Crime and Coffee Couple - True Crime Podcast

This is a case of a grisly quadruple murder that happened in April of 1981 at the Keddie Resort in the tiny northern California town of Keddie, California. Many years before this horrific night, the resort was considered idyllic & included a rustic hotel, bar & restaurant nestled in the woods along the Feather River. It was founded in 1910 as a getaway where 33 cabins were available for rental & vacationers would fish for trout in the rivers or walk the beautiful trails. In its heyday, the Keddie Lodge Restaurant was packed with patrons who dined on barbecued bear ribs & sherry-basted racoon steaks.

In 1991, Richard Illes met Miriam Zambie while working as a resident at St. Louis Medical Center where Miriam worked as a perfusionist.  The couple got married in 1991 & within a few years, they welcomed their son, Richie, into the family. Stacey Colbert and her sister Danielle were raised in a small town in Illinois and went to the same elementary school, high school, and then onto college at The Ohio State University. About a year after college graduation, Stacey went missing. Allison shares everything we know so far.

Lauren Teresa Giddings, born in 1984, had a promising future after graduating from Agnes Scott College with a major in political science and a minor in religious studies. She moved to Macon, Georgia, to attend law school at Mercer University. Lauren was known for her outgoing and kind personality and was in a relationship with David Vandiver, a lawyer in Atlanta. Her family had high hopes for her as the first college graduate in their family.

However, Lauren's life took a tragic turn in June 2011. Allison tells us the rest of her story.

In April of 2006, Ashley Reeves was 17-years-old & a junior at Columbia High School who lived in Millstadt, Illinois with her parents & her younger sister Casey. Ashley was very social & a great student who kept up good grades in high school; her friends described her as funny & bright. Her parents adored her & she was dating a boy named Jeremy for close to two years. Ashley’s parents approved of the relationship & felt that Jeremy was wholesome & caring toward their daughter. On Thursday, April 27, 2006, Ashley told her parents that after school, she was making the 20 minute drive to Fairview Heights for an interview & then heading to play basketball afterwards with a friend, but she assured them that she would be home by her 10 pm curfew. It was January of 1982 when 33-year-old Lynette or Lyn Dawson went missing in Sydney, Australia. Lyn was described as a beautiful, warm, funny person. 28-year-old Sabina Nessa was an elementary school or primary school teacher as it would be referred to in London. She lived in an affordable southeast London neighborhood that housed young families & professionals. Only a year after she’d gotten her teaching degree,  & in September of 2019, Sabina had gotten her dream job, teaching five & six-year-old students in year one at Rushey Green Primary School in Catford. Rebecca Schaeffer was born in 1967 in Oregon to child psychologist father, Benson Schaeffer & writer, mom, Danna Schaeffer. She was an only child & her dad Benson remembers, “We were very lucky as a family. She was sort of a mystery because if she wanted to do something, she could do it.. She really sort of learned by looking & doing & it was easy.” The family moved to Portland when Rebecca was in high school & she was very drawn to drama, her eyes set on acting or modeling. She became a teen model at age 14 & moved to New York City at age 16 in hopes of bigger opportunities.

During an eight month period of time from September of 1977 to April of 1978, residents of Columbus, Georgia lived in fear as sevenwomen were raped & strangled; often with their own stockings. On December 15, 1997, a fire started in a two-story row house in north Pennsylvania. Luz Cuevas, the resident of the home & frantic mother, rushed into her 10-day-old infant’s room, in search of her baby. She was unable to locate her & soon became overcome by smoke & burns to her face & was forced to flee the home, saving her two other children. In 2016, Austin Harrouff was a 19-year-old sophomore at Florida State University, studying biology, he was a member of the Alpha Delta Phi fraternity, he loved weight lifting & idolized Arnold Schwarzenegger. He was a wrestler & a football player in high school. Austin had no criminal history, no history of mental illness, yet this story ends with Austin murdering two innocent people and injuring one. Allison brings us this week's story.
