NWU Business School

At the NWU Business School, we strive to change the way our students think about business. We want our students to become manager-leaders in their own right; to walk away with real-world skills, international accreditation, and pioneering research. With this platform, we aim to give some insight and opinions on burning economic issues in South Africa and the bigger African continent. In these discussions, we strive to shape executive minds in Africa.

  • 11 - SA's economic relations with USA, Russia

The Russian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Sergei Lavrov, and the United States Secretary of Treasury, Janet Yellen, recently visited South Africa for high-level talks with their counterparts in this country.

The OFM Business Hour's Olebogeng Motse spoke to Professor Raymond Parsons, Economist at the North-West University's Business School, who shed more light on this.

  • 10 - Episode 10: The fourth investment conference

Yesterday saw South Africa’s fourth international investment conference. Another R332 billion was pledged in planned projects and investment finance. On paper, it seems like a win for the President, but commentators have raised a number of questions. So I thought it is sensible to ask Prof Raymond Parsons, of the NWU Business School, to update us on the state of affairs. He was kind enough to share some of his views per voice note.

  • 9 - Episode 9: Loadshedding (and the solutions to it)

After a short break loadshedding was back last week, reminding all of us of the vulnerability of our electricity supply and the challenge of overhauling Eskom. So I thought it is sensible to ask an expert to update us on the state of affairs. Corneels Schabort, also of the NWU, was kind enough to share some of his views per voice note. If you want to understand the megawatts, IPPs, and what different sources of electricity the future will hold, listen here.

  • 8 - Episode 8: The war and the markets

The Russian invasion of Ukraine is making headlines every day and there is a lot of talk about the impact on the South African economy. The main channel is through international commodity prices. Things are moving fast, so I asked an agricultural markets expert, Dr Johnny van der Merwe, for some of his views per voice note.

  • 7 - Episode 7: The devil is in the tax details

Last week the Minister of Finance Enoch Godongwana delivered the Budget Speech. There was a lot of comment and I think that most analysts thought that the Minister struck the right balance between a little extra spending, a little tax relief, and managing the budget deficit and debt burden. There are risks, but at least there is nothing we did not already know about.

From a tax perspective, a lot less was said in the budget speech and in the analysis afterwards. So Prof Krugell called a tax expert to get some insight into the issues. I asked Dirk Kotze of Tributum Consulting for some of his views per voice note.

Listen to his views on the reduction of the corporate tax rate, the tax treatment of emigrants and immigrants, and high-net-worth individuals.
