Inside today's Locked on Canadiens A story broke over the weekend relating to Marc Bergevin and his long-standing grudge with the Montreal Canadiens alumni. It's been a known thing that many of the Canadiens former players felt like they were frozen out from the team while Bergevin was GM, something that has changed under the tenure of Jeff Gorton and Kent Hughes. However, this story has taken another twist, with Bergevin apparently being upset and barring two club legends from being in the same spaces as the current team. Scott's not having it, and has plenty of thoughts about the whole alleged ordeal. The team announced they signed goaltender Kasimir Kaskisuo to an AHL contract for the rest of the season. Inside today's Locked on Canadiens It was a weekend to forget for the Montreal Canadiens as they came up just short against the Dallas Stars on Saturday, before getting blown out by the St. Louis Blues on Sunday. While their loss to the Stars was what many considered a "good loss", their game against the Blues left much to be desired where they suffered two more injuries in a blowout loss. Scott and Laura recap the weekend, with the greatness from Juraj Slafkovsky and Nick Suzuki, to the disappointment from the team in yet another back to back game. Perhaps the worst part of the weekend for the Canadiens is that the team suffered three more injuries in the two games they played. Rafaël Harvey-Pinard will miss 4-6 weeks with a knee injury, while Jordan Harris is listed as day to day after suffering a head injury against St. Louis. Most concerning however, is Kaiden Guhle leaving the game against the Blues late and his status being up in the air for the upcoming week. Scott and Laura discuss what the Habs can do to fill the gaps in, while also allowing the Laval Rocket to keep themselves afloat in the AHL playoff chase. Finally, the hosts wrap up the show with some good news! Both Logan Mailloux and Juraj Slafkovsky have taken a tremendous forward step this year, with the latter looking extremely comfortable on the Habs top line, and riding a fantastic run of form. As for Mailloux he's matching Shane Wright's production, while playing as a defenceman on a team that has struggled for consistency for parts of this season. Also Owen Beck and Lane Hutson continue to shine after World Juniors, and that should excite Habs fans everywhere. Inside today's Locked on Canadiens The Montreal Canadiens finally snapped their losing ways with a 4-3 win over the New York Islanders in Patrick Roy's return to Montreal as Islanders coach. A hot power play saw goals from both Nick Suzuki and Sean Monahan, plus an incredible effort from Cole Caufield give the Habs a 3-0 lead. It looked like Montreal was set to easily snap their losing streak before a match penalty for Brendan Gallagher turned things on its head. While the Islanders battled back to tie the game, a late goal from Sean Monahan and some incredible work from Samuel Montembeault salvaged a regulation win for the Habs. The hosts however are extremely upset with Brendan Gallagher, whose hit to the head of Adam Pelech forced his team to kill a five-minute power play off. It resulted in the Islanders tying the game, and forced Samuel Montembeault to be near-superhuman to end the game. Scott and Laura debate how long they think Gallagher should be suspended for, and how long they think the Department of Player Safety will actually suspend him for this weekend. Inside today's Locked on Canadiens: After a dreadful effort against the Ottawa Senators the Montreal Canadiens needed a bounceback and in their way was the Boston Bruins on Saturday night. Through two periods the Habs were going blow for blow with one of the best teams in the NHL, and then the wheels fell off in a big way as they lost 9-4. With a Senators rematch looming on Tuesday and Patrick Roy arriving on Long Island, how can the Canadiens get right in a crucial week? Then, it's Three Up, Three Down! On the falling list is unsurprisingly the Habs defence which hasn't helped the goaltenders in the recent run of defeats and will need to shape up quickly before the season starts spiraling. Related to that, Scott has some questions of Martin St. Louis and his handling of the Habs loss to the Bruins. Finally on the down list, the Senators organization and how they behaved in a heated series over the weekend against the Laval Rocket, including one of the players choosing to attack a goalie. On the flipside, Scott has plenty of praise for members of the Rocket team, as unexpected names and two hot goaltenders helped to extend a point streak to nine straight games in the AHL. Also rising and rising fast with the Trade Deadline right around the corner is Sean Monahan, who posted three assists in the loss to the Bruins and is turning himself into a highly coveted option for playoff teams. Then, there's the red-hot form of Cole Caufield, which is great news for the Habs as it would appear their top winger is rounding back into his peak goalscoring form. Inside today's Locked on Canadiens Another great showing from Samuel Montembeault on Saturday night led to only a single point for the Habs as the Edmonton Oilers snagged an overtime win at the Bell Centre. Despite a strong showing on the defensive side of the puck, the Habs managed just one goal off the stick of Cole Caufield on the power play. The game is most notable though for the NHL debut of top prospect Joshua Roy, who was recalled from the AHL on Friday night. In the down section, Josh Anderson makes a return after struggling to make an impact in games where the Montreal Canadiens absolutely needed him to, before eventually landing on the injured list once more. There's also a rare FOUR UP week, because there's so much good to cover in Montreal, despite the recent losses. First up is the Laval Rocket, and namely their AHL All-Star in Logan Mailloux. It was mentioned earlier in the week, but Scott wants to go over his progression from the start of the season and how he's on exactly the path you want to see in a league for development. He's been helped out a lot by the emergence of the veterans on the team like Philippe Maillet, Lias Andersson and even fellow prospects like William Trudeau. Scott breaks down his best from the Rocket in the last week. The prospects are in focus in a big way for the Habs fandom this week, as Owen Beck's trade to Saginaw seems to have re-invigorated his game to the tune of nine points in three games for the Spirit. What has brought his game back in such a big way, well playing on a super team helps, but Beck himself also deserves a ton of praise. Inside today's Locked on Canadiens The Montreal Canadiens stole a 4-3 win from the Dallas Stars on Tuesday night thanks to a monster showing from Samuel Montembeault in net, and a multi-point effort from Nick Suzuki. Juraj Slafkovsky was again a dominant force for the Habs and the catalyst in helping the team overcome a disastrous start to the game, but it was a lot closer than it should have been in the closing minutes. Despite leading by three goals, the Habs still couldn't close it out without needing Montembeault to stand on his head three times over, but it's a win for a team that needed one and the hosts have your recap! It was an insane day at the World Juniors tournament as the elimination round began with Filip Mesar willing the Slovaks to overtime before falling to the Finns and ending the tournament for the Habs prospect. Canada soon followed suit as the team imploded early against Czechia before mounting a comeback, only to give up the game-winning goal with 11 seconds left on the clock. The United States won with relative ease over Latvia while Sweden needed a dubious penalty and overtime to sneak by Switzerland. Scott and Laura go over what was a truly wild day, and especially what went wrong for the losing teams. The Habs win over Dallas wasn't without its major losses however as Josh Anderson appeared to suffer a bad lower body injury late in the third period. While it's unclear how serious the injury is, the Habs are down to ten healthy forwards as they fly back to Montreal for a game against the Sabres. Inside today's Locked on Canadiens With a chance to end 2023 on a high note, the Montreal Canadiens lost two different, but equally frustrating games to the Florida Panthers and Tampa Bay Lightning. While the team struggled against Florida, they hammered Tampa Bay, and yet came away with zero total points in the standings for it. Scott looks at where that leaves the Habs in the Atlantic Division standings, and more importantly where does it leave the in the 2024 NHL Draft Lottery? Then, it's the return of Three Up, Three Down! Officiating at World Juniors this year has been a hotly contested issue, with both penalties that have been called, and even more so, the ones that haven't in the tournament. Scott looks at what the IIHF has generally gotten right, and where they're struggling this year. Also on the down list, Scott has a bone to pick with Martin St-Louis and his late game player usage, particularly in the loss to the Tampa Bay Lightning. Also, enough is enough and it's time for a change from Joel Armia. On the upside of the World Juniors, the 2022 Draft class continues to shine as Filip Mesar and Lane Hutson continue to add points to their resume, with Hutson piling up three assists in a win over Slovakia. He isn't the only young defender in the Habs organization who is stacking up points either this week as both Arber Xhekaj and Logan Mailloux have become a driving force behind a Rocket resurgence to end 2023. Inside today's Locked on Canadiens The Montreal Canadiens lost a hard-fought game to the Carolina Hurricanes, overcoming a multi-goal deficit in the first period and pushing the Canes to their limit before losing 5-3. The Montreal Canadiens announced a pair of special nights for the upcoming month of January. Inside today's Locked on Canadiens As the hosts predicted, the Montreal Canadiens and Minnesota Wild played an extremely dumb game of hockey on Thursday night loaded with bad defence, ugly goals and unexpected fights. A slow start from the Habs saw them claw out of a two-goal deficit to tie the game, before a bad penalty by Joel Armia saw them surrender another power play goal against, before Juraj Slafkovsky tied it late to force overtime. Inside today's Locked on Canadiens The Montreal Canadiens completed their season sweep of the Winnipeg Jets with a 3-2 overtime win on Monday night. Another great showing from Josh Anderson and a bounceback from Jake Allen helped the Habs steal two points from the Jets. Justin Barron overcame some rough moments to get the game-winning goal, and while the Habs are riding a nice little point streak, there are some worrying signs around the team as a whole after this game. Scott breaks it all down and more! Also of note is that the NHL holiday roster freeze kicks in on December 19th at midnight, with the Habs in the crosshairs of many possible trade rumours what does this mean for their potential moves? There is also prospects who have been recalled from the Laval Rocket that could be impacted, and it's a big test for Kent Hughes to navigate. The Habs play three more games before the freeze is lifted while the Rocket also have three games to play during it. Can the Habs and Rocket work through this roster shuffle to get both teams players that they need in the coming weeks? Finally, speaking of the Laval Rocket, a new face appeared at practice for them today in the form of a veteran goalie on a try-out deal. 30 year old Kasimir Kaskisuo joined the team today after signing a PTO earlier in the day, giving the Rocket a prominent AHL veteran for the first time this season. Inside today's Locked on Canadiens On Saturday night the Montreal Canadiens found the perfect remedy for some of their ailing players as they dismantled the New York Islanders in a 5-3 win. Joel Armia, Josh Anderson, Cole Caufield and Christian Dvorak all had goals in the impressive win, highlighted by a huge four-goal second period. Despite a nervous ending, it was a statement win from the Habs, and hopefully a building block for several of the goal scorers as well. Then, it's Monday and that means Three Up, and Three Down! On the up side of thing, the Habs offence is slowing waking up over the course of this week, and a big part of that is from two large players on the ice. Both Josh Anderson and Juraj Slafkovsky starred against the Islanders in a big way, and that should be some welcomed news for many Habs fans as the end of 2023 approaches. Also on the rise, rookie forward Riley Kidney with the Laval Rocket. While Joshua Roy is grabbing most of the attention, Kidney is slowing starting to find his own form and develop into a prospect worth following in the AHL. On the flipside of things, the Laval Rocket continue to lack any sort of consistency in their play, losing 7-1 after pulling off a stunning last-minute win the night before. Strauss Mann hasn't been able to hold the net, while the defence continues to struggle badly. Scott also has some issues with how the Montreal Canadiens are handling call ups, as valuable prospects sit in the pressbox instead of playing games at either level. Also struggling badly, the Pittsburgh Penguins...That's it, the hosts just wanted to point out that Pittsburgh might be on the cusp of an incredibly fraudulent season after losing 7-0. Inside today's Locked on Canadiens The Montreal Canadiens got another rude awakening at the hands of the LA Kings on Thursday night, dropping their second game of the year to the California club. While the Habs came out strong, and looked like a much more composed team, the Kings simply overwhelmed them once again. Inside today's Locked on Canadiens The NHL announced the expected salary cap for next season is going to rise by just over four millions dollars, providing a nice boost in potential cap space for teams around the league. With some new extensions kicking in for the Canadiens next year, and some bigger contracts coming off the books it means the Canadiens might finally be able to move into the next steps of rebuilding. What does the Habs cap situation look like going into next year with the rising cap? Then it's Three Up, and Three Down! Despite the big win on Monday over Seattle, Scott has had some concerns about player deployment going into the rest of the season. Even with Slafkovsky moving to the top line, Martin St. Louis has defaulted to veterans in that spot, and both hosts wants to see more of the young blood given those chances as the rebuild progresses. Also, the Laval Rocket have lost seven straight games and despite each game being close, the results aren't going their way. Is the lack of consistent goaltending the problem, or is something else holding the team back? On the upside of things, Samuel Montembeault has cemented himself as the guy in net for the Montreal Canadiens. With a 4-1-0 record and quietly settling in as one of the most underrated goalies in the league, Montembeault finds himself firmly on the up list this week. Joining him is a pair of Habs forwards who have been under an insane amount of pressure this year to produce in Josh Anderson and Juraj Slafkovsky. The points aren't rolling in quite yet for both, but the process towards improvement is showing plenty in both players, especially Slafkovsky. For Anderson his newfound patience is showing, and has seemingly put him on the right track to getting his season in order. Inside today's Locked on Canadiens It was a busy end of the week for the Montreal Canadiens and their fans with both good news and bad news across the board. First was the new contract for goaltender Samuel Montembeault, signing for three more years at 3.15 million a season. Scott and Laura think that this puts an end to the trade rumours surrounding Montembeault, but will throw gas on the fire for the other two netminders still on the depth chart. Then the bad news came quickly, as Alex Newhook left the game against the Florida Panthers with a lower body injury after being checked into the side of the net. Newhook needed help to get off the ice, and was revealed to be out for at least the next three months with a high ankle sprain. The hosts debate if the team needs to add a forward in a possible goalie trade in the coming week. Finally, despite a respectable 1-1-1 record on the week the Canadiens failed to impress overall and it's leaving the hosts frustrated. They want to see Martin St-Louis give more opportunities to players like Jesse Ylönen instead of promoting veterans who are at their ceiling already.
