West Church Podcast | Mooresville, Lake Norman, NC | Relevant messages for today
Welcome to West Church LKN! A message from Rev. Dr. Andrea Smith: West is a group of people that worship together, online or at Lake Norman High School, Mooresville, NC. 9 AM online service on Sundays, 10 AM in-person. If you come to West on a Sunday morning, you’ll find folks dressed in shorts and tee-shirts or athletic apparel, some coming straight from their soccer game. In winter, a pair of jeans and sweatshirt is common. At West, “all” means all people are welcome, and we actually live out that core value. West is an inclusive, safe community and we are not ashamed to say that. We believe in being real and relevant. We want to meet you where you are in your life. You’re not going to hear that there are absolutes — all questions and all pathways of exploration are welcome. We practice what we understand to be the Jesus way, which is radical love and acceptance. We encourage you to ask questions and wrestle with what we say on a Sunday morning. We don’t invest a lot of money in facilities. We worship at Lake Norman High School through an amazing partnership with the Iredell School System and have a strong online community. By not having a dedicated building, we can invest our money in community missions. Major missions: Support a sister church and orphanage in Uganda. Produce an annual Back to School Bash, where 1,200 disadvantaged students receive shoes, clothing, and supplies so they’re ready for success in school. Ever feel like you need a little hope? Do you find it hard to find that hope?
Hope is achieved by remembering promises. Promises that we aren’t alone, we don’t have to be afraid, that we are engulfed in a Love so powerful, so all-encompassing, it never dies.
Despite whatever crap life throws at us, we can always have hope. In this message series we will explore how historical promises display hope.Sun, 10 Dec 2023 - 487 - Punching Holes in Darkness - God’s light is within

Our new Deconstructing Religion worship series looks at what is at the root of who we are and what we believe. Over the years we were taught to believe certain things. In today’s society, people are starting to turn away from what they have always been taught and told about religion. As a Christian community we are going to look at some of the things we have been taught and examine difficult passages in Holy Scripture and see what they really mean and really say to us.

- 464 - I Spy...Finding God Everywhere In Life
Father Richard Rohr writes,
“Have you ever noticed that the expression ‘the light of the world’ is used to describe the Christ (John 8:12), but that Jesus also applies the same to us?”
We need to start trusting our own aliveness so that we can be the light in the world for one another.
What does that mean?
It means listening to our gut when we don’t want to do something or act in a certain manner. The Spirit nudges us far more than we accept, much less realize.
This is what we are going to look at in this series . . . . Finding God in all things. Learning to be and share our Light.
Find joy.In all things.
Laughing. Smiling. Embracing things as they come. Living in each and every moment. In real-time.
Do we do that? Or do we sit in the past or worry about the future?
What would it take for you to wake up laughing tomorrow?
Ruminate on that.

Often we feel “stuck” and don’t even know how we got there.
Below are some common reasons why we get stuck. Recognizing and identifying the “why” helps us figure out how to escape the situation.
How stuck are you? Do any of the following apply to you?
- Cognitive overload, overwhelm, and burnout
- Unconscious self-limitation and self-sabotage
- Living with impostor syndrome, where you doubt your self-worth and capabilities.
- Unmanaged mental health conditions such as but not limited to depression or anxiety
- Limited vision - not recognizing and living by your “why” (Why ARE you on the path you are on? What drives you?)
- Lack of adequate support or resources both emotionally and/or physically (i.e., finances, family, community/friends)
- Perfectionism and fear of uncertainty
- Emotional conflict between your desires and what others expect from you
- Resistance to change
- Lack of a more profound sense of meaning or purpose
***These are taken from PsychCentral blog.
The bottom line is that when we fixate on negative things, we get stuck. Period.
What are you fixating on today?Mon, 05 Jun 2023 - 461 - No Huddles DaySun, 28 May 2023
- 460 - Greed: The Art of Letting Go
Did you know that there are more Self Storage Facilities (businesses, not only individual units) than there are McDonald's in the United States? The Self Storage industry also brings in $20 Billion MORE per year than McDonald's...that's wild!
In this sermon, Lexi Hernandez encourages us to look at greed through the lens of letting go. In what ways can we show greed that are outside money and possessions? Have you ever considered that we may be greedy about our time, our expectations of ourselves/others, within our relationships, etc.? It's not an easy pill to swallow, but is well worth the evaluation!
Explore this concept with us through this sermon.
Let us know what you think about this perspective in the comments!

How many of the 10 commandments do you know off the top of your head? Have you ever lived in fear of breaking those commandments, thinking God was out to get you if you had? Join us this week, for a special Mother's Day Sermon about selfless love.
Jesus always aired on the side of "loving the people". When we go into the world and be "love" to and for others, we not only change ourselves, but we have the opportunity to bring about change in the world.

“Just not, least you be judged” is a scripture verse we often hear. Believe it or not, the meaning all comes down to a comma in how we understand that verse and what it was probably intended to mean to be when Jesus said it.
This continues our series on Cancel Culture. What are some things you’d like or need to cancel out of your life? We live in a time where “cancel culture” is a real thing. We cancel things that are hurtful to humanity! But what if we need to cancel our own “stuff?”Shame. Guilt. Fear. Insecurities. Anger. And so much more. In this series we will discuss how we can cancel the things in our lives that rob us of our joy.

Sometimes we do things in life that cause negative outcomes. Things fall apart, despite our best efforts. Then . . . we beat ourselves up about them over and over again. Long after the event is over. We carry around guilt.
Guilt is a dangerous thing.
It causes us to experience anxiety, stress, sadness, feelings of worthlessness, low self-esteem, regret, loneliness, or critical self-talk.
In this sermon we talk about guilt. And also learn how to be free from it!
Even when things fall apart, the world keeps turning. So, no need to wallow in guilt.Sun, 30 Apr 2023 - 455 - Hurry Sickness

- 452 - Stopping to Stare
Palm Sunday sermon by Pastor Andrea Smith
As we are in our own journeys of Holy Week, may we ask ourselves the question, “Do we live in such a way that others would stop and stare?”(In a good way, by the way!)
Do we love so radically that others, after watching, are struck by the ways that we love?
Do we give so selflessly that others, after noticing how we give, find themselves wanting to be more selfless?
Do we strive to seek justice for all, so that others, after hearing our calling for equality, find themselves questioning their approach?
Those are just a few of the reasons that the life of Jesus caused such a stir that people rushed to the streets to stare at his entrance into Jerusalem.
Could we live today so that others would stare at us?

- 449 - Demons -- What is keeping you from living life to its fullest?
So often we think of “demons (or the devil)” as little red figures that walk around with pitchforks, horns, and spandex with the intention of derailing us.
However, demons are also the negative things in our lives that suck the life out of us.
So . . . what sucks the life out of you?
And no, the initial answer isn’t to go to a particular person that might be getting on your nerves right now!
Seriously, think about it for a minute . . . and be willing to identify it.
Negativity?
Fear?
Chronic Illness?
Insecurities?
Worry?
Job Pressures?
An unsustainable life pace?
Or there is a whole category of “emotional vampires.” Here are just a few examples of those:
Narcissists/Those in your life who only care about themselves
Critics
Sarcastic People
Controlling People
The Gospel of John tells us that Jesus said, “The thief enters only to steal, kill, and destroy. I came so that they could have life—indeed so that they could live life to the fullest.”
What is keeping you from living life to its fullest?
What demon is holding you back?
Let’s identify it and then claim the power of Christ to address it and then destroy it.Sun, 12 Mar 2023 - 448 - Love Gives It AllSun, 05 Mar 2023
- 447 - The Twists and Turns of Temptation
How do you deal with the deep temptations that face us all?
Remember Satan/Lucifer means “light bearer.”
And evil is never far away from shining light on things that will cause us to take the wrong twist or turn on our path.
Hiding our temptations and pretending they do not exist is not the answer.
We have a powerful example of Jesus being tempted and showing us how to withstand temptation. Each time he was confronted, he went within himself, relying on the power of God learned and expressed through the Hebrew Scriptures.
Click here if you’d like to read the passage from Matthew we read in worship yesterday that gives us insight into Jesus’ temptations.
What do you have within that will help you withstand temptation?
"No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation, he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it"
(1 Corinthians 10:13).
God always provides us with an escape plan.
We have to be willing to look for it, find it AND use it.
What if one step in overcoming our temptations is committing the verse above to memory?
Nothing is bigger than our ability to overcome it or withstand it if we are grounded and rely on God.

Why is it that we say we are fine when we aren't?
Maybe we don't want to get into the details. Or we don't want to burden others or be judged. Or . . . maybe we want to avoid the painful thoughts altogether!
We live in a culture of "Quiet Quitting." We don't give our all anymore because we are spent, we are "done." In order to rekindle our passion and find our joy, we have to recognize that we aren't necessarily fine.
In this message series, we are going to explore the reasons we do it, talk about how we can become vulnerable and be willing to admit where we struggle, learn to exist in the wilderness for a while, and see where our strengths lie so that we can conquer all hurdles that present themselves in our lives.

In this message we talk about the "Power of Listening!" We have 2 ears and 1 mouth . . . but do we really "get" what it means to listen? Remember, Jesus didn’t talk about being a better listener, he just did it. It was in the way he loved. He didn't come to be right, even though he ultimately had all the right answers. He came to reconcile.

- 416 - The Power Of... Breaking the Habit
40% of our actions are our habits, we don't even know we are doing them.
Habits have a powerful impact on our lives. What are your positive habits?
What are habits you have that cause harm to you or others? Our habits are driven by what we crave and the reward we receive from the actions we take to fulfill that craving.
For our bad habits, the difficult part is not just "kicking the habit" but instead figuring out what we TRULY crave that is causing the habit.
Here is an example - for smokers, it is not just about craving nicotine (although research has shown that it is a highly addictive substance). If that were the case, people would be able to quit smoking by using the patch or nicotine gum. Research has shown that only about 10% of smokers can stop the habit of smoking by using other means of receiving nicotine. Instead, it is about something more. Like connecting with others, going to a public area where you can smoke typically puts you in contact with other people, and that is often what people are craving, community, conversation, and togetherness. (Note this is just an example).
Aristotle puts it this way, "We are what we repeatedly do."
If that is the case, then what are you? What do you repeatedly do?
There are different components to the habits that we have:
Cue: the trigger that kicks off the habitual behavior. Cues that prompt routine behaviors, or habits, vary widely. They can take a lot of different forms. The Routine: the action that we have that works to fulfill that craving often it is our automatic actions The Reward is whatever the behavior (or routine) does for you.
We only do that which gives us rewards. Think about babies . . . they, as they age, develop habits. They cry for what they need, we give them what they need, and they learn that crying helps them fulfill their needs. Thus, crying becomes a reward. As they age and develop, we teach them new ways of receiving what they need instead of relying on negative behavior. We can break our habits by having new behaviors/routines to fulfill our reward. In doing so, we must rely on our willpower.
But it is important to know, we have a limited amount of willpower every day!
Once we've used up our willpower, that is when it is more difficult to withstand the bad habits.
As people of faith, we are given actions as outlined by the Apostle Paul relying on the teachings of Jesus, that allow us to develop positive habits.
Points from Romans 12:
Love from the center of who you are - no faking!
If it doesn't lead to love (if it is evil) - run from it, cling to that which is good.
No cursing under your breath!
Get along with others, don't be stuck up!
Make friends with people because of who they are, not what they can get you! Don't be "the great somebody!"
Don't hit back, instead discover the beauty in everyone!
Don't try to get even!
Bless your enemies! Get the best of evil by doing good!
The difference between who you want to be and who you are is what you do." - Charles Duhigg
What do you do?
As a church, our "habit" is loving others beyond ourselves. It is why we do what we do, like lead the Back to School Bash, a community event that empowers students to start school with the necessary school supplies, clothes, etc. while attending a fun, festival-like experience.
What habits do you have? Are your habits those that lead to good and lead to love?
