We're all investors in the stock market, either directly or through our retirement plans. We're handing over management of our assets to financial advisors and fund managers. The best will look after our interests and make us wealthier. But how can we know for sure? Where are the investors' yachts? The big money on Wall Street is made by charging us fees. The finance industry is collecting for managing money, whether they win or lose or break even.
Where do you go if you're completely new but want to start learning about investing in the market yourself. The jargon is dense and it can feel like we're being kept deliberately in the dark with many confusing metrics.
In Stocks for Beginners you'll hear from people in the finance industry and together we'll explain the key concepts of investing while they share their financial knowledge. More importantly, they have insights that allow us to look under the hood of the stock market, explaining how it works and what to look out for.
How is your Roth 401 (k) or 401 (k) investment retirement account linked to the stock market? It's crucial to understand the fundamentals of stock markets. I recommend "The Intelligent Investor" by Benjamin Graham and Warren Buffett's newsletters.
I explore the basics - what a stock is and how to buy one, and delve into the world of value investing, exploring strategies to identify undervalued stocks. I cover the NYSE, FTSE, Dow Jones, S&P500, the Russell, CBOE (Chicago Board Options Exchange), ETFs (Exchange-Traded Funds), Mutual Funds, ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance), and the difference between passive and active investing.
There are many traps for beginner investors and it's good to be aware of the role and risks of options, warrants, CFDs (Contracts for Difference), day trading, bonds, cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin and Ethereum, the difference between fundamental and technical analysis.
Tracking your investments is essential, and it's important to know about watchlists, understand dividends, robo-investing, dollar-cost averaging, fixed income, index funds, and micro-investing.
What is the role of stockbrokers and online brokers and how to buy and sell stocks.
I've interviewed industry experts and collaborated with Gary Brode, Caleb Silver, Spencer Jakab from Wall Street Journal, Erik Smolinski, Investopedia, Stockopedia, Lawrence Carel, Deep Knowledge Investing, 2 bulls in a china shop.
We have to be smart. We have to be diversified and we have to have good risk management strategies if we want to invest for the long term. That's what I'm all about. I'm Phil Muscatello. Join me on Stocks for Beginners. For more information go tohttps://www.stocksforbeginners.net/

- 196 - Gary Brode - Deep Knowledge Investing | A Dearth of Mirth
In this episode I'm joined by friend of the podcast Gary Brode for a rollercoaster ride through the whimsical world of finance, economics and monetary policy.
Let's face it, the economy can be dry and complicated. But Gary manages to inject humour into the discussion while unravelling the intricacies of the Federal Reserve's decisions, Congressional spending habits, and the ever-complex global market influences. There are even some laughs around the potential disaster brewing in Japan's interest rate policy and the commercial real estate market.

Mon, 29 Jan 2024 - 36min - 189 - Preston Yadegar - Shareholder Vote Exchange
Are you maximizing the value of your shareholder voting rights? It's a question many investors overlook, but it could be the key to unlocking additional income from your investments.
Preston Yadegar is the founder and CEO of Shareholder Vote Exchange, the world's first marketplace for shareholder voting rights. Preston has previously worked at several investment advisors and hedge funds in trading and software engineering roles. He graduated from Boston University with a bachelor's degree in computer science and philosophy in 2020.
We discuss proxy votes—what they are, how they work, and why they're often neglected by retail investors. Preston explains that while most shareholders have the right to vote, the majority don't exercise it, leading to what he terms 'rational shareholder apathy.' But should investors simply disregard these votes? Preston argues that there's value in these rights, and that selling them could benefit both the shareholder and the company.

Join us as we dive into a candid conversation with Kyle Hedman, the voice behind the rebranded Band of Traders podcast, formerly known as Two Bulls in a China Shop. In this unscripted episode, we peel back the curtain on the emotional rollercoaster of trading, the importance of risk management, and the psychological battles that traders face.
As the calendar flips to 2024, Kyle shares his journey from exploring stocks to delving into the world of futures. He discusses the value of paper trading, the impact of trading psychology, and the evolution of his own trading process. We also touch on the challenges of maintaining realistic expectations in the trading universe, where the lure of quick riches often overshadows the gritty reality of the markets.
But it's not all charts and trades – our conversation meanders through the streets of Peoria, the festive traditions down under, and even the potential of nuclear power with a nod to Miss America, Grace Stanke. We reflect on the state of the world, the sense of community in trading circles, and the importance of honesty in an industry rife with overpromises.

I hope you’re enjoying your holiday break. The next couple of weeks will be repeats while I recharge for the investing year in 2024. This episode from last year is a great overview on dividend investing. I hope 2024 shines brightly on your portfolio.
Mark LaMonica CFA, is an investor, financial educator and the Director of Product Management, Individual Investor at Morningstar. He still recalls the excitement of receiving his first dividend from Nike as a teen. Mark became interested in income investing during the chaotic dot-com crash emphasizing the importance of looking at a company as a real business, rather than a ticker code. Mark believes in the importance of financial independence and how dividends can be used to generate income without touching principal. We also explore the importance of balancing dividend growth and current yield in an income investing strategy.

THIS IS A REPEAT EPISODE FROM FEBRUARY - ENJOYING A SHORT BREAK AND BACK WITH A BRAND NEW EPISODE NEXT WEEK.
What do exercise, the great outdoors and a healthy lifestyle have to with successful investing? Does the military prepare you for more than just battle? Joining me in this episode is Erik Smolinski from esInvests. Erik is a Marine veteran and self-made millionaire investor. He’s spent over 30,000+ hours honing his craft and outpacing the market for the last 14 years (22.8% CAGR). Erik maintains that there are many well-documented biases in traders and investors. They are covered in the following white paper. One of the things it talks about is how we like to cut winning trades short and we let losing trades run. It's because of ego. We like winning trades, we like being correct. That's why as soon as we have something that's in profit, we want to take it. It's a huge win for the ego.

Sun, 08 Oct 2023 - 44min - 176 - Shawn O'Malley - We Study Markets | Vanity Investing
When too much Shawn is never enough. Here's part 2 of our chat. The highlight for me in this episode is the trap of vanity investing. It's when people talk about their investments as a way of showing how sophisticated they are. It's about bragging rights and commanding authority over the mere mortals who only want to invest in the boring old S&P500. Shawn likens it to the bores who only want to talk about their own importance in the workplace. Those will real influence are likely to not show off.

Thu, 28 Sep 2023 - 25min - 175 - Casey Stubbs - Trading Strategy Guides | Stay the course, execute the plan
Casey Stubbs is best known for helping people to earn income from actively trading the market. But he's also a believer in putting wealth into longer term investments that will grow steadily over the long-term. According to Casey, long-term investing is a game-changer because it allows investments to grow and compound over time. He emphasizes that anyone, regardless of their initial capital, can begin investing. The key is consistency. By adhering to an investment strategy and continuously learning, individuals can steadily increase their wealth. Long-term investing isn't a quick path to riches; rather, it's a reliable approach to achieving financial stability and security.

Sun, 13 Aug 2023 - 33min - 169 - Karl Kaufman - American Dream Investing | Cash without the smoke and mirrors
In this episode Phil and Karl Kaufman discuss the importance of free cash flow as a key metric for investors. Karl explains that free cash flow is the amount of cash left over after a company pays its expenses and capital expenditures. Unlike earnings, which can be manipulated, free cash flow provides a more accurate representation of a company's financial health.
They emphasize that investing in stocks is not gambling, as investors are buying a piece of a real business with a long-term goal of getting a good return on their investment. They highlight companies like Apple and Broadcom, which have impressive free cash flow growth, and discuss the significance of free cash flow margin as a metric to understand how efficiently a company generates cash.
Karl also shares insights on stock buybacks, dividends, and the emotional aspect of investing.

Tue, 04 Jul 2023 - 39min - 165 - Michael Kemp - The Ulysses Contract | Avoiding the rocks of investing under-performance
What does an epic poem written around 700BC tell us about investing? How are investors tempted to steer their money onto the rocks of investing underperformance? My guest is Michael Kemp, author of The Ulysses Contract. There's plenty of great lessons in this interview & much more in the book. There's a lot to avoid but as Michael says:
"Don't be discouraged by all the negative arguments I'm putting forth. I don't believe you need to become a champion to become a really good investor. Market returns are fantastic returns as long as you achieve them. Don't try and shoot for the stars cuz you're probably full flat on your face. But if you accept that you're gonna be delivered market returns and you are patient, then market returns can be spectacular returns given the power of compounding."

Thu, 04 May 2023 - 31min - 159 - Gary Brode - Deep Knowledge Investing | SVB Overdrawn and underfunded
Silicon Valley Bankcorp failed spectacularly in March 2023. The bank, the regulators and the media formed a circle of finger-pointing and blame: In this interview Gary explains "duration risk". Duration risk refers to the sensitivity of a bond's price to changes in interest rates. In simple terms, duration risk is the risk that the value of a bond will decrease as interest rates rise. For a bank, this risk is significant, as bonds make up a significant portion of their portfolio. If a bank doesn't manage duration risk correctly, it can result in significant losses, as was the case with Silicon Valley Bankcorp. Gary notes that understanding duration risk is a fundamental concept in finance, and anyone in a finance-related role should know this. The Federal Reserve even contacted Silicon Valley Bankcorp last year, expressing their concern about the bank's bond portfolio. However, the bank ignored the warning, and the result was catastrophic.

Thu, 20 Apr 2023 - 41min - 157 - Spencer Jakab from the Wall Street Journal | The Revolution That Wasn't
If you don't know who the sucker is at the poker table it's you. I was joined in this conversation by Wall Street Journal reporter Spencer Jakab. His latest book is “The Revolution That Wasn’t: GameStop, Reddit and the Fleecing of Small Investors.”The frenzy in meme stocks in 2021 was perceived as a Robin Hood style raid on Wall Street. Reddit forums filled with young men holding "diamond hands" taking down the financial industry. The truth was far more nuanced. We also took a detour to look at insider trading by members of Congress.
Spencer Jakab writes for and edits the Heard on the Street Column at The Wall Street Journal. He was Deputy Editor between 2015 and 2019 and wrote the Journal’s daily investing column, Ahead of the Tape, for four years before that. Spencer spent four years at Britain’s Financial Times writing the “Lex” and “On Wall Street” columns and got his start in financial journalism at Dow Jones Newswires where he was part of a SABEW-winning team covering energy markets. Spencer is the author of two books on the plight of individual investors, both published by the Portfolio imprint of Penguin Random House. “Heads I Win, Tails I Win: Why Smart Investors Fail and How To Tilt the Odds in Your Favor” (2016) and “The Revolution That Wasn’t: GameStop, Reddit and the Fleecing of Small Investors.” His first career was in finance where he spent years as a top-rated emerging market stock analyst. He lives in New Jersey with his wife and three sons.

Wed, 22 Mar 2023 - 35min - 153 - Anmol Singh - Live Traders | Getting off the emotional rollercoaster
How can investors suspend their emotions and reactions while riding the waves of a volatile stock market. In this episode I'm joined by successful Trader, Entrepreneur, and Author, Anmol Singh.
At just 22 years old, Anmol worked tirelessly to move to America on his own. He eventually saved enough money by teaching himself to trade in his dorm room at Brunel University London. Amol always aspired to be something great and through trading learned the life-changing powers of emotional control, self-trust, and personal integrity. Successful traders are used to having a checklist, they're used to following a process, unemotionally. And doing it every single time.
Anmole talks about figuring Out “Why” Before Stepping Into The Trading Arena:
Why Knowing Your Reason For Investing Is Key To Success. Deciding What’s Right For You: Are You A Short Term Or Long Term Trader? Sat, 18 Mar 2023 - 31min - 152 - Charlie McCain - Harbor Capital | ETFs disrupting the funds industry
ETFs are growing much more rapidly than mutual funds. In a sense they are a new and disruptive technology. Like the move from DVDs to streaming. ETFs can be bought and sold any time the market is open and they are fully transparent. You can see the holdings in real time. Mutual funds typically release their holdings on a 30 day lag to investors. Charlie McCain is my guest in this episode. He offers some great insights into how ETFs are constructed and how invesors can use them in their portfolios. Charlie is the chief executive officer of Harbor Capital Advisors
For over 35 years, Harbor has served as a gateway for clients to access talented, institutional caliber asset managers through active, cost-aware investments.

Tue, 21 Feb 2023 - 41min - 149 - Erik Smolinski - esInvests | The Depth of the Frailty of My Investing Plan

Adam Carroll paid off his home in record time saving over $180,000 in interest in the process, he's sharing his strategy with the world to help people become mortgage free. Wed, 08 Feb 2023 - 31min - 147 - Value Punks | Value investing - not as easy as Warren Buffett makes it seem.
Investment philosophy is always a work in progress. In this episode I was joined by substack authors Daye Deng and Balkar Sivia who have an article titled Memo: Value Investing Revisited - Rethinking volatility, conviction, and Mr. Market. Value investing is a philosophy learned from well-known investors like Warren Buffett and Benjamin Graham. There is a standard set of principles in value investing. These principles, such as "volatility is not a risk" and "conviction is key," are useful when applied correctly. However, there are always nuances and compromises in these principles that arise in practice. In this context, Daye & Balkar examined the five most common value investing principles and offer a practical perspective based on their own experiences.

Tue, 06 Dec 2022 - 32min - 140 - Tyler Tucci - SynerAI Foliko | Investing with artificial intelligence
Researching individual stocks can take a lot of time. In one particular case there were 8,599 news articles since January 1 this year that would have taken 860 hours to read. Add to that some historical data and you would have needed 1.32 years of reading to catch up and see the subtle shift in the way that Netflix was spoken before it's stock price dropped. How much information do you need and how can you put it at your fingertips?
Tyler Tucci is the head of research at SynerAI which runs Foliko an AI-powered platform for retail investors. Foliko's health factor framework evaluates each company as an investment opportunity across six dimensions to pinpoint the specific drivers of a company's growth or decline. Investment decisions have the clarity of a personal advisor with the data support of a team of analysts. Find out more at the episode blog post:. https://www.stocksforbeginners.net/blog/tucci02

Sat, 19 Nov 2022 - 9min - 137 - Simon Ree - The Tao of Trading
Simon Ree is the author of The Tao Of Trading: How To Build Abundant Wealth In Any Market Condition. But why does the world need another book on options trading? There are already hundreds of them out there. Simon thought that all of the ones that he'd read were boring. The sorts of book you'd only read if your boss was making you do it. He thinks that sometimes the authors like to show off how good they are at complex math and difficult concepts. He tried to write a book on options trading that was simple, engaging and fun to read.

"Australia’s mining industry is a pillar of the Australian economy, with the country being one of the world’s largest exporters of coal, iron ore, bauxite, alumina, and many other resources. The gross value added by the mining industry was in the hundreds of billions of Australian dollars in the past decade alone. The real gross value added of the mining industry accounted for over 10 percent of the total gross value added in Australia, making it one of the largest economic industries in the country. Over 180 thousand people were employed in the Australian mining industry. Historically, several mining booms have increased investment in mining, leading to higher incomes from mining activities and more immigration to Australia." - Mining industry in Australia - statistics & facts | Statista

Fri, 07 Oct 2022 - 11min - 126 - Ross Dawson - Thriving on Overload
We live in a world with an abundance of valuable information at our fingertips. But the downside is exhaustion from dizzying information overload and a 24-hour news cycle that makes it overwhelming to sift through and process. In fact, in early 2020, 66% of Americans reported being “worn out” by the amount of news.
In Thriving on Overload: The Five Powers for Success in a World of Exponential Information (McGraw Hill, 9/6/22), futurist and entrepreneur Ross Dawson contends that the capacity to thrive on limitless information is now the single most important capability for success, yielding not just powerful insight, world-leading expertise, and better decisions, but also improved wellbeing. Ross draws on the experiences of his world-class clients, which include Citibank, Coca-Cola, Google, KPMG, Microsoft, News Limited, Oracle, Procter & Gamble, PwC,andWalmart. He shows how to make information overload something to capitalize on instead of run from—and how this can improve your career (in any field), ventures, investments and life.

Mon, 19 Sep 2022 - 24min - 121 - QUICK TIP - Becoming Financially Solid
What is the season of life you’re in and how are you going to put your financial house in order? Robert Farrington is the founder of The College Investor the #1 tool to help get people out of student loan debt, learn how to earn more money, understand how to start investing and build real wealth. In this Quick Tip Robert explains how it’s not about searching for a big win in the stock market, but implementing long-term, incremental changes.
"What's gonna make a big difference in your life is consistently investing over time and putting as much money as you possibly can into your investments. And then, if you can just get the market rate of return 10% a year, you are going to be solid by the time you're getting close to retirement, and, if you start this whole process when you're 20 years old 22 years old, you're going to be solid by the time you're 35. That's really the name of the game. It's not about what you invest in, it's not about picking stocks, it is about how much you can possibly get into your investment accounts as early as you physically can."

"The fear was that the New York Stock Exchange was next, because when you think about America and you think about developed nations and developed markets, the New York Stock Exchange is a symbol. If nothing else, it's a symbol of America. It's a symbol of freedom. It's a symbol of capitalism. It's a symbol of the free world. Because if somebody really wanted to make a statement, I mean, they made a statement, but had they flown a plane into the Exchange, they would have brought this country and really the global financial markets to a standstill."

Sat, 03 Sep 2022 - 7min - 117 - Mario Payne - Letbob.com | Making investing fun and simple
My guest today helped to found the first African American owned AI ETF on theNew York Stock Exchange.
The median net worth for Black households is currently $24K, compared to $188K for white households, according to McKinsey and Company. This massive wealth disparity reflects a long history of racism, including lack of access to education, financial services, and barriers to ownership. Mario Payne believes that technology can be used to fix structural problems that have plagued the Black community for hundreds of years. Artificial intelligence (AI) has the potential to transform financial services and equity ownership. Mario made history in February 2022. The company he co-owns, launched the first African American owned AI ETF on theNew York Stock Exchange. The symbol is LETB. The goal of this fund is to limit investment losses while maximizing gains. Mario generously shared his views on maximising income, getting started in the market, and some tips on learning about investing.

Sat, 27 Aug 2022 - 7min - 115 - David Maurice Sharp - Investing Creatively
There's an old cliché about the "starving" artist that may have a basis in reality, but isn’t set in stone! My guest David Maurice Sharp joined me to discuss the tricky financial waters that come with following the artistic path. He's a financial educator that provides valuable advice for performing artists like actors, dancers, lighting gurus, costumers or stagehands on investing, saving and building a diversified and stable financial portfolio. While he writes specifically for artists who have fluctuating, uncertain and sometimes limited streams of income, he promotes an understanding of finances and the investment world that has lessons for anyone starting their financial education. David was a founding member and initiated the formation of the Thriving Artists Investment Club, a limited partnership established by a small group of artist/friends to educate one another about investing and personal portfolio management. Through that, he also gained greater insight into how the artist can best be educated about their finances and investing. For more than a decade, David has been teaching investment workshops at HB Studio, an acting conservatory in New York City. This has provided him with the invaluable opportunity to hone his ideas for educating artists in regard to their finances, and to enjoy the success experienced by those who have implemented the ideas and techniques that he promotes.
In October 2014, David was named a “money hero” for his work in educating artists about their finances by Money magazine. He is the author of The Thriving Artist: Saving and Investing for Performers, Artists, and the Stage & Film Industriesand a contributing author to A Life in Dance: A Practical Guide.

Sat, 20 Aug 2022 - 8min - 113 - David Keller - StockCharts.com | Controlling emotions with technical analysis
How can we judge whether fear or greed is prevailing in a stock, ETF or index? It's not something that is shown by studying company reports. Some say that fundamental analysis helps you to know what to buy and technical analysis tells you when to buy (or sell as the case may be). Technical analysis uses price and volume alone, and assumes that everything we need to know is embodied in the chart. These charts are used to help identify patterns and trends that may give signals of possible future price movements.
David Keller, CMT is Chief Market Strategist at StockCharts.com, where he helps investors minimize behavioural biases through technical analysis. He is a frequent host on StockCharts TV, and he relates mindfulness techniques to investor decision-making in his blog, The Mindful Investor.

Greed, fear, euphoria, despair, over-confidence and regret. These are the greatest emotional obstacles in the way of stock market investing according to my guest Dr Stanley Teitelbaum. In this quick tip Stanley explains the range of emotions that contribute to our poor investing outcomes, the negative thoughts that we experience and the steps to take to minimise their impact.
Too many of us have internalized negative attitudes about ourselves as inadequate when it comes to managing our investments. Demystifying and overcoming these personal obstacles, along with acquiring and implementing several well-tested strategies can facilitate a greater degree of success.

Fri, 12 Aug 2022 - 9min - 111 - Spencer Jakab from the Wall Street Journal | The Revolution That Wasn't

Mon, 08 Aug 2022 - 45min - 110 - QUICK TIP - Engineering your risk management
Risk management is crucial in investing. Keith Smith is a former army engineer and a portfolio manager at Bonhoeffer Capital Management. In this Quick Tip, Keith describes how he manages risk like an engineer. Obviously, engineers are very interested in managing risk. I mean, you don't want that plane falling out of the sky.
"I think the real aspect from the engineering perspective is just the approach. I mean, engineering, you're taught a lot about margin of safety. The other thing that I did when I was in the air force is I was working on a satellite that was designed to live through a nuclear war. And one of the departments that I worked in was sort of survivability, which in essence, was the ability of basically the system to survive that. So you design a lot of margin in there. So basically what you're trying to do in terms of looking for investments, you're trying to look for investments that have a margin of safety. If things don't turn out the way you expect, you're not gonna lose a lot of money, but if things do turn out the way you expect, you can get some really nice upside."

Mon, 01 Aug 2022 - 30min - 108 - QUICK TIP - Are thematic ETFs Like the Railroads and Telegraph?
In the US alone, the ETF sector has exploded into a $5 trillion industry. The number of funds has blossomed, which means that there are many funds that offer increasing specificity and focus. Thematic ETFs aim to isolate a target niche of the market. They can be narrow or relatively broad in scope. Many offer exposure to sectors that have been previously unavailable to retail investors. And often they are created to respond to investing fashions.
In this Quick Tip, Morningstar Product Manager Mark Lamonica explains how thematic ETFs can often be compared to the telegraph (the Victorian Internet), railroads and fibre optics. At the time they had a compelling story, but the businesses that benefited from them were not necessarily the ones providing them. I love hearing strongly held opinions and it's worthwhile for beginners to understand that you are often being marketed to, rather than being provided with options to increase your investment returns.

Fri, 29 Jul 2022 - 7min - 107 - Dion Pouncil - Listen to the words to learn finance
Dion Pouncil believes that energy management, managing your thoughts, managing your words, managing your actions, managing your emotions, and acquiring knowledge, are the keys to becoming wealthier. Being a sponge for data. Being a consistent winner, having more than you spend, comes from the repetition of principles. That's why certain athletes, when they get in business and they do learn, become successful because the same skill sets that it took them to become the professional level athletes can apply. Patience, self-control, discipline, work ethic, dedication and perseverance. One of my favourite parts of this interview is when Dion said "listen to the words". This means that even though you may not understand the language of investing, by constantly "listening to the words'. The language will become clear and you will begin to understand what's happening and how you can become a better investor. MoneySkool.com teaches everyday people about mindset and creating generational wealth with simple to use, beautifully designed, and easy to understand content on investing, trading, Stocks, Options, Futures, Bonds, Forex, and Crypto.
Pouncil Capital partners with institutional investors and high-net-worth individuals to produce absolute risk adjusted performance returns.
Dion is Principal & Chief Investment Officer of Pouncil Capital (a systematic hedge fund) and lead instructor at MoneySkool.com. (a financial education streaming app).

Find out more at the episode blog post:. https://www.stocksforbeginners.net/blog/tucci

The book addresses how to identify and overcome emotional roadblocks, blind spots, and errors in judgment that interfere with profitable investing, and how to develop greater trust in one’s ability to navigate investments. In this episode we discuss the emotions that investors are feeling in this period of market turmoil. Bear markets are not very unusual. Since 1926, there's been 15 episodes of at least 20% declines, meaning that there's been at least 15 bear markets in that period of time. What's important to remember is that on average, the average total loss from the peak in every bear market has been almost 35%. We are now down around 24%, according to the Dow Jones Industrial Average. That means we're still significantly short of the average, which means there's a room for one or more additional down legs. And that's scary.

Mon, 04 Jul 2022 - 32min - 100 - Omid Malekan - Money, Trust and the Future of Finance
Is money a mass delusion? What role does trust play in our financial system, and is there a way of doing it better? I wanted to find out more about money. The more I thought about, the less sense it made. Does money only have value because we agree to that illusion? Omid Malekan joined me to explain the history of money, how trust works, and why blockchain technology is re-engineering that trust. Omid Malekan has spent years being confused about crypto, so you don’t have to be.

Tue, 21 Jun 2022 - 39min - 99 - Jeffrey G. Kamys - Inherent Wealth Fund | The hard lessons of inflation
Inflation is the cruellest tax. I met Jeffrey Kamys this week as we discussed an upcoming episode. In the meantime we recorded this conversation about inflation, whether we are already in a recession, how inflation is created and how central banks "print" money.

Tue, 14 Jun 2022 - 28min - 97 - Sir Ronald Cohen - THE IMPACT REVOLUTION
Sir Ronald Cohen, Author of IMPACT: Reshaping capitalism to drive real change & Chair of the Global Steering Group for Impact Investment. Sir Ronald Cohen is an Egyptian-born British businessman, who fled his birthplace with his family in 1957, following the Suez Crisis, with only £10 to their name. Despite his family’s economic struggles, Sir Ronald’s hard work saw him win a scholarship to Oxford and then attend Harvard Business School.
Referred to by the British press as ‘the father of British venture capital’ and ‘the father of social investment’, he is now leading the Impact Revolution – a movement seeking to achieve real social and environmental change. With an impressive background in management consulting, venture capitalism, and social investments, Sir Ronald has a compelling perspective on how to reshape capitalism.
We spoke about his Harvard Business School research into impact weighted accounts. This research measured the environmental impacts from the operations of 3,000 companies and found 450 of them create more damage than profit, 1,000 create damage equivalent to 25% of their profit, and 2/3 create damage less than 25% of their profit. Sir Ronald believes changing the world and making a profit go hand in hand. He says investors should put money into the hands of those who do good and do well at the same time.
