The ATC Doublecut with Micah Woods
I discuss ATC blog posts, with supplementary information, stories, and the reasons why I thought the topic was worth writing about, and worth reading about. Thus, a doublecut of these topics. This covers grass selection, playability, and all the work done to create a certain type of turfgrass surface.
- 135 - Optimal and practical overseeding windows with Jim Huntoon
Jim Huntoon joined me from Horry-Georgetown Technical College to discuss overseeding and the hows and whys of this common practice on warm-season turf that goes dormant in winter.

Listen to the ATC Office Hours podcast at https://office-hours.asianturfgrass.com/Tue, 19 Sep 2023 - 108 - Does a location exist with 365 days a year of high GP for cool-season grass?
The temperature-based growth potential, developed by PACE Turf, transforms the average air temperature to a growth potential (GP). The GP is conveniently scaled from 0 to 1 (or from 0 to 100%, if you prefer), and high GP values indicate that the air temperature is close to an optimum for grass growth. This episodes looks at a very interesting question: are there places on earth with a high GP for cool-season grass, all the year round?

Sun, 14 May 2023 - 88 - Terminology of turfgrass soils: total organic material (#OM246) and soil organic matter (SOM)
Brian Whitlark is the West region director of the USGA Green Section. We talked about total organic material testing of turfgrass soils. This is distinct from soil organic matter testing. Soil organic matter is measured on material that has already passed a 2 mm sieve and thus is no larger than a grain of sand. This sieving removes much of the thatch and mat and living plant material from the sample.
- There's more about this, including definitions of various items related to this, in https://www.asianturfgrass.com/post/organic-matter-terminology-in-turfgrass-soils/You can see how a soil sample is tested in this video from Brookside Labs https://youtu.be/PyL2bfdiBdERichard Forsyth from Royal Melbourne also spoke about something related to the shear strength that Brian and I discussed https://www.youtube.com/live/T-w6CQzGzKc?feature=share

Dandelion (Taraxacum officinale) abundance can be increased by potassium (K) and lime applications. Adding K fertilizer when it is not needed by the grass, or adding lime to increase the pH when the grass does not require such an adjustment, could lead to increased competitiveness of dandelions in that sward.

I used to tell people that GP is just a number, and if they wanted to modify it to fit the way grass grows at their location, then go ahead and do so. I don't say that anymore. Instead, I recommend using the standard equation. Why? To facilitate direct comparisons between sites, knowing that everyone has used the same equation.

A little bit of N is just that, a little bit, causing a small amount of growth. But with turfgrass being a perennial crop, those little bits of N eventually add up to a lot.
Thu, 12 Jan 2023 - 69 - Fourteen of my favorite turf photos from 2022
I discuss the interesting things I saw in 14 turfgrass photos in 2022. From zoysia to boats to traffic to tournaments to organic matter loss on ignition crucibles, this post discusses a range of topics.
Mon, 09 Jan 2023 - 68 - Planning forward, measuring backward, plus a year end miscellany
I explain how I like to use growth potential for planning, and then how I adjust based on measurements looking backward. This is also a year end miscellany, because I discuss five more ATC blog posts, including the top 10 posts of the year.
Fri, 30 Dec 2022 - 67 - Total organic material testing (OM246) to measure how much grass grew underground
Total organic material measured in the soil will include plant parts and thatch. Soil organic matter, on the other hand, excludes plant material. This episode discusses this distinction and shows the valuable information that can be obtained by measuring total organic material in addition to soil organic matter.
Tue, 06 Dec 2022 - 66 - Park Grass experiment photo gallery, fertilizers, and weeds in turfgrass
There's an interactive photo gallery with images from each of the Park Grass experiment subplots. I discuss this, and why it is worth looking at, and why dogma about turfgrass fertilization leads to more weeds.
Thu, 01 Dec 2022 - 65 - Is carbon the next frontier in fertilization?
A blog post from 2018 continues to be one of the most-read on the ATC site. It's about carbon fertilizer, and consists of quotes from Bryan and Tyler Hopkins' article on the topic. Their conclusion is "forget about fertilizing with carbon."
Sat, 19 Nov 2022 - 64 - Coring (hollow-tine cultivation) as a growth stimulator, plus estimated N mineralization from SOM
Is the real benefit of coring the growth stimulation that happens when turf is cored? Should soil organic matter reduction be considered a reason for or benefit of coring? Plus, how much nitrogen mineralization should be expected from soil organic matter.
Thu, 03 Nov 2022 - 63 - Overseeding timing, early, late, and optimum, by delta growth potential (GP) with Larry Stowell
Larry Stowell joined me on the ATC Doublecut to discuss winter overseeding of warm-season grasses with cool-season grasses, specifically by checking the temperature conditions by a delta (difference) between cool-season and warm-season growth potential.
Thu, 27 Oct 2022 - 62 - Why I recommend annual soil testing for professionally managed turfgrass grown in sand rootzones
One of ATC's soil testing clients had soil pH drop from 6 to 4.8 on tee surfaces from 2019 to 2022, with no soil testing in the three years between. For sand rootzones, I prefer annual testing because it allows one to catch these changes and adjust before things change too much.
Mon, 24 Oct 2022 - 61 - Big picture implications of #MLSN, SLAN, & SPF phosphorus recommendations, plus cumulative #ClipVol
I set myself a big challenge for this episode: to try to explain clearly what I was trying to communicate in a recent blog post about P fertilizer recommendations, and why the intermediate steps I showed might be confusing, but the bottom line result is actually simple and important. Plus, an underutilized way to look at #ClipVol data.
Sun, 16 Oct 2022 - 60 - The most common soil testing mistakes, and how to avoid them, with Doug Soldat
Soil testing can be a valuable tool, but to make use of the results most effectively, one needs to avoid common mistakes. Doug Soldat from the University of Wisconsin joined me to talk about the recommended way to use soil tests (soil nutrient analyses) for turfgrass.
Tue, 11 Oct 2022 - 59 - An alternative reference for frost delays with Jim Huntoon
In some parts of the world, traffic on frosted turf is forbidden. In other parts of the world, traffic is allowed, perhaps even encouraged. Jim Huntoon and I discussed this phenomenon and frost delays in general.
Thu, 06 Oct 2022 - 58 - Using the turfgrass growth ratio to adjust for site-specific conditions with Jason Haines
The turfgrass growth ratio (speedo) was developed by Jason Haines. It's a ratio of actual growth (grass clippings) divided by a temperature-adjusted standard amount of expected clippings. This simple ratio turns out to be surprisingly useful. We discussed this and related turf management issues.
Wed, 28 Sep 2022 - 57 - Why soil samples should be air dried before sending to the lab
The procedures of soil sample collection and handling before sending to the lab are important. Reduce unknowns and variability in the test results by drying the samples prior to sending them to the lab. Also, collect samples to a consistent depth. And let the machines at the lab remove thatch and verdure.
Mon, 26 Sep 2022 - 56 - Turfgrass in Iceland, frost, 24 hours of golf, and #MLSN with Bjarni Hannesson
Bjarni Hannesson joined me on a late summer day from Reykjavik to discuss turfgrass management in Iceland and the surprising number of golf rounds played at courses in southwestern Iceland, how he handles frost delays, and whether #MLSN works in such a cold environment.
Sun, 18 Sep 2022 - 55 - Grass color, consistency, and the oldest course in Thailand with Joe Gulotti
Joe Gulotti joined me to discuss another blog post that bombed, and we ended up discussing mango drinks, birdie dances, consistency in playing conditions, and turf color.
Thu, 15 Sep 2022 - 54 - Mowing stripes on tea, 18 turfgrass videos about greenkeeping in Japan, plus best lift access snow
I describe mowing stripes on tea trees (bushes), explain what I put in 18 videos about greenkeeping from a recent trip to Japan, and count the number of days with snow cover in Hokkaido's two largest cities.
Mon, 12 Sep 2022 - 53 - Manganese deficiency, Doublecut show stats, and my New Zealand presentation highlights

Mon, 05 Sep 2022 - 52 - Drought performance of warm-season grasses plus a KBC Augusta data review
I reviewed the data I collected at the KBC Augusta tournament including green speed and firmness, the bobble test, and soil water content, along with discussion of research into warm-season grass performance during drought, and the standout (in a bad way) case of zoysia.
Tue, 30 Aug 2022 - 51 - Managing seashore paspalum "dry and lean" with Jon Wall, plus tournament prep in Vietnam
