Shannon Brenda Greene[1][2] (born May 2, 1958), known by the mononym Shannon, is an American singer and songwriter of freestyle and dance-pop music. She is best known for her single "Let the Music Play" and "Give Me Tonight" which topped the Billboard Dance Club Songs chart in 1983-84.

In 1985, Shannon released her second album "Don't You Wanna Get Away," with the same-titled single reaching #1 on Billboard Dance Club Songs chart.

By the time her third album was released in 1986, it appeared her steam was running out. The album "Love Goes All the Way" failed to chart any singles on the dance charts and the radio. What is odd is that Shannon helped pioneer the freestyle genre and it was going stronger than ever at the time. Expose and Lisa Lisa with Cult Jam was very successful on the radio and in the clubs. Freestyle dominated the club charts and radio ...

Formed in Liverpool in 1980, Dead or Alive achieved their stride in the mid-1980s, gracing the UK Top 40 charts with seven singles and the Top 30 with three albums. Notably, they were the first act to score a number-one single under the legendary production team of Stock Aitken Waterman (SAW). At the height of their fame, the band's lineup included Pete Burns on vocals, Mike Percy on bass, Steve Coy on drums, and Tim Lever on keyboards. Over their career, they released seven studio albums and five compilation albums.

Two of their singles even cracked the U.S. Top 20 on the Billboard Hot 100: "You Spin Me Round (Like a Record)" reached No. 11 in 1985, and "Brand New Lover" climbed to No. 15 in 1986. The iconic "You Spin Me Round" not only topped the UK charts for two weeks but also enjoyed renewed attention in 2003 and 2006 after Pete Burns appeared on the reality show Celebrity Big Brother.

As a Gen-Xer who grew up in the '80s, I can confidently say that Dead or Alive was a cultural powerhouse. Besides their chart-topping singles, tracks like "Lover Come Back to Me," "My Heart Goes Bang (Get Me a Doctor)," "Something in My House," and "Come Home With Me Baby" were staples that filled dance floors during their heyday.

After having finished the Exposé diva series, I decided to round out a couple of previous requests for 80's iconic artists. The next entry into the Diva Hall of Fame is none other than Bananarama.

Bananarama is an English female pop music vocal group formed in London in 1981 by friends Sara DallinSiobhan Fahey, and, Keren Woodward. Their success on both pop and dance charts has earned them a listing in the Guinness World Records as the all-female group with the most chart entries in the world.[1]

The group was phenomenally successful in the UK and throughout Europe with a fair deal of success in the US. Hit's like "Na Na Hey Hey (Kiss Him Goodbye)," "Cruel Summer," "I Heard A Rumor," and the worldwide #1 "Venus" are staples in their massive catalog.

Their overall success heavily relied on popular songs from the past, reinterpreted for a newer audience. It was this successful formula for much of the 191...

We're going back to the 80's this week with our latest Diva Hall of Fame entry, Exposé!

Exposé is an American Latin freestyle vocal group. Primarily consisting of lead vocalists Jeanette JuradoAnn Curless, and Gioia Bruno, the group achieved much of their success between 1984 and 1993, becoming the first group to have four top ten hits on the Billboard Hot 100 chart from its debut album, including the 1988 #1 hit "Seasons Change".[1] In March 2015, Billboard magazine named the group the eighth most-successful girl group of all time[2]

Back in the day, these ladies struck gold with their debut album "Exposure," which racked up 4 top tens hits ("Come Go With Me," "Let Me Be the One," "Point of No Return") and the one number 1 hit "S...

In the twilight of 1986, I found myself back in my hometown, rebooting life after a pause post-high school. As fate would have it, I returned to C&C Music/Video—a place that had worked for during my high school years. Erasure's "Oh L'amour" was already setting dance floors on fire, but honestly, I hadn't deeply considered the duo behind the beats. That changed, and how, when their extended play album "The Two Ring Circus" was released.

Before we dive into the Erasure saga, let's step back a bit. Vince Clarke, one half of Erasure, was already a synth-pop legend due to his earlier stints with Depeche Mode and Yaz (known as Yazoo in Europe). It was the blending of Clarke's genius with Andy Bell's vocal prowess that gave Erasure its distinct sound—a combination that felt like a revelation to my young, queer self. Their lyrics, sharp and universally relatable, had a unique resonance for the LGBTQ+ community.

Now, let's talk songs, shall we? "Victim of Love" is a tune that forever evokes bittersweet nostalgia. It carries me back to memories of Michael, a man 20 years my senior who became a mentor and friend during those formative years. He tried to enrich my life with opera and introduced me to the camp classic "Mommie Dearest." We crossed the line from friendship to romance and his memory...
