Cofounder of Renaissance Periodization, Dr. Mike Israetel holds a PhD in Sport Physiology from East Tennessee State University. Currently a professor in the Strength and Hypertrophy Master’s program at Lehman College, Mike has taught several courses at multiple universities, including Nutrition for Public Health, Advanced Sports Nutrition and Exercise, and Nutrition and Behavior. Originally from Moscow, Russia, he has worked as a consultant on sports nutrition to the U.S. Olympic Training Site in Johnson City, TN, and has been an invited speaker at numerous scientific and performance/health conferences worldwide, including nutritional seminars at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Lake Placid, NY. Mike has coached numerous athletes and busy professionals in both diet and weight training, and is himself a competitive bodybuilder and professional Brazilian Jiu Jitsu grappler.

In Episode 157, we are fortunate to get some time speaking with Matt Wenning. Although Matt has tremendous experience in the sport of powerlifting and the physical preparation of athletes, he also has extensive experience in the restoration, repair and engineering of motor vehicles. We talk about his current automotive projects, as well as how he translates those skills and concepts to strength training. The details of Matt’s education and career development are inspiring, as well as his focus and discipline around becoming a better athlete and coach.
Matt Wenning is a three-time world champion powerlifter. He holds a Master’s Degree in Biomechanics and a Bachelor of Science in Exercise Science from Ball State University. Matt grew up in Indiana, raised by a hard-working, middle class family. When he was six years old, Matt was hit by a car going 50 mph, which took a toll on his physical development. After undergoing 12 months of full leg casts and 12 months in a boot, his legs were underdeveloped. Four years later, Matt discovered lifting. It allowed him to see he was capable of anything, despite what he had gone through during recovery from his injuries. In the beginning, lifting was just a stepping stone to the goal of football. But it became a much larger pathway in his life. Lifting inspired Matt to attain higher education and become a strength coach. He excelled with a 3.9 GPA.
Matt has been an adviser for the NFL, an international speaker for the NSCA, as well as a contractor for border patrol, airborne divisions, and the pentagon. He has directed over 6000 troops in strength, conditioning, and wellness for the U.S. Army including Infantry and Ranger Divisions.

In Episode 154, we talk with Jacqueline Kasen about her incredible pursuit of climbing the world’s highest mountains. We learn about her comprehensive fitness preparation for such an adventure, but also some of the setbacks she has endured as part of such a lofty goal. Jacqueline discusses all of the challenges she has faced with these types of expeditions including the thin air at altitude, the unforgiving weather, the lack of showers and other conveniences, team cohesion and the ever present danger of accidents. She recounts one case of a fellow climber from her team experiencing a traumatic accident and how she has dealt with it personally in order to maintain a positive attitude towards future climbs, as well as a different perspective on life.
Jacqueline Kasen has been immersed in the fitness world since her youth. From participating in the Junior Olympics to excelling as a collegiate athlete and now as a Director of Group Fitness for Anatomy, Certified Personal Trainer, and Exercise Specialist. Her passion is to help people become something greater than themselves, and that passion has driven her to become a die-hard professional in the Health and Fitness arena. Jacqueline obtained her B.S in Exercise Science with a minor in Health from Plymouth State University. She has since dedicated herself to further her studies by specializing in a number of areas including: Certified Personal Trainer by the National Federation of Personal Training (NFPT), RTS, ONNIT Academy- Foundations, Durability, Steel Mace, and Steel Club, Pre and Post Natal, Functional Movement Screen (FMS), Self Myofascial Release (SMR), ViPR, TRX, Kettlebell Concepts, Animal Flow, Crossfit Mobility WOD, PRP, USAW, Loaded Movement, and Triggerpoint Therapy. Episode 150, we get the opportunity to interview Dr. Ricardo Komotar in between his numerous appointments. Ricardo tells us that he always wanted to be a brain surgeon from a very early age. The brain has always fascinated him. He explains that assessments and imaging can be useful in identifying potential problems in the brain, but too much screening can also be problematic. We also discuss various risk factors for tumor formation in the brain, with an emphasis on the role of nutrition, exercise and sleep for optimal brain function, health and longevity. The conversation also touches on the topics of traumatic brain injuries, dementia and new developments in the field of neurology.
Dr. Komotar is Professor of Neurological Surgery at the University of Miami School of Medicine. He graduated summa cum laude with a B.S. in neuroscience from Duke University, spending a year at Oxford University in England to focus on neuropharmacology. He received his medical degree from The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine with highest honors and completed his internship and neurosurgical residency at Columbia University Medical Center/The Neurological Institute of New York, followed by a surgical neurooncology fellowship at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center to specialize in brain tumors.
As Director of the University of Miami Brain Tumor Initiative, Director of Surgical Neurooncology at the University of Miami, Director of the UM Neurosurgery Residency Program, and Director of the UM Surgical Neurooncology Fellowship Program, Dr. Komotar’s main clinical interests are surgical and radiosurgical (Gamma Knife) treatment of primary and metastatic brain tumors, as well as meningiomas and pituitary lesions. Dr. Komotar is an internationally recognized leader in the field of brain tumors and performs nearly 800 procedures for these conditions each year using advanced cutting-edge surgical/radiosurgical techniques, making him one of the highest volume brain tumor surgeons in the world.

In Episode 146, Don and Derek have a serious talk about how their training has evolved as they have aged, particularly as it relates to weightlifting and resistance training. Younger athletes and individuals are able to lift heavy weight more frequently for many reasons. Not only do they tend to have more time available to dedicate to exercise, they also have more supple and resilient bodies that can handle just about any training load and intensity.
As you age, you find that you have to be more careful about both exercise selection, but also how much and how often you place a load on your body. While many of us have been brought up in a culture of lifting free weights with barbells and dumbbells, there are good reasons for shifting your exercise selection to alternative methods of training muscle and building hypertrophy. We discuss use of weight machines, banded exercises, plyometrics, throws and explosive running activities. Many of these alternative methods of training can provide the same benefits without the same wear-and-tear on the body as traditional weightlifting. Understanding how to choose the right exercises for the right time of your life can have a beneficial effect on your overall health and wellness in later life.

In Episode 145, we are fortunate to be joined once again by John Callery, who has since retired from the DEA and is now working in the field of school safety. John is the Director of School Safety Operations for Surefox North America and will be presenting at an upcoming International School Safety Institute Symposium on April 19-20, 2023 in Las Vegas, Nevada. In our interview with John, he discusses all of the major steps required to make our schools safer. This includes comprehensive education initiatives for all key stakeholders, site evaluations using Hazardous Vulnerability Assessments, and a review of digital leakages to ensure that all potential threats via social media platforms have been monitored to determine possible offenders. John maintains that school shootings are a problem that is not isolated to any one socio-economic group or geographic location and that everyone needs to take measures to prevent them from occurring.
Mr. John W. Callery has over 35 years of law enforcement experience and began his law enforcement career in 1984 as a Police Officer in the United States Air Force (USAF) for six years. For four of those years, he was detailed to the prestigious USAF Presidential Honor Guard at Bolling AFB, Washington, D.C., serving then President Ronald Reagan. Mr. Callery continued his law enforcement career as a Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) Special Agent in 1992, initially assigned to the DEA Los Angeles Field Division (LAFD). Mr. Callery received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Public Administration from the University of Maryland and a Master’s of Science in Counterterrorism-WMD from the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) in 2007. He also holds a Master Certificate in Conflict Management from the University of Notre Dame’s Mendoza School of Business. More recently, as the Special Agent in Charge (SAC) of the San Diego Field Division (SDFD), John led the men and woman of the SDFD in concentrating on the opioid overdose death investigations, fentanyl laced drugs, Mexican Cartel operations and the enduring scourge of methamphetamine trafficking in the region.
Mr. Callery is a professional public speaker and has conducted hundreds of lectures around the world on a myriad law enforcement and counter terrorism topics. Between 2005-2011 Mr. Callery conducted over 70 DEA International Training seminars on professional law enforcement best practices in over 50 nations around the globe.

In Episode 144, Don and Derek begin their visit by discussing the recent medical incident that occurred in the NFL with the Buffalo Bills player, Damar Hamlin. Hamlin went into cardiac arrest immediately after making a tackle and had to be resuscitated by medical staff using CPR and an Automated External Defibrillator (AED). Fortunately, Hamlin has made a fabulous recovery from the event and is gradually returning to normal life. However, it does lead into a greater discussion of the health and welfare of professional athletes, who are being paid to provide a service to an organization.
Should the owners of professional sports teams monitor the activities of paid athletes on an ongoing basis to not only ensure that performance is maintained, but also the health and safety of athletes is maximized? If an owner is paying over $100 million for a player’s contract, does that give them a right to restrict harmful activities away from the training facility and competition arena, as well as promote positive choices for that athlete? These are all pertinent questions in this age of high-speed, high risk and high stakes pro sport.

While many in the field treat symptoms in a reactive manner, Dr. Nick is adamant that a large proportion of these medical issues could be resolved with appropriate preventative measures related to diet and exercise. Dr. Nick has taken the necessary steps to ensure that all of his patients have the best combination of dietary, exercise and wellness prescriptions, combined with his medical expertise to set themselves up with best chance at healthy outcomes.
Dr. Nick Nwabueze is a board-certified Family Medicine physician. He completed medical school at the Ohio State University College of Medicine and finished his internship and residency at Adventist Hinsdale Hospital in Illinois. Dr. Nwabueze is passionate about learning more about how diet and movement affects overall health. He recently started his nutrition coach certification through Precision Nutrition. He also has personal experience with several dietary guidelines including eating paleo, keto, intermittent fasting (16/8, 20/4, and 23/1 fasting/eating windows), and Whole30. Dr. Nick has been a part of the CrossFit community since 2011 and holds a CrossFit Level 1 Trainer Certificate which he uses to coach classes in his spare time. He also has a background in martial arts (black belt in TaeKwonDo and training in judo, jujitsu, and Krav Maga).

Coach Morris tells us about this passion for his role as a strength coach, helping to develop athletes, motivate individuals and change attitudes on a daily basis. Tom also spends some of his time speaking to groups about facing life’s challenges and unexpected adversity, motivating them to meet things head on and with the same intensity and determination that elite athletes bring to training and competition. Coach Morris’ story is a compelling one and he does a fantastic job of bringing positivity wherever he goes.
Thomas Morris serves as the Assistant Athletic Director for Athletic Performance. Morris works with the men's soccer team. During his tenure, he has also served as strength and conditioning coach for the track and field, men's tennis and diving teams. Morris has developed and implemented sport specific strength, conditioning, flexibility, speed and agility programs for Indiana's 24 men's and women's NCAA Division I programs. Prior to his arrival in Bloomington, Morris served as the head speed, strength and conditioning coach at LaSalle University from October of 2004 to June of 2005. At LaSalle, Morris developed and implemented year-round strength and conditioning programs for 12 varsity sports, including football, men's basketball and women's basketball. Morris served as a graduate assistant strength coach at Penn State before his stint at LaSalle, completing requirements for a master's degree in education and health education in the fall of 2006. While at Penn State, Morris worked primarily with the football team.

In Episode 134, we sit down with Merle Liivand to talk about her recent world record swimming 26.2 miles with a silicone mono-fin in the ocean just off the coast of Miami. An amazing feat covered in just over 11 hours, we discuss the physical demands of such a long swim, but also the psychological strength needed to swim through currents, jellyfish, pollution and other sea creatures. She accepted the challenge in an effort to continue to raise awareness about the importance of clean oceans, spreading the word with the help of the Guinness World Records organization. Finding out that Merle could not use her arms over the 11 hours swim was a shocking revelation. Her career as a competitive swimmer started as a child and she continued to swim longer and longer distances, progressing to open water challenges and even ice swimming.

Brandon Marcello is a high-performance strategists that offers consulting services to some of the top organizations in the world that rely on the optimization of human performance capabilities. Originally from Sarasota, FL, Marcello has worked in the professional, Olympic and top collegiate settings. He has also served as a consultant to various organizations and media groups. For the last 22 years, Dr. Marcello has taken individuals and organizations to the next level through multi-year and time-limited human performance consulting projects in the United States and abroad. His work in conjunction with Draper Laboratories for the U.S. Special Forces has provided a deep, multivariate understanding of the drivers of performance in the battlefield, while projects for professional teams and elite athletes includes performance solutions for nutrition, training, recovery, and high-performance team development. Prior to this, Marcello served as the Director of Sports Performance at Stanford University. Brandon was also heavily involved with the development of EXOS, a world-class training facility for professional and elite athletes, as well as the International Performance Institute (IPI) of the IMG Academies in Bradenton, Florida. Marcello holds a PhD in sports nutrition from Baylor University, and a MS and BS in Exercise Science from Marshall University.

Shane completed his BS in Health Science magna cum laude from Campbell University in 2019, is involved in various leadership positions as a medical student, and is passionate about helping highly-qualified veterans transition into the medical field. Episode 122 is our 2022 Winter Olympic warm-up session with the help of legendary speed skating sensation, Shani Davis. Known for his domination of the 1000m and 1500m events in long track speed skating for over a decade, Shani updates us on his work as a coach and mentor to many up and coming speed skating athletes. He outlines his career in speed skating, staring at a young age with roller skating and inline skating. He quickly moved up the ranks to the elite levels in both short-track and long-track speed skating. Shani talks about what it takes to prepare for and compete at the Olympic level and also hints at what he expects to see in the sport at the 2022 Olympics in Beijing, China.
Shani Davis is a multi-gold and silver medallist at the Winter Olympics, capturing gold in the 1000m event at the 2006 and 2010 Olympic Games, while also winning the silver medal in the 1500m event at both Olympics. He was the first African-American athlete to win a gold medal at an individual event at the Winter Olympic Games. Davis has also won the World Allround Speed Skating Championships in 2005 and 2006, as well as capturing the World Sprint Championships in 2009, becoming the second male skater to win both the Sprint and Allround titles behind Eric Heiden. He also has multiple single event World Championship titles as well as having set a total of nine world records throughout his career. Although Davis grew up in Chicago, Illinois, he spends most of his time in Salt Lake City, Utah training and mentoring future Olympians and World Champions.

Initially starting as a police officer, Bounty Tank eventually began his career as a bounty hunter and bail bondsman and has never looked back. He has taken advantage of his prowess in physical fitness and strength training to help propel his career to new heights. But he has also used his intelligence, experience and personality to effectively manage risk in a profession that is inherently dangerous. Frank is also an emerging artist, rapper and songwriter.

In Episode 115, we have an in depth discussion with Seattle based coach, Luka Hocevar, to talk about his development as a coach and a business owner. In the case of running, one of the biggest challenges is to find an intensity and volume of running that creates significant health and fitness benefits without placing an individual at risk for overtraining or injury. While the younger versions of yourself may have been able to withstand any type of workout that you would undertake, the ageing adult must exercise a little more control and discretion over their workouts to maximize their health and ensure longevity. Don and Derek share their strategies for incorporating workouts that give them the best bang for their buck, without setting them up for exhaustion, injury or a poor metabolic response. In many cases, the addition of appropriate recovery measures may be required for older adults to make sure you are fully rested before heading into the next workout. Making good decisions on training is absolutely necessary for everyone, but plays a bigger role for ageing adults.

In Episode 111, we talk about the amazing feats of endurance and mental strength of David Kilgore. As an ultra runner, David is no stranger to putting in hundreds of miles per week under his belt. He tells us about his training for some of the most gruelling races in the world, dealing with everything from heat exhaustion, altitude changes and creatively fueling himself. We discuss David’s training and his use of different footwear for different training and competition scenarios. Thankfully, David has managed to stay relatively injury free. As such, we talk about his approach to training intelligently for maintaining a long running career and lifestyle, while at the same time, not taking life or running too seriously.
David Kilgore, born in UK, raised in Florida and currently residing in NYC, is a runner of all trades from shorter distance races on the road/track to long ultra-distance on the trails. David placed third at the 2018 USATF 50K Trail Championships, won the 2018 Breakneck Point 42K and has a 50K PB of a mind-boggling 3:01. In 2019 he came in 4th at the USATF Trail Championships at Fourmidable 50k in California, made the 2019 USA Trail world team and ran a double marathon in Rio De Janeiro in 5:40:02 in ON Running CloudStratus shoes. He has accomplished all of this with a go-with-the-flow approach — running mostly by feel and finding inspiration simply by exploring new areas by foot.

In Episode 110, we get cozy with Dr. Rebecca Robbins and talk about her detailed work on sleep. Sleep is definitely a popular topic these days, so much so that it’s keeping us up at night trying to figure out how to get the best sleep. Dr. Robbins helps to clarify some of the key recommendations on sleep so that we can relax and fall asleep in a timely and sustainable manner. We talk about sleep and productivity, caffeine, alcohol, sleeping in, travel and jet-lag, sleep aids and bed-time routines. Dr. Robbins provides some great information on how to improve your sleep strategies and your overall health.
Dr. Robbins is an Instructor in Medicine at Harvard Medical School and an Associate Scientist at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital where she works with Dr. Charles Czeisler and Dr. Laura Barger. Her research uses marketing and novel communication tools and technologies (i.e., smartphones and other mobile devices) to design persuasive behavior change interventions to improve sleep and circadian health. Her research has appeared in such peer-reviewed publications as SLEEP, Sleep Health, Prevention Science, Health Communication, Preventing Chronic Disease, and the Journal of Occupational Health Psychology. In 2011, Dr. Robbins co-authored a book on techniques for how to get good sleep entitled Sleep for Success! with Dr. James B. Maas.
Dr. Robbins has been interviewed in such publications as the New York Times, the Financial Times, and Readers' Digest. She has appeared in National television segments for Fox Business News, ABC Nightline, and CBS This Morning. Dr. Robbins holds a Ph.D. in Communication and Health Marketing from Cornell University. She has held a teaching position in psychology at the Weill Cornell Medical College in Doha, Qatar.

We discuss all of the issues – past, present and future – related to our own air travel, but also look forward to the benefits of being able to travel and share experiences with our family, friends and people that we have yet to meet. Despite all of the negative experiences we have endured with air travel, we are cautiously optimistic about getting back to the ‘friendly skies’ in 2021.

Brandon Marcello is a recognized author, researcher, and international presenter, he routinely speaks around the world on a number of topics pertaining to elite-level performance. His work appears regularly in numerous journals, textbooks, and periodicals. He also has served as a consultant to U.S. military, many Division-I programs, International Sports Federations, as well and Adidas, Under Armor and Nike. Marcello holds a PhD in sports nutrition from Baylor University, and a MS and BS in Exercise Science from Marshall University. A Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) and Tactical Strength and Conditioning Facilitator (TSAC-F) by the National Strength and Conditioning Association, Marcello is also recognized as an RSCC*E by the same organization. He holds two certifications from the National Academy of Sports Medicine as a Performance Enhancement Specialist (PES) and Corrective Exercise Specialist (CES). Additionally he also maintains two certifications through U.S.A. Weightlifting.

In Episode 102, we have an in depth discussion with Fernando Reis, discussing his training and the road to the postponed 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games. Fernando talks about when and how he started training in the sport of Olympic Weightlifting, as well as some of the other sports he participated in as a young athlete. We discuss the intricacies of training and competing as a world class level Olympic Weightlifter and how important it was to develop his technical expertise from a very young age. Fernando talks about the equipment he uses and how his technique, training and recovery methods have changed over the years as a world class competitor. His upcoming competitions are the Pan American Weightlifting Championships in the Dominican Republic and the Olympic Games in Tokyo, and talk about his preparations for both those events.
Fernando Reis competes as an elite level Olympic Weightlifting at the 105kg+ weight class for Brazil. He won the bronze medal at the 2020 Junior World Weightlifting Championships. This was the first World Championship medal for Brazil at any age group, gender or weight class. He won the gold medal for the 2011 Pan American Games, and has placed 11th and 5th at the 2012 and 2016 Olympic Games respectively. He repeated as the gold medalist for the 2015 Pan American Games and then finished 10th at the 2015 World Weightlifting Championships, breaking the snatch and clean and jerk records for Brazil. In 2018, Reis won the bronze medal in the World Weightlifting Championships – the first medal for Brazil at this event. In 2019, he won his third consecutive Pan American Games gold medal in his weight class.

In Episode 101, we meet up with Joel Totoro to talk sports nutrition and supplementation. One of first questions we had was how does one choose a high quality supplement company for your health, nutrition and performance. We find out through Joel that a good deal of effort goes into selecting high quality ingredients for supplement product to make sure the customer gets the best and safest formulations for their needs. The products must be tested regularly for everything from pesticides to heavy metals to banned substances. Having researchers, medical doctors, naturopaths and registered dieticians as part of the team that all contribute to the development of high quality supplements is essential in this day and age. We discuss the use of supplements with young athletes and the key supplements that should be taken by adults to address typical deficiencies and provide a boost where possible. Other topics covered included hydration requirements to address cramping, supplementation needs when recovering from injuries, optimal protein sources, vegan options for protein, creatine use and nutritional advice for those of us that are getting older.

In our milestone Episode 100, we have the pleasure to meet up again with Dr. David Perlmutter to talk with him about his recent book, Brain Wash. In Episode 097, we are rejoined by one of our earlier podcast guests, Mr. John Callery, to get an update on the state of the opioid crisis in America and the steps that have been taken to keep citizens safe, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic. John updates us on the status of fentanyl in 2021 and the reasons behind its proliferation, as well as the challenges faced by the DEA in protecting the public from its sinister effects. We discuss the impact of COVID-19 and how it has changed the way drugs are used, trafficked and enforced. He explains how sophisticated the methods of the drug cartels can be with drug distribution and how they have adapted rapidly during this time. John also updates us on the role the DEA has played in monitoring the conduct of domestic pharmaceutical companies and their production and distribution of opiate-based medications. And, with almost 30 years of experience in the drug enforcement business, John tells us about his role as a technical advisor for major movies over the years that involve plots around law enforcement and illicit drug trafficking.
Mr. John W. Callery has a total of 35 years of law enforcement experience and began his law enforcement career in 1984 as a Police Officer in the United States Air Force (USAF) for six years. For four of those years, he was detailed to the prestigious USAF Presidential Honor Guard at Bolling AFB, Washington, D.C., serving then President Ronald Reagan. Mr. Callery continued his law enforcement career as a Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) Special Agent in 1992, initially assigned to the DEA Los Angeles Field Division (LAFD). Mr. Callery received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Public Administration from the University of Maryland and a Master’s of Science in Counterterrorism-WMD from the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) in 2007. He also holds a Master Certificate in Conflict Management from the University of Notre Dame’s Mendoza School of Business.
As the Special Agent in Charge (SAC) of the San Diego Field Division (SDFD) he is currently leading the men and woman of the SDFD in concentrating on the opioid overdose death investigations, fentanyl laced drugs, Mexican Cartel operations and the enduring scourge of methamphetamine trafficking in the region. Mr. Callery is also a professional public speaker and has conducted hundreds of lectures around the globe on a myriad law enforcement and counter terrorism topics.

In Episode 096, we are honoured to enjoy the company of Bill Crudup. Billy has been a long-time member of Drive495 in New York City and has shared more than a few intense and gruelling workouts under the close scrutiny of Don. We begin by speaking to Billy about his role as world class runner and legend, Steve Prefontaine, in the 1998 film, Without Limits. He outlines the training and preparation for the film and how they pieced together the numerous races required for depicting Prefontaine’s thrilling competitions. We then transition into Billy’s preparation for Almost Famous, where he played a skilled lead guitarist for an up and coming seventies rock band. Once again, Billy had to learn from some of the best in the world to create the illusion of guitar brilliance, piecing together memorable scenes for the movie. We quickly learn that Billy is a master in the art of taking brief moments in time and portraying himself as a world class performer throughout movies and television episodes. We even get to witness more of his acting and singing brilliance in the first season of The Morning Show, and anxiously await Season 2. And, all the while he still finds the time to fit his workouts into his busy schedule.
Billy Crudup is an American film, theatre and television actor who is known for such films as Without Limits, Almost Famous, Big Fish, The Stanford Prison Experiment, Spotlight and Alien Covenant. More recently, Crudup has starred in the critically acclaimed Apple TV series, The Morning Show, receiving the Emmy Award for Best Supporting Actor in a Drama Series for his role. Billy was born in Manhasset, New York, received his undergraduate degree at the University of North Carolina and his Master of Fine Arts degree at the Tisch School of the Arts at New York University.

In Episode 094, we re-connect with Brett Bartholomew in the final few weeks of 2020 after having first interviewed him just under three years ago. In Episode 093, we spend one of our final sessions of 2020 with Bobby Maximus. Bobby talks about the motivation he used and still uses today to develop and drive his career. Hailing from a small town in Northern Ontario, Bobby managed to work his way up the tactical and sporting ladder using a blue collar attitude. He also talks about how training and fitness adds significant value to his life and he helps others to find that same enjoyment and motivation around physical preparation and fitness. Bobby continues to apply this approach to his own daily training, even as he approaches middle age, keeping his workouts fresh and varying up the programming as he feels necessary. Whatever it takes to maintain his enjoyment of the process of exercising and maximizing his potential.
During his career Bobby Maximus has been featured in numerous workout publications, conducted many seminars and worked with numerous Tier One Assets and Special Forces groups within the United Stated military. Bobby is also a regular contributor to Men’s Health Magazine and is the Keeper Of Authenticity at Lalo Tactical. In the past, Bobby was a police officer in serving as a member of the Peel Regional Police Force as well as The Toronto Police Service. He spent time on the road, as part of the Toronto Anti-Violence Intervention Strategy Team, and also as a Defensive Tactics Instructor. He has also competed in numerous fight competitions across North America. In 2006 he fought in UFC 58, UFC 62 and Ultimate Fight Night 5, where he won Submission of the Night. Robert also starred on Spike TV's The Ultimate Fighter series, was the Ring of Fire light-heavyweight champion and fought for an amateur world kickboxing championship. In addition to his policing, training and fighting career, Bobby earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Western Ontario with a double major in Psychology and English. He also earned a Bachelor of Education graduate degree from Lakehead University.

In Episode 092, we sit down with Dr. John Jaquish to find out why weightlifting and cardio are a waste of time. While it may sound like a click-bait title, Dr. Jaquish brings up some very compelling arguments around why your expectations around weightlifting and cardio may be misplaced. He talks about his own personal experiences around training, shedding fat, building muscle and strengthening bones. Dr. Jaquish also discusses the device he invented to build bone density, muscle strength and overall lean body mass, and identifies the reasons he believes it provides superior results to conventional weightlifting and cardio, particularly when it comes to muscle development and fat burning.
John Jaquish began his experience in life sciences after being told by his Mother that she had been diagnosed with osteoporosis. John, in an effort to help his mother, created a device to place axial loading through bone to safely cause osteogenic responses to those loading events. The device was designed to trigger the effects of high-impact loading, but without the risk of injury. Dr. Jaquish is currently advancing osteogenic loading research and speaking worldwide about its implications, as well as developing other biotechnology devices and products that will aid in advancing the health and wellbeing of people all around the world. He frequently presents on the topics of osteogenic loading and whole body vibration and has disseminated his research at the World Congress on Osteoporosis, the Medical Wellness Association, multiple ageing/age management conferences, and the Google campus. Writings include multiple peer-reviewed publications in medical journals, and the book Osteogenic Loading. Dr. Jaquish has recently been invited to participate on the editorial board of Diabetes Open, a peer-reviewed medical journal.

In Episode 091, Don and Derek tackle the very important topic of concussions and traumatic brain injuries with rehabilitation expert, Natasha Wilch. We discuss the various causes of head injuries and concussions, as well as the proper treatment once a concussion is diagnosed. Don even lets us in on his experiences with concussions, at least the ones that were actually diagnosed. Thus, one of the biggest priorities in the process, as identified by Natasha, is truly conducting a proper diagnosis and then beginning a sound treatment process for the concussion. We examine the various activities that lead to head injuries, as well as many the various measures to help reduce the incidence of concussion in athletes of all types. We must also be aware of the other side effects of concussions including depression, loss of coordination, sleep disorders, learning challenges and other long-term neurological effects of repeated blows to the head. Natasha also talks about the efficacy of virtual and online sessions to not only help diagnose concussions, but also guide people through the rehabilitation process, particularly when in-person appointments are not as easy during a global pandemic.

Half Iranian – half American, Arash Rahbar is a professional Classic Physique competitor. He was the runner-up of the 2016 Mr. Olympia Classic Men’s Physique, and the winner of the 2016 New York Pro. While Arash has achieved an avid success in a short period of time, he didn’t step on stage until the age of 32. For most of his life, Arash was enthralled by bodybuilding; looking up to greats like Arnold, Ronnie, and The Maryland Muscle Machine. However, he never felt his physique was good enough to compete in bodybuilding. It was in 2014, when Arash decided it was time to finally put the spray tan on. He confidently stepped onto the NPC Bev Francis Atlantic States stage, taking home the 1st place trophy. That same year, Arash won the IFBB North American Championships, which earned him a Professional status in bodybuilding.

In Episode 085, Don and Derek have the pleasure of speaking with functional range and mobility pioneer, Dr. Andreo Spina. Dr. Spina starts off with a discussion around the term ‘mobility’ and how he defines it within his treatment system and his educational courses. He even touches on the approach to his own personal health and fitness. The discussion then jumps to the topic of spine and joint health, as it relates to mobility and stability. Dr. Spina speaks in great depth on the topics of movement and movement screening to maximize health and minimize the potential for injury, and also discusses the importance of addressing and managing pain on both a physical and psychological level.
Dr. Spina holds a Bachelor of Kinesiology degree from McMaster University. In Episode 084, Don and Derek discuss the elephant in the room and the impact of ageing on their exercise routines. We are all ageing and there is not stopping that process. It’s no surprise that exercising when you are in your twenties looks a lot different than when you are in your forties or fifties. While Don and Derek may still be in great physical shape, and may even be more generally fit than when they were younger, there are still many challenges to staying healthy and fit as you get older. While aerobic and endurance abilities may be improved or maintained, speed and elastic abilities are very difficult to hold onto as you get beyond your thirties and forties. Strength can be improved and maintained, but as testosterone levels begin to decline dramatically, fatigue can be much more prevalent.
Don and Derek discuss how they have managed to stay ahead of the curve with their fitness and athletic abilities despite the ageing process. They also point out the realities of getting older and how you have to embrace new limitations with a sense of humor. There are specific reasons why you can no longer do the things you so easily managed as a younger person. One of the big reasons is self-preservation and survival. But, there are still many things you can do to keep your mind and body in optimal working order if you just take the proper time, care and effort.

Mental health has been a growing concern for individuals of all ages and coping in the midst of a global pandemic is certainly not making it any less anxious for people around the world. It is a perfect storm for people who don’t feel secure and, more importantly, perceive a lack of control for their surroundings, their fate and their future. In Episode 069 of the D&D Fitness Radio Podcast, we sit down with Melissa Nesle to discuss all aspects of dealing with mental health issues in the modern world. While the recent events around the COVID-19 are dominating the news each day, there are many other scenarios that can create mental health stresses for people that can be managed. Melissa discusses the basics around psychotherapy sessions and how she approaches various scenarios. She even discusses how she might approach therapy sessions with Don and Derek!
Melissa Nesle, LCSW, is a licensed psychotherapist with a full-time private practice in the Flatiron area of Manhattan and over 25 years of experience working extensively with adults, couples and families in a variety of settings. She sees adults of all ages, and has a particular expertise and passion for her work with emerging women, focusing on a wide range of issues including, self-esteem, dating and relationships, body image, depression, loss, anxiety, substance misuse and professional growth. Prior to transitioning to full time practice, Melissa held a position at Columbia University Medical Center’s Department of Psychiatry for 17 years.

Recent studies have indicated that over 50% of the US population will be considered obese by the year 2030. Additionally, Americans are spending hundreds of billions of dollars on fitness classes, exercise equipment and active apparel with some of the poorest returns for overall activity and health in the world.
“The United States leads the world in spending for every segment, including fitness classes ($37 billion), sports and recreation ($58 billion), apparel and footwear ($117 billion), equipment and supplies ($37.5 billion), mindful movement, such as yoga ($10 billion), and related technology ($8.1 billion). And yet, according to the academic journal The Lancet, for all of this spending, we rank 143rd globally for actual participation in physical activity. “ OutsideOnline.com
In Episode 068, the conversation focuses in on solving some of the problems around the epidemic of obesity and the ineffectiveness of current strategies. Is it just about choosing the right diet and exercise, or is it a deeper issue of our mindset around devoting consistent time and energy to living a healthier lifestyle? Until we determine the true causes of poor diet and exercise practices, as well as healthcare concerns, no amount of money will fix the problem.

Following the recent Super Bowl win by the Kansas City Chiefs, Don and Derek discuss the issue of identifying, nurturing and managing talent within an organization in Episode 067. While people put a lot of emphasis on coaching and strategic decisions within a game, there is no doubt that you have to have the talent to put you in a position to win a championship. When a team is positioning themselves to make a championship run, it involves a lot of off-season deals to bring the right players into the fold. In some cases, it is a longer-term plan that involves drafting the right individuals to fit your scheme or philosophy. But, there is no doubt that you need the horses to win the race.
We also discuss the pros and cons of acquiring individuals who may also bring some baggage to the party. The recent documentary on the life and downfall of former New England Patriot, Aaron Hernandez, is an extreme example of drafting someone who was a tremendous talent, but also was saddled with a questionable past. Teams are faced with a lot of information on every player they evaluate, including personality tests and investigative information from their security personnel on every player. Where does a team draw the line even though a player may have the potential to be a public relations nightmare? What can you do to support a player, athlete or celebrity to make sure they follow the right path and make good decisions? These and other questions will be discussed by Don and Derek in great detail in Episode 067.

Recent events have encouraged Don and Derek – in Episode 066 – to discuss their involvement with family and the decisions around how they spend their time. The highly publicized helicopter accident tragedy that occurred in California with Kobe Bryant, his daughter and seven other crew and passengers quickly became a time of reflection for many parents. Creating an appropriate work balance is ultimate key to fulfillment. Both Don and Derek enjoy the work that they do, coaching, educating and helping people to achieve their goals. At the same time, they both recognize that quality time with family must be set aside or integrated in a way that enables that balance to be achieved.
While all of Don and Derek’s kids are involved in sport, the goal of all of their interactions is to have fun. Sport is an opportunity for bringing family together while avoiding the negative outcomes where parents can sometimes take things far too seriously, impacting the enjoyment of the kids. Once you spend time in an unwise manner, it is impossible to get that time back. One of the big takeaways of this discussion is to value every moment and don’t be afraid to be selfish and spontaneous when it comes to family time together.
