OWNERSHIP I have been fortunate to have had 2 great conversations with coaching clients today, and the underlying theme was OWNERSHIP. How much ownership of your actions, decisions, behaviours, attitudes etc... do you take? What underpins your relationship with 'taking ownership'? What part has your origin story played in your relationship to 'taking ownership'? Do you only take ownership when things go right, or wrong, or both? Some big questions..... Take some time to consider what taking ownership of everything you do would mean? What would this mean for the decisions you take and the choices you take? I would love to hear your views. Thu, 21 Oct 2021 - 03min - 61 - SNAP SHOT - MY WHY
MY WHY Simon Sinek has done some fabulous work on understanding your 'WHY' (If you are not familiar with it then have a look into it!) I have been considering mine for some time and feel it is the right time to share it.... It currently works for me and in time might crystallise even further. What is your WHY? What is the trace you would like to leave? How does knowing and articulating what is important to you motivate and inspire you? If you are not sure - how might you further consider your why? For those interested My WHY - it is as follows... “To inspire people to do the things that inspire them and leave the world better than I found it. And specifically, I want to help people find and do more meaningful work. I want to help people relieve their chronic work anxiety by helping them see patterns in their story, so they can design their lifestyle around the work they have always wanted to do. I want to be remembered by the people whose lives I have touched as a force for good in their lives.” I am sharing it (not to be self indulgent!) because I want to demonstrate what meaningful work is for me and I want to inspire you to consider and work out what your why is.... Please drop me a line if you would value some coaching to identify and bring to life your why? Feel free to share your why in the comments below.... #coaching #work #leadership #mywhy To relieve work anxiety and build confidence to design a lifestyle around the work you have always wanted to do, have a look at my Leadership Coaching and Online Development Programmes www.sportstories247.com www.thesummitpartnership.com Contact... Mon, 11 Oct 2021 - 01min - 53 - Simon Clifford - CEO at Integer Football, High Performance Coach and Futsal Pioneer
An incredibly open, honest and vulnerable conversation where Simon shares in his calm and humble way his story from being a passionate sports person and having an early career as a sport teacher right through to bringing Brazilian style football principles to the UK as well as influencing football worldwide, consulting on films and working with some of the most famous footballers the world has seen. In his own words he was a ‘man with a mission’. This brought its highs as well as its lows. In my mind Simon is a student of football as well as life and gives great insight into how you can rise from hitting rock bottom. He gives living proof you can change the way you approach your life if you take responsibility and action. It is a heartfelt story that will definitely make you think about who you are, what you do, how you do it and ultimately what success is in life and sport. It was a real privilege and honour to have Simon as the 50th Sport Stories Podcast guest. A must listen!!! If you enjoy the podcast, please consider leaving a short review on Apple Podcasts/iTunes. Due to an experience of being ‘dropped’ I decided to take up something that was just reliant on the watch (running) My hero was Terry Cochrane - as a footballer he liked to run at people and take them on. I therefore saw football as running at people and taking them on was the way to play football (not everybody liked this!) I decided to take up Athletics – but wasn’t very good or by any means the fastest. After a knock back of not being included in the school cross country team – I become very determined. At times I wish I had carried on with football but Athletics taught me a life lesson – implementing key performance principles consistently and routinely irrespective of talent will get you somewhere. Stoics and Spartans I enjoyed reading from a young age and finding out about people and their lives My edge for training dropped at university but I threw myself into my studies I applied the principles developed in my early years and gained a 1stt in my degree. If you apply yourself to things you find hard and work at them – you can be successful. I became a teacher – a bit by default. I re discovered my interest and passion for football (and coaching) by taking the U8,9,10, 11 in the school I worked at. I became great friends with Juninho when he played at Middlesbrough due to a shared love of football. I was not satisfied in ‘dishing up for them’ what everyone else did. I wanted to find out the best way and provide it where I could I wanted the absolute best. I hunted here there and everywhere for those children Being the best was my attitude to sport for many years – it wouldn’t be today. I looked back into the history of sport. I really liked working hard and winning. This view has changed as the years went on It was an amazing 5-6 weeks in Brazil…. The detail and work ethic in Brazil was clear to see and was not what I was led to believe it would be (people just playing on the beach) Coe had intrigued me as he was an early user of sport science and built a team around him. Brazil had better psychology services as far back as 1958… then we have had
Mon, 14 Jun 2021 - 1h 19min - 52 - Tony Fretwell - FA Women’s Super League Academy Manager
In his usual, passionate, and engaging style Tony covers many important and often debated topics in this must listen Podcast. We cover late developers; talent identification; imposter syndrome; mental wellbeing; importance of great people skills; dual careers for all …. and so much more. He is straight talking. Tony openly shares his mental health struggles and challenges as well as offers many gems to those looking to maximise their impact in work and life. Tony said “he is a ‘100 cap international’ at thinking and doing what he does”. Dedicate an hour of your time and invest in yourself to become your own ‘100 cap international’ If you enjoy the podcast, please consider leaving a short review on Apple Podcasts/iTunes. Through my own experiences I have an interest and passion for talent development and especially late developers I was surrounded by people who knew more than me – so wanted to know more! I developed an obsession with the sport. If couldn’t get the experience then I would make it I sent my CV to every Rugby League club as I wanted a job in development. Don’t worry about being cheap (not being paid a great deal) at the start [of your career]. It will change in time Go where you can get the opportunity. There have been many times I have sat their and gone ‘how have I got this (job)?’ There were time I felt desperately out of my depth Your qualification may say you have the ability to get you through the door – but its not that, that gets you through the door. Its all the other stuff that you are willing to do Sport is a pastime that millions love – so it becomes competitive. You have to make yourself stand out from the crowd through your own efforts. My work ethic stood me out – nobody was working harder at it than me. The better you get the more chance you have of being lucky Imposter syndrome has always been and issues and is still and issue now. Be confident in what you do know – put forward what you know and don’t blag or lie. Develop great people skills He frames it as ‘he is a 100 cap international at thinking about what he does’ Listen to people you don’t agree with and develop an understanding of why they think ‘that’ You have got to be really comfortable with mistakes and let them happen If you try to stop every mistake you are killing learning left right and centre. Courtesy of David Faulkner – Fail Fast. Try something, recognise when it’s not going right and change it. Make mistakes with the best of intentions. Talent development is like ‘Indiana Jones trying to find the Holy Grail’. There is no single answer to how to produce world class athletes. The questions I always ask is -Why (the rationale) and how you going to do it? Never you cant! Much more important than the rules are the KEY/CORE PRINCIPLES Will what we do make the player better or the environment in which the player sits better? I build a philosophy around happiness and contentment. He opportunity at the Women’s FA was a ‘miss it and miss out opportunity’. I left with no bridges burnt at the RFL - as I may need or want to go back at some stage I found out about people – do my reading. If there is a source of knowledge then I know to ask lots
Mon, 07 Jun 2021 - 1h 24min - 51 - Dan Newton - CEO Parkour UK and Independent Director Boccia England
An open, insightful and vulnerable conversation with the now leader of lifestyle sport governing body - Parkour UK (a sport community which was not sure it needed a Governing Body!) Dan has had a fantastic career in sport and shares many pearls of wisdom that he has picked up on the way. He has faced some great high and some devastating losses and talks openly about these experiences. It’s not been a simple and straight forward path and Dan really shows how hard work and perseverance with a clear purpose has helped him do what he always wanted to do. I found it was difficult to change the world, so I tried to change my nation. When I found I couldn’t change the nation, I began to focus on my town. I couldn’t change the town and as an older man, I tried to change my family. Now, as an old man, I realise the only thing I can change is myself, and suddenly I realise that if long ago I had changed myself, I could have made an impact on my family. My family and I could have made an impact on our town. Their impact could have changed the nation and I could indeed have changed the world.” There is a lot in life when you get told no...get told no again …and you get told no again. Mon, 31 May 2021 - 1h 08min - 50 - Brian Ashton MBE -Former England Rugby Union Head Coach now Performance Coach Developer and Advisor
A fabulous and insightful discussion with Former England Rugby Union Head Coach – Brian Ashton - who would describe himself as ‘rebellious’ and someone keen to push boundaries for peak performance. We explored the idea of VUCA coaching and followed the energy of the conversation. In the spirit of not being constrained by boundaries and limitations of belief we covered some real ground and jumped around. It was a huge amount of fun full of ‘intrigue’ and ‘mystery’. This is well worth an hour of your time. It has a rugby union flavour yet there are so many key principles and ideas relevant to other sports, coaching, leadership, business and life in general. Exposed to different cultures Explore the term VUCA coaching Kevin Roberts was a close mentor and friend and introduced the phrase - VUCA - to him Volatile Uncertain Complex Ambiguous (Military foundations) Survive - Revive – Thrive Many sports could be classed as VUCA games Or could VUCA mean… (from Stanford Uni) This could be SUPER Vibrant Unreal Crazy Amazing Coaching clichés for example - there is no space? These are often ideas and stories for people to hide behind when things go wrong? Constantly practicing the notion of impossibility ‘We were very self-reliant and self-sufficient, and we found a way of doing things’ Over time developed a mentality of finding a way and believing anything is possible Having a growth mindset and accepting personal challenge as part of your DNA What may be stopping people – FEAR! Create this vibrant ‘family’ environment as arguably this is the strongest bond we have This is environment and set up is very difficult for the opposition to play against and fantastic fun. Nothing more exciting then doing something different and seeing it working. Crazy coaches – take the ‘impossible’ notions and make them work. Good example is Dick Fosbury Crazy coaches have a ‘changing mindset’ World class coaches or world changing coaches? When I started I was the very opposite to a super VUCA coach In my early days in the classroom I taught the subject and not the pupils and as a coach I coached the game and not the players. So, I had no emotional connection [to the learners/players] I sort out Pierre Villepreux and spoke with him. I ultimately spent a great deal of time with him. The easy way is to tell people what to do but you only get short term results and will have to probably tell them again. I brought him over because he was better than me. It was brave doing this. He has a much more holistic and global approach to his coaching. He coached from the game itself I developed a much more outcome-based approach to my coaching and tapped into the knowledge of the people and players around me. There still seems to be a fear of seeming not ALL knowledgeable - Omniscient (Knowing everything) A team that played for a whole season without kicking the ball Wayne Smith - ex All Blacks Coach “ It’s the way you run the race not the way you win it that counts !

Danielle has had an incredible journey in sport and through sport and shares strategies she has developed to help her be incredibly successful in sport, business and life, whilst managing her disability. I loved the idea that she has ‘copied and pasted what she uses in sport’ to all other aspects of her life. She truly brings to life her mantra’ there is no such thing as cant’ and shares many tips and soundbites that would be useful for any individual facing challenges or adversity or simply looking to maximise their impact in whatever they do. It is well worth an hour of your time to hear what she has and continues to ‘copy and paste’, and how this continues to develop her self-confidence. Disability – under represented and mis represented. I feared that people would not see past the disability and see the value that lay within me. My family did not let me take it easy – this really helped me in understanding and appreciating where my limits were. In adversity we always have a choice – give up or get up! The ‘mental side’ runs pretty much through everything. Sport provides and distraction from the pain and with the adrenalin rush it becomes more removed. The mind is so important and if you get that right - everything else will follow Your physical limits are so further on than you often think Not very good to GB team in 3 years Really listening to coaches helped. Bounce ideas off them really helped me mature as a person My real strength was the mental side – dealing with pressure ‘I would really recommend that people invest in themselves – their personal development” I have literally ‘copied and pasted [the skills, attributes and behaviours] what I use in sport ” “Sport has been one of my greatest teachers – it has taught me about myself. I have learnt what I am good at and where my strengths are, as well as the areas for challenge and areas to improve on” Cut and paste – confidence, self-belief, resilience, goal setting Ask/consider these questions: Who you are? Why doing what you are doing? Where do you want to go and what you do you want to achieve? How are you going to get there and by when? I built my confidence by people believing in me and re defining my measure of success and focussing on the tiny wins/successes not the big gold medal winning acheivements I got to where I got in sport because people helped me. Keen on working with girls and women – specific challenges with great ‘potential’. I see that the barriers and limitations we often face stem from childhood. “Its perfectly normal to have doubt and perfectly normal to think you have it sussed” A powerful, purposeful, insightful and honest view in to the journey Christophe has taken to being one of the best Rugby Union Referees in the world. He openly shares his thoughts and experiences form childhood right through to what goes on for him on match day in the 6 Nations. He has a quiet arrogance yet continues to question himself and his ability. He is a shining example of somebody maximising his potential and who has a thirst for learning and a deep curiosity of people and how they interact. I am drawn to people who are ‘very strong’. I like that strong firm behaviour. My dad is a very firm character and assertive. He is very practical in how he faces things. I wish I was more interested in my academics as I think I missed a trick there. It wasn’t I became more interested in learning it was that I was READY to learn ( in a more formal way!) I have a specific interest in the way people interact I want to coach on a deeper level – I want to be involved in the whole process of developing the person I am just absorbed by behaviours You have to accept that you are not there to be liked and not there to make friends If know one talks to you or about you, you have done a good job. It comes with little external gratification. My goal is now to not be spoken about. My gratification comes from a ‘quiet arrogance’ Those three things are written down and I have them with me in my changing room to remind me why I am here. I am consciously and constantly surrounding myself with experts. I am looking to gain and transfer skills from all walks of life I am aware that it is never ending and I need to be constantly aware that I have something to learn People say - you are an average of the people you associate yourself with. Show me your friends and I will show you your future Planned with Pure authenticity There is a risk of over planning and over scripting As a new, young looking referee I really planned and was conscious to be ‘business like’ I have lots of scars and learnt those things early Making these [performance] habits makes you world class at what you deliver. The habits are something you live and breathe. It is a constant. Its relentless. It is Full time – not something you can dabble in and out of. There is no perfect performance. I want to reach my max capacity Managing through the low times – I acknowledge there would be low times I prepared for what I would

An amazingly heartfelt, open and honest insight into what it was like for Sarah developing her career in sport. She is truly a ‘learner’ and you can see why she now does what she does and in the way she does it. Her openness, self awareness and vulnerability is a pleasure to engage with and there are no shortages of take aways, tips and advice from listening in. School Sports Coordinator to Sports Policy maker and talent development coach. The very authentic and heart-warming story of the highs and lows of the journey Lucy has been on. Dealing with the labels attributed to her all the way through to how her previous life experiences really inform and educate her around the work and impact she is now having. A brilliant discussion peeling back the onion layers and getting a deep insight into her process and how she has managed her dyslexia and autism. Listen deeply and take action – Lucy is truly a giver with a very genuine style and offers some fantastic guidance and advice! This is how she would describe herself…. Approaching life with a slightly geeky earnest enthusiasm. Sports development and coaching specialist. Passionate about supporting people and helping them to be the best they can be. Love learning and currently working to complete my Doctorate. All round sporty person, with main interests including hockey (coaching and playing), visiting the gym (when not in a pandemic) and training for my first (and last) IronMan triathlon. Enjoy languages and like finding ways to improve my Spanish, French and German (none of which are any good, but that’s not the point). Blue Peter badge owner. Neurodivergent person: dyslexic and Autism Spectrum Disorder (which sounds too pathologised for me, used to be called Aspergers – but that doesn’t really exist as a diagnosis anymore, we all get labelled ASD). From a young Wigan lad to the longest standing Rugby League Head Coach for Scotland attending 3 world cups. He has travelled the world, worked at a number of clubs and has found that humour, hard work and remaining humble are key. It is such a great conversation if you are keen to hear somebody who is striving to be themselves and honest about who they are and have been. Authentic leadership comes to my mind! Steve is now the Head of Welfare at Rugby League Cares in the UK. He took up the role after heading up the education and welfare position at the Wigan Warriors. Steve is a highly experienced individual having coached at all levels of the game. He has been Head Coach at Super-League level and also coached the Scotland national team in three world cups and the 2016 Four Nations Competition. His recent appointment at RL Cares has seen him make a massive impact on the player welfare structure of all players playing in the UK. The value of an impartial and confidential conversation was so helpful It is very different being head coach to being an assistant coach I just started putting time as side to spend time with my family – I started to recognise the importance of this. Spending time watching my lad now playing football. I have become more aware of those around me and valuing the time with them. These are valuable lessons learnt from my early days when I didn’t do this Recognising the elements of your life away from the sport – business, education, family etc… If only focussed on one thing and its not going well then things may be very difficult. All coaches get sacked… If I wrote everything down regarding my career it would be an interesting book. A peak – being involved in 3 world cups with Scotland especially in 2013 and then the 4 Nations in 2015 (drawing against New Zealand) You have got to keep those same principles - humble, hardworking etc… are non-negotiable and go wherever you go. Kevin Sinfield needs little introduction. In his word this was “the best week of his life” – running 7 marathons in 7 days. Kev the younger brother, best mate, team mate, retired player, the leader, the fundraiser and really importantly the father of the family shares some of his very own personal story in his usual humble, authentic, and determined way. It’s clear – we all had a similar mindset and a common goal Think of a team as the need of a full set of vitamins and minerals to perform at your best Working is performance sport is demanding and often just a slog Part of being in a team is giving a lot of yourself Selfish nature of performance Fine balance when being a player and leader to get things right The importance of being able to read people In the team environment – I never put myself before the team – NEVER!! Importance of family holidays – especially as we come to a stage when you become un cool for your kids to want to join you. Emotionally tough but we all got a glow about us Until you are in that situation – you don’t appreciate - friendships matter so much Quitting never ever entered my head… The ‘big elephant in the room’ is the person. Lets not loose sight of them for the small percentage gains People respond differently to different types of adversity Dare to dream… Coaching questions I would like to pose: 1 What are the key principles or values you live your life by? 2 Kev said Friendships matter so much: What are the quality and depth of your friendships? Who would do a 7 in 7 challenge for you and who would YOU do a challenge for and how would this enhance your friendship? 3 What has lockdown given you the time to do? Sara became Performance Director at England Netball five years ago & recently led the England Roses to a historic gold medal at the 2018 Commonwealth Games. Other career junctures include a six year stint as Performance Director at Archery GB, three years at UK Sport as a Performance Advisor, two years as a Business Manager in the City & three years as a police officer working in Nottingham inner city. Developing performance habits: Enjoying the journey; The richness of life through sport; Unpacking the puzzle of performance; Dealing with the unexpected death of her husband; Managing through change and bereavement; Transitioning out of sport; The importance of the team around you; Building back high performing transferable skills and so, so much more… I particularly like the following quote Rowena shared which I think is really relevant in the changing and uncertain world we are in. ”Never compare your beginning to someone else’s middle or end” Rowena represented Great Britain in the 1996 Olympics, and is a former European Judo Champion and National Coach. She then went to on to coaching the coaches, working with a wide variety of performance sports coaches. The lessons learnt through high performance sport have served her well, providing her with a framework to lean on when life throws one of those curved balls. She also continues to enjoy practising a bit of judo in the local club. On reaching her 50th year, Rowena chose a change of direction, retraining as a financial adviser. In this role she coaches individuals and businesses on their financial fitness. As part of their team, she brings financial planning expertise to the table, advising on financial resilience, efficiency and performance to align with and help achieve their wider goals. Rowena’s motto is “Be serious with a Smile”, that is be serious about what you do, but never forget to have fun along the way. Manisha Tailor MBE is a former Deputy Headteacher, having worked in primary education for 19 years. She qualified as a Headteacher in 2011, but shortly after this embarked upon a career change due to personal circumstance.
