#malayalampodcast #padayani Padayani is a ritual theatre art form related to the Goddess temples in the Central Travancore regions of Kerala. Performed at night in the temple premises, the rituals of Padayani are a symbolic act for pleasing the Goddess Bhadrakali whose fury remains unabated even after her victory over the mythical demon, Darikan. The duration of the festivals varies from seven to 28 days according to the number of villages participating and organising it. The word Padayani evolved from the combination of two Malayalam words Pada and ani, which means a group of soldiers and rows respectively. Padayani, which means 'row of warriors' is believed to have been performed by warriors trained in Kalaripayattu to display their strength and chivalry in order to frighten their enemies from the southern part of Travancore. Thus this art form traces back to the rich martial art tradition of Kalaripayattu. It is also a thanksgiving for a good harvest which the villagers believed was not possible without the blessings of Gods and Goddesses. In its spirit and content, Padayani takes the form and style of an epic theater. It also characterises an act of purification carried out by the villagers in all devotion to ward off evil forces.

Malayalam cinema has always been known for having strong female characters, unlike most of the other languages in India. 2019 also witnessed some spectacular roles in which female leads excelled.

1)Aranyakam is a 1988 Malayalam film, directed by Hariharan, written by M. T. Vasudevan Nair and starring Saleema, Devan and Vineeth.The film was produced by B. Sasikumar.The music was composed by Raghunath Seth, with lyrics by O. N. V. Kurup and vocals by K. J. Yesudas and K. S. Chitra.It is about a teenage girl named Ammini who likes to visit forests and has a hobby of writing imaginary letters to famous people. Actress Saleema memorably portrays Ammini. She remains one of the few quirky female characters in Malayalam cinema till date. Ammini, who belongs to the family of feudal lords, meets Devan, who inspires and believes in her. But her life turns upside down when Ammini learns that Devan is a Naxalite wanting to kill her uncle. 2)Ennu Swantham Janakikutty is a 1998 Malayalam movie, written by M. T. Vasudevan Nair and directed by Hariharan. The movie features debutant Jomol in the lead role. The film is based on a story written by M. T. Vasudevan Nair named Cheriya Cheriya Bhookambangal. Janakikutty, who is ignored by her family, once gets confronted with the vision of a murdered lady. They become friends. By the power of that spirit, Janaki's uncaring family suffers many mishaps.
