Inspired by the gonzo reporting of @owensoundlivearchive, Georgian Bay Roots walks you through one weekend of live music (plus some road tunes along the way) in this corner of the world. Friday night kicks off with a Thresher (Owen Sound) live show, a Saturday afternoon at Four Winds Festival's Emerging Artist Showcase means songs from Equal (Oshawa), Isla-Maria (Gravenhurst), Odd Marshall (Port Elgin), Jessie Corrigan and the Neustadt Sound and Taylor Abrahamse (Peterborough). Road tunes back to the Scenic City are supplied by Natlak (Vancouver), fronted by former Summerfolk Youth Discovery winner Sterling Mackenzie, and The Apes Have Landed (Taiwan), an far flung outfit of Owen Sound, think Clock Strikes, expats. Saturday night is Jazzmyn's with Larry Jensen and Pete Devlin and Sunday afternoon is wiled away with a Katie Gleiser recital of Debussy and Ravel masterworks, spoken for on today's show with a Ravel piece for piano and strings, performed by Sweetwater Festival performers Philip Chiu and Cameron Crozman. New tracks from Drew McIvor (Walter's Falls) and Bodies of Water (Meaford) ease you into Sunday evening and, hopefully, a great week.

Georgian Bay Roots says goodbye to May 2023 by reaching for a Gordon Lightfoot deep cut about "the high side of the Bay" and the legendary Stars on 54 reboot of his 'If You Could Read My Mind'. We share some big news from the Beverly Glenn Copeland camp + his new single and talk up local appearances by Daniel Lanois, Jeremy Dutcher and The Sadies by spinning a track of each. This week's Georgian Bay Roots also features a Slint cover by local teen and music teacher Josh Bergeron (just like The Who said, the kids are alright!) and, since the timing is right with the Grey Highlands rodeo happening this weekend and for many other reasons besides, a rollicking number from Meaford songsmith Bill Monahan. The episode also takes a moment to mark the passing of Josh Arsenio, erstwhile Dromore resident that he is, by having a listen to his band Honest I's. Also listen in to find out what SLEDD (musical progeny of Summerfolk staple James Gordon) really thinks about spring and to discover the local 50 Cent connection!

Fooling around on April Fool's weekend, time traveling back to Summerfolk 1988 to check in with Parsons Green, which of course leads us straight to Bryan Leckie and the Krueger Band. The hour is rounded out by keeping it hyper local spinning a brand new Andy Elliott moment, a salute to B.A. Johnston, singing along with Urban Waters (Hail Guadalupe!), putting on our sailing shoes with Jayden Grahlman, getting down with The AB3 and, saving the best for last: an extra special 3 pack of tunes from Meafordite Bill Monahan's Greatest Hits 1977-2022 collection.

This week on Georgian Bay Roots, our host, Kelly Babcock, looks back at the acts he has had the pleasure to introduce as an MC on Summerfolk stages. It's an eclectic mix, no surprise there, just like the mix of music you'd expect at Summerfolk itself. There's familiar names and there's folks that don't get as much air time here at Georgian Bay Roots, but there's nothing on the show this week that doesn't deserve a spin so grab this podcast and see if you don't find something familiar and something new that you like.

As a belated celebration of Black History month the show howls to life with a deep dive into the music of a big musician with local ties: Eugene Smith. Tune in to hear a deep cut from the '64 CHUM charts with Jay & the Majestics, a scorcher from Ronnie Hawkins and the Hawks in '65 (the year Eugene joined the band), one from his '81 album Warmin' Up, with the Warm Up Band, on Pickering Ontario's Warm Up Records (inner sleeve printed at Bennett Press, Collingwood), a jam of Eugene's that found its way onto an episode of Miami Vice starring Phil Collins and, to wrap up the segment on Eugene and this celebration of Black History month, a Black power anthem from the hardest working man in show business himself, featuring Eugene's dad on bass! The rest of the show is comprised of a nod to two exemplary humans, one of which who lives in Grey County, that will be receiving honorary degrees from UofT, a digression into a little Southern Ontario queer history centered around a woman named Sara Ellen Dunlop and transmuted through the music of All We Can Give and Mamaquilla II, before wrapping up with a look ahead to Mariposa 2023 (Rufus Wainwright!) and Hackedepicciotto at the upcoming Electric Eclectics takeover of Heartwood in April. Listen and enjoy!
