Dear Friends,

Wed, 20 May 2020 - 20min - 103 - EP 102: How This Mama Used Her Free Time to Become an Instagram Influencer
For anyone furloughed or out of work right now and not sure what your next move is, this episode may spur some creative energy in you. I happen to know our next guest because she grew up in the same town as I did, and was friendly with my family. We connected on Instagram a little while back, which is when I got wind that she was creating content for brands and serving as an IG influencer. This got me wondering how she started doing that, because in her regular day to day life she’s a mama of three kids who doesn’t have a lot of time, yet she still managed to grow a network and eventually collaborate with brands and post just about every single day. She’s on her way to monetizing her instagram account now, so her story was one that I thought many of us at home and out of work may need to hear.
About Hillary Kezelman
Hillary Kezelman resides in sunny Southern California with her 3 babes and husband of 8 years. Being a stay at home mom is her daily job and she wouldn’t have it any other way. Instagram has been her creative outlet as it has opened many doors of friendships and the opportunity to explore brands in the industry. Over the past two months, she transitioned from just posting weekly about her family to becoming an influencer with daily and regular posts. She works with a variety of brands and helps them advertise their products. You can find Hillary’s instagram @Hillkez91011 and follow her journey!

Wed, 06 May 2020 - 51min - 102 - EP 101: Staying Sane During the Covid-19 Shutdowns
We are going to level with you, this has been just the weirdest time to be alive. We’re all experiencing the weirdness at the same time and in different ways. It’s like an unwanted Instagram filter of fear, anxiety and uncertainty has been applied to the whole world, and none of us quite knows what to do about that because we’re in uncharted territory. But at the same time, springtime is coming and birds are singing, people are still falling in love, kids are drawing rainbows with sidewalk chalk and ordinary humans are stepping up in amazing ways to do what needs doing, even if it’s scary. It’s the best of times and the worst of times, all at once.
Cynthia and I recorded this episode more than two weeks ago, hoping things would be much improved by now, but things are still really hard out in the world. We chatted about staying sane and productive during the COVID-19 crisis and I think there is some good positive advice here if you’re needing a boost. For one thing, we both think laughter is one of the keys to sanity. I want you to know that Cynthia and I are dealing with our own struggles this year, so we’re certainly in the same boat as you. Stay safe, stay home if you can, and please enjoy the episode.
If you feel inclined and haven’t already done so, we would love it if you would leave us a review on Apple podcasts and give some love back to help us achieve our goals in 2020.

Have you ever had the gut feeling that you needed to do something and take a leap but you felt unsure? Have you ever wanted to go into a new industry but were feeling uneasy if you should take the risk, even though there was nothing stopping you? If these sound like you then you will want to tune into a very cool episode today focused on taking a risk when the time is right. I got to interview Chris Casile, who went from losing her job to taking a leap into a new one in an emerging industry with no guardrails. Talk about guts!
About Chris Casile

Chris received a Bachelor of Science in Interior Design from Philadelphia University and honed her skills as an interior designer with several large architecture firms in Philadelphia. Wed, 01 Apr 2020 - 38min - 100 - EP 99: Surviving and Thriving Through Creativity with Jennifer Blaine
I’m here today to bring you a very special episode that I recorded with my amazing friend Jennifer Blaine. If you’re a long-time listener, you’ll know that Jennifer has been on the show twice before, but this is my first time getting to interview her. We had the most amazingly deep conversation about creativity that had us both in tears by the end. I honestly didn’t want it to end and I think we could have talked for at least another hour, but I am so so proud of what we managed to capture here. I hope this conversation gives you good things to think about if you’re stuck at home waiting out the coronavirus like me and everybody else.
This episode is for the artists and creatives out there, especially the artists like me who sometimes struggle for a reason to keep making art. It’s for writers who have lost the plot, painters who are procrastinating and actors who aren’t sure if they can do one more audition. So strap your headphones on extra tight and enjoy the show!
About Jennifer Blaine
Jennifer Blaine has been performing one-woman shows for 25 years. Her original writing, performing, and comedy delve into serious and socially relevant issues and provides audiences the opportunity to unite in laughter. Jennifer has opened for George Carlin, and performed with Chris Rock and Joe Piscopo. She has worked with iconic actors such as Glenda Jackson, Laura Linney, Joanne Woodward, and Paul Newman. She was featured on ABC’s Philly After Midnight: Women Comedians and has lent her voice to hundreds of voiceover projects. According to the Philadelphia Daily News “not even Sybil can compete with Blaine’s cast of characters. Her comic genius is like Lily Tomlin and Tracey Ullman.”
Jennifer was the resident Theatre Arts Instructor at the Showstoppers program at The Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts from 2013-2018 in which she created four original plays on topical issues from bullying to civil rights. She produced the “5,000 Women” festival, showcasing artists and social activists, in 2011 and 2012 and in Philadelphia in 2014. Her multiple FringeArts solo works include Sorry, White Flight, Hearing Voices, and Ridiculous and Dirty Joke which she created with Vashti Dubois, founder of The Colored Girls Museum. Blaine has toured her solo work throughout the country to colleges and theatre festivals -- highlights include The OpenStage of Harrisburg, The White Privilege Conference, PIFA, and the Annenberg Center for the Arts. She currently performs The Vicissitudes of Travel, which depicts a family traveling through brain surgery, in art galleries, museums, theaters, and recently performed The Vicissitudes for Jefferson’s Health and Humanities department and Wesleyan University. Wed, 18 Mar 2020 - 1h 20min - 99 - EP 98: How Do You Teach Resilience? With Dr. Lucy Hone
This week our guest is an expert in resilience - what it is, if you can learn it, and how to teach it to your kids. Resilience is what separates the people who stay knocked down and the ones who decide to get back up and try again. It’s something I am fascinated by. Our guest Dr. Lucy Hone got personal and vulnerable as she shared her own story of grief and then later resilience.
About Dr. Hone
Dr Lucy Hone is a director of the New Zealand Institute of Wellbeing & Resilience, a research associate at AUT University, a published academic researcher, best-selling author and blogger for Psychology Today. In 2014, the sudden death of her 12-year old daughter, Abi, (along with Lucy and Abi’s friends Ella and Sally Summerfield in a tragic road accident) forced Lucy to turn her substantial academic training and professional practice to foster resilience in very personal circumstances. The blog she wrote in the aftermath of Abi’s death attracted international attention and resulted in the best-selling non-fiction title, What Abi Taught Us: Strategies for Resilient Grieving (Allen & Unwin, 2016), now available as Resilient Grieving in the US, Australia, UK and NZ.

Wed, 19 Feb 2020 - 43min - 98 - EP 97: How Your Brain May Be Working Against You and How You Can Hijack It with Noelle Cordeaux
I love learning about the science of our bodies - what makes them stronger and better, and how we can circumnavigate them when they’re not doing what we need them to. This was the topic of discussion with my next guest, who studies the brain and neurobiology. We talk about how brain development gets disrupted for girls, and how this plays into some of the setbacks that we see for women in our society. We also get into how our brains are trying to protect us but they sometimes end up causing illnesses like depression and isolation.
Noelle Cordeaux specializes in the relationship with one’s self. Her incredible “User’s Guide to the Brain” perspective focuses on how a basic knowledge of neurobiology helps us understand our brain & body. Noelle also reveals everything you never knew about romantic love & the brain!
Noelle is the CEO and co-founder of JRNI where she helps clients get unstuck & make real progress. She holds a B.A. in Literature (Rutger). A Graduate Certificate in Executive & Professional Coaching (University of Texas at Dallas). Her graduate studies include a Masters in Social Work & PhD in Human Sexuality.
And, for our listeners, Noelle and her team have a special offer if you go to
https://www.jrni.co/podcast where you can get your free guide and $200 off admission to JRNI.
Before we get to our interview with Noelle we just wanted to remind everyone that we have a goal WE want to achieve to get 100 reviews on apple podcasts! Quick programming note: We decided to launch our episodes on a bi-weekly basis now! Brennen and I grind these episodes out week after week but we burned ourselves out as a result. Our content that we were recording became a message for us and to us, in many ways. We have no one else helping us [yet] and so decided that in order to maintain our creative energy and keep the momentum going on the podcast, we needed to back off how much content we are producing. This was a difficult decision for us, but in doing this we will be able to book bigger and more influential guests and bring even higher quality content to you all without feeling like we are on the treadmill from hell. Thanks for understanding and we appreciate your support and listenership! Happy 2020!

As we round out the year and head into the new year, which is always a great time for resetting and restarting, we want to give you the tools you need to light a fire and blaze a trail for whatever you want to achieve in your own life. It’s why we brought back Andy Ramage, who started One Year No Beer, had appeared on the Rich Roll show, and now has written a book Let’s Do This which will help you understand what you need to get or stay motivated.
Fun teaser: it’s a really simple thing that everyone can do every day. But you have to be willing to show up.
About Andy Ramage:
Andy is a former professional athlete. After injury cut short his career, he went on to create two multimillion-dollar city brokerages.
After achieving traditional “success” Andy was left unfit, unhealthy, overweight, stressed and unhappy. He believed there had to be another way to win big in the city while staying super fit, healthy, maintaining a happy home life and doing it with a smile on his face. So he set out on a quest to study peak performance and well-being. As part of this process, Andy took a break from alcohol. It was this experience that helped him unlock the behavioral change code and revitalize his business and life.
Inspired, Andy co-founded with Ruari Fairbairns a world-leading behavioral change platform OneYearNoBeer.com (OYNB) which is a 28, 90 or 365-day alcohol-free challenge. OYNB has inspired over 70,000 people to transform their relationship with alcohol and power up their life.
Andy’s first book, The 28-Day Alcohol-Free Challenge, is a best seller, and his second book on motivation called Let’s Do This is available to pre order on Amazon now. Andy also has a TEDx talk: This Pill Will Make You Limitless.
You can catch Andy almost daily LIVE on both the @OneYearNoBeer & @_andyramage Instagram and FB pages inspiring over 90,000 followers.
Andy also has masters degree in coaching psychology and positive psychology and is currently exploring a PhD. Andy’s unique background, education and experience make him one of the world’s leading behavioral change & peak performance experts.

Wed, 11 Dec 2019 - 47min - 93 - EP 92: From Nearly Broke to FitFluencer with Andrea Allen
We have an awesome episode this week for all the moms out there. I actually came across our guest today when I was searching for exercises to help my bad back, and ironically, found videos about core health and postpartum strength training. I kept saving videos from her as she popped up in my social feed, but was most impressed with her focus on women during and after pregnancy because there seems to be so little out there for anyone who is trying to establish their core connection again after pregnancy. I also just loved her down home, real perspective as a busy mother of four children and a woman running her own business.
About Andrea Allen
Andrea Allen grew up playing sports but didn't get into fitness and health until college. She used physical exercise to pull herself out of her depression her freshman year of college and became hooked on the endorphins. She graduated with a degree in public health education. Andrea became a fitness instructor during this time as well. In 2007 she tore her ACL while playing lacrosse for BYU in a game versus Air Force so she got stuck sitting around for a few months. It was around this time that she realized that she had to do more than exercise to get fit; she needed to eat healthy to feel good about herself and realized what a gift a healthy body is.
But things weren’t all roses and unicorns from there for Andrea. She started binge eating, but her habits slowly turned to balanced eating and now she shares her meals and workouts with her fans, and in particular moms.
Andrea is the mother of 4 children, the first two (twin girls) of which were conceived after fertility treatments, and in-vitro.
She is now the Founder and Owner of Deliciously Fit n Healthy where she is making multiple 6-figures and helping moms during pregnancy and postpartum.

Brennen and recorded this episode together because Brennen witnessed a friend's life event that shifted his own life in a big way. For those of you who are stuck in any way, this show is a great reminder that nothing is permanent, not even your life; that you can change at any point; and that if we can get unstuck in our everyday lives so can you. Meanwhile, we want to wish everyone a Happy Thanksgiving! We want to thank everyone who has been listening and following along with Goal Magic. Wed, 27 Nov 2019 - 20min - 91 - EP 90: Avoiding Holiday Weight Creep, with Mackie Root
With the holidays next week, and the onslaught of parties, goodies, and just the overall stress that we sometimes feel to make it all happen, we wanted to bring back one of our favorite guests to help us manage our health during this time, Mackie Root. Mackie and I chat about the best ways and the most simple things you can do to ensure that you don’t let the holidays “gift” you with an extra 15 pounds come the new year.
For those of you who hadn’t listened to our first episode with Mackie, you should definitely check that out because he does a great job of simplifying what we all really need to do to hit our fitness goals or just stay healthy. In this episode, it’s all about managing your health without depriving yourself.

Wed, 06 Nov 2019 - 1h 05min - 88 - EP 87: How Jess Riegel of Motivote is Making Voting an Easier Part of Adulting
Our episode today is one that is fueled by our own desire to continue to push for a fair and representative democracy. While voting is not something that everyone does in every election (local or presidential) we want to urge people to go and vote so that your voices are heard more loudly and consistently. The Atlantic is saying to brace yourself for the voter “tsunami” and Pew Center Research is showing that Gen X’ers, Millennials, and Gen Z are turning out in higher numbers than Baby Boomers. The importance of getting your voice heard through your vote has never been more apparent or needed, which is why we wanted to bring on our guest today, Jess Riegel.
Jess Riegel is Co-Founder and CEO of Motivote, a voting accountability platform for Millennials. Jess started her career with Teach for America, leading first-grade classrooms in New Orleans and Newark. As a consultant with Cause Strategy Partners, she advised nonprofits and foundations on board governance. She also led impact evaluation efforts for an educational tech startup, Kinvolved. While earning her MPA in Social Impact, Innovation and Investment from the NYU Wagner School of Public Service, Jess served on the Rockefeller Foundation’s social finance team. Jess holds a B.A. in Urban Studies and Political Economy from the University of Pennsylvania.

Wed, 30 Oct 2019 - 52min - 87 - EP 86: Healing Your Relationships Through Finding Empathy in Everyday Moments, with Figs O’Sullivan of Empathi
“Knowing yourself is the beginning of all wisdom” Aristotle once said, and it’s one of the reasons that I brought our next guest on our show. The episode we have got for you today will have you turning the mirror on yourself over and over, so that you can better understand your own reactions to loved ones in your life, and have you taking responsibility instead of pointing the finger, which is what most of us do when faced with a situation that has us thinking “why did they do that ME?” Our guest today, Figs O’Sullivan, who is the leading Relationship Therapist in San Francisco and the Bay Area, will help everyone realize that your reactions are actually not at all about the other person, they’re all about you... and that is a constant for everyone.
This episode is going to change your relationship with yourself and help you reflect on what’s really happening when someone lashes out at you, or you break down and feel helpless, or a loved one gets angry and takes it out on you.
About Figs O’Sullivan
Fiachra “Figs” O’Sullivan, is the Founder and Chief Empathy Officer at Empathi, which provides step-by-step guidance for couples and individuals who care about their relationships. He is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, who is certified in Emotionally Focused Therapy for Couples and individuals, and a passionate entrepreneur, driven to change lives for the better. He strives to interact with clients as a fellow traveler on life’s journey, allowing them to easily dive deeper into their “stuff” with his down-to-earth philosophy.
Constantly working on his skills and psychotherapeutic approach, Figs is passionate about helping couples love each other and feel more connected. Figs has spent years working with frustrated couples at a crossroads in their relationship; they want to make things work but are stuck in what Figs calls their “Waltz of Pain”, which led him to create Empathi. Inspired by attachment theory, improvisational dance and theatre, experiential psychotherapy, and Emotionally Focused Therapy, Empathi provides fun, effective, and simple solutions to help couples stop fighting and snuggle more. Figs designed Empathi to be available for everyone, no matter their socio-economic status, orientation or station in life.
Having been heard on NPR “All Things Considered” as a Relationship Expert, Figs is the most sought-after and highly-rated couples counselor in Silicon Valley! Figs is funny, engaging, opinionated, quick-witted, and sometimes irreverent—delivering it all with a charming Irish brogue.

Wed, 23 Oct 2019 - 59min - 86 - EP 85: How Millennials Can Manage Student Loans and Debt, While Also Building Liquidity, with Robert Farrington of The College Investor
One of the biggest things on my mind is millennial debt and the crisis it is creating for our economy. I think about this A LOT, in part because my husband and I discuss his student debt ALL. THE. TIME. Business Insider says that the average millennial earns $35,455. The average student-loan debt per 2018 graduate is $29,800. A recent SuperMoney report found that, since the 1970s, young adults have seen only a $29 income increase, while college tuition has more than doubled” which means that, sadly, we are getting more educated without any financial opportunity on the other side of it.
This topic has sometimes been called “the next bubble to burst” and it’s something that our current democratic presidential candidates have policies around, should they make it into office. The issue is that big!
Because I think this topic is *so* critical for so many people, I wanted to bring back a favorite guest of ours, Robert Farrington who is a Millennial money expert and founder of thecollegeinvestor.com. Robert’s path is a fascinating one - starting with his time working as a manager at Target while blogging on the side, to then making $45,000 a month on his blog to now making multiple 7 figures. Robert focuses on millennials and millennial money, as a major topic of his expertise.
About Robert Farrington
Robert Farrington is a Millennial Money Expert and Founder of TheCollegeInvestor.com.
He is on a mission to help millennials get out of student loan debt and start building wealth for their future. He also helps parents make smart choices about college financing options and navigating the complex world of paying for school.
Through his work at TheCollegeInvestor.com, Robert Farrington has emerged as one of the nation's leading student loan debt experts.
Farrington launched TheCollegeInvestor.com from his home in 2009, while finishing his MBA at the UC San Diego Rady School of Management. Being passionate about investing and personal finance, he wanted to connect with others who shared his passion. Not finding what he was looking for on campus, he created TheCollegeInvestor.com as a resource for young adults about money, covering topics from paying for college and escaping student loan debt, to investing their first dollars after graduation.
Since then, Robert Farrington has shared his successful student loan and wealth building expertise with thousands of young adults, both online, in person, and as a contributor to major publications such as Forbes and Huffington Post.
The San Diego native's drive to help others and "geekiness" have fueled his work as a blogger, journalist, entrepreneur, and family man. Farrington earned a Bachelor's of Arts in Political Science from UC San Diego, and an MBA from the Rady School of Management at UC San Diego.
Passionate about his family, FinTech, and watching the latest Marvel movie, Farrington resides in San Diego with his wife and son.

Cynthia and I have a fun episode for you today where we try out our brand new Wheel of Questions segment. What is the Wheel of Questions, you ask? It’s a list of quirky questions that we’ll randomly ask guests at the end of each show, just for fun. Now, I must admit that this segment didn’t quite go as we planned, but the results are pretty funny and we got into some interesting territory.

Wed, 25 Sep 2019 - 1h 07min - 82 - EP 81: “I Speak B*tch”, with Marnie Nir of the Handel Group
Conviction comes before action. This was a quote that we posted on instagram the other day (which, if you haven’t yet checked that out you need to get on that train!) about how committing to something mentally informs your body to then take action. This tenet of life remains true for everyone - did you ever find yourself doing something or calling someone or emailing about something somewhat mindlessly and wonder what made you do it? But when you look back, you realize you had been thinking about it day in/day out and on/off for many days or weeks. It’s like your body knew before your brain admitted what it was doing (which was basically hypnotizing you, ha!)
Conviction coming before action is something that our guest this week knows about all too well.
Hi everyone and welcome to show where it’s our mission to get you unstuck. As some of you may know if you’ve listened to our show or read our emails, we have a partnership with the Handel Group. I have been honored to interview Lauren Zander, whose work has been read by THE Halle Berry, among other celebrities. And so it is with great pleasure that I got to interview her sister, Marnie Nir.
About Marnie Nir
Humor, compassion and candor are the driving forces in Marnie Nir’s work as a Coach with The Handel Group. She finally returned from Florida to her home state of New York, but has shuffled around, from New York to California and back again.
Marnie’s professional and personal life has come full-circle as well. A student of Slavic Language and Literature at UCLA, Marnie graduated with a BA and an understanding of Russian Literature as “purification through suffering.” Years later, after several jobs in publicity and production, most notably for the Moscow Circus, she began to see that, at least in her own life, suffering was not mandatory. After marrying and giving birth to her first child, Marnie started coaching with her sister, Lauren Zander, creating the dream of who she wanted to be as a mother.
However, her work with Lauren took everything in her life to a much deeper level. More than a decade later, she is now the mother of two, a trained Coach in The Handel Method, a freelance writer, a blogger for the Huffington Post, DatingAdvice as well as her own blog (The Sour MILF) and formerly a columnist for the Jupiter Post and Westport News. Most notably, she and her writing partner have created a half-hour animated TV series: Mother Up!, which stars Eva Longoria.
As with every area of her life, Marnie’s coaching is characterized by joyful honesty and courageous commitment. She brings lightness and levity to her work with her clients. “I have zero problem telling on myself. I use my inner jerk to point out theirs.” Consequently she is continually inspired by the difference that telling the truth offers to her clients. For Marnie, it’s about building the muscle of personal integrity, where what comes out of your mouth is so important. “In this way, you can really go from ‘I will go to the gym,’ to ‘I will win an Emmy.’” Having been married for more than 18 years, Marnie particularly enjoys working with wives, mothers and singles, because she is well-acquainted with the challenges they face and speaks b*#ch, martyr and chicken fluently. Marnie offers her clients the tools they need to author the lives they want, with wit, sincerity and her occasional truck-driver mouth. She lives in Pound Ridge, NY with her husband and two children.
For Goal Magic listeners only we have a special offer from the Handel Group:
You can learn to human better with Lauren Zander's online coaching course, Inner.U.

Wed, 18 Sep 2019 - 1h 02min - 81 - EP 80: Want to unlock your best self? Change your relationship with alcohol, with Andy Ramage
Embracing challenge is a theme we have been talking about for the last couple weeks on the podcast, which is why I’m super excited to bring you an interview I recorded with Andy Ramage, founder of One Year No Beer (OYNB).
For anyone who doesn’t know about or hasn’t heard about OYNB, it’s become an international movement, reaching almost 100K people! Andy’s message is so powerful and hit me at a time when I was uncovering some of my own epiphanies around my distaste for alcohol after spending so many years wining and dining with colleagues and clients. Andy has been on the Rich Roll Podcast, which is where I got hooked on his message, and then asked him to come on our show.

Wed, 04 Sep 2019 - 57min - 79 - EP 78: How long are you willing to endure the pain of feeling stuck?
I once heard a quote that read, “The day came when the risk to remain tight in the bud was more painful than the risk it took to blossom” and it always reminds me that transitioning and becoming can be a really scary thing, but everyone has a tipping point. Everyone has that threshold where they realize that whatever is on the other side of the pain they are feeling HAS to be better than the muck that they’re in. It’s why this week’s episode is so near and dear to Brennen and me because we have both been there.
For anyone who doesn’t know the Goal Magic story, our podcast actually began because we were stuck and seeking ways to stretch ourselves creatively and professionally. We both felt weighed down by the idea of what our lives would look like if we continued on the same path, doing our same thing, and still feeling like something is missing. We both had this amazing creative energy together when we had worked together and knew there was a spark still there, but didn’t know what to do with it.
And from this energy - this feeling of stuck-ness - Goal Magic was born. It’s why we are excited to be able to offer back to our community a way that we can now help them get unstuck. By launching our coaching, Brennen and I get to work directly with YOU and move you through this transition, whatever it may be - losing weight, a major career change, a swirling feeling of anxiety and challenges in all areas of life, financial debt, and more. Brennen and I talk coaching today, so tune in to hear if you’re ready to change your life!

Wed, 21 Aug 2019 - 57min - 77 - EP 76: Working The Second Shift, with Gina Hadley
Our episode this week is for anyone who is part of the gig and/or expert economy - who finds themselves wanting to work, but also wanting to not feel drained by the micro-decisions around how to manage work with babies, kids, aging parents, or perhaps even a side hobby that you adore. I’ve personally become interested in the gig economy and the expert economy when I finally made the decision to leave corporate and any semblance of a full time job. I was too exhausted by the politics, by working for incompetent people, and by the feeling of not receiving the rewards or merits of the effort that I was putting in. I know there a lot of you who can relate to this, and what I was feeling, and one of those people was also Gina Hadley. Gina wanted to work but didn’t want it to be at the mercy of her life, like so many other people. And so when she created The Second Shift, she enabled a workforce of highly trained and capable women to work and live on their terms.
About Gina Hadley
Gina Hadley does not like the status quo--if something doesn't work, fix it. As co-founder of The Second Shift, making change is her daily mission. She works in close partnership with companies to design working cultures that support and retain women. By demonstrating how even small changes ripple into big impact, Gina helps businesses of all sizes shift their workplaces forward into more flexible, nimble working structures.
In addition to being a co-founder, Gina is in charge of new business at The Second Shift. In this role, she takes a consultative approach, nurturing close relationships with business partners and remaining connected to them from onboarding through ongoing engagements. Together they create solutions that best support their business needs and identify opportunities to incorporate on-demand expertise into their human resources strategies. Gina is known for helping move clients from talk to action. She also speaks regularly at industry conferences as a leading expert on the future of work, gender equity as good business, and flexibility as a talent pipeline solution.
Prior to founding The Second Shift, Gina was Worldwide Creative Coordinator at Ogilvy & Mather on the IBM business, and later pursued an entrepreneurial path as a founder of ads.com and Urban Monkeys in Seattle. Gina is an expert in being flexible and nimble, having moved her family cross-country four times in five years as a freelance consultant herself. She is now settled back in New York City with her husband and teenage daughter and son. Gina holds a B.A. from Connecticut College and an MFA from New York University.

Wed, 14 Aug 2019 - 56min - 76 - EP 75: When Your Workout Obsession Becomes Your Dream Job with BriAnne DeCarlo
We have a fun episode for everyone who has ever taken a class or pursued a hobby and thought: could I make a living doing this? The answer is yes, and BriAnne DeCarlo is here to share her story of how she did just that with a full time job, a husband and two kids. Some of the more interesting moments in our interview are when she talks about how she made a plan and created an exit strategy, but things still went awry, as well as how she translated her business skills from one industry to another. This story is one we all need to hear for every time we have been told “you just don’t know this space” or “you need more experience in this market” - BriAnne proves that you don’t, and that the haters can say what they want, but it’s only true if you believe it to be.
About BriAnne DeCarlo
BriAnne took her first Pure Barre class in 2011 and was instantly hooked. With two babies and a full-time career in corporate retail as a buyer for Urban Outfitters headquartered in Philadelphia, dance or fitness had never been a big part of her life. But Pure Barre classes quickly became an integral way for her to carve out time for herself, release stress, build muscle and strengthen the body and mind. At the same time, she began seeking an entrepreneurial opportunity to align with her 15+ years of experience in retail where she could combine her loves for business and buying. In 2016 the idea for Pure Barre Media, PA was born out of a desire to create a space in her town that empowers women, mothers and all people and provides a unique platform for a transformational, empowering, community experience of fitness, health and wellness. In September of 2018, BriAnne brought her vision of Pure Barre Media to life with the amazing Pure Barre workout and an altogether elevated experience. Wed, 07 Aug 2019 - 42min - 75 - EP 74: Till Death Do Us Part: Navigating Life’s Moments from Marriage to Death with Naila Francis
This week our episode is with a dear friend: Naila Francis. I had been stalking Naila on social media and kept seeing beautiful poetic posts from her about life and love, and also posts about couples whose marriages she officiated, looking blissfully happy and in love...only to be surprised later to see that she also became a certified death midwife. This seemed like a far stretch from the happy photos Naila posts of herself and her work as an officiant, not to mention that I had never heard about a death midwife before. I wanted to talk to Naila because I knew she had some deep spiritual insights to offer about life, love, marriage, and the circle of life all embodied in the notion “until death do us part.”
About Naila Francis
Naila Francis is a free spirit who has shaped her life by the call of joy, curiosity and a desire to engage with others in rich and meaningful ways. She is a writer, interfaith minister and wedding officiant who is also certified as a From Grief to Gratitude™ coach and as a death midwife. Naila spent many years as a print journalist interviewing dozens of artists and creatives, including Yoko Ono, Elizabeth Gilbert, Audra McDonald, Bobby McFerrin, Tim Robbins and India.Arie. But even with her traditional 9-to-5s (if you call interviewing P!nk while she dyed her hair or writing greeting cards “traditional”), she has always been drawn to the heart-centered and sacred. While she’s been basking in all the love she bears witness to as a wedding officiant for more than 10 years, her own journey of grief after losing her dad inspired her to be of service at another life threshold: our departure from this earth. As a death midwife and grief coach, she is committed to being a holistic, compassionate companion to the dying and their loved ones, while helping to raise awareness about how we can all experience a beautiful, dignified death. Wed, 31 Jul 2019 - 1h 09min - 74 - EP 73: Saying “I do” to a Creative Career with Lindsay Liebman
This week we are bringing you an episode that I recorded with Lindsay Liebman, who is the owner and founder of Paper & Posh. Lindsay’s story of being a lawyer, to then having kids and feeling like life got more complicated, to deciding to take a career U-turn is not dissimilar from many of the folks we speak with on our show. What got me about Lindsay’s episode is that her body knew - before her mind would admit - that she needed to make a career change.
Lindsay Liebman is the founder and owner of Paper & Posh, where she designs and creates luxury custom wedding invitations and day of stationery that convey the extraordinary love story of each individual couple. After practicing law for more than a decade, Lindsay decided to pursue her passion for graphic design, lush papers, and the creation of beautiful things, and, in 2011, established Paper & Posh in Media, Pa.
Since then, Lindsay has worked with over 600 couples, earning more than 100 five-star reviews across social media, The Knot, and Wedding Wire. She has earned the Knot Best of Weddings five years in a row and has been inducted into The Knot Best of Weddings Hall of Fame, and was recently recognized among PhillyMag.com’s "Super-Talented Philly Wedding Invitation Designers.”
Lindsay is an active volunteer for the Support Center for Child Advocates in Philadelphia, where she advocates for victims of child abuse and neglect with the goal of securing safety and a permanent, nurturing environment for every child. Lindsay is also a volunteer and sponsor for the Media Youth Center, and volunteers regularly in the Media, PA community schools and for the local youth sports programs.
Lindsay graduated from the University of Pittsburgh and the Temple University James E. Beasley School of Law. She resides in Media, Pa. with her husband and three children.

Wed, 24 Jul 2019 - 51min - 73 - EP 72: Finding True Grit with Andrea Hackman of One Village Coffee
https://www.onevillagecoffee.com/
Today, I have a fantastic interview for you with my friend Andrea Hackman, the President of One Village Coffee. We had a wide-ranging conversation, but the theme Andrea kept coming back to was the grit she developed growing up in rural Lancaster County in Pennsylvania. It was that same grit that pulled her marriage back from the brink of a breakup and kept her coffee business going even when a fateful decision she made went drastically wrong. Andrea is a survivor with a positive spirit and I think you’ll be inspired by her story.
About Andrea Hackman
Andrea is one of those people where a set career didn’t come naturally. Growing up, she was considered the typical Jack-of-all-trades, master-of-none. Her passion was people and service, but making that a career didn’t seem viable. With an undergraduate degree in Theology from Eastern University, Andrea began her career creating innovative community gatherings, which found a balance in her passions. But, it still felt like something was missing. It wasn’t until Andrea moved to Texas and began working in a large HR outsourcing and consulting firm, that she discovered her love for business.
After working for the firm for several years, Andrea pursued her MBA in International Economic Development. It was during her MBA coursework that her family began traveling and brainstorming about the idea of doing business differently. She focused every project on the idea of One Village Coffee. Writing the initial business plan, Andrea was part of the founding team that launched One Village Coffee in 2007. Her initial role was focused on operations and Finance.
After working for 2 years in the family business, Andrea took time off to have children and gain more external experience, working as the Operations Director for a local risk management firm.
In 2012 as a result of a family meeting, Andrea was identified as the family’s desired successor for One Village Coffee. Andrea returned to One Village Coffee in 2014 and became President in 2016. For Andrea, she found her “sweet spot” with One Village Coffee that combines her personal passions of people, service and business. Andrea lives in Telford, Pennsylvania with her husband, Scott, and two children.

Wed, 17 Jul 2019 - 1h 03min - 72 - EP 71: The Struggle is Real... Dealing with Low Motivation
I had a wonderful vacation this past holiday week, and got some much-needed space and relaxation, just by staying at home and trying very hard to not be productive. You see, I’d been starting to experience symptoms of burnout in recent days from the stress of managing two companies that need a lot of care and attention. I noticed that I was avoiding projects I normally enjoy, my sleep was suffering and I was having trouble completing workouts, which is really weird for me.
The conversation with Cynthia that you’re about to hear was actually what convinced me to take some time off to recover and recuperate from stress. Right at the end of the episode, you’ll be able to hear me have the realization in real time. Our topic for the episode is how to stay motivated and I share some really good tips with you, but as we were chatting, Cynthia really convinced me of the need to take a break and I’m SO glad I listened. I’m feeling so much better now, more like my old self. My sleeping is back on track, podcasting seems fun again and my workouts are going fantastic. In fact, I set a personal record on my Zwift cycling trainer last night and I was jumping for joy. If you’re feeling a little burned out or simply lacking motivation, this episode is for you. Every so often we get to interview people who are our heroes, who make us feel like fangirls and fanboys, and for me that person was Mary Clare Fischer, who is the wellness editor of Philly Mag and the editor of Be Well Philly. Be Well Philly is one of my favorite ways that I have been able to navigate the wellness scene in the Philly area. Receiving their magazine felt like I was getting in on all the secret tips, spots, and news. I found my workout classes, wellness community, and many healthy restaurants through Be Well Philly, not to mention that they named us a top podcast for wellness (holla!). As you can imagine, it’s no surprise that we welcomed Mary Clare with open arms when we were approached about having her on the podcast.
Mary Clare Fischer is a:
health and wellness editor at Philly mag, the regional magazine in the Philadelphia area
University of Maryland alumna with degrees in journalism, government, and politics
Michigan native with a penchant for college football, vacations “up north”
pescatarian, cookbook collector, book lover, occasional runner, human rights advocate, wide-eyed learner, overall nerd, and frequent abuser of caps lock
But most of all, she is a writer.
Nominate someone (or yourself) to be named Health Hero for 2019!

Wed, 26 Jun 2019 - 31min - 70 - EP 69: Chris Butsch on Employee Burnout & Happiness (in partnership with Solvecast)
I recently was on vacation doing some much needed recharging, which also gave me time to reflect on my life and career and where it is all headed. One of the things that I keep bumping up against is this idea of what it means to really enjoy your work, because I keep talking to people who are so burnt out from corporate, like myself. They’re tired of not owning their time, not having freedom, losing their creativity because they’re no longer doing the things that they enjoy at work, and just the sheer number of hours that we all put into “getting the job done.”
I don’t know if I’m attracting these people because I’m burnt out or if I’m just finding more people of my age range who feel similarly because we are at a pivotal point in our work lives, but it’s why this episode that I recorded with Chris Butsch was so fascinating to me.

I have been out of the country for some much needed re-charging, so Brennen had been holding down the Goal Magic Fort - many thanks and props to Brennen for his help and partnership!
Every time I take vacation it becomes a way for me to make space to reflect on my life path and purpose. On this last trip, I came to see that I really want to make a difference in this world - not only by helping people get unstuck but by creating a career infused with meaning so I have been reaching out to my network to get projects where I can dig my heels into my own intention.
I think so many of us have that feeling that our life’s purpose is bigger than the career we may currently be in, which is what happened to Cate Luzio who founded Luminary, a collaboration and co-working space specially designed to support women. Cate went from being in the world of big banking to going all in and self-funding Luminary, which was her brain child and has become her passion and has very much defined her next chapter.

Luminary is the ultimate career advocate offering members unparalleled programming and experiences. My guest today, Laura Gassner Otting, author of Limitless: How to Ignore Everybody, Carve Your Own Path, and Live Your Best Life talks to me about everything from screwing the Joneses, why “entrepreneur” is code for “bad employee,” anchor jobs and orbit jobs, doing your career your own way, and so much more.
Her book debuted as #2 in the Washington Post bestseller list right behind Michelle Obama.
I LOVED this book so much that I highlighted, penciled, and dog eared the pages in prep for the interview with Laura. Wed, 15 May 2019 - 1h 25min - 64 - EP 63: How a Divorce Birthed Her BIG Idea, with Kate McKibbin of $5K Funnel Formula
I adore this episode so so much, not only because our guest talks about how you can use funnels to supercharge your business and gives you some awesome tips and tools to do that... but also because she used her own experience of going through a divorce to fuel her vision for her brand and her products. Her mission was to automate her business such that it didn’t rely on her. I call her the “OG of Passive Income” because she really nailed how to get your business firing on all cylinders while allowing you to sip margaritas in Mexico. And who doesn’t want that??
Way back in 2007 (after cutting her teeth in the magazine industry) Kate McKibbin started her first blog, Drop Dead Gorgeous (DDG) Daily from scratch. She called it her "shoe money project," because she started it so she could occasionally afford some of the amazing shoes she wrote about all day long in her day job. Kate always thought of it as a business rather than a blog though, and it worked as DDG became her full-time gig in under 12-months, and continued to grow to have over 500,000 readers a month, with multiple 6-figure revenue and 5 staff. Then she did it all again at KateMcKibbin.com (yes, formerly known as Secret Bloggers' Business), which Kate started in 2014 and since then she has been lucky enough to help over 3,000 bloggers, coaches and infopreneurs to create profitable business doing what they love. It’s been a nutty few weeks for me because, in case you hadn’t heard, I exited my corporate job earlier this year. If you don’t know the story, you should enroll in our emails where you can get the latest and greatest stories and additional content from us delivered to your door (well, virtual door). I then started my own consulting business, not really knowing what to expect. But after I started telling people what I was up to, I have been flooded with inquiries and I’m overwhelmed with emotion and hope these days. I also have been getting a huge dose of inspiration from our own guests, which has been incredibly cathartic for me, including the guest we have today, of whom I’m a total fangirl... Anne Mahlum.
About Anne Mahlum
Anne M. Mahlum is a female entrepreneur who knows how to create and build with purpose… and she knows how to do it quickly. She is currently the Founder, Owner and CEO of a fast-growing boutique fitness company she founded in DC in 2013 called [solidcore] In just under 5 years, Anne has grown her company to 36 locations (entirely corporately owned) with more than 100,000 clients, including Michelle Obama. [solidcore] has studios in DC, Virginia, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Florida, Indiana, New York, Texas, Atlanta, Minneapolis, North Dakota, Chicago and Michigan. In late 2017, Anne brought on Peterson Partners as a minority investor to help take the company to close to 100 locations in the next two years. She has received notable media attention for her success as a woman entrepreneur and her business acumen, including features in The Washington Post and The Washington Business Journal.
Prior to [solidcore], Anne was the CEO of Back on My Feet (BoMF), a non-profit organization she founded in Philadelphia in 2007 that uses the power of running to change the way those experiencing homelessness see themselves so they can make real change in their lives, which includes employment and independent housing. In addition to Philadelphia, the organization now has chapters in Baltimore, Washington D.C., Boston, Chicago, Dallas,Indianapolis, Atlanta, New York City, Austin and Los Angeles. Anne led BoMF to become a $6.5M privately-funded organization with staff of 48, thousands of volunteers and hundreds of members. Anne's vision for Back on My Feet is simple, yet bold - to help as many people as possible, in the most efficient way possible, redefine themselves so they can redefine their life and, just as important - change the perception of homelessness on a global scale.
Anne’s work with Back on My Feet has been featured countless times in both local and national media. In 2012, Anne hosted a documentary for MTV called The Break on youth homelessness and she was recently featured in a book, called 50 Everyday Heroes. Anne has been named ABC world News Person of the Week, a CNN Hero, New Yorker of the Week, a top 40 under 40 individual by both Philadelphia and Washington DC’s Business Journal.
Anne is a motivational speaker and regularly speaks at corporate events, academic institutions and conferences on numerous topics including, leadership, being bold, finding your happiness, the business behind starting a nonprofit, and social change.
She is originally from Bismarck, North Dakota and currently lives in Washington, DC. She has completed 11 marathons, including one on every continent.

Wed, 01 May 2019 - 1h 08min - 62 - EP 61: A Toast to HERstory: How Dr. Nicola Nice has Shaken Up the Beverage World
I have one of the most fun episodes I have recorded in awhile, not because the interview itself was a blast (which it very much was!) but because the process that I took to get this guest reminded me of how sometimes you have to trust your intuition and let things unfold. I actually found this next guest, Dr. Nicola Nice, through a friend that I have been collaborating with on another project. She and I are both pro-female and want to see smart women support other women. She mentioned Pomp and Whimsy to me and after doing some research decided to reach out to Nicola on LinkedIn, which lead to this inspiring interview. This interview is a reminder that someone else’s ignorance can be your opportunity, and Dr. Nice certainly embodies that in her story and her journey.
About Dr. Nicola Nice:
Founded by Dr. Nicola Nice, a trained sociologist, self-confessed cocktail obsessive, and advisor to some of world’s top spirits companies, Pomp & Whimsy is a cordial style gin inspired by the female culinary writers and home brewers of the Victorian era. In an industry where women are rarely given center stage, Nicola is bringing fancy, modernity, and even a touch of femininity, to this wonderful old world spirit. Pomp & Whimsy brings modern sensibilities to the tradition of gin making, by infusing classically distilled gin with a delightfully flavorful botanical liqueur. Connect with Dr. Nicola Nice:

Wed, 17 Apr 2019 - 53min - 60 - EP 59: Trusting & Following Your Vision with Lauren Nolan-Sellers
We’ve got a fantastic episode for you all this week, featuring Philly’s own Lauren Nolan-Sellers. Lauren was a school teacher but quickly found herself staring out her classroom window, feeling like she was missing out on the world. After having a life-altering event where Lauren almost died, she decided NOW was her time to follow her vision. She dug into her desire to do interior design and the rest has now become history. As Lauren says during our interview, “life presents you with opportunity and you have the chance to rise and meet it, or not.”
About Lauren Nolan-Sellers
Awarding-winning interior decorator, Lauren Nolan-Sellers exploded onto the scene in 2012 co-founding Trust the Vision Decor, a residential design firm based out of Greater Philadelphia, PA. She, along with her partner Wendy, have imparted their unique design sense and straight forward business systems to create a flawless experience serving clients up and down the east coast.
Since the inception of Trust the Vision Decor, the pair has sky-rocketed to success with a client list that includes celebrities, media personalities, and professional athletes. Lauren has become one the premier designers in their region and amassed over 30,000 followers on Facebook while continuing to demonstrate exponential growth appearing in local, regional, and national media outlets including articles in Philadelphia Magazine, a segment on Fox's Good Day Philadelphia, and a profile in Curve, a national women's magazine.
As an actively working interior design professional, Lauren continues to find success taking on new clients and large scale projects. In experiencing her immense growth, she searched for a way to "pay it forward" and help other designers/ decorators gain a massive head start in their own businesses. This search culminated in the formulation of Aspiring Designers, a comprehensive program for designers and decorators that teaches them to implement Lauren's world class business systems and strategies so they can catapult themselves to success. This all-encompassing program nick-named the "Design Business in a Box" pulls the curtain back and teaches you the exact systems Lauren uses so that you can live the life you want and create a sustainable, profitable design business.
The mission is simple: To help designers and decorators grow & scale a design business that consistently generates 5-figures or more a month without sacrificing your time and freedom even if you've got no idea where to begin.
Lauren and her wife Wendy share two children, ages 6 and 9 months. They reside in Bucks County but are in the process of remodeling and creating their dream home in South Jersey.

Wed, 10 Apr 2019 - 55min - 59 - EP 58: Bohemian Bosslady Kathryn Morrison on Exiting Corporate, Taking the Leap into the Unknown
If you’re listening to our show it’s usually because you have an entrepreneurial spirit, and are seeking stories and content that feeds that part of you. Many of you may still be in corporate jobs and grinding away, but know that there is something better...more fulfilling...and more rewarding than what you’re doing at your corporate job. Some of you may actually have a hunch as to what that is because you have a hobby or side hustle that you love, but are too scared or aren’t sure whether you can make a living from it, even though that’s really what your heart wants. Today’s episode will make you want to take the leap after you hear Kathryn’s story about how she built Bohemian Bosslady and exited corporate to live a more fulfilling and intentional life.
About Kathryn Morrison:
Kathryn grew up as your stereotypical "smart kid" and regurgitated information really well on standardized tests. And while the external validation that came from that felt pretty good for the ego, she always had a more creative, bohemian spirit. After college she honored that spirit and took off to live in Namibia for a year as a volunteer teacher. But returning home afterwards the Great Recession was in full force, so her fearful lizard brain mapped her straight into the corporate world, then spending a number of years in business strategy and development in tech companies between San Francisco and Austin. But despite the cushy salary, there was always a gnawing feeling that she wanted something more, better...different. She tried to cover the feeling with social media scrolling and the nightly glasses of wine, but after having children she realized how out of integrity she was with telling them to go after her dreams, when she had abandoned hers. After crafting a life and business fully in alignment with her values and priorities, she now helps others do the same. Connect with Kathryn Morrison:

Wed, 27 Mar 2019 - 31min - 57 - EP 56: Tina Caye: Deconstructing and Reclaiming “Entitlement” for Everyone
ina Caye’s life and career path has been nothing short of adventurous. She came from humble beginnings in a tiny town of 750 people in Southern Illinois. Tina left to attend Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) in Savannah, GA, where she studied Motion Media Design and Dance. She started out freelancing and tending bar while doing odd-job animations and logo designs living in Savannah and then embarked upon her next grand adventure – Hawaii. While there, Tina worked for a green energy startup and a small advertising agency as Creative Director and fell in love with the job. She has been working in that capacity since. She has tried it all, from advertising to startups, a healthcare IT firm, government consulting firm and now financial services.
She has recently spent some time digging into her belief that fear can be the main driving factor in your life and as long as you're aware of it, you can make leaps forward in spite of that fear. As Oprah might say "The thing I know for sure..." is that everyone has one thing they are uniquely qualified to bring to this world and share. She has come to discover that hers is her story and core beliefs. Tina believes if we remain curious and passionate, life becomes a story worth telling. She gets a real rush out of finding people’s hidden passions and talents and empowering them to do their best work. Leadership is something she takes seriously and enabling change through authenticity is a real passion. She has some fun things up my sleeves in the coming months and years and can't wait to share it!
Tina believes life is meant to be an adventure and that settling for less than your dreams is not an option.

This week our show is sponsored by Frame it Easy. I found Frame It Easy last year when I was searching for custom framing that was simple and affordable. I had literally searched the “usual suspects” but still felt like I wasn’t finding what I needed and wanted for the right price. Everything was so expensive!
As I was searching, I found Frame It Easy, where you can upload your own photo, digital print, or piece of digital art that they then frame for you as well. I am happy to share this interview with a couple of cool entrepreneurs who I met through a Lyft ride! You never know when you can meet someone inspiring.
Christopher Rivera and Will Larsson are the co-founding officers of Bambusea, which is a sun loving, beach living, LOCAL sunglasses company. It started about 14 years ago when Will and Chris crossed paths for the first time. Interestingly enough, they didn’t actually hit it off like many would believe. They both can be stubborn and persuasive (a dangerous combination), but just like anything in life that takes time and dedication, they worked on it and ultimately forged a friendship. Chris and Will translated the same values that they built their friendship on over to their first business!
With a combined 30 years of hospitality background, they are very service oriented and pride themselves on customizing buyers’ bamboo shades so that they are custom etched wrapped with their “laser”, a game-changing differentiator in the industry. Also, the shades are backed with a 30 day guarantee and are competitively priced, which is a “winning” relationship for their fans. Connect with Bambusea Shades:

Wed, 30 Jan 2019 - 28min - 49 - EP 48: Bonnibelle Chukwuneta on Learning to Grow in the Face of Disappointment
I am honored to share this lovely interview with my new friend Bonnibelle! She has a fantastic story and lots of inspiration for all of us, so please enjoy!
Bonnibelle Chukwuneta (Bonnie) was born and raised in California by Nigerian immigrants and is the eldest of four. She was raised in a fairly traditional home and grew up around sports (soccer, basketball, and volleyball) and stern reminders of the importance of academic excellence. She went to college, planning on becoming a nurse or doctor as many Nigerian parents want for their children, but it wasn't for her. Bonnie changed majors to French and got a job to gain work experience and independence. Within months, she was in her own apartment and living independently. She worked her way up the company to supervisory roles and took a job relocation opportunity to St. Pete, FL to expand a growing company within two years.
Bonnie excelled for nearly three years, ultimately becoming the operations manager. Due to unforeseen circumstances, she ended up leaving corporate and has since started blogging (a passion for her) about St Petersburg, FL, which you can check out at belleintheburg.com.
Bonnibelle’s goal is to be self-sufficient, be her own boss, and travel the world. Thankfully, it's 2019 and that goal is attainable now more than ever.

Wed, 23 Jan 2019 - 56min - 48 - EP 47: Finding Peace & Presence After the Pain, with Biet Simkin
This week we have a total rockstar guest for you: Biet Simkin! Biet has an incredible story of trauma, discovery and growth and we totally bonded during this interview. I felt like we’d been lifelong friends, and hopefully you will too.
Please note that there is some adult language and content in the episode, so please put headphones on if there are sensitive ears nearby. Also, Biet leads us in a gorgeous meditation (complete with her original music) towards the end of the recording. If you’re listening while driving or operating machinery, you must pause the interview at that point and only participate in the meditation when you are in a safe place.
About Biet
Biet Simkin is the Founder of Center of the Cyclone, an immersive experience that weaves meditation, self inquiry, art, music and fashion, offering an explosive experience. She is inspired by the rare and almost impossible task of entering into the present moment and creates this experience globally. After 30 years of study in the field Biet’s feeling was that the world of the intellect, fashion and art needed spirituality, and the world of spirituality was often missing the mark and needed some vanity and fire. Colliding these two worlds, Biet has created events with MoMA, Lululemon, SoulCycle, Summit Series, Vice, Free People, Sundance Film Festival, Bonnaroo Festival, Soho House, Mind Body Green, 1 Hotels, Neuehouse, Wanderlust Festival, Adidas, Samsung, Sony and more. Currently Biet has a book about the laws of meditation entitled "Don't Just Sit There!" to be released in Spring of 2019 with Simon & Schuster. She is the resident and in-house Meditation Leader at all 1 Hotels with in-room content across all properties. Biet is also the voice of Expectful, a meditation app for pregnant expecting mothers. Meditation with Biet is different in that it is more emotional, her work takes you through the emotional, intellectual, instinctive and moving centers to get to a place of equanimity and joy. Through private one on ones, corporate groups, parties, speaking engagements and pop-ups in museums and art galleries, Biet is bringing this big work into the world and helping raise consciousness from the outside in. Her work is also unique as it is bringing the sound of her music into the meditation experiences and giving music a new venue. Her latest album ‘The Lunar’ debuted September 2015. Her work has been featured in Harper’s Bazaar, ELLE, Vogue, The Observer, TIME Magazine, Forbes, The London Times and more!
My favorite moments and takeaways from our conversation:
Biet grew up unconventionally - a child of Russian Jews who fled their communist country, Biet was their “freedom child”
Biet’s father was a spiritual teacher so spirituality was something Biet grew up around
Biet went on to live an unconventional life as well when she pursued a music career - it was very much sex, drugs, rock and roll for Biet
During her time as a musician, Biet used alcohol and later harder drugs to get into a spiritual space, as her life actually felt very empty
The deaths of family members, and particularly her father, escalated a life change for Biet that made her re-evaluate her path
Biet felt that the universe was asking her to continue her father’s work as a spiritual teacher….and so she did
In the beginning, Biet was working random side jobs for cash while she asked friends if anyone wanted to be coached/guided by her and to just “pay what they want to pay her” as a means to start her work as a spiritual teacher
Eventually, Biet was hosting spiritual events at well known places like Art Basel, Sundance Film Festival, Soul Cycle, and with brands like Adidas, Sony, Samsung
Biet recently had a baby girl, which brought with it its own challenges, but she is loving motherhood so far
Biet’s has a new book, “Don’t Just Sit There!” is to be released this spring
Biet is also seeking new coaching clients

Wed, 16 Jan 2019 - 1h 18min - 47 - EP 46: Getting Lit Up: How a Passion for Cartooning Became a Career with Adam Staffaroni
After a lovely break for the holidays, we are back for our first episode of 2019! This week, we have Adam Staffaroni, who actually went to school with me when I was growing up. Small world! Adam’s company, Einhorn’s Epic Productions, has launched a brand new scripted mystery podcast called Lethal Lit, which has been a smash hit and was recently featured in the New York Times. I was so impressed by Lethal Lit that I just had to get Adam on the show to find out his story. It turns out he had a very inspiring one! I hope you enjoy this episode, because it’s all about following your dreams.
About Adam Staffaroni
Adam is the co-founder & chief creative officer of Einhorn’s Epic Productions, leading new IP (intellectual property) development for the company. Previously, Adam was the senior editor in charge of the Roar imprint at Lion Forge Entertainment, where he developed new IP for the children's and teen markets while also managing notable titles including Saved by the Bell, Punky Brewster, Care Bears, and Madballs. Prior to Lion forge, Adam relocated to Los Angeles to launch the Kaboom! imprint at Boom! Studios, where he was responsible for the Adventure Time and Peanuts programs as well as projects with New Yorker cartoonist Shannon Wheeler and acclaimed musicians Coheed & Cambria and Daniel Johnston. Adam began his career in the licensing group at DC Entertainment after earning his AB from Dartmouth College and his MFA from the Center for Cartoon Studies.

Wed, 09 Jan 2019 - 1h 16min - 46 - EP 45: Looking Back and Looking Ahead
It’s hard to believe we’re coming to the end of 2018. In our final episode of this year, we shared some of what we’ve learned on our crazy podcasting journey so far. It’s been a wonderful year of growth and positive change for both of us, and we’re excited to see what next year brings. If you’ve been along for the whole ride so far, or if you’re just now getting aboard, we’re so glad you’re here.
GOAL MAGIC will return with brand new episodes starting January 9th. See you then!

Wed, 19 Dec 2018 - 24min - 45 - EP 44: Melting the Ice (Sometimes Change is Invisible)
I’m pleased to share a mini solo episode about the nature of positive change today! Cynthia was busy interviewing an AMAZING guest (stay tuned in 2019), so I grabbed the mic and shared some of my recent learnings from a truly excellent book: Atomic Habits by James Clear.
I’ll explain why change is often invisible for a long time when we make a positive change in our habits. If you’ve ever given up on a new habit because you weren’t seeing results quick enough, this episode is for you.
Hint: Meaningful change is usually very slow and we often quit before we can get to the good stuff.
Here’s to helping you melt the ice in your life!
Onward, Brennen

Wed, 12 Dec 2018 - 09min - 44 - EP 43: Healthy Parenting With Claudia Morandi
Claudia Morandi is the mastermind behind Wholesome Mom a blog where she shares her experience, tips, and tricks for getting her children to eat healthy and stay active, while also helping parents who may need some extra support getting themselves back in shape.
Originally from Venezuela, Claudia’s inspiration for Wholesome Mom came from watching her children adapt to the American lifestyle, which included more processed food options and less activity. But as her children started adopting some of the American culture and ways, Claudia started talking to them about how food can affect their health - both physically and emotionally - and realized that she was truly passionate about food and wellness.
As Claudia noticed what worked with her children to get them to eat and behave better, and what didn’t - she saw this as an opportunity to teach others how they can help their families live healthier lives. Claudia is now dedicated to helping others with children live healthier lives through her business Wholesome Mom.
Prior to Wholesome Mom, Claudia lived in Venezuela with her husband and 2 daughters. She was the owner of Fibras Clothing, a fitness clothing line for women, which was widely successful. Her line was picked up by a retailer but sadly, Claudia’s political situation was not ideal, as she built her dream in the middle of a political crisis. She and her family sought asylum in the US in 2015, and has been here since.

In this “best of” episode, Cynthia reflects on Thanksgiving and tells the story about how she landed this big interview with author Maureen Sherry before we had published even a single episode of GOAL MAGIC. It’s a pretty cool story of having faith and reaching out. We hope you enjoy the backstory, and also the wonderful interview with Maureen Sherry!

Wed, 28 Nov 2018 - 55min - 42 - EP 41: Cynthia Breaks Free, Part 2
Cynthia and I recorded this episode the week of Thanksgiving. Cynthia updated us on her big move to Tampa, Florida, and we dug deep into how in some ways she had to “break her own heart” to make the change. We both decided that it helps to have a little (or a lot) of faith when choosing the road less traveled. Meanwhile, we are grateful to you for being here for our journey!

Liberty sent me a box of bee somebody bars, and folks they have got to be the best-smelling soaps in the world. Homemade with all-natural ingredients and pure essential oils, her oatmeal and lavender soap is my absolute favorite, but I also love her prickly pear and rosemary & peppermint scents. Tue, 06 Nov 2018 - 35min - 39 - EP 38: Adorable Cat Problems
This episode is a bit different from what we normally do! It’s a little lighter and more personal, just so you can get to know us better. One thing you may not know about us is that we both have pet cats that we adore.
Here, we tell the stories of how we came to bring our rescue cats home. We also share our cat problems in the hopes that we can one day get the amazing Jackson Galaxy on the show.
You will learn about:
Bella, who has a “cocaine claw”, is possibly addicted to catnip and pets Cynthia’s hair in the middle of the night for unknown reasons Oliver, who is “big-boned” and throws things on the ground when he’s hungry (which is always) and Mini Me, who loves to take walks on a leash and whose favorite foods are pizza, fries and popcornJust to make you laugh, here’s a bonus video of cats stealing pizza.
We hope you enjoy this heartwarming special episode!

P.S. In the show, we talked about a kitten shampoo that Brennen loves. It’s called Groomax Gentle Cat & Kitten Shampoo. Unfortunately, it looks like it may no longer be sold. Boo!

Tue, 30 Oct 2018 - 39min - 38 - EP 37: Sarah Zero on Becoming a Lady Boss, Part 2
Sarah Zero is the founder of Wellstruck, a branding studio that specializes in brand therapy, design, and websites for businesses owned by good people. She has a degree in Visual Communications and over 12 years experience in branding — including two years of teaching it at the college level.
Sarah also created Wellstruck Lady Boss, a series of intimate roundtable events for entrepreneurs in Philadelphia. Each event has space for just 12 women, and over 500 women have attended since it began.
As for life outside of work, Sarah lives in Delaware with her husband and pup. She does some pretty normal stuff like collecting plants, planning travel based on food, and watching movies with a strong female lead on Netflix. And sometimes she does some less normal stuff like foraging for mushrooms to make spore prints.
Sarah’s clients say she’s “refreshingly unpretentious” and her husband says she “makes fun happen.”
My favorite moments and insights from this interview:
Nothing seems random - Sarah ended up in visual communications orientation at her college rather than the one she was supposed to be in - it forever changed her path forward!
Sarah found the courage to leave corporate because of her experiences prior, where she was let go from her job and proceeded to get clients in order to pay her bills until she could find new work. She learned being an entrepreneur wasn’t that scary!
Sarah’s bout with cancer most resonated with me - it slowed her down and she had to stop working for awhile, which was scary. But her resilience coming off that is what shines through for me.
Sarah plans travel around food with her husband - how fun is that??
She makes spore prints from mushrooms, who knew? I loved seeing what spore prints were all about so she and I are now inst buddies. Follow her as well @heysarahzero

Tue, 16 Oct 2018 - 32min - 35 - EP 34: Mary Alice Duff on Creating a Path that Fits Your Passions
I’m thrilled to share the first part of a two-part interview with Mary Alice Duff! Mary Alice is the owner of Alice Alexander, a size-inclusive, ethically-made women’s apparel startup based in Philadelphia with both an online and brick and mortar presence. Started in September 2017, Alice Alexander offers bold, yet accessible pieces to the modern-day woman in sustainable fabrics and inclusive sizes, ranging from 0-28.
Prior to launching her own business, Mary Alice was a nonprofit executive with dual degrees in social work and law and social policy. Frustrated with the lack of high quality clothing in her size and growing increasingly aware of the negative environmental and human impacts the fashion industry was creating, Mary Alice started sewing her own clothes, consciously building a self-made wardrobe piece by piece.
Realizing there was a business in her new sewing hobby, Duff enrolled in fashion design school at Philadelphia’s MADE Institute, where she balanced taking classes and working full-time. In May of 2017, Duff left a successful career in the nonprofit sector to launch Alice Alexander.
In June 2018, with the crowdfunded launch of their second collection, Alice Alexander opened a brick and mortar location and combined production studio in the East Falls neighborhood of Philadelphia.
My favorite moments from my interview with Mary Alice and my biggest takeaways were:
Mary Alice was a wildly successful and educated professional with 2 master’s degrees but that didn’t stop her from pursuing what got her up every morning, even when “what got her up every AM” shifted
Mary Alice’s transition from social work to fashion seemed like a huge leap but she carried through the core threads of what was important to her and what she was good at to make it happen
If you’re paying for a shirt what you’re paying for a burrito, your clothes are probably unethically made
Having a partner who whole-heartedly supports your dreams was a key component for Mary Alice to be able to make the leap she did
Sometimes, having BIG CRAZY dreams that you aim to achieve, in the face of people questioning or laughing at them, is the biggest driver to achieving them (and showing everyone that they were wrong)

Tue, 02 Oct 2018 - 32min - 34 - EP 33: Liz Kimball on Embracing Your Creative Voice
I am so excited to share this interview that I recorded with the one and only Liz Kimball. Liz is a creator, writer, director, speaker, and guide. Having spent over two decades as a dancer and actor, she performed all over the country, and received critical acclaim and multiple awards for her performances.
Now she devotes herself to creating, writing, and directing women-centered stories of all kinds. She is the “Chief Enthusiasm Officer of Creator Goddess Warrior Queens and nonlinear ducks,” and she supports successful creatives and professionals in playing bigger and doing the work they were born to do.
Liz is also the founder of The Collective for Women Creators, a sisterhood meets mastermind for WOMEN CREATORS ready to make next-level leaps, actualize their visions, and radically support other women in doing the same.
It’s hard to summarize this interview about creativity, so just go ahead and listen to it. And then maybe listen to it again.
Top Quotes & Takeaways from my interview with Liz Kimball:
She grew up in a wonderfully creative home, so it was sort of inevitable that she’d become an artist
Ballet was her first love but it came with some pretty intense negative aspects, especially around body image and eating disorders
Liz loves acting for the immediacy and the thrill of opening up in front of an audience, but she came to feel like it wasn’t working for her as a career. She realized she was working incredibly hard to get something she didn’t actually want. She also sought the ability to have more control her over her own creative projects.
Liz is super intense in her passions… she loves to go all-in.
“I don’t know one person who’s going it alone, and that’s going well for them.”
“A work of art is not complete unless it lands on something or someone.”
“Angst is not a reason that you’re doing something wrong, but actually a sign that there’s a next step for you and you can just trust that the angst is leading you somewhere. ”
“There’s a great deal of energy that goes into hiding parts of yourself.”
Why it’s wonderful to have a multifaceted identity.
Why the 10,000-hour focus on just ONE THING rule might not be the best thing for creative people.
How to deal with the “tiny terrorist” in your mind.
“Doubt doesn’t come up unless you’ve found something important that really matters.”
“Just say yes to the impulse of right now and take it to its next place.”
And so much more!

Tue, 25 Sep 2018 - 51min - 33 - EP 32: Sarah DeGeorge on Getting Unstuck as a Freelancer, Part 2
We are thrilled to share the second half of Cynthia’s two-part interview with digital marketer and entrepreneur Sarah DeGeorge!
Cynthia's key moments and takeaways from the interview were:
You have to take care of yourself before you can take care of everyone else
It’s ok to be vulnerable ask others for help and support when you need it. Don’t let pride stop you from reaching out.
It’s important not to compare yourself to other people’s highlight reels on social media. SO many people struggle with that. It just makes you feel bad, and it’s not a fair comparison.
When Sarah’s dad got a serious diagnosis, she felt internal pressure to maybe work too hard, and she ended up feeling a lot of burnout.
It’s good for freelancers to avoid doing work outside of set work hours. Sarah ended up taking her work emails off of her phone so that her time off would actually be restful.
Sarah explains why she decided to take a leap and undergo a re-branding process for her business.
Why even established professionals sometimes feel imposter syndrome. Connect with Sarah DeGeorge:

Tue, 18 Sep 2018 - 36min - 32 - EP 31: Sarah DeGeorge on Getting Unstuck as a Freelancer
We are happy to share the first half of this two-part interview with digital marketer and entrepreneur Sarah DeGeorge. Sarah talks about the unusual path she took after college and why she continues to have resolve in taking that path. We were blown away at what happened that caused Sarah to have to re-evaluate what mattered to her in life and find her way back to balance.
Cynthia's favorite takeaways from the interview were:
Your body will tell you to slow down when it needs to, and everyone needs to heed that warning when it happens. Sarah’s bout with shingles enables her to enter a new phase of her entrepreneurship as a result of her illness
Doing what you’re good at doesn’t always mean you should make money from it. Sometimes, doing what feels good/right for YOU is the best path forward
Sometimes, refining the scope of your skills and really honing in on something that you’re not only good at but that you enjoy is a means to driving more business. Although it may not feel that way because you are paring down what you focus on, the riches are often in very specified yet desirable areas of expertise Connect with Sarah DeGeorge:

Tue, 04 Sep 2018 - 34min - 30 - EP 29: Lisa Lord on How Millennials are Changing Our World for the Better, Part 1
Hey everyone and welcome to the GOAL MAGIC podcast, where it’s our mission to get you unstuck. Today I got to interview Lisa Lord. If you may not recall or hadn’t heard heard, I interviewed Lisa a few months ago about her transition from corporate into professional coaching. Lisa and I chat about millennials and where her fascination with them came from, as well as how she is rocking the corporate world by changing the conversation about Millennials. I was really surprised to hear what Lisa uncovered about Millennials and their self-expectations.
Since there was so much to talk about, we split this episode into two parts. Here's the first part!
Top Takeaways from my interview with Lisa:
Instead of learning how to “manage” Millennials, corporate needs to learn to better tap into their talents as a more efficient way to use their resources
Millennials are able to focus on doing something they’re passionate about because, like Maslow’s hierarchy of needs, so many of our needs are met AND there are a plethora of options to make money...which means Millennials can have the option to decide where they spend their professional energy and can craft a life on their own terms
Millennials have a lot of self expectations, driven from their use of technology, from things being “on-demand” and from their parents telling them “they can do anything” (which ended up being self-defeating because there are *so* many choices!)
Millennials are going to change our society and especially corporate in so many positive ways - it’s corporate’s responsibility to harness that energy and talent

Tue, 07 Aug 2018 - 41min - 26 - EP 25: Cheryl Rice on Transforming Pain & Loss into Growth
I am so happy to share this interview with Cheryl Rice, who spent many years in corporate before stepping out and beginning her coaching practice as well as her You Matter Marathon. She talks about her pivotal moment when literally her body was speaking to her to make a life shift - I was shocked at what happened that caused Cheryl to reflect on her life and ultimately make the career switch.
About Cheryl Rice:
Cheryl Rice works with high potential leaders at every level. She has been working with clients to improve individual, team and executive performance for over 20 years. Cheryl’s speaking, and coaching clients include: Pfizer, Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, Penn Medicine, AstraZeneca Pharmaceuticals, Drexel University, Campbells Soup, and the Wharton School.
Cheryl has held significant positions in the healthcare, financial services and technology industries. Past corporate positions include Director of Organization Development for AstraZeneca Pharmaceuticals, AVP of Leadership Development at ACE International, and leadership consulting roles at CIGNA, NovaCare, and SMS (now Siemens).
Cheryl is especially gifted in helping women cultivate their leadership presence, develop confidence, and establish a healthy and mindful approach to work and life. She is also the author of the inspiring memoir, Where Have I Been All My Life? Additionally, her essays and commentaries have appeared in local and national publications including the Philadelphia Inquirer, the Chicago Tribune, Cure Today, and Maria Shriver’s Blog, Architects of Change.
In 2016 Cheryl founded the You Matter Marathon (no running required!), a global kindness and community building program in 59 countries.

Additionally, Cheryl is an ICF certified coach, has a certificate in Applied Positive Psychology and taught classes in organization change at local universities.
Highlights from Cheryl's interview:
A case of hives revealed to Cheryl how unhappy she was in her corporate life After she quit her job she felt untethered and unnerved Cheryl had to create structures in her life to feel centered She kept hustling and doing piecemeal work She was doing a lot of journaling and created "monthly reports' for her goals She started training for a half marathon to reframe her view of herself She also worked with a coach Started to think of herself more as a business owner It's really important to honor your relationships and keep in touch with people What goes up, goes down... and what goes down goes up It helps to replace anxiety with curiosity and confidence Cheryl believes in planting seeds with people "Where can I add value in a way that makes me feel alive" "Find your tribe and love on them, and you will get love back" The sudden death of her mom led to great sadness, but also insights She mined her grief to grow as a person When you feel stuck, try shaking your body All about how Cheryl founded the You Matter Marathon (no running required) and so much more!Connect with Cheryl:

Tue, 31 Jul 2018 - 53min - 25 - EP 24: Jennifer Buxton on Getting Unstuck Through Blogging and Travel
I am thrilled to share this lovely interview with Jennifer Buxton, who started her career as an educator, then transitioned into blogging as The Real Posh Mom, which eventually lead her to her work empowering women as well as being a content strategist. Jennifer’s journey took her and her family to Montenegro. She talks about what it was like to overhaul her life - she revealed something to me in that part of the interview that made me think about my own life and how I define it. Strap yourself in for this interview because it rocked my world!
Highlights from Jennifer's interview:
Jennifer started blogging organically while she was bored at home with her young child The blog grew as she started responding to reader questions and comments She was determined not to lose herself as a person after becoming a mom Eventually a company flew her out and paid Jennifer (along with other bloggers) to get a spa treatment She started presenting herself as a sort of freelance marketer for companies who wanted to reach her audience Began to feel more like a full-on businesswoman and less like a mom who had a blog Started to become a brand ambassador for companies she really loved She is not a big fan of unhealthy competitiveness, especially among women "Comparison is the thief of joy" She made it her mission to empower women and help them find their voices She and her husband were working too hard though, and they needed to make a change Her husband was feeling like every day was Groundhog's Day Eventually they sold almost all of their possessions and moved to Montenegro Once a year, sit back and evaluate what you're doing in life Slowing down is not a bad thing She and her husband ended up opening a co-working space in Montenegro "Never feel stuck because you always have choices!"Connect with Jennifer:

Tue, 24 Jul 2018 - 49min - 24 - EP 23: Robert Farrington on Turning Your Side Hustle into Your Main Hustle
What’s up everyone and welcome to the GOAL MAGIC podcast, where it’s our mission to help you get unstuck and get going! Today I got to interview Robert Farrington, who is a Millennial money expert and founder of thecollegeinvestor.com. Robert’s path is a fascinating one—starting with his time working as a manager at Target while blogging on the side, to making $45,000 a month (!) on his blog. How’d he do it? Robert gives us a behind-the-scenes look at his journey in this episode! Top Takeaways from Robert:
Robert always saw his blog The College Investor as a side hustle (until recently) He kept going because he loved it It took him a long time to start making money from the project Things started happening when he began networking with other bloggers Industry conferences really helped as influencers started sharing his content He learned to listen to readers and produce content they wanted, rather than what he wanted Think about your ROI before investing in an expensive degree "Show me where you spend your money and time, and I'll show you what you value" Really look at your household expenses closely. Chances are you can reduce them Look for ways to earn more money in your spare time It's important to challenge assumptions about success If you have an unconventional lifestyle, some people may be judgmentalConnect with Robert:

Tue, 17 Jul 2018 - 51min - 23 - EP 22: Matt Lambert on Chasing Your Passions
I hope you enjoy this interview that I recorded with Matt Lambert, who is a social innovator and strategy consultant. Matt has had an interesting career and life journey that had him move from the US to Montenegro with his family. In one of his corporate jobs, Matt was urged to find what he loves and then craft a role around that, which had a powerful influence on how he viewed his career path from then on. There are tons of takeaways in this episode as Mike shares his hard-won insights on how to get unstuck.
Episode Highlights:
Why leaders need to recognize and support people's unique strengths How you can create a job for yourself instead of just accepting what's out there Why it's ok to feel discontent with the different stages of life How it's good to challenge systems and ways of thinking that aren't working for us If you're going to challenge a system, you have to understand the system How living in a foreign country teaches humility "Just keep swimming." Failure means you're trying... it's ok to make mistakes Don't let an old story from your childhood hold you back from pursuing your dreams You can always change and do something differentConnect with Matt: Look for him on social media: @musingmr https://mattlambert.me/

Tue, 10 Jul 2018 - 43min - 22 - EP 21: Exercise as a Way to Get Unstuck
Cynthia and I sat down for a really nice chat about how we use exercise to keep us unstuck. We shared our favorite workouts, from very easy to very, very hard!
In the course of the conversation, I opened up about how I've fought depression for much of my life. Hard cardio workouts have gotten me up and out of the darkness, many many times.
Here are some of the highlights:
Cynthia has been walking a lot more... and loving it Twenty minutes of cardio per day helps Brennen stave off depression Cynthia does super hard pilates workouts when her back can handle it Hard workouts can shift your mindset in terms of what you think is possible for yourself Rather than measuring your progress by how you look, try focusing on how you feel and what you can do When you look in the mirror, be grateful to be alive rather than criticizing your own appearance The best reason to exercise is to show yourself some love!If you haven't worked out in a while, we challenge you to get back in the habit, starting today... and then every day after that.

Tue, 03 Jul 2018 - 21min - 21 - EP 20: How to Keep Your Promises to Yourself
One of the worst feelings in the world is telling yourself you were going do something and then letting yourself down and not doing it. It could be a vow to exercise or send that important email to a client or apply for that inspiring new job you really want. Breaking your promises to yourself is just the worst kind of letdown right? It leads to negative self-talk and poor self-esteem over time.
In this episode, we chat about our ways of keeping promises to ourselves and others. Cynthia also shares some details about how she got started on her new wellness business.
We recorded this back in the dead of winter in Philadelphia, but hopefully it's warm wherever you're listening!

Tue, 26 Jun 2018 - 28min - 20 - EP 19: Lisa Lord on Leading a Life of Inspiration
Lisa Lord is a dynamic and inspirational speaker and executive coach who developed her point of view initially as an executive in Human Resources working for Fortune 500 corporations.

Lisa has helped clients to address disconnects due to generational differences, changes in employment practices, and a lack of self-awareness. When individuals discover how to let their strengths shine, amazing transitions occur.
Key quotes and takeaways from this awesome interview:
"I've really learned to pay attention to what inspires me." "I'm the kind of person who was always comfortable making changes." "As you're discovering what you do, you end up learning a lot about yourself." After she left corporate life, Lisa started having lunches and coffees with everyone she knew. Finally she got the advice to just start doing a thing she thought she might love, and do it for free, while paying attention to how it made her feel. She tried to do more things that she found inspiring. She's a huge fan of Audible.com. When your brain is engaged in something creative and inspirational, the rest of your brain lights up. Cynthia's big positive shift happened when she realized corporate life wasn't her "everything." How it's totally normal to not know what your passion is. What does a good life look like? What would it feel like? Key question to ask: What it something you did that made you feel really, really proud? Just because you're good at something, doesn't mean you love it. Telling people that they can do anything, DOES add a lot of pressure to someone. If you have a bunch of side hustles, you don't necessarily need to pick just one. Look for a "money job" that will give you the flexibility to find your dream job. Try the Gallup Strength Finder. What to tell people who might not understand your quest for an inspiring career. What we should tell our kids instead of "you can do anything." Book Recommendations: Brene Brown's Daring Greatly and Amy Cuddy's Presence The key to inspiration is that you'll know if it's working in the first thirty seconds.Connect with Lisa:

Tue, 19 Jun 2018 - 53min - 19 - EP 18: How Alexis Siemons Turned her Love of Tea into a Fulfilling Career
I'm so happy to share this interview with my friend Alexis Siemons. As a tea enthusiast, Alexis writes about her steeped adventures on her website and blog, Teaspoons & Petals. She also teaches a series of culinary tea classes, and develops tea-infused recipes for restaurants.
Alexis is currently a tea consultant for La Colombe, which is one of my favorite cafes and also the place where Cynthia and I came up with the idea for GOAL MAGIC. Alexis’ recipes and stories have been published in Women’s Health, Grid Magazine and Design*Sponge… among many other publications. But above all else, Alexis is a positive and fearless entrepreneur who has turned her passion into her life’s work, and that is why she’s on the show!
Key quotes and discussion topics:
The very first post on Teaspoons & Petals Why it's important to take time to appreciate beauty The power of designing your own major The pitfalls of the advertising industry for creative people Why short-form writing is taking over the Internet "Tea is like traveling through your taste buds." Alexis recommends oolong tea as a good place to start learning about tea flavors How drinking tea can help manage stress If you're succeeding at everything, then you're probably not doing things to their fullest Why we should celebrate failures "I want to hear no a lot because that means I'm reaching out and trying to create something unique and when that yes comes along, it's going to be a great fit." The value in nurturing a community How to find your "tribe" What to do when you hit a dry spot in your business Why if it's not 100% a yes, it's a NO "My definition of success is waking up every morning and wanting to jump out of bed to go pursue your career." Tue, 12 Jun 2018 - 35min - 18 - EP 17: Ruben Vergara Meersohn on Turning Entrepreneurial Passion into Massive Success
I am delighted to share an interview I recorded with Ruben Vergara Meersohn. Ruben is a true multi-passionate entrepreneur who started out working multiple odd jobs in a pizzeria, making wine, welding steel, and also serving as a translator. Ruben eventually ventured into corporate work where he worked for a major bank. But after the suicide of his colleague while working at the bank, Ruben realized that he needed to proactively go after his dreams. He quit his banking job and pursued his passions and today he owns and runs multiple successful businesses.
Ruben is a super-talented and generous person and he had so much advice and wisdom to share in this episode, so I'm excited for you to check it out!
More about Ruben: Ruben Vergara Meersohn is a 26-year-old husband and father with a really cool day-job. He was raised in Italy and after dropping out of high-school, he kickstarted his career by working in Chianti wine production when he was fourteen years old. Early in his career, he started working for the second biggest translation company in the world, which led him to move to Australia. Later on moved to the United Kingdom to work for an Investment bank.
Ruben's entrepreneurial spirit emerged upon returning to Italy, where he launched his first business. In 2012, he decided to relocate all his businesses to Montenegro where he has been living for the past six years. He launched Wall Street International Magazine in 2011, with two partners, as an educational hub that focused on tracking cultural content and creating a high-end multimedia tool. Under his leadership, WSI Magazine has grown to over 1,000 people worldwide and 10M yearly readers. Ruben also serves on the boards of directors of several companies, including Villas Link, a luxury villas rental company, Admaiora Group, a firm that provides concierge services, and Cecchi de Rossi, a high-end fashion company that produces leather bags treated with wine. He is also the manager of a real estate investment fund.
In recent years, Ruben has ventured into business consulting and mentorship to promote positive entrepreneurship and inspire more people to seek their full potential.

Tue, 05 Jun 2018 - 41min - 17 - EP 16: Anna Goldfarb on Charting Your Own Course
Author Anna Goldfarb is one of my favorite creative people, and I'm so happy to have her as a guest on GOAL MAGIC! I first learned about Anna back when she was the editor behind the wildly popular (but now retired) dating blog Shmitten Kitten. Since then, we’ve built up a friendship based upon our shared love of writing goofy email newsletters. Just to let you know, Anna writes my favorite newsletter in the whole world and you should totally go subscribe to it at annagoldfarb.com.
Now happily married with Shmitten Kitten in her rearview mirror, Anna makes a living writing fearlessly about relationships, culture and food for publications like The New York Times, Vice and Thrillist. Anna writes with a bold and exuberant wit and she’s not afraid to offend people who might disagree with her. With titles like “What I wish I'd Known Before Moving in Together” “The Top 10 Worst Things I’ve Eaten at Trader Joe’s” and “What to Say When People Ask Why You’re Not Having Children” you can see why Anna’s articles get tons of impassioned comments from readers.
Anna is also the author of the humor memoir, Clearly, I Didn’t Think This Through: The Story of One Tall Girl’s Impulsive, Ill-Conceived, and Borderline Irresponsible Life Decisions. It’s a hilarious and heart-warming book.
We discuss these topics (and many more) in the episode:
Being intentional with your network How a creative network is different from other social networks How Anna knew her husband was "the one" How to survive as an adult living in your parents' basement The best locale for forcing yourself to write How to deal with one-star reviews online How we sometimes confuse our friends with our fans on social media The pros and cons of freelance writing The value of finding an "accountability buddy" Remember: success is not a straight line! How jealousy can lead to personal insightI hope you enjoy this episode as much as I enjoyed recording it!

Tue, 29 May 2018 - 48min - 16 - EP 15: MBA Consultant Ellin Lolis on Living Abroad and Loving Life
I'm happy to share this chat I recorded with entrepreneur Ellin Lolis. After graduating from Vanderbilt University, Ellin found herself in Sao Paolo Brazil. Ellin and I discuss what it was like for her being an ex-pat in Brazil, the highs and lows that she experienced in acclimating personally and professionally to a different country, and how some of the cultural hurdles actually pushed Ellin to start her own successful consulting business.
We also touch on how Ellin uses her coaching for students considering an MBA, and why an MBA track isn’t always the next best step. There so much to learn from Ellin’s journey and her story may make you ask yourself your own WHY’s, so you won’t want to miss one second.
We discussed these topics and many more:
The importance of delegating tasks as a business owner How entrepreneurs (especially) need to be able to say no How to respond when clients ask for a huge discount You have to trust yourself and your ability to deliver value How to convey credibility, even if you're just starting out Why money isn't always the greatest motivator for everyone Why it's critical to follow your own path and not someone else'sConnect with Ellin: http://ellinlolis.com/ LinkedIn

Tue, 22 May 2018 - 50min - 15 - EP 14: Getting Unstuck With Life Coach Jennifer Blaine
I am delighted to share an interview I recorded with a dear friend and life coach Jennifer Blaine. Jennifer and I had talked back in episode 3 of our podcast but in this one, Jennifer and I talk specifically about how you can start to get unstuck. We discuss how to figure out what moves you spiritually and emotionally, and how identifying that can help direct your energy towards getting unstuck.
We covered the following topics:
We are always in transition Most people are searching for their life's work, "the big thing" The power of literally saying hmmmm when you feel stuck How you can experiment in real time to see what you like and what you don't like so you can do more of what's working Things take as long as they take when it comes to emotional healing or dealing with tragedy It helps to write down the things you love so much that you wish they could be your job Even before we know what "the big thing" is, we can still make an intention of some kind How we are when we're on the way to a goal is how we'll be when we reach the goal Always be in gratitude or appreciation as you work toward goals Make the intention to listen to yourself You can get clues to your "big thing" by watching other people and getting inspired by them AND by noticing a rising energy in yourself when you think of a certain undertaking or pathHere's to Getting Unstuck, Cynthia

Tue, 15 May 2018 - 39min - 14 - EP 13: You Have to Love Yourself
In this episode, Cynthia and I chatted about the idea of loving yourself in order to get unstuck. It sounds like a goofy idea, but if you think about it, self-love is the foundation of positive change.
This week, we shared stories of different friends who have been feeling stuck. Cynthia also opened up about how a cancer diagnosis back in her 20's made her slow down and take stock. Our chat was free-flowing and we touched on these main ideas:
The benefits of slowing down and not always striving for perfection The power of yoga to heal the body and slow things down (Brennen recommends Blissology) Sometimes you have to start a project before you really know what it's going to feel like The true cost of sticking with a toxic job How out-of-control lifestyle expenses can chain you to a bad job How loving yourself is totally different from having an inflated ego Why it's ok (REALLY) to want a better life for yourselfWe hope you enjoy this episode! If you have a free minute, please email goalmagicpodcast AT gmail.com and let us know YOUR biggest challenge in getting unstuck. Even one sentence would be awesome. It helps us develop new topics for the podcast!

Tue, 08 May 2018 - 25min - 13 - EP 12: What to Do When Every Day Feels Like a Monday with Mike Neidert
I am so excited to share an interview I recorded with my friend Mike Neidert. Mike started his career in corporate but slowly felt that sinking feeling that every day felt like a Monday. Maybe you can relate! That’s when Mike came across an article I published on LinkedIn that inspired him to reach out to me. My conversation with Mike changed his path forever so you will definitely want to listen in to hear what he’s up to.
About Mike Neidert:
Mike is a career coach, sales consultant, marketer and copywriter who blends his unique experience from a career in advertising, recruiting and sales to do what he finds most rewarding: helping others.
After growing up in Northeast Ohio and attending Kent State University, Mike moved to New York City where he experienced his first taste of sales and recruiting. While working for the largest creative recruiting agency in the US, he honed his sales skills and developed a behind-the-scenes look at effective job hunting. Transitioning to business development roles at two NYC tech startups, Mike brought on new business from clients like CNN, BET, Dell, Oracle, Todd Snyder and JetBlue.
In May 2017, Mike left his SaaS sales job and chose to explore a new career direction on a new continent. Now a full-time freelancer based in Central Europe, he focuses on copywriting, marketing, sales consulting and career coaching, combining his experience in consultative sales, recruiting and advertising to help people and organizations.
Mike is a lifelong automotive enthusiast, watch collector, mountain biker, punk rock fan and traveler. He lives in Podgorica, Montenegro with his girlfriend.

Tue, 01 May 2018 - 42min - 12 - EP 11: Michael Sussman on Switching Tracks to Make More Impact on the World
I am pumped to share an interview I recorded with Michael Sussman, the owner and president of Strategic Rail Finance, a North American rail industry consulting firm he started in 1994. He is actually the husband of my dear friend and life coach, Jennifer Blaine, whose interview you may have heard on EP 03.
Michael has a fascinating story. He was running a successful commercial refrigeration company when he realized that he wasn’t really doing anything to create positive change or making an impact in this world. He quit his job, got unstuck and shifted his path after his epiphany.
Michael became interested in the idea of fighting for systems that benefit everyone in society rather than just the bottom lines of powerful companies. That's why he has long been a champion for America's rail system, which he argues is far more efficient than most other modes of transportation.
This episode is great for anyone with a strong desire to make the world a better place. It feels so much better when you truly believe in the work you're doing.

Tue, 24 Apr 2018 - 43min - 11 - EP 10: From Former Wall Street Executive to Bestselling Author - Maureen Sherry on Following Your Life's Calling
I am so excited to share an interview I recorded with bestselling author Maureen Sherry. I am a fan of Maureen's book, Opening Belle, which has been optioned to be a major motion picture set to star Reese Witherspoon. Opening Belle resonated with me for its honest yet funny take on sexism in American corporations, so I reached out to Maureen to express my gratitude for her book, which lead to this heartening interview.
Maureen has had a fascinating life and career, going from high-flying banking executive to successful writer. She’s also a happy mom. In this interview, we talk about the ups and downs of being a female executive in Wall Street (and in corporate, in general), the sneaky way mega corporations hide sexism and scandals and the reason why her novel Opening Belle almost never saw the light of day. There are lots of takeaways from this episode, so you’ll definitely want to give it a listen.

Tue, 10 Apr 2018 - 42min - 9 - EP 08: Living the Rainbow and Unicorn Life with CakeSpy Writer and Artist Jessie Moore
Jessie Moore is the creative talent behind CakeSpy.com, the world's first "Dessert Detective Agency." I call Jessie the human rainbow because she's such a radiantly positive and supportive person. Oh and she's REALLY into unicorns... in the best possible way.
Jessie is the author of numerous books, including the recently released Stuff Unicorns Love: The Ultimate Guide to the Life and Culture of Unicorns and Baking with Steel. She has also illustrated a bunch of adorable unicorn-themed coloring books. On an equally serious note, Jessie wanted me to let you know that she is the official Illustrator of a national mattress chain's blog.
Jessie is also an eating disorder activist after personally battling anorexia and bulimia. She writes about her experience with eating disorders on CakeSpy.com in a section she calls Unicorn Love. If you (or someone you know) is struggling with an eating disorder, you might want to start off by reading this amazing post where she first wrote about her experiences.
There's so much good stuff in this episode that I find I really can't sum it up in writing. It's just loaded with insights and inspiration for anyone who ever wanted to be somebody in this world.
Make sure check out the photo gallery to see the "life plan" that Jessie typed up when she was 10 or 11 years old. She was full of GOAL MAGIC even then.
I hope you enjoy hanging out with Jessie Moore as much as I did!

Tue, 03 Apr 2018 - 44min - 8 - EP 07: Riding the Long Road to Success and Personal Fulfillment with Andy Williams
My long-time friend Andy Williams is a man of many talents. As a musician, he is the long-time frontman for the band Lefty’s Deceiver, which released numerous studio records and toured the United States off and on from 1999 to 2003. Lefty’s Deceiver gained fame for their energetic live shows which saw Andy transform from a mild-mannered dude into a blazing rock star whenever he took the stage.
As an amateur athlete, Andy shares my love of road cycling, and that is how we became friends. Andy wakes at 5am, religiously, almost ritualistically, to ride his bike with his friends around his home base in Los Angeles. He has twice completed The Longest Day ride, which is 200 miles in a single day, and in 2016 he reached his goal of riding 6,000 miles in one year. When you ride with Andy, you better be ready to suffer... in the best possible way. Last, but certainly not least, Andy is a Hollywood executive producer, focusing on visual effects for TV and movies. You have seen his work on The Leftovers, Silver Linings Playbook, Chernobyl Diaries, Do No Harm, Safety Not Guaranteed and many more projects.
In our conversation we talked about athletic consistency, his perspective on what it’s like to work in the TV industry and why he’s made it a priority to work with people he likes.
Andy is a humble, laid back guy who doesn’t really think in terms of concrete goals, but don’t let that fool you. His superpower is his consistent focus and positive attitude in all things. I found his point of view really refreshing and I think you will too.
PS: After this interview was recorded, Andy shared with me that some people see a big goal as something to focus on narrowly like a laser, but he always sees his goals as a way to widen out life and increase the possibilities. I think that's a really cool perspective.
Stay Magic, Brennen

I am excited to share the rest of my interview with Kim Peterson Stone with you all! In Part 2, Kim gives some tips and advice on what she has learned from her professional adventures. If you recall from EP 04, she went from running a $20 million company to losing it all when the venture collapsed. She lost herself in a marriage that ended in divorce. Kim has since had a rebirth of sorts, launching her own 7-figure business and finding true love. I am so excited to share this interview with Kim Peterson Stone! Kim has an incredible roller coaster story about how she went from running a $20 million company to losing it all. On top of that, she lost herself in a marriage that ended in divorce. And yet through all this, Kim has found her way back to write her own happy story this time around. Talk about getting unstuck!
Kim now owns her own digital marketing company, Common Sense Health, which brought in 7-figures in 2017, and she has since found love again. Kim has so much personal and professional wisdom to offer that we decided to record two sessions! I hope you are as inspired as I was by this interview.
