All Things Wild Turkey with Dr. Grant Woods  In this week's episode, Dr. Grant Woods joins Cameron and Andy to discuss all things wild turkey. We talked about how the frigid temps experienced a few weeks ago might affect the young and old turkeys. And, we talked about how we can sometimes do more harm than good when we begin a supplemental feeding program for wildlife and introduce foods to them that they are not used to eating at that time. Grant also shares how small tract landowners can best manage those tracts for wild turkeys. He talks a little history about hunting for sustenance and some trapper journal information about wild turkey populations in the late 1800's and early 1900's. Grant talks a little about the importance of those first two weeks of a poult's life and what we can provide those poults to boost their odds of survival. 2024 Unicoi Recap Show This week, Andy shares the audio of the interviews from this year's Unicoi Custom Turkey Call Maker's Show held in January of 2024 at Unicoi State Park outside of Helen, GA. This call maker's show features some of the best custom call makers in the country, and it is an amazing place to go and put your hands on hundreds of turkey calls and learn from the call makers themselves. A Little Alabama Afternoon Delight This week, Andy shares the audio from an afternoon hunt in his home state of Alabama. Although this turkey did not gobble a great deal, he showed just enough interest in Andy to keep Andy's interest in him. Turkey Talk with Adam Butler This week, Adam Butler, the Wild Turkey Program Coordinator with the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks, joins Cameron and Andy on the show. Adam discusses the state of the wild turkey within the state of Mississippi, recent regulation changes made in the state, and the history of the wild turkey within the state and how trap and transfer efforts helped to reintroduce turkeys in certain areas. Home At Last Is The Hunter with Chip Gross This week Chip Gross joins Cameron and Andy on the show to talk about his book, Home At Last Is The Hunter. The Man Who Hunted Men with RT Stewart - Part 1 This week, Cameron and Andy present you with part 1 of the fascinating interview with RT Stewart who is a retired conservation officer who went undercover to bust what was at the time the largest poaching ring ever busted. The bust resulted in 26 convictions of poachers who illegally killed wild turkeys and deer out of season, over the legal bag limit, at night, and just for kicks. RT was a pioneer in undercover work for the Ohio DNR, and he literally became a member of the community in which these poachers were living and put his own life at risk getting video evidence of these violations in the process. The Slam of All Slams This week, Chip Davis joins Cameron and Andy to talk about completing the slam of all slams. Chip is the second person to complete the Grand Slam, US Super Slam, Royal Slam, World Slam, Canadian Slam, and Mexican Slam.  This process took Chip over 30 years to complete all of the slams, and his last turkey in Canada presented him an absolute fit. Fall Turkey Hunting with Roger Parks - Part 1  This week, turkey call maker Roger Parks joins Cameron and Andy on the show to talk about fall turkey hunting, among other things. Roger makes one of the finest gobbler callers on the market today, and the guys talk about that call for a bit. Of course, there's lots of turkey call talk as well. I don't think it is possible to have a turkey call maker on the show and not talk about turkey calls. Roger shares a strategy for killing turkeys no matter whether he is hunting in the spring, fall, or winter. He also shares a few calling strategies and tips as well. This is a great episode with a guest who loves to share his knowledge with others. Maybe the best news of all is that there is more interview to share next week. Listen in!

The Monkey Off of the Back We are back! Today we have Scott McDonald joining us on the show to share a hunt in Tennessee that he enjoyed with Cameron.  This was Scott's third time to hunt in Tennessee. Even though he had some close encounters, he had not been able to mark the state off of his list in his pursuit of his super slam. Cameron offered to help Scott with a hunt to see if they could make it happen in the spring of 2023. This is a fun episode with Cameron and Scott sharing the hunt with Andy. A Turkey Hunting Survey with Jay Cantrell This week Jay Cantrell with the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources joins Cameron and Andy on the show to talk about recent public meetings and a survey for South Carolina turkey hunters. Over the course of the summer, the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources held meetings across the state to talk about the declining wild turkey population in SC. These meetings came about because of the concern expressed to the SCDNR by licensed hunters in the state. As good as the in person meetings were, Jay and the SCDNR felt like they wanted more input from hunters within the state. So, Jay recorded his presentation and posted it on YouTube (click here to watch it). The state also posted their survey online for hunters to take, so that they can get more participation and input on possible solutions from the public. This is a great show, and Cameron and Andy's hope is that more states will take the initiative to hold similar meetings with their hunters as well as take their presentation and surveys online for all who can to participate and have their voices heard.  Listen in and then take some action if you are interested in trying to turn the population decline around in your own state.

Season Recap and Turkey Talk with Preston Pittman This week turkey hunting legend Preston Pittman joins Cameron and Andy on the show to recount his 2023 spring turkey season. The show starts off with some fishing talk because Preston has just arrived home from a great fishing trip off of the gulf coast. After a bit of fishing talk the discussion turns to turkey hunting. A wide array of topics are discussed from call care and storage tips to whether or not to tree call to a roosted tom and everything in between. This is a great episode that we all can pick up a few tips from to make us better turkey hunters. Listen in!

Mountain Pine Forest Turkey Hunt This week, Cameron and Andy share one of their turkey hunts with us. This hunt took place in the mountains of the western US in the spring of 2023. Cameron and Andy were together on this hunt, and it turned out to be a good one with some cat and mouse being played. Although there is not a whole lot of gobbling in the early stages of this hunt, patience, persistence, and the right turkey call paid off in the end. We think you'll enjoy sharing in this hunt with Cameron and Andy in the dog days of summer. Listen in!

2023 Season Recap and Turkey Talk with Donald Devereaux Jarrett This week, turkey hunting outfitter, guide, hunter, and author Donald Devereaux Jarrett (DJ) joins Cameron and Andy on the show to recap his 2023 season hunting Merriam's turkeys in South Dakota. DJ also shares his thoughts on the Merriam's turkey population in the part of South Dakota where he guides turkey hunts after the harsh 2022/2023 winter. DJ has high hopes for the Merriam's turkey population there after having a successful hunting season. DJ, Cameron, and Andy also talk a little about DJ's book, Compositions of a Sickness, and they share a few laughs as well. Listen in!

Season Recap and Turkey Talk with Jeff Budz This week wild turkey killer extraordinaire and guide, Jeff Budz, joins Cameron and Andy on the show to share how his season went both personally and professionally. Jeff's passions for the wild turkey and turkey hunting are obvious and show every time he speaks. Jeff shares his thoughts on the direction of the turkey populations in Florida as well as in the western US after the extreme snowfall and frigid temps they had there this past winter. Jeff is one who loves to push himself to extremes when it comes to turkey hunting, but he stops shy from telling us what his next big turkey hunting goal is. Maybe Cameron and Andy can get that from him the next time Jeff is on the show. Jeff is always an entertaining guest who is full of information. Listen in!

2023 Spring Turkey Season Recap Andy and Cameron are back this week to recap their 2023 spring turkey hunting season.  Both Andy and Cameron share three takeaways from the 2023 season. They discuss some of their experiences in their travels around the country and some of the interesting people they met along the way. Andy shares a story of hens with poults on the same piece of ground as henned up gobblers. They also share whether or not they achieved all of their season goals that they set for themselves early this year. You'll want to listen all the way through the end of the show for a big announcement about going to a bi-weekly podcast format through the summer months. This is a fun show, so be sure to listen in.

Turkey Season Turkey Soup This week, following a week off for a turkey trip, Cameron and Andy share a little turkey soup during turkey season. Many states are starting to report their harvest and licensing statistics. So, Cameron and Andy share some stats for Ohio, Missouri, Tennessee, Kentucky, Louisiana, Arkansas, and Iowa. Overall, so far, many states are reporting excellent harvest statistics. Are these great harvest statistics due to higher turkey populations this year or due to higher hunter efforts and better weather? Well, it is really hard to tell in so many states because they do not know how many turkey hunters they have turkey hunting. So, these states have no clue as to whether there were more turkey hunters in the woods chasing turkeys or some other factor lead to the increase in harvest statistics. In addition to the harvest stats, Cameron and Andy share the story of a hunter who was shot by his hunting partner, and how at some point he just realized and accepted the fact that he was going to be shot. This is a wild story with some pretty nasty looking pictures showing the wounds. Check them out online. And, Andy shares two stories of "hunters" who let the dream of a fresh wild turkey in the freezer get the best of them in New York. Thanks to conservation officers enforcing the law, these two hunters were ticketed and had their turkeys confiscated. This is a fun episode, so listen in!

The 2023 Mossy Oak Wild Turkey Conservation Stamp This week, Daniel Haas joins Cameron and Andy to introduce Mossy Oak's 2023 Wild Turkey Conservation Stamp and to share an awesome turkey hunting story with Tom Kelly. Daniel is the Director of Brand Marketing for Mossy Oak, so he is in the know about what is going on with Mossy Oak and all of their new projects. They've been quite busy over the past 12 months or so with the 2022 Wild Turkey Conservation Stamp, introducing new clothing lines, reintroducing old clothing lines, rolling out the Mr. Fox turkey vest, and the 2023 Wild Turkey Conservation Stamp, just to name a few things they've had on their plate. Daniel shares some of the history behind the artwork on this year's stamp as well as how much money was raised last year with their first wild turkey conservation stamp and where some of that money is going. In addition to the wild turkey conservation stamp, Daniel shares with us his very recent turkey hunt with Colonel Tom Kelly. Patience Pays Off This week Cameron shares a hunt that is fresh on his mind. The hunt is so fresh it is only a few hours old. This hunt takes place in a river swamp bottom with a couple of turkeys that Cameron thinks he let walk the day before. This is a great hunt in the respect that not only did patience pay off with Cameron's passing on a shot the day before, but also that he had the patience to sit and wait at his original setup spot while the turkey he set up on before daylight flew down, walked off, paired up with a buddy, and came back into the area Cameron was set up in. This one is a good hunt to learn from. Listen in!

Turkey Talk with Eddie Salter This week, The Turkey Man, Eddie Salter, joins Cameron and Andy on the show to share an update on his season and some of his most memorable hunts. Eddie talks about being on the TK and Mike videos from the early 1990's, and how much fun he had doing those videos. He also shares the story of how he missed 5 turkeys in one day, and how he also played a part of killing 10 turkeys in one day. We get to hear how he has dedicated this season to his grandchildren, and how they are having a great season. Even his 4 and a half year old grandson has killed a turkey with him this season. Taking Quality Harvest Pictures with Clayton Worrell This week, Clayton Worrell (aka GrizHawk on InstaGram) joins Cameron and Andy to talk about how we can take better quality harvest photos of our turkeys this spring.  Clayton is an amazing wildlife photographer who can capture images of wildlife that convey a feeling or emotion that we think the subject animal could be feeling at that moment in time. His images are truly a work of art. Clayton shares with us how we should frame our harvest pictures in a way that we can refer back to that photo decades later and remember that hunt and that turkey. He also shares with us the importance of cleaning up our turkey to show respect to the bird and to get the best pictures that we can get to share on social media. These images very often go on social media and convey an image of us and our pastime to non hunters. We should want that image conveyed to be a respectful and powerful one. Wild Turkey Science with the Wild Turkey Science Podcast Guys  Cameron and Andy interview Drs. Will Gulsby and Marcus Lashley in this week's episode. Another Piney Hills Turkey Hunt This week, Scott McDonald joins Cameron and Andy on the show to share a turkey hunt he had with Andy in the spring of 2022. This hunt took place on some thick public ground in a tough southern state, but it turned out to be a productive trip for both Scott and Andy as they doubled on a couple of hard gobbling turkeys right around midday. These birds came through the thick woods, split up, and eventually got back together about 45 yards in front of Scott and Andy. It took a lot of patience and trust in their hunting partner to make this hunt a success, but it all paid off as it turned out to be twice as successful as they had hoped. This is a great hunt that will get you fired up for spring. Listen in!

The 2023 Unicoi Custom Callmakers Show Preview with Mark Sharpe This week, Mark Sharpe joins Cameron and Andy to talk about the upcoming 2023 Unicoi Custom Turkey Callmakers Show held at Unicoi State Park in Georgia. This year the show will be held January 13 and 14 of 2023. This show features custom turkey call makers displaying and selling their calls as well as seminars by call collectors and call makers as well. A Waterlogged Turkey Cameron shares another turkey hunt with us this week to get us primed and ready to eat some Thanksgiving turkey. This hunt took place in what is a very common habitat for many of us hunters east of the Mississippi River. This was in a hardwood bottom that, at the time, was flooded. Cameron found some gobbling turkeys in the area. After sloshing through the water to get to them, he setup, called, and soon had his hat blown off by a loud gobbling Eastern wild turkey. The gobbling in this hunt will get your blood boiling and get you wishing for springtime again. Listen in!

Wild Turkey Updates with Dr. Will Gulsby Dr. Will Gulsby from Auburn University joins Cameron and Andy on the show to update all of us on the progress and the one year findings on the ongoing studies being conducted at by his department. We discuss the male wild turkey gonad study and some of the preliminary results there. We also discuss the gobbling chronology study being done within the state of Alabama, and the very interesting early findings from one year of that study. Creating Better Brood Habitat with Marcus Lashley This week, Cameron and Andy share part of the Alabama NWTF Field Day seminar where Dr. Marcus Lashley talks about brood habitat. The general theme of Dr. Lashley's seminar is that as a whole brood habitat is severely lacking across the US. We all already know that having great nesting habitat is essential to having good hatches, but creating great nesting habitat is extremely difficult to do because there is not one particular habitat that hens are likely to nest in.  According to Dr. Lashley better brood habitat is much easier to create because it has several features that are commonly found in the different areas around the US. This is an excellent presentation, and we have part 1 of 2 for you this week. There is definitely something to be learned by all of us from this week's show and next week's show. Listen in!

A Heaping Helping of Fall Turkey Soup This week, Cameron and Andy share some wild turkey news. In this week's episode, Cameron and Andy discuss recent news about an encouraging wild turkey and poult survey in Arkansas, as well as a positive wild turkey and poult report completed in Tennessee. Also, the NWTF has announced this year's inductees into their Hall of Fame. Other states featured on this week's turkey soup episode are Maine, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Maryland, and Missouri. A story of a wild turkey breaking into a home in Ohio may be the story that takes the cake in this week's episode. His wild turkey population has exploded as a benefit of his trapping program. Alan Probst with North American Trapper joins them on the show to discuss trapping nest predators and the predators going after the hens sitting on nests. The Honey Hole Hunt This week, Cameron shares another hunt from this past season with us where he killed another turkey from the same ridge that has been good to him over the past several seasons. This is an early season hunt that took place in some hilly hardwood country with a hard gobbling Eastern wild turkey. Late Season Turkey Hunting Tactics with Mike Chamberlain This week, Mike Chamberlain joins Cameron and Andy to discuss late season turkey hunting tactics. Most of you know that Mike is a wild turkey biologist with the University of Georgia, and his students are spearheading quite a few studies on wild turkeys. In addition to his full time job of managing his students and grad students, Mike is a turkey hunter. Most of the podcasts and seminars Mike has been on are purely about the biology of the wild turkey, but this week Mike joins the show to discuss some tactics he uses to hunt wild turkeys during the late season. Mike's vast knowledge of the bird itself gives him a different take on hunting turkeys during the early, mid, and late parts of the season. In this hunt, he and his brothers have setup on a big mixed flock of turkeys roosted in a creek bottom next to an ag field. A Hardwod Hills Turkey Hunt This week Cameron shares one of his 2022 spring turkey hunts with us. This is a hunt that took place pretty early in the spring out of state in the hardwood hills.  Cameron was nearing the end of the time he allotted for himself to hunt that particular morning, and he struck a tom while running and gunning. With a little strategy he was able to seal the deal and put some meat in the freezer. Also, in this episode, Cameron shares a story of his Osceola hunt this spring that involved a gun malfunction. Talking Turkeys and Life with The Critter Gitter This week, Cameron and Andy have Braedan Henagar, aka The Critter Gitter, on the show to talk about turkeys and turkey hunting. Braedan is a 16 year old young man who lives in Ohio and is absolutely gung ho on all types of hunting. Braedan's favorite animal to hunt is, of course, wild turkeys. He has lots of other hobbies like riding 4 wheelers and collecting reptiles as well. Braedan and his parents also started a non-profit whose cause is to educate others on Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy and to find a cure. Scott McDonald Marks Off a New State This week, our friend and fellow turkey hunting addict, Scott McDonald, joins Cameron and Andy to share a hunt he had last season in a state he needed to continue his quest to finish the US Super Slam. This is a very cool hunt with a very vocal and hard gobbling wild turkey. Mark is not only a champion turkey caller, but he is also a champion duck, goose, predator, and owl caller (as well as some other critters). Mark shares some of how and why he got into competition calling. Mark also shares a few tips about trumpet calling as well. He can play a trumpet call well enough to fool 90% of the hunters in the woods into thinking he is a real hen. Mark is a great turkey call maker in addition to a champion turkey caller.
