At Super Sonic Chat we love to think differently and deeply about all things music and art. Each episode we pose questions and thought experiments that celebrate music fandom with a bent towards the 90s, the experimental and the icons. Play along with our games, listen to our confessionals, join in with our challenges. Your hosts are a pair of Australian music mavens: Adrian Wauchope, major record label executive and podcast question lord. Leon Loreaux, visual artist, teacher and podcast provocateur. - 90 - Albums of Agony and Adulation
Adrian and Leon share an album with each other. Adrian loves the album he shared with Leon and the same goes for the album Leon shared with Adrian.
However, the person sharing the album has carefully chosen an album that the other will hate. The exercise is to choose an album that will cause extreme irritation and displeasure by listening to it.
The joy of this chat is hearing the different ways that each person hears the same album.
Adrian has recommended Aja by Steely Dan and Leon recommended Chance Meeting on a Dissecting Table of a Sewing Machine and an Umbrella by Nurse with Wound.

In 1977 NASA launched two Voyager spacecraft.
Each craft contained a special Golden Record.
Each record was a time capsule, containing sounds and images selected to portray the diversity of life and culture on Earth, and were intended for any intelligent extraterrestrial life form who may find them.
They also include 90 minutes of music.
Our challenge in this episode?
Imagine being tasked with selecting 10 tracks to include on the next NASA space probe. Specifically, rock music. What tracks would you choose?

Welcome to Season 5 of Super Sonic Chat!
We're back for more musings and meanderings across music fandom.
We kick off with an episode about the art of the parody song.
As kids we loved parody songs.
As teenagers we loved parody songs.
As middle aged men we still love parody songs!
I think we all know who the King of parody songs is right? So let's chat about him! The one and only Weird Al Yankovic.
What makes a great parody song?
Who are the contenders for Weird Al's title?
Leon shares the genesis of his, and probably many peoples, first love for the parody song.
Ade thinks he's found the next wave of parody artists and the challenge is to work out if they themselves know?!

This chat is about the weight of expectation.
Adrian kept having a certain band recommended to him by many people, including Leon.
'Oh you'd love them!' many people would say. 'I can't believe you've never listened to them before!'
Is Adrian the kind of person that looks like he'd love The National?

Sometimes you need to talk about the things you can't see or touch.
For millenia the role of the artist has been, in part, to touch the sublime, to transcend the every day, to access something bigger than themselves and invite us to be a part of that.
In this chat we tackle this uplifting role that music plays in our lives whilst visiting the cathedrals of the everyman: the pub and the sporting arena.
We hear about the Romanticists and sci-fi author and philosopher Aldous Huxley.
We chat about Pub Choir, singing when your team is winning, the magic of anthemic choruses as well as music for psychedelic therapy and much more.

Here's the challenge: how do you distill an artist down to 5 songs for a first time listener?
When introducing someone to an artist or band they've never heard, it can be tricky to pick a playlist.
Too many songs can overwhelm the listener - so Adrian and Leon have developed the technique of choosing five for the unfamiliar. Five songs that impart a sense of what the artist is about. Not your five favourite songs. Not the five best songs. Five songs that hint at the flavour of the artist without delivering the full course. If done correctly it should be enough to leave them wanting more if they like what they're presented with.
This is the experiment: to pick only five songs of an artist you love that are tailored to hook the uninitiated.
In this episode, your hosts put this into practice for each other.
Adrian recommends the cool, catchy compositions of Bahamas.
Leon recommends the esoteric, sonorous sounds of Beirut.
Both artists filed under the letter 'B'.
Both artists with monikers you'll find on the world map.
Featured Songs:
Bahamas
No Expectations from Earthtones, 2018
Caught Me Thinking from Barchords, 2012
Lost in the Light from Barchords, 2012
Never Again from Barchords, 2012

What makes a great love song?
By chatting about our favourites maybe we can find the common elements.
We were inspired by recording our 69th episode in the middle of February which felt like the right convergence of events to talk about songs that express a sentiment of love.
Not lust. Not fleeting moments of teenage attraction. Not a rendezvous at the local discotheque. Long lasting, true, heartfelt, dedicated love. But also the pang of love lost - or true love yet to come to fruition.

This episode is a celebration of the EP. The 'Extended Play'.
That concise collection of songs that often arrives early in an aritst's career, that delivers more than a single but never overstays its welcome. The best EP leaves you wanting more, a tasting plate that mostly sits outside the cannon of a band's work.
This week’s episode explores what makes a great EP, why a band might choose to record one and of course we chat about our favourite and most loved examples.

I wonder: do you listen to mostly music by male artists or by female artists?
We were inspired by the great Australian band Spiderbait and their recent compilation 'Sounds in the Key Of J' that celebrates all the best songs sung by their female vocalist Janet as opposed to the songs sung by their male vocalist Kram.
In a band that has two lead singers, Kram, male, drums and singer AND Janet, female, bass player and singer, you get an incredible balance of both sounds.
This compilation was conceived as a celebration and was driven by Kram who says:
“Janet's talent is so undeniable, it's easy to forget that she was a bit of a trailblazer in the blokey 90s scene.
"In the '90s, women songwriters were few and far between, and thankfully it’s not that way anymore."
Which brings us to this chat about female artists.
We wanted to tackle the topic head on, chat about our favourite female artists, about some inconsistencies in the music industry, the imbalance toward male skewed artists, some startling statistics and our thoughts about unconscious bias and what we can do to address the situation.
Of course we took on a challenge to share a favourite female artist album and get each others opinions upon our first listen.

Traun is the artist the algorithm recommends to you after you listen to Mr Bungle, Secret Chiefs 3, Fantomas and Estradasphere.Traun captured our imagination and demanded our attention with its wonderfully dense, multi-genre, and eclectic approach. We were totally absorbed by both the sounds and the world birthed by the project that includes a science fiction narrative complete with a short animation.
The music utilises string ensembles, electronic elements, heavy metal, experimental jazz, and more - often within the same song.

Does every band have a golden period that is over after ten years?
Which bands have gone on too long?
Which bands did it well and went out on top?
Leon cracks the case with a salient point about why bands end up stuck in a rut, making different versions of the same album after many years.

How fun is falling down rabbit holes when chasing new music?
This chat is about the joy of stumbling down a side alley in a town where you think you know most of the streets.
Its about new and interesting scenes that take you by surprise.
We chat about four moments in time and space that gave rise to new sounds, new fashions, new movements.
It's so fun to see how these moments changed music history forever.
We chat about:
- The new sounds emerging from kids coming of age in post-World War Two Germany that became known as Krautrock.
- New York in the fresh post-punk early 80s where artists are exploring a new noise.
- West-Africa in a post English commonwealth, post civil war 1970s where politics and funk combine with African rhythms to give birth to Afrobeat.
- The technical wizardry and incredible playing taking heavy music to an intricate and brutal new level in the Math-core scene.
Music fandom is endlessly rewarding. We hope you enjoy this Super Sonic Chat as much as we did.

Leon weighs in with his opinion and they have at it!

In this episode we tackle the famous Ship Of Theseus thought experiment and give it a Super Sonic twist.
For centuries philosophers have debated whether a ship that has all its parts replaced over time is still the same ship.
Given a music twist, we ask if a band replaces all its members over time, is it still the same band?
At the heart of the matter is the question 'what is a band'? What defines it? Songs? Sounds? Members? Contracts?
We chat about bands that survived the departure of lead singers, some that did not and others that found a new way round the issue. We even chat about a famous band that still plays and tours yet has no original members and the current members are from a completely different country than where the band formed and first found fame.

On 22nd April 2021 Leon and Adrian saw King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard play at the Enmore Theatre in Sydney, Australia. The opening act was the equally incredible Tropical F%*k Storm. We are very excited to tell you all about it.
Originally sold as a seated and masked show as per COVID restrictions, we were very excited when restrictions were lifted the week of the gig. What transpired was a good old gig, standing up shoulder to shoulder amongst the throng, getting sweaty and having a time just like the old days. Remember those?
In Australia we have had very little to no community transfer of COVID for a long time. Venues are starting to open back up to gigs and it feels excellent.

There's a moment in a band room when one member turns to the rest and asks 'Does this work?'
A new riff, a new sound, a new style.
Is it fresh and new? Dated or derivative?
What will fans think? Should an artist care?
Should a band push the envelope or stay true to what made them successful?
In this episode we explore bands that have changed sounds: the good, the bad and the ugly.
We traverse the fine line between exploration, creativity, commerce and bands as brands. We knock around the idea of fan expectation versus an artists duty to follow the muse.
Which bands have made a name around changing style?
Which bands will never change?
Which bands found success with a new style and followed that sound?
Which bands grew in skill with instruments and technology, giving light to a new found sound and experimentation?
Which bands changed style and created an abomination!

Is there anything that creates more fear and terror in a music fan than when their favourite band announces they are putting out a ‘concept album’.
Ade says 'No. It's terrifying'.
Leon says 'Hang on, I often listen to concept albums'.
Thus the debate commences.
Is it the sign of a desperately uninspired band to develop a song cycle based around a common theme?
Or is it an intelligent and creative way of creating a bigger, bolder piece of work?
We start off this chat with a challenge:

In this episode we chat about the strange, weird and very interesting instruments that musicians have taken up to create fresh and inspired new songs and sounds. Sometimes the instrument is familiar but how the artist chooses to use it is weird and wonderful.
We chat about musical worlds colliding; East meeting West, art meeting science, classical meeting modern. We chat Flying Microtonal Bananas, Blue Maqams, non-instruments, music machines, stage lightning and when orchestras get weird.

Mon, 01 Mar 2021 - 42min - 19 - When Two Colossal Rock Icons Made An Ugly Baby: a chat about collaboration
We bravely tackle what some have called 'the worst album of all time' and dissect what the hell happened!
In 2011 two colossal icons of rock spent time jamming together. Birthed from these sessions was Lulu: an album by Metallica and Lou Reed. Pitchfork called it 'especially repellent', NME called it 'baffling' and 'gruelling' yet David Bowie called it 'a masterpiece'.
At the core of this episode is a chat about the merits and necessity of artistic collaboration even when the result is divisive at best!
Collaboration is more important than just shifting units and gaining streams from a fresh fanbase.
There's much more at play here.... and we discuss both the great, and the not so great collaborations. We delve into why all collaborations are potentially useful in the broad spectrum of music appreciation. It's compelling stuff!
Please.... subject yourself to as much Lulu as you can handle prior to listening to this episode. Leon's reaction to the album is worth the price of admission alone!
