Nechama Brodie

Dr Nechama Brodie has worked as a multi-media journalist, editor, producer and publisher for more than twenty-five years. During this time she has dodged the secret police in Burma, explored tunnels underneath Johannesburg, gotten dusty at rock festivals, and reported on the myth of ‘white genocide’ in South Africa.

Nechama’s work has appeared in leading South African newspapers like the Sunday Times, the Mail & Guardian, and City Press, and in the Hindustan Times (India) and the Guardian(UK). Nechama also previously headed up the training and research division TRI Facts for independent fact-checking agency Africa Check.

Nechama has a PhD in journalism and is a senior lecturer at the University of the Witwatersrand’s School of Journalism and Media Studies. Her research work focuses on fatal violence, public health, misinformation, and data.

The University of KwaZulu-Natal School of Clinical Medicine is hosting a series of conversations to honour the institution's  Alumni legends in Medicine under the leadership of Professor Ncoza Dlova, dean and head of the school.

Dr Mathume Josepth ‘Joe’ Phahla  trained as a medical doctor at the then University of Nata and has been the  Minister of Health of South Africa since August 2021. He was formerly the Deputy Minister of Health from May 2014 to August 2021. He had been a deputy minister since May 2009. 

Professor Ephraim Thibedi Mokgokong has made a massive contribution to the development of the medical field in South Africa.  As the first black gynaecologist to qualify and practise in South Africa, his first post was at KwaZulu-Natal’s King Edward Hospital, which at the time boasted the largest obstetrics unit in the entire Southern Hemisphere. He was part of the team that established the Medical University of Southern African (Medunsa, now known as the Sefako Makgatho Health Services University) in Ga-Rankuwa in January 1978. Professor Mokgokong recently received the prestigious Order of the Baobab for his excellent contribution to medical sciences in South Africa and his dedication to providing gynaecological services to disadvantaged women in rural areas. He was awarded National Orders at an investiture ceremony in April 2023.

Prof. Saraladevi Naicker is Emeritus Professor in Nephrology at the University of the Witwatersrand. She has mentored a large number of postgraduate students, hosted postgraduate trainees in Internal Medicine and Nephrology (both national and international), and supervised approximately 50 students at Masters and PhD levels. She has participated in numerous national and international conferences, including the world congresses of nephrology, and has published 17 book chapters and over 200 publications, with 190 of those being in peer-reviewed journals.

"This book provides illuminating insight into Zulu polygynous families. It examines how Zulu anthroponyms used in respect of the living-dead reflect social behaviour patterns within homesteads. Names become social outlets for sentiments of hostility and ill-feelings caused by quarrels between co-wives and in-laws. Zungu considers the challenge of plural marriages and the use of witchcraft to fight for the husband's love and affection. Names are also used to reflect and ward off evil spirits, which may cause illness and death. Despite the influence of globalisation and modernity, anthroponyms reflect mystical arts and occultism (whether real or imagined) in traditional societies, and they are effective oral strategies between family members and/or community members."  Source :Perlego

Professor Miriam Adhikari is a physician and scientist specialising in paediatrics with a focus on neonatology. She is Emeritus Professor at the University of KwaZulu-Natal and a neonatologist at the Nelson Mandela School of Medicine.[3] She also has a focus on paediatric nephrology and is a member of the Academy of Science of South Africa.

Dr Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma is a South African politician, medical doctor and former anti-apartheid activist. A longstanding member of the African National Congress (ANC), she currently serves as Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs and is the Chancellor of the University of Limpopo. Between October 2012 and January 2017 she served as the Chairperson of the African Union Commission, making her the first woman to lead either that organisation or its predecessor, the Organisation of African Unity.


Professor Malekgapuru Makgoba is an internationally recognised molecular immunologist. He obtained a MBBCh degree from the University of Natal’s Medical School in 1976 and a DPhil degree in Human Immuno-Genetics from the University of Oxford in 1983. In 1999, he edited African Renaissance, a book recording the September 1998 Johannesburg conference on the African Renaissance. He has received many awards and distinctions, including the Science-for-Society Gold Medal of the Academy of Science of South Africa in 2002; the Gold Medal for Outstanding Leadership in Medical Research in 2001; and the National Science and Technology Forum’s Award for Outstanding Contribution to Science, Engineering and Technology in South Africa in 1999.

In 2006, he was named as one of 65 Caring Physicians of the World by the World Medical Association in recognition for upholding the medical profession’s fundamental and enduring traditions of care, ethics and science. Prof. Makgoba also received the prestigious National Research Foundation President’s Lifetime Achievement Award for his extraordinary contribution to the development of science.

Prof. Makgoba is a fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of London and the Royal Society of South Africa. He is also a foreign associate member of the US National Academy of Sciences Institute of Medicine and a fellow of the College of Physicians of South Africa. He was elected as the new Vice-President for Scientific Planning and Review of the prestigious Paris-based International Council for Science in 2011.

Prof. Makgoba was appointed the first black Deputy Vice-Chancellor of the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in 1995. He left Wits to join the South African Medical Research Council, which he headed between 1999 and 2002, and was involved in developing South Africa’s AIDS strategy and the South African AIDS Vaccine Initiative

Professor Mochichi Samuel Mokgokong, the first black South African to qualify as a neurosurgeon in 1987, and Professor Lizo Mazwai, an emiritus professor of surgery, were the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) alumni who were acknowledged for their contributions to medicine on this episode.

Mokgokong headed the teams responsible for three separations of craniopagus conjoined twins, and has trained and mentored more than 20 neurosurgeons and produced the youngest neurosurgeon in Africa in 2017.

This book highlights the plight of women who are widows in the African cultures. It is a memoir reflecting on personal experiences of the author. The book exposes ill cultural practices, myths, traditions, beliefs and societal expectations towards women who are widows. The author highlights some of the harmful, cultural practices; physical and psychological trauma, and the disregard for widows’ legal and marital rights. It exposes isolation and exclusion of widows from decision making, property grabbing, arranged marriages and gross human rights violations of women who are widows. Furthermore, the book highlights the role of women in gross violation and abuse of other women who are widows in the name of culture and religion. This is a story about a woman who survived the worst experiences as a widow and managed to rebuild her life, succeeded in her career and became a powerful force in society to empower and support other women.

Malika Lueen Ndlovu is a Durban – born poet, playwright, performer arts project manager and mother of three, with a wide range of experience in the Arts and Arts Management arenas. This episode of the podcast is a conversation with Johnny Clegg and Sipho Mchunu, legendary musicians and lifelong friends.

"Johnny Clegg, (born June 7, 1953, Bacup, near Rochdale, England—died July 16, 2019, Johannesburg, South Africa), South African musician, popularly called the “White Zulu,” whose innovative, ethnically integrated musical collaborations in the late 20th century constituted a powerful statement against apartheid, the enforced separation of Black and white peoples and traditions in South Africa.

Clegg subsequently developed a friendship with Sipho Mchunu, a Zulu migrant worker and street musician in Johannesburg. From Mchunu, Clegg learned the Zulu language and traditional music, as well as the vibrant dance styles that later became a regular feature of his performances. Clegg and Mchunu performed as a duo for a few years before they assembled a band called Juluka (Zulu: “Sweat”). In 1979 Juluka released Universal Men, an album that spoke to the divided lives of the migrant workers who reside and work in the city, separated from their families and homes. Stylistically, the album was a fusion of Zulu music and various European traditions. Later albums were similarly blended. Ubuhle Bemvelo (1982), the group’s third album, was performed entirely in Zulu.

During the early 1980s Juluka gained not only a strong local audience but also an enthusiastic international following, particularly in France, where Clegg fondly was labeled “Le Zoulou Blanc” (“The White Zulu”). Juluka’s success was an especially significant achievement during the apartheid era, when music that was performed by mixed (Black and white) bands or that blended Black and white styles was barred from South African radio. Juluka’s music, then, circulated primarily through live performances, which, particularly in South Africa, often led to encounters with the police. The group’s appeal indeed lay as much in its innovative and engaging music as in the political statement—both explicit and implicit—it made against apartheid, a system that was increasingly condemned by the international community." Qulu was born in Lamontville township near Durban and raised by her mother and sister. She went to school in Wentworth and then studied at the University of Zululand where she obtained a BSc degree in Biochemistry, followed by an honours degree at the University of KwaZulu-Natal (Durban-Westville) in 2009. She worked as a teacher at Lamontville High School for five years before deciding she was fascinated by neuroscience and wanted to study further in that field.

She then went on to get her MSc Medical Science (Cum Laude) through UKZN (Durban Westville) followed by a PhD Med Science through UKZN (Durban-Westville) in 2016. Dr Lihle Qulu is currently a senior lecturer at Stellenbosch University in the department of Human Physiology.

Her book 'Equal but Different' is based on her doctoral thesis which investigated the intersection of gender, race, and social class in women leaders' career progression and the leaders' proposed strategies for gender transformation at the leadership level.
