1 Marketing with Warren Moon, HOF quarterback of the Houston Oilers. John is a co-investor with Aaron Rodgers, Roddy White and a number of other high-profile football players. David's previous background included working on the legal team of Samsung while its phone division was going public, and at another billion company in 1995 while he was fresh out of law school. He was later hired for his expertise in "intermarrying sports with technology"--becoming CEO of the renowned Leigh ("Lee") Steinberg Sports & Entertainment agency, which was the inspiration for the movie Jerry Maguire. David believes success is about building community, and he is drawn to working with open-minded people with humility, who can be either power sponsors (those who can help him) or sponsors (someone who knows someone who can help). He offers a template for those to complete to be considered in his community, once he knows they have an open mind. Some questions include:–What are you doing?
–What do you like about it?
–What don't you like about it? (which is an opportunity for David to see if this person could be a power sponsor or sponsor).
David's paradigm shift from a world of trade negotiation (give to receive) to a world of abundance, which he believes comes from a value-added approach. He asks others for help, not because he necessarily needs it, but because "the more I receive, the more I can give." He also recommends "feeding those who feed you." Mon, 07 Nov 2022 - 40min - 7 - E6: Ryan DeLuca: Bodybuilding.com's 9 Figure Founder
In this episode, guest Ryan Deluca gives an inside glimpse of growing an ecommerce fitness supplement business from scratch at age 20 into a company he sold for 9 figures, 17 years later.
His story begins with him acquiring the domain name, Bodybuilding.com, for $20,000, in 1997, when the internet was just coming to life.
Host John Cerasani, a venture capitalist, commends Ryan for acting on such a vision, bootstrapping without any other investors, to revolutionize the fitness industry online at such a young age, saying: "There are people who have the ideas, and there are people who can execute the ideas of others. But, there are very few who can execute their own ideas."
Topics covered in this interview:
Three key elements of BodyBuilder.com that made it successful: content (including forums and articles designed to replace those in muscle magazines), commerce and community. The truth about the old saying "It takes a decade to become an overnight success," with Ryan sharing the many years of sleepless nights fearing he couldn't make payroll. "I was continually paranoid, always aware that there were new competitors…in 17 years, I never felt that I could take a break." The sale of BodyBuilder.com first in part to an equity partner, where he retained 72 percent ownership, and later to Liberty Media. The challenges of being retired at 35, after the sale, with Ryan feeling a loss of purpose and not wanting to model to his young children being a dad sitting around with lots of leisure time doing nothing. He called those six months, "the most depressing of his life." John also shares his angst that followed after he sold his insurance company, and had days of feeling like "a walking dead man." Ryan's new business, Black Box VR which he co-founded with Preston Lewis, another fitness fanatic, who helped him grow BodyBuilding.com. The new company is self-funded, but Ryan will be looking for investors as they expand into more locations. Right now, he is still sorting through the complications of a new technology where he has to create all the tools for using it well. Using artificial intelligence and "magically immersive technology," Black Box VR pairs resistance training, gaming principles and high intensity cardio, for people trying to reach their health and fitness goals. Here is one of several YouTube videos that describe these unique workouts: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dJk8ftK-yIE In simplest terms, Ryan describes Black Box VR as "playing a really exciting video game with resistance training and cardio to get a really good workout," which takes the boredom out of getting and staying fit.Gyms in these areas have free tryouts of the new Black Box VR:
Boise, Idaho San Francisco, California Phoenix, Arizona Oceanside, CaliforniaJohn encourages other gym owners to consider offering Black Box VR as a way to differentiate themselves. Home versions of the product are in development, but not yet available.
About Ryan Deluca:
Founder and of Bodybuilding.com, now CEO and Co-Founder at Black Box VR
Ryan DeLuca founded Bodybuilding.com in 1999 in his garage in Boise, Idaho at the age of 20. Under his leadership, the company skyrocketed to nearly $500,000,000 in annual revenue before he stepped down as CEO in 2015.
With almost zero startup capital and no outside investors, his team grew the company from nothing to become the world's most visited fitness site and largest e-tailer of sports nutrition products. From the beginning, the company was focused on transforming the lives of its millions of customers and staying true to the core principles that they passionately believed in.
Profitable from the start, Bodybuilding.com was eventually purchased by Liberty Media. Ryan was named Entrepreneur of the Year by Ernst & Young in 2009 for the Idaho/Utah region and Inc. Magazine called him one of the "Top 5 Coolest Entrepreneurs Under 30."
With 800 team members spread throughout six states and four countries, Ryan was proudest of the fact that Bodybuilding.com was consistently named one of the best places to work.
Ryan was temporarily retired for only six months before the startup bug bit him again. Together with his co-founder Preston Lewis, Black Box VR was born, merging their passions for technology and fitness and the way they can intersect to help people transform their lives. Black Box VR has six gym locations open where members can immerse themselves in a virtual reality game that delivers a complete strength training and cardio program. The company was named Best Startup of CES in 2019.
In his spare time, he's a private, instrument-rated pilot with over 2,700 flight hours. You can usually find him flying his Pilatus PC-12 turboprop around the western USA on the weekends for fun, charity, and business. Ryan's an avid non-fiction reader, loves health and fitness, and recently took up ballroom dancing, much to the amusement of his friends and family.

Mon, 31 Oct 2022 - 47min - 6 - E5: Tracy Tutor: Luxury Real Estate Game Changer
In this episode, one of LA's top real estate agents, Tracy Tutor, who is also well known as an author and cast member on Bravo's popular Million Dollar Listing Los Angeles TV show, shares insights on the market and provides a glimpse into her new wine company.
Tracy shares the uniqueness of living in many areas in California, from LA and Beverly Hills to Malibu and Orange County/Newport Beach.
Topics covered in this interview:
-Tracy's investment as a co-owner of UnsweetWine.com, bringing sugar-free wine to the market, affordably. The wines, priced between $13 to $15 and offered in four varieties, are sold only online right now. A wine lover, she dislikes "the snobbery" of the industry and wants to make wine accessible to all. She also sees the sugar-free content a plus over organic wines, particularly in the burgeoning health and wellness industry.
-Her "stardom" as the first female cast member on Bravo's Million Dollar Listing LA Show, which is considered the most respected show in real estate and followed by people all over the world. She gives an inside look at the success of this show, now in its 14th season. She shares that the show will be unveiling "a fresh look" by the end of the year.
-The state of the real estate market, with prices and interest rates "evening out," so it's no longer a seller's market, but not to be feared. Interest rates now of 4 to 5.5 percent are still much lower than when she entered the field in her early 20s.
-Host John shares that his West Hollywood property he purchased with Tracy's help has already increased in value from $2.5 million to $3.1 million since purchasing last year.
-The LA market has slowed in the $5- to $10-million market, but is "booming" in the $30 to $70-million range, according to Tracy.
-The luxury home market, over $10 to $20- million, is almost always cash deals, and represents 20 percent of the real estate business for the company in which she works (Douglas Elliman Beverly Hills).
-Fewer people, unless international buyers, are drawn to high-rise living in LA like they are in other popular cities. Instead, they prefer to be outside due to the favorable weather and have properties with backyards.
-Best LA real estate investments are "generational assets," where you look for areas that have an infrastructure being improved upon and built. The financial gain is over the long-term, as LA has run out of space.
-The influx of brand name hotels now coming to LA.
-Tracy's favorite TV shows.
About Tracy Tutor
Tracy Tutor is a top real estate agent at Douglas Elliman Beverly Hills, consulting with some of the world's top architects and developers. She was the first and only female cast member on Bravo's Million Dollar Listing LA TV Show.

Mon, 24 Oct 2022 - 40min - 5 - E4: Zack Oliver: Inside Look at How College Athletes Make Bank
In this episode, John asks subject matter expert Zack Oliver, owner of MatchPoint Connection, to educate listeners about NILs.
Zack's company, an innovator in this NIL space, is a trusted marketplace for bringing athletes together with brands.
NIL, which is a newer buzzword in college sports, stands for "Name, Image and Likeness," which is used in brand marketing, bringing new opportunities for college athletes to make money.
The market is taking off as a result of a July, 2021 ruling by the NCAA, allowing student athletes to get compensated, based on deliverables. The ruling was expanded in 2022 to allow students to work with donors and alumni of schools through charity, tailgating and other events to get compensated for their appearances and use of NILs.
John calls Zack "a genius" for his expertise, yet he also makes it clear he is not one of the early investors. He chose Zack as a guest to educate listeners, based on how articulate and solid he is, based on thorough research John conducted.
Topics covered in this interview:–John's entrepreneurial side hustle in college as owner of his "Star 69" events promotion business, and how challenging it was to make money as a college athlete back then, when restrictions limited time working to breaks and summers off.
–Transfer portals, (where college athletes can change schools) were "a mess" this year, with the largest amount of transfers of all time, according to Zack.
–The start of MatchPoint Connection, which is both a mobile and web "app" based on:
An algorithm matching businesses to student athletes based on mutual interests, social media following and locations. Chats and transactions are also integrated on the app. The tech developers are in the US, which is important for their understanding of the American sports culture. It aggregates the entire influencer relationship, using Zack's skills as a former trader for CitiCorp to know how to match businesses to sellers (in this case, athletes). The company launched its MVP (Minimum Viable Product) in April, 2021, and has grown to solidify "a good stake" in the South–Alabama, LSU, and Arkansas to name a few. It has also signed its first exclusive deal with a 5-Star athlete who is now in high school. The financing behind the company and its long-term plans.–The future of NIL-related businesses, with a lot of consolidations expected in the next five years due to the number of emerging competitors.
–The importance of finding a way to teach these young athletes financial literacy, a concern of John's, so they do not lose all of what they earned quickly. Zack notes that many are 1099 employees who are not always prepared to save for taxes. They can even be unaware that a car given to them is a taxable asset.
About Zack Oliver:
In addition to co-founding MatchPoint Connection, Zack is co-founder of Oliver Investment Group in New York, NY.
Zack has both a B.A. and M.S. degree from Northwestern University. He was a Volunteer Group Leader for 3.5 years at Uplifting Athletes, creating football drills for more than 200 young athletes to improve their football fundamentals.

Mon, 17 Oct 2022 - 38min - 4 - E3: Andrew Sallee: Building High Net Worth Through Real Estate (Slowly)
In this episode, John Cerasani invites his friend and successful real estate investor, Andrew Sallee, to give tips and insights on how he built his $128 million portfolio of assets.
Together, they share lessons learned from the recession of 2008, wisdom about what makes a great investment, and the importance of pacing oneself as you start purchasing real estate. "You have to stay in it for the long-term. It's not a get-rich program at all," Andrew advises.
Andrew began reading Rich Dad, Poor Dad by Robert Kiyosaki at age 28, while selling windows and then buying his first property.
While commercial real estate can be more lucrative than single-family homes or apartment complexes, Andrew strongly urges potential investors against taking that leap until they have a net worth of at least $10 million.
Topics covered in this interview:
–An overview of investing in single-family homes, apartments and commercial real estate.
–Focusing on triple net investments and what they entail.
–The pluses and minuses of investing in "a strip mall," and what to look for in types of tenants to attract to commercial real estate ventures (hint: higher education and health care-related companies are wise choices).
–Insights into how Andrew built his portfolio of $128 million in assets (slowly) by saving up, buying something, saving up, and buying something else. He also shares his story of selling his Corvette.
John, not as heavily invested in real estate as Andrew, discloses he has a real estate portfolio that includes:
The Vea Newport Beach Hotel An apartment development in Korea Town, LA An apartment development in Minneapolis An apartment development in Azusa, California A series of "one-offs" bought and sold going back to 2002–The importance of mentors, aligning with like-minded professionals, and being part of mastermind groups.
–Andrew's mentors have included: Tony Robbins (with whom he is "a platinum partner"), Dean Graziosi, Grant Cardone, and Tim Bratz (who at age 37 has 500M in assets, and owns a private island).
–Advice to young investors:
Don't get into anything that can "crush" you. Make as much as you can in your day job, but also go to a mastermind group to keep learning and make bigger connections. When investing in apartments, keep it to 4 to 6 "plexes" and be sure if half of them go empty you can still cover their expenses. Consider investing with groups.About Andrew Sallee | Real Estate Investor
Andrew Sallee is a real estate investor with over $128 million in assets in his portfolio. He has built up an extensive portfolio in commercial real estate and credits much of his success to the extensive network of mentors, coaches, and masterminds that he has developed over the past two decades in business.
Andrew has built several different businesses before going into real estate investing full-time, most notably a roofing and siding company that did multiple millions of dollars in annual revenue.
Now, he is focused on continuing to grow his real estate portfolio and also giving back to his community. He started a nonprofit, Andrew's Kids, where his mission is to provide food and other items to the homeless in his local community by partnering with other nonprofits.

Mon, 10 Oct 2022 - 45min - 3 - E2: Lou Canellis: Discussing the NFL STADIUM BUSINESS & Living the Sports Commentary Dream
In this second episode of "2000 Percent Raise," guest Lou Canellis, an American sports commentator, TV host, news personality and restaurant owner, shares the poignant story of his upbringing that made him the success he is today.
Well known as a host of all five of the TV shows that the Chicago Bears own and produce, and his postgame chats earlier in his career with Michael Jordan, Lou talks about hard work and following a dream.
He starts by thanking his parents, who sacrificed much to give him a good life. His mom, who recently passed away, worked for 38 years as a Chicago public school teacher, and his dad ran a dry cleaning business that was in the family for 60 years. His father would get up every day at 5:30 and work until 7 p.m., even until the time he was in the final stages of cancer and had to have his leg amputated from the knee down.
"I wanted to make them both proud," Lou shares as he describes his rise to success from a high school boy whose dream was to play pro baseball to the well-known sports commentator he is today. "Only .5 percent make it to the pros so you have to have ultimate respect for those who do. The other 99.5 percent better have a back-up plan."
Lou decided, "If I'm not going to play it, let's make a few bucks broadcasting it."
Topics covered in this interview:–The "business of NFL stadiums" and the Chicago Bears moving to Arlington Heights, at an old horse track.
–How important it is for a franchise to "own their own home" and be able to make revenue from it, which can be used to create a Superbowl winner, as noted by John.
–The importance of having a strong work ethic.
–Lou and John both share the impact of losing their mothers.
–The way Lou built a strong and trusting relationship with Michael Jordan, "the best athlete of all times," later being invited to his workouts.
–Lou's "inspired Greek" restaurant, Avli, which was started after two of his other restaurants failed and what he learned from those experiences.
–Both John, who is also an investor in restaurants, and Lou, share the importance of having the right operator.
–Key insights Lou brings to the restaurant investment:
Understanding what people in Chicago love How to create the right menu Targeting an audience Knowing where to build–"location, location, location" What types of employees to hire–Lou's favorite line in the movie Wall Street: "Money never sleeps," which he elaborates upon and ties in with doing what you love. He quotes Steve Jobs, "If you haven't found what you love in life, keep looking."

Mon, 03 Oct 2022 - 36min - 2 - E1: Roddy White & Cole Warner: Elevating Your Game by Building Equity With Sports Betting
In this premiere episode of the 2000 Percent Raise, host and venture capitalist John Cerasani gives us an inside look at his latest investment in MoneyLine, interviewing both the CEO of the company and a major investor well known in the NFL.
To begin, guest Cole Warner, CEO and Co-Founder, sheds light on how MoneyLine is different from other sports gambling companies, including the top criteria venture capitalists and early stage investors considered in choosing to invest in his business.
Then, Roddy White, a former NFL All-Pro wide receiver who is being considered for the Hall of Fame, shares how he first got involved in fantasy football, and why he chose to invest in MoneyLine.
Both guests, along with John, enlighten us about sports gambling trends in venture capital, and the future of the industry.
Another major investor seeing the huge potential for growth in MoneyLine is Austin Ekeler of the Los Angeles Chargers.
MoneyLine has distinguished itself from some of the big name players, like DraftKings and FanDuel, by targeting states not yet legalized with sports betting.
Strategically,, even before sports betting became legalized in some areas, MoneyLine was transitioning from a free-to-play model to also being a real money game based on fantasy sports laws that allowed for two players from two or more separate teams.
Topics covered in this interview include:—John's reasons for providing venture capital to MoneyLine, including the company's ability to be "a great funnel" into Sportsbooks, and also to train and engage novice gamblers. He also shares what qualities he saw in Cole as a successful entrepreneur.
–Roddy reveals that MoneyLine enables an ease of entry, bringing common fun by allowing people to come out and play and "get their feet wet," and "just feel comfortable" with the players. Later, they can invest if/when they want.
A few insights venture capitalists and early stage investors looked for in evaluating a company like MoneyLine:
The Actual Product The Customer Base And Location Total Lifetime Of A Customer The Cost To Acquire A Customer The Ability To Scale Up–Sports gambling companies are valued differently than other businesses, like market research firms, for example.
One company was acquired for $80 to $90 million with 80,000 total customers. Another company was bought for $65 million with 15,000 total depositing players.MoneyLine is in the fixed-odds fantasy space, where customer acquisition numbers can be much lower, according to Cole, making for a great business model.
–Football stories from Roddy White and John are shared, with fun insights like:
Roddy's friendship with Julio Jones, who is now a wide receiver for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, catching passes from Tom Brady. "When Tom Brady plays cards, he stacks the deck. He has all the aces, he has all the faces," Roddy chuckles. Drew Henson, a former Major League Baseball third baseman and NFL quarterback, introduced Roddy to fantasy football, where the two later hosted a related podcast.–Discussions on getting money to college football players in fair and equitable ways, and both John's and Roddy's insights from their college days trying to earn a living while playing football (John for Notre Dame and Roddy for University of Alabama at Birmingham).
Listen in to find out Roddy White's favorite movie, a question John will be asking each guest.
Additional Notes:
The legalization of sports betting in some states, after the Supreme Court in 2018 ended federal bans on its expansion, is creating a potential multi-billion industry, according to this article in Bloomberg:

ABOUT COLE WARNER

Cole started the company with Jason Schubert, CTO, as a side job after graduating from Louisiana State University, majoring in sports marketing.

ABOUT JOHN CERASANI:
John is a highly successful serial entrepreneur, venture capitalist and author, who "walks the talk" in the financial world.
At age 27, he left his corporate job to give himself what he now calls a "2000 percent raise" by becoming self-employed. Hence, he named his podcast accordingly.
Starting at his kitchen table, John grew an insurance company, in less than a decade, into a business he later sold for tens of millions of dollars.
By putting himself on top of "the Org Chart," he was able to not only reap the benefits of increased pay, but he also built equity for himself, instead of for others for whom he worked.
He now loves sharing his lessons learned along the way with the masses to help listeners elevate their game and grow from his business insights, private investment tips and life advice related to finances.
The 2000 Percent Raise podcast was created in response to demand from his large social media following on Instagram and TikTok that wanted more of his expertise.
Some of those social media posts include 60-second clips, ranging from telling his audience the proper way to evaluate a rental property, to insights on how he became part of the investment group that bought the Newport Beach Marriott — which they then reimagined as The Vea.
Based out of Chicago and Los Angeles, John will continually bring many high-profile guests on his podcast, including: athletes, celebrities, entrepreneurs, thought leaders, and industry insiders.
John's no-nonsense approach to sharing is designed to entertain and educate at the same time. He encourages people to join his mailing list at https://2000percentraise.com
