Raul considers the paradox of being an atheist Hindu, but the truth is hard to digest.

Raul has always loved the old stories of Hinduism – the monkey gods, elephant heads, and frolicking milkmaids – but he’s not so sure what they actually mean to him, spiritually speaking. Over the series, Raul has come to see Hinduism in a whole new light. But he still needs to ask himself the biggest question yet. As a kid, when Raul went to the school dinner hall he’d have to wear a big sticker saying NO BEEF. When he was a teenager, he smuggled meatball marinaras into the house under the cover of darkness. Millennia before the West started reassessing the concept of gender, India had the Hijra.

When researching for this podcast, Raul was surprised to discover that, in Hinduism, gender non-conformity is nothing new. The origin of the Hijra can be found in ancient Indian folk stories, but they are also a real community of transwomen that live in India today. Many people still believe that they are mystical beings and that they can confer blessings and curses.

On a day to day basis, Rahat and Faarea are equally stressed out. Faarea has noticed that all these products have popped up to counter this phenomenon, forming what she has christened The Calm Down Industry. She gives Rahat the hard sell on two of her favourites, mindfulness and CBD. We’ve all heard of mindfulness, but could there be something more sinister behind its promises? CBD, meanwhile, is an extract from the cannabis plant that’s said to calm you down and reduce pain and anxiety without getting you high. To try and convince Rahat of its benefits, Faarea takes her to The Feel Good Café, which specialises in CBD products, to chat to Idan Naor and Mark Halford and have a CBD- infused turmeric latte or two.

As a child, Faarea would regularly borrow Fair & Lovely from her cousins, and Rahat's grandma always had a bottle of Tibet Snow. In the UK, many of the ingredients found in these skin-lightening products are toxic and therefore illegal. But the industry is booming! In 2017, it was raking in £3.4 billion and is set to almost double by 2027. Why are these market regulations not working? Why is there still pressure on men and women the world over to be fair? Faarea pops up to Birmingham to chat with Somia R. Bibi, a PhD student doing pioneering research into the skin-lightening industry, and comes back with a bottle or two...
