- 334 - Downey & Martez: Buccaneers disappointing season ends with a dud against Dallas
The season may be over for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, but Trey Downey and Len Martez are still back with a brand new edition of the Downey and Martez podcast. The guys begin this week’s show by discussing Tampa Bay’s embarrassing 31-14 loss to the Dallas Cowboys in the wildcard round of the playoffs. The guys try to zero in on what exactly went wrong. Len echoes quarterback Tom Brady’s post game comments, while Trey highlights one specific stretch that he thought swung the game in Dallas’ favor. Before moving on to the breaking coaching news, the guys discuss Brady’s “goodbye” to the Tampa Bay media. This leads to a debate on whether he is truly done in Tampa. And if he is, does that mean his career is over as well? The conversation then pivots to the news that offensive coordinator Byron Leftwich has been fired. Trey & Len talk about whether the Bucs should’ve made this move during the season and pondered why it wasn’t. The fellas then put the spotlight on Todd Bowles and the fact that all signs point to him returning as Buccaneers head coach. Trey and Len agree that they aren’t surprised by the move but disagree on whether that was the move Tampa Bay front office should’ve made. The duo closes the podcast by looking at the NFL divisional playoff round and letting you know if they expect any upsets. On offense, Len focuses on the running game while Trey says they need explosive plays through the play action passing game. On the defensive side, Trey zeroes in on forcing turnovers while Len says it is all about a certain acronym, PDA. Sat, 14 Jan 2023 - 37min - 332 - Downey & Martez: Big plays lead to another Buccaneers double digit comeback win
It was a long, winding road to get here but the Tampa Bay Buccaneers are NFC South division champions. So Trey Downey and Len Martez are back to discuss the accomplishment on a new edition of Downey and Martez. Trey praises the Buccaneers performance against the Carolina Panthers on Sunday, but Len’s take that it was much of the same leads to a heated debate on just what we saw at Raymond James Stadium this past Sunday. Trey focuses on the explosive plays while Len points out that Tampa Bay still struggled mightily in the running game & had to overcome another fourth quarter double digit deficit. The guys then move onto the ramifications from the game and discuss whether head coach Todd Bowles’ job is now safe for next year. That conversation took a turn towards South Florida & the two discuss Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel’s future in Miami. Trey then poses the question to Len on who Bucs fans should want to face on wildcard weekend. Len explains why the Philadelphia Eagles and Dallas Cowboys are both bad matchups but eventually leans in a certain direction. The guys close the podcast by both expressing their concern and optimism in regards to Buffalo Bills defensive back Damar Hamlin’s scary incident and subsequent recovery. The guys also discuss what the NFL is doing in terms of playoff seeding in the AFC. Mon, 02 Jan 2023 - 06min - 330 - Downey & Martez: Buccaneers comeback overtime win after being down 10 in the desert
Week 17 is here and while it is no longer the final week of the regular season it is the most important one for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. On a brand new edition of Downey and Martez, Trey Downey and Len Martez look ahead to a game that could decide the season against the Carolina Panthers after reacting to the Bucs overtime win against the Arizona Cardinals on Christmas night. Trey is anything but positive about the win and focuses on how the offense looked abysmal until the closing minutes. Downey thinks the defense plays well for the most part with the offense putting them in bad positions, but Martez focuses on the teams struggles to stop the run. On the offensive side of the ball, Trey asks Len if he had any answers to the puzzling situation regarding the lack of targets for wide receiver Mike Evans and his drop in production . Because of the success in the closing minutes of the game, Trey wonders if the Bucs should try to go more up-tempo early in games while Len states "We are way past that point." In looking ahead to Sunday’s showdown at Raymond James Stadium with the Carolina Panthers, Trey says the Bucs just need to sell out to stop the run and force Panthers quarterback Sam Darnold to beat them. Len points out that even if the Bucs sell out to stop the run it isn’t a guarantee that they will win considering what happened in week seven in Charlotte. As far as what will happen on Sunday, Len is done making win-loss predictions with this team while Trey's take is absolutely no result will shock him. Fri, 23 Dec 2022 - 15min - 326 - Second half miscues & turnovers botch Buccaneers lead against Bengals
The holiday season is upon us and Santa has brought you a brand new edition of Downey and Martez. This week the guys look back at the loss to the Cincinnati Bengals and ahead to a Christmas night showdown with the Arizona Cardinals. Trey starts things off by asking Len if he took more from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers great first half against Cincinnati or the absolutely atrocious second half. In regards to that first half, the guys discuss what went right for Tampa Bay. After getting the positives out of the way, the guys move on to the final 30 minutes of the game. The guys explain what the turning point in the game was and agreed it was the botched fake punt. Trey and Len debate what went wrong on that play and if it was actually a fake. The guys also discuss the post game interaction between running back Gio Bernard and various members of the media. Before moving onto discussing this week’s Sunday Night Football game, the guys dig a little deeper on the Bengals and how much of a threat they are to win their conference. In regards to the Christmas night game, Len seems very confident in the Bucs chances so Trey presses him on why. Fri, 23 Dec 2022 - 37min - 325 - Downey & Martez: Buccaneers look to bounce back against visiting Bengals
We have reached week 15 in the NFL and it is time for another new edition of Downey and Martez. After discussing a thrilling win last week, Trey Downey and Len Martez are left discussing an embarrassing loss to the San Francisco 49ers that dropped the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to 6-7. Even though Len told Trey he didn’t think the Bucs had a chance to win last week, Trey starts the podcast by asking Len if he thought it would be that bad. The guys then move on to discussing the nugget that dropped that quarterback Tom Brady holds meetings with the skill players on Saturday nights where he tweaks the game-plan. Trey focuses on the weirdest part being that these tweaks aren’t cleared with the coaching staff and that Head Coach Todd Bowles and offensive coordinator Byron Leftwich find out about them on gameday. The guys then turn their discussion to the coaching staff and have a disagreement in terms of what will save their jobs and have them back with the team next year. With the loss, the guys had to tackle the fact that the division title isn’t a sure thing and discuss whether the Carolina Panthers or the Atlanta Falcons are a bigger threat right now. The guys close the podcast by previewing Sunday's game against the Cincinnati Bengals and debating which injured player who might return would be the biggest shot in the arm for Tampa Bay. Sat, 17 Dec 2022 - 35min - 324 - Downey & Martez: Two Brady touchdowns bring Buccaneers back from the dead
Is it time to drink some pewter and red kool-aid once again? Trey Downey and Len Martez tackle that very question on a brand new edition of the Downey and Martez podcast. Trey starts the podcast by asking Len where the success that the Tampa Bay Buccaneers had on the final two drives was for the majority of the game. Len focuses on one thing, unimaginative play-calling. Trey then asks Len about offensive coordinator Byron Leftwich’s lackluster response to questions about fixing the offense. Trey also asks Len how much of left tackle Donovan Smith’s struggles can be pinned on who has played next to him this year. While Trey says that quarterback Tom Brady turned into “That Dude” in the final minutes, there is one aspect of the future hall of famer’s play that is worrying him. The guys then move on to the upcoming game against the San Francisco 49ers. While Trey points out that it could be a huge game for the Bucs in terms of playoff seeding Len explains why he doesn’t think the result will be different than what he expected before the injury to quarterback Jimmy Garroppolo. The guys close the show by making predictions on who they think will win the Heisman Trophy. Wed, 07 Dec 2022 - 20min - 322 - Downey & Martez::Buccaneers bounce back from Browns loss begins with prime time match-up against division rival
As the NFL season enters December, Trey Downey and Len Martez are back with another new edition of Downey and Martez. On this week’s podcast, the guys look back at the overtime loss to the Cleveland Browns. That loss finally brings Trey to the realization that the Tampa Bay Buccaneers are who Len has been saying they are for the majority of the season, a mediocre football team. In looking back at the loss, Len focuses on the Bucs lack of a running game against a horrible Browns run defense while Trey focuses on the coaching and lack of clock management at the end of the game. While Len says he doesn't necessarily buy Head Coach Todd Bowles' excuse that he was worried about an interception thrown by quarterback Tom Brady, Trey says it might be even worse if it was just a lapse of judgment. The decision and subsequent excuse leaves Trey wondering if Bowles is meant to be a head coach in the NFL. Trey asks Len whether he thought Bowles could possibly be one and done as the Bucs head coach. The guys agree that one & done is definitely possible should the Bucs miss the playoffs and the guys also agrees that 9-8 is probably the absolute ceiling for this team at this point. Before closing the podcast, Trey asks Len what the keys will be in a Monday Night Football battle against the New Orleans Saints. The guys also discuss the recent report whether or not Brady could be returning to the New England Patriots in 2023 is a real possibility. Sat, 03 Dec 2022 - 36min - 321 - Downey & Martez:: With bye over Buccaneers head to "Dog Pound" to take on the Browns
It is time for a special holiday week edition of the Bucs Nation Podcast as Trey Downey and Len Martez look back at the Tampa Bay Buccaneers win over Seattle and ahead to their Thanksgiving weekend game against the Cleveland Browns. Trey starts the podcast by asking Len if he’s more confident in the Bucs chances in the NFC after their win over the Seahawks and the inconsistency that is being shown by the top teams in the conference. Len agrees that the win in Germany was a step in the right direction but adds that Tampa still needs to prove that they are that team on a regular basis. The guys then heaps praise on linebacker Devin White after another great game in the midst of difficult circumstances. The conversation then turns into a debate on whether rookie running back Rachaad White has unseated veteran Leonard Fournette as the starting running back on this football team. Before looking ahead to the future the guys examine the Bucs laughable attempt at a trick play from all angles. The guys close the podcast by looking ahead to the game against the Browns and Trey tells you why this game is still a dangerous one and one that is very important for the Bucs status in the NFC moving forward. Wed, 23 Nov 2022 - 33min - 320 - Downey & Martez: Losing streak over Buccaneers set sights on Seahawks in Germany
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are back to their winning ways and Trey Downey and Len Martez are back to discuss it all on a new edition of Downey and Martez. Trey begin the podcast by asking Len if we will end up looking at the game-winning drive against the Rams as the one that saved the Bucs season. Len doesn't hop on that positive train. He states it was good that the Bucs won but points out just how bad of a team the Rams are. Trey praises the defensive performances of linebacker Devin White and defensive tackle Vita Vea while Len brings up the sobering reality of how long it has been since Tampa Bay defense has forced a turnover. The talk then turns to the offensive side of the ball and the continued struggles of the running game. The conversation centers around running back Leonard Fournette and Len points out that it is time to start putting some of the blame on Fournette along with the offensive line and play-calling. In response to that Trey asks Len if he thinks we will continue to see more of running back Rachaad White and less of Lenny as the season rolls along. Before continuing on to this weekend’s game, Trey heaps praise on rookie tight end Cade Otton and asks if he was the best off-season acquisition that the Bucs made. The podcast moves on to the NFL international series game against the Seattle Seahawks. Trey focuses on the implications of this game in terms of playoff seeding and how much momentum it could bring the Bucs. Len focuses on the fact that the confidence of the Bucs needs to continue to rise and they still have a long way to go before becoming a true playoff threat. The guys close the podcast by discussing the reports that former Buccaneers head coach Jon Gruden is on the list of candidates for the recently opened USF Bulls head coaching job. Sat, 12 Nov 2022 - 38min - 319 - Downey & Martez: Buccaneers regrouping begins with rematch against the Rams
Week 9 is already here in the NFL which means Trey Downey and Len Martez are back with another new edition of Downey & Martez. The guys unfortunately start the show by discussing the Buccaneers loss to the Baltimore Ravens on Thursday Night Football. Before getting to all of the negative from that football game Trey asks Len a simple question. Did the Bucs play better in that game than in their previous two losses to the Carolina Panthers and Pittsburgh Steelers. Once the one item of positive news gets out of the way, the guys move on to a discussion about linebacker Devin White, a player who has been under a microscope. The guys discuss White’s rough night, what seemed like a lack of effort and his decision to initially not speak to the media this week. Trey also poses the question to Len on whether White is still one of the best linebackers in the league. Len then turns to what he perceives as a lack of leadership in the Bucs locker room and Trey brings up a defensive player that he’d like to see step up and be more vocal amidst the struggles. Trey and Len then touch on another rough offensive performance and wonder if it is still blasphemy to think that quarterback Tom Brady has finally crossed into the threshold of being old. Len then tells you why he thinks we will see a lot of mediocre football against the Los Angeles Rams on Sunday. The guys close the podcast by discussing Tampa’s decision to stand pat at the trade deadline and debate which trade around the league will have the biggest impact on the 2022 season. Mon, 31 Oct 2022 - 14min - 316 - Downey & Martez: Brady & Buccaneers under .500 with Baltimore coming to Tampa
After another disheartening loss for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Trey Downey and Len Martez are back to digest what happened this past Sunday in Carolina on a new edition of Downey and Martez. Trey and Len begin the show with the start of the game and wide receiver Mike Evans dropping what would’ve been a 64-yard touchdown. The guys discuss how the game could’ve been different if Evans caught the pass and his post-game comments about how it changed the team’s confidence. Trey then focuses on why he thinks this team could turn things around if the red-zone offense struggles are fixed while Len stated that would be great but the Buccaneers would still have issues because of their run defense. The conversation then turns to coaching and the guys discuss how much this team is missing former head coach Bruce Arians. Trey even poses the question on whether or not there is a scenario where Arians returns to the coaching staff in any kind of official capacity. That question jumpstarts another topic and whether or not offensive coordinator Byron Leftwich makes it through the season. Trey laments that if the Bucs were to make that move it would have to come in the next few weeks. Trey closes the show by trying to be positive and asking if the Bucs are still the favorites to win the NFC South. It is time for another fresh edition of the Downey and Martez podcast. On this week’s show Trey Downey and Len Martez look back at the Buccaneers embarrassing loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers and look ahead to a divisional match-up against the Carolina Panthers. Trey start the podcast by listing all of the issues that the Bucs had against the Steelers. Len focus during the the start of the podcast is on the defensive side of the ball and the late 3rd down conversions the Buccaneers defense gave up. Trey agrees that those were concerning, but he presses Len on if he’s actually more worried about the Bucs defense right now. The guys get a little more specific on the offensive side of the ball and discuss left guard Luke Goedeke’s growing pains, offensive coordinator Byron Leftwich’s stubbornness when it comes to running the ball and wide receiver Mike Evans' lack of targets. With all of that negativity out of the way the guys then take a look on the bright side. The Bucs play the 1-5 Panthers on Sunday. The gents looks at the recent fire sale going on in Carolina and discuss if running back Christian McCaffrey trade to San Francisco makes the 49ers a true contender. In discussing the future of the Panthers the guys get into a heated debate on whether or not the currently retired Sean Payton would come out of retirement for their head coaching job. Trey then asks Len what the consequences might be if the Bucs fell to 3-4 on Sunday and were beaten by a team led by quarterback PJ Walker. Finally, the guys close the show by looking at the headlines around the league and discussing two surprise teams in the NFL and which one is less fraudulent. Mon, 17 Oct 2022 - 15min - 312 - Downey & Martez: Pickett & Pittsburgh next up for the Buccaneers
Week 6 in the NFL is already upon us and that means it is time for your weekly dose of the Downey and Martez podcast. Trey and Len begin this week’s show by looking back at the 21-15 victory over the Atlanta Falcons. Trey asks Len if the game ultimately being that close was worrisome. Len explains why the result itself wasn’t necessarily worrisome, but the Buccaneers struggles against the run and Devin White’s postgame comments raised some eyebrows. Trey then moves on to some positives and praises running back Leonard Fournette’s 10-catch performance and just how quickly rookie running back Rachaad White is developing into a more than competent pass blocker. The conversation then shifts to the roughing the passer call on Falcons defensive tackle Grady Jarrett that ended up having a big impact on the game. Trey and Len don't spend too much time debating how egregious the call was because that was obvious. The guys dig into the reaction to the call and the fact that a lot of Bucs fans tried to justify it by pointing out pass interference not being called on Scotty Miller. Trey and Len then shift gears to the action on the field in Week Six. The guys discuss the injuries that both teams are dealing with in the secondary and Trey tells you why he loves a certain bet you can place on the Bucs this weekend. Before closing the show the guys look at the two marquee matchups in Week Six and Trey asks Len if there’s anything the league can do to fix Thursday Night Football. Week Five in the National Football League is here and it is time for another brand new edition of Downey and Martez. Trey Downey and Len Martez begin this week’s show by recapping what happened on Sunday night football against the Kansas City Chiefs. Trey and Len agree that this was the worst performance by the Buccaneers defense in a very long time. The guys dig deeper and talk about the struggles against the run and ponder whether Jason Licht should be giving Ndamukong Suh a call. After a heated discussion on the last episode about Bucs offensive coordinator Byron Leftwich’s play-calling, Trey asks Len about his level of concern after a performance that netted just three rushing yards against the Chiefs. Len gives you an interesting response to why Leftwich has been calling the games the way he has been. After discussing the offensive play-calling, the conversation turns to this Sunday’s game against the Atlanta Falcons. Trey asks Len how surprised he is that the game is for first place in the NFC South at this point in the season. The guys also discuss two weapons that Tampa Bay fans should be worried about even with the injury to Falcons offensive weapon Cordarelle Patterson. Trey then explains why he thinks Bucs fans that are concerned about the team's play should be stepping away from the panic button. The guys close the podcast by discussing who the best team in the league is a month into the season. It is time for another jam-packed edition of Downey and Martez. Trey Downey and Len Martez begin by looking back at the Buccaneers week two win over the New Orleans Saints. The guys praise yet another stifling performance by the Bucs defense and Len gives praise to two defensive backs that have become ballhawks. The discussion on the podcast turns to the struggles that Tampa Bay once again had on the offensive side of the ball. This leads to a heated debate on offensive coordinator Byron Leftwich’s play calling & if the Bucs are relying on the run game too much. After giving their thoughts about the Buccaneers offense, Trey & Len jump to the latest chapter in the Mike Evans and Marshon Lattimore feud. While many Bucs fans have been praising Evans’ actions, the guys both agree because of the consequences, the all=pro wide receiver has to know better . Downey & Martez then move onto linebacker Devin White’s postgame comments on former Buccaneers quarterback Jameis Winston & have another debate, this time on whether White's comments were fair or foul. Before wrapping up the podcast, Trey explains why he thinks this week’s home opener against the Green Bay Packers could be another low scoring affair and Len tells you why this week’s game is even more important for the surprise team down in South Florida. Fri, 23 Sep 2022 - 38min - 308 - Downey & Martez: Bucs heading down to the "Big Easy' after their week one win
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are 1-0 and head to New Orleans this week. And Trey Downey and Len Martez are back with a new episode of Downey and Martez to discuss it all. The guys begin the show by discussing the good, bad, and ugly from the 19-3 win over the Cowboys. The guys agree that if there was any ugly, it was the fact that Tampa Bay are dealing with more injuries. The gents discuss the injuries to offensive tackle Donovan Smith & three wide receivers, Julio Jones, Mike Evans & Chris Godwin & how the injuries could impact the team moving forward depending on how much time they may miss. From the ugly, Trey & Len discuss the bad which was the offense stalling in Cowboys' territory. The guys save the best for last & that was the good. That part of the conversations begins with the stifling performance of the defense. Trey and Len then agree how impressive Jones looked and how he was used in the offense.. Trey then gives some credit to Len for being right on how many touches running back Leonard Fournette got in week one. After the breaking down week one, the discussion moves to the Bucs week two matchup. Len explains why he expects the Bucs to have a similar, run-heavy game-plan against the Saints, while Trey mentions how the Saints attack the Tampa Bay offense depends on if Evans and Jones are able to suit up in New Orleans. Trey then explains why the Saints need to have a much better start than they did in week one against the Atlanta Falcons if they want to keep their regular season winning streak against the Bucs going. The podcast closes with a conversation about other results in week one & what matchups they're looking forward to this coming week. Fri, 16 Sep 2022 - 38min - 307 - Downey & Martez: Bucs & Brady gearing up for Week One in Dallas
The regular season is here and it is time to preview games that matter on a new edition of Downey and Martez. Before getting into the Sunday Night Football game against Dallas, Trey Downey and Len Martez tackle some of the news items of the week. First off Len expresses why all of the smoke around a Rob Gronkowski return isn’t news until he gives some kind of indication that he wants to play. The guys then discuss Buccaneers wide receiver Chris Godwin being a full participant in practice on Wednesday and Trey asks Len for a gut feeling on whether Godwin will suit up against the Cowboys. Trey then tries to get some credit on running back Rachaad White moving up to the 2nd slot on the depth chart, but Len's response is to wait until Sunday night. The conversations then zeroes in on Sunday night. Len tells us why he thinks running back Leonard Fournette could see quite a few touches and Trey looks into why he thinks Dallas getting exotic with blitz packages could be their key to victory. Finally the guys revisit their playoff predictions from last week and explain who they think will be playing for the Lombardi Trophy in February. While the guys agree on the team coming out of the AFC, there's a difference of opinion on the NFC. Thu, 08 Sep 2022 - 30min - 306 - Downey & Martez: Bucs focus moves from final 53 to the start of regular season
The initial 53 man roster is set for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Trey Downey and Len Martez are back to discuss it with you on a new edition of Downey and Martez. Trey and Len start the show by talking about the shocking move of the Bucs cutting wide receiver Tyler Johnson. Len explains why his issue wasn’t that Tampa Bay cut Johnson, but the reason given why he was cut. Trey brings up that he thinks quarterback Tom Brady’s absence might have worked against Johnson. The guys then discuss Brady’s preseason debut against the Indianapolis Colts and his comments to the media after the game. Len reiterates why he still isn’t worried about "That Dude" being distracted on the field. Finally the guys share their NFL season predictions. While the division winners in both conferences seems to be common ground for Trey and Len, a healthy bit of disagreement takes place when the discussion turns to wildcard team predictions. Trey and Len move onto to one of the most talked about players of training camp, wide receiver Scotty Miller. Trey put Len on the spot by asking him if Miller would ultimately make the 53 man roster. The guys end the podcast by debating the final 2 starting quarterback battles in the NFL. The first Buccaneers preseason game of the season is in the books and Trey Downey and Len Martez are back on a new episode of Downey & Martez to break it all down for you. The guys began the show by breaking down the most recent roster moves. Len told you why he wasn’t really surprised by the Bucs cutting cornerback Ross Cockrell. Trey then told you why he thinks outside linebacker Carl Nassib might be the perfect signing to make up for the loss of Cam Gill. The guys then moved on to the performance of quarterback Kyle Trask. Len explained why grading his performance goes much deeper than just looking at the stats that he put up. Trey then illustrated how kicker Jose Borregales not only missed a kick, but might’ve missed his only opportunity to unseat Ryan Succop for the starting kicker job. The conversation then turned to players that the guys felt needed to be discussed because of their big nights. Trey and Len agreed on a couple of wide receivers and one defender that continues to impress. The show closed with a debate on whether the starting offense will see action in the preseason with the news that Chris Godwin participated in the team period of practice on Tuesday. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers wrapped up another week of training camp and once again there were no shortage of storylines for Trey Downey and Len Martez to get to on a new edition of Downey and Martez. The show began once again with a conversation about quarterback Tom Brady. The guys discussed the news that “That Dude” will be away from the team until after the second preseason game against the Tennessee Titans. Trey and Len broke down how the absence impacts the Bucs moving forward. The discussion stayed on quarterbacks, but this time the guys were talking Kyle Trask. Trey asked Len for his first hand take on how the second year quarterback has looked in practice after all of the negativity that has been on social media. There was then a rare moment of agreement between Trey and Len in terms of the amount of playing time Trask should get in the preseason. Finally, the guys discussed if there were any surprises on the Bucs initial depth chart and provided a few names of players they’ll have their eyes on Saturday night at Raymond James Stadium. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are a full week into their 2022 training camp. And that means Trey Downey and Len Martez have a fresh edition of Downey and Martez to get you through your weekend. Trey and Len then talked about some of the position battles including how Robert Hainsey has been doing in terms of filling Ryan Jensen’s shoes. The guys also discussed how Tyler Johnson was preforming so far in camp and how the young receiver’s willingness to play special teams might be how he makes the team. It was then time for Len to take his mulligan as he did a complete 360 on one rookie after seeing him in action at camp. The guys then closed the show by discussing the ongoing situation surrounding Deshaun Watson and just how many games he will be suspended. The guys discussed whether the Bucs might go out and get a veteran center or if Robert Hainsey would take over the starting job if Jensen misses extended time. The conversation then turned to the signing of Julio Jones. Trey and Len agreed that his redzone presence is probably the biggest benefit to signing the vet. Trey questioned though whether signing Jones is worth having to cut one of the Bucs younger options. The final edition of our NFC South team previews is on tap on this week’s edition of Downey and Martez. Trey and Len kicked the tires on the report by Jeremy Fowler of ESPN that former Minnesota Vikings and New York Giants tight end Kyle Rudolph is drawing interest from the Bucs. The guys then moved on to the Saints. The first topic was how this team might look different in the post Sean Payton era with Dennis Allen as their new head coach. After discussing the additions of safety Tyrann Matthieu, wide receivers Jarvis Landry and rookie Chris Olave, Trey and Len then discussed what to expect from former Bucs quarterback Jameis Winston without Payton. Let’s just say that there was a disagreement in terms of what to expect from Winston, who saw his season end last year when he suffered a knee injury against his former team in week seven. It is time for a big, brand new episode of Downey and Martez. This week’s main topic was obviously Rob Gronkowski’s retirement and the guys discussed it from all angles. Trey started off by asking Len how surprised he was when the announcement came out. The conversation then went on to whether this is permanent or if Gronk could come back at some point during the season. Trey and Len also looked at what his legacy is and if he will go down as the greatest tight end to ever play in the NFL. The gents then moved onto the implications for the Buccaneers. Names like Jared Cook and Kyle Rudolph were discussed as replacements, but Trey voiced why he thinks Tampa Bay can just go into the season with what they already have. Another week is in the books which means it is time for another edition of Downey and Martez. After that the guys move on to two positions that are still up in the air for the Bucs, tight end and defensive tackle. While the guys both aren’t too optimistic about the Buccaneers advancing to the NFC championship, they both illustrated how Tampa Bay might get past Los Angeles. The guys closed out the show by discussing the remaining 3 games of the divisional round. The guys agreed on the NFC, but their AFC championship predictions were a completely different story. Fri, 14 Jan 2022 - 08min - 245 - Downey & Martez: Bucs Playoff Run Begins With Wildcard Weekend
Trey Downey and Len Martez are back with you for a wildcard weekend edition of the Bucs Nation podcast. The guys focused on the match-up with the Eagles to start the podcast. The main question was how similar this match-up will look to Tampa Bay’s 28-22 victory from earlier this season. Trey then asked Len if the return of Lavonte David or Leonard Fournette is bigger for the Buccaneers. The guys also discussed the possible return of Miles Sanders and what that could mean to Philly. The guys then pivoted to the remaining 5 games and Len told you why he thinks there will be multiple road teams scoring upsets. Trey then explained why he thinks there is a dark horse team that will end up in the AFC championship game. Trey and Len then turned away from the games and looked at the head coaching openings. Trey and Len surprisingly agreed on what the best opening is, but disagreed on who might end up with that job. The guys also discussed if Brian Flores will immediately get another job and whether the Bucs coordinators will be head coaches at the start of the next season. The guys then looked at the long-term impact of Brown’s exit on the Bucs and pondered whether Tampa Bay can make another Super Bowl run with Cyril Grayson as their number 2 wide receiver. The conversation then turned to the playoffs and Trey asked Len if Bucs fans should be hoping to face the Eagles or the Niners on Wildcard Weekend. The conversation then turned to the AFC as the guys gave their predictions on who will get the last two wildcard spots in that conference. Before closing up shop the gents looked ahead to Monday. They started with discussing which teams will be looking for new coaches and ended with their predictions for the College Football Playoff National Championship Game.
