Get Behind the Brand to learn how to build your brand. Get smarter and make more money in business by listening to my podcast with some of the smartest people on the planet. I’m Bryan Elliott, helping you build your brand.
Founded in 2008, Behind the Brand with Bryan Elliott is a show about innovators, entrepreneurs and the stories behind their success. It's like a backstage pass inside the brand strategy and marketing minds, companies and habits of some of the smartest and most interesting people on the planet. Host, Bryan Elliott decodes these stories to help you turn their wisdom into practical tactics that you can use to improve your life and grow your business. Why do this? I'm someone who loves to tell stories that I hope will inspire and educate others to find their reason for being. I basically invented the podcast I wish I had when I quit my corporate job and started my own business. I made a lot of mistakes and figured things out the hard way. I've been inspired by so many of my guests and I know you'll find a ton of value here as well. Podcast series / Marketing:

Fri, 15 Mar 2024 - 156 - Seth Godin's Top 10 Success Lessons | Podcast series / Marketing
Hi everyone, welcome to another episode of the show, I’m your host, Bryan Elliott. I just wanted to take a moment to thank all of you for listening and helping to make this show what it is.
We’ve had a rush of new fans and followers and I couldn’t be more excited to be on this journey with you.
Behind the Brand started as a side hustle because in 2008 my little start up was in trouble. I had just resigned from a big brand marketing job at one of the biggest studios in Hollywood.
My dream was to open a production company with a focus on building brands thru the art of storytelling. But it was looking like the Great Recession was going to get the best of me and I didn’t know what to do.
That year I read a book called Tribes written by one of my favorite authors, Seth Godin. It became a roadmap for me — and a North Star to navigate very choppy waters.
Spoiler alert— I made it thru some tough times and now this show is dedicated to all of you as well as anyone who is trying to build a successful business and brand.
Here’s a little mix tape I made of Seth’s Top 10 lessons — here we go!
P.S. Here's another video with Seth you might like explaining everything you may not know about marketing...
More?
Check this out.Wed, 13 Mar 2024 - 155 - Brand It Like Serhant | Real Estate AND Media Mogul, Ryan Serhant | Podcast series / Marketing
Ryan Serhant might be the king of East Coast real estate but he's also building a media empire. Why? The answer might not surprise you...
Serhant is building a media empire on top of this real estate prowess for several reasons. The first reason is obvious: helping other real estate agents who he employs build a brand like Serhants is good business. Another reason building a brand matters is because clients now require it.
That is, when Serhant or his agents do marketing for a property, the client builds in social media exposure (via Serhant's vast influence) into the contracts.
The final reason Serhant is doubling down on media is because as it turns out, the same principles that apply to real estate could also apply to a lot of other industries and THEY could also become Serhant clients via the media portal.

Mon, 11 Mar 2024 - 154 - The Pursuit of Dreams | Nigel Sylvester | Podcast series / Marketing
Sometimes you're just born with it. At least that's how it feels with the current G.O.A.T. of BMX lifestyle, Nigel Sylvester. Nigel was just a toddler on his little red tricycle when he was drifting around cones set up as race course by his cousin on his driveway.
Admiring and modeling the great Dave Mirra growing up, Sylvester went pro at age 18 and was recruited by Mirra to rep his team. Flashforward 18 years later and Sylvester is still going strong but has expanded his brand into events, fashion, art, books and more.
Nigel Sylvester is the new BXM icon for young up-in-comers to model. He's a great example of someone in constant pursuit of dreams, riding all around the world, while also keeping it real with his roots deeply planted in Queens NY.

Fri, 08 Mar 2024 - 153 - Timm Chiusano is All of Us | Podcast series / Marketing
Timm Chiusano is a very talented media executive with a corporate 9-5 managing a team and small business clients under his purview. He's also got a growing side hustle as a very unlikely social media influencer with more than 1M followers on TikTok as well as an expanding audience on other platforms.
How did this happen? How did he do it?
In my observation, at the heart of Timm's success and popularity is the fact that he's all of us. That is, he's a mild-mannered guy living in Brooklyn with his beautiful family trying his best to live life to the fullest.
He has stress and struggles at home and work. He battles with being in ruts and mild depressive episodes. Life is wonderful and difficult. Sound familiar?
He's a husband and father living his life out loud in public for all of us to see --and relate to. He's up at 4:00am to catch up on work stuff, then takes his daughter to school...and piano lessons...and karate...and school plays. His wife is a hard worker as well and has inspired Timm to start running more and taking good care of himself. It's a throw back and hybrid to Norman Rockwell meets Casey Neistat at the height of his daily vlog days.
Now with powerful representation and backing from Night Media, the same firm that reps MrBeast, it just seems like a matter of time before Timm quits his day job to go all-in on his storytelling and content creation career.

Wed, 06 Mar 2024 - 152 - March to the Beat of Your Own Drum | Twenty One Pilots' Josh Dun | Podcast series / Marketing
Tyler Joseph and Josh Dun make up the talented band Twenty One Pilots.
I first met Josh coming off the heels of my first Twenty One Pilots concert in 2017 when someone from his team reached out to me for him to come on the podcast to talk about his new company and venture with Haylee Williams from Paramore. The two of them teamed up to do a hair dye product…
Since then, Tyler and Josh have done a lot, including making new music to get us thru this Fourth Turning — they both go married and Tyler has a couple of kids. In fact, Tyler and his wife Jenna are reported to be having their 3rd child next month.
Front man Tyler gets a lot of attention but the more shy Josh, who feels more comfortable doing his talking with drum sticks rarely does interviews — so this one means a lot to me as I’m a big fan. I’m so impressed with this band of 2 who puts on an incredible show an makes music that millions of fans like me love.
This shout out is not sponsored but Twenty One pilots has a new single out called Overcompensate and their new album Clancy drops in May. I’ll leave the links in the description so you can listen or get tickets to a concert coming to a city near you.

Wed, 28 Feb 2024 - 150 - Why Some Hard Things ARE Worth Doing | Plunge Co founders, Ryan Duey & Mike Garrett | Podcast series / Marketing
Ryan Duey and Mike Garrett didn't start out to build a $100 million business in 3 years -- but that's what they've done! These two friends started Plunge from humble beginnings off the heels of a dormant economy during the pandemic and grew the business the old fashioned way by meeting and creating demand for an incredible cold plunge experience at a competitive market price.
Word is spreading fast but only 3 years in feels like this dynamic duo is just getting started. Plunge just launched Plunge Sauna, a dry sauna unit that anyone would be proud to set up their backyard sanctuary. I hope you enjoy this full range of conversation about building a brand from scratch; the best deal Shark Tank ever missed and much more!

In 2006, Andrew Wilkinson was a young college dropout working as a barista in Canada while pondering his next move. His trajectory changed after a casual conversation with two web designers who had turned the coffee shop into a makeshift office. Wilkinson, napkin math in hand and enamored by the potential profits and lifestyle, took the bus to the local bookstore and bought a book on web design. Soon enough, he picked up his first local client for $500.
“I ran the numbers in my head, and I realized that these guys were making a fortune,” remembers Wilkinson. “I want to be the guy drinking the espresso, not the guy making it.” Flash-forward twenty years, Andrew stands at the helm of Tiny, a publicly traded conglomerate of 40+ diverse businesses that span both the digital and physical realms, from social networks like LetterBox and Dribble to the iconic Aeropress coffee maker and, recently, Yerba Mate brand Mateina with Andrew Huberman.
How exactly did Andrew Wilkinson go from espresso guy to running an empire? Listen to this episode to find out.

One of my traditions in the new year is to read a quote often attributed to F. Scott Fitzgerald. Based on my research, this actually may be an adaptation from a screenplay or movie -- but whatever the case and for me --the words and message are more important than the context of the person (who may have written it):
“For what it’s worth … it’s never too late, or in my case too early, to be whoever you want to be. There’s no time limit. Start whenever you want. You can change or stay the same. There are no rules to this thing. We can make the best or the worst of it. I hope you make the best of it. I hope you see things that startle you. I hope you feel things you never felt before. I hope you meet people who have a different point of view. I hope you live a life you’re proud of, and if you’re not, I hope you have the courageto start all over again.”

What can I say about Seth Godin that hasn’t already been said. Seth literally created and defined the term, “Work that matters” and this philosophy has become a North Star for me to aspire to in my own work. He’s also helped me see Purple Cows; lead a Tribe; become a Linchpin; cross over Dips; Poke more Boxes; Not Fly too Close to the Sun and focusing on Practice to name a few. I'm proud to call him a mentor and friend.
In this informal chat we talk about his book on leadership, The Song of Significance: A New Manifesto for Teams
In the write about it says, "The Song of Significance is a rousing contemplation on work: why it is the way it is, why it’s gotten so bad, what all of us–especially leaders–can do to make it better. Economic instability and the rise of remote work have left us disconnected and disengaged. Alarmed managers are responding with harsh top-down edicts, layoffs, surveillance and mandatory meetings. Workers are responding by quiet quitting and working their wage. But it doesn't have to be this way."
In Seth’s regular fashion he’s pointing out stuff that doesn’t work well and offering solutions about how to fix it. Here we go!

"If I follow the trail of your stress, it will take me to your deepest fears…"
I have a confession — prior to meeting Tony Robbins, I was not the biggest Tony Robbins fan. I’m not the kind of person who would attend one of his events…jump up and down or tolerate him shouting at me during a 10-hour seminar. But then he taught me, "Life is the dance between what we desire and fear most." Tony who is larger than life actually made a huge impact on how I think about myself and the world. I still don't have any interest in his seminars but I did learn something valuable and believe you will too.

"The Work Reveals Itself as You Go..."
I just finished Rick Rubin’s new book called The Creative Act. It’s a book on his process and his methods. If you don’t know Rick Rubin, he’s one of the most prolific music producers on the planet — taking the good work and making it better for talent like The Beastie Boys, AC/DC, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Johnny Cash, Tom Petty, Weezer, Linkin Park, Neil Diamond, Metallica, Shakira, — almost the entire A-list music industry including Dan Reynolds of Imagine Dragons. Dan reveals his music making process as well as gets really vulnerable about why his music is so personal. You’re going to love this one.

Sometimes the riskiest thing to do is play it safe. This is the incredible story and rise of the Momentous brand. 2016 was a remarkable year as four very different people headed down four very separate paths that in just a few short years would intersect in the most serendipitous way. Each person was at a different stage of life and experience but started to crank what bestselling author Jim Collins calls a flywheel. There was a young and recently retired NFL player, turned entrepreneur. A media mogul who started a VC firm. A high school student with a big idea. And last but not least, there was a former Bay Area Grom, who spent time in a youth detention center as a teen, but turned is life around with a passion for teaching science. In 2016 he would transfer from San Diego State to a new position at Stanford University.
Collins writes,“No matter how dramatic the end result, good-to-great transformations never happen in one fell swoop. In building a great company there is no single defining action, no grand program, no one killer innovation, no solitary lucky break, no miracle moment. Rather, the process resembles relentlessly pushing a giant, heavy flywheel, turn upon turn, building momentum until a point of breakthrough, and beyond.”

When I was a kid growing up in the 80s and 90s, one of my favorite shows, playing on repeat in reruns, was the Twilight Zone created by Rod Serling.
It was a well written show where characters find themselves dealing with “disturbing or unusual events” that usually ended with an unexpected plot twist and moral to the story for everyone to ponder as food for thought.
We are living in interesting times to say the least — it kind of feels like a Twilight Zone episode sometimes and it’s becoming increasingly difficult to know what is true and what is fiction. As a kid, the show was one of my first exposures to the idea of critical thinking, which by definition means, “the objective analysis and evaluation of an issue in order to form a judgment.”
But critical thinking alone doesn’t always get us to the truth. And it turns out that humans are not naturally born with the gift of being objective. We really have to work at it. To think critically, we must be aware of our own biases and assumptions — and then apply consistent standards when considering the sources. Sources are tricky too. I remember a time when I believed what I saw on the news. Believed that doctors got into medicine just to help people. Believed that my religion was God’s true church on Earth and my church leaders upheld the highest standards of honesty and would never lie or do harm to anyone.
This episode with Neil deGrasse Tyson is NOT about trying to break your shelf or dissuade you from your deeply held beliefs. It’s about learning more about critical thinking and the scientific method so you can figure out what is real and what fiction. To be a seeker of truth and not be caught up in the trap of group-think.
I have only recently rediscovered one of the most credible sources of truth and light, has been within me all along. And if I had any advice, I think that’s a pretty good place to start.Special thanks to our sponsorPlunge!

I’d like to re-introduce you to Alex Hormozi, a entrepreneur who is having a moment. If you don’t know Alex, he’s pretty amazing and is an amalgamation of influencers who have gone before as if Gary Vaynerchuk, Russel Brunson, Tony Robbins and Schwarzenegger had a baby. He's an archetype of an influencer who is selling a lifestyle like his own. It’s not a get rich scheme, but more of lifestyle of thinking and acting like someone rich — so as to become so.
Alex was raised by his Iranian-American dad with whom he didn’t alway see eye to eye, and spend the better part of his adult life trying to be enough for him. After contemplating his own mortality, he finally realized that he had to follow his own dreams at the expense of possibly losing his father’s approval and never having a relationship. He embarked on a journey that ultimately led to incredible success in the world of entrepreneurship. However, his path was far from conventional.
Alex initially followed the traditional route, earning a degree in Organizational Development with a focus on Corporate Strategy from Vanderbilt . He even landed a prestigious job as a management consultant with high-level security clearance at a big job. But after two years, he realized the 9-to-5 life wasn't for him, and he decided to strike out on his own.
Passionate about fitness, Alex found a gym owner mentor who taught him the ropes. He lived well below his means trying to learn everything about the business. He was finally able to buy his own gym in 2013.
Within just three years, he expanded to three more locations, generating substantial monthly revenue but made mistakes with partnerships that went sour and nearly cost him everything. With his back up against the wall, he pivoted to training gyms how to get more leads and sales and eventually decided to sell off more than 32 businesses in just two years, earning him millions of dollars.
Beyond his business acumen, Alex is also an accomplished author, and just released his second book, $100M Leads, which broke a Guinness world record selling 100,000 books in one day. Alex is living master class on how to build a personal brand to accomplish your goals. Even if you’ve heard this one before, it’s worth another listen — with pen and paper in hand —please enjoy this re-booted recording with the incomparable Alex Hormozi.

This episode is brought to by Vimeo…I’ve been a Pro User of Vimeo basically since I started my production company in 2010. Vimeo is for creative professions like me and I use it several different ways:
- It’s a place for me to upload videos with a password for my clients to be able to review and download the work I’m doing for them. There’s no compression or crushing of black colors or over- saturation like when I upload to Youtube. My clients get the full 4K resolution HD as it was intended.I use it to host / broadcast live events…I also use Vimeo for my portfolio, case studies —and it never has annoying pre roll ads. I can create a customized player and keep people on my landing page so they don’t get distracted and go down the rabbit hole watching someone else’s stuff. What you may not know is that Vimeo can be used if you’re in HR to put all your on-boarding videos in one place.. you could do the same if you teach a course…put your vids behind a paywall and charge for it.Need a videographer, Creative director or editor? Vimeo let’s you post jobs or find creative professionals.
There are a ton more options so I would suggest checking them out. Just go to Vimeo.com and see what’s possible!

Have you ever managed your own media campaign? You know, spent money on some kind of advertising for your business to get new customers or sell a product or service?
The barriers to entry are lower than ever. Meta Company, via Facebook and Instagram, make it a low lift to spend money these days on the platform. But while paid media buying is simple, it is not always easy to see results. What's your ROAS? CAC? There's so many acronyms to scrutinize!
To buy media at a high level, spending thousands — even millions of dollars -- a month for clients requires a rare skill set of strategy, analytics, marketing savvy and intuition.
This is a must-listen episode for anyone who’s spending any kind of money to promote their products or services. Austin Elliott is one of the best in game today and will take you to school in everything you probably don’t know about media and ads.

You may not know Tyler Denk’s name yet, but you will.
He looks like pretty normal a 20-something kid who came from a middle class neighborhood in Maryland — now transplanted to sunny Southern California. He’s hungry with ambition and got that look in his eyes -- like the eye of tiger. You know, that feeling we've all had when we thought we had the world in the palm of our hands.
Tyler is building what some might call a boring business — a SASS product called Beehiiv for people who write and email newsletters. The thing is, newsletters are only boring if you suck at writing them.
And there’s millions of dollars to be made from them with case studies like Alex Liberman and Austin Rief’s Morning Brew that sold for $75M where Tyler wrote most of the early code… There’s The Hustle which the Sam Parr sold for $25M to Hubspot and others. Tyler is self-made and he is anything but ordinary.
If you’re into music you might know him from his world famous Big Desk Energy playlist on Spotify. After Morning Brew, he did a season at Youtube Music, got Covid in 2020 and had to cancel a much needed vacation to San Diego. Instead, he build what might be the world’s most intuitive and effective SASS product for great writers who want to build an audience via an amazing newsletter.
If you know, you know.
Enjoy this master class of newsletter marketing with Tyler Denk…

This episode is brought to you by Eight Sleep.
Good sleep is the ultimate game changer and the Eight Sleep Pod is the ultimate sleep machine. Consistent good sleep can help reduce the likelihood of serious health issues, decrease the risk of heart disease, lower blood pressure and even reduce the risk of alzheimer’s .
Yet, still more than 30% of Americans struggle with sleep and temperature is one of the main causes of poor sleep. This was exactly my problem as I tend to sleep hot…and it was hard to get to sleep. But, now, I am falling asleep in record time, faster than I have before. It is the most advanced solution on the market for thermoregulation. It pairs dynamic cooling and heating with biometric tracking. You can add the Cover to any mattress, and start sleeping as cool as 55°F or as hot as 110°F.
If you sleep with someone, no worries, The temperature of the Cover will adjust each side of the bed based on your sleep stages, biometrics, and bedroom temperature, reacting intelligently to create the optimal sleeping environment — all controlled by an app on your phone. The result: Clinical data shows that Eight Sleep users experience up to 19% increase in recovery, a 32% improvement in sleep quality, and 34% more deep sleep.
With more deep sleep, I get better physical recovery, hormone regulation, and mental clarity and perform at my best. And since I’m up late filming and editing this series on a weekly basis, I seriously count on my Eight Sleep to get my through it. My listeners get a very special offer. Just Go to eightsleep.com/BRY and check it out for yourself.

Go to: https://www.behindthebrand.tv/vipTue, 25 Jul 2023 - 124 - Why You Struggle with Brand Marketing & Business | Bill Harper, Brand Boss | Podcast series / Marketing
I found Brand Boss, Bill Harper on TikTok of all places where he has built an impressive library of short form content around branding and marketing. Harper runs an agency out of North Carolina called WMH and it's worth checking out. Bill and I riff on a variety of topics and talk about our experiences and opinions on how to build a brand and how to be successful.
There's another side story and lesson learned from my trip to Raleigh North Carolina...
There’s this saying, Be kind, because everyone is fighting a battle you know nothing about. You never know what someone is going through, right? I was reminded how important this is on a recent trip to Raleigh North Carolina.I was in the airport waiting for my flight back to LA as you do and I saw a man, sitting a little ways away in another terminal and waiting like me, look my way and give me the hello nod. You know what mean, right?
He got up and walked over to me — and I’m thinking “okay, do I know this guy?” But he didn’t look familiar. Then he asked, are you Bryan Elliott? With all the enthusiasm my introverted self could muster, I muttered yes, and he proceeded to tell me that he’s a big fan of the podcast and how much it means to him. I was really flattered but also stunned — like a dear in the headlights — because I don’t get approached very much like this. But it was nice.
To be honest, the week prior leading up to this trip I was really struggling with feeling like I’m not doing enough and falling short of some of my goals. But that all disappeared with this man’s simple act of kindness. And since then it’s reminded me about being a bit more grateful about staying focused on things I can control and not on things I cannot. If he’s listening right now I’d like to apologize for being so awkward and thank him for making my day a lot brighter. You were headed from Raleigh Durham to Arizona and the Grand Canyon with your family so I hope you had a great trip.
I’d like to keep meeting more of you. Can we keep this up? If you see me out and about please say hello. One thing you may not know about being a creator — and I’m sure this applies to everything — Whether you’re a creator of music, film, podcast or make a product or service that people use everyday. It’s hard to know exactly who’s paying attention -- or the impact. But when we do meet, it’s an incredible feeling to know that what you’re doing matters a little to someone else.

I really think you’re going to like this one with Cale Owen, CEO of Gym Launch, Prestige Labs, and GymOwners.com. Cale was running his own struggling gym business when he met Alex & Leila Hormozi, founders of Gym Launch. Within a short amount of time, he basically went from gym owner to jumping on board Gym Launch where he was in sales to CEO in about 5 years. Here’s what Alex had to say about Cale.
Now you could say that it may be in Alex’s best interest to support his appointed CEO —but you can’t fake the funk as they say. And Founders don’t always get along with their CEOs nor do they get much time if they don’t perform.
Remember the movie The Founder, starring Michael Keaton — an American biographical drama of businessman Ray Kroc that depicts the founding story of McDonalds? Nick Offerman plays one of the original McDonald brothers and they not only don’t ever see eye-to-eye with Ray Kroc, but Kroc ends up out witting them and pushing them out of the business altogether. The lesson here for me is, If you’re a founder and you find a great CEO who can do the job better than you, get out of the way and take the profits right to the bank.
Cale and I also talked about growing up playing baseball and some possible business lessons from arguably the best hitter in the game, Ted Williams. Williams was obsesses with stats and science of how to optimize his swing and batting average. He labeled the strike zone with ball placement from 200-400. Sure, he could hit a ball that was in the zone a little high and inside but it would only yield a .310 average. What Williams was waiting for was the pitch chest high down the middle that he could hit every time for .400. My conversation with Cale is definitely chalked full of lessons and worth a listen. Here we go!

Joe Kudla, Founder & CEO of San Diego-based activewear brand, Vuori(meaning "mountain" directly translated in Finnish -- and by the brand as an aspirational metaphor for climbing and achieving one's dreams)is at the helm of a $4 billion dollar startup. Founded in 2015, Vuori was created from the notion that men did not have the same, versatile activewear options as their female counterparts – a gap in the quickly growing market that Joe decided to fill. He set out to conceptualize and craft garments made for both movement & everyday life that men would actually want to wear – a vision that gave birth to the Vuori brand.
Throughout the years, Joe has led Vuori to see incredible growth as a brand – becoming profitable in just two years into business (2017, and catalyzed through the brand’s $400 million capital raise in the Fall 2021. Joe and his team have always stuck to the core ethos of the start-up mission they set out to solve in the beginning – creating unparalleled active and everyday wear staples, hinging on technical fabrications, cutting edge silhouettes, and unique innovation concepts, to make a mark on the category unlike any other brand today.
It is this continued vision to create comfortable, style-forward wardrobe staples for men on the move – such as Vuori’s hero Men’s Ponto Performance Jogger, that has quickly propelled additional consumer interest from women. Such interest in the brand from the female consumer quickly led to the conception of a women’s cohort of Vuori in 2018, introducing similar styles for women – marrying performance, fit, functionality, and style for her.Today, Joe and his team support a thriving business that is split equally across genders – delivering on core best sellers and expanding the innovation pipeline year over year. However, growth is not only seen on a DTC basis. Since its start in 2015, Vuori has successfully expanded on an omni channel basis under Joe’s helm – opening stores in nearly 30 cities nationwide and at retailers around the globe, as well as captivating consumers across digital/in-person community building initiatives – such as Vuori’s free online workout streaming service and in-person series – ACTV Club.

Rob Dyrdek is almost unrecognizable now compared to the person he used to be...
Dyrdek has transformed his life and business into a complete optimized machine. Rob says, "Start with the end in mind. Starting is always the hardest part of doing something new. Our nerves usually get the best of us, predicting the possible outcomes of what a new experience will be like."
There's a way to overcome this.
Try setting personal expectations each time you do something new. If you do this consistently, you'll begin to grow and evolve into a state where it becomes more organic to enjoy the process of doing something new.

The truth is I sometimes sleep in my shorts now too — they are that comfortable. I soon discovered that I could build an entire active lifestyle wardrobe to meet the functional needs of my busy job running my Southern California based production company. I wear the fashionable Traverse pants with an open button down shirt or casual sport jacket for pitch meetings and Flex Joggers and a Radius Polo on set when I really need to move around. This interview has millions of views on Youtube but since it was EP #1 when I launched the podcast, let's just say a lot fewer people have listened to this on the audio podcast here. For that reason I'm republishing this classic! Marketing is often a misunderstood concept often viewed as simply creating demand and driving brand awareness. Seth Godin dispels this view by explaining everything you need to know.

Rob Siegel is a lecturer at Stanford University’s Graduate School of Business who specializes in teaching strategy and innovation for both large and small-scale businesses and companies. He is the author of the book The Brains and Brawn Company [https://amzn.to/3bY1CJz] which uses the brain and body as metaphors for ways that companies can be successful holistically.
Siegel has spent time researching the ways in which technology changes things in the business sector and he has explored how companies can integrate digital and physical solutions for their client base and customers. It’s a fascinating career to have but Siegel tells me that he never had an idea that he’d end up here and he found his work by happenstance. “When I was a teenager, I was just a big, fat loser,” he says. “I was just trying to think about how I was going to get beer and try to meet girls. And I didn’t really know what I wanted to do. I entered UC Berkeley as a seventeen-year-old, and my roommate was working for a software company. This was the mid-eighties and I had played with computers, but I didn’t really know software or how it was made. I was thinking about studying engineering and I said, okay I need to make some beer money now that I’m in college and so I ended up going to work for the software company part time and I loved it. I loved technology; I loved the people. I loved the energy.”

Fri, 12 Aug 2022 - 104 - On Running: How a Tiny Swiss Brand Business Took on Nike -- AND WON! | Olivier Bernhard | Podcast series / Marketing
When On Running Co-Founder Olivier Bernhard was a child, running made him feel whole. He had trouble focusing in school and he says that in today’s society he would have probably been given medication to help him focus. Luckily his parents saw the energy he needed to expel and put him into a running club. That changed everything. The experience of moving his body and running gave him a sense of belonging and place and eventually he would grow up to be a pro Swiss athlete.
“I’ve been a runner all my life,” he says. “I would say I’ve had this DNA in me. I started racing
when I was five or six years old, and I enjoyed it. Maybe not so much to climb the podium and
claim a medal. It was more the feeling of running; the breathing and heartbeat...”
Bernhard—a multi-championship Ironman never intended to be at the helm of a disruptor brand, nor did he intend to create a running shoe company. The idea sort of found him when he was looking at ways, not to create new running products but to create a different kind of running experience and feeling.

Fri, 12 Aug 2022 - 103 - Chris Voss | Master the Art of Negotiation in Business and Learn to Win | Podcast series / Marketing
It's 1983 and Chris Voss was hired at the FBI just before his 26th birthday. During his 24 years of service with the Bureau, Voss became a leading international kidnapping negotiator. He regularly engaged with some of the world's most dangerous criminals in extremely high-stakes scenarios. One of the moments that put Chris on the map was the time he successfully negotiated the release of hostages after a 1993 bank robbery at a Chase Manhattan bank in Brooklyn.
I imagine Chris's life a little like a scene from one of my favorite TV shows, The Americans, a period drama about two KGB spies (portrayed by Keri Russell and Matthew Rhys) posing as Americans in suburban Washington, D.C., during the Reagan administration. Voss is currently the founder and head of the Black Swan Group, where he and his team are leveraging his deep knowledge and experience to train businesses and individuals to become highly effective negotiators.
Here are a few things you might learn from Chris during this session:
1. How to decipher your leverage and negotiate from strength [ "The enemy is not the person across the table; the adversary is the situation." ]
In other words, don't make people the enemy--focus instead on the problem to be solved. Negotiation shouldn't be a zero-sum game if you're planning to be in business long-term. So how do we win without burning bridges? The best strategy according to Voss is to "come up with a better deal than both parties could have imagined. You're both faced with different aspects of the same problem. So by definition, you have to look out for the other person to get to the best deal you can get."
2. How to figure out if you're the favorite or the fool...
3. How to use tactical empathy...
While many believe that business is war, Voss sees getting to wins as a collaboration with effort on both sides rooted in empathy. "Aim to magnify positive emotions. To try and take emotions out of negotiation is a fool's errand." So be kind. Be professional. Put yourself in your rival's shoes and figure out a way for you to both be happy.
4. How to use mirroring...
And much more!

Sun, 31 Jul 2022 - 102 - Do Hard Things in Business: The Surprising Science of Real Toughness | Steve Magness
Steve Magness never imagined he’d be a writer —let alone caught in the eye of one of most controversial competitive athletic storms entangled with running brand behemoth Nike, in what could be the biggest scandal since Lance Armstrong. As a track and field athlete in high school, he dreamed of one day being a running coach, or an Olympic athlete. As it happens for so many, life took him on a different path. He is now the author and co-author of many bestselling books including, The Science of Running, The Passion Paradox, Peak Performance and his latest, Do Hard Thingshttp://www.stevemagness.com/do-hard-things
“I wanted to go to the Olympics and be a professional athlete, and that was all I cared about,” he tells me. “I went to school because it was an expectation. I went to college because it allowed me to continue to compete and run. Beyond that, honestly I didn’t have a ton of interests.”
He’s not a competitive runner anymore but today, as I sit down with him to discuss his new book, Do Hard Things,we can’t help but shoot the breeze about running and how it’s really a metaphor for life.
Tue, 19 Jul 2022 - 101 - Alex Hormozi | Listen to This if You Want to Be a Millionaire in Business | Podcast series / Marketing
Do you know the difference between $1 million and $1 billion? It's a lot. If you were to compare the delta in time, a million seconds is about 11 days. However, a billion seconds is almost 32 years. Alex Hormozi, entrepreneur, author, and CEO of Acquisition.com, has a growing portfolio of companies worth upwards of $100 million. Hormozi has a remarkable story that has all the makings of a Hollywood movie. Triumph and tragedy; high stakes business failure and success; complicated family relationships; romance; and more. Hormozi says that by the age of 32, he and his wife Leila's portfolio of companies crossed $85 million per year in revenue spanning brick-and-mortar service, licensing, education, SaaS, and e-commerce. In my opinion, they are on a trajectory to hit the billion-dollar milestone sooner than most.
In his 20s, Hormozi opted to choose his own path and not the one that his successful Iranian immigrant father hoped he'd choose. Many children of immigrants might relate to this story and the subsequent consequence of the choice. Hormozi's decision led to serious conflict and years of tension -- even thoughts of suicide -- between Hormozi and his father that he had to figure out how to heal. In spite of it all, Hormozi remained true to himself and eventually, he hit major success working in the world of fitness and fitness business.
Hormozi tells me that in his youth, everything he did in his life was in pursuit of his father's approval, and that he had never really made decisions for himself and for his own joy. Ultimately, it became clear that he didn't want to live the life that he was living. He says that for a short time he contemplated not living anymore at all, but ultimately decided that risking disappointing his father and carving his own path was a better way out, and so he took that risk. Listen to this wide ranging conversation with $100 million Alex Hormozi -- and you might catch the formula to becoming financially free.

Trigger warning for listeners sensitive to mentions of sexual trauma or violence, this episode contains references to rape and recovery from sexual trauma.
Most teenagers move through the world with a feeling of invincibility. With a few rare exceptions, teens who are still living in the care of their parents and within the family unit home are sheltered from life’s harshest realities. While they might be individuating, preparing for college and the life they’ll live once they leave the nest, it usually takes a major life event to shake a teen out of their childhood bubble and welcome them to the realities of the real world.
For some, this might mean little-t traumas like getting fired from a job, or going through a breakup, but for Carter Barnhart, it was something far more difficult.
When she was just fourteen, Barnhart was out at a concert with friends, and she was raped. One night and just like that her life changed forever. Her innocence and childlike wonder shifted to a place of darkness, loneliness and pain.
Barnhart comes from a strong family, and she is close with her parents and her brother, yet none of them could reach her. She didn’t tell them what happened to her, so on her own she was facing depression, anxiety and passive suicidal ideation.

Thu, 10 Mar 2022 - 96 - Wired to Eat: The Business of Food | Robb Wolf
Wolf believes that all wellness is rooted in sleep, food, movement, and community and that if we can get a handle on those things we will need to see our doctors far less. The onus falls on us, but he’s doing his part to educate and help the masses not only with his books, but also with LMNT Electrolyte supplements.
https://www.behindthebrand.tv/lmnt
His story and his life’s mission is one that I personally vibe with and can relate to. I have had my own moments of experimenting with food and exercise and diet in my own search to deal with chronic headaches and sleep apnea. In my journey, I saw countless doctors who took educated guesses on how to fix what was ailing me, but in the end, I knew intuitively to a degree what was going to work and what was not. Neither Wolf nor I want to disparage doctors in any way. When something goes wrong, having a trusted physician is an incredible advocate to have, but when it comes to overall wellness, there are actions that we as people can take to advocate for ourselves that limit how much medical care we need.

Wed, 16 Feb 2022 - 93 - Daniel Pink | The Power of Regret in Life & Business | Podcast series / Marketing
From the #1 New York Times–bestselling author of When and A Whole New Mind, a paradigm-altering book about the transformative power of our most misunderstood emotion: regret.
“No regrets.” You’ve heard people proclaim it as a philosophy of life. That’s nonsense, even dangerous, says Daniel H. Pink in his latest bold and inspiring work. Everybody has regrets. They’re a fundamental part of our lives. And if we reckon with them in fresh and imaginative ways, we can enlist our regrets to make smarter decisions, perform better at work and school, and deepen our sense of meaning and purpose.

Wed, 16 Feb 2022 - 92 - Behind Marriott Bonvoy's Business of 30+ Brands | President of Luxury at Marriott International,Tina Edmundson | Podcast series / Marketing
I’m excited for you to watch this next episode with Global Brand & Marketing Officer, at Marriott International and the Bonvoy brand, Tina Edmundson.
Please forgive the video quality as we had to do this via zoom but the content is a masterclass in brand marketing for any of you wondering how to build your own brand.
I never considered how much I really valued feeling like I belong [when I travel] until the pandemic locked me in isolation. The distance and separation from family, friends and colleagues was dramatic and I felt it. Travel and connections to new people and places can open our minds to new possibilities and help us remember our humanity. Without hyperbole, travel has been transformative for me. My advice for choosing a place to stay is based on this feeling of being with “your people” whatever that may look like. It might be subtle but the social aspects can make all the difference and even help you bond, heal or create new friendships. This idea reminds me of a theme song from an old 80’s TV show. The lyrics hit me differently now:
“Making your way in the world today takes everything you've got.
Taking a break from all your worries sure would help a lot.
Wouldn't you like to get away?
Sometimes you want to go where everybody knows your name…
And they're always glad you came.
You want to be where you can see, our troubles are all the same.
You want to be where everybody knows your name.
Let’s get into it — Cheers!

Just go to Vimeo.com and see what’s possible!

http://bit.ly/thegoodbrainworkThu, 30 Sep 2021 - 84 - Twitch Co-Founder Justin Kan | Do Anything in Business But Do it Well! | Podcast series / Marketing
As a child Justin Kan’s mother told him that he could do anything in life as long as he did it well, and that laid the foundation for the path he’s been on since his early 20’s. As a child, Kan says that he was inspired by his entrepreneur parents and would tell them that he wanted to be a CEO when he grew up. While his path to get there hasn’t been at all conventional, and for a time included him broadcasting a 24-hour live stream of his own life, the Twitch co-founder seems to have gotten his wish.

Mon, 23 Aug 2021 - 83 - Essentialism: The Disciplined Pursuit of Less in Life & Business | Greg McKeown | Podcast series / Marketing
I think you’re really going to like this episode with bestselling author Greg McKeown. He’s a Brit and seems like a deeply spiritual man with strong convictions for his family and faith.
That is what he credits for a recent health scare with one of his children who had a serious undiagnosed illness but eventually regained her health. Greg talks about the idea of Essentialism, which is not like minimalism where you pair down your belongings to the bare bones… No, Essentialism is about keeping only the things, ideas and beliefs that serve you well. This resonates with me as I’ve shared my story when I felt like a victim 10 years ago during a really dark time in my life. I was able to swap that story and adopt a new one of being a survivor —that was my essential keepsake.
I would also like to thank our sponsor LMNT — and speaking of essentials…it’s a good segue into this amazing drink that’s improved my health in a big way. Some of you know I’ve been battling migraines for a while and my doctor hasn’t found any solutions for me. I’m so sick of taking medicine so I talked to several pro athlete friends and their trainers who told me I was probably missing important electrolytes.
I ordered some LMNT [spelled with the 4 letters LMNT] which as essentials like magnesium, potassium and sodium and over a 30 day period I saw my headaches decrease by about half. I am hooked and so I reached out to the folks at LMNT HQ and we’re now working together to help more of you.
Electrolyte deficiency or imbalances can cause headaches, cramps, fatigue, and weakness. For those FASTING meals or working out for fitness: electrolytes can make the difference between feeling great and feeling like garbage. When you sweat, the primary electrolyte lost is sodium - athletes can lose up to 7 grams per day. When sodium isn’t replaced, it’s common to experience muscle cramps and fatigue. Anyway, I drink one before working out in the morning and one later after dinner to hydrate for the next day.
Want to try a free sample pack? Goto: DrinkLMNT.com/BryanElliott and they will send you all of the flavors to try, shipping is 5 bucks.
My personal favorite is the chocolate because I put it in my protein shake. I also love the Orange Salt. There’s a new watermelon flavor and I’m excited to try it!

http://bit.ly/thegoodbrainworkSat, 17 Apr 2021 - 76 - The Real Magic Happens in Life & Business When You Find the Story Behind the Story | Malcolm Gladwell
In my opinion Malcolm Gladwell is a one-in-generation kind of writer. Like F. Scott Fitzgerald or a more virtuous, thoughtful and gentle Hemingway without all the drinking, cavorting and tragedy. He is Canadian after all, and very proud of it.
In this episode of Behind the Brand I convince Malcolm to reveal something personal about himself that most people do not know about him.
His new book, the Bomber Mafia chronicles the history and rivalry between an elite group of chemists vs physicists who competed during WW2 to see who could help the allied forces, specifically the United States win and end the war against Japan.
Malcolm is a prolific writer and the author of several of my favorite books, including David and Goliath, Outliers, The Tipping Point and many others. He’s also the host of The Revisionist Podcast, which I also recommend checking out. He has an uncanny way of finding the story behind the story and pointing out the important lessons often hiding or undocumented in fascinating true stories in history. I know you’ll enjoy this episode with the incomparable Malcolm Gladwell.

Wed, 07 Apr 2021 - 72 - Lessons of Courage in Life & Business from a Paralympic Medalist | Amy Purdy
Amy Purdy has lived an incredible life. She grew up with the love of Nature, health wellness and travel. She was also a passionate snowboarder. At 19, her life took a detour. After experiencing flu-like symptoms, Amy was rushed to the hospital in a state of septic shock. When she entered into the hospital she was given less than a 2% chance of survival, put on life support and placed into a coma.
After multiple blood transfusions, and the removal of her ruptured spleen, doctors diagnosed Amy with Meningococcal Meningitis, a vaccine preventable bacterial infection. Due to the lack of circulation she had suffered, doctors had to amputate her legs below the knee. She later received a donated kidney from her father a week before her 21st birthday.
After going through this life-altering experience, Amy challenged herself to move on with her life and attain goals that even those who have both legs struggle to achieve. She is one of the top ranked adaptive snowboarders in the world, the 2014 Sochi Paralympic bronze medalist and is currently the only double-leg amputee competing in snowboarding at the world-class level.
Amy’s creativity, positive outlook and her never-give-up attitude have opened doors to many other opportunities, including being featured in a Madonna music video, a lead actress role in an award-winning independent film and multiple creative modeling projects including a photo shoot with musician and artist Nikki Sixx where her legs were custom made from steel to look like ice picks.
Amy has evolved into a powerful inspirational and motivational speaker who has been seen by millions of people and invited to share her story to audiences around the world. Amy’s TED x Orange Coast talk, “Living Beyond Limits” is the number one recommended video by TED x OC to incoming TED speakers formulating their own presentations.
Amy’s story and images have been featured in numerous national and international publications, and in 2012 she and her longtime boyfriend, Daniel Gale, raced around the world on CBS’s The Amazing Race.
In May of 2013, Amy was named by the International Olympic Committee as one of the top 15 most marketable para-athletes in the world.
Although Amy has numerous accomplishments, she is most proud of co-founding Adaptive Action Sports with her husband Daniel Gale. Created in 2005, AAS is a non-profit organization that helps those with permanent disabilities get involved in action sports. AAS has partnered with ESPN and runs “adaptive” action sport competitions at the summer and winter ESPN X Games. These events were instrumental in getting adaptive snowboarding added to the 2014 Paralympic Games.
In the spring of 2014, Amy inspired millions of fans with her stunning performances on ABC’s Dancing With The Stars, eventually becoming the show’s runner-up.
Amy has launched a line of clothing partnership with Element Eden The Amy Purdy Collection” and recently completed her first book New York Times Best Seller “On My Own Two Feet”Amy also recently shared her remarkable story alongside Oprah Winfrey, as part of Oprah’s The Life You Want Tour. Where she toured with Oprah sharing the stage through cities across America.
Amy was also featured in a Superbowl Commercial for her partner Toyota which aired just after kickoff. The commercial fettered Amy Running, Dancing, Snowboarding, modeling and speaking all to the voice of the great Mohammad Ali and his ” How Great I am” speech.

Fri, 17 Apr 2020 - 60 - The Business That Hustle Built | Gary Vaynerchuk | Podcast series / Marketing
What can I say about Gary Vaynerchuk that you haven't already heard. In my mind, Gary is, among many things, a survivor.
He was born in the former Soviet Union and escaped with his parents at a young age to suburban New Jersey where they relocated and started life over from zero.
From his own stories and my own gut sense…to say that life was rough for Gary is probably a HUGE understatement. Gary has the mentality of a street fighter and the mouth of the most rogue pirate — who is unrivaled in his a mastery of swear words.
When you see the fire in his eyes—even now these 40 years later burning just a brightly— it’s not hard to imagine him as a kid with his so-called Jersey friends being exceptionally cruel.
I’m pretty sure Gary was bullied with intensity over many years and without mercy or relief. But instead of giving up, Gary fought back...or at least waited for his moment of revenge—even though it took 30 years to get to that place.
I can picture Gary’s stoic Russian father — working in their new liquor store start up —too busy making ends meet to support or even notice the emotional damage being inflicted on his little son. And a loving mother, who Gary always holds in the highest esteem, trying her best to counter-act Gary’s brutal days at school with healthy doses of praise, positivity and gratitude for living in their new free democracy in pursuit of the American Dream.
On the outside Gary looks like a Chihuahua. But on the inside he has the heart of a lion. He brags about being lousy at school to make a point that school isn’t all it’s cracked up to be—especially when your teachers label you a "loser" who will never amount to much. Gary has been quietly hell-bent on proving them all wrong even since.
Instead of spending a ton of money on college with no ROI, he’d suggest you eat dirt and couch surf for the first seven years while you shadow your work idol and squeeze every bit of wisdom and experience from them before venturing off on your own. Whether you’re 20…30 or 50-something, Gary will remind you that you’ve got to be patient.
BECAUSE.
YOU.
HAVE.
SOOOOOOO.
MUCH.
TIME.
Following Gary’s dogma can sometimes feel like multiple contradictions OR like trying to catch a blown up balloon that’s not tied off, as it whips around thru the air spastically and ultimately lands where you don’t expect it.
I get the sense that we are all witnesses to Gary’s self-awareness transformations in real time. Daily. Sometimes via 50 pieces of content a day.
Gary Vaynerchuk is the CEO of VaynerMedia, a full-service advertising agency servicing Fortune 100 clients. He also owns women’s brand PureWow and men’s lifestyle brand ONE37pm. VaynerSports, that reps pro athletes and 20 other business ventures.
Gary is a very popular and highly paid public speaker commanding over $100k per speech…he’s a 5-time New York Times bestselling author, who has written more books than he has personally read.
He is a prolific angel investor with early investments in companies such as Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, Venmo, and Uber—although he will tell you that he passed on Uber twice—and this probably cost him a billion dollars.
Gary is currently the subject of DailyVee, a
