Thu, 24 Oct 2019 - 11min - 100 - BCBC - Podcast - S3EP013 - Caroline Gibbs - Gender Transition Coach
Welcome to our last Podcast for our month of October on Gender Identities, the Gender Spectrum, and Gender Transitions. We have had an amazing month, where we have spoken with experts on gender and transitions, and to several people about their personal journeys. Tomorrow we have our final Behind the Scenes blog for the year - so do not forget to check that out. But today is the final discussion on Gender. In this Episode: Today, Monkey and the Professor sit around the table and talk to Dr. Caroline Gibbs about steps involved in gender transitions - to facilitate healthy and balanced and successful transitions or, as Dr. Raj prefers - Gender Affirmation processes. Caroline Gibbs is the founder and director of The Transgender Institute, and is a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor and National Certified Counselor, nationally and internationally recognized as an educator, advocate, and provider for this population. She is also a partner in the International Center for Transgender Care. She understands the current DSM-5 diagnosis of Gender Dysphoria and differentiates among sexual identity, gender identity, gender expression, and sexual orientation. A Few Definitions: We discussed a few definitions - and Caroline wanted to point out that terminology has changed - both in the phrases allowed as well as in the change of definitions. With that in mind, she believes that gender is a hardwired construct that cannot be altered - it is how people feel they are as far as male, female, or in between. That feeling is what it is - although someone's external appearance may or may not reflect those feelings. Transgender is also a very broad term. It is an umbrella term that includes transsexual people (people whose gender identity does not match their physical selves), cross-dressers (predominantly male, heterosexual people, who enjoy dressing as women), and drag queens (crossdressers who dress as more famous women for sexual pleasure or for fun). Caroline feels that cross-dressers often have a varied transsexual identity. After time in therapy and life experience - they find themselves with a shift in their identity. There is no standard here nor has there been research. They may or may not ever move to the transgender part of the umbrella and may not transition. Gender dysphoria has many misconceptions in the world. In general, it means, very simply, discomfort. In some cases, it may be extreme discomfort. Adding the term gender in front of that means someone who has discomfort around their gender. This involves a mismatch in gender identity from that assigned at birth, and where they may present physically - and what they feel is internally their true gender. As the Professor suggested - their insides do not match their outsides. It can be a very serious issue. Transitioning is where someone makes a decision to journey to make the internal and external self-match. There are many different things that may happen to make that match - and many levels of matching. The goal is the removal of gender dysphoria, providing freedom and ease for the person. This is where Caroline's organization works - in helping people make the decision as to what the best choices for each individual would be. It is a goal of finding relief. The Transgender Institute Foundation: Caroline loves the story of how she arranged for these things to happen in her life. Around 25 years ago she met a group of transsexual individuals who were teaching clinicians on how to treat them and help them through their transitions. There were no standards or practices available at the time to facilitate their journey. This means that the people who were suffering the dysphoria were forced to create their own paths. This was done through a series of lectures and workshops. Over time, Caroline started dating one of the people in this community...
Tue, 30 Oct 2018 - 58min - 99 - BCBC - MondayMumblings - S1E013 - Transgender Current Issues
Introduction Of month topic: Issues Facing Trans/Intersex/Bi Of hosts Date. Note: .3-.5% of Americans = roughly 1,300,000 people Note on the GLAAD "Understanding" reports and National Center for Transgender Equality. Ways we'll be discussing the topic (Section Descriptions: Discrimination, Legal Challenges, Physical Safety) Section 1 - Discrimination Discrimination in Public Accommodations Public accommodations are places accessible to the public, such as retail stores, restaurants, parks, hotels, libraries, movie theatres, and banks. In a 2014 study conducted in Massachusetts, 65% of transgender people reported experiencing discrimination in a place of public accommodation in the past 12 months. Discrimination in Employment Transgender people experience pervasive discrimination at work. Between 13% and 47% of transgender workers report being unfairly denied a job,9 and 78% report being harassed, mistreated, or discriminated against at work, as shown in Currently, only 18 states have clear laws prohibiting employment discrimination on the basis of gender identity or expression (see Figure 3 on the next page).12 There is no federal law that explicitly prohibits discrimination against transgender employees, but there are some protections in place. Both the U.S. Attorney General and the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) have interpreted Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which prohibits discrimination "because of sex," to protect transgender workers. Discrimination in Housing. one in five transgender people (19%) in the United States have been refused a home or apartment and more than one in ten (11%) have been evicted because of their gender identity.21 Homelessness is a critical issue for transgender people, with one in five having experienced homelessness at some time in their lives because of discrimination and family rejection Discrimination in Education Schools are difficult places for transgender students as they regularly face discrimination, bullying, and harassment in elementary, secondary, and post-secondary institutions. In one survey, 40% of gender non-confirming youtha reported being frequently harassed by their peers and 37% reported frequent verbal harassment and name calling.26 Across the United States, only 13 states have laws that clearly protect students against discrimination because of their gender identity and/or expression only 18 states expressly prohibit bullying on the basis of gender identity and/or expression (see Figure 6).29 A study in Massachusetts found that 19% of transgender respondents had postponed or avoided necessary care due to mistreatment or discrimination from health care workers. Section 2 – Legal Challenges Inaccurate Identity Documents Official identity documents—such as drivers' licenses, birth certificates, and passports—that do not match a transgender person's gender identity greatly complicate that person's life. Non-matching identification can obstruct employment and travel, as well as expose transgender people to harassment, violence, refusal of service, job loss, and other problems. Only one-fifth (21%) of transgender people who have transitioned to living in accordance with their gender identity have been able to update all of their IDs and official records with the correct gender, and onethird (33%) had updated none of their IDs or records, Marriage and Family Transgender people can be heterosexual, gay, lesbian, or bisexual, but regardless of their sexual orientation, they can often...

Tue, 09 Oct 2018 - 1h 09min - 88 - BCBC - Nugget - S3 - Dr. Barbara Chubak talks to us about gender and sex
Welcome to the first Nugget of October 2018 - our month on Gender Identity, the Gender Spectrum, and Gender Transitions. We are really excited about this month so make sure you checked out our three earlier episodes this week - Monday, October 1's Monday Mumbling on the Gender Spectrum, Tuesdays Podcast with Dr. Raj Purohit of Mount Sinai on Gender Affirmation Surgery and Procedures and Monkeys Blog yesterday on his Gender Identity Experiences. In Today's Episode: We are really excited about Dr. Chubak's return to the barnyard. If you did not catch her earlier visit - you can go back and listen to her from our month on Professional Services where she spoke to us about good ways to find a doctor that will be your partner in your health journey. Today, Monkey got to sit down with Dr. Chubak again to talk about Gender. As a reminder, Barbara Chubak is a medical doctor at Mount Sinai and an assistant professor with the Department of Urology. She did many things before becoming a doctor, ranging from secretarial work to being a bioethicist, She is full of so much information and knowledge - we knew she would be a frequent visitor and long-term resident of the barnyard. In Dr. Chubak's work - she has an intake form where she asks new patients to her practice to fill out a questionnaire. Her first contact with patients, even before meeting them face to face, is to include the questions of preferred name and preferred pronoun as part of her standard intake. She finds this helpful to really relate to her patients. Of course, she does sometimes get pushback from her patients with these questions. She uses those pushbacks to initiate conversations as to the reasons why people are pushing back and why she feels it is important. Gender Identities and Terminologies: As always, we do like to find out the definitions people use for some of the common terms around each month's topics. Cisgender - having a gender identity that is consonant with one's biological sex. In other words, they match. Transgender -This definition is not universally true as trans-culture is growing and evolving and accepting more in the realm of gender fluidity and non-binary genders. Transgender started its foundations under the binary gender construct where there was a female gender and a male gender. The idea behind transgender was that someone would transition their gender so that their outsides matched their internal identification of gender, which is at the opposite end of the spectrum from the assigned sex at birth. Gender Transitions are the processes by which someone changes their physical appearance to match their gender identity through a series of physical changes. There are many different choices that can be made along that pathway and many extremes or minimums that can be chosen. Changes may be hormone therapy or surgical actions. There are additional socialization trainings and re-educations that can be undergone as well. Urology Concerns in Transgender Patients At every step of the way through the transitioning process, there are different needs from a medical standpoint. The one constant are the emotional needs of the people who are transitioning. It is critical to provide a supportive, reasonably non-judgemental environment so these individuals can feel comfortable and safe. The safety is critical because transgender people are going through extraordinary changes. Transgender Youth: Friends and family and a supportive network is really important. Moral and emotional support is really essential. This is even more important when it is children that are transgendered who are going through transition processes. The current medical guidelines around youth are pretty strongly in support of delaying puberty changes in order to simplify the transitioning process once the child is grown enough to provide their own...

Wed, 03 Oct 2018 - 09min - 86 - BCBC - Podcast - S3EP009 - Dr, Raj Purohit - Gender Affirmation Surgery
Welcome to the first podcast of October 2018. This is our month on topics around the theme of Gender Identity, the Gender Spectrum, and Gender Transitions. We have a really packed month - with 5 amazing Monday Mumblings, 5 podcasts, 5 blogs, and 4 nuggets. Make sure you stay tuned in to all of our episodes! In This Episode: Today Monkey and the Professor got to chat with Dr. Raj Purohit. Dr. Raj was born in Rajasthan, India (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rajasthan) but grew up in the midwest - he is a Michigander at heart. He left Michigan to study history and political theory in college - at Williams. He believes that background certainly informs many of his decisions and things he is very passionate about - he grew up in a family of artists and doctors. In medical school, he took a year off to apprentice with a painter in Rajasthan. He attributes his apprenticeship and painting to have a significant impact on how he views surgery. He came back to the US, finished his medical training at Columbia, went on to UCSF for his internship in surgery and residency in urology. He did a Fellowship in pelvic reconstructive surgery - this is where he developed an interest in cis gendered patients originally - in reconstructing the urethra from trauma and complications, and ultimately shifted his focus to developing the Gender Affirmation Surgery program at Mount Sinai a year ago. Dr. Raj made the decision to go into medicine because of his strong family background in medicine, where many of his family members are also doctors. His wife and sister-in-law are both doctors as well. You could consider medicine to be a family business. Even with that, something sparked within him when he entered the operating room for the first time - it was a sense of belonging and home and passion. He sees the surgical suite as a controlled environment, whereas a surgeon, he is an artist - painting the body and bringing out the beauty from within the canvas. Surgery is where he finds his balance in both art and medicine. We started off with a very high-level overview of what is involved in Gender Reassignment. To begin with, the preferred term is Gender Affirmation - because what is really happening is helping the person become externally what they are already internally - it merely affirms their gender identity. At no point are they really assigning a gender to the patient - that patient is already the gender they are on the path to appearing as. We really love that terminology and phrasing. As Dr. Raj states - the doctors are not assigning or giving the patient a new gender - they are only uncovering what is already there, the gender the person already feels exists. (https://amzn.to/2xOODmq) So - Gender Affirmation Surgery typically involves some level of reconstruction on the body so that the body will fit the gender that the person already identifies as. Patients have already gone through hormonal therapy and have had changes in their bodies to reflect the correct gender profile. These surgeries are broadly split into two groupings - Top Surgery and Bottom Surgery (https://www.plasticsurgery.org/reconstructive-procedures/gender-confirmation-surgeries). For transwomen (assigned male at birth, but identify as female) the surgery may entail: facial feminization to transform the masculine features of the face to a more feminine appearance (https://www.healthline.com/health/transgender/facial-feminization-surgery) vocal chord surgery (https://health.howstuffworks.com/medicine/surgeries-procedures/transgender-voice-surgery.htm) breast augmentation to enhance the size and shape of the breasts to create a more feminine appearance to the chest Creation of a vagina through a surgery called vaginoplasty https://www.plasticsurgery.org/cosmetic-procedures/vaginal-rejuvenation/vaginoplasty This typically includes removal of the testes as well For transmen (assigned female at birth but identify as a male) the surgery may entail: (https://www.ftmsurgery.net/)...

Tue, 25 Sep 2018 - 1h 08min - 81 - BCBC - MondayMumblings - S1E008 - Consent Accidents and Violations
Welcome to the fourth Monday Mumbling for September 2018 - this is our month on Consent and we are really excited to have an entire month dedicated to speaking about consent. It is our hope that we can talk about consent, educate a few people and have a bit of fun doing it so it is easier to learn. We believe there are so many more things about consent than simply talking about sexual consent - and throughout the month we try to shed some light. If we missed anything, please drop us a note and let us know! Today Monkey and the Madame sit down to talk about Consent Violations and Consent Accidents. There are a lot of questions about if consent violations can or cannot be accidents, and a range of ideas of what may be involved in a consent violation. Monkey and the Madame walk you through a discussion of examples and frameworks to help you understand the difference and how to navigate both situations - because if a boundary has been reached - there is still pain and an impact on the people involved. Body Image and the Media
Miss Laura and the Madame
Miss Laura and the Madam take a journey through memory lane, recalling images in the media, movies, TV, advertisements, and some of the teachings from their parents, teachers, and mentors growing up. They have a discussion, including sharing stories of the impact these images had on them as young women - and what they see today in the media that perpetuates stereotypes.
The result - a wish list of things that they would like to see moving forward - changes in the media and in some of the materials that are provided to our youth and to everyone - to better reflect the reality of the world we live in. A world without as much or any photoshop dieting, enforced stereotypes, and whitewashing of iconic characters in Movies and TV series.

Tue, 14 Aug 2018 - 1h 13min - 57 - BCBC - Monday Mumblings - S1E002 - A History of Body Positivity and Body Liberation
Background Body Positivity may seem to be a modern movement as the hashtags and Instagram ready photos and images threaten to take over your feeds on a daily basis. The fight for the freedom to love our bodies is older than the internet - going back as long as we have had our bodies. As long as there have been human beings coexisting in groups of 2 or more people there have been ongoing struggles and battles to decide the "best" way or "right way" to be. Historically the battles were not always about the same things. Our ideas of what the perfect body has changed over time. In earlier days it was about the body type that was most likely to survive being run down by a saber-toothed tiger - lean and fast or strong and bulky. In areas where food was scarce, it was a display of wealth or success to have a body that was plump. Long ago in China, it was a symbol of wealth and status to be able to maintain a woman whose feet were bound. In Japan, foot binding was also a practice, specifically for dancers and courtesans. What this means is - the ideal body, the idea of beauty, of body perfection is simply that - a picture. It is not a firm thing, written in stone. It is an ever-changing image - fluid with the times. Today's ideal bodies are described in many terms, including: Gender Identity Race Age Ability Size Hair color Ideal body types are perpetuated by the media, by our stories, by the books we read and by the nature of our lives. Around the world, there are vast ranges of what ideal bodies or beauty is defined as. https://gizmodo.com/photoshop-reveals-how-different-countries-see-body-imag-1724498667 Body Positivity versus Body Liberation There are two semi-parallel, semi opposing movements that can be designated under the body positive movement. Monkey and Miss Laura discuss these two movements in the first Monday Mumbling of August (this aired on August 6 - so check it out). The first is the Body Positive Movement. The second is the Body Liberation Movement. http://queerfatfemme.com/2016/08/29/body-liberation-activism-in-five/ A Brief History I am honestly not sure that anyone could create an accurate timeline of the different cultures globally, and their movement towards body positivity, body liberation, or body acceptance. We absolutely welcome anyone's input on actions that we have missed here. There have been many instances in history where things were done to create and attain an ideal body - that was later determined to be damaging to people in a physical or health or wellbeing manner - or that simply changed for other reasons. We are going to select just a few instances: Feudal Japan Foot Binding - https://heianjapanweb.wordpress.com/2016/10/17/blog-post-title/ This practice started in and around 1000 AD and continued through around 1750 AD. Foot binding originated in the tenth or eleventh century by dancers and courtesans. This was a practice where a young girl's feet were tightly wrapped. This usually caused the bones to break, thus causing extreme pain. There are many aspects to foot binding that relate or go back to social influence. Foot binding was first found to be generally accepted among the elite families. However, later this practice became more common and known throughout society. Mothers started the force this painful procedure onto their daughters as a way of enhancing their marriage possibilities and gaining more attention from their husbands. This procedure soon turned and started to become viewed as a right of passage. There were many health issues with this practice, including infection. It also served to force women to rely on men for almost everything. Mon, 13 Aug 2018 - 47min - 56 - BCBC - Nugget - S3-E0002 - Eda Gorbis - Body Dysmorphia
Welcome to the August month on Body Positivity. We are really excited to come back with our third Season and second Nugget. Toda, in this mini-podcast episode we have Monkey speaking with Dr. Eda Gorbis from Los Angeles, CA. Dr. Gorbis is an expert in anxiety disorders and has been working with these disorders since 1999. She fell in love with the idea of body dysmorphic disorder and started to specialize in that. Most of us have something we don't like about our appearance — a crooked nose, an uneven smile, or eyes that are too large or too small. And though we may fret about our imperfections, they don't interfere with our daily lives. But people who have body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) think about their real or perceived flaws for hours each day. They can't control their negative thoughts and don't believe people who tell them that they look fine. Their thoughts may cause severe emotional distress and interfere with their daily functioning. They may miss work or school, avoid social situations and isolate themselves, even from family and friends, because they fear others will notice their flaws. Thu, 24 May 2018 - 08min - 21 - BCBC - Nugget - s2e021 - Robin Mandell - Ready Sex Able
About this episode... This weeks nugget continues our discussion on sex, disability, and accessibility. We get to hear Monkey chatting with Robin Mandell - a writer, health and sexuality advocate, volunteer and much more! Robin resides in Seattle, WA. Robin has been working in the sexuality advocate area for around 8 years now and spends a lot of time speaking at different conferences, bringing the disability piece into those situations. She also spends a lot of time reaching out to people online in public spaces like facebook and twitter. She casually reaches out and speaks with disabled folks as well in a one on one format. She is modest and does not believe she has had a huge impact on the community, but she does like to think she has been able to reach out to a few people. Her goal has always been to reach out to disabled people about sexuality and to the general public about disability and sexuality. Robin has created a website called Ready Sexy Able. This site is really an extension of who Robin is and is aimed at being an online library. Robin likes to talk about the many bright and amazing voices out there - speaking really candidly about their own sexualities and challenges. She wanted Ready Sex Able to be a bigger picture, pulling those voices together into a single site, an online library, and resource. Robin aims to highlight voices that may not be heard as much. You can find Robin at... www.readysexyable.com https://twitter.com/readysexyable About Robin Mandell... Robin Mandell is a writer, healthy sexualities advocate, and yoga teacher. She has been working in the sexuality field as a writer, speaker, and volunteer educator for the past 9 years, and calls on her experience studying Women's Studies, volunteering with crisis hotlines, and, more recently, training as a yoga teacher, to inform her work. In 2015, Robin founded Ready, Sexy, Able, an online clearinghouse of sexuality and disability information and resources. She hopes that highlighting a variety of voices and experiences will encourage people to think about both sexuality and disability, separately and together, with more depth and creativity. When she isn't writing or talking about sexuality and relationships, Robin can be found reading quirky novels and nonfiction, practicing yoga, exploring her new home in the Pacific Northwest, going to the symphony, browsing Etsy, and spending time with her partner. Three of Robin's favorite things: dogs, tea, and gluten-free cookies. Help the BCBC show thrive... Thu, 24 May 2018 - 14min - 20 - BCBC - Podcast - s2e17 - Eva Sweeney
About this episode... Miss Laura and Monkey are super excited to meet today with Eva Sweeney. Before we start we have a couple of notes to go over with you. First, this episode may have some longer pauses due to the communication styles - just be patient dear listeners - we promise it is worth it. Second, this interview is recorded over a speakerphone to accommodate Eva's needs so it may be a bit noisier than you are used to - again - it is still worth it! We did some things in the audio edit to minimize this but it still happens! And now, on to the show… Eva Sweeney is a gender queer disabled person who works as a sex educator and freelance writer. She writes a lot on topics around sex, disability, and queer culture. She is joined by her assistant, Cameron who voices for Eva. Eva would like people to know she is just a normal person and is not at all inspirational just for getting out of bed. Eva has cerebral palsy, which for her means she uses a wheelchair to get around and she speaks by using a laser pointer mounted to her head and a letter board. This board is read by whoever she is speaking to or her aide. She needs assistance with almost all physical functions. She is in control of her life - she just needs a little help. For this interview, she pre-wrote out the answers to many of the questions. For any follow-up questions, you will hear her aide help her as she uses the board to respond. Eva shares her ideas on maintaining a positive body image - and discusses how she does not conform to the "mainstream" and responds with "Fuck that - I am hot!". She is overflowing with self-confidence. As far as advice to people on maintaining a positive body image - Eva says "Just be yourself and don't give a fuck what other people think of you." One final message from Eva - "Just stay open minded." About Eva Sweeney Eva Sweeney is a 35-year-old genderqueer disabled female who works primarily as a sex educator and freelance writer. Her topics include disabilities and sex, gender, and queer culture. She is also the creator of the documentary, Respect: The Joy of Aides. She has been doing Sex and Disability workshops for 15 years and started doing this work because she found a huge lack of good sex positive information for people with disabilities. Eva wrote the book Queers on Wheels and has traveled the country giving workshops about Sex and Disability. She is also available for private consultations.Where to Find Eva... Fri, 18 May 2018 - 08min - 17 - BCBC - Nugget - s2e020 - Susan of SexSupport.org
In this episode... Today's Nugget Guest is Susan Fitzmaurice - a lifelong sex and disability advocate, parent of a child with a disability, and owner of the website SexSupport.org. Susan's Sex Support has been around since 1995 - perhaps one of the oldest sex support sites out there. The organization started off to support the needs of parents who had children with disabilities. Susan's own son was born with developmental disabilities. When she looked for information to help support her son as he grew up, she could find absolutely nothing out there. Over time she accumulated a large amount of information and decided to put it out there on a website for other people who had questions so they would have a resource to go to for their own questions and to help support them support their children. The site became a combination site for both professionals and for people with disabilities or their support network (of parents and family members) - to help with healthy growth and development for children with disabilities. Susan's site is primarily informational but it is a sex support site and does have a store. There are only ever a dozen products or so on that store, specifically geared towards beginners and introductory sex toys. These are specifically described and offered without images of naked people so that this site would be more widely used. Wed, 16 May 2018 - 09min - 15 - BCBC - Podcast - s2e16 - Tuppe Owens - Sex & Disability Activist
About this episode... Today we talk with Tuppy Owens and her work as a sex-positive activist and helping disabled individuals find their sexuality. But trust me, Tuppy has been a strong force in the UK and world sex and disability scene since the 70s. She has even been seen on stage performing burlesque to celebrate her birthdays... but you should listen to find out more about that... A little about Tuppy... Tuppy Owens was born in Cambridge. She gained a degree in zoology from Exeter University, and then worked in ecology in Africa and Trinidad. She settled in London and worked as a scientific administrator at the Natural Environment Research Council. Then, in the late 1960s, she established a sex education book publishing company, for which she wrote and published The Sex Maniac's Diary successfully between 1972 and 1995, and which she operated as a thriving business from her Mayfair flat — for example, the 1975 Sex Maniac's Diary was launched in August 1974 with a reception at the Bristol Hotel in London which was reported on the following day in the Financial Times. Tuppy Owens remains active in running Outsiders. At the same time, she also advises the promoter of the Sexual Freedom Ball to fund Outsiders, and the organizers of the fundraiser, The Erotic Awards, now called The Sexual Services and Entertainment Awards. Owens is now the chair of the Sexual Freedom Coalition. Back in the 90s Owens worked campaigning with Prostitution Pride, parades through London, which was funded by Arcadia events in North London. Owens has been working with the Bath Institute of Medical Engineering in the hope that they will be able to create sex toys that can be used by disabled people who, without them, cannot masturbate. Owens will be the editor of a forthcoming website, The School of Sex for Disabled People, which is being created by sexually experienced disabled people and those who provide them with sexual services. She is currently writing her autobiography. Mon, 14 May 2018 - 05min - 13 - BCBC - Nugget - s2e019 - Julie Christensen - PTSD - Disability and Sexuality Accessibility Month
About this episode... Julie Christensen is back in this episode and chats with Monkey and Miss Laura about PTSD as a form of disability and why it may impact people in their health, well being and sexual sense of well being. To start, PTSD is defined as Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. This is a mental health condition that is triggered by exposure to a terrifying event, even a life-threatening event. Symptoms of PTSD may include avoidance, hypervigilance, being afraid of things, nightmares, flashbacks re-experiencing things, and feeling disconnected from others and even from yourself. There are of course more symptoms - these are just a few. There is also a complex PTSD that results from years of exposure to unhealthy relationships or sexual abuse or other situations. Some people are aware they have PTSD, and many others are not aware, even having repressed memories of the traumatic events that lead to PTSD. About Julie... Julie Christensen is a licensed marriage and family therapist and a frequent flier with the BCBC show. Julie is a therapist at It's Possible Therapy who specializes in: Grief Trauma Mood Disorders Anxiety Disorders Spirituality Holy Fire Reiki Healing Contact Julie... It's Possible Therapy Julie Christensen, M.A., L.M.F.T Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist 3175 Sunset Blvd, Suite 107H Rocklin CA 95677 Phone/Text: 916-276-4354 Email: Julie@itspossibletherapy.com Show notes... Julie goes into a few ways to identify PTSD within yourself and within others. These are only a few possibilities - please note that this is in no way a stand-in for seeking professional assistance. When looking in a sexual context, Julie suggests that your partner may notice things if you are suffering from PTSD - lack of enjoyment, orgasm, response, and more. Monkey asked Julie about how someone can help a partner, friend, or loved one to identify and work with PTSD. She encourages communication between all the parties, offering couples therapy, taking online tests, and additional modes of communication. PTSD was formerly identified only as associated with military experiences - although now it is much more widely identified as a real and serious issue. There are a lot more tools to identify problems and to treat PTSD. Julie is a big fan of EMDR - Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing. EMDR is a psychotherapy treatment that was originally designed to alleviate the distress associated with traumatic memories by applying bilateral stimulation to release memories and help rewrite those memories. This can take those memories from a traumatic rating of 10 down to a 0 and remove the trauma associated forever. Other alternative treatments like LSD were addressed. LSD treatments were actually historically for PTSD until it was outlawed. This treatment is currently considered "outlawed" due to the legal status of LSD. There are also many people that use alternative methods of BDSM to help deal with associated trauma, specifically around sexual trauma. Negotiation and being honest and open about experiences and a history of critical review in these situations to try to avoid further damage. Julie encourages people going along this path to be safe and open and extra aware of histories and what people may need. Julie offers the advice of "Take it one day at a time, love yourself, and recognize you will probably not resolve this in a week or two so be patient. Get good help. If you are working with a therapist you do not like, get another one." Can you help the BCBC Show thrive? About this episode... A sex worker is defined as a person employed in the sex industry. Tue, 01 May 2018 - 1h 02min - 7 - BCBC - Nugget - s2e017 - Michael - Sex Workers Month
About this episode... In our final nugget for the April monthly topic of Sex workers, Miss Laura chats with Michael - a member of the kink community, a Shibari rigger, and someone who has worked on photo shoots in and around the sex work industry for many years. He also identifies as a wolf in our barnyard - believing these animals to amazing, social, and are protective and loyal in their packs. He has always respected wolves - knowing they do what is best for their family. Side note: Shibari is intricate rope bondage using some traditional Japanese techniques and of course a few modern twists. Michael considers himself to be a part of the sex worker community through his rigging for photo shoots, creating promotional pieces for cam girls and others who are working, as well as someone who has dated and is involved with several people who work in that industry. He shares a few of his experiences with partners in the sex work industry. A commonly heard sentiment in many of our episodes across a range of topics, he cites that communication is a key in any relationship to making things work, especially when you are involved with someone working in the sex trade. He suggests that you need to be able to communicate clearly with them, especially since part of their job is to be intimate with others - to make sure you understand where you stand in their life and they are able to clearly communicate where you stand and what they need from you to support them. This is critical in dealing with any jealousy issues that can come up. A little about Michael... I've been a part of the BDSM community of the San Francisco Bay Area for a very long time. If you want background on my various kinks and fetishes, I can tell you that all of the stories will start with "So there was this girl..." I have been a shibari rigger, working with rope and using it to bring accentuate the beauty of the human form for somewhere around ten years, and have trained with Two Knotty Boys and with Midori. I've taught shibari classes. I've tied for photo shoots and had my rope work find it's way into a magazine or two (including a horror magazine) and onto the front page of the now unfortunately defunct zivity.com. Around seven years ago, "there was this girl" who had something of a fetish for hypnosis, and the erotic applications of it, so being quite smitten with her, as well as intrigued with hypnosis and fascinated with the human mind, I went off and got certified as a hypnotist. Well, the relationship didn't last, but hypnosis (especially its erotic and BDSM applications, but also the things that I could use it for to help those I cared about) kept my attention, became something of a passion of mine. I've gone so far as to seek certification as a clinical hypnotherapist. I help with a quarterly Goth/Industrial dance club and BDSM dungeon down in Santa Cruz California called "House of Nox". While my housemates are either spinning a set at the turntables, doing a tarot card reading, or perhaps playing with someone on the spanking bench or St. Andrew's Cross, I can be found with my portable suspension frame, 700+ feet of rope, and various toys, tying people up or working them over with a violet wand. I really enjoy giving new people the chance to experience things that they have always wanted to try, but never had the opportunity or perhaps courage to go for before, and dip their toes into the wonderful and wild world of kink in a safe, sane, and consensual way. Where to Find Michael and Other Links: The club I help with can be found here: http://www.facebook.com/houseofnox13 http://twitter.com/HouseNox A great resource for learning the art of shibari can be found here: http://www.knottyboys.com/ Want to show your appreciation to the BCBC Crew and Help BCBC Succeed?!?! Tue, 17 Apr 2018 - 52min - 4 - BCBC - Nugget - s2e015 - LJ Woolston - Sex Worker Month - LGBTQ Youth Advocate
About this episode... Our second nugget for this month on sex workers is with LJ Woolston - an advocate, artist social worker. He works with LGBT youth - and often that means that youth who are involved in sex work, either through choice or for survival. He is also the widower of Diana Hemingway - an amazing transgender sex worker, activist, and advocate for rights. He speaks to us a little bit about his work, Diana, and how he works to honor her legacy. About LJ Woolston... Landon "LJ" Woolston, MSW, is a youth worker, an advocate, artist, a queer and trans-Miami native, and a Point Foundation alumni. Through his own personal journey navigating social justice issues, LJ dedicated himself to using his privilege to interrupt oppression, standing alongside and uplifting the narratives of those who are most marginalized in our communities. LJ has been working directly with LGBTQ youth experiencing homelessness in Miami for over four years. He also develops and delivers training for service providers all throughout Miami, training on topics such as LGBTQ competency, trans competency, supporting queer and trans youth in varied spaces (hospitals, shelters, schools, camps, etc.), and harm reduction approach for serving young people engaged in commercial or survival sex work. Additionally, LJ uses one of his hobbies, photography, as a form of activism -- a means of sparking critical dialogue around body and sex positivity, gender, and race. His images of trans people and trans bodies have been published in several queer publications and The New Times, and he has had several local photography shows. LJ sees photography as a particularly powerful, radical medium for trans and queer folks to explore themselves, and to document their varied paths toward self-discovery, body-love, and self-love. In December of 2016, LJ lost the love of his life, Diana Hemingway, a prominent queer and trans activist, sex worker, and sex worker rights advocate, when she died by suicide. Diana suffered from mental illness, experienced homelessness several times in her life, and was also discarded by multiple families on her journey toward being her most authentic self. Although an artist in several traditional mediums (photography, sculpture, jewelry making, writing), Diana considered sensuality to be her greatest art. Her hope was to channel a lifetime of triumph and suffering into her work, emotionally connecting the intersections of gender identity, sexuality, disability, feminism, and sex work, to advance understanding and empathy of the multiple forms of oppression that she and others faced. LJ seeks to honor Diana through his work in youth homelessness, as well as in his volunteerism and activism. He is most committed to affirming and empowering queer youth. By equipping young people with community support, resources, and self-advocacy tools, LJ hopes to see the eventual elimination of the many barriers that prevent queer young people from living long, whole, authentic lives.
