- 1417 - From the Vault | Dr Sam Bunting on the power and beauty of mental health.
This episode was originally published in April 2023.
Dr Sam Bunting has been a familiar face on the beauty scene for some time. A cosmetic dermatologist who now has her own skincare line Dr Sam’s, Sam wanted to bridge the gap between medical dermatology and beauty.
But as one of my go-to skincare experts, in my role as a beauty journalist, I’ve also learned that Sam understands the emotional stress of ‘bad skin’. We both suffered terribly from teenage acne and know all too well how much it can impact confidence and one’s sense of self.
It’s these conversations I’ve had with Sam over the years that have led to broader, more deep and meaningful conversations about life, love and much more, which is why I was curious to hear the life lessons she’s learned, the challenges she’s had to overcome and how, as someone who can feel as though the world gets a little too much at times, she copes with the lows as well as the highs.
Dr Sam’s is available now.

Wed, 08 May 2024 - 11min - 1415 - From the Vault | Ruby Wax on mental health journeys, finding the good in the world and why you should always be hopeful.
This episode was first published in February 2022.
My guest on this episode of the podcast is Ruby Wax. She is a writer, comedian, mental health campaigner and author and someone whose interviews over the years inspired me so it’s quite something to be interviewing her for this podcast…
Ruby joins me in this episode to talk about her latest book And Now For The Good News - the much-needed tonic for our frazzled world.
If you feel utterly distraught at the constant negative news cycle - the climate crisis, increasing costs of living, injustice, Covid and, as this episode goes live, the invasion of Ukraine by Russia, then you may have stopped searching for the light of hope on the horizon.
You may just assume that there’s only bad news out there in the world to be shared. Here’s the thing, if all we ever expect is bad news. If we assume that there is only bad news that chain reaction can make us feel hopeless, and helpless and fall into that space where we wake up in the morning and think ‘what’s the point?’
As someone whose particular shape and shade of depression took this form, a chronic apathy that eventually suffocated everything, I see this bad news cycle as something that can trigger the same feelings - even in the most hopeful of souls.
Perhaps Ruby thought this too, which is why she went on a global search to find the good search.
If you don’t know the light is there, you won’t know to see it. And so Ruby compiled all her findings into the book so we can all see there is hope and to equip us with a positive approach for a brighter world and, most importantly, for a better collective mental wellbeing.
Ruby has been open about her own mental health issues over the years, something that was a source of great comfort to me at a time when I needed it, so during our conversation, I also quizzed her about how she emerged from her own struggles, the coping mechanisms she put in place and what she learned from a masters degree in cognitive-based therapy from Oxford University.
I came away from the conversation feeling so inspired, not least because speaking to Ruby it was a reminder to always be curious about the world around you rather than scared of it, how vulnerability can immediately neutralise tension and how, though it might feel hard sometimes, it’s important to look for and follow the light, because it is there.

Sun, 05 May 2024 - 1h 03min - 1414 - Johann Hari | What you REALLY need to know about Ozempic.
Weight loss drugs are a hot topic, but are they a magic pill or is there a dark side to drugs such as Ozempic? Johann Hari has spent years investigating the genesis of the drug, how it works, as well as the benefits and the risks, plus he is also taking it. In this episode, we discuss how impactful these drugs could be on society, the risks that go hand-in-hand with taking them and why we've been conditioned to eat the kinds of food that could make us need these drugs in the first place.

Mon, 29 Apr 2024 - 3min - 1412 - From the Vault | Sabrina Cohen-Hatton on Exceeding All Expectations
This episode was originally published in March 2023.
One of the great privileges of creating this podcast is getting to see the world through the lens of other people’s experiences. Seeing the world through Sabrina’s eyes was utterly enthralling.
She experienced homelessness in her teens, now holds one of the most senior positions in the Fire Brigade and has multiple qualifications making her an expert leading international expert on risk-critical decision-making in crises.
I ask all my guests, ‘What’s your relationship like with risk?’ and as someone whose day job involves dealing with something as unpredictable as fire, Sabrina’s answers are a perspective I hadn’t heard before.
What an incredible guest, and now friend, whose primary mission in life is to pay it forward.

Wed, 24 Apr 2024 - 18min - 1410 - From the Vault | Anna Mathur on how to overcome People Pleasing
One thing about interviewing psychotherapists is how tempting it can be to open up about the things that I am personally struggling with, or have struggled with. It’s not something I intended to do but in navigating Anna Mathur’s life lessons we stumbled upon the territory of people pleasing and, well, that was it.
Both of us have found ourselves crippled by the effects of people pleasing and these have shown up in Anna’s life in ways that have had a huge impact.
I always open the show by asking my guests what their relationship with risk is like and it’s interesting that a big risk for Anna, and me, was to put ourselves first.
If you’re afflicted with the disease to please then this episode is definitely for you.

Wed, 17 Apr 2024 - 19min - 1408 - From the vault | Poppy Delbridge on how to transform your life.
When it comes to alternative therapy I am, by nature and also from years of working as a journalist in the health, beauty and wellness space, a cynic. For years, I’d get drawn into to fads and trends by their razzle-dazzle and now, to avoid this, I like to see proof in the shape of data, clinical trials and evidence.
So you may be surprised to see Poppy Delbridge, aka The Tapping Queen, as a guest on the show. Tapping is a form of therapy that involves tapping your face and upper body to release stress, minimise trauma and ‘raise your emotional baseline’. But, despite sounding ‘woo woo’ has a raft of evidence from neuroscience, and psychology that proves the claims around its benefits.
This podcast is about learning from my guests' life lessons and given how integral tapping has been to Poppy, in times of trauma, change and flux, it was a fascinating insight into Poppy and how she has dealt with life’s challenges.
Poppy’s book Tapping In is available now.

This episode was originally published in January 2022
We're not multitasking, the truth is that our focus is so scattered that we're slowly losing our ability to pay attention. Yes, we can blame our phones and all those tantalising apps that seduce us from our home screens, but there's a lot more at play and that's what Johann Hari has spent years investigating, speaking psychologists, sociologists, psychiatrists and more to find out what's really going on.

Wed, 03 Apr 2024 - 15min - 1404 - From the Vault | Andrea McLean on escaping toxic relationships and finding your passion.
Andrea McLean is one of those people you already feel as though you know. Not least because she's been a familiar face on British television for two decades but because she has such an easy, warm, open and welcoming way with everyone she meets. And let me tell you, in the flesh, this magnetism is even more charming than you could imagine. She is also blessed with a dry wit and an excellent side-eye!
After years anchoring the liveliest panel on TV, the prime-time show Loose Women, she is now focused on her website and app This Girl is On Fire, which focuses on supporting women (and soon men) through midlife. It's not just her day job, it's a calling. Having navigated her own mental health struggles, crises of confidence and a constant drive to want to do better and be better, Andrea is committed to passing on and sharing everything that has worked for her with those who feel the same.
I open each podcast by asking my guest 'what's your relationship like with risk?' and, as you can imagine, Andrea's answer, as someone who walked away from one of the most coveted jobs for women in broadcasting, is an incredible one... We discuss being in bad relationships, trying to make a bad thing work, knowing when to listen to advice - and when to ignore it - and why admitting you're wrong can sometimes be the greatest gift.
Andrea was so open and honest and I'm thrilled to share this conversation with you...

Sun, 31 Mar 2024 - 1h 08min - 1403 - From the Vault | Estée Lalonde's greatest life lesson to date.
This episode was originally published in February 2023.
'm so glad to welcome Estée Lalonde back to the podcast, especially as this conversation coincides with some exciting developments in her professional and personal life. There's her body care brand Mirror Water and a new relationship...
Her career is a truly incredible one: she followed her boyfriend to London, became a part of the beauty blogging community and has gone on to make her social media and Youtube a wildly successful business. She has shared her life with millions of followers and as she evolves from influencer to businesswoman, she's opening up about the highs and lows of taking huge risks, knowing what you want from life, people and relationships and why you have to advocate for yourself.
I've known Estée for a few years now and I always come away from time spent with her feeling better for having seen the world through her eyes and, I'm just going to say it, I think this might be the best conversation I've had with her in the time we've known each other.
Estée is always honest, real and straight-talking so hearing her share her life lessons with no filter whatsoever was a real eye-opener. I learned a lot and I hope you do too!

Thu, 28 Mar 2024 - 1h 04min - 1402 - From the Vault | Dean Piper on the 'murky' world of celebrity journalism.
This episode was originally published in February 2023.
Dean Piper! I can't lie, I enjoyed this conversation with Dean immensely and actually found it to be an incredibly cathartic experience too.
Dean and I were both 'celebrity journalists' at a time when celebrity journalism was called-in to editors via brick phones and gathered on the dancefloor at nightclubs or in the loos at award ceremonies. It was the era of celebrity weddings, showbiz couples with portmanteau nicknames and when daily sales of newspapers and magazines running showbiz gossip ran into the millions.
However, while it was fun for a while, about ten years ago Dean turned his back on 'that life'. In fact, he didn't just turn on his heel, he walked out with no job to go to, no plan and no idea what the future would hold.
This conversation details why Dean has never looked back, why he felt it was time to leave and how disappointed he is that in the ten years since he left, celebrity journalism has become so murky and destructive. We discuss some of his biggest regrets while working on tabloids, how he got some of his juiciest scoops back in the day and what happens, and who stops calling when you walk away from the most powerful job in showbiz.
If you enjoy Dean's insights here then you'll love his Substack where he's writing a weekly column about his life in showbiz.

Thu, 21 Mar 2024 - 12min - 1400 - Natalie Anderson | Small wins, big results!
Talk about a great natter with a fantastic friend. Natalie Anderson is what you might describe as 'good energy', incredible company, good chat and always keen to pass on the latest snippet of advice to make someone else's life easier. That's one of the reasons she started The Capsule, a place where you canfind all of Natalie’s recommendations for a healthy, happy lifestyle - essentially taking the guesswork and legwork out of finding the things you need and the things you love.
What she started talking about was her own experience with anxiety, something she kept private but started sharing solutions to on The Capsule before opening up about her own experiences and creating a community of women who felt the same and were as keen to find solutions and balms as she was.
What started as a blog, following her time as a columnist at Hello magazine, has turned into a huge enterprise and I’m delighted to learn what more’s to come from Natalie and The Capsule and find out what’s working for her in 2024!

Thu, 14 Mar 2024 - 1h 11min - 1398 - Trinny Woodall | Ending friendships, falling in love and becoming a CEO.
Trinny's back and how things have changed since she last visited the podcast. Trinny London, her makeup and skincare brand, was a start-up and now it's a huge, global success. Dare I say, it's a big of a juggernaut now, which means the last few years have involved some steep learning curves for Trinny who has had to step up to the role of CEO. I find Trinny in a reflective mood on this occasion as we discuss ending toxic friendships, being open to love and the lessons one learns from navigating through the crappy stuff.

Mon, 11 Mar 2024 - 1h 17min - 1397 - From the vault: Dr Ramani Durvasula | How to Spot a Narcissist
Dr Ramani's recent visit to the podcast was so popular that I'm re-publishing her visit to the show from 2021.
‘Pushing back on narcissism is a human rights issue’.
Dr Ramani Durvasula is a clinical psychologist, best-selling author and professor of psychology who shares her expertise on narcissism and narcissistic personality disorder on the latest episode of the podcast.
The term ‘narcissist’ is bandied around a lot but it’s an overused and misunderstood word, which is why I asked Dr Ramani to join me on the show. During our conversation she helps unpick and unpack its complexities, what it is, what it isn’t and how to navigate the world knowing that being a victim of narcissism can cause you real harm.
If you think you understand what a narcissist is and how to spot one then think again…
In this episode, @drramani shares:
•The difference between narcissism and narcissistic personality disorder.
•Why the label ‘narcissist’ is too broad.
•Whether narcissism is innate or learned.
•The emotional damage a narcissist can cause and why the fallout can be so devastating for the victim.
•The types of people who are most likely to get caught in a narcissist’s trap.
•Why narcissism is rewarded in today’s society and why it’s turning narcissism into an epidemic.
•Whether a narcissist ever gets their just deserts.
•Whether you should ever tell a narcissistic off, and much more…
Dr Ramani’s books are available now at all good bookstores:
Don’t You Know Who I Am? How to stay sane in an era of narcissism, entitlement and incivility.
Should I Stay or Should I Go? Surviving a Relationship with a Narcissist.

Heartbreak is no fun and while it might be a rite of passage and something everyone will go through, the emotional, mental and physical pain can be unbearable and feel never-ending. While the breakdown of a relationship can be horrendous, the end of a friendship can be devastating too and Shelley J Whitehead has a guide to overcoming this kind of heartbreak, which she shares in this episode.
There are stages of heartbreak, all of which are important, and as awful as they may feel as the time, they are evidence of moving through and eventually beyond the heartbreak...

Thu, 22 Feb 2024 - 15min - 1392 - Dr Ramani Durvasula | How to Survive a Narcissist.
What is the impact of narcissistic abuse? And can you ever recover? Dr Ramani Durvasual is arguably the world's leading expert on narcissism and her books and YouTube channel are testament to her breadth of knowledge on the topic. However, while defining, describing and identifying narcissism has become a widespread pastime, how actually to recover from the effects of narcissistic abuse is much less talked about - until now.
Dr Ramani's latest book It's Not You: How to Identify and Heal from Narcissistic People delves into how to put yourself back together, how to be wise to and avoid gaslighting and how to navigate the world without being sucked into narcissist's gravitational pull.
On her first visit to the podcast, Dr Ramani helped me realised my role as an enabler and in this conversation we discuss how to build the emotional toolkit required to navigate a world with difficult people.

Thu, 01 Feb 2024 - 12min - 1386 - Stacey Duguid | Breakdowns, Living in the Present and Being Seen.
Stacey Duguid has my heart after this conversation. We have many mutual friends but this was our first proper chat and, as you'll hear, it's exactly that - a searingly honest get-to-you-know-you conversation that just so happened to be committed to audio. I love an open guest who isn't afraid to tell it how it is and that's exactly what Stacey is.
From navigating infidelity, divorce, unhappy relationships, mental and emotional breakdowns, going back to bed, losing friends on the way, the discomfort of mid-life and what it really means to be neurodivergent in the world... This is a wide-ranging conversation and I sincerely hope you love it!

Mon, 29 Jan 2024 - 1h 17min - 1385 - Bullet Points | Shall we do a 'no buy' together?
Don't hang up! You don't have to but what if she just spent a little time looking at our spending habits and how we could spend our money a little more wisely? I say this as someone who loves the dopamine high of a next day delivery or splurge when I'm out at the shops but who is realising more and more, how unnecessary it all is...

Thu, 25 Jan 2024 - 17min - 1384 - Kierra Campbell | Not taking 'No' for an Answer, Surviving a Challenging Childhood and Being a good mum.
Kierra Campbell blew me away with her honesty in this episode. She really is what dream guests are made of; honest, willing to go to uncomfortable, sometimes difficult places, but always keen to make sure listeners have a great time and hopefully come away with something useful for their time spent with us.
Kierra is one half of interior design duo Poodle & Blonde and we meet her when she's poised to make some serious changes in her life and though it's a lot of change at once, she's seeing it as a sign that she's ready for growth and new adventures. It's a refreshing and reassuring attitude and one I intend to emulate next time I feel overwhelmed.
During our time together Kierra shared her life lessons learned from a difficult, unstable childhood, navigating the business world as an young, black female entrepreneur and how her business and business partner taught her how to trust...

Mon, 22 Jan 2024 - 1h 09min - 1383 - Bullet Points | I'm fatphobic?
Talking about weight loss and body image is controversial in a way that for me, as someone who grew up in the 80s and 90s, is hard to comprehend. But as someone who has battled their weight for most of their life and now finds themselves having overcome that struggle, I wanted to talk about it. Apparently, that makes me fatphobic. Have a listen to the episode and see what you think...

Thu, 18 Jan 2024 - 14min - 1382 - Joanna Jensen | The Integrity of Business
I had so much fun chatting with Joanna Jensen. Not only is she the founder of one of the most successful brands of recent years, Child's Farm, she's also an open book and, as you can hear in this conversation, will to talk about anything. Whether it's the ethics behind a sustainable brand, generational shifts in work ethic or how to consume mindfully, she has a well-formed opinion on everything.

Thu, 11 Jan 2024 - 15min - 1380 - Laura Adlington | Yo-Yo Dieting, Fatphobia and Body Acceptance.
Conversations about weight, size and shape have never been more loaded or volatile, which is why I am so pleased to have had Laura Adlington on the podcast. This felt like a really important conversation about the complex issues about weight, body shape, size and everything that goes hand-in-hand with complex and toxic relationships with and around food. Whether it's addiction, eating disorder or mental illness, it's something that can be all-consuming and life-limiting.
Laura has interrogated her relationship with her own body and food issues in her book Diet Starts Monday, but also takes a closer look at the ways in which diet culture and anti-fat bias seep into our consciousness and make us feel less than.

It's 1st January, which means you're probably being bombarded with lots of 'new year, new you' messaging and potentially feeling as though there's something about yourself you need to change or improve upon. Well, I reject this idea. Instead of searching for flaws, let's celebrate all the things we know to be true having lived our lives and made mistakes.

Thu, 21 Dec 2023 - 10min - 1374 - Joe Nucci | Are you defined by your trauma?
Joe Nucci has gone viral for his straight-talking posts about mental health and trauma. While it's no bad thing that we've become more comfortable talking about mental health and that struggling with mental health issues is now far less taboo than it was a decade ago, there are elements of the conversation that are unhelpful. Being defined by your mental health doesn't afford you the ability to make changes, progress and move beyond a diagnosis and it's this which Joe is challenging.
When I saw his posts, I knew he had to be welcomed onto the show to expand on his position and explain how he positively sees the conversation changing and moving forward.

Thu, 14 Dec 2023 - 10min - 1372 - Dr Nicole LePera | Are you getting the love you deserve?
Dr Nicole LePera makes a welcome return to the podcast following her first visit in 2021 where we discussed, among other things, self-sabotage, how easy it is to 'coast' through life, the empath/narcissist dynamic and how to set boundaries. This time around Nicole shares her insights on building strong bonds with other people by first getting to know yourself.
I love chatting with Nicole; she is always generous with her insights and expertise. Her new book How to Be the Love You Seek really is a valuable guide for anyone who hasn't felt the love they want or need.

Mon, 11 Dec 2023 - 1h 12min - 1371 - Bullet Points | Why I'm taking a Social Media break.
Social media is great, right? We get those little dopamine hits from refreshing our feeds, get to peek into other people's lives and can find a way to be entertained 24/7. But what if you're using it too much? What if you're hooked?!
In this episode, I share my findings from my first week or a month-long social media break. Am I in a clammy heap on the floor thinking about Instagram or am I far more present and engaged in my daily life?

Thu, 07 Dec 2023 - 16min - 1370 - Solo Episode | Ask Me Anything: Eating Disorders, Lifestyle Changes and Inspirational People.
There were so many questions sent in for November's Ask Me Anything that I decided to answer them in this month's solo episode. Thanks to everyone who took the time to write in!
Questions answered in this episode:
What’s your best beauty product of 2023?What’s the most embarrassing beauty treatment you’ve ever had? What is something you’re doing in 2023 that you weren’t doing in 2022?Best way to get back on the wagon?Would you recommend tweakments? What are your thoughts and advice on fillers and botox? Should I continue?Biggest current challenge or goal and how you’re navigating to overcome or achieve it?In your adult life, what experience, book, and person has had the greatest impact?Complete Taylor Swift virgin, where should I begin?I know you love Skims but do you ever feel uncomfortable supporting such a grotesquely rich family?I want to read Brain over Binge because I know I have issues with food and a lot of what you’ve said about food taking up a lot of mental brain space really resonates, but I’m terrified it won’t have the same effect on me.I want 2024 to be the year I stop being lazy, start going to the gym and eat well. Any tips?I’m thinking of getting some dumbbells so I can work out at home, any suggestions for what weight I should start with? Are you still getting up early?I really respect your journey with coming to terms with food issues etc but I am disappointed you advocate for calories. It makes me think you’ve ultimately bought into diet culture so it’s less of a recovery and just another type of disorder. To join the Facebook group for the podcast click here >> The Emma Guns Show Forum.

Mon, 04 Dec 2023 - 58min - 1369 - Bullet Points | Are you dreading the excesses of the festive season?
I've had a flurry of messages from people recently asking how to navigate food and drink during the Christmas Party Season. I'm not an expert but I know what it's like to feel completely out of control around food, especially when it's in plentiful supply so I hope this episode is helpful for anyone who struggles in the same way.

Thu, 30 Nov 2023 - 14min - 1368 - Kathryn Hansen | Binge Eating, Eating Disorder Recovery and what it means to 'eat well'.
Kathryn Hansen changed my life. I don't say that lightly, but her book Brain over Binge helped me confront, come to terms with and ultimately start recovery from an eating disorder I didn't even realise I had.
You see, binge eating disorders tend to go undiagnosed and actually impact more people combined than the better-known anorexia nervosa and anorexia bulimia. It can be easily dismissed as gluttony, laziness, greed and a whole host of other negative labels that nobody really wants to wear. Still, it is a recognised emotional/mental illness that can be supported with treatments, including counselling.
I had lived in shame for years since I was a child and my weight tipped over into the obese category at the doctors, so I began a relationship with food that was secret, feast or famine and co-dependent and which led my body to look and feel a way I didn't want it to.
In this episode, four years after reading Kathryn's book and being able to install lifestyle changes that have changed my relationship with food forever, we discuss the muddy topic of what it's like to feel dependent on and powerless around food.

Mon, 27 Nov 2023 - 1h 06min - 1367 - Bullet Points | The Perfect Antidote to Black Friday
At the time of publication, we are fully into Cyber Week and every advert on social media, television and billboard is screaming about the amazing deal you could get for this week only. It's all a bit grotesque in light of the cost of living crisis so I thought I'd bring some balance to your podcast feed with a list of amazing charities you can donate to and support this Christmas.

Thu, 23 Nov 2023 - 16min - 1366 - Michael Douglas | Apologies, Forgiveness and Learning to Speak your Truth
I'm just going to say it, I'm a fully signed-up Michael Douglas super fan after this conversation. He's a hairdresser and entrepreneur with over 35 years in the beauty industry, and how Michael and I have never 'properly' met despite our years in the same space is beyond me but thank goodness we put that right by 'meeting' for this conversation.
It's not an exaggeration to say that a lot of what Michael said really stayed with me after we spoke; his thoughts on karma, forgiveness and apologising gave me pause for thought and were really helpful in helping me get clarity on some of my own 'life stuff'.
We covered a lot of ground in this chat and perhaps what I loved the most was that he was happy to answer anything, to explore any subject in a way that was unguarded and very real.

Thu, 16 Nov 2023 - 17min - 1364 - Lindsey Kelk | Relocating to LA, writing best-sellers and STUFF.
Die Hard IS a Christmas movie and this, my dear listeners, is why Lindsey Kelk and I are friends. Well, this and also a joyous mutual appreciation for Taylor Alison Swift, anything a little bit supernatural and also bralettes.
Lindsey returns to the podcast as her book The Christmas Wish is published in paperback but it's exciting times for Lindsey who has several major products in production as well as new books expected next year.
Her return to the podcast is, as you'd expect from two people who regularly communicate by WhatsApp about pretty much everything, to hear about the books she's written since she last visited, her feelings about Arnold Schwarzenegger as Governor of California, her latest and greatest beauty finds (this is mainly a love-in about the CurrentBody LED Face Mask) and much more.

- 1360 - Claire Coleman | Hard truths and ageing 'gracefully'.
In this episode is Claire Coleman one of the most trusted, familiar and respected names in beauty journalism. She is known for being thorough, relying heavily on evidence and science to debunk myths or bring clarity to the latest attention-grabbing headlines. In fact, she is so detail-oriented that I’ve been calling her The Forensic Beauty Journalist for years.
Claire is also a returning guest to the podcast and my friend. She is someone to whom I regularly go for advice and to find out what she thinks about certain topics because she is so thoughtful and considered. Claire doesn’t tend to put pen to paper or indeed open her mouth unless she has thought through what she is going to say.
It’s why I thought a ride through her life lessons would make for an interesting conversation and also because I’ll take any opportunity to quiz her about pretty much anything because her perspective is always helpful.

My guest in this episode is Holly Tucker, one of the most trusted, inspiring and familiar names in UK business. She co-founded the ecommerce behemoth notonthehighstreet.com, is UK Ambassador to Small Creative Businesses and has generated £1billion for the economy. She is a force to be reckoned with.
Holly is a highly respected entrepreneur not least because she has dedicated her career and platforms to championing small businesses. She received an MBE for services to small businesses and enterprise in June 2013 as part of Her Majesty the Queen’s Birthday Honours List.
Rather than business as a stuffy space with spreadsheets here and flow charts there, Holly’s brand of entrepreneurship is all about creativity.
She has topped the Amazon and Sunday Times Business Bestseller charts with her books that have helped hundreds of thousands of business owners find the skills and mindset to steer their businesses to success.
Holly founded the immersive brand Holly & Co to help small businesses through the highs and lows of their business journeys and is striving to redefine what it means to be ‘a small business’. She also encourages more women and young people to start their own businesses.

Wed, 11 Oct 2023 - 11min - 1354 - Emily English | Eating disorders, life-changing therapy and finding peace.
My guest today is Emily English, the nutritionist and brand founder, who quite honestly changed my entire diet when I met her and started following her Instagram recipes. I have never eaten such delicious, colourful and nutritious food - all of which is an absolute delight to make.
Her work extends beyond her clinic with clients, she is also a wellness entrepreneur with future projects we should all keep our eyes and ears open for.
To assume that Emily’s life is picture perfect, although even though she admits her Instagram does look pretty perfect, life hasn’t always been smooth. She’s taken risks, made mistakes, learned the hard way and come up against some pretty challenging obstacles - and it’s the lessons learned from these that Emily is going to share with us today on this episode of The Emma Guns Show.

Wed, 27 Sep 2023 - 16min - 1350 - Laura Mathias | Alopecia, Self-Acceptance and Not Caring What Other People Think.
My guest is Laura Mathias, the communications manager, campaigner and alopecia awareness advocate. Laura started losing her hair in her early teens and she admits that, as a result, she stopped leaving the house. As she describes it, ‘I completely withdrew and just gave up.’
On Instagram where she’s @relightalopecia, Laura has shared her journey with alopecia because that diagnosis in her early teens led to issues with self-esteem and self-expression. A wig-wearer for years, lockdown changed that when we were all working from home and had the option to turn our cameras off and this was a huge learning experience for her and it’s these learnings she shares in this episode.

What I'd like to know from you is, do you think the latest news re: Russell Brand has exposed a dark side to self-help and self-appointed/follower-elevated gurus?

Wed, 20 Sep 2023 - 24min - 1348 - Natassia Nicolao | Entrepreneurship, Moving on After Bad Mentors and Saving the World.
In this episode I'm joined by Natassia Nicolao, or Tass she is known to her friends. She is one of the most exciting and forward-facing beauty entrepreneurs at the helm of a brand today. The brand is Conserving Beauty and it has already gone viral in Australia where the patented technology allowed them to create the world’s first fully dissolvable and compostable cleansing mask and wipe.
If you’re jaded by all the greenwashing and tokenistic efforts brands say they are making then Conserving Beauty might be the brand you need to hear about. It’s the only beauty brand to be backed by Impact Funds and is lead by an all-female board including Elle MacPherson.

Sun, 17 Sep 2023 - 1h 07min - 1347 - Bullet Points | Why are we making girls stupid?
I detest these trends where 'girl' precedes a video where logic goes out of the window and the fact 'girl' is involved means it's going to be stupid. Am I missing something?

Wed, 13 Sep 2023 - 16min - 1346 - Jodie Cariss | Are you taking care of your mental health?
Jodie Cariss is a psychotherapist and author and the founder of The Self Space, the world’s first on-demand mental health service on the high street offering in-person and virtual appointments.
It’s probably fair to say that she didn’t set out, necessarily to disrupt the way people access and have therapy but that’s what she has done with The Self Space and it’s a model that’s been embraced worldwide. She believes her job is to facilitate and highlight a path toward fulfilling one’s full potential, both individually and collectively.
I’m always excited to hear my guests’ life lessons and I’m delighted for you to hear Jodie's.

Sun, 03 Sep 2023 - 55min - 1343 - Bullet Points | Why are Conspiracy Theories so Believable?
Please tell me I'm not alone in noticing that conspiracy theories are beginning to be taken more seriously than fact. Is it because they are more exciting and tantalising or because the truth is just a bit boring?

Wed, 23 Aug 2023 - 30min - 1340 - Alex Crockford | How to go after what you really want (even if it scares you!)
Alex Crockford, the fitness coach, model, actor, athlete and founder of CrockFit who has amassed nearly half a million followers on Instagram and over a quarter of million subscribers on Youtube because of his easy-to-follow, results-driven fitness content.
Alex is often held up as the example of what fitness looks like, and while there’s no denying the peak physical condition he’s in, he’s a huge advocate of deconstructing what it takes and making fitness and health goals accessible for anyone, whatever their starting point may be.
For a lot of us, pursuing health goals is something for which there’s a lot of friction; time, energy, money, time, willpower and time again… And perhaps what Alex is so good at, is showing how to make that journey as smooth as possible. In our conversation, he’s going to share his biggest risks, the obstacles he’s had to overcome as well as the excuses he makes for himself, even though he tries his best not to…

Rupal Patel is a former CIA officer turned serial entrepreneur who, in her role as an analyst and field agent for the CIA, served in active war zones, advised four-star generals, and was recognised by the CIA Director for her ‘superior support to the President of the United States’.
As you know, I love to see the world through my guests’ eyes and to learn from their experiences, which differ so much from my own. I cannot imagine how the world seems or the lessons learned given Rupal’s incredible career and experience, which is why I’m so delighted she’s joining me to share them on this episode of the podcast…

Wed, 09 Aug 2023 - 16min - 1336 - Anita Bhagwandas | How to not feel like an outsider and be an agent for the change you want to see in the world.
Author and journalist Anita Bhagwandas has occupied some of the most senior beauty journalism roles in magazines and newspapers over her nearly twenty-year career. She entered the beauty industry feeling like an outsider, determined to take the white-centric, thinner-is-better ideal perpetuated in media and open it up into something much more inclusive.
Because it sucks to be an outsider. And it sucks even harder to be an outsider for things that you simply cannot do anything about, such as your skin colour.
Though Anita entered the world of beauty journalism in order to be an agent for change, she perhaps underestimated the impact the fashion and beauty world would have on her, a girl from Wales who had never felt as though she fit in or looked the right way. In many ways, she was throwing herself headlong into a world ripe to reject, dismiss and other her and, as I’m sure we’ll discuss, that was a part of her career journey she perhaps hadn’t anticipated.
Her book Ugly deep dives into why we find what we find beautiful, beautiful but perhaps, more than that, it uncovers why we assign ugly to so much, including, more often than not ourselves.

Wed, 26 Jul 2023 - 12min - 1332 - Ruby Warrington | Do you want children? And other triggering questions...
Ruby Warrington is an author, journalist and publishing consultant and as she shares her life lessons with us in this episode, we linger on the topic of her new book Women Without Kids. Ruby and I are of a similar age and neither of us have, or want, children and that's something which still, in some circles, makes us a bit weird. It shouldn't though and hopefully being open and honest on this topic is the way we remove the taboo.
Ruby's book Women Without Kids is available now.

Wed, 19 Jul 2023 - 18min - 1330 - Dr Philippa Kaye | Surviving cancer, what NOT to say to someone with a cancer diagnosis and the need to be liked.
Dr Philippa Kaye is a familiar face on British television thanks to her thorough clinics on daytime TV offering health advice. She has also gone 'viral' online for making sometimes taboo health subjects accessible and easily understood. In this episode, Philippa shares her life lessons with me and how being diagnosed with cancer, and having to have major surgeries during the very first lockdown, impacted her physical, mental and emotional health.
Her account of being alone in intensive care is heartbreaking but the lessons she's learned, the resolve she's found and how she communicated her situation to her three young children is truly inspiring.
I challenge you not to cry during this conversation, such is Philippa's honesty on a sometimes difficult-to-navigate topic.

Wed, 12 Jul 2023 - 16min - 1328 - Solo Show | How I Lost the Last 10lbs.
How have I lost weight? This is something that people have been messaging me about for months and it felt like the right time, and the right place, to share a little more detail. I know some of you have noticed my weight loss on Instagram and I wanted to share the method I used. I also want to stress that I was already delighted with my progress. The underlying issue with all of this was my issues with food and the fact that I am recovering from something resembling a binge eating disorder. I am not a nutritionist and this podcast shouldn't be taken as me telling you what to do, it is merely my account of what I have done and what has worked for me.
I am always happy to discuss in DMs or by email - or my favourite place is the Facebook group - if you want to ask me anything more specific.

Wed, 28 Jun 2023 - 13min - 1324 - Mandy Hickson | Controlling the controllable, calculated risks and getting out of your comfort zone.
Mandy Hickson is a fast-jet pilot who came face-to-face with Tom Cruise and, lost for words, told him, 'it's unlikely you'd be able to run after ejecting'. He agreed and she should know because Mandy is a former RAF fast-jet pilot who has completed three tours of duty and 45 combat missions.

Strap in, do a salute to the tower and get ready for take-off because this is an episode and conversation packed with incredible and unique insights, stories from the skies - including a harrowing account of being airborne during 9/11 - and why the key to so many things is 'controlling the controllables'.

Wed, 21 Jun 2023 - 10min - 1322 - Taylor James | The Power of saying 'No' and the life-changing benefits of self belief.
Taylor James is the host of award-winning podcast Waffle Shop and in this conversation we get extremely deep. What we both have in common is an inability to hold back when it comes to discussing our own mental health so buckle up as we navigate the depths of depression, clawing your way back to becoming a person you like, trying to not be such a sensitive soul and much more.
Taylor also opens up about his sexuality and the things in life that have held him back, even if they only existed in his own head. He also shares how life changed in an instant when a routine operation changed his mother's life forever meaning that he had to make life or death decisions.
It's deep, it's emotional and we hope it's helpful.

Wed, 14 Jun 2023 - 12min - 1320 - Davinia Taylor | Hormone hacking, getting out of your own way and putting yourself first.
If you Google 'Davinia Taylor' you'll likely find one of two things at the top of your search results: images from the early Noughties of Davinia swigging out of a bottle of Dom Perignon or a more recent one of her looking overweight, swollen and uncomfortable. She was the ultimate IT girl but years of excess had left her feeling terrible.
Determined not to feel sluggish, foggy and slow one single day more, Davinia committed to turning her life around one tiny change at a time. What started with a cold shower to boost her dopamine levels started a deep-dive investigation into the other free hacks she could use to shake off a feeling she hated and instead feel energise, vital and motivated. It's been a journey and it's one she shares here.
What's worked for Davinia might not work for you but what is absolutely undeniable is how committing to making positive changes, one at time, might be boring and the opposite of a 'quick fix' but boy, does it work!
I'm thrilled to have Davinia back on the show because her unrelenting energy and enthusiasm to be better and feel better is infectious.

Thu, 08 Jun 2023 - 15min - 1318 - Alex Light | Reinventing herself, navigating the world as a sensitive soul and unlearning toxic diet culture.
She's back! Alex Light returns to the podcast and she is, as it to be expected, an absolute joy to talk to and a very special guest indeed.
Now, full disclosure, Alex and I are friends and we are similar in a lot of ways, not least the fact that we can get pretty deep, pretty quickly once we start chatting and that's what happened in this episode.
We talk about Alex's biggest risk, of course, which was to pivot from a content creator who focussed on fashion and beauty into someone who spoke openly about her own experience with an eating disorder and body image issues to now being one of social media's most-followed accounts for sensible non-toxic messaging around food and our bodies.
We spend a lot of time pondering whether it's any coincidence that two people who are both sensitive souls have had trouble with their sense of identity that has spilled over into how they feel about how they look and how they care for themselves.
I loved this conversation with Alex because I truly feel we would have had exactly the same conversation over lunch. It's real, it's raw and it's honest.
I hope you enjoy this episode. And if you do, please do give The Emma Guns Show a sweet little five-star rating where it is you get your podcasts.
