Slow Bible

Slow Bible

Mary Spencer

The Slow Bible (with Mary Spencer) is an invitation for us to sit back and spend time praying with the Word of God, to soak in the Scriptures and in the presence of God. It is a precious break from the busyness of life. It’s a form of an ancient contemplative practice: Lectio Divina. These Latin words just mean “divine reading” - always brought with stillness, with contemplation, with repetition, and with a slow reading, creating space for the Holy Spirit to speak; Read, Reflect, Respond, Rest

    Deuteronomy 30:11-14 (from the Archive)

    New Living Translation

    11“This command I am giving you today is not too difficult for you, and it is not beyond your reach. 12It is not kept in heaven, so distant that you must ask, ‘Who will go up to heaven and bring it down so we can hear it and obey?’ 13It is not kept beyond the sea, so far away that you must ask, ‘Who will cross the sea to bring it to us so we can hear it and obey?’ 14No, the message is very close at hand; it is on your lips and in your heart so that you can obey it.

    Jesus Promises the Holy Spirit

    15“If you love me, obey my commandments. 16And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Counsellor, (or Comforter, or Encourager or Advocate), who will never leave you. 17He is the Holy Spirit, who leads into all truth. The world at large cannot receive him, because it isn’t looking for him and doesn’t recognize him. But you know him, because he lives with you now and later will be in you.

    Psalm 130:5-7 (from the Archive)

    New Living Translation

    5I am counting on the Lord;
        yes, I am counting on him.
        I have put my hope in his word.

    6I long for the Lord
        more than sentries long for the dawn,
        yes, more than sentries long for the dawn.

    7O Israel, hope in the Lord;
        for with the Lord there is unfailing love.
        His redemption overflows.

    John 21 v 15-19
    New Living Translation

    15After breakfast Jesus asked Simon Peter, “Simon son of John, do you love me more than these?”

    “Yes, Lord,” Peter replied, “you know I love you.”

    “Then feed my lambs,” Jesus told him.

    16Jesus repeated the question: “Simon son of John, do you love me?”

    “Yes, Lord,” Peter said, “you know I love you.”

    “Then take care of my sheep,” Jesus said.

    17A third time he asked him, “Simon son of John, do you love me?”

    Peter was hurt that Jesus asked the question a third time. He said, “Lord, you know everything. You know that I love you.”

    Jesus said, “Then feed my sheep.

    18“I tell you the truth, when you were young, you were able to do as you liked; you dressed yourself and went wherever you wanted to go. But when you are old, you will stretch out your hands, and others will dress you and take you where you don’t want to go.” 19Jesus said this to let him know by what kind of death he would glorify God. Then Jesus told him, “Follow me.”

    Psalm 103:8-13 (from the Archive)

    New Living Translation

    8The Lord is compassionate and merciful,
        slow to get angry and filled with unfailing love.

    9He will not constantly accuse us,
        nor remain angry forever.

    10He does not punish us for all our sins;
        he does not deal harshly with us, as we deserve.

    11For his unfailing love toward those who fear him
        is as great as the height of the heavens above the earth.

    12He has removed our sins as far from us
        as the east is from the west.

    13The Lord is like a father to his children,
        tender and compassionate to those who fear him.
