In this podcast I talk about the importance of step 5 in my Neurocycle process: the active reach. This is a replay of a Neurolive webinar I did on my app. For the full AD-FREE episode please see neurocycle.app.
In case you haven’t listened to any of my other podcasts or read any of my books or research, the Neurocycle is a way to harness our thinking power that I have developed and researched over the past three decades (I discuss this in detail in my book Cleaning Up Your Mental Mess and my app Neurocycle). It has 5 steps. The first step is to 1. gather awareness of how we feel mentally and physically and our perspective when we are dealing with a past wound. The second step is to 2. reflect on how we feel. Then we 3. write down our reflections to help organize our thinking. The fourth step is to 4. recheck: think about what our thoughts and feelings are trying to tell us. What does it say about what happened to us? What is our “antidote”— how will we work through how our thoughts are affecting us? Lastly, do the 5. active reach. This is a thought or action we need to practice daily to help us reconceptualize what we thought about in the previous step. What we are going to do each day to give ourselves the time and mental space needed to deal with what is bothering us and turn our destructive thoughts into a constructive future?

Although this may sound counterintuitive, too much positivity can be toxic. It can harm people who are going through difficult times, and make them feel ashamed for experiencing normal human emotions like sadness, grief, depression, anger, and so on. If someone is made to feel that things have got to be positive all the time, then they may think that if they feel bad in some way, there must be something wrong with them, which can exacerbate their mental distress at a time when they need support and community.

This is part of my summer series on brain-building activities you can do with your children to help them build up their mental resilience and manage their mental health while having fun.
We all know that getting outside is great for our mental wellbeing. Just think of how you feel when you go for a walk in the sunshine or spend time reading at the beach. Nature has a way of calming us down mentally and physically.
The same is true for our children. Playing outside is one of the best things they can do to boost their mental and physical wellbeing. This may seem obvious, but consider that the average American child spends 4-7 minutes a day in unstructured play outdoors and over 7 hours in front of a screen. This is a cause for concern, as research shows that that children should play outside for around 2-3 hours, or at minimum 20 minutes, a day for optimal mental and physical development. As much as modern technology has improved our lives, it should not replace the act of enjoying the outdoors and what nature has to offer.

This was Hannah’s question: “My kids are 12, 10, and 8. I personally have been through extensive brain rewiring and parent accordingly to help my kids overcome toxic thought loops. However my 8 year old loops more often than not and is incredibly spiritually sensitive and is very empathic. I really believe her migraines are stress induced as they almost always follow a tough day at school, being bullied, or when she has had a day of high and happy emotions. While I try to implement as many calming and mind-management strategies as possible, I find myself completely exhausted and burned out as a result of trying to do the deeper mental work with her to help her stay mentally healthy and build resilience to and through tough emotional days. How do I help an empathic 8 year old navigate incredibly intense emotions from a vantage point of giving her tools to use that will help her mental health thrive long term?”.
