Mon, 29 Jan 2024 - 269 - Coach’s Corner – The Lizard People Don’t Want You to Listen to This!
In this no-holds-barred episode, I expose the propaganda war being waged for control over our health and independence. I invite my listeners to join me in an uprising - a rebel alliance - against the lizard people who want to keep us fat, sick, and reliant on their system.
In this episode, I tackle the blatantly misleading headlines about homegrown vegetables having a bigger carbon footprint than industrial farming. I break down the actual EPA statistics about the percent of greenhouse gases coming from cattle. Spoiler alert - it's not the main culprit. The lizard people just want you to think it is so they can control the food supply and get rich off unsustainable alternatives like lab-grown meat.
This is just one example of the all-out lies and manipulation designed to deteriorate our health - so we feed the medical-pharma industrial complex. I expose the unreal amounts of money being made by keeping us unhealthy - we're talking billions and trillions here. They encourage us to eat nutrient-poor processed foods, sit too much, and fill our homes with toxins. Then sell us medications and treatments when we inevitably get sick. It's a vicious cycle, but it keeps their pockets lined.
In this call-to-action episode, I equip my listeners with the knowledge needed to opt out of the matrix. I give practical tips for taking health into our own hands - eating real food, getting strong, becoming our own healthcare advocates. Just imagine what would happen if we all got truly healthy - it would mean trillions of dollars lost for big medicine and pharma. Now that's a rebel uprising!
I invite you to listen to the full riveting episode and join the secret Facebook group where the resistance is organizing. You can find all the links at [my website]. Say no to the lizard people and their insidious propaganda. Join me in the lean, strong rebellion - we are stronger than they want us to believe.

Fri, 26 Jan 2024 - 268 - Live Life More Fully After 50 with Adrian Jones
I’m thrilled to share my latest podcast episode with an incredibly inspiring guest, Adrian “AJ” Jones. AJ had a massive heart attack at age 47 that completely changed the trajectory of his life. What emerged was a calling to help others bring more meaning and vitality into their second act.
In my conversation with AJ, we explore that pivotal moment when he found himself suddenly confronting his mortality. The clarity it triggered sent him on a quest to discover his true purpose and live out the rest of his years to the fullest.
AJ’s message particularly resonates with me and my audience of over-50s who are searching for what’s next. His own second chance at life ignited a passion for inspiring personal growth and transformation. This led him to leave corporate finance to launch a company called MORE aimed at helping Gen Xers flourish in midlife.
In the episode, AJ shares vulnerably about the loneliness epidemic plaguing modern middle age. He’s on a mission to create caring community for people trying to navigate major life transitions like empty nesting, retirement, loss of loved ones, and career reinvention.
I loved drilling into specifics about how MORE facilitates shared experiences, small group coaching, and online connection to foster personal breakthroughs. If you, like me, feel called to live your 50s, 60s and beyond with more purpose, meaning, and fulfillment – this conversation is sure to spark some “YES” energy about reigniting your potential.
I wholeheartedly believe anyone listening will feel moved, seen, and uplifted by AJ’s wisdom around midlife metamorphosis. Please have a listen and let the inspiration wash over you! Then drop me a note – I’d love to hear your key takeaways.

Tue, 23 Jan 2024 - 267 - Coach’s Corner – How to Overcome Body Dysmorphia
In this week's episode of the Over 50 Health and Wellness Podcast, I dive into the important yet rarely discussed topic of body dysmorphia. I start by getting vulnerable and sharing my own lifelong journey with body image issues, from feeling skinny and weak as a teenager to battling weight gain and “man boobs” in my 40s.
I explain that body dysmorphia doesn’t discriminate – it can affect people of all ages and body types. As we age, it’s easy to become distressed over the natural changes happening to our bodies. But it goes beyond just vanity - our body image is connected to our self-perception and sense of belonging in the world.
First, I define body dysmorphia as a disorder where you obsess over minor or even nonexistent flaws in your appearance. I emphasize that the first step is simply recognizing when our perceptions are distorted. Then, I share practical strategies for overcoming body dysmorphia: practicing mindfulness, expressing gratitude for what our bodies can do, setting reasonable fitness goals focused on health rather than looks alone, and seeking professional help from a counselor or support group.
Next, I examine the double-edged sword of fitness. Exercise can boost mood and body confidence, but it can also trigger comparison and negative self-talk if we become preoccupied with chasing an unrealistic image. I encourage listeners to celebrate fitness accomplishments like walking farther or lifting heavier. Remind yourself that you’re not in competition with anyone but your own former self.
In closing, I reiterate that overcoming body dysmorphia is an ongoing journey. The key is self-awareness, patience, and self-compassion. I want listeners to focus on becoming the healthiest version of themselves at this stage of life. Our bodies and journeys are unique and beautiful.

Thu, 18 Jan 2024 - 266 - How to Get in the Best Shape of Your Life After 50
Today’s podcast episode is all about how to get in killer shape in your 50s, 60s, and yeah even your 70s. As someone nearly 60 myself trying to stay fit and healthy, I've picked up a thing or two on this whole healthy aging game.
And let me tell you, a lot of folks think it's all downhill after 50 when it comes to your strength and health. But from my experience? Complete BS. With the right changes to how you eat, exercise, manage stress - you can absolutely be in the best shape of your life even as you get older.
In today’s show I break it down into what I call the three pillars of strong healthy aging - movement, nutrition, and recovery. I get into real practical steps - how walking needs to be your jam, why you gotta start smashing way more protein, why tracking your food is a game-changer. Oh and real talk - chronic cardio is not your friend! I speak from experience here.
Some of the stuff that I really geeked out on is why strength training is so crucial to stay powered up as you age. And I get into the science about how our muscle fibers change as we get older. Pretty fascinating if you're a fitness nerd like me! I also talk about how you gotta stop making changes from a place of feeling bad about your body - master your mindset first y'all!
I live this stuff but even I struggled HARD with lame fitness habits and stupid fad diets myself back in the day. I made this podcast to keep it real with people looking to make changes. Whether you need an overhaul or just wanna take your health up a notch, have a listen!

Tue, 16 Jan 2024 - 265 - Coach’s Corner – Rewiring Your Brain for Lifelong Fitness
In today's episode, I'm excited to bring you another edition of the Coach's Corner, where it's just you and me diving into crucial topics about health, fitness, and mindset.
Our main focus today is the incredible power of mindset, especially in achieving and maintaining a lean, healthy body as we age. I've been deeply exploring how mindset impacts our journey towards health transformations, particularly for those of us in our fifties, sixties, and seventies. I recently came across an inspiring podcast featuring John Assaraf, who emphasized the critical difference between being interested and being committed in any life endeavor. His insights into neuroplasticity and reshaping our beliefs to match our desired outcomes resonated deeply with me.
John’s discussion underlined the essence of replacing disempowering beliefs with empowering ones. This concept aligns perfectly with our mission at The Silver Edge, where we aim to transform not just bodies, but also minds. By embracing positive affirmations and consistently challenging our self-limiting beliefs, we can literally rewire our brains for success.
I posed a challenge to you, our listeners: Are you merely interested in building and maintaining a lean, strong body, or are you committed? This question is fundamental in our journey towards lifelong health and vitality.
Moving on, I delved into the topic of the world’s best workout programs. I've teamed up with Mind Pump to bring you their MAPS workout programs, tailor-made for every fitness level and goal. From beginners to seasoned fitness enthusiasts, these programs offer structured, age-appropriate strength training regimens.
I shared some of my favorite MAPS programs, including MAPS Anabolic, MAPS Performance, and their latest addition, MAPS 40+. This program isn’t just about physical training; they incorporate lifestyle elements, supplement recommendations, and practical tips for those of us over 40 looking for sustainable health and fitness routines.
Finally, I wrapped up with a reminder about our free resources available at silveredgefree.com, including guides on nutrition, exercise, and healthy lifestyle. Remember, your future self will thank you for the choices you make today.
Thanks for tuning in to the Over 50 Health and Wellness Podcast. If you enjoyed this episode, please share it with a friend, give us a like and subscribe on YouTube, or leave a five-star review on your podcast platform. Your support is greatly appreciated. Stay strong and see you in the next episode!

Thu, 11 Jan 2024 - 264 - How to Actively Reverse Biological Age with Dr. Florence Comite
I’m thrilled to release my latest episode with a true pioneer in precision health and aging - Dr. Florence Comite. As founder of the Comite Center for Precision Medicine and Health, Dr. Comite has dedicated over 25 years to decoding the mysteries of vital longevity.
In this wide-ranging discussion, Dr. Comite blows open what’s possible in healthy lifespan extension with today’s science. We explore why health markers can start slipping as early as our 30s, the key pillars to stay resilient at any age, optimizing biomarkers vs. settling at “normal”, and truly groundbreaking interventions that can reverse biological age by years.
Dr. Comite’s vision stemmed from a simple question - if aging itself primes us for sickness, why accept decline as inevitable? She rejected the notion that genes dictate destiny and has since helped countless clients push performance levels decades beyond their birth certificates through precision testing and lifestyle optimization.
A few highlights that stuck out:
- Small hormone optimizations that supercharge energy and strength
- Peptides that grow bone, muscle and neatly heal injuries
- The way certain foods provoke a better metabolic response
- How to educate yourself and challenge doctors’ “normal”
- Cutting stress exposure at the genetic level
I was hanging on every word - while complex under the hood, Dr. Comite breaks down the science into actionable takeaways we can all understand and benefit from.
The future she describes is one where being vibrant at 100 is the rule, not the exception. We aren’t there yet, but her center offers an inspiring glimpse. Imagine owning your health so completely that biological age reversal is measurable and trackable!
Dr. Comite herself is a testament to walking the walk - while “chronologically gifted”, she has the fitness and energy of someone decades younger. It was a privilege to learn from such a pioneer in the emerging disciplines around longevity.

Tue, 09 Jan 2024 - 263 - Coach’s Corner – It’s Time to Level Up!
I started today’s episode by giving you folks the “state of the Over 50 Health & Welnesss Show,” and that led me to my big ask of all of YOU, the listeners – I want YOU to be my Program Director! I want to know what you want in 2024 and beyond – guests, topics, release frequency etc.
Our main topic today is why 2024 should be the year you LEVEL UP your health and fitness game. When I first started, my messaging was hardcore about getting into the best shape of your life. That attracted mostly people who were already beasts.
So I changed my messaging to focus more on my own health struggles and journey from overweight and unhealthy to finding resources like The Barbell Prescription. I started speaking to THAT audience – people looking for help getting started on getting healthy. And that really resonated and changed my business.
But recently I noticed some clients coming to us who were already pretty fit and healthy but felt stuck. They wanted help LEVELING UP – hitting new PRs, losing those last few pounds, improving sports performance, etc.
So I announced the launch of a new Level Up Performance Nutrition coaching program just for those types of clients who need a custom nutrition plan but already have dialed in workouts and health.
I wrapped up by challenging all listeners to make 2024 the year you LEVEL UP your health and fitness, no matter your starting point. Stay strong!
Email me what you want to hear on this podcast in 2024 – what guests, topics, how many podcasts a week, what you like, don’t like, etc.

Fri, 05 Jan 2024 - 262 - Record Setting Fitness Has No Age Limit with Kim Rahir
Recently, I had the honor of interviewing a truly remarkable woman on my podcast - Kim Rahir, a 60-year-old competitive Olympic weightlifter. Kim’s incredible journey began in her late forties when she was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis (MS). Despite her neurologist’s warnings to “take it slow,” Kim walked straight from his office into the gym, determined to reclaim power over her body.
What began as a small act of defiance soon transformed into a lifelong passion. As Kim devoted herself to weight training, she grew measurably stronger and healthier, astonishing her doctors with her recovery. They credited her dedication to strength training and proper nutrition with successfully managing her MS when other options had failed. By her early fifties, Kim was getting strong and learning Olympic lifts under an experienced coach.
Now, just over a decade later, Kim is redefining what is physically possible after 50. Last year, at age 60, she won a silver medal in Olympic weightlifting at the European Masters Championship.
During our podcast interview, Kim eloquently dispelled prevailing myths surrounding age and athleticism. With her dedication to diet and intense training, she is living proof that maintaining supreme fitness well into retirement age is achievable. Her energy and lust for life moved me deeply. She encouraged my audience to ignore the doubters and recognize that transformative growth remains possible at any age.
At 60, as she trains for upcoming international contests, Kim Rahir exemplifies grace, wisdom, and mighty strength - both inner and outer. Hers is the story not of youthful potential but of a maturity that empowers and enriches our second acts.

Tue, 02 Jan 2024 - 261 - Coach’s Corner – The Top 5 Worst Fitness Trends of 2023
In this episode, we're going to wrap up 2023 with a special Coach's Corner segment, where I'll be sharing my thoughts on the top five over-hyped fitness and nutrition trends of the year.
Before diving into that, I want to remind you about our one-on-one personalized nutrition, exercise, and lifestyle coaching services. If you're over 50 and looking to optimize your health, shed some fat, and build lean muscle, now is the perfect time to get started. As of December 28th, 2023, we have eight coaching slots available for January, so don't hesitate to reach out!
Now, let’s tackle the main content of today’s episode - the top five worst fitness trends of 2023. I’ve carefully selected these trends based on their mainstream popularity and the potential misinformation surrounding them. Here they are:
1. Plant-Based Diets: This trend is not about the diet itself but the extreme claims associated with it, like the demonization of meat consumption. It’s important to understand that a balanced diet is key, and eliminating any food group entirely can lead to nutritional deficiencies.
2. The Carnivore Diet: The exact opposite of a plant-based diet, this one promotes eating exclusively animal products. While it might work for some, it lacks balance and can be unsustainable in the long term.
3. Intermittent Fasting: Often marketed as a quick fix for various health issues, intermittent fasting isn't the magical solution it's sometimes made out to be. While it can be beneficial in some contexts, it's not a one-size-fits-all approach, especially for those over 50.
4. Prescription Fat Loss Drugs: Drugs like Ozempic and Wegovy have gained popularity for weight loss, but they don’t encourage healthy habits. It's essential to focus on sustainable lifestyle changes rather than relying on medication for weight loss.
5. Cold Plunges: Gaining immense popularity, cold plunges are often overhyped. While they have benefits, they are not a substitute for foundational health practices like proper nutrition and exercise.
In summary, my advice for the coming year is to focus on the basics: eat real food, exercise regularly, manage stress, and get quality sleep. Avoid getting distracted by these flashy trends that promise quick results but don’t deliver long-term health benefits.
As we say goodbye to 2023, I wish you all a happy and healthy new year. Remember, our goal at The Silver Edge is to help you become the healthiest, strongest, and most vital version of yourself.

Thu, 28 Dec 2023 - 260 - Classic Rewind - Nature Wants You to be Fat with Dr. Richard Johnson
I recently had the incredible opportunity to chat with Dr. Richard Johnson, a renowned professor of medicine at the University of Colorado, on our show. We dived deep into the surprising science behind weight gain and the strategies to prevent and reverse it, especially pertinent to those of us over 50.
Dr. Johnson’s insights were nothing short of eye-opening. His decades of research into obesity, diabetes, and diet have culminated in fascinating discoveries, particularly around the role of sugar – and more specifically, fructose – in our diets.
One key takeaway from our conversation was the critical role sugar plays in activating what Dr. Johnson refers to as the "survival switch." This mechanism, deeply ingrained in our biology, was once a survival tool but has now turned against us in an age of abundant food. The rapid consumption of high-fructose foods, especially sugary beverages, triggers this switch, leading to a cascade of metabolic changes that promote fat storage and hunger.
Dr. Johnson also highlighted the importance of hydration in managing weight and overall health. Surprisingly, most people with obesity tend to be dehydrated. Regular water intake can significantly impact your metabolic health, an easy yet powerful habit to adopt.
But it's not all about what you should avoid. Dr. Johnson emphasized the benefits of natural fruits, good fats (like omega-3 fatty acids), and even coffee. The key is moderation and understanding how these foods interact with our bodies.
Exercise, too, was a major point of discussion. Dr. Johnson’s perspective on exercise goes beyond just burning calories. He stresses its role in improving mitochondrial health and thereby, our overall energy and metabolism. As someone passionate about fitness and health, I couldn't agree more with the importance of regular exercise, not just for weight management but for our overall vitality.
One aspect of our talk that particularly struck me was the interconnectedness of various health factors. From stress and sleep to diet and exercise, each element plays a crucial role in maintaining optimal health, especially as we age.
I invite you to listen to this enlightening episode with Dr. Richard Johnson. Whether you're looking to lose weight, improve your health, or simply gain a deeper understanding of your body, this episode is packed with valuable insights.
Remember, it’s never too late to make a change. You can find the full episode and additional resources over at silverridgefitness.com/episode111. And don't forget to subscribe and follow our podcast for more insightful conversations like this one.

Tue, 26 Dec 2023 - 259 - Coach's Corner Classic Rewind - How to Fix a Broken Metabolism
I'm excited to share some highlights and personal insights from this Classic Rewind. In this episode, we take a closer look at two crucial topics that are particularly close to my heart: metabolism and knee pain management. Let me walk you through what makes this episode special and why I believe it's a must-listen for anyone looking to improve their health and wellness, especially as we age.
Understanding and Repairing Metabolism
In this episode, I explore the intricate world of metabolism, inspired by the story of Helen, a 58-year-old real estate broker struggling with weight loss, stress, and sleep deprivation. This segment is close to me as it echoes the challenges many of us face in maintaining a healthy metabolism as we age.
My Key Takeaways:
Importance of Hydration and Balanced Nutrition: I emphasize the significance of staying hydrated and consuming a diet rich in protein. These are foundational steps to rejuvenate a sluggish metabolism.
Stress Management and Quality Sleep: I discuss strategies to manage stress and improve sleep quality. Our mental well-being is deeply intertwined with our physical health, and these aspects are critical for metabolic balance.
Exercise Recommendations: I advocate for a balanced approach to exercise, focusing on strength training rather than excessive cardio. This is essential for sustaining muscle mass and enhancing metabolic health.
Addressing Knee Pain During Squats
Another segment of the podcast that I’m particularly passionate about is addressing the common issue of knee pain during squats. I challenge the misconception of avoiding squats and instead provide actionable advice to strengthen the hip area to alleviate knee pain.
My Personal Insights:
Hip Weakness as a Culprit: Understanding that knee pain often originates from hip weakness and immobility is a game-changer. It’s important to tackle the root cause rather than just the symptoms.
Effective Rehab Exercises: I share detailed instructions for rehab exercises like the 90-90 stretch, McGill airplane, and lateral banded walks. These exercises can significantly improve knee health and overall mobility.
Why This Episode Is Important
What I love about this episode is the holistic approach we take towards health and wellness. It’s not just about the physical aspects; we delve into emotional and psychological factors that significantly impact our fitness journey. My aim is to empower you with knowledge and practical tips to make informed decisions about your health.

Thu, 21 Dec 2023 - 258 - Classic Rewind - Why Diets Fail with Dr. David Prologo
This episode originally aired back in August 2022, but as you’ll soon hear, it’s worth a re-listen!
I had the opportunity to interview Dr. David Prologo. Dr. Prologo brings a unique perspective as an interventional radiologist, obesity medicine specialist, and author of the book "The Catching Point Transformation." In our interview, he explained that the main reason diets fail is because they go against our body's natural survival mechanisms. When we abruptly cut calories or ramp up exercise, our bodies react by slowing metabolism, increasing hunger signals, and doing whatever it takes to hold on to fat stores.
Instead, Dr. Prologo advocates for taking time upfront to change your body composition and improve your exercise capacity. This "investment period" allows your body to metabolically adapt so that weight loss efforts don't feel like constant deprivation. He uses the analogy of a flower - watering it more won't make it bloom faster. You first need to give it sunlight and time to grow stronger roots.
I was fascinated to learn from Dr. Prologo that changes to the body can actually cause beneficial changes in the brain, improving motivation and healthy behaviors. He calls this "retrograde neuroplasticity." Things like getting better sleep, building muscle, and boosting nutrition provide positive feedback loops. Over time, your preferences shift so that healthy choices become rewarding and sustainable.
If you've struggled to lose weight and keep it off, I highly recommend listening to this interview. Dr. Prologo provides an empowering message - with the right strategy centered on your unique starting point, you absolutely can transform your body composition for good.

Tue, 19 Dec 2023 - 257 - Coach's Corner - Setting Yourself Up for Health Success
Welcome to another episode of the Silver Edge Fitness podcast! In today's Coaches Corner episode, I shared my tips for setting impactful and achievable health-related New Year's resolutions.
I started out by reflecting on my own past failed resolutions, admitting I've made some pretty audacious ones over the years that were destined to fail. I know many can relate to starting off the new year highly motivated to finally get in shape or eat healthier, only to fall back into old habits by February.
I then dove into reasons why resolutions often fail - they're too ambitious, we're not mentally ready to change, we don't understand our underlying motivations, we lack a solid plan and accountability system. I also discussed some deeper psychological barriers from making positive change, like believing we're undeserving or fearing failure.
Next, I explained the SMART goal framework to set specific, measurable, achievable, relevant and time-bound goals. I encouraged listeners to make resolutions focused on smaller, incremental changes over a shorter timeframe rather than huge, intimidating year-long goals.
When it comes to nutrition resolutions targeting weight or fat loss, I urged rethinking the fixation on hitting a certain number on the scale. Instead, I advised focusing on metrics like body fat percentage or lean muscle gain. I suggested resolutions around increasing protein intake, entering a "metabolic restoration" phase before starting a diet, and establishing healthier eating habits like mindful eating, meal prepping, staying hydrated, and not snacking after dinner.
On the exercise front, I recommended a simple regimen of full-body strength training 3 days a week and starting with a daily step goal based on your current baseline activity. I emphasized keeping things sustainable rather than intense cardio blasts or bootcamp workouts.
I wrapped up the show by stressing mindset and motivation as key to long-term success. While motivation helps kick things off, it fades quickly. By focusing on becoming the type of person who relishes healthy behaviors and listening to your "why", you're much more likely to stick with resolutions. I also encouraged being compassionate with ourselves - progress isn't linear and setbacks will happen. The most important thing is getting back on track.
I'm excited for you to put these tips into action in the new year! Be sure to check out the resources below for guides to help with your fitness journey.

Fri, 15 Dec 2023 - 256 - Finding Community in an Age of Disconnection with Florence Ann Romano
Isolation, loneliness, depression - these words have become all too common lately. As we emerge from a global pandemic that upended life as we knew it, many of us are struggling to reconnect and find a sense of community. Personally, I too have felt the strain on relationships and a yearning for more meaningful social bonds.
That's why I'm so excited for my latest podcast episode where I interview Florence Ann Romano, an expert on building social connections. She wrote the book "Build Your Village: A Guide to Finding Joy and Community in Every Stage of Life" – and she’s the perfect person to help us rebuild our villages!
In this interview, Florence Ann and I have a real heart-to-heart on why community matters, the different relationship "archetypes" people embody, and actionable tips to strengthen old ties or form new ones. She shares vulnerable stories from her own life that illustrate core concepts, bringing such warmth and compassion to the conversation.
A few key insights that stuck out:
- Loneliness can be as damaging to health as smoking 15 cigarettes a day. Community is essential medicine.
- We often focus selfishly on "what can others do for me" versus "how can I show up for them." Shift your mindset.
- Join groups and causes aligned to your values.
I walked away feeling hopeful and equipped to proactively nourish my relationships and connections. The timing of this message truly couldn't be better. I hope you'll tune into this soul-filling discussion with incredible wisdom from Florence Ann's journey. Get ready to start rebuilding your village!

Tue, 12 Dec 2023 - 255 - Coach’s Corner – A Beginner’s Guide to Tracking Calories
In this week's episode of the Coaches Corner podcast, I tackle the topic of calorie tracking - who should do it, why it can be useful, and exactly how to get started.
I open the show explaining what calorie tracking means - essentially weighing, measuring, and recording everything you eat and drink to gain insights into your nutrition. While not absolutely necessary, calorie tracking can provide helpful information to guide your health and fitness journey.
First, I cover who should and should not track calories. Tracking can be useful for those who have never done it before to gain awareness of serving sizes and calorie intake. It can also help those with more aggressive body composition goals dial in their nutrition. However, tracking is not advised for those with a history of disordered eating.
Next, I explain several reasons why calorie tracking can be beneficial:
It teaches you accurate serving sizes. Without measuring food, most people don't have an accurate sense of portion sizes It reveals patterns in your eating behaviors, like major differences between weekday and weekend eating. It helps you understand your macro- and micro-nutrient intake. Tracking shows how much protein, carbs, fat, fiber, vitamins and more that you are actually consuming. It provides a baseline to create a nutrition plan to reach your goals. Understanding your starting point is key for mapping out where you want to go.I then give a tutorial on how to start tracking, beginning with obtaining basic kitchen tools like a food scale, measuring cups and spoons. I demonstrate how to enter various foods into MyFitnessPal step-by-step. I also provide tips for tracking restaurant meals by finding comparable items in the database. The key is not to overcomplicate it - just get a general sense of your calorie and macro intake.
In closing, I note that apps will provide calorie recommendations based on your stats and goals. But I caution not to follow this advice blindly, emphasizing the importance of optimizing your metabolism before considering a diet phase.
I share that personally, I track intermittently depending on my current goals. My co-host Monica tracks very consistently. There is no one-size-fits-all approach - find what works best for your needs and fitness objectives.
I wrap up by inviting listeners to download our free guide Calorie Tracking 101 for more details on getting started with tracking your nutrition.

Thu, 07 Dec 2023 - 254 - Breaking Free from Food Addiction with Dr. Susan Peirce Thompson
I'm so excited to share my latest podcast episode with all of you! I had the honor of interviewing Dr. Susan Peirce Thompson, a neuroscientist and founder of the Bright Line Eating program.
In this incredibly insightful conversation, Susan peeled back the layers on the science behind food addiction and offered a blueprint for finding freedom. She shared her own story of battling disordered eating for years before finally discovering the key to sustainable weight loss.
I was blown away as Susan explained how modern processed foods can truly hijack the brain's reward system, flooding it with dopamine and triggering the same addictive pathways as drugs. This helps explain why so many of us feel trapped in cycles of overeating certain foods and yet unable to stop.
The good news is Susan has developed a science-based program called Bright Line Eating that gives clear guidance on what to eat and, just as importantly, how to rewire your brain to overcome food obsession. She's helped hundreds of thousands of people break free from food addiction and transform their health.
I learned so much from hearing Susan's story and expertise. This conversation is an absolute must-listen if you feel controlled by food rather than being in control of it. Tune in to understand yourself on a deeper level and start your own journey towards food freedom!
Please share this episode with anyone you know who might benefit from learning about overcoming chronic dieting and disordered eating habits. I sincerely hope this information helps spark positive change in your life

Tue, 05 Dec 2023 - 253 - Coach’s Corner – Is Your Workout Program Keeping You Fat?
In this week's Coach's Corner episode, I want to discuss why your current exercise routine may actually be hindering your fat loss efforts instead of helping. I share the story of two overweight guys I see at my gym who workout hard but never seem to lose weight or build muscle. I explain the difference between strength training and cardio/conditioning workouts and why the latter causes your metabolism to adapt and burn fewer calories over time. I argue you need strength training to build metabolically expensive lean muscle mass.
I describe the usual routine of these two guys - some kind of intense circuit training with constant movement and little rest. While they're clearly putting in lots of effort, their body composition remains unchanged months later. I propose that if their goal is to lose abdominal fat and finally look fit, their workout regimen is better categorized as challenging cardio rather than true strength training.
The key distinction is the rest periods. True strength training works your fast twitch muscle fibers which are powerful but have little endurance. So you need longer rest intervals of 60-90 seconds between sets to allow them to briefly recover before the next intense burst. Cardio and conditioning routines preferentially use slow twitch fibers that can keep going for longer periods.
As we age, we lose more metabolically expensive fast twitch fibers. Our bodies are highly adaptive and efficient, meaning cardio causes us to burn fewer calories over time as we get better at those movements. Also, intense cardio paired with dieting triggers emergency metabolic adaptations for survival, making it harder to lose fat.
I explain how I would program these two guys if they want to finally achieve their goals: stop circuit training, walk for cardio, focus on full body strength training workouts 3 days a week with compound lifts at moderate volumes and intensities. I'd have them track progress, apply progressive overload, rest 60-90 seconds between sets, eat sufficient protein, and cycle calories.
In closing, I urge listeners not to fear strength training. Muscle is the organ of longevity and a healthy metabolism. I provide my email for anyone wanting help getting started with a beginner's strength routine. Check the show notes for useful links and info on how to support the podcast.

Thu, 30 Nov 2023 - 252 - Turn Back Your Biological Clock with Chris Mirable
I’m thrilled to share my latest podcast episode where I interview biohacker Chris Mirable, who is literally aging in reverse – he’s aging 31% slower than normal. How? Through science-backed lifestyle tweaks and longevity hacks that are available to us all.
Chris shares his personal story of motivation. After surviving a brain tumor at 16 that made him acutely aware of his mortality, Chris founded the public benefit company NOVOS. NOVOS creates consumer biotech products targeting the 12 hallmarks of aging, with ingredients shown to reduce DNA damage, inflammation, and senescent cells while improving skin health and longevity biomarkers.
On the show, Chris does a deep dive into each of these biological causes of aging, explaining what they are and actionable steps you can take to combat them. We cover everything from nutrition to supplements to ideal exercise, sleep, and stress management for longevity. I walk away from this discussion feeling truly empowered that we can take control of our healthspan and lifespan.
Chris shatters the myth that only the wealthy can afford these types of longevity interventions. His personal results exceed what some tech billionaires pay millions for annually. He shares the ideal intermittent fasting routine for those over 50 and the ideal ratio of strength training to cardio for longevity.
If you’re interested in living younger for longer, this knowledge-packed episode is one you simply can’t miss. Get ready to take notes as Chris provides the blueprint to turn back your biological clock.

Wed, 29 Nov 2023 - 251 - Coach’s Corner - Embracing Gratitude for Lifelong Wellness
Welcome back, friends! I hope all my American listeners enjoyed a wonderful Thanksgiving. I wanted to do a special solo "Coach's Corner" episode today focusing on gratitude and how it impacts our health as we age.
I've actually covered gratitude in a few past episodes that are worth mentioning again:
- Back in March 2021, I interviewed Debbie Waynez and we talked about how intentional gratitude helped her journey from profound grief to absolute joy. That episode is titled "Journey From Heartbreak to Joy."
https://silveredgefitness.com/episode44/
- And just last month, I had an enlightening chat with Dr. Greg Hamer about finding peace and purpose through gratitude even during chaotic times. That episode was called "Finding Peace in Purpose Through Gratitude."
https://silveredgefitness.com/242-2/
So gratitude is a recurring theme on this podcast because I firmly believe embracing gratitude is truly life changing. Let's explore why it's so critical to our health and how we can make it a daily practice.
The Transformative Power of Gratitude
- Gratitude goes far beyond just saying thanks - it's a state of appreciation and noticing the blessings we do have.
- Research shows grateful people suffer less aches and pains, report better health, tend to sleep better at night, and have decreased feelings of anxiety, frustration and envy.
- Gratitude helps us better weather life's inevitable ups and downs with resilience, self-worth and deep spiritual connectivity.
3 Ways to Build a Gratitude Practice
1. Keep a Gratitude Journal
- Take a few minutes each day to write down a short list of things you're grateful for. The key is consistency with this exercise.
- Try the 30 Day Challenge where you write down 3 new things you're grateful for every single day. It gets harder as the days go on, which builds your awareness.
2. Incorporate Gratitude Meditation/Prayer
- No need for structured meditation - take brief moments during your day to pause and appreciate things around you.
- Prayer works too! Personally I start and end each day with short gratitude prayers which grounds me and helps me sleep.
3. Express Gratitude to Others
- Tell people in your life what they mean to you. Write thank you notes. Verbal appreciation strengthens relationships.
- There are also great gratitude apps available with prompts and reminders. And leverage technology to build community around gratitude.
Remember it takes consistency and you will have ups and downs. But pick one or two gratitude practices that work for you and give them an honest try. I promise you will start to notice positive changes!
Gratitude transforms lives in profound ways. I hope you'll join me on this journey toward better health and deeper fulfillment. We have so much to be thankful for, my friends.
I appreciate YOU for listening! Let's practice the spirit of Thanksgiving all year round. Stay grateful out there!

Wed, 22 Nov 2023 - 250 - Illuminating Answers to Your Red-Light Therapy Questions with Dr. Carl Rothschild
I recently had the privilege of interviewing Dr. Carl Rothschild, one of the leading experts in the world on red light therapy. This was such an eye-opening conversation and I’m excited to share it with all of you!
For those not familiar, red light therapy involves exposing the body to certain wavelengths of red and near-infrared light. What’s simply amazing is the incredible healing benefits this can provide.
Dr. Rothschild explains how red light therapy can help improve mitochondrial function at the cellular level. This is why it may help with such a diverse array of health conditions - from arthritis, to Parkinson’s, to chronic fatigue and more. He shared story after story of patients who experienced dramatic improvements in diseases they had suffered with for years.
We also discussed the potential of red light therapy for anti-aging and aesthetic benefits. Dr. Rothschild says he has seen hair regrowth in balding patients, eliminated skin conditions like eczema and psoriasis, and significant fat loss by improving lymphatic drainage.
In this interview, you’ll learn exactly how red light therapy works, what to look for in legitimate high-quality devices (not just cheap knock-offs), and how to find a provider in your area that offers this cutting-edge treatment.
Dr. Rothschild also shares an insightful perspective on why more mainstream medicine and big pharma tend to resist these types of alternative therapies that actually cure patients, rather than manage symptoms with expensive medications.
I was thoroughly impressed by Dr. Rothschild’s breadth of knowledge and unwavering dedication to helping patients achieve true healing. I think you’ll find this a truly fascinating interview.

Tue, 26 May 2020 - 247 - Your Prescription for Lifelong Healthy Knees and Shoulders with Dr. Alan Reznik
I'm so excited to share my latest podcast episode featuring renowned orthopedic surgeon Dr. Alan Reznik. As someone who is passionate about healthy aging, I was thrilled to have the chance to pick Dr. Reznik's brain about how to keep our bodies feeling young and vital.
In this info-packed discussion, Dr. Reznik covers everything you need to know about caring for two of the most important joints in our bodies - the knees and shoulders. With decades of experience performing surgeries and treating injuries, he shares his top advice for avoiding problems and managing pain. What I loved is that Dr. Reznik explains things in a way anyone can understand, with lots of vivid analogies that really drive his points home.
A few highlights from our conversation:
- The unexpected ways poor posture can lead to shoulder and rotator cuff issues
- Dr. Reznik's "sternum to the sun" tip for automatically improving posture
- How to strengthen the small but crucial rotator cuff muscles
- The key role nutrition, exercise and sleep play in joint health
- When to see a specialist versus trying physical therapy
- Cutting-edge treatments like stem cells and 3D printing
- How to be a savvy health care consumer and get the care you need
I was fascinated to learn from Dr. Reznik that our bones and joints actually reform based on the stresses and demands we place on them. That means we have more influence than we might think over their strength and resilience as we age. His holistic view of the body and how everything interconnects was truly enlightening.
If you or a loved one deal with ongoing shoulder or knee issues, this episode is mandatory listening. And the advice can help anyone be proactive about musculoskeletal health going forward. Please check it out and let me know what you think!

Tue, 14 Nov 2023 - 246 - Coach’s Corner – The Over 50 Guide to Beginning Strength Training
In this week's Coach's Corner, I'm talking all about getting started with strength training after 50.
I began this episode by discussing why strength training is so important as we age. Building muscle helps optimize our metabolism, protects us against injury, extends our life expectancy, and makes us "harder to kill" as Mark Rippetoe likes to say. Strength training is also your fat-burning friend since adding muscle revs up your metabolism and turns you into a fat burning machine. Other benefits of strength training include improving overall health, bone density, sleep quality, hormonal profile, libido, and overall quality of life. The bottom line - you're never too old to start strength training!
Next, I got into the details of how to start strength training for beginners over 50. I talked about proper "dosing" of strength training by finding the right balance of training frequency, intensity, and volume. For most beginners, I recommend full body workouts 3 days per week, 45-60 minutes per workout, stopping short of technical failure, and keeping intensity around a 7-8 on the Rate of Perceived Exertion scale.
I also covered some of the basics like sets, reps and rest periods. For beginners, I suggest 3 sets of 8-12 reps for each exercise, with 1-2 minutes of rest between sets. We want to focus on compound lifts like squats, deadlifts, presses, and rows, but also incorporate some isolation moves. And we always need a proper warm-up before diving into the workout!
To demonstrate how to put together a beginner strength routine, I provided a sample 3 day full body workout plan with specific exercises. I also noted that you don't need a gym to get started - you can begin with bands, dumbbells, or bodyweight at home. Just focus on progressively overloading over time.
I know that was a lot of info packed into a short episode! My best advice is to not overthink it and just get started. Download the workout anywhere guide and get some bands if needed. And check out the app I mentioned which has tons of guided programs. If you want to lose weight, get healthy, reclaim your sexy, and be an all-around over 50 badass, start strength training today!

Thu, 09 Nov 2023 - 245 - Finding Peace and Purpose Through Gratitude with Dr. Greg Hammer
I'm thrilled to share my recent conversation with Dr. Greg Hammer. Dr. Hammer is a pediatric anesthesiologist and professor at Stanford who has become a leading expert on burnout, wellness, and happiness practices.
In this inspiring discussion, we covered a lot of ground on how we can overcome negativity bias and chronic stress to live with more gratitude, joy, and purpose day-to-day. Dr. Hammer introduced the GAIN method - a powerful mindfulness routine that takes just minutes but can rewire your brain for positivity if practiced daily.
Here were some of my biggest takeaways from our talk:
- We all tend to have a negativity bias thanks to our evolutionary wiring and get distracted from the miracle of each moment. Simple gratitude practices can retrain our brains.
- Acceptance is key - if we can discern what we can and cannot change, we avoid useless suffering. Living in the present requires letting go of judging and resisting.
- Intention grounds us in purposeful action steps, however small, that over time transform our thinking. Effort compounds.
- There is an upward spiral between daily mindfulness habits, open-heartedness, and connection to something larger than ourselves. Spirituality and science meet in the middle.
I highly recommend tuning in to hear the full discussion and Dr. Hammer's insights on how we can gain more lightness and joy, even during stressful times. By being mindful each day, we can overcome our biologically engrained pessimism and discover newfound happiness and gratitude.
The practical steps covered here can help anyone - especially if you're over 50 and realizing time is precious. I'm committed to making the GAIN routine part of my daily ritual going forward. Join me in looking at life through a lens of gratitude!

Tue, 07 Nov 2023 - 244 - Coach’s Corner – Rethinking How We Measure Health
Welcome back to another episode of the Coach's Corner on the Over 50 Health and Wellness Podcast. In today's solo episode, I want to take a deeper look at the “healthy at any size” movement that’s becoming so popular today.
I'll start by saying that there's no place for fat-shaming or judging people by their body size. We should respect and honor people of all shapes and sizes. However, the “healthy at any size” notion that we can be equally healthy at any weight is misleading and dangerous.
To understand why, we first need to look at how we define and measure health. The scale and BMI are poor indicators on their own. Two people can weigh the same but have vastly different body compositions. A better way to look at health is body fat percentage and muscle mass.
The takeaway: we have less of an obesity problem than a lack of muscle problem. Building strength, especially as we age, is vital for health. That’s why I coach over-50s to get strong while maintaining a reasonable body fat percentage.
I hope this episode has given you a balanced perspective on health and body size. What matters most is loving and respecting ourselves and others while making empowered choices for our wellbeing.

Fri, 03 Nov 2023 - 243 - How to Improve Your Health & Longevity with Regenerative Medicine featuring Dr. Jeffrey Gross
I recently had the pleasure of speaking with Dr. Jeffrey Gross, a fascinating guest who is on the cutting edge of regenerative medicine and biohacking. Dr. Gross joined me on The Over 50 Health & Wellness Podcast to discuss how we can use science and technology to optimize our health.
Dr. Gross is a board-certified neurological surgeon with over 25 years of experience helping patients avoid unnecessary surgeries. More recently, he has focused on anti-aging strategies and founded ReCELLebrate Health to provide regenerative therapies.
On the podcast, Dr. Gross outlined some incredible innovations that left my mind blown! We covered emerging treatments like:
- PRP (platelet rich plasma) injections
- Stem cell therapies
- Exosome treatments
He explained how these treatments utilize the body’s own healing systems to reduce inflammation, repair joints, and even turn back aging. I was fascinated to learn how a simple IV infusion of something called “extracellular vesicles” can make people feel energized, refreshed, and reduce aches and pains.
According to Dr. Gross, the science shows these regenerative treatments can potentially help with conditions ranging from arthritis to neurological diseases to cosmetic anti-aging. While not currently approved by the FDA, they are widely available, especially for biohackers and athletes looking for an edge.
Listen to this trailblazing episode for a glimpse into the exciting possibilities of biohacking your health for longevity! Dr. Gross provides an expert perspective on how these cutting-edge therapies work and what the future may hold as the research continues to progress.
If overcoming health challenges and living longer through science sounds compelling, you won’t want to miss this episode!

Tue, 31 Oct 2023 - 242 - Coach’s Corner - What to Do After You're Done Dieting
In this episode, I talk about the post-diet phase and what you should do after finishing a diet to keep the weight off long-term. I explain that most people regain the weight after a diet because they simply go back to their old eating habits. I outline a proper post-diet protocol focused on slowly reverse dieting to build metabolic capacity and muscle – without fat regain.
Show Notes:
- Most people who lose weight end up regaining it because they don't follow proper post-diet protocols. Studies show up to 97% of people regain the weight they lost from dieting.
- After finishing a diet, most people pat themselves on the back and then go back to eating exactly like they did before the diet. This inevitably leads to regaining the lost weight, and often even more weight on top of that.
- Proper post-diet protocol should focus on slowly reverse dieting to build back up metabolic capacity and muscle. This is key for long-term fat loss and maintenance.
- In the pre-diet phase, the focus was on optimizing metabolism by building muscle. In the diet phase, the focus shifted to losing fat while maintaining the new muscle mass.
- In the post-diet phase, the emphasis returns to building muscle and metabolic capacity through conservative reverse dieting.
- Reverse dieting means slowly adding back calories each week, usually starting with adding back just 10% of your current calories.
- The more concerned you are with regaining weight, the slower you should reverse diet. Be patient and add calories back conservatively.
- As you add calories back, the goal is to optimize metabolism again and regain the muscle lost during the diet. This allows you to eat more food without gaining fat.
- End the post-diet phase eating enough food that your metabolism can support. For men this is usually around 2,800-3,000 calories at a minimum.
- Creating healthy, sustainable habits around nutrition and exercise is key for lifelong success. Fall in love with the process of nourishing your body, not just the end results.
- Simple, quick diet fixes are easy to sell but not sustainable long-term. Proper muscle building and metabolism optimization is more nuanced but sets you up for lifelong success.

Fri, 27 Oct 2023 - 241 - Big Boys Don't Cry with Jeremy Grater & Zach Tucker
As men, we’re taught from an early age to “toughen up” and not talk about our feelings. But burying our emotions and trauma doesn’t make them go away – it usually just leads to more struggle down the road. I should know, because I've been there myself.
After collapsing one day from stress and burnout, I realized I needed to make some big changes in my life. I started re-evaluating my mental health and made the courageous decision to get help. Along the way, I’ve learned that real change doesn’t happen overnight – it takes small, consistent steps in the right direction.
That’s why I’m so excited about my latest podcast episode, where I chat with two guys who have walked the walk when it comes to prioritizing mental fitness. Neither Jeremy nor Zach consider themselves gurus; they’re simply a few steps ahead on the path and hoping to light the way for others.
These dads and husbands openly share their stories of trauma and addiction, and the little lifelines that helped them slowly turn things around - things like therapy, meditation, exercise and community. It wasn’t easy, and they still have bad days, but they persevered because they knew they owed it to themselves and their families.
I found so much of my own story reflected in their journeys, and I know you will too. Jeremy and Zach are putting in the work so we don't have to struggle alone. If you’re looking for motivation and real talk about men’s mental health, don’t miss this game-changing episode. The struggle is real, but there is hope.

Tue, 24 Oct 2023 - 240 - Coach's Corner - Diet Strategies for Healthy Sustainable Fat Loss
Welcome back to another episode of the Over 50 Health and Wellness podcast! In this week's Coach's Corner, I'm going to continue our three-part series on strategies for healthy and sustainable weight loss by discussing the diet phase. Last week, we covered the pre-diet phase which focused on optimizing your metabolism before starting a diet. If you haven't listened to that episode, I highly recommend you go back and do so before diving into today's topic.
To kick things off, I want to share a powerful client testimonial we recently received from Frankie, one of the members of our community. Frankie came to us hoping to lose 10 pounds but after 6 months she had only lost 6 pounds. However, during that time she increased her protein intake, started strength training, and increased her calories from 1600 to 2300 per day. As a result, she is now in her diet phase eating 1700 calories and has already lost 6 more pounds. Even more impressively, she is now fitting into clothes she hasn't worn in 7 years!
This demonstrates two key things. First, the number on the scale doesn't tell the whole story. Frankie gained muscle during the pre-diet phase which led to positive changes in her body composition. Second, by optimizing her metabolism first, she can now eat in a deficit during her diet phase while still consuming more calories than when she started with us. This metabolic repair is critical for sustainable fat loss.
When it comes to determining your calorie deficits for the diet phase, a good rule of thumb is to cut 20-25% of your maintenance calories. For Frankie, that meant going from 2300 down to 1700 calories per day. I recommend keeping your diet phase fairly short - around 4-6 weeks - because extended periods in a deficit can be counterproductive.
During the diet phase, keep prioritizing protein at 0.7-1g per pound of ideal body weight. The key is continuing your strength training workouts to preserve your hard-earned muscle. For newer lifters, you may even experience "body recomposition" by losing fat and gaining muscle at the same time!
You'll know it's time to end your diet phase when your weight loss plateaus for 1-2 weeks. At that point, you can either take an additional calorie cut if you still have room or you can start the reverse diet process which I'll cover next week. The main signs that it's definitely time to switch from fat loss back to metabolic rebuilding are: increased hunger, irritability, low energy, poor sleep, and reduced libido.
Remember that if you lose 1lb of fat but gain 1lb of muscle, that's a huge win! Gaining lean tissue is key for health and longevity even if the number on the scale doesn't budge.
That wraps up this week's coach's corner on executing an effective diet phase. If you found this information helpful, please leave a 5-star review and be sure to join me next time when I'll share strategies for the critical post-diet phase. Until then, stay strong!

Tue, 17 Oct 2023 - 238 - Coach's Corner - Pre-Diet Hacks for Lasting Weight Loss
The episode starts with me making an analogy to lottery winners - how they often end up broke because they don't learn good financial habits first. The same goes for rapid weight loss without good habits in place. I explain that what you do before and after a diet is actually more important than the diet itself!
I share that this will be a 3-part series on optimizing your diet approach. Today we covered the pre-diet phase. Next week will be the actual diet, and then we'll wrap up with the crucial post-diet phase.
For the pre-diet phase, I discuss the following 5 steps:
1. Build Strength - Focus on age-appropriate strength training, not crazy heavy lifting. Just 45 mins to 1 hour 3 days a week can work wonders by boosting metabolism and preventing age-related muscle and bone loss.
2. Reverse Diet - Slowly increase calories each week to reach an appropriate maintenance level before starting your diet. This supports muscle building and resets your metabolism after prior restricting.
3. Prioritize Protein - Eat 0.7-1g of protein per pound of ideal body weight to clearly signal your body to build muscle. I share good sources and tips like a protein-rich breakfast.
4. Manage Stress - Chronic stress hurts weight loss, so mindfulness, meditation, magnesium, and restorative yoga can help counterbalance a stressful lifestyle.
5. Get More Sleep - Sleep is one of the most powerful health and weight loss hacks. Support restful sleep by optimizing your sleep environment and habits.
I explain that this pre-diet phase could take a few months depending on your starting point, but leads to better weight loss AND keeping it off long-term. Next week we'll dive into the diet phase! I hope these steps help you approach weight loss from a sustainable, healthy angle.

Fri, 13 Oct 2023 - 237 - From Autoimmunity to Vibrant Health with Cassandra Carpenter & Noelle Creamer
As someone who has dealt with my own chronic health issues, I was really inspired by Cassandra and Noelle's stories. Like many people, they both struggled trying to get an accurate diagnosis and find relief for their mysterious symptoms.
What really resonated with me was the isolation and lack of support they experienced once diagnosed. The conventional medicine route of medications and procedures didn't provide the full solution. That's when they realized they had to become their own health advocates and investigate lifestyle changes like diet, movement, reducing toxins and more.
Through trial and error, they found combinations that worked to heal their bodies and put their diseases in remission. But what Noelle and Cassandra say made the biggest difference was finding community. They wished they had a supportive group who understood what they were going through earlier in their journey.
That's why they started BrightlyThrive - to provide the community, resources, and encouragement they needed during their autoimmunity experience. Their mission is to reframe autoimmunity as an opportunity, not a life sentence.
During our conversation, Noelle and Cassandra shared:
- How autoimmune diseases have been skyrocketing, with over 100 types affecting 50 million Americans
- Steps they took to heal including eliminating trigger foods, gut healing protocols, lifestyle changes
- The power of mindset and having the belief you can thrive with autoimmunity
- Why connection with others on a similar path is such strong medicine
- How an autoimmune diagnosis can be a catalyst to transform your health and life
I was blown away by their positivity, passion and dedication to helping others going through autoimmune struggles. It's not an easy road, but they are proof you can find remission and live a vibrant, full life.
If you or someone you love has been diagnosed with an autoimmune condition, I highly recommend tuning in to this encouraging and informative episode. The steps Noelle and Cassandra share can help put you on the path to healing and thriving as well.

Wed, 11 Oct 2023 - 236 - Coach’s Corner – 12 Fitness Truths I Was Wrong About
Welcome to another solo episode of the Over 50 Health and Wellness Podcast. Today I'm sharing a bit about my personal yoga experience and reflecting on some things I've gotten wrong on my health journey.
I tried hot power yoga years ago - intense flows in a heated room. It was a sweaty struggle at first as an inflexible beginner surrounded by bendy yogis. But over time it helped me build strength, flexibility and mind-body connection.
I'm now re-exploring slower styles like yin yoga. It's challenging in different ways - sitting still and turning inward. But great for mobility and meditation.
Next I talk about things I’ve been wrong about. We all make mistakes and get things wrong, especially in ever-changing fields like health and fitness. I've learned a lot through trial and error. For example:
- What works for weight loss long-term is more complex than just calories in and out.
- Consistent balanced training is better than all-out intensity.
- Anyone can make a positive impact with health info; no one is too unimportant.
The key is staying humble and open to growth. It's uncomfortable admitting when we're wrong, but that's how we improve.
I hope this reflection provides some value. Thanks for listening - stay strong! Check the show notes for more details and resources from today's show.

Wed, 04 Oct 2023 - 234 - Coach's Corner - Should You Consider Investing in a Coach?
In this episode I focus on the value of coaching for those of us over 50 and how it can help in achieving health and fitness goals.
I start with a disclaimer that I make my living as a coach, so I'm certainly not an unbiased person on this topic. However, I've also personally spent a lot of money on coaches and programs for my own health and fitness journey over the years.
I discuss what a good coach can provide, including expertise, accountability, emotional support, and a willingness to meet you where you are. Good coaches should have certifications, experience working with similar clients to you, and references or testimonials. They should be good communicators, take a holistic approach, and help you feel connected on your health journey.
I then talk about some red flags to watch out for when looking for a coach. These include a one-size-fits-all approach, programs marketed as for "everyone", pushy sales tactics, lack of transparency, and hiding pricing. A good coach should clearly explain their methods and pricing without pressuring you.
When considering investing in a coach, don't just look at the price tag - think about the value of their expertise and the lasting impact on your health. Improved vitality and confidence don't have a fixed price.
In the end, investing in a coach is committing to your future self and optimal health in the second half of life. It's worth considering if you want to show up as the strongest version of yourself.

Wed, 27 Sep 2023 - 232 - Coach's Corner - From Insecure to Unstoppable: Carla's Journey to Becoming a Coach
Today I want to share with you the inspiring story of my long-time client Carla.
Carla has been on an amazing health and weight loss journey, overcoming a lifetime of struggles with her body image and self-confidence. Growing up overweight and insecure, Carla tried endless diets and programs in an attempt to lose weight, but nothing ever seemed to work long-term.
Finally, in 2006 she made the drastic decision to undergo gastric bypass surgery as a "last resort." Amazingly, Carla reached her goal weight of 150 lbs within a year and a half after surgery, and has managed to maintain it ever since.
This surgery was not a simple fix - it required Carla to make major changes to her lifestyle and mindset in order to see lasting results.
Today Carla is focusing more on her psychology and personal growth than just nutrition and exercise. She still battles the voice inside telling her she's "not good enough," a remnant of her difficult childhood and adolescent experiences. But Carla is dedicated to her continual improvement and showing up as the best, most positive version of herself in all areas of life.
Carla has now decided to become a certified nutrition coach herself! She wants to pay forward everything she has learned on her journey and help others who are struggling with their weight and self-image. Carla is starting the process of nutrition coaching certification training to be able to impact and transform lives.
At the end of this episode I put out a call-to-action for any listeners who may be interested in receiving free coaching from Carla over the next couple months as she goes through the certification program. This is a great opportunity to both help Carla complete the required practice coaching hours, and also get personalized guidance and support for your own health goals entirely for free. If you are interested, simply send me an email (at coach@silveredgefitness.com) briefly explaining your background and goals, and I’ll forward it along to Carla.
Carla's story reminds us that sustainable health and weight loss requires a mindset shift above all else. Her journey demonstrates the incredible power we have to take control of our lives and become the person we wish to be. As you’ll hear, I’m clearly very inspired by Carla's perseverance and personal growth, and I’m certain she will make an amazing coach herself. This episode provides a motivational and uplifting story about overcoming the odds to achieve our dreams.

Fri, 01 Sep 2023 - 225 - Healing Through Health & Wellness with Nancy Flint-Budde
In this moving episode, I sit down with Nancy Flint-Budde who shares her unique perspective on navigating grief through investing in health and wellness. Less than 16 months after losing her husband to cancer, Nancy reveals how she’s using fitness, nutrition, and mindfulness to not only cope but to rebuild her life and rediscover her sense of self.
Key Takeaways:
Understanding Grief and Trauma: Nancy underscores the importance of acknowledging the physical and emotional reactions our bodies have to trauma. She discusses the ways our parasympathetic nervous system can get out of balance during times of deep grief.
The Power of Physical Wellness: Nancy highlights how certain exercises, especially resistance training, have been transformative for her, helping her reconnect with her body and gain a sense of control in her life.
Healthy Changes Post-Trauma: Rather than adhering to the common advice of not making any changes post-loss, Nancy encourages listeners to actively seek out healthy changes. For her, this meant cutting out alcohol and focusing on nutrition, ultimately helping her regain control in her life.
Rediscovering Control: Whether it’s through exercise, embarking on a new project, or changing dietary habits, Nancy stresses the importance of finding activities that help regain a sense of control and empowerment.
Recreating Your Story: As past guest Debbie Waines pointed out, there's immense power in starting something new and rewriting our narratives. This doesn't mean forgetting or undermining past memories, but rather integrating them into our new chapter.
The Healing Power of Laughter: Nancy reminds listeners of the therapeutic power of laughter. By sharing genuine stories, even humorous ones, of her late husband Al, she finds a path towards healing and connection.
Call to Action:
If you or someone you know is navigating the difficult waters of grief, consider sharing this episode. The path to healing can come from unexpected places, and for many, investing in our health and wellness could be the key.Connect With Nancy:
If you’d like to reach out and connect with Nancy to discuss her journey and thoughts on dealing with grief and trauma, you can email her at flintbudde@gmail.com.

Thu, 24 Aug 2023 - 223 - Classic Rewind - Jiu-Jitsu Grandma Elaine Beiersdoerfer
I know I’ve asked this before, but what does a 72 year old woman look like? What is she capable of? What are her limitations? Many of us have preconceived notions of what a 72 year old could - or could not - do. When we conjure up images of 72 year olds, we might think of a bespeckled grandmotherly woman in a rocking chair with her knitting on her lap. Certainly we wouldn't imagine this woman fighting. I mean, like really, actually physically fighting another person. Would we?
My guest this week on the Over 50 Health & Wellness podcast is Elaine Beiersdoerfer. Elaine is a 72 year old grandmother of seven, who regularly practices and competes in judo in jujitsu. She's four foot 11 and weighs in at just over a hundred pounds, and to call her spunky would fall woefully short. Join us this week as we as Elaine discusses how she took up judo and jiujitsu at age 69, and her thoughts on staying mentally and physically sharp as we age. You can connect with Elaine on Instagram @jiujitsu_grandma.

Fri, 07 Jul 2023 - 209 - Probiotics and Healthy Aging with Natasha Trenev
Today we're diving deep into the fascinating world of probiotics and the vital role they play in our overall health and healthy aging.
The term
'probiotics' might make you think of yogurt commercials, or maybe even those
fancy refrigerated supplements at the health food store. But did you know that
the history of probiotics in the United States goes way back before they became
mainstream? Today, we're going to explore that history, along with the
incredible science of how these friendly bacteria work in harmony with our
bodies. We'll also delve into the amazing world of the gut microbiome – that's the diverse community of trillions of microorganisms living in our digestive tract. It's an ecosystem that's so complex, and so crucial, that some scientists call it a 'second brain'. We'll learn how it influences not just our digestion, but our immune system, our mood, , our skin health, and yes, even our aging process.

you're a long-time probiotics enthusiast, or you're just curious about why health
gurus keep recommending yogurt, this episode is packed with information that you

If you’re listening to this, chances are you are interested in changing your body. Perhaps you want to shed a few pounds. Maybe you want to tone up or build some muscle. Fri, 19 May 2023 - 195 - Revolutionizing Your Fitness with KAATSU with Steven Munatones
If you’re a regular listener of this show, you know we’re big fans of building muscle over 50. As Dr. Gabrielle Lyon tells us, muscle is the organ of longevity. Muscle helps keep us functioning at a high level as we age, it gives us a lean toned body, and we know that generally speaking, more muscle means a faster metabolism which means more calories burned per day.
But gaining muscle can be difficult. It requires some form of resistance training – typically with weights. It requires progressive overload, and it requires us to fuel ourselves properly to create an environment conducive to muscle growth.
But what if there was a shortcut, a hack so to speak? What if there was something we could do – not to replace strength training – but to complement and enhance the hard work we do in the gym that required very minimal additional effort on our part?
Sound too good to be true? Stick around, we’re gonna deep dive into this technology and show you exactly how to build and keep muscle as you age.
My guest today is Steven Munatones. Stephen is the CEO and co-founder of KAATSU which is a pioneer in the blood flow restriction market. Steven has introduced KAATSU successfully to collegiate and professional sports teams, branches of US military, and as you’ll soon hear – to a large population of people just like you and me.
Steven is an accomplished athlete himself. He was a NCAA Division I water polo player and swimmer, he’s a Guinness World Record holder, inductee in the International Marathon Swimming Hall of Fame and the Ice Swimming Hall of Fame, and the recipient of the Poseidon Award from the International Swimming Hall of Fame. He coached the USA Swimming national team at 9 international competitions, including 4 world championships, served as an NBC commentator at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, and founded WOWSA, the World Open Water Swimming Association.
Join us today as Steven shares exactly how we might harness blood flow restriction technology for recovery, rehabilitation, performance, and longevity. I started our conversation by asking Steven how he got interested in blood flow restriction.

Today we have another episode of the Coach’s Corner today, so no guest – it’s just me – and we’ll be back next week with our normal interview format next week. So this week I want to give you a quick update on what’s happening over here at the Silver Edge, and then I want to share a live training I did over in our private Facebook group last week. The title of that training was 8 Weeks to Your Best Summer Body. I did have slides for this training, and you’ll hear me refer to them a couple of times, but I think the gist of what I’m saying will come across just fine in this audio only format.

We’re all at the age where – if we’re lucky enough to still have our parents with us – we’re watching them grow old., and we see ourselves in them. For some of you this might be in inspiration. Perhaps your parents are active and vital and are enjoying this phase of their lives.

Wed, 19 Apr 2023 - 186 - Exploring Functional Nutrition with Andrea Nakayama
I often like to say that while nutritional science and be vastly complex, eating healthy should be quite simple.
Most of us know the types of foods we should avoid and the types of foods that nourish our bodies and our minds. So why do so many of us struggle with maintaining a healthy weight? Why are so many of us sick? And why are metabolic illnesses – the so-called lifestyle diseases - on the rise at such alarming rates in spite of the fantastic advances in technology and medicine?
Today I want to invite into an in-depth discussion on the topic of functional medicine and more specifically functional nutrition. I want you to step back and reimagine medicine and nutrition and their role in healthy aging. To help you navigate the messy worlds of medicine, science, popular media, and your own bio-individuality.
My guest today is Andrea Nakayama. Andrea is the founder of Functional Nutrition Alliance, a Functional Medicine Nutritionist and educator, and the 15-Minute Matrix Podcast. Andrea is leading thousands of students and practitioners around the globe in a revolution to offer better solutions to the growing chronic illness epidemic by highlighting the importance of systems biology, root cause methodology, and therapeutic partnerships, and today she is going to help us reclaim ownership of our health.
Join us today as we explore the realm of functional nutrition and how to apply what we learn to our lives for optimal health as we age.

Fri, 07 Apr 2023 - 184 - The Healing Power of Awe with Jake Eagle
The intro to the book The Power of Awe starts with a quote from Albert Einstein, and it reads:
“There are two ways to live: you can live as if nothing is a miracle; you can live as if everything is a miracle. The most beautiful thing we can experience is the mysterious. It is the source of all true art and all science. He to whom this emotion is a stranger, who can no longer pause to wonder and stand rapt in awe, is as good as dead: his eyes are closed.”
So my question to you is simple – are you living as if everything is a miracle? Do you routinely pause to wonder and stand rapt in awe? I think it’s safe to say most of us could use a little help in the awe and wonder department. If this sounds like you stick around, we have a fantastic episode that just might radically change your life for the better!
My guest today is Jake Eagle. Jake is a psychotherapist, mindfulness instructor, and co-author of the new book titled THE POWER OF AWE: Overcome Burnout & Anxiety, Ease Chronic Pain, Find Clarity & Purpose—In Less Than 1 Minute Per Day. Join us today as Jake helps us micro dose mindfulness and harness the power of awe to make us healthier, happier humans.

What role does technology play in your personal health and wellness journey? Do you wear some sort of fitness tracker? Maybe an Apple watch, a Fitbit, a Whoop strap, or an Oura ring? Do you count steps, track your calories and macros, or monitor how much deep sleep and REM sleep you’re getting each night? Wed, 22 Mar 2023 - 180 - How to Sustainably Lose Weight with Reverse Dieting featuring Holly Baxter
Imagine this scenario. You’re 30 pounds overweight, and in fact you’ve been overweight pretty much all of your adult life. Perhaps you’ve lost some or all of this weight several times in the last 25 years. The times you’ve tried dieting have been awful. You were constantly hungry, you were cranky, and a few weeks into it your sleep started to deteriorate, only making matters worse. You started to despise the treadmill. But you stuck with it through sheer determination and willpower. And you lost the weight and finally got to return to some sense of normalcy. But a year later you are right back where you started. And perhaps you start the cycle all over again. You feel frustrated and defeated, perhaps you’ve internalized your inability to permanently lose this excess weight as your personal failure.
But you’ve decided that this time is going to be different. New year, new you. Instead of following a diet you found online, or one that a friend suggested, you’ve hired a nutrition coach. And this nutrition coach isn’t cheap, but they have a great reputation and track record of helping people achieve long-term sustainable weight loss. And three months into this program you’ve been dieting and keeping up with your exercise. Nothing crazy, you’re a bit hungry some days, but it’s manageable. Your workouts are three weight training sessions a week, as well as one cardio session a week, and on the other days you’ve gotten in the habit of going on long walks with your dog. You feel great, and you realize that you’re halfway to your 30-pound weight loss goal.
But then on your next check in call you coach tells you that they want you to stop dieting. In fact, they are going to increase the amount of food that you eat each day. Wait… what? Increase the amount you eat each day? But… won’t that cause you to gain weight. Your coach informs you that yes, you’ll likely see some weight gain, but just a little. And now you’re thinking hold on… I’m paying my coach to help me lose weight – not gain it back. What’s the deal here? I was doing so good. I’m halfway to my goal. Why in the world would I want to backtrack now? Your coach patiently explains that you’re moving into a reverse dieting phase tat will las for the next 15 weeks. And you’re thinking to yourself – reverse dieting – what is this BS? I’m here to lose weight – not gain it back!
I’ve wanted to do an episode on reverse diets for a while now – what they are and why you might consider them. And one of the foremost experts on this subject is Holly Baxter. Holly is a 2x Natural World Champion Fitness Model and has a Master’s degree in Dietetics, is an Accredited Dietician, is a fitness educator, and along with her husband Layne Norton were early pioneers in field of reverse dieting - and they even wrote the definitive book on the subject titled The Complete Reverse Dieting Guide.Want to rewrite the narrative of your life and health?
