- Perfectionism, productivity culture, and competition contribute to a busy brain
- Neurodivergence and trauma can make one more sensitive to daily "micro-traumas"

In this episode, I sit down with author Ann Dowsett Johnston to discuss the complex relationship between women and alcohol. Ann shares her personal journey with addiction and recovery, and how societal expectations have enabled problematic drinking patterns.
Alcohol functions as a "steroid" enabling women to manage multiple responsibilities Big alcohol targets women through normalisation and health claims not supported by evidence Addiction stems from perfectionism, loneliness and the pressure to meet unrealistic standards Authenticity and self-care are discovered through sobriety rather than drinking to conform Storytelling and connection are powerful ways to break the cycle of shame surrounding alcohol
We explore the manipulation of big alcohol companies and how perfectionism fuels isolation.

I'm opening up about what it means to be coachable and open to change. I talk about my own training and methodology as both a coach and counsellor, and the importance of looking deeply at underlying reasons for behaviours rather than surface fixes.
Being coachable requires willingness to look at what's really happening and make necessary changes Our behaviours often have very good underlying reasons related to early life experiences True change comes through discomfort, not by avoiding or dismissing difficult feelings Focus on nurturing the "original human" within through self-compassion instead of self-judgment Choose yourself and your needs above all else, including other people's perceptions
Key takeaways include understanding your relationship with discomfort, learning to nurture yourself through distress, and choosing self-care over people-pleasing.

Sun, 17 Dec 2023 - 62 - #61 Burnt Out AF (Part 2)
I'm joined by autism advocate Viv Dawes who shares her expertise on autistic burnout. She discusses the signs and symptoms of burnout, and provides a 10-point "burnout prescription" for recovery and prevention.
Autistic burnout is a real phenomenon that requires prolonged recovery time. It is not something that can be recovered from quickly. Understanding one's autistic identity and needs is crucial for preventing burnout. Embracing stimming and other self-regulatory behaviors is important. Recovery requires acknowledging exhaustion, reducing demands, spending time on interests, alone time, and time with understanding peers. Recovery looks different for everyone and may involve long periods of rest, changes in routine, and avoiding past overload situations. It is a journey that takes time and space.
Topics we chat about include acknowledging exhaustion, reducing demands, embracing neurodivergent identity, the importance of rest, sensory needs, and more.

Viv Dawes is an autism advocate and author who specialises in autistic burnout.
Autistic burnout is more than just exhaustion—it can involve hallucinations, mania-like symptoms, and feeling stuck in "fight or flight" mode. Masking and constantly shaping oneself to fit an non-neurodivergent world can be profoundly damaging and a leading cause of burnout. Burnout recovery is a journey that can take years as one resets and repairs lost skills and executive functioning.
In this conversation, she discusses her experience helping parents of autistic children experiencing severe burnout and shares insights into the causes and effects of burnout. She also addresses the lack of understanding from professionals and how the education system can better support neurodivergent students.

Personality types are adaptations formed from our environment, not fixed traits Perfectionism and people-pleasing often stem from feelings of not being good enough Busyness and productivity are rewarded but can prevent self-care and processing emotions The present moment is where fulfillment is found, not in achievements or what others think Staying present and prioritising self-care during the busy holidays RESOURCES
I'm also giving you some tips for managing the upcoming holiday season without relying on alcohol.

In this episode, I'm discussing the difference between being preoccupied with alcohol vs finding freedom from it.
Most struggle with alcohol for years before finding freedom - be kind to yourself wherever you're at Cravings are a sign we're in discomfort and need to learn how to soothe ourselves Suppressing feelings doesn't work - we must learn to listen to ourselves with compassion Alcohol numbs us from life's ups and downs, but being present with emotions is healthier long-term Reducing "fight or flight" allows our brain to learn and grow in new ways.
I'm talking about about how our triggers stem from unmet needs and big emotions, and how learning to regulate our nervous system and be present with difficult feelings is key to long-term change.

In this episode, I'm talking with special guest Kristy Forbes about neurodivergence, autism, and the dangers of pushing through our limits.
Neurodivergence is not a defect, our brains are protecting us in sensitive ways We are conditioned from a young age to suppress our true selves Pushing through can lead to burnout, we need to listen to our bodies' limits Giving children and ourselves autonomy over our experiences reduces stress Stepping away from societal expectations takes courage but is liberating
Kristy shares her experience of being diagnosed late in life with autism and PDA, and how that helped her understand her children's needs.
We also discuss the conditioning to be productive and compliant, and how that leads to burnout.

Progress Over Perfection: Bec's New Alcohol Free Journey
In this week's episode of Midlife AF, Emma welcomes Rebecca to join her behind the mic to share her powerful and relatable alcohol-free journey with the world.
After six years of living a completely alcohol-free life, Bec found herself craving the odd drink or two. And slowly but surely, alcohol started to get a bit of a hold again as she began to hide her drinking and feel the shame attached to it.
In this raw and honest insight into this challenging period, Bec shares what it has been like for her to find a new way of stopping drinking, and how important community has been in her journey towards gentle loving kindness and self compassion without judgement."Everybody knew I didn't drink, and I simply couldn't drink in front of anybody. It just wasn't an option. And so it had to be sneaky. And that sneaky element really frightened me."
In this episode, Emma and Bec explore:
- What it means to find out who you really are when you are alcohol-free Why cultural conditioning could be having a significant impact on your relationship with alcohol The importance of a like-minded community and imperfect vulnerability to support you through the highs and lows of alcohol-free life
You'll also learn why it's so important to focus on progress over perfection -the goal is to simply putmoreinto the alcohol free bucket, so that eventually it tips.

The Buzz: Friend Or Foe?
This week we are talking about The Buzz - the reason people drink.🦸♂️ The amazing Buzz. That super guy who comes in and makes everything warm and fluffy, takes us away from ourselves, stops the bloody chatter in our head, gives us an excuse to sit down, gives us that floaty light feeling, and enables us to be fun and funny...or does he?
Struggling with self-sacrifice and feeling the need to escape from myself, the 'Buzz' of alcohol quickly became a sinister allure. In this episode of Midlife AF, I'm going to share with you how "The Buzz" was one of the many catalysts that led me on a journey to rediscover self-love and connection.
I'll share with you how I found alcohol consumption to be an act of self-sacrifice and self-silencing that took me away my true self, as together we explore:
Is the Buzz more sinister than it seems? How giving up alcohol is a radical act of self-compassion Why we should focus on connection and integration, and stand by ourselves to show our kids what is acceptable in relationships Learning to sit in the discomfort of our feelings and be our own soft place to land.Resources:

Sun, 15 Jan 2023 - 17 - #16 - Victoria Vanstone - Coke and Cuddles AF!
Midlife AF Episode 16 -Coke & Cuddles AF!
This week I am talking to the wonderful Victoria Vanstone, who has been prominent in the Alcohol Free and sober-curious space for quite a few years.
What you can expect to experience in social settings when you embark on your journey of sobriety and tips for having an exit strategy if needed Strategies for setting and maintaining social boundaries (even the hardest ones with family and loved ones) Why promiscuity and ‘abandoning’ ourselves is a common experience for many addicts, and how to forgive yourself and move forward with your precious self in tow
In my eyes, she’s well and truly hit gold Celeb status, because when I stopped drinking in 2020 she was one of the very few people ‘out there’ in Australia who were speaking out and having a positive presence on alcohol free living.
To me, Victoria WAS that presence, and she has since grown an incredible community, a hugely successful blog, not to mention a podcast and two-book publishing deal to boot.
The ultimate sober gal with it all!
In this episode, we talk about social awkwardness, feeling the responsibility for everybody else's experience, as well as touching on the important topic of emotional sobriety.
You’ll also discover:We also discuss the positive impact of having a sober community to simultaneously support and lean on as you embrace an alcohol-free life.

Mon, 09 Jan 2023 - 16 - #15 - The New Year AF Episode
Midlife AF Episode 15 -The New Year AF Episode!
It’s officially 2023, so naturally in this episode I'm going to talk about what the New Year means for me, and what it can mean for you as you navigate all of the feelings that come with the unwrapping of a brand new calendar.
The ways in which diet culture is unhealthy and manipulative, especially for women in midlife The importance of rewiring our inner-monologue, and rebuilding the blocks on which we have built our personalities based on societal feedback How to go back to our precious, human essence and nurture her as she navigates the new year with self love and compassion
To me, the new year is about bringing self compassion to the front and centre of these new beginnings, which means we need to say ‘goodbye’ to some of the regular guests who may have been taking up rent-free space in our heads in 2022.
We’re saying goodbye to punishment.
We’re saying goodbye to restrictions.
We’re saying goodbye to changing who we are.
Instead, this episode will empower you to bring in the new year with a sense of abundance, as I’ll share:I’ll also be sharing the most important questions you can ask yourself as we begin this new year together.
“What if there was nothing wrong with you? And what if you didn't need to change? What if you didn't need to punish yourself into anything?”Resources:

Midlife AF Episode 13 -And So This Is Christmas AF
This week I am talking about all things Christmas AF.
Or more specifically, together we will be exploring the expectations and pressure that we put on ourselves having been conditioned to be responsible for everybody else's experience.
It’s not your typical Christmas chit chat, so strap in for some self-love!
Christmas is tough in a world that's created to keep us all working hard and producing, but the good news is that THIS Christmas, you have a choice.
You have a choice to stay with yourself.
You have a choice to create a Christmas period where you get to breathe and have space.
You have a choice, and in this episode you will discover ways to nurture your precious self and essence as together we explore:
“The reason you drink more than you should, or you want more than you wanted to is because of the way it works chemically in your brain. It has nothing to do with you as a human being; no reflection on your morals; no reflection on your weakness or strength.”Resources:

Midlife AF Episode 12 -Giving Your Senses A Great Big Cuddle!
Once upon a time, there was NO WAY this week’s podcast guest could have imagined not drinking.
Sarah Connelly was stuck in a cycle of on-again off-again drinking, binge drinking, drinking alone and feeling shame, guilt and anxiety almost daily.
As a Highly Sensitive Person (HSP) and someone with social anxiety, Sarah drank before she went out. She hated small talk, so she drank to fit in. She drank to numb and soothe her nervous system. She drank away her motivation and her potential.
She was in survival mode, living on a rollercoaster of drunken highs and regretful lows.
Sound familiar?
Then you are going to love this episode as (now 3-years-sober) Thrivalist and The Alcohol-Free lifestyle coach, Sarah Connelly shares her powerful story and gives an insight into the unique highs and lows of being a HSP. Sarah will also help you unpack:
“Learning how to regulate the nervous system…whether you're HSP or not, is huge. Because we drink to change how we feel, and if we can get ourselves to that lovely calm state more regularly, then the urges to drink tend to be less intense.”Join Emma Gilmour and Sarah Connelly as they take us on a deep dive into strategies to start rewriting what is okay and what is not okay not only at a personal level, but in a step to foster broader, positive societal change.

Sun, 11 Dec 2022 - 12 - #11 - When your partner still drinks
Show Notes - Midlife AF Episode 11 -Help - My Partner Still Drinks Without Me!
On this week's episode of Midlife AF, host Emma Gilmour is taking a look at what happens when we choose to be alcohol-free, but our partners and loved ones aren’t coming along for the ride.
Setting boundaries when your partner or friend is drinking in a way that doesn’t feel comfortable for you. Understanding that you can’t ever force someone to change their drinking habits until they choose to do so themselves. Why the most powerful thing you can do is to BE the change you want to see. Avoiding becoming a ‘parent’ in the drinker and non-drinker dynamic. Strategies for maintaining your sobriety when it feels like your partner isn’t there to support you.
What can you do - if anything - when those around you are drinking more than you think they should? Or if you have decided that you're going to live an alcohol free life, how does that work when your long term partner has not?
In this episode, Emma will gently help you to unpack:Emma also generously shares an insight into her own relationship, and ways that she is working on her marriage now.
“Between stimulus and response there is a space. In that space is our power to choose our response. In our response lies our growth and our freedom.” - Viktor FranklJoin us, as Emma takes you on a journey and shares her own experiences into navigating an alcohol-free life alongside friends and loved ones whohaven’tmade the choice to find their groove without booze.

Join us, as Katie takes you on a journey and shares practical strategies that you can use to move closer towards a goal of a greater integration, a greater love and connectedness with yourself and the world around you.

In this week's episode of Midlife AF we talk about happiness, the pursuit of pleasure, and happiness as a form of contentment with the ups and downs of life.
Over the next 30 minutes, together we will unpack:- How dopamine works in our bodies, and itsrelationship to alcohol, pleasure and “the buzz” Discovering the joy of Eudaimonia is in the variety of life Ways in which alcohol-fuelled dopamine takes us away from what is actually happening (and why this is a bad thing) Why women’s hormones change in their 40s and 50s, and what this means for our relationships to ourselves and society Ways that you can unlock your own forms of self care Coming to finally accept that the joy is in the journey
"There are so many great ways to get natural highs. There are so many great ways to calm our nervous systems and to regulate our nervous systems - we just haven't been taught them.”
I'm on a journey to discover who I really am, and why alcohol became such a big part of my life for a long time. In this path of self-discovery, I realized that I used to drink to escape from my reality, and although this was hard for me to accept at first, I know now that this is such a common story for women in midlife.
I’ve learned that life is not meant to be a constant stream of pleasure and that the most interesting and pleasurable parts are in the journey - and I am delighted to share that journey with you.
Join me is discovering the magic in finding out who we are without alcohol!Resources:

Sun, 30 Oct 2022 - 7 - #06 - Member Story with Lou Coates
EPISODE HIGHLIGHTS
In this episode of Midlife AF, you'll get to meet my wonderful friend and virtual assistant Lou Coates. Lou joined me for the Aussie Alcohol Experiment back in July 2021. We'd never met each other before. And she was such an amazing help to me as a participant in the group reminding me to press record on my zooms, and so on. We ended up becoming friends. And I asked her to come and work with me. Lou and I have a lot in common. We both have teenage kids who've had their struggles recently, we both really identified heavily as drinkers, our partners both still drink. We both lost our dads. And in fact, Lou’s dad had just passed away when she decided to do the alcohol experiment and see what would happen for her if she took a break from drinking. And she talks about that very openly in this podcast.
And both Lou and I are very happily alcohol free. Lou’s been through a momentous year this year. She's had a lot going on. And she's done it all alcohol free. As she says in her own words, she doesn't even think about alcohol anymore. I just think that's amazing. That's where we want to be right? Lou’s a woman just like all of us with ups and downs that happen in life. And she's got the added element of having a beautiful, very active four year old to wrangle with as well.
So I'd love you to meet Lou, she's my right hand woman, and I think you will all relate to her story.
So enjoy!

Sun, 30 Oct 2022 - 6 - #05 - The Benefits of Taking a break from Alcohol with Nat Battaglia
#05 - Natalie Bataglia - The benefits of taking a break from alcohol.
EPISODE HIGHLIGHTS
In this episode of Midlife AF I talked to my friend, the beautiful Natalie Battaglia. Nat and I met during the alcohol experiment in 2020. And Nat runs the most beautiful and amazing business, called the mindful mocktail. She is one of the most intelligent and creative people I know. And I feel so privileged to have her in my life. In today's podcast Nat talks about what exactly taking a 30 day break from alcohol does to our body. And why one of the most magnificent things about becoming alcohol free, is the childlike joy you get back that you didn't realise you'd lost. My favourite thing about Nat is the work she does really creates that spirit of abundance, which is what we need to stop our brains from thinking they're missing out by taking a break from booze. I hope you enjoy this episode.

Sun, 30 Oct 2022 - 5 - #04 - Having Your Own Back and Why it Changes Everything with Jay Fields
EPISODE HIGHLIGHTS
In this episode of Midlife AF, I'm going to introduce you to one of my favourite people and probably one of the most influential teachers that I've come across since I've been following this path to an alcohol free midlife.
Jay has had such a big influence on so many different parts of my life. But particularly on my relationship with my family and my relationship with myself. Jay is a somatic experiencing coach, she will tell you about herself in the episode. But she's extraordinary.
She taught me to understand why people-pleasing and over responsibility are so much part of our conditioning, particularly as women, how our emotional boundaries are so porous, we often don't know where we begin. I find drinkers as highly sensitive people, and we're often on high alert, feeling and taking on other people's experiences, so much so that our own experiences don't matter anymore.
It's Jay who introduced me to parts work, recognising that we we are all such precious darling little souls, trying our very best in life. And things that we do and the maladaptive behaviours that we have are there for a reason that they're trying to keep us safe and that their intentions are so good, even if their methods are genuinely not great long term strategies.
For a long time when we're drinking or escaping our world. We haven't been present for ourselves. And so our little souls don't feel like they've somebody who had their back who was looking after them, like somebody who loved them, and this is why my approach, and what I found so helpful in Jay’s work and that is also aligned with This Naked Minds methodology is it's not about beating ourselves up. It's not about saying I'm weak or being ashamed or berating ourselves.
It’s about understanding why we stumble, acknowledging the very real feelings, worries and concerns that got us here. It's about building trust and comforting our precious selves and our distress, reassuring them that we're here now that we're not going to abandon them anymore.
This is a brilliant episode, particularly for anyone who gets triggered and feels like their behaviour of the people around them is causing them to drink. And even if you're not drinking, it's important stuff to learn for when the people around you, your partners, your friends, your children are pushing your buttons and you feel like you're going to explode, which is your nervous system being dysregulated.
You are going to love this episode!!
NB since I recorded this episode I have learnt a lot more about Autism and PDA, with the knowledge I have now I know that whether or not my child goes to school or not will not impact whether they have a fulfilling life or not. So I apologise if that triggers anyone going through something similar and having to advocate for their child’s autism.

Wed, 26 Oct 2022 - 4 - #03 - Why the Body Matters with Special Guest Jolene Park
#03 - Jolene Parks - Why the Body Matters
EPISODE HIGHLIGHTS
In this episode of midlife, we meet the Queen, the thought leader, the godmother of grey area drinking and coaching - Jolene Park.
Jolene has a TED talk, which has had over 300,000 downloads.
We are talking about the importance of nourishing our neurotransmitters, and supporting our nervous systems when we are looking to change our relationship with alcohol.
We talk about trying to medicate a dysregulated nervous system - which is why a lot of people drink - when we've been triggered by our reaction to something or when we're feeling either really extremely joyful or we're feeling incredibly anxious. And the things that we can do, instead of drinking to calm our nervous systems in a way that moves us towards our goal of not drinking.
Jolene explains exactly what Grey Area Drinking is and takes us through and grounding practice and explain why it is grounding that the body is seeking when it reaches for alcohol. It’s fascinating!
I think you’ll love Jolene, she has had a huge influence over my coaching and alcohol-free journey. Thank you for coming on this journey with me as together we find our groove without booze.

Tue, 18 Oct 2022 - 2 - #01 - How The Bloody Hell Did I Get Here?
EPISODE HIGHLIGHTS:
In this episode Emma takes us on the journey from her days as a corporate marketing manager, via a pretty unpleasant breakdown (spiritual awakening), through her long and messy break-up with alcohol and ultimately to where we find her today working as a counsellor, psychotherapist & alcohol coach, living happily alcohol-free. She talks about:
Why there should be no shame or stigma about problematic alcohol use The reasons why we drink are universal; only shame and stigma makes us think that they are ours alone. Drinking and teenagers and how research and recommendations have changed since she grew up. Eating disorders and disordered eating and how a history of this is very common for women and it was for Emma Neuro & gender diversity in the family and late diagnosis of ADHD for herself Changing ourselves to try and fit in. The impact of trying to be all things to all people (mum, wife, employee). How our resilience and tolerance depletes over time How she began to build herself back up and discover who she really was How understanding her values as a non-drinker and beginning to trust her intuition changed everything.Thank you for coming on this journey with me as together we find our groove without booze.

Sun, 16 Oct 2022 - 1 - #00 - Midlife AF Podcast Preview
Welcome to the Midlife AF podcast - for women navigating midlife and their relationship with alcohol! In this preview episode, I'm sharing my intentions for the podcast and what you can expect as a regular listener to the show!
The Midlife AF podcast will;
- Honour how goddamn tough (and divinely freeing) it is to be a woman in midlife
- Provide really practical tools that I use in my coaching business and with myself to create an Alcohol-Free life that I genuinely love.
- Talk and hold space for the things that come up when we take alcohol out of the equation (all the things we were drinking to avoid) and how to approach them.
- Share my joy in the journey of uncovering what made us drink in the first place, how to sit with discomfort and learn how to have our own back and stop abandoning ourselves in our distress
- Talk about what is like approaching or being in the sandwich generation and the impact both our parents and teens can have on our nervous systems, mental health ability to prioritise our own health and wellbeing
- Talk about the menopause and peri-menopause and all it’s unspoken about problems (and benefits) and why it is particular unpleasant to mix with alcohol!
- Talk about trauma, big and little T and what it does to our nervous systems.
- Talk about the reasons women drink - which has very little to do with alcohol and everything to do with how we feel in our bodies and what we are telling ourselves or holding in our subconscious.
- It is highly likely at some point we will get on to Yoni, pelvic healing and the cervical orgasm - mainly because I am interested in the healing opportunities there - haven’t done anything about it yet but I am slowly gathering momentum.
- I will probably talk a bit too much about ocean swimming and how much it helps me mentally and physically as well as my favourite monthly swim at full moon #boobstothemoon
- We will talk about people pleasing, perfectionism and how to work with negative and limiting thoughts and beliefs. And how having to work on this in order to find ourselves is universal for so many women.
- We will talk about the patriarchal culture and society we live in and how that is impacting us
- I am a passionate feminist so if that’s not your bag - see ya!
- I will talk about neurodiversity - as we are a recently diagnosed neurodiverse family - in a positive, informative and honest way. - There is a high correlation between neurodiversity and substance abuse and more and more women in midlife are being diagnosed - we will talk about why that is too.
- We will talk about body image, intuitive eating, disordered eating, diet culture and how this all adds to the bloody heavy load we carry as women.
- This will also be a podcast for fun and laughter and hope as that is my default setting.
- It will also be a podcast full of love and compassion as we know that that is the route to all long lasting transformation. I will bring on awesome guests with wisdom, and experience to share that will help us on our journey. Most of all, I want this to be a place of connection and understanding.
