Elsewhere, there’s our usual discussion about two-week Masters 1000 events, plus how wildcards are awarded, the new men’s doubles format being trialled, changes to the Billie Jean King Cup Finals, Alize Cornet’s upcoming retirement, and an upsetting question put to Garbine Muguruza.

Thu, 04 Apr 2024 - 23min - 1221 - Miami - Collins crowns final season; Sinner cements his status at the top
Our post-Miami live show was mostly devoted to the two champions, Danielle Collins and Jannik Sinner. With the help of listener Vicki Spreadbury, Catherine distills why it means a lot to see a woman like Collins succeed, Matt explains why she's now a certified member of The Backhand List, and David wonders how much more she could achieve before she retires at the end of the year. As for Sinner, there's chat about the Novak Djokovic-ification of his game and his dominance over Daniil Medvedev and Grigor Dimitrov on finals weekend. There's also a preview of the clay court swing as tournaments in Charleston and Estoril get underway. Which players are we excited to see on the clay? And who's in need of some good results?

Catherine, David and Matt convene to discuss a busy few days in Miami.
The women’s final is set between Elena Rybakina and Danielle Collins and there’s chat about Rybakina’s resilient run so far, Collins’ more destructive path through, and what might happen in the final. How much has her decision to retire at the end of the season helped Collins on court? Should she be on The Backhand List? And why does Rybakina keep playing epics?
On the men’s side, the big headline has been Grigor Dimitrov’s incredible performance to beat Carlos Alcaraz. How did he do it? Has he ever played better? Can he keep it going against Alexander Zverev in the semis? And why does it take Alcaraz so long to adjust tactically to his opponent? There’s also a preview of Daniil Medvedev vs Jannik Sinner. Thu, 25 Jan 2024 - 1h 01min - 1206 - AO Day 11 - Alcaraz ousted; Qinwen Zheng surges to semis
Shortly after watching Carlos Alcaraz lose to Alexander Zverev from courtside, Catherine, David and Matt convene at TP Towers to discuss what on earth happened. There's chat about Zverev's incredible serving, the way Alcaraz was off his game, and what might have caused such a below par performance. Zverev's semi-final with Daniil Medvedev is previewed, Dayana Yastremska's run to the semis as a qualifier is analysed, and there's lots of admiration for the way Zheng Qinwen has handled the pressure this tournament.

Wed, 24 Jan 2024 - 1h 05min - 1205 - AO Day 10 - Dream semis set
On another crazy day at Melbourne Park, Catherine, David and Matt bring you a two-part podcast to discuss how Coco Gauff vs Aryna Sabalenka and Novak Djokovic vs Jannik Sinner were set up. There’s chat about how we felt watching Gauff’s error-ridden performance, the way in which Djokovic’s managed the conditions, Sabalenka’s continued dominance, Sinner’s surge to condemn Andrey Rublev to a 10th straight slam QF defeat, and how the organisers were saved from a ridiculously late finish, even if 1:21am is still far too late.

Tue, 23 Jan 2024 - 1h 01min - 1204 - AO Day 9 - More mayhem
The quarter-final line-ups are set and the two draws could scarcely be more different. In the women's draw, the top half became an even bigger land of opportunity as Victoria Azarenka was beaten by Dayana Yastremska, and Elina Svitolina had to retire against Linda Noskova.
On the pod, David reveals his best Noskova anecdote, and we also discuss how Zheng Qinwen might handle the pressure of being the favourite to reach the final. Meanwhile in the men's draw, Carlos Alcaraz dazzled on court but couldn't name a woman, Alexander Zverev won his second fifth set tiebreak of the event against the new and improved Cameron Norrie, and Daniil Medvedev put on a return of serve masterclass in a fantastic on court interview with Jim Courier.

Mon, 22 Jan 2024 - 55min - 1203 - AO Day 8 - Aussie agony; Awesome Aryna
After a number of big upsets in the past few days, Sunday at the Australian Open saw the top seeds mostly deliver statement performances. Catherine, David and Matt chat about Andrey Rublev's impressive surge to beat Alex de Minaur, triple bagel watch briefly being on as Novak Djokovic dismissed Adrian Mannarino, the current state of Stefanos Tsitsipas' career after he lost to Taylor Fritz, and how Jannik Sinner emphatically beat Karen Khachanov. In the women's draw, Aryna Sabalenka and Coco Gauff look to be on a collision course, but can Barbora Krejcikova or Marta Kostyuk cause a surprise?

A quiet day turned into one of the most significant of the tournament as Iga Swiatek was beaten by Linda Noskova, throwing the top half of the women’s draw wide open. Sat, 20 Jan 2024 - 1h 07min - 1201 - AO Day 6 - Tequila and dreams
After the mayhem of Day 5, the Australian Open chilled out a bit on Friday with lots of one-sided matches to start the day, but it came alive as Mirra Andreeva and Adrian Mannarino mounted incredible comebacks. Those two players were - perhaps unexpectedly - the focus of the pod as Catherine, David and Matt recorded back at TP Towers in Melbourne. We also talk Taylor Fritz and Stefanos Tsitsipas, excitement for Aryna Sabalenka vs Amanda Anisimova, Jannik Sinner's impressive first week, Coco Gauff's class, and Novak Djokovic clicking into gear.

The Australian Open delivered one of the most extraordinary Grand Slam days on Thursday as Elena Rybakina was beaten 22-20 in a deciding set tiebreak by Anna Blinkova, Jessica Pegula lost to Clara Burel, Iga Swiatek somehow survived against Danielle Collins, Holger Rune was upset by Arthur Cazaux, and Daniil Medvedev was left playing on the Rod Laver at gone 3am. Mon, 15 Jan 2024 - 1h 02min - 1196 - AO Day 1 - Djokovic pushed like never before; The Backhand is back
On the first ever Sunday start at the Australian Open, Novak Djokovic was pushed to four hours by 18-year-old Dino Prizmic. On the pod, Catherine, David and Matt discuss what made Prizmic's performance so impressive, why Djokovic was full of praise for him, and what effect this might have on Djokovic for the rest of the tournament.
The length of that match meant that Aryna Sabalenka didn't step onto court until 11:33pm to a largely empty stadium, meaning the special moment of her return as defending champion was spoiled. She delivered a statement performance though.
Elsewhere there's chat about Taylor Fritz and Andrey Rublev surviving five set scares, the return of Amanda Anisimova, mixed success for Australian sensations, Jannik Sinner's rusty first match of the year, Maria Sakkari's new racquet, and much more.

There’s chat about what the restructuring at the WTA might mean as Steve Simon relinquishes his role as chief executive to become executive chairman, Simona Halep distancing herself from Patrick Mouratoglou ahead of her appeal date in February, victory for Jack Draper at the Ultimate Tennis Showdown in London, David vs Nick Kyrgios on Twitter/X, news that Juan Carlos Ferrero won’t be travelling to Australia with Carlos Alcaraz as he recovers from knee surgery, and lots of excitement for the start of the new season.

Mon, 11 Dec 2023 - 1h 41min - 1189 - Next Gen, Politics and 2024
The tennis off season is officially here! In part one of the pod, Catherine, David and Matt wrap up the ATP Next Gen Finals where we learned a lot about Hamad Medjedovic. There’s also the annual rant about the scoring system, excitement for the return of Rafael Nadal in Brisbane, and news that Zheng Qinwen is going to be coached by Pere Riba again. Plus, we’re very excited to reveal our own big plans for 2024!
In part two, we speak to Matt Futterman of The Athletic about his story that the Grand Slams are plotting a deal for a ‘premier tour’ that would revolutionise the sport. Matt goes into detail about how it might work and what it would mean for different parties, the roles of Saudi Arabia and the PTPA in all this, and how likely it is to actually happen.

Czechia were just a game away from a Davis Cup semi final... enter Alex De Minaur and the sort of comeback that he describes as 'part of his identity'. Mon, 20 Nov 2023 - 55min - 1181 - ATP Finals - Djokovic dunks on Sinner & Alcaraz for record 7th title
Novak Djokovic did it again, and routined both Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz along the way. It brought a close to both the ATP Finals, and Amazon Prime Video's coverage of the sport in the UK, so Catherine went straight from the presenter's mic to the podcast mic to talk to David and Matt about the last couple of days. We also cover the doubles final, and hear from Matt about what Malaga is like. Pods will be nightly throughout the Davis Cup Finals.
Ravi's Story- Today's podcast was introduced by 9-year-old Ravi Adelekan, a pod fan who was diagnosed with a brain tumour two years ago. He has raised nearly £90,000 for The Brain Tumour Charity and brainstrust and his dream is that other children will not have to suffer the sort of surgery he endured. There's also coverage of Stefanos Tsitsipas' retirement through injury, Andrey Rublev's continued self-abuse on court, and a chase for year-end No.1 in the doubles.

Sat, 04 Nov 2023 - 46min - 1170 - WTA Finals underway, but the players aren't happy
The WTA Finals in Cancun have begun, but the build up to the event was marred by strong player criticism about the venue, with limited practice time and a Centre Court which was only just ready for action. Catherine and Matt are joined by special guest Pam Shriver to discuss how and why this happened, the current state of the WTA, and the possible future of this event.
On the court, Karolina Muchova's withdrawal was felt as replacement Maria Sakkari was thrashed by Aryna Sabalenka, and Jessica Pegula beat Elena Rybakina in straight sets. There's analysis of those matches, predictions for the week ahead, and investigations into why Iga Swiatek was the only player wearing red for the official photo.
Elsewhere, there's praise for Zhuhai champion Beatriz Haddad Maia and finalist Zheng Qinwen, lots of admiration for Jannik Sinner's form after his title in Vienna, and joy at seeing Felix Auger-Aliassime get out of his slump. We also cover Jenson Brooksby's suspension, a big step for Wimbledon in their development plans, and the use of data analytics in tennis.

Mon, 16 Oct 2023 - 1h 05min - 1167 - Iga is back, Melbourne is longer, and Shanghai is still going
Catherine, David and Matt are back to talk about Iga Swiatek’s title run in Beijing where she cut out the unforced errors, re-established her dominance over Coco Gauff, and looked free and unburdened on court. On the men’s side, Jannik Sinner went from vomiting in a bin against Grigor Dimitrov to beating Carlos Alcaraz and Daniil Medvedev in back-to-back matches. Just how impressive were both Swiatek and Sinner?
There’s also discussion about the main storylines from Shanghai so far, the Australian Open becoming a 15-day event, the completion of the WTA Finals line-up, and Stefanos Tsitsipas splitting with Mark Philippoussis.

Mon, 09 Oct 2023 - 1h 03min - 1166 - Winning!
Catherine, David and Matt are thoroughly confused by the current tennis scheduling, but there’s chat about a first hard court title for Ons Jabeur, Veronika Kudermetova’s brilliant week in Tokyo, the abuse players receive on social media, poor crowds at many of the matches in China, Alexander Zverev’s good run of form, and Wim Fissette leaving Zheng Qinwen to work with Naomi Osaka again. Plus, if you’ll allow us, a few minutes of smugness to talk about our victory at the British Podcast Awards!

Mon, 25 Sep 2023 - 1h 00min - 1164 - The Simona Halep case and the Davis Cup
The US Open and Grand Slam season may be over for another year, but the tennis news keeps coming, with Simona Halep receiving a four-year ban following breaches of the Tennis Anti-Doping Programme.
Catherine, David and Matt react to the 126-page report published by the International Tennis Integrity Agency.
Elsewhere, there’s chat about a week of Davis Cup action which saw the very best of the what the competition has to offer as Great Britain beat France in a thrilling tie in Manchester, but also threw up big existential questions about the event’s future, with lots of ties played in front of poor crowds and the elimination of Spain meaning that there will be no host nation at the Finals in November.

Fri, 08 Sep 2023 - 1h 03min - 1159 - US Open Day 10 - Semifinals set, and previewed
With all four of Wednesday's quarter-finals finishing in straight sets, it wasn't exactly a classic day, but it has set up a slate of exciting semi-finals.
In part one, Catherine, David and Matt get stuck into Aryna Sabalenka's dominant victory over Zheng Qinwen and her consistency at slams, Daniil Medvedev's defeat of Andrey Rublev in brutal conditions and what the sport is confronting with rising temperatures, and the return of Naomi Osaka to the US Open as she spoke on a panel about mental health in sport.
In the night session, Madison Keys took care of Marketa Vondrousova. Is this her time? And what should we make of Alcaraz's straight-sets win but below par performance against Alexander Zverev?
Looking ahead to the semis, who has a better chance of reaching the final - Medvedev or Ben Shelton? And where might Coco Gauff vs Karolina Muchova be won and lost?

Mon, 04 Sep 2023 - 1h 13min - 1155 - US Open Day 6 - Electric Alcaraz and the darkness of Ons
It was another glorious day in New York which started with Carlos Alcaraz putting on a show, finished with Daniil Medvedev and Pam Shriver gifting us an all-time great on court interview, and featured big wins for the likes of Jessica Pegula, Ons Jabeur and Jannik Sinner. Catherine, David and Matt talk through all of that, as well as Jack Draper's best Grand Slam result, more misplaced belief in Grigor Dimitrov, and another bad day for Cameron Norrie.

But there was still plenty for Catherine, David and Matt to discuss elsewhere, including a perfect day for the Brits, the first use of VAR in tennis which failed spectacularly, Ons Jabeur winning despite being ill, another rough defeat for Caroline Garcia, a comeback victory for Hubert Hurkacz, and a first Grand Slam match win for Arthur Fils.

At the end of it all, Catherine, David and Matt reviewed Novak Djokovic's efficiency, the hurt Andy Murray felt after losing in five sets to Stefanos Tsitsipas, Matteo Berrettini rediscovering his form, a career best moment for Christopher Eubanks, Iga Swiatek and Aryna Sabalenka winning despite not being at their best, the prospect of Ons Jabeur vs Bianca Andreescu on Centre Court tomorrow, the longest tiebreak in women's Grand Slam history, and big wins for Elina Svitolina and Victoria Azarenka.

Wed, 05 Jul 2023 - 1h 06min - 1128 - Live from Wimbledon Day 2 - Rybakina, Roger and rain return
Persistent rain meant that only 8 matches were finished on Tuesday and that Catherine, David and Matt needed to shelter from the rain for the Day 2 pod. There's chat about Roger Federer's return to Wimbledon, a nervy start from Elena Rybakina, lots of great shot-making from Carlos Alcaraz and Ons Jabeur, an efficient win and a new service motion for Andy Murray, Aryna Sabalenka's first match back after the Russia and Belarus ban, and a look ahead to Day 3 with an eye-watering 87 singles matches on the schedule.
