Mon, 12 Dec 2022 - 150 - 149. Lena Dunham's Luxury Tiny Home, Trevor Noah's Penthouse, 'Selling the OC' episode 7 Recap
We kick off this week's episode of "House Party" with a lively discussion about two buzzy topics in celebrity real estate news. The first: writer, director, and millennial antihero Lena Dunham's beautifully designed luxury tiny home that she built in her parents' backyard. The über successful Dunham could presumably live just about anywhere, but she opted to design and move into a one-and-a-half-bedroom "forever home" that's 10 feet from her parents' house. So we have to wonder if Dunham's latest real estate move is indicative of a larger trend for millennials and Gen Zers. Is designing and living in an accessory dwelling unit the next hot housing trend for young would-be homebuyers who don’t mind sharing a yard with their family? Then, we chat about Trevor Noah's gorgeously designed New York City penthouse that hit the market for $13 million. With 3,600 square feet of space, 15-foot ceilings, and a private terrace with a plunge pool, could this be the best deal in the Big Apple? And we finish out the episode with a recap of "Selling the OC" episode 7. The penultimate episode of the season is full of petty drama and pretty homes, including a modern Mediterranean in Newport Beach, CA, and a renovated midcentury home in San Clemente, CA. Fri, 11 Nov 2022 - 149 - 148. Truth Behind the Homes on 'Selling the OC' Episode 6, Plus, Is Kylie Jenner's Mansion Actually Worth $22M?
Over the years we've seen plenty of celebrities buy and sell second homes in the same city as their primary residence. Lebron James has simultaneously owned homes in the tony Los Angeles enclaves of Brentwood and Beverly Hills. Leonardo DiCaprio has a long history of doing real estate deals all over LA, from Malibu to Los Feliz. Now, Kylie Jenner is the latest A-lister to put her "spare" LA home up for sale. Jenner and her partner Travis Scott reportedly listed their Beverly Hills home for $22M. The curious part? They bought the home in 2018 for $13.4 million, far less than the current listing price. Does the 9,680-square-foot estate warrant such a high price tag? Will they get their price? We discuss it all on a new episode of "House Party" podcast. This week we also discuss Reese Witherspoon's latest real estate win: flipping (one of) her Nashville homes for $7.4 million. And we finish out the episode with a recap of "Selling the OC" episode six, titled "Co-listing Chaos." As the agents at The Oppenheim Group Newport Beach are dealing with the fallout of the "Kayla-Tyler drama," we are treated to an inside look at two gorgeous properties. The first is "Gio's house," a 3,817-square-foot home on Newport Bay, and the second is "Tyler's listing" in Dana Point, a mansion that was on the market for $10M. If you could design the living room in your ultimate beach house, what would it look like? That's the question the teams on "Battle on the Beach" had to ponder this week. Of course, being a part of this design competition means they have to stick to a strict budget and a limited timeline, but that doesn't mean they could slack off on putting unique, creative touches on their spaces. To impress the judges and take home the top prize this week, the teams had to add an architectural detail and antique nautical decor to their living rooms. Which team reigned supreme? We break it all down on this week’s episode of “House Party.” And, after a brief hiatus, Winners and Losers is back! Summer is closer than ever, and on HGTV that means a return to the shore for another season of "Battle on the Beach." We thoroughly enjoyed the first season of this home renovation competition show, and we weren't alone. Last year, it was watched by more than 13 million viewers. So you can only imagine how excited we were to meet three new teams of competitors and see them flip three identical beach houses with the help of their HGTV mentors Ty Pennington, Taniya Nayak, and Alison Victoria. This week, the teams tackled the kitchen and dining areas in their respective beach houses. One team's design reigned supreme, but the episode featured plenty of twists and turns that we couldn't wait to discuss. Want to hear our hot takes? Press play on this new episode of "House Party." And, in the wake of "Top Gun: Maverick" being the hottest movie of the summer, we welcome Realtor.com celebrity real estate writer Claudine Zap back on the podcast to discuss Tom Cruise’s real estate portfolio. Fri, 13 May 2022 - 134 - Lil Jon's New HGTV Show. Plus, a Real Estate Scam You Probably Haven't Heard Of
From "The Tinder Swindler" to the Elizabeth Holmes saga, our fascination with scammers knows no bounds. So, you can imagine how intrigued we were to learn about the brother-sister team who conned homebuyers out of $6 million in down payments. On a new episode of "House Party," we discuss this case and try to figure out how on earth the accused parties pulled it off. We also wrap up our thoughts on "Selling Sunset" season five, give our brutally honest thoughts on the newest HGTV show "Lil Jon Wants to Do What?", and crown this week's real estate winner. Fri, 06 May 2022 - 133 - 132. 'Selling Sunset' Season 5: The Real Estate Wars Continue; Plus, a Grammy-Winning Duo Takes a Loss
"Selling Sunset"—the Netflix reality TV show that focuses on luxury homes in Los Angeles and the relationships between the agents who sell them—is about 10% real estate and 90% drama. Some people wish the beautiful properties were highlighted more, but frankly, it's just not that kind of show. You might come to "Selling Sunset" for an up-close look at eight-figure mansions, but you stay for the not-so-controlled chaos that plays out among the agents on the show After tearing through Season 5, which started streaming a week ago, we were fascinated by how the agents of The Oppenheim Group handle bidding wars, deal with difficult clients, and negotiate closing cost credits. On this episode of "House Party," we dig into all the drama of the latest season. We also discuss the return of "Windy City Rehab" and Alison Victoria's season of "hell." And we crown this week's celebrity real estate winner and losers. A pink house, an edible garden, and an oyster oven: These are all outdoor features we saw on this week's episode of "Rock the Block." The four teams of HGTV stars focused their efforts on the house exteriors, which they renovated to enhance the curb appeal and outdoor amenities. Host Ty Pennington also challenged the teams to build a dog-friendly feature, and while some of the designers had a ruff time pulling it off, one team proved it was best in show. Thu, 31 Mar 2022 - 128 - 127. Dumpster Diving?! 'Rock the Block' Teams Push the Limits for a Win This Week
This week on "Rock the Block," the teams renovate the finished room over the garage (a.k.a. the F.R.O.G.) and the loft space. While most teams went the route of building an in-law unit or accessory dwelling unit, one team went in an entirely different direction and made a design choice that likely helped them secure the win. On this episode of "House Party," we discuss the impact of guest judges (and high-end designers) Nate Berkus and Jeremiah Brent, whether or not good design adds value to a home, Keith Bynum's savvy dumpster diving skills, and more. For weeks, we've been watching Keith Bynum and Evan Thomas compete on the HGTV renovation show "Rock the Block." The Motor City is now their home and the location of their own HGTV show, "Bargain Block," which chronicles their efforts to revitalize neighborhoods one house at a time. We were thrilled to sit down with Bynum and Thomas to discuss their time on "Rock the Block," their favorite moments, and how they survived having their house judged by some of the most famous and skilled designers in the game. Tue, 08 Mar 2022 - 123 - 122. HGTV Stars Leslie Davis and Lyndsay Lamb; Plus, Why Michael Jordan Hasn't Sold His Mansion in 10 Years
Last week we jumped head-first into the new season of "Rock the Block," and, to be quite honest, we're hooked! The home renovation competition gives four teams of HGTV stars mere weeks and a limited budget to design one of four identical homes in their signature style while also adding value to their property. The team who adds the most value wins. At this point in the show, it's anyone's game and we have zero idea which team is going to take the crown. Perhaps it'll be Leslie Davis and Lyndsay Lamb, the twin sisters and stars of their own HGTV show, "Unsellable Houses". This week we had the opportunity to speak with them about the extensive preparation they did for the competition, how they infused their eclectic and earthy design aesthetic into their house, and what life was really like on the set of "Rock the Block". Click the player above to hear our chat with them, as well as the following topics: Michael Jordan's iconic IL mansion recently hit a not-so-fortunate milestone: it has been on the market for 10 years. Fri, 04 Mar 2022 - 122 - 121. 'Rock the Block' Returns With a Kitchen Showdown: S3 E1 Recap
We love a good home renovation show—especially when that show pits HGTV stars against one another. So you can imagine how excited we are that the new season of "Rock the Block" has begun. For the next six weeks we'll watch some of our favorite design experts go head to head to maximize the value of four identical houses. Each team has $225,000 to customize their house in pursuit of the ultimate prize: bragging rights and a street named in their honor. Oh, and did we mention that Ty Pennington is hosting? Yeah, this is going to be fun. This week's episode starts out by introducing us to the four teams competing against each other: Mike Jackson and Egypt Sherrod from "Married to Real Estate", "Jenny and Dave Marrs from "Fixer to Fabulous", Keith Bynum and Evan Thomas from "Bargain Block", and Lyndsay Lamb and Leslie Davis from "Unsellable Houses". The first challenge is to make over the kitchen, dining area, and adjacent powder room. Each team is looking to add their signature style to their rooms while also increasing the appeal and overall value. And who stops by to judge their hard work? New Kids on the Block alums/current renovation aficionados Jonathan and Jordan Knight. The former boy band members are the first of a handful of celebrity guest judges that we'll see throughout the season. So, which team's kitchen, dining, and powder room had "the right stuff"? Click play to hear our recap of the entire episode. Fri, 22 Oct 2021 - 118 - 117. Meghan Trainor's Tandem Toilets; HGTV's "House Haunters," and The Great Coffee Table Book Debate
It's October, so of course all things Halloween are taking over—and HGTV is no exception. The network recently debuted a new show called "House Haunters"—yes, you read that right—haunters, not hunters. Starring Anthony Anderson of "Black-ish" and his famous Mama Doris, "House Haunters" preys on unsuspecting homebuyers and real estate agents in this hidden camera prank show. Always silly, mostly stupid, but definitely entertaining, this show has very little to do with real estate—but we're here for it anyway. Or at least one of us is. Tune in to this week's episode to hear more, and other topics we discuss: Perhaps equally horrifying as "House Haunters," pop star Meghan Trainor has installed tandem toilets in her home for her and her husband. Wed, 29 Sep 2021 - 116 - 115. Is This Property Brothers Makeover a Diamond or a Dud? Plus, the New 'Status' Appliance—Do You Want One?
Do you currently own your forever home? Would having that forever home renovated by HGTV stars Drew and Jonathan Scott make you want to stay there, well, forever? Part of the appeal of "Property Brothers: Forever Home," which premiered in 2019, is that viewers can tune in with the expectation that the homeowners will be keeping these homes for the long haul—as opposed to turning around and selling them, capitalizing on the premium that the house was featured on TV. (The first episode of "Property Brothers: Forever Home" was the highest-rated series premiere for HGTV since March 2017.) So you can only imagine our surprise when we learned that the house featured on the series premiere episode—a modest yet charming three-bedroom, three-bathroom in Richmond, CA—recently went up for sale. Naturally, we had to recap the episode and dive deeper into the story on "House Party." Press play to listen to our no-holds-barred thoughts on the renovation, and why we think the homeowners decided to move on from their supposed forever home. Other topics we discuss: The rise of the "status" fridge trend: Is it here to stay or a fleeting design choice for the wealthy? When news that the Gorman House from "Fixer Upper" hit the market this week for $1.2 million we knew we had to recap the episode. The renovation was featured in season one, episode two, and the episode is a pretty iconic walk down memory lane because we are introduced to shiplap, Joanna's taste for frilly farmhouse decor (which, thankfully, has evolved), and Chip's antics. Fri, 27 Aug 2021 - 114 - 113. Is Christina Haack Engaged Again? Plus, Behind the Scenes With 'Battle on the Beach' Winners Kerry and David Kersh
Christina Haack (formerly Christina Anstead, formerly Christina el Moussa) is famous for her HGTV show "Christina on the Coast." But she's arguably even more famous for her ever-changing relationship statuses. Now, she's lit the internet aflame once again with something of a scandal—involving a photo of her, her brand new beau, and what looks suspiciously like a diamond sparkler on her left hand. The photo was quickly deleted and replaced, which left everyone wondering what the design guru might be trying to hide. Tune into this episode of "House Party" as we discuss the gossip—and get a first look at Haack's brand new $10 million mansion in Dana Point, CA. Also on this episode: Are Chip and Joanna Gaines moving to Montecito, CA? We review everything we know so far. We've finally reached the end of HGTV's "Battle on the Beach" and while we're so sad it's over, we were delighted to sit down with winners Kerry and David Kersh (Team Taniya Nayek) on the podcast this week. We're thrilled to welcome executive producers Michael Matsumoto and Rob Zimmerman to the podcast this week! They've masterminded some of our favorite TV shows including "Fixer Upper" and "Battle on the Beach," so we couldn't wait to pick their brains about creating home renovation shows, working with some of our favorite HGTV stars (Ty Pennington, Alison Victoria, Chip and Joanna Gaines), and what really happens behind the scenes. They also broke some pretty exciting news about "Battle on the Beach" (it's not over just yet!) and revealed some of the upcoming HGTV projects we can expect to see next year. If you're a regular listener of this podcast, you'll know we've been following HGTV's "Battle on the Beach" since it first premiered last month. You'll also know that we've had a lot of questions about how things really went down on the show. That's why we were beyond thrilled this week to have one of the three couple-contestants, Sunjay and Darryl Williams (Team Alison Victoria), join us on the podcast and divulge all the behind-the-scenes dirt. The Atlanta-based renovating duo were an absolute delight and offered up some fun anecdotes that we're pretty certain never aired. Fri, 13 Aug 2021 - 111 - 110. Would You Buy Cleaning Supplies From Kris Jenner? Plus, the Pressure Rises on 'Battle on the Beach'
Would you buy household cleaning supplies from Kris Jenner? The matriarch of the Kardashian clan announced last week that Safely, her line of "plant-powered" products designed to cleanse every surface of your home, is making its retail debut at Bed Bath & Beyond. The six-product line clearly comes as a result of the cleaning bug that many of us have had since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. There's hand soap, hand sanitizer, universal cleaner, and laundry detergent. We had to ask ourselves: Is the world begging for another line of cleaning products, especially one that resembles many of the minimalist, eco-friendly offerings that already exist? Sat, 07 Aug 2021 - 110 - 109. The Reality Star Romances You Won't Believe; Plus, HGTV's 'Battle on the Beach': Did the Right Bedroom Win?
We're back to recap another episode of HGTV's "Battle on the Beach," and this time the three renovating teams are tackling the main bedroom. Of course, there are several twists along the way, and our couples are getting increasingly snippy with one another. And, dare we say, we're here for the drama. But we might not be here for the winning team's bedroom design. We're calling this the show's first flop—but what do you think? Click the player above to hear our recap, and then email us at podcast@realtor.com and let us know if we're wrong! Other topics we discuss on this week's podcast: The steamy relationship status of our favorite real estate reality TV stars: Everybody's getting cozy! Ty Pennington is engaged! "Selling Sunset" star Chrishelle Stause is reportedly dating her boss, Jason Oppenheim. (Insert "wow" emoji here.) Christina Haack's been vacationing with her new beau, and Jonathan Scott and Zooey Deschanel are still going strong. And we've got no winners but two celebrity real estate losers this week. Fri, 30 Jul 2021 - 109 - 108. Our Honest Take on the Launch of Chip and Jo's Magnolia Network; Plus, 'Battle on the Beach,' Episode 2
“Fixer Upper” fanatics have been waiting with bated breath for the official launch of the Magnolia Network, the television and streaming channel curated by Chip and Joanna Gaines. For months, they’ve been teasing a mix of home and design, cooking, and gardening shows about “risk takers, creators, course changers, dreamers, and learners,” but the premiere on July 15 revealed the full extent of their programming—and their plans for the future. This week on “House Party,” Rachel and Natalie take a close look at the slate of shows currently offered on the Magnolia Network and serve up their no-holds-barred thoughts. Some of the series sound laughably banal (like “Making Modern With Brooke and Brice,” in which “a married duo renovates amazing homes”). Others sound impossibly niche (“Super Dad” introduces us to Taylor Calmus, a DIY expert who helps fathers realize their kids’ backyard dreams). Above all, Rachel and Natalie can’t help but wonder if—and how—many of these shows will find an audience. Other topics we discuss: We were so captivated by the first episode of HGTV's "Battle on the Beach" that we decided to recap Episode 2! Fri, 23 Jul 2021 - 108 - 107. HGTV’s ‘Battle on the Beach’: Hilarious Celeb Showdowns and Jaw-Dropping Designs We Can’t Get Enough Of
What do you get when you put our favorite HGTV stars on the beach in Gulf Shores, AL? No, it's not a weird spinoff of "Floribama Shore"—at least we don't think we'll see a crew of scantily clad home renovators partying it up Snooki-style. (Although, TBH, we'd watch that.) No, this is HGTV's new show “Battle on the Beach,” where Ty Pennington (of “Ty Breaker”), Alison Victoria (“Windy City Rehab”), and Taniya Nayak (“Restaurant: Impossible”) each mentor a pair of renovation novices competing to fix up a house along the Alabama Gulf Coast. The show, which airs on Sundays, premiered this week, so we tuned in to see if it's worth the watch. Click the player above to hear our recap and thoughts on the show. Other topics we discuss: We're working on our decluttering game right now, but there are a few things we're guilty of letting pile up—and finding hard to throw out. Do you identify with any of these? Rihanna could be your landlord—but how much will it cost? Kurt Cobain and Courtney Love's Los Angeles dump flew off the market in less than a month and went for over asking price. Take a look inside. Fri, 16 Jul 2021 - 107 - 106. The Sexiest Kitchen Ever? Plus, Bad News for Shaq; Alicia Keys Sells Dreamy Desert Home
We enjoyed last week's episode of "Celebrity IOU" so much that we had to see what was in store for this week. To our delight, the latest installment was arguably more entertaining—and heartwarming—due in large part to the celebrity guest, the lovely LeAnn Rimes. "Property Brothers" stars Drew and Jonathan Scott returned to help the singer and actress fix up the home of her very dear friend Roger, who's been a guiding light in Rimes' life. To show her gratitude for nearly 20 years of friendship, Rimes teamed up with the Scotts to turn Roger's kitchen and deck space into an entertainer's dream. The team had two major design challenges: fixing the awkward kitchen layout and churning out a moody yet welcoming all-black kitchen. And while all-black kitchens have the potential to go very wrong, the Scott brothers and Rimes really nailed it. To hear how they pulled it off, click on the new episode of "House Party" above. Fri, 02 Jul 2021 - 106 - 105. ‘Celebrity IOU’: Property Brothers, Kris Jenner Reveal the One Thing Your Backyard Renovation Must Include
When the "Property Brothers" stars debuted their latest show, "Celebrity IOU," last year, it was an instant hit. The HGTV endeavor pairs Drew and Jonathan Scott with celebrities who want to gift a home renovation to someone special in their lives (and they've managed to get quite a few A-listers on board). So when the show returned this week after a hiatus, we knew we should tune in to see what all the fuss is about. In this episode, the brothers team up with Kris Jenner to build an outdoor oasis for Jenner's best friend, who's had a rough couple of years. (Kim Kardashian West and Kendall Jenner join in for some of the fun, too.) We discuss the episode, and whether there are actually any useful takeaways if you're not made of millions. Other topics we discuss: Cara Delevigne's quirky Los Angeles home was just featured in a video tour by Architectural Digest, and the internet is abuzz over the "vagina tunnel" inside. But that might be one of the less weird features of her home—it's an adult playground, and we are here for it. Joe Jonas and Sophie Turner's nearly $17 million home is up for sale—and at least one of us finds it surprising. Fri, 25 Jun 2021 - 105 - 104. Can Renting Out Your Pool Pay Your Mortgage? Plus, Our Spin on HGTV's 'The Laundry Guy'
It's summer and that means we're all craving some pool time. With the current heat wave in the West, where temperatures are creeping up into the triple digits, jumping into a pool—any pool—sounds like heaven on earth. But what are those of us who don't own a pool to do? One solution is Swimply, the app that allows you to rent a pool in your area. We've been privy to Swimply for a few summers, but with so many lingering questions (Do the pool hosts have insurance? Are the pool hosts home while you're taking a dip? Where do you go to the bathroom?), we were hesitant to take the plunge and rent a pool. This week, though, we welcomed Swimply co-founder and COO Asher Weinberger to "House Party" to answer all our questions and give us the scoop on how Swimply came to be, the impact it could have on homebuying, and some of the craziest uses for Swimply to date. Other topics we discuss: Iggy Azalea's hilarious (and petty) feud with her new suburban neighbors "The Laundry Guy," a new show on the Discovery+ streaming network, aims to answer all your burning laundry questions. Fri, 18 Jun 2021 - 104 - 103. Christina Haack's New Reality on 'Christina on the Coast;' Plus, Why Celebrities Can't Stop Flocking to Montecito, CA
Christina Haack is one of the most infamous HGTV personalities of all time for a number of reasons including the success of her home renovation TV shows and her highly publicized personal life. She's been the star of two successful home renovation TV shows—"Flip or Flop" and "Christina on the Coast". Plus, her on-screen and off-screen drama with her ex-husband Tarek El Moussa pushed her into the public eye and onto the covers of gossip magazines. Like Chip and Joanna Gaines and Ty Pennington, Haack is an A-list home improvement celebrity. But unlike the the Gaines and Pennington, Haack and her well-known TV shows have never been topics of discussion on "House Party." Therefore, with the premiere of the fourth season of "Christina on the Coast," we thought it was high time to see what all the buzz was about and recap the episode. Thu, 10 Jun 2021 - 103 - 102. '40 Year Old Property Virgin' is the Cringe HGTV Show We Didn't Know We Needed
It's pretty safe to say that everybody had big plans for 2021—and that doesn't exclude our favorite home improvement reality show network, HGTV. You may recall that we discussed earlier this year the big plans HGTV had for its programming in 2021—a slate of 16 new shows on deck, including one, in particular, that caught our eye: "40 Year Old Property Virgin." As you can imagine from the title, this show, which just premiered on the Discovery+ streaming network, profiles 40-somethings trying to buy a home for the first time. We had to tune in—and suffice it to say: We got more than we bargained for. Who knew HGTV was the new destination for cringe? Backyard chickens have been a thing for a while, but the pandemic saw interest in this hobby skyrocket. Now, everybody—celebrities and real people alike—wants a chicken coop. So much so that companies that rent chicken coops (yes, you can rent the chickens, too!) are selling out across the country. We discuss whether this trend is all it's cracked up to be.Other topics we discuss: Lil Jon is getting his own HGTV show—but has he already beefed it big time? Thu, 27 May 2021 - 101 - 100. Kelly Clarkson's Real Estate Victory; The 'Ultimate Spaghetti Trick'; A Questionable New Candle Scent
We've had our eyes on Kelly Clarkson's real estate portfolio for a while now. The singer and television personality famously bought—and is currently selling—two mega-mansions, one in Los Angeles and one in Tennessee. In terms of features, these two abodes are comparable. Both feature massive five-digit floor plans, extensive backyard water features, and farmhouse-style touches like exposed wood. They're both located in star-studded enclaves (the Los Angeles home is in Encino and the Tennessee estate is in Hendersonville). And, of course, they both have the celebrity pedigree of being owned by the beloved Clarkson. But the one glaring difference between these two properties? The Tennessee estate has been languishing on the market for years. Four years, to be exact. However, this week we finally learned that Clarkson found a buyer. The Hendersonville house went into contract, but the final sale price is unknown (although she most recently slashed the price to $7.5M in December 2020). Guess we'll just have to wait a little longer to see if Clarkson will walk away from this one a winner. But the question still remains: why did it take so long for this sprawling southern estate to sell? We have some theories that we couldn't wait to propose on week's episode of our official podcast, "House Party." In addition to celebrating Clarkson unloading her Tennessee palace, we also toast a "House Party" milestone: our 100th episode! We couldn't have done it without our loyal listeners and we are so grateful for their support. Other topics we discuss on this week's episode: Candle news! Drake's Better World Fragrance House candle line launches. Plus, would you burn a tomato-scented candle? Thu, 13 May 2021 - 100 - 99. Netflix's Creepy New Thriller; Ronnie 'The Limo Driver' Mund; Katy Perry; Zac Efron; Jesse Tyler Ferguson
Any horror buff knows that the house where the film is set can play as much of a character as the cast. And that's especially true in Netflix's new thriller, "Things Heard and Seen," starring Amanda Seyfried and James Norton. The synopsis goes something like this: "After moving to a small town with her husband, a young artist begins to suspect that their home harbors a dark secret." Scary home + paranormal thriller? Sign us up! That's why we were so excited this week to sit down with the movie's directors, Robert Pulcini and Shari Springer Berman, and have them answer all of our burning questions: How do you pick the best house for a horror movie? What made you pick this particular house? And did anything creepy happen on set? We hope you'll enjoy this interview—and the film—as much as we did. Other topics we discuss: Howard Stern's sidekick Ronnie "The Limo Driver" Mund is none too pleased with us this week. The duo talked at length on Stern's SiriusXM radio show on Monday about an article we wrote highlighting photos of Ronnie's home for sale. Stern and others said our article would only help Ronnie sell faster and for more money. But Ronnie feels like his privacy was violated. What do you think? Katy Perry might be finally offloading her 4,000-square-foot "guesthouse." And, as always, our celebrity real estate winner and loser of the week Want more “House Party”? Thu, 29 Apr 2021 - 99 - 98. Should Celebs Stay in Their Lanes When it Comes to Home and Gardening Advice?
It's no surprise that gardening skyrocketed into the hearts—and onto the social media pages—of many Americans during the pandemic. It's one of the fastest-growing hobbies, but it's also nothing new. Master gardeners have been honing their craft for years. And yet in the past year we've seen more and more celebrities showing an interest (sometimes even a mild fascination) in gardening and other home projects and then parlaying that into business ventures. A recent New York Times article highlighted Drew Barrymore's gig as the and face of Instead, a new lawn-care subscription service. Bear in mind that until last spring, the actress, businesswoman, and TV host doubted her ability to garden before planting her first lawn. "I did not think I could do this,” Barrymore told the New York Times. So, our question is: do celebrities really deserve to be seen as the face (or, in the case of Barrymore, the co-chief creative officer) of a home and/or gardening company if they don't really have as much experience as, say, a seasoned expert with a lower profile and smaller platform? Why are we so quick to take advice from celebrities—even consider them "guides" or "gurus"—when they've barely proven their hand at skills like gardening, furniture making, or beekeeping? How does merely showing an interest in a popular hobby qualify anyone to form an empire around it? On this week's episode of "House Party," we get into the reasons why this seems a little backward. Other stories we discuss on this episode: Madonna buys The Weeknd's home in Hidden Hills for $19.3M Bette Midler's $50M Manhattan penthouse finds a buyer Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson buys rockin' Beverly Park estate for $27.8M This week's celebrity real estate winner and loser of the week Want more “House Party”? Fri, 23 Apr 2021 - 98 - 97. Is ‘Home Work’ the Next ‘Fixer Upper’? Plus, an Interview With the Buyer of ‘Silence of the Lambs’ House
Any movie buff knows the house: the faded turn-of-the-century wallpaper; the creepy, cluttered kitchen; and the telltale moths that tipped off Clarice Starling for that thrill ride of an ending. Yes, it's the house belonging to Buffalo Bill in "The Silence of the Lambs," and it was recently on the market—until one horror aficionado scooped it up. The buyer of the iconic house, Chris Rowan, pops in to the pod this week to give us the full rundown on what he plans to do with the place—and it's pretty crazy. Tune in to our latest episode to hear, and then find out more at buffalobillshouse.com. Other topics we discuss: TikTokers are learning there's a crumb tray in their toasters. We'd like to judge, but we've been pretty obtuse, too. The premiere of "Home Work" is now streaming on Discovery+. One reviewer called it the next "Fixer Upper" and its hosts, Andy and Candis Meredith, the next Chip and Joanna Gaines. We offer our thoughts—uncensored. For nearly three decades, HGTV has churned out lighthearted, wholesome content that, when consumed, feels like a warm hug. Its home renovation TV shows—particularly the programming over the past 10 years—have provided an easy watching experience for those of us looking for a soothing, formulaic, low-stakes viewing experience. But a recent story in the New Yorker indicated that things might be changing at HGTV: The content might be getting edgier. With potential new shows with working titles like "Meth-House Makeover," "Nightmare Neighbors 911," and "The World's Weirdest Realtors," it appears that the executives at Discovery (HGTV's parent company) are thinking outside the box—and we're totally on board. On this episode of "House Party," we break down this story and give our honest, unfiltered opinions. Are we in favor of HGTV getting a little weird? Press play above to find out! And, we also crown this week's celebrity real estate winner and loser. Our winner, an NBA star and exotic fish aficionado, swam off with quite a deal on his Las Vegas mansion. And, despite lowering the asking price of her Southern California mansion, our loser (a fast-food restaurant heiress) won't be flipping burgers anytime soon. Want more “House Party”? Thu, 01 Apr 2021 - 96 - 95. Is Your Clutter Worth Thousands? 'Everything But the House' Shows How Much You Can Get for Your Stuff
Just when you were thinking, “Hmmm, there simply aren’t enough home organizing shows out there” (Just kidding! There are nothing BUT home organizing shows out there these days!) along comes another one to fill the void. GMA’s Lara Spencer hosts “Everything But the House,” an HGTV show that centers around families that need to clear the clutter out of their homes and call on a group of appraisers to help them cash in on valuables hiding in plain sight. Part “Antiques Roadshow,” part “Pawn Stars,” part HGTV makeover show, “Everything But the House” appeals to the treasure hunter inside us all. But is it compelling enough to keep watching? We discuss on this week’s episode. Other topics we discuss: Speaking of organizing shows, Netflix’s “The Home Edit” got renewed for a second season. Some “Real Housewives” real estate updates: What’s the status of Vicki Gunvalson’s Orange County, CA, home and Teresa Giudice’s New Jersey mansion? Thu, 25 Mar 2021 - 95 - 94. Chip and Jo's Shocking Admissions, From Their Oprah Interview; Plus, Sad News for Shaq
Keeping tabs on all things Chip and Joanna Gaines has become our MO on "House Party," so when we learned that the duo would be joining Oprah Winfrey for an exclusive interview, we knew we had to tune in. Winfrey's previous high-profile sit-down with Meghan Markle and Prince Harry was full of vulnerable admissions and revelations about their lives over the past few years, so we figured that, this time around, we were in for an honest, insightful chat with the famed "Fixer Upper" duo. Did they go as deep as we'd hoped, or were we left wanting more? We get into it on this brand-new episode of "House Party." Other topics we discuss: It's been about a year since we went into lockdown, and that (in addition to this New York Times article) prompted us to reflect on our pandemic purchases for the home and how our decor has changed. Shaquille O'Neal was so close to closing the sale of his infamous Windermere, FL, estate that he's been trying to sell for three years. We rejoiced when the $16.5 million pad was reported as pending a month ago, but this week we learned the property is back on the market. Is there anyone in the world willing to buy Shaq's highly customized mansion?! Gloria Estefan may have found a buyer for her bayfront property on Star Island in Miami Beach, FL. Listed in 2015 for $40 million, the house has since gone through multiple price cuts. This week's real estate winner and loser Want more “House Party”? It's a common dilemma when you're in a relationship for the long haul: Should you spend your hard-earned savings on your dream wedding or your dream home? That's the question the latest Netflix reality show "Marriage or Mortgage" hopes to answer. We had the exciting opportunity to sit down with hosts Nichole Holmes and Sarah Miller to discuss all the behind-the-scenes details, the biggest surprises they experienced during filming, and the advice they'd give to couples in the position of choosing dream wedding or first house. We hope you'll tune in to hear our interview (and tune in to the show—we promise you'll end up bingeing all 10 episodes in one day!), and much, much more. Other topics we discuss: Meghan and Harry's bombshell interview with Oprah Winfrey didn't just offer revelations about the royal family—it also gave us a few insights into their new neighborhood. Tue, 09 Mar 2021 - 93 - 92. Special Guest Ty Pennington Talks HGTV, His Design Pet Peeve, And His Most Extreme Makeover Yet
Ty Pennington easily takes the title of the OG of home renovation shows. With his pivotal roles on "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition" and "Trading Spaces," Ty cemented himself as a construction and design expert with a larger-than-life personality. Throughout the years he's remained in the reality TV world, but he's recently found a home at HGTV with two brand new hosting gigs on the shows "Ty Breaker" and the upcoming second season of "Rock the Block."This week, we had the pleasure of catching up with Ty, getting the dish on his latest TV shows, and finding out what else he’s been up to—both on and off screen.______ Want more “House Party”? Mon, 01 Mar 2021 - 92 - 91. Genius TikTok Hacks for the Home; Plus, Snooki's 'Beach Cabana Royale' Makes Us Say 'Huh?'
When we heard HGTV had released a new renovation show hosted by none other than Nicole "Snooki" Polizzi, it's safe to say that we were all over it like tanning lotion on the Jersey Shore. We knew very, very little about "Beach Cabana Royale" going in, so we grabbed our remotes (and a fun cocktail, of course), and prepared ourselves for a surprise on the shores of Atlantic Beach, NY. And boy did we get it. We have so many questions about this special that packed an incredible amount of content into one mere hour. (Quick synopsis of the premise: Three designers renovate three family cabanas that are ultimately judged by "Flipping Virgins" host Egypt Sherrod and our old pal Orlando Soria, star of "Build Me Up.") We hope you'll tune in to hear our take on the show—and much, much more on this week's jam-packed episode. Other topics we discuss: TikTok is a treasure trove for clever household hacks and tricks. “Here it is, literally the worst house on the street!” Is this brutally honest listing description of a home in Florida actually the most brilliant marketing plan ever? An update on former "Real Housewives" star Vicki Gunvalson's Coto de Caza, CA, home for sale Are Armie Hammer's (home sale) troubles no more? Is Kelly Clarkson finally able to break away from her Encino farmhouse? The roller coaster of a ride Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson is putting us on with his Georgia mansion Who bought Bella Thorne's house? The pink palace apparently appealed to a 13-year-old YouTube star. We're a few days out from Super Bowl XV, but we can't stop thinking about The Weeknd's halftime performance. As an avid fan of The Weeknd, Rachel enjoyed it. Others found it underwhelming. But no matter how you feel about his showing at the Super Bowl, one thing is clear—The Weeknd is at the peak of his fame. And yet, he's having a heck of a time selling his massive mansion in Hidden Hills, CA. Why can't he pull in a buyer? We have a couple of ideas. All this and more on a brand new episode of "House Party."Other topics we discuss: "Saturday Night Live's" viral sketch that asks, 'is real estate better than sex?' 2020 felt excruciatingly long for a lot of reasons, not the least of which was the wait to see Chip and Joanna Gaines on our TVs once again. For months, the duo teased their triumphant return to the small screen with “Fixer Upper: Welcome Home,” the reboot of their popular home renovating show. Mercifully, the premiere day hath arrived—and so we settled in to get our fix as Chip and Jo tackled the “worst house” they’ve ever dealt with. (Judging by our gag reflexes, we’d have to agree.) We hope you’ll tune in to hear our take on the new show—and much, much more—on this week’s episode. Other topics we discuss: Sorry, bland breakfast lovers: The pandemic has come for your cereal. Matt Damon‘s making a big move. Peek inside his $21 million Pacific Palisades, CA, home for sale. Jon Bon Jovi finally divulges the secret price of his New Jersey mansion. Teresa Giudice (of “Real Housewives of New Jersey” fame) cuts the price on her posh property. What doesn’t kill her makes her stronger? When HGTV announced they'd be rolling out 16 new shows in 2021, we were instantly intrigued. But one particular show caught our attention largely because of the high-energy celebrity chosen to host. Our ears perked up when we heard that Ty Pennington, former host of the wildly successful "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition," was slated to return to our television screens as the star of a new home renovation show, "Ty Breaker." Naturally, we had to check out the premiere episode and give your our unfiltered, no-hold-barred thoughts. Does HGTV have another hit on their hands or is this show doomed from the start? Wed, 27 Jan 2021 - 88 - 87. A Celebrity Real Estate Agent Tells All; Plus, Inside the (Almost) Unbelievable 'Bachelor' Pad of Tyler Cameron and Matt James
Celebrity moves are a huge topic of conversation on this podcast, and while we, as your humble hosts, do our best to research and bring you the full story behind those transactions, there are inevitably some things we’re left with questions about. So we decided to consult with a guy who knows firsthand: our special guest this week is Gary Gold, real estate agent to the rich and famous. Gold answers (most of) our burning questions and tells some fun celebrity stories you won't want to miss. We hope you'll tune in to hear that segment—and much, much more—on this week's episode. Other topics we discuss: Get a whiff of this: A "This Smells Like My Vagina" candle (the buzzy product released last year by actress and Goop founder Gwyneth Paltrow) exploded in a U.K. woman's living room. We do a deep dive on the luxury Manhattan apartment shared by "The Bachelor" franchise's Matt James and Tyler Cameron—and suffice it to say, we have some questions. Sure, "Bachelor" contestants have been known to make major money through influencer gigs, hawking hair-growth gummy bears or sunglasses, but we never considered that hyping up real estate could also be part of their brand. A tale of two comedians: We give an update on Kathy Griffin's gorgeous Bel-Air mansion for sale, and we check in on Chelsea Handler's equally stunning Bel-Air oasis. Armie Hammer slashes the price on his home amid headline-making scandals. Finally, in some much-needed feel-good news: NBA superstar Kyrie Irving buys a home for the family of the late George Floyd. Thu, 21 Jan 2021 - 87 - 86. Hot Design Trends for 2021, Plus, Miley Cyrus' Racy Home Decor Choices
We're back, baby! 2021 is already off to a chaotic start, but we're kicking off our first episode of the New Year with a discussion about one of our favorite topics: design trends. We consulted decor experts and asked them to spill on the trends we'll all be clamoring for this year. Which colors and features will reign supreme? Did the COVID-19 pandemic have a hand in shaping these trends? (Spoiler alert: it did.) Are we nostalgic for furniture throwbacks like '80s curves and '90s traditionalism? (Spoiler alert: we are.)Speaking of personal design choices, Miley Cyrus made us go 'huh?' when she revealed that she decorates her home with sex toys. “I buy them for myself, but I end up using them for interior design," she said in a recent interview. "Sex and interior design go actually hand in hand.” Do they, though? We get into all this and more on the latest episode of "House Party."Other topics in this episode: Kim Kardashian and Kanye West announced that they're getting divorced. Thu, 14 Jan 2021 - 86 - 85. 2020 Wrap-Up: The Celebrity Homes That Made Our Jaws Drop This Year
Welcome to the official "House Party" 2020 Year in Review! To reflect upon the past year in real estate and give 2020 the wrap-up it deserves, we thought back to all the notable properties we saw and decided to dole out superlatives. This year's accolades include the following: Ugliest House of 2020 Most Over-the-Top House of the Year Most High-Profile Home Purchase Hardest House to Sell We also couldn't wrap up 2020 without discussing the coronavirus pandemic and how we stayed at home for the majority of the year. Rachel and Natalie love their apartments, but the past nine months would have been a whole lot sweeter had we been holed up in luxury properties. So which homes captured our hearts? Natalie's pick is a "starter home" for millennial A-listers, and Rachel's choice is a "resort-style" estate with a nine-figure value. Press that Play button to hear more! And, of course, we crowned the supreme celebrity real estate winner and losers (yes, two losers) of 2020. Our winner is a rock star who masterfully bought and sold pricey property on the same day. And our losers found home in a number of places this year—whether it be an estate in Bel-Air, their prison cells, or a new mansion in Hidden Hills, CA. Thanks for sticking with us through the ups and downs of this year, and we look forward to more housing-related pop culture banter in 2021. Cheers! Want more “House Party”? If you're a frequent listener of this podcast, you know we love a good candle—especially at this time of year. There's nothing quite like curling up on the couch with a fuzzy throw blanket, hours of Netflix on the docket, and the scent of a freshly lit balsam fir soy. Unless you were to replace that wonderful Christmas tree–smell with the distinctive scent of an A-list celebrity—rapper Drake, to be specific. Yes, that's right: The entrepreneur has launched Better World Fragrance House, and a collection of five candles, including one that supposedly smells like him. It's been 20 years since "MTV Cribs" first graced our television screens. Now, MTV International is rebooting the iconic show, and promises to take us inside the homes of such celebrities as Caitlyn Jenner, Nickelodeon personality and singer JoJo Siwa, former “Glee” star Kevin McHale, and the British singer Stefflon Don. We reminisce about the "Cribs" days of yore (check out this bizarre tour of Lil Wayne's home at 17:25) and discuss whether bringing it back is the right move. Other segments this week: We do a deep dive on HBO's "The Vow," the nine-part documentary that gives an inside look at the twisted "sex cult" called NXIVM and its leader, Keith Raniere. Natalie and Rachel offer up their respective thoughts on the doc (was it an HBO miss?) and discuss what will happen to the homes where the cult enslaved, brainwashed, and branded dozens of women. Like so many others, we've fallen in love with "Schitt's Creek," the hilarious and heartwarming TV show centered around a previously wealthy family that lost all its money and moved into a motel in a remote town. That's why we were positively giddy when we heard that the owner of the actual motel used as the show's filming location is planning on selling it in the near future. That's right, SC fans. You could be the real-life proprietor of the Rosebud Motel. But how in the world can this dream become a reality? We discuss all the details on this week's episode. If you love true crime as much as we do, then you're probably up to speed on the latest Netflix sensation, "American Murder: The Family Next Door." The documentary has been trending at the top of the streaming service's charts since it debuted last week—and we can't get enough of it. We get an intimate peek inside via Shanann's many Facebook videos, along with eerie police cam footage of the home taken on the day of her disappearance. So, of course, we had to see what's up with the house now. Join us as we discuss the bizarre situation surrounding the suburban estate. Wed, 30 Sep 2020 - 79 - 78. The Most Dramatic HGTV Show Ever? Plus, How To Stay in 'The Fresh Prince' Mansion, and Derek Jeter's $29M Estate for Sale
With so many feel-good home improvement shows out there, we have to admit we're kind of relishing the train wreck that is "Windy City Rehab," HGTV's embattled reality series about flipping houses in Chicago. The show, in its sophomore season, is hosted by designer Alison Victoria and contractor Donovan Eckhardt—who made headlines this summer with their mountain of legal troubles. The tension between the two in the series' Season 2 premiere is palpable—and we're kind of here for it. We do a deep dive on all the drama, and discuss whether the show can survive another season. Other segments this week: "The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air" mansion is on Airbnb (for a shockingly low price)! We discuss what you have to do to stay there. Poor Bella Thorne keeps giving us pod fod—the actress just dropped the price of her Sherman Oaks house again. We have a feeling we know why. Jennifer Lopez and Alex Rodriguez have officially sold their Malibu, CA, beach home—so did they take a loss? Derek Jeter lists his $29 million Florida mansion that's currently occupied by Tom Brady and Gisele Bundchen. As we took a sneak peek inside, we found ourselves wondering: Who on Earth needs 16 bathrooms?! Plus, this week's real estate winner and loser Want more “House Party”? Wed, 23 Sep 2020 - 78 - 77. This Weird Cleaning Trend is Kind of Genius; Our Honest Review of ‘Get Organized With The Home Edit’
This week's episode of "House Party" is all about tidying up. As promised, we discuss Netflix's buzzy organizing show, "Get Organized With The Home Edit." Did we love it? Did we hate it? Did it influence us to tackle the clutter in our own homes? Take a listen and hear our no-holds-barred review. Other topics we discuss this week: People are watching other people clean on YouTube. Huh? Dubbed "motivational cleaning videos," they're supposed to inspire you to get off the couch and clean your own home. Is this trend weird or inspiring? We have thoughts. An update on J. Lo and A-Rod's Malibu, CA, beach house for sale Tyler Perry's latest addition to his Atlanta estate Justin and Hailey Bieber buy a mansion in Beverly Hills, CA—but we have to say, we kind of liked their old place better! Wed, 16 Sep 2020 - 77 - 76. Chrissy Teigen vs. 'Selling Sunset': We Are Here for This Throwdown
Netflix's real estate reality juggernaut "Selling Sunset" has been dominating headlines recently, thanks to a boatload of behind-the-scenes drama with its stars. The latest pop-the-popcorn moment? Chrissy Teigen called out the women on Twitter, casting doubt on whether they're actually real estate agents at all—and the cast is clapping back. Other topics we discuss this week: The inside scoop on Star Island, the Miami Beach celebrity enclave where J. Lo and A-Rod just bought a $40 million waterfront estate The rise of "cottagecore," the design trend that's peaking because of COVID-19 and Taylor Swift After entering pending status just a couple of weeks ago, Bella Thorne's house is active again—with a price cut The former sheriff's home in Missouri with nine jail cells that we just discussed last week is suddenly off the market. Wed, 02 Sep 2020 - 76 - 75. Is Bradley Cooper Secretly Living in This Sleepy Suburb? Plus, the Unassuming House With 9 Jail Cells
In terms of crazy real estate listings, we thought we'd seen it all. From hobbit houses to converted churches, we have been privy to some truly baffling properties. But the latest house to make us go "huh?" is a former sheriff's home in Fayette, MO. The two-bedroom, 2,465-square-feet home was on the market (but has since been pulled off the market) for $350,000. Listing photos 1 to 32 depict a perfectly modest midwestern place, but once you reach photo 33 things start to get a little bizarre. It is revealed that the home is attached to nine jail cells!Once this strange (and slightly disturbing-looking) property went viral, we knew we had to get the inside scoop. Why does a fully functional jail exist on this property? What use does a homeowner have for this unique amenity? We answer these questions and more on this episode of "House Party." Other topics we discuss: Bradley Cooper fans in Fairfield, CT were devastated to learn that the A-list celebrity is not living in the most expensive home in town. "Get Organized With The Home Edit," a new home organizing show coming to Netflix This week's real estate winner and loser Want more “House Party”? Tue, 25 Aug 2020 - 75 - 74. Viola Davis’ Real Estate Snafu, and How the Internet Got This Story So, So Wrong
Leave it to the incomparable Viola Davis to cause quite the internet kerfuffle. Last week, on her birthday, the Oscar winner tweeted a photo of the ramshackle home she grew up in, along with text that read, "The above is the house where I was born August 11, 1965. It is the birthplace of my story. Today on my 55th year of life....I own it....all of it." The internet went wild for this powerful story of Davis reclaiming her childhood home. Except none of it was true. We set the record straight on this week's episode—but how did news outlets get it so very wrong? Other topics we discuss in this episode: The last remaining Blockbuster video store (in Bend, OR) is being rented out on Airbnb. If you could spend the night in this nostalgia palace, which '90s movies would you watch? We rank our top rewatchables. You'd have to be living under a rock to not have heard about Meghan Markle and Prince Harry's home purchase in Santa Barbara, CA. But was it really that surprising? Katy Perry and Orlando Bloom are also reportedly house shopping in Santa Barbara, looking at massive estates where they can make room for baby. And, of course, our week's celebrity real estate winner and loser. Want more "House Party"? Subscribe on Apple Podcasts, Google Play Music, Spotify, or wherever you get your podcasts. Wed, 19 Aug 2020 - 74 - 73. Rachael Ray's House Fire; Did Joanna Gaines Decorate J. Lo and A-Rod's Home? Plus, the Instagram Account Where You Can Find Houses for Dirt Cheap
We usually don't start each episode of "House Party" discussing our picks for the week's celebrity real estate winner or loser, but this week we changed it up. Why? We had planned on naming chef and businesswoman Rachael Ray our loser (for purely numbers reasons), but the recent news of her house fire gave us pause. Thankfully, Ray, her husband, John Cusimano, and their dog all escaped safely, but their house suffered severe damage. Therefore, it seemed cruel to dub her our loser of the week. In addition to the news about Ray's home, there were other real estate topics we discuss: Why Jennifer Lopez and Alex Rodriguez are selling their Malibu "fixer-upper" after owning it for only a little over a year An update on Shia LaBeouf's home sale Swimply and the recent trend of renting out pools for the day Nick Kroll's gorgeous new Spanish-style mansion Want more "House Party"? Thu, 06 Aug 2020 - 72 - 71. A Raw Review of Martha Stewart's New HGTV Show; Inside Stars' Homes on Emmys Night; Lori Loughlin, Shia LaBeouf Latest Moves
Martha Stewart is back on our TVs, y'all! Her new HGTV show, "Martha Knows Best," premiered on July 31 and focuses on all things gardening and landscaping, complete with (virtual) celebrity guest appearances from the likes of Snoop Dogg, "Queer Eye" chef Antoni Porowski, comedian Jay Leno, and actor Richard Gere. What's our verdict on this show, shot entirely during quarantine? We have some strong opinions. Other topics we discuss in this episode: The Emmys will be held virtually this year. How will celebs prepare their homes for the big night? We introduce our newest segment, "Making Moves," where we close the loop on celebrity home sales we've previously discussed. First up: Lori Loughlin and Mossimo Giannulli finally sold their enormous estate—to a Tinder co-founder for $18.75 million. Wed, 05 Aug 2020 - 71 - 70. The Property Brothers' Most Expensive House Yet; Gigi Hadid and Bella Thorne's Shared Love of Wild Decor
Drew and Jonathan Scott, aka the Property Brothers, have bought and flipped their fair share of homes throughout the country at varying prices. Some are modest single-family homes in need of a design-minded expert, and some are multimillion-dollar mansions lacking in the up-to-date features many luxury buyers crave. But their most recent real estate purchase, a $9.5 million estate in Los Angeles' tony Brentwood neighborhood, proved to be the most expensive property they've ever held in their portfolio. The house itself is a sight to behold, with many original architectural touches from the 1930s intact. Still, we couldn't help but wonder if any big changes really need to be made. So we dig into all the details on this episode of "House Party." Other topics we discuss: Model Gigi Hadid's $5.82 million condo renovation full of pop art and color Actress Bella Thorne's eclectic, colorful L.A. mansion, which is for sale Reality TV filming postpandemic: what "Property Brothers: Forever Home" has planned This week's celebrity real estate winner and loser Ready to listen? Thu, 30 Jul 2020 - 70 - 69. We Went Inside 'The Golden Girls' House; Screech's Sad Home Sale Saga; Demi Moore's Astoundingly Ugly Bathroom Office
Thank you for being a friend! One of the buzziest real estate stories of the summer happened last week when the iconic "Golden Girls" house landed on the market for $3 million. The ranch-style home, located in Los Angeles' ritzy neighborhood of Brentwood, was used in the establishing shots of the girls' home in Miami—but looks way different inside. This week we give you the scoop (Natalie took a tour!) and discuss all the design details worth chatting about—especially that lime-green kitchen. Other topics we discuss in this episode: Demi Moore set up an office in her extremely outdated (but acoustically sound?) bathroom Rihanna is spending nearly a half-million dollars per month on a Hamptons rental Diane Keaton's adobe makeover for sale, plus her house flipping history This week's celebrity real estate winner and loser Ready to listen? True crime fans know the story of "The Staircase—" the landmark miniseries about the death of Kathleen Peterson and subsequent conviction of her husband Michael Peterson—very well. The house where the death occurred is featured heavily in the real-life thriller, so we could click fast enough when we learned that the Durham, NC-based colonial recently hit the market. Wed, 08 Jul 2020 - 67 - 66. Which Property Brothers Home Is Your Fave? Plus, Has COVID-19 Ruined the Open Floor Plan Trend?
Open floor plans have been the amenity of choice for many home buyers and renters for years. It’s often touted in listing details online. Turn on any HGTV show and you’ll hear a home makeover star talk about knocking down walls and opening up the layout. But living through the COVID-19 pandemic has people rethinking the practicality of an open floor plan. With so many of us working, studying, and schooling from home, having everyone in the same room—all day every day—can get a little … old. Taking conference calls or finishing up an important project can be challenging if you can hear your partner doing their work in the exact same room. This new work-school-live-from-home situation has us thinking: is the open floor plan over? We dive into it on this episode of “House Party.” Other topics we discuss this week include: Two vastly different homes (one in Los Angeles and one in Nashville) designed by the Property Brothers that hit the market this week Home improvement and design advice we learned from our dads A $7.5 million-dollar glass house in Dallas for sale This week’s celebrity real estate winner and loser Ready to listen? Wed, 10 Jun 2020 - 65 - Special Episode: How One Man Lives Alone in a Ghost Town During the Coronavirus Pandemic
Over the last few months, with social distancing and the Covid-19 pandemic, we’ve been really curious about how people have been spending their time at home and getting through everything. One of the craziest stories we heard is about Brent Underwood, the owner of the infamous abandoned ghost town called Cerro Gordo in California. Essentially, Brent has been sheltering in place, solo, in the ghost town for the last three months. So what’s it like to be living in a ghost town, by yourself, during a global pandemic? How does Brent spend his days? Why did he buy the ghost town in the first place? And, has he experienced any paranormal incidents since living there? (Spoiler alert: yes, he has!) We were lucky enough to talk with him on this special episode of "House Party."Ready to listen? Subscribe on Apple Podcasts, Google Play Music, Spotify, or wherever you get your podcasts. Wed, 03 Jun 2020 - 64 - 64. Can Pools Kill Coronavirus? Plus, How We Really Feel About Netflix's 'Selling Sunset'
Considering we practically eat, sleep, and breathe real estate, we thought it was high time we watched "Selling Sunset," a Netflix reality show that's billed as a mix between "Million-Dollar Listing" and "The Real Housewives" franchises. After sitting through all 32 minutes of the pilot episode, it's clear that the soapy reality series leans more toward the latter. Real estate and home design take a back seat to cat fights and drama. Were we into it, or did the lack of authenticity make watching it a painful experience? We give our honest thoughts on this week's episode.Other topics we discuss: Questlove launching virtual celebrity cooking show Our favorite and least favorite celebrity kitchens Is swimming in a pool the way to keep the coronavirus at bay? Thu, 28 May 2020 - 63 - 63. Will Sex Sell? Inside the BDSM Dungeon in Arkansas Home for Sale ; Rapper Tekashi 6ix9ine; Norman Lear; Tarek El Moussa
We wouldn't say unassuming suburban homes with BDSM dungeons are common, per se. But when one lands on the market, curiosity gets the better of us and we have to know the full story. That's why we went straight to the source and chatted with homeowners—and builders of the dungeon—Shayne and Nifer McKinney of Van Buren, AR. They divulged all the intimate details about their secret space, their motivation for moving, and their ultimate dream of hosting a home renovation show with an emphasis on building BDSM dungeons in homes all around the country. The proposed title? "Working In the Kinks."Other stories we discussed this week: How rapper Tekashi 6ix9ine, who is supposedly in witness protection, had his cover blown. Thu, 21 May 2020 - 62 - 62. Easy Ways to Grow Veggies in Your Kitchen; a Baller Barndominium With Space to Spread Out
It's no secret that self-isolating during COVID-19 has turned our at-home DIY endeavors into social media stars. In the beginning weeks of quarantine, you couldn't scroll a hot second on Instagram without seeing at least one sourdough starter. And now? It's all about the greenery. With grocery store produce supplies limited—and nothing but time on our hands—everybody we know is growing their own herbs and veggies. And some are so ridiculously easy that you just need a glass of water. We discuss the easiest ones to grow right at home so you never have to hit up the farmer's market again. Other topics we cover: The stylish "barndominium" outside Omaha, NE, that just might change the way you view rustic living. We reach into our "mailbox" and answer a listener question about the penalties of not paying your mortgage during COVID-19. Wed, 13 May 2020 - 61 - 61. Kylie Jenner Buys $36.5M Mansion; 'Fixer Upper' Faceless Bunker Recap; Haunted House Livestream
Would you move to Tulsa, OK, for $10,000? In this especially sketchy time, when people are craving more space and a lower cost of living, Americans (with remote jobs) are actually considering taking the monetary grant that cities like Tulsa and Topeka, KS, are offering. We decided we wouldn't do it for $10,000, but we name our prices on this week's episode of "House Party."Other topics we discuss: The owners of the real-life house that inspired "The Conjuring" will be shamelessly hosting a paid paranormal livestream inside the house with a group of renowned ghost hunters. We continue our series of "Fixer Upper" episode recaps by covering the infamous (and awkwardly built) Faceless Bunker house. And, as always, we name this week's celebrity real estate winners and losers. Ready to listen? Subscribe on Apple Podcasts, Google Play Music, Spotify, or wherever you get your podcasts.
