- 197 - 184: The INXS Deep Tracks Reveal: Interactive Show.
Continuing our musical themes of recent weeks, we at last get the opportunity to finalize INXS: Access all Areas “Deep Cut” tracks Spotify Playlist that highlights the best of the best iconic “album tracks” that never made it to a “singles release”. “No filler, all killer” is a tagline that would adequately apply to INXS over their ten albums with Michael Hutchence. They never rested on their laurels when it came to putting an album together often having over 30 songs to choose from when it came to finalising the final track listing. So in todays final compilation, Bee and I retrieve from all of the previous album review episodes, our favourite deep cuts and assemble them into a 36 song “Quadruple Album” tour-de-force playlist with themes for our 4 sided compilation. We want this to be a truly interactive episode and ask you to open up the Spotify playlist below and embrace these wonderful tracks in “real time” as we discuss them with you. In this modern era where musical acts seem only be able to conjure middling singles, we celebrate the mighty INXS’ greatness once again with what could be taglined “the best of the rest”!!! https://open.spotify.com/playlist/5Ky3JCzStF4VOGneEEuHv9?si=-8fAjeR9RUe6hDDZtJAWdQ For more information about the podcast and how you can join this "Strangest party" click here https://www.inxsaccessallareas.com/
Sun, 28 Apr 2024 - 1h 22min - 196 - Epi 183 “The Swing 40th Anniversary”
We are privileged to be joined by patrons Darren Joseph, Brett Williams and Dr Jim along with good friend of the podcast Darren Jones, to discuss and celebrate the 40th anniversary of INXS’ commercial breakout album, The Swing! Musical tendencies and tastes often formulate during those halcyon teenage years and today’s panel deep dive into the joys of this album evoke true feelings of nostalgia, sentimentality and happiness. We discuss which songs resonated upon release in 1984 and still to this day, the importance of VHS/Video on each songs impact and the album cover/contents that were of its time. Having sold over 2,500,000 copies globally, we tackle the albums mysterious initial commercial failings in the USA market which were likely due to the albums overtly political and racially charged lyrics that stalled radio and MTV support. That aside, American fans post Kick went back and re-discovered this gem leading to platinum status accreditation and embrace songs such as Original Sin, Burn for You and I Send a Message when played “live” over the years. Having previously reviewed The Swing album in episode 13 and explored (Ep. 68, 121 and 122) with Nick Launay (Producer) and Philip Mortlock (A&R), this episode is a true joy and trip down memory lane to a time and place where INXS raised their game from underground, alternative darlings to true, versatile and musical players about to make their mark globally! Sun, 21 Apr 2024 - 1h 37min - 195 - Epi 182: Jon Stevens joins INXS
After confidence boosting performances with Terence Trent D'Arby, the Tim Rice Extravaganza and closing out the 2000 Olympic Games, INXS sought an old mate to take the frontman duties in ex Noiseworks lead singer, Jon Stevens. Having carved a 20 plus year career as a soloist, frontman and pivotal member of the 1992/93 Jesus Christ Superstar revival stage show throughout Australia, Jon’s credentials were bonafide and deserving. With domestic tours throughout Australia, subsequent ones to the USA, Latin America and Europe, it looked like INXS had overcome the inner uncertainty that plagued their previous 4 years. Armed with a plan to assert themselves across the globe in both a “live concert” and recording sense, optimism was high. Despite strong reviews of Jon’s contribution to the band particularly in the performing sense, Jon would get disheartened with the lack of band creativity in the studio. With the sole single “I Get Up” released in 2003 to coincide with the Rugby Union World Cup the only fresh material, Jon would decide to leave INXS to pursue his own musical interests. That aside, Jon’s contribution to the healing, morale and confidence for INXS to continue as a going concern entity cannot be underestimated and should be appreciated. We also go back to the year 1998 with a little pleasure and pain segment highlighting the sheer disparity of great and not so great songs that permeated the airwaves. So sit back, pour yourself a favourite tipple and enjoy a jam packed episode 182 of INXS: Access all Areas. Plus the all important comp comes to an end and we see who will win the 2 tickets to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. for more info check out our website https://www.inxsaccessallareas.com/
Sun, 07 Apr 2024 - 1h 19min - 194 - Episode 181: INXS’ Most Impactful 25 Songs
Nobody loves a good list more than Haydn. In today’s episode of the INXS Access All Areas podcast, Bee allows him to indulge his longstanding wish to prosecute the case of which 25 INXS songs have had the most impact and importance within the cultural zeitgeist. With a recording career that started in 1980 via their eponymous debut album, and culminated in 2010’s Original Sin reworking of old material, the band has written over 300 songs. So determining the top 25 that will still resonate in 100 years was a massive undertaking with many songs landing at '26!' Impact and importance are different criteria to favourite or best song. It's about which 25 songs, more than others, resonate with the public consciousness, whether it's the charts, fan enjoyment, legacy, musicianship or simply propelled the band forward in their progression from Aussie touring band to international superstardom. So sit back, enjoy, agree, disagree, prosecute or revel in what might be our most controversial topic ever!!! Love and peace. Haydn and Bee. Entry to the Competition ends on 31st March. Thu, 28 Mar 2024 - 1h 39min - 193 - Episode 180: INXS Compilation Albums Part 2 / 2001-2002
In episode 131, we embarked on a deep dive into INXS compilation albums (1982’s INXSIVE and 1994 Greatest Hits) with attention and detail. In the 2001-2002 period, INXS Management undertook the release of two distinct compilation albums for two different regions. “Shine like it Does” under their USA label Rhino, a 42 song extravaganza covering 1979-1997 released primarily in the USA. Secondly, “The Years:1979-1997” for their Australian market, a 41 song deep dive catalogue representation covering their Australasian and global career. With the band in a holding pattern, both releases served to remind old fans and new ones, the deep musical contribution INXS made to the sonic soundscapes since the inception. Both these releases overcame the shortfalls of 1994’s Greatest Hits releases in the USA, UK and Australia respectively and provided true fans with a thorough representation of their singles, appropriate album deep cuts and liner notes within to die for! Often, complication albums can be a cynical record company cash grab exploiting each albums continued sale prospects. Pleasingly, this isn’t one of these exercises as both discs cover nearly 95% of the band’s recording successes. So for collectors without these double discs, for those unaware of their existence and to those who share a fondness and musical memory of these immense releases, do yourself a favour and listen in as we dive deep on all the interesting anecdotes and facts about these two mighty releases. Also listen out to our Fan Engagement section, with Bee & Danyelle, when they thank the fans who have contributed to the socials over the past week. Sun, 17 Mar 2024 - 1h 02min - 190 - 178 Mark Pellington Part 2 'The Phone Call'
INXS: Access all Areas listeners were given a unique treat last week that being Part One of Mark Pellington whose industry credits go far beyond the Beautiful Girl video. Left with a cliffhanger as Mark escalated his frustration upon hearing INXS were not in fact, in the Rock Hall of Fame, we share in Part two’s deep dive what that phone call entailed! Additionally, Mark opens up about how a personal family tragedy informed his artistic expression particularly in the year new millennium as he was increasingly chased by emerging artists such as The Fray, Keane, Kings of Leon, The Flaming Lips and The Dave Matthews Band. We get to hear Mark’s interesting foray into acting much at the behest of iconic filmmaker Cameron Crowe (eg. Fast Times at Ridgemont High, Jerry Maguire and Almost Famous). Plus continued admiration for the musicianship and excellence of INXS and how working with true superstars such as Michael Hutchence and Bono affected Mark as a Director. All that and a whole lot more as we for the rarest of times, welcome a secret third wheel to the hosting duties all the way from Ottawa Canada! Sun, 03 Mar 2024 - 1h 14min - 189 - Epi 177: Mark Pellington; Film Director of Beautiful Girl. Part One
Famed USA Video, Film, Doco and TV Director, Mark Pellington joins INXS: Access all Areas to dive deep on his fantastic video for 1993 INXS single “Beautiful Girl” amidst many other broader conversations. Having gotten his start via MTV in 1983, Mark was at the forefront of when the video clip explosion was at the epicenter of the watching audience zeitgeist. Working initially with artists such as Leonard Cohen, De La Soul and PM Dawn, it was his future work with Pearl Jam’s “Jeremy” video that brought Mark’s unbridled talents into the forefront of the music industry heavy hitters. As such, he went on a peerless run Directing for U2 (One), Public Enemy (Shut em Down), REM (Drive), Alice In Chains (Rooster) plus Springsteen, Keane, The Flaming Lips and obviously our beloved INXS. Interestingly, it was INXS that would bring him his sole Grammy nomination eventually losing out to Peter Gabriel’s “Steam” video (Urghhhh). Mark generously opens up how personal grief informed much of creative ideas and we get to dive deep on his work with other artists, feature films and his love of the Australian music industry culminating a cliffhanger moment regarding INXS’ lack of recognition by the Rock Hall of Fame Committee that shall leave you clamouring for an early release of Part Two. So sit back and enjoy the iconic words of Mark Pellington. https://www.inxsaccessallareas.com/
Fri, 16 Feb 2024 - 59min - 188 - Epi 176: “INXS face the new Millennium”!
With the year 2000 upon us, the world was entering an exciting new century. Music, cinema, pop culture and the arts were evolving and INXS were starting to take bigger steps in a world without Michael Hutchence. With the dust settling on Michael’s posthumous album release, INXS took the left field move of signing up to the Tim Rice Spectacular Concert Series through Australia. Joining recognized artists such as Iva Davies (Icehouse), David Essex (Rock On) and a bevy of renowned Australian artists re-interpreting Tim’s amazing back catalogue of songs. With confidence slowly returning as an entity, the band continued to surprise teaming up with Jon Stevens (formerly Noiseworks) for two impromptu but sold out gigs in Melbourne and Sydney. With fans traveling as far as Chicago and the UK to attend these gigs, the level of passion and pride at seeing a full-set INXS gig again was palpable! Combined with some private corporate gigs, the band made their long awaited international return headlining the closing ceremony of the 2000 Olympic Games with a rollicking updated version of What you Need that had the crowd on their feet. So with small steps, INXS were getting their mojo back in a steady and incremental way against the odds. We are pleased to have famed Director and true auteur Alex Proyas on today’s episode of INXS: Access all Areas to share fascinating insights and anecdotes around the filming in Coober Pedy, South Australia of “Kiss the Dirt” video in early 1986. ARIA award nominated, this led to iconic videos for the emerging Crowded House band’s “Don’t dream it’s over” and “Better be home soon” hits that created the impetus for Alex to go overseas and pursue his ultimate passion being “feature films”. A true sci-fi disciple, Alex went onto work with famed actors Brandon Lee, William Hurt, Kiefer Sutherland, Will Smith, Chadwick Bozeman, Jennifer Connelly and Nicolas Cage in iconic productions such as The Crow, Dark City, I Robot and Gods of Egypt, Alex is a true surrealist and auteur to his craft of making meaningful and impactful cinematic art for all the right reasons. Sun, 21 Jan 2024 - 37min - 184 - Epi 173: Michael Hutchence Solo Album: Part 2 - Song by song review
Welcome to 2024 to all of our wonderful bronze, silver, gold and platinum patrons and loyal listeners. We kick off the new year (pardon the pun) with Part 2 our important deep dive into Michael Hutchence’s posthumous solo release with a song-by-song review. Following part one, we see how Michael stretches his musical capabilities and range both lyrically and sonically to great effect. Haunting, open and often literal, Michael’s lyrics have never been more specific and brutal. We discuss each track and rate them accordingly, with our unique criterion. Sonically lush, guitar-wise, often dirty and emotionally heartbreaking, I recommend listening to this album for the healing and the true insight into what Michael was truly feeling in his final years. This episode of the INXS AAA podcast is completed with additional news items and details about our competitions just launched. We nudge the 100-minute mark, so this action-packed episode may be your own two parter! We struggled to contain our enthusiasm and passion for what was a truly meaningful project for Michael, Danny Saber and Andy Gill. Plus don't miss out on how to win some fantasic INXS memorbilla or 2 Tickets to go to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Induction. WhooHoo! Sun, 14 Jan 2024 - 1h 42min - 183 - Epi 172: Michael Hutchence Solo Album Part One.
After 2 years of mourning, copious amounts of gossip innuendo and grief, finally INXS and Michael Hutchence fans have something meaningful and strangely healing to celebrate. This posthumous release of 13 unique and varied tracks were originally the brainchild of a phone call (make that two) from Michael in 1995 to legendary UK Gang of Four band leader Andy Gill. With the duo residing in the comfortable, calm and tranquil surrounds of the South of France, an environment of immense creativity and teamwork was established leading to a vast amount of songs and demos laid down. Knowing Co-Production support and proper studio surrounds were required, enter famed US alternative Producer and musician Danny Saber plus both the legendary Peter Gabriel Real World Studios amidst many others. The songs contained a lyrical honesty, earnestness and soundscape unheard of from Michael before, which given his 1995 surroundings, was to be expected. With no timelines or management interference, this self-financed labour of love had no release date time pressures, hence was parked when Michael returned to INXS commitments in 1996 and 1997. But with Michael’s unfortunate passing in November 1997, the integrity of these recordings were salvaged by an “angel from Los Angeles” in Danny Saber to whom we shall all be eternally grateful. So sit back and enjoy what a monumental task it was to simply get this album to the release phase plus the circumstances and facts that lead to one of Michael’s greatest recording efforts. Love and peace Join the rest of the INXS uber fans https://www.inxsaccessallareas.com https://www.change.org/p/induct-inxs
Tue, 26 Dec 2023 - 1h 01min - 182 - Epi 171: INXS 1999 with Sananda Maitreya/ Terence Trent D’Arby
Having had over 18 months to process the passing of Michael Hutchence, INXS were presented with the unique opportunity to spearhead the opening of Stadium Australia. The venue that would in the year 2000, be the home of the Sydney Olympic Games. With ex Australian cricketing icon Dean Jones putting the deal together, INXS were proud to be the lead musical act that preceded the Australian Socceroos playing the FIFA All-Stars on June 12th, 1999 with over 90,000 spectators packing the venue. All they needed was a lead singer!!! Easier said than done. Enter famed USA soul, pop and R&B vocalist Sananda Maitreya then know as Terence Trent Darby, who some 10 years earlier, “came like a comet” (hello The Waterboys) onto the music scene with his 10,000,000 + Introducing the Hardline debut album. Was this to be a one-off? A rent-try-buy arrangement or some other modus operandi. Tune in to INXS: Access all Areas to find out all the answers to the above questions and also embrace in what was an unlikely musical union, albeit just for one night!! Love and peace https://www.inxsaccessallareas.com

Sun, 10 Dec 2023 - 1h 15min - 180 - Epi 169: INXS “1998- And then there were 5!”
When a family, a band and a fan base lose somebody as omnipresent as Michael Hutchence, it’s inevitable that a period of uncertainty, angst and healing are required. That’s what 1998 was for INXS as each member had to come to terms with their lives irrevocably changing forever. So in today’s INXS AAA podcast episode, we examine the environment and circumstances that faced the band, management, the fans and upsurge in tabloid media as we tried to make sense in a world without Michael Hutchence. Would the band tour again? Change their name? Release any recordings with Michael? Get a new singer? Have a tribute concert for Michael? Or even talk to the media sharing their feelings and thoughts on Michael’s passing. All of these questions and a whole lot more are examined and discussed in-depth, so sit back and deep dive with us on INXS: Access all Areas Episode 169. Sat, 02 Dec 2023 - 1h 01min - 179 - Epi 168: R.I.P Michael Hutchence 22/11/1997
It’s that unfortunate time of the year where we pause, commiserate and commemorate the passing of Michael Kelland Hutchence. Iconic singer, loyal band mate, friend, father and idol to many. Unlike other years, our anthology podcast has caught up with the 1997 period and as difficult as it is for us and our loyal listeners, we need to recount the events that preceded and proceeded that fateful day. We do so with compassion, earnestness, regret and heartfelt sadness, but importantly stay on point with facts not solacious innuendo or clickbait. Importantly, we release this episode on the exact day some 26 years later and hope that talking about Michael’s loss does some good for those struggling to reconcile this tragic event. There weren’t many men's support initiatives or mental health awareness and wellbeing programs back in 1997. So we hope that for anyone struggling in their own day to day world, you seek the necessary assistance. With two weeks off, Bee and I are back with renewed vigor and passion as we welcome to the show Shaun and Scott from Voxneon. Interestingly, we take a deep dive with both Shaun and Scott into the magic of early synth soundscapes of the emerging 1980’s, highlighting Gary Numan, Simple Minds, Icehouse, Human League and Kraftwerk. The duo’s love for INXS shines through as we dive deep on the bands complex and versatile sonics and legendary vocal phrasing of Michael. Their passion and respect comes through. We even had time to celebrate (or commiserate) on 1999 with a “Pleasure or Pain” snapshot that doesn’t hold back on what was a fascinating end of the century time in music. Sun, 08 Oct 2023 - 1h 08min - 174 - Epi163: Mark Pope Interview, part one
They say behind every great band, there is a great team, and this is definitely the case with INXS. The world knows about the profound influence Chris Murphy had on the band becoming an international juggernaut. What is less known is the immense workload and influence that Mark Pope had on supporting and creating an infrastructure and pathway to allow INXS to do what they do best: play live and thrive! Recruited by Chris Murphy in the late 1970’s, Mark cut his teeth looking after luminary Aussie acts such as The Angels and Cold Chisel. With obvious passion and dedication, he aligned with Chris to create the legendary Australian Made Concert series over the Summer of 1986/87 in all capital cities. Never one to rest on his laurels, Mark managed Jimmy Barnes, headed up the ARIA Awards Hall of Fame committee, resuscitated Warner’s Australia in the 1990’s and in recent times set up Helium Records. In a modern world where streaming, corporate suits and cliché recording productions reign with often soulless results, Mark Pope is a true linchpin of what’s great about INXS and Australian music heritage. https://www.inxsaccessallareas.com/ Jon Farriss playing Drums with Gary Gibb on Guitar
Fri, 29 Sep 2023 - 1h 07min - 173 - Epi 162: SHOWDOWN—Kiss the Dirt v. To Look at You
With a quick turnaround between episodes, we want to get back to basics and pay homage to the songs that make INXS music so fantastic and memorable. In our first ever “Song Showdown”, Bee takes the red corner and myself the blue corner as we face off in our first musical debate about the virtues of these two songs that represented the third singles released, respectively, from Shabooh Shoobah and Listen Like Thieves. “To Look at You”, a new-wave paean to mystery love, is sung and played with a mood unlike any INXS song ever recorded to this point. “Kiss the Dirt” begins with a subtly-restrained intro with evocative outback-inspired keyboards leading to a vocal and guitar escalation that culminates with an early grunge-type payoff. Both great songs are, musically and sonically, diametrically opposed. Shall Bee make the case? Or shall Haydn make his case with prosecutorial bombardment? Sun, 17 Sep 2023 - 38min - 172 - Epi 161: Keeping the Music Alive! With INXSive 🎸
November 11th, 2012, otherwise known as Remembrance Day in the Commonwealth countries, was the last time INXS performed live. Bowing out in their hometown of Perth, it was with much regret and sorrow that INXS, the live touring entity, was no longer. That aside, after thousands of electrifying performances across the globe over 35 years, INXS has inspired countless tribute acts in America, Argentina, Brazil, England, Russia, and their homeland of Australia—each with a united desire to keep these epic songs alive for past and current generations to enjoy on nights out with friends and loved ones (pardon the pun)! It’s not easy covering such an iconic band insofar as balancing the craft of imitation, acknowledgement and expertise with spontaneity, experimentation and individuality when performing INXS songs. However, many of these wonderful acts do so with great panache and style, creating pure joy to the earballs and eyeballs (hello ladies). Today we get to check-in with longtime lead singer of INXSIVE (Melbourne) David Graham, plus Don’t Change Ultimate INXS’s Blair Dwyer, who both articulate tremendously the art of paying homage without bordering on twee or cringe. So, in a world where the real INXS no longer tour, we are thankful to all the tribute acts globally who put themselves out there with true passion and heart! If you want to know more check out our website and the page on INXS Tribute Bands.
Tue, 12 Sep 2023 - 1h 11min - 171 - Epi 160: Michael Hutchence, The “Quiet Activist” with Paulie Stewart
It was cool in the 1980s as a rock star to loudly proclaim and attach yourself to worthy causes—think Sting (Brazilian rain forests, Russian leaders), Little Stevie (Artists Against Apartheid) and Bono/U2 (Chile, Ireland, drugs, September 11, Greenpeace, and the vegan hippos of Botswana North, East and South 😜). Less virtue-signalling were INXS, who quietly attached themselves to the people of Kuwait, the anti-nuclear movement, and Amnesty International. What was even less known publicly were the efforts of Michael Hutchence, whose links to the East Timorese/Indonesian incursion were done with sincerity, true altruism, and often, anonymity. Today we are joined by Paulie Stewart, founder of seminal Melbourne 80’s band The Painters and Dockers. With links to the East Timorese conflict in 1975, the Indonesian invasion changed him and his family’s lives forever with the tragic killing of his brother and four other journalists, known as the Balibo Five. This undeniable atrocity led to Michael and Paulie creating a true kinship to the cause that Paulie recounts for us. We also have time for levity as we share the Painters and Dockers’ unique story and ascent to being inducted into the Victorian Music Hall of Fame. Forever quirky, subversive, effervescent, and challenging to society’s status quo, the Dockers are a true national treasure. So, sit back and savour the warm, giving, and generous words of Paulie Stewart in this unique episode of INXS Access All Areas. Bid here to win a signed copy of Rooms for The Memory 2023
Mon, 04 Sep 2023 - 1h 10min - 170 - Epi159: INXS Day with Ollie Olsen Interview
August 16th, 1977, was a pivotal day in world music as one legend Elvis Presley passed, whilst another was born: with 6 guys from the Northern Beaches of Sydney playing their first-ever gig as the Farriss Brothers! So, this episode is a special one where, in fan engagement, we acknowledge and highlight this fantastic 46-year anniversary; but, in the topic today, we help out a dear friend to Michael & Richard Lowenstein, the brilliant Ollie Olsen, with both a “record auction” and a “CD EP raffle” for the signed 2023 versions of “Rooms for the Memory”. In addition, we are pleased to share Jane Gazzo from Australian Music Vaults’ fantastic deep-dive interview with Ollie Olsen, a discussion that showcases the early days, his affinity with electronica and those special days working with Michael Hutchence. As Ollie is suffering from Multiple System Atrophy, a rare, terminal disease similar to Parkinson’s, we hope and trust the INXS community shall dig deep with these two special fundraising items. With 100% of all monies raised going to support Ollie, let’s show the music world just how important Ollie is and was to Michael Hutchence’s musical legacy. Love and Peace ✌️
Sun, 20 Aug 2023 - 1h 36min - 169 - Epi158: Part 2 “Michael’s best friend Greg Perano opens up”!
Hear Stories that you haven't heard before... INXS Access All Areas doubles down with the coda episode of ex-Hunters Collectors and best friend Greg Perano diving deep into his longtime friendship with kindred spirit Michael Hutchence. With a friendship dating back to pre-stardom INXS and the superstar status of Michael Hutchence, Greg fondly takes us back to a time and journey when true friendship was based on care, loyalty, mutual respect and plenty of scallywag moments between twenty-somethings then continued into the thirty-somethings. Michael’s love for true company from true hearts is never more apparent on this episode as we hear how Greg would get a late night call saying, “Come to Paris. A flight has been booked for you, Greg!” Or how Michael would always look out for those close or afar to ensure they were made to feel comfortable in his presence. The true notion of Australian mateship and brethren connections are wholeheartedly felt with every noun, verb and adjective when enunciated by Greg. Plus, we have a real intro and outro song treat that we’ve never done before in 157 episodes. So, sit back, grab a tasty beverage, a tissue or two plus your best headphones and relive one of life’s great friendships, audio-style! Fri, 11 Aug 2023 - 50min - 168 - Epi 157: Part 1 “Michael’s best friend Greg Perano opens up”!
Hear Stories that you haven't heard before... Greg Perano, a former member of the iconic Australian band Hunters and Collectors opens up about his long-time best friend Michael Hutchence in a revealing and heartfelt deep dive. As we commemorate Michael's legacy to INXS we are fortunate to have Greg for two episodes who goes behind the public image and occasional facade of Michael's persona to shed light on his true essence, spirit, wit, sense of humour and unrivalled loyalty to his inner circle. Joined also by Richard "Michael in Pictures" Simpkin, listeners shall get access to personal anecdotes, irreverent storylines and joyous moments recounted in a manner that only makes us miss Michael further. Delivered with both pathos and loving cheer, Greg had access to Michael's friendship unlike any other person on the planet hence his credentials to share and opine are beyond reproach. So sit back, be prepared to listen, laugh, lament but most importantly "love baby love' the true friendship of Michael Hutchence and Greg Perano! For more information check out our website. Sun, 06 Aug 2023 - 59min - 167 - Epi 156: Michael Hutchence’s Last Interview with Famed Aussie Journalist, Nui Te Koha
Only 4 days before the legendary Australian frontman for INXS took his own life, he conducted his final interview with an emerging writer and journalist for the Herald Sun newspaper, Nui Te Koha. Before boarding a flight from Los Angeles to his native hometown of Sydney, Michael carved a far different portrait as a man than the one Nui interviewed some 4 years earlier—all on the backend of some scathing personal and professional attacks from Fleet Street’s finest (not)! Nui captured a Michael who was raw, vulnerable and self-reflective against the initial expectations that it would be a shameless upcoming-tour-promotional puff piece. Contemplative, honest and somewhat melancholic, Nui captured publicly the true inner feelings Michael was possessing at a time when the “tall poppy syndrome” against the band was at its peak. We are fortunate enough for Nui to read out the quoted words of Michael, and they’re delivered with heartfelt pathos and pain. Please, if you’re feeling vulnerable and low after listening to this interview, reach out to loved ones and professionals who can help. I’m sure Michael would want that. Its a goodbye from me and its agoodbye from Bee, goodbye everybody see you next week. Sat, 29 Jul 2023 - 1h 12min - 166 - Epi 155: The Making of the Elegantly Wasted Video
As we tie our final bow on what was 1997’s Elegantly Wasted album release, we are delighted to be joined by video producer of the title track and first single release, the fantastic Bruce Haymer-Coleman. Having worked with other artists including Elton John, Depeche Mode, Donna Summer and The Cranberries, Bruce coordinated at very short notice the shoot for “Elegantly Wasted” in Los Angeles with only 4 days before the band were committed to flying to the UK. Creating the airport scene from scratch, the production of the set came together with urgency and expertise with a budget “INXS” (😜) of $150,000 in costs, but it shows in the ultimate release. A prolific video producer at the time, Bruce would often create 4-6 videos per month with a prior grounding working with famed directors George Lucas, Ridley Scott, David Fincher and Gore Verbinski—only proving that INXS were incredibly smart as to who they trusted turning their words and melodies into pictures! So, buckle up and sit back and hear from another major player in the music scene who loved working with the band and whose favourite track of theirs was “Devil Inside”! Tribute track, perhaps? Make sure you listen to the end! To learn more about Bruce Colemans book click here https://a.co/d/6PdTkZO
Sat, 22 Jul 2023 - 57min - 165 - Epi 154: Band and Fans talk Elegantly Wasted Tour
As we step back in time to 1997, we rejoice in both the fan and band experience as they share their experiences of being on tour again after a nearly 3-year hiatus. With patrons and listeners diving deep on what was the Elegantly Wasted Tour, we hear insights from gigs in Scotland, and Los Angeles amidst several prominent tour destinations but excitedly hear from the band as they did the media rounds between gigs. With excerpts from interviews including Jon Stewart and Rosie O’Donnell, we hear a band enjoying being back on stage together making vital and meaningful music. We also may get an answer from Michael Hutchence himself regarding the rumoured “better than Oasis” refrain that did the rounds during the band’s globetrotting endeavours. Excitedly, INXS Access All Areas gets all retro with the “Return of the Rant” and Bee’s 1997 “Pleasure and Pain” which has 90% bangers and only 10% clunkers! Additionally, we present an early news section with some genuine newsworthy nuggets. So, do yourself a favour and block out the world as it argues and enjoy some peace and happiness! Sat, 15 Jul 2023 - 1h 08min - 164 - Epi 153: Elegantly Wasted Tour, Michael’s Last Dance
Fresh from a two-and-a-half year touring hiatus, INXS were back, refreshed and vital, with a new World Tour and all ten studio albums to draw from as eager fans got their first chance to hear tracks off their latest album, Elegantly Wasted. Commencing with the fantastic INXS Rocks the Rockies in Aspen, Colorado, filmed for VH1, and taking in countries such as South Africa, France, Netherlands, England, Denmark, Germany, Canada and the USA, the band were in fine form and received great reviews. With a new album to promote, the band did several “live radio sessions” of 3-4 new songs that gave fans an appetite for what they would hear and see at forthcoming gigs. Combined with a variety of tracks off all albums except the first two, the band’s tour spanned the globe, playing 88 gigs in total. Sadly, it proved to be Michael Hutchence’s and the original lineup’s “Last Dance” together. With the tour culminating at the Coca-Cola Star Lake Amphitheater, Burgettstown, Pennsylvania, on September 27th, 1997, it would only be some two months later we lost dear Michael forever. So, as a tribute to the “original lineup,” we at INXS Access All Areas pay homage to six musical icons who came from humble beginnings down under to conquer the globe and do it their way!

Sun, 25 Jun 2023 - 1h 09min - 162 - Epi151: 40th Anniversary of US Festival, We Remember!
Memorial Day weekend 1983 was the second coming of the US Festival in Southern California, the brainchild of Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak who, after 1982’s test run, continued the mission of creating a community event combining technology with rock. With a 4-day festival over 7 days, the format commenced on Friday with the “new wave” acts as a theme. Australia was highly represented with The Divinyls, Men at Work and our very own INXS. Saturday was “heavy metal day” with Van Halen and Ozzie Osbourne spearheading, and Sunday “rock day” with a young U2 and Stevie Nicks paving the way for the main act David Bowie. The following Sunday concluded the event with Country Day. The importance of this event cannot be underestimated in inspiring future festivals such as Lollapalooza and Coachella, with over 1,100,000 fans attending these 1982/83 shows despite the collective apprehension after the infamous Altamont gig and Woodstock events some 15 years earlier. Despite losing millions of dollars, the US Festival gigs of 1982 and 1983 represented a true zeitgeist moment in time and created fan and artist experiences that are still eulogized 40 years later. Importantly for INXS, the festival represented a pivotal confidence boost where they went from the pubs & club gigs of 1000 people to 180,000 at said Festival. With Mark Opitz recently remastering INXS’ 9-song setlist performance, we urge you to check that out, plus sit back and dive deep into this nostalgic retrospective of an event that’s still admired 40 years later. You can now pre-order copies of 'Rooms for the Memory" on Vinyl and CD, using the link below. Mon, 12 Jun 2023 - 1h 09min - 161 - Epi 150: Ollie Olsen’s Manager Bruce Butler, Part 2
Having unearthed some first-to-be-heard gems regarding Michael, MAX Q and Ollie Olsen, part 2 of our Bruce Butler interview shares more updates and provides legacy to an important musical partnership: a union that combined Ollie’s avant garde with Michael’s pop sensibilities. Bruce shares wonderful anecdotes about a young Andrew Farriss’ insatiable appetite to absorb and borrow from his 10,000-deep record collection in his younger years, plus Bruce’s forays into music television production, with an interesting story about a newly single Andrew Ridgely, post-Wham! Forever erudite and passionate, Bruce showcases all that is wonderful and fascinating about the 1980’s and 90’s, pre-internet and social media, when live concerts, rock music and superstar icons deserved the title and accolades based on their “talent”, NOT the “clicks”. Fri, 02 Jun 2023 - 1h 13min - 160 - Epi 149: Ollie Olsen’s Manager Bruce Butler
We at INXS Access All Areas love producing every episode and sharing them with you, but sometimes a guest comes along that literally blows it “out of the park”. Bruce Butler, a true music heavyweight and Australian national treasure, is that guest! This two-part deep dive pays particular homage to the greatness of Ollie Olsen, who currently faces the biggest health fight of his life, plus the exciting re-imagined version of “Rooms for the Memory” (an initial 1987 solo number 11 hit for Michael Hutchence via the Dogs in Space soundtrack). Bruce opens up on this exciting initiative that coincidentally was re-recorded on January 22nd 2023 (sounds familiar), including an updated film clip by Richard Lowenstein, plus a cast of many Australian recording artist luminaries like Adalita, Mick Harvey and Andrew Duffield. With a goal of raising funds for Ollie, this exciting project shall see an international release in July and a possible in-store live performance launch. Having also managed The Church, launched Virgin Records in Australia, and set up iconic shows here such as The Factory and Countdown Revolution, Bruce’s integrity to project and artist selection is exceptional. Bruce’s revelations about meeting Michael Hutchence as teenagers in Sydney, the missing master recordings of Max Q and the plethora of fantastic anecdotes throughout his career make these two episodes a NOT-TO-BE-MISSED experience. Sat, 29 Apr 2023 - 1h 08min - 156 - Epi 145: INXS Burst Their Own Bubble
With 30 years upon us since April 1993, it harks back to an anniversary period where INXS no longer felt controlled by the record company and commercial management interference. Thus, they embarked on one of the more daring and “punk-style” initiatives With Welcome to Wherever You Are barely seven months old, and with a plethora of new material from the Full Moon, Dirty Hearts recording sessions, INXS commenced a scaled-back, stripped-down and back-to-basics tour of clubs, pubs, and Universities in Australia and then Europe. Jumping off the cliché humdrum of album, world stadium tour, and promo press junkets, the band was excited to get back to basics: record more, tour less, and enjoy the purity of making vital music together. So, for the critics who saw smaller venues as a sign of a band’s popularity waning: dig a little deeper and you’ll find them recapturing artistic freedom and bursting the bubble of external industry expectations by “doing it their way”! Sat, 08 Apr 2023 - 08min - 154 - Epi 144: From AC/DC to INXS/ Interview with Michael Browning
Michael Browning is a seminal giant in the Australian and worldwide music and entertainment business, having been at the forefront and emergence of two of the world's biggest bands—namely AC/DC and INXS. Originating from the fast Melbourne music scene at only 19 years of age, Michael carved a pathway and stepping stone for others to emulate. From his beginnings as a nightclub owner to a talent booking agent to band management, record label creator/owner, to the author, Michael has seen and experienced a life many would envy. These days he consults and still passes on life and business lessons to new and emerging projects and acts. But it’s this podcast that we compare and contrast the two careers of AC/DC and INXS through the lens of Michael Browning, who was the lifeline and managerial presence. It was he who gave these famous bands the very chance to rise from their humble beginnings of gigging, writing, and recording to eventually conquer the globe. With fascinating insights, anecdotes, and stories from a time and place, sit back and embrace the Michael Browning story! Thu, 30 Mar 2023 - 1h 13min - 153 - Epi 143: Elegantly Wasted Reviews REVIEWED!
As we wrap up our 5-episode deep dive on Elegantly Wasted, we take the unique step of going back to 1997 and beyond and assess the album reviews. Often critical and commercial success are mutually exclusive; however, we place a lens on which reviews actually review the songs and which are only interested in the theatrics that surrounded Michael during this turbulent period. Bee and I literally read out over 15 reviews, with many favorable in their assessment of the album and some less so. It’s rare to hold reviewers and critics to account, and it was fascinating seeing how peripheral some of these “self-proclaimed” know-it-alls failed in the core task of examining the songs vs the optics. Nineteen ninety-seven was a tragic year for the band with Michael’s passing. But, as Tim Peacock from Undercover Music so eloquently explains in his April 2022 re-review some 25 years later, we now have clean air to appreciate and view the songs for what they were: lyrically potent, musically challenging, and melodically excellent. So, buckle up as we put to rest INXS’ last studio album as an original six-piece, “Elegantly Wasted”—which was “Better than Oasis”! Love and Peace ✌️ Haydn https://www.inxsaccessallareas.com Check out our fan engagement page to buy a Hot Ticket! Good Luck!
Sun, 26 Mar 2023 - 1h 02min - 152 - Epi 142: Elegantly Wasted Recording Engineer Mike Plotnikoff, Part 2
With a massive surge in downloads for our exclusive interview with Elegantly Wasted’s Recording Engineer Mike Plotnikoff, we round off the discussion in part 2 with one of rock music’s finest producers. Mike opens up about Michael Hutchence’s incredible talent in the studio and bears witness to how he was tracking personally and professionally in what sadly was his last 12 months. Feeling Michael’s rock star vibe and charisma, whether in the studio or socially, he compared his aura favorably with other singing icons such as Steve Tyler from Aerosmith. Mike expands the discussion into several famous identities he has recorded with, namely Alice Cooper, Johnny Depp and Carlos Santana, plus provides unique insights into the intangible energy that permeates a great recording experience and its effect on the finished article. Sat, 18 Mar 2023 - 1h 47min - 151 - Epi141: Elegantly Wasted Recording Engineer Mike Plotnikoff, Part 1
The guests keep coming, with Bee and me proud to welcome legendary recording engineer Mike Plotnikoff to the INXS Access all Areas Podcast. Having paired up in his formative years with famed producer Bruce Fairbairn, he was half of the Canadian duo responsible for some of the biggest-selling records of the 1990s by acts including AC/DC, Aerosmith, and the Cranberries. Come 1997, both Andrew Farriss and Michael Hutchence reached out to Bruce and Mike, having put together a wealth of strong material and demos via an extended songwriting session in London where Michael had the best and most honest lyrics of his career. In the first of our two-part series, Mike opens up on the recording process of Elegantly Wasted with huge respect for the professionalism, talent levels, and preparation of Andrew and Michael. Feeling Michael’s rock-star aura and swagger, Mike shares great insights into how great INXS were to work with whilst providing never before seen photos of Michael and the band, both in the studio as well as Spain where recording duties extended. This and a whole lot more! So, sit back and remember an important time and place where Michael’s last musical contribution started and lives on today. Sat, 11 Mar 2023 - 1h 30min - 150 - Epi 140: Elegantly Wasted Side 2
It’s with great pleasure that we get to deep dive and reviews side 2 of 1997’s Elegantly Wasted by INXS, starting with ‘Girl on Fire‘ at song 7. We take the unique step of also reviewing bonus songs ‘Shine‘ and ‘Let It Ride,‘ both of which were only on international releases (not American). As always, Bee and I get to add some “deep cut” tracks that weren’t singles to our ever-growing Spotify playlist of lesser-known INXS songs that simply showcase the depth of this classy band's songwriting catalogue. Combined with some great fan engagement, the most up-to-date news, and interesting album anecdotes, this is a not-to-be-missed INXS: Access All Areas episode. Sat, 25 Feb 2023 - 1h 08min - 149 - Epi 139: Elegantly Wasted: Side 1
After much patience and time, we finally get to dive deep with our album review and a broader discussion on INXS’ 1997 Elegantly Wasted, recorded in Vancouver/Dublin by the late Bruce Fairbairn. Having enjoyed the longest recording hiatus of their career since 1993’s underrated Full Moon Dirty Hearts, the band returned with a vibrant, more accessible, and lyrically heartfelt album that has grown in appreciation with time. With 11, 12, and 13 tracks released in different formats for different regions, Michael and Andrew seem refreshed and reignited in their endeavors with songs that explore a range of musical sonics and styles but still remain quintessentially INXS. No mean feat that!!! Bee and I go through Side One with both a 1997 and 2023 lens to see if it still stacks up musically. For now, sit back and enjoy what was Michael’s final musical contribution to the INXS legacy. Enjoy. Love and peace ✌️ Haydn https://www.inxsaccessallareas.com
Wed, 22 Feb 2023 - 1h 16min - 147 - Epi 138: Garry Gary Beers Part 3
As we wrap up our trilogy of chats with Garry Gary Beers, we are pleased to delve into the latter recording career, particularly the album Switch and we ask more about his book—plus INXS’ prospects of making the Rock Hall of Fame despite missing out on the 2023 induction ballot. I can smell a rant coming!!!!! Furthermore, we have adjusted our podcast format to ensure a better flow of content, and trust you will like the changes. With an exciting news update, we also foreshadow the next album review for episode 139, so pay attention until the end. It’s with great pleasure that INXS Access All Areas welcomes to the podcast founding bass player and inimitable groove merchant Garry Gary Beers. Based in Los Angeles for over a decade, Garry formed a tour-de-force sound, particularly with Jon Farriss. Part One dives deep into the early days when he met other future band partners, his many musical influences and non-INXS activities, such as setting up the legendary Mangrove Studios for other burgeoning artists like Silverchair to come and record at. Still deeply passionate about his craft, Garry shares some fascinating insights into his new bass guitar design, construction, and marketing of this unique guitar business. Forever frank, open, and giving, we hope you enjoy this rare episode where we pick the brains of a key cog in the INXS machine. Fri, 27 Jan 2023 - 1h 16min - 144 - Epi 135: Michael Hutchence vs Chris Murphy
As we commemorate the two-year anniversary of INXS Manager Chris Murphy’s passing we simultaneously pay homage to what would have been Michael Hutchence’s 63rd birthday with a deep dive into their professional but often volatile relationship. In 1995 Chris severed ties after 15 years of committed and trailblazing stewardship of INXS precipitated by what seemed an untenable relationship with Michael. Both the alpha male type bulls in a paddock, their collective ambitions pushed INXS to the top of world music however creatively they often clashed particularly after INXS’ game-changing performance of the KICK album. So today we examine the relationship of two dearly departed icons that date wise, cross-over this January 2023. Wed, 28 Dec 2022 - 1h 37min - 141 - Epi 132: Michael Hutchence’s Recording Friends
As we embark on 1995 in our INXS career anthology, Michael Hutchence started to stretch himself musically, teaming up with icon Gang of Four co-founder Andy Gill and Tim Simeon to assist in writing and recording his first pure solo album—an album we shall do a deep dive on in future episodes. However, it served to highlight how respected and liked Michael was within the music industry despite the negative comments by a certain Mancunian songwriter (who shall remain nameless) around this time. With artists such as Joe Strummer, Bernard Fowler, and famed drummer Kenny Aronoff lending their efforts to the recordings, it inspired me to look back and delve into the many famous artists that were inspired to work with both Michael and INXS: in the studio, on stage, and on film. Sat, 17 Dec 2022 - 1h 00min - 140 - Epi 131: Part 1: INXS Compilation Albums 1982-1994
It’s often said that greatest hits albums are a culmination of a band’s body of work during the key parts of its career, and with INXS we have contrasting motives behind these releases being discussed today. 1982’s INXSIVE: The Deluxe Years was a helpful entrée for new fans wanting a consolidated understanding of the band’s sophomore work, albeit a cash grab from its old label. 1994’s The Greatest Hits, a more reflective package that covered INXS’ start, their climb, and the starring ascent to worldwide domination with different track listings released in different markets, namely Australia, USA, Japan, Brazil, and the UK. With bonus tracks on all of these releases, many ardent fans across the globe welcomed these releases into their music collections, whilst passing fans into the band’s singles found these packages a shortcut to sonic joy. So, as we approach the closing of 2022, join us at INXS Access All Areas as we retrospectively enjoy this first installment that is “The Compilations”! e taken to this event through our heartfelt recounting of this wonderful experience. In the week the world remembers Michael Hutchence 25 years after that infamous afternoon, November 22, 1997, Bee and myself join the remembrance. With the dominant Don’t Change playing the exact venue INXS we were supposed to play 25 years ago in Wollongong, many loyal patrons made it to this fantastic gig. Blair & co. played a relentless 25-song set, barely taking a breath, with plenty of interesting song choices. We share this evening with some great interviews and footage from the Saturday night gig in question. Then, from Sunday, we share with our listeners the wonderful experience whereby 60 loyal and nostalgic fans attended the Lamrock Cafe in Bondi where Greg Perano (Michael’s best friend) and Richard Simpkin (Michael: Life in Pictures book) hosted a heartfelt 25th-anniversary tribute on the shores of Bondi Beach. With fans from all points of the globe, stories, photos, anecdotes, and tunes were shared amongst all with great affection and affinity for a man that still influences our lives. Mon, 05 Dec 2022 - 1h 20min - 138 - Epi 129: Make Time Stop: Michael Hutchence 25 Years ago Today
Michael Kelland Hutchence was born on January 22nd, 1960, and passed way too soon on November 22nd, 1997 soared through his 37 years like a comet brimming with energy, radiance, and vitality touching the hearts, minds, and souls of millions. Often compared to Jim Morrison and Mick Jagger, Michael carved a unique pathway with his baritone range, sinewy dance moves, and charismatic stare that made those who copped his glare feel like the only person in the room. Women loved him, men wanted to be him and fans simply wanted to dance to his versatile, vocal delivery that was admired by contemporaries Bono, Michael Stipe, Simon Le Bon, Billy Corgan, and Bruce Springsteen through to those influenced by him namely, The Killers, Arcade Fire, 1975, Eskimo Joe and Matchbox Twenty. So today we commemorate, celebrate and reiterate the greatness, kindness, and uniqueness that was Michael Hutchence. Forever rest in peace. https://www.inxsaccessallareas.com

Proud as ever to have touring crews that were the envy of all international acts, Jon humbly showcases that he saw his role in the band as more than just a drummer. We also drag out of the archives after a great rest Pleasure and Pain, with Bee having their first crack regarding the year that was 1996! The year that saw the Olympics hit Atlanta, Tickle Me Elmo toys go ballistic and the Internet soar to new record levels! Wed, 21 Sep 2022 - 54min - 128 - Ep 119: ’Heaven Sent’ The Maxi Single Review
As we acknowledge the passing of Queen Elizabeth II, it’s somewhat appropriate that we dive deep on what many consider the greatest CD Maxi Single in INXS’ catalogue: “Heaven Sent”. With the early 1990’s signifying a real musical shift, INXS spearheaded their seminal Welcome to Wherever You Are with this four-to-the-floor rock stomper that surprisingly started off as a country-tinged ballad. Including the bonus tracks “It Ain’t Easy”, “11th Revolution”, “Deepest Red” and the gliding version of “Heaven Sent”, INXS Access All Areas explores this exciting period in 1992 when bands took great risks with their releases. So, as we enjoy getting all musical again, sit back and enjoy what kicked off an exciting new period of experimentation for the great INXS. Little did anyone know that on the same day, six Aussie lads from the Northern Beaches of Sydney would debut as a band. Fast-forward 20 years later and these ambitious lads—Michael, Andrew, Kirk, Jon, Gary, and Tim—would create a music catalogue the envy of their peers, seducing millions of feet onto dance floors and hitting the hearts of music fans across the far reaches of the globe. Mon, 25 Jul 2022 - 00min - 121 - Epi 114: Scandinavian Love for INXS
Truly an international band, INXS never rested on their laurels, and this was evidenced by their success in Europe's post-Kick album. With the X album and Welcome to Wherever You Are making great inroads into the Scandinavian charts, the band toured did a promo, and supported the region that laid claim to great musical pioneers like ABBA. Melodies and rhythms transcend lyrical and language barriers and the stern hooks, melodious sounds, and sonics of INXS struck a chord then and now with the fans of Scandinavia. So, INXS: Access All Areas once again takes you back in time and place where the band left such an indelible footprint on the musical landscape of Scandinavia. Be prepared for some ABBA tie-ins, and enjoy! Fresh off our Part One deep dive with Richard Lowenstein, we are excited to prove that the sequel sometimes can be better than the original. Somehow, we manage to recapture 1987 in all its glory, with further discussions about the Prague videos of “Never Tear Us Apart” and “Guns in the Sky”. We explore his 2019 masterpiece “Mystify” documentary on Michael Hutchence and get a sense of the man as Richard reveals new anecdotes and stories of their time together. Additionally, Richard shares with us the sheer difficulty of putting the project together with band management regularly blocking needed music to augment the strict telling of the story. With our much-loved patrons getting their questions answered, we are excited to close off this much-wanted discussion with a true “auteur” to the arts that is the great Richard Lowenstein. Sat, 09 Jul 2022 - 1h 22min - 118 - Epi 111: Haydn’s INXS Mix Tape
There is never a dull moment in the INXS world, and this week I was fortunate enough to take in the fantastic cover band in Victoria, Australia, “INXSIVE”! With blistering live performance, it reminded me of those nostalgic days when in the car with Mum and my sister on the 120 miles drive to Kyabram for Xmas. As such, the good old mix tape offset the crackly fade of early 80's AM and the non-existent FM regional frequency. So, today I dive deep and retrospectively apply unique and meaningful INXS songs to an era in time that is sorely missed and remembered with nostalgic fondness. We also get to hear Bee’s 1995 Pleasure and Pain tracks, with an emphasis on the pleasure (of course). With some fantastic interviews lined up over the next month, INXS: Access All Areas indulges in what INXS means to its co-hosts, and we hope you, too, can submit for mention your own INXS mix tape with a personal theme attached. We shall share them!! Sun, 03 Jul 2022 - 1h 14min - 117 - Episode 110: Bee’s INXS Mix Tape
Before Spotify, iTunes, Amazon, iPods, and playlists, we music fans of the 1980s were sheer lovers of the “mix tape” format: often a romantic ode and gift to a high-school love, a compilation of radio tracks taped whilst studying or a most timely road-trip option when the old AM/FM frequency started to crackle as the family wagon hit the countryside. So, today we dive deep into Bee’s favorite INXS songs, all themed for a much-needed escape away with the girls. We get to enjoy an assortment of INXS tracks—strictly 12 tracks with 6 on side 1 and 6 on side 2—that make that long drive from Coffs Harbour to her favorite entertainment destination a pure listening experience. To balance the proceedings, we allow Haydn to dive deep into Pleasure & Pain with 10 awesome songs from 1995 when alternative music became the mainstream in quality and content. All that and a whole lot more! So, kick back, forget about the problems in your life and embrace Episode 110 of INXS: Access All Areas. Sat, 28 May 2022 - 07min - 112 - Epi 106: Back in Time Series: INXS, Rocking the Royals in 1985
INXS: Access All Areas has largely taken a chronological deep dive over the last two years. However, today we are taking a “Marty McFly” trip back in the “DeLorean” and breaking from convention. As such, we travel back to November 4th, 1985, when INXS led a swathe of Australian talent by headlining the Charles & Diana concert: “Rocking the Royals”. Situated in Melbourne, Victoria, whereby the state was celebrating its 150th anniversary, The Arts Centre gig became the most hotly-contested ticket in town as 3000 lucky fans got inside the venue and 40,000 fans danced and celebrated outside with the help of some big screens. Freshly off the release of Listen Like Thieves, INXS powered through a blistering list of songs that had Charles clicking his fingers and Diana off her chair swaying to the dulcet tones of Michael’s evocative lyrics and moves. It’s been said that the 1991 Wembley gig was the zenith of INXS’ star. However, gigs such as the Royals gig paved the momentum and ascent necessary to climb into the international consciousness of fans, both local and afar. So, sit back, immerse yourself in 1985, and reminisce as we take a lovingly forensic look at what was “Rocking the Royals” with INXS!! Sun, 22 May 2022 - 1h 04min - 111 - Epi 105: INXS’s Full Moon Dirty Hearts, Side 2 (with Mark Opitz)
As Bee and I come to the conclusion of our five-week examination of Full Moon, Dirty Hearts, we deep dive into Side 2 tracks, namely: 7. Full Moon Dirty Hearts 8. Freedom Deep 9. Kill the Pain 10. Cut Your Roses Down 11. The Messenger & 12. Viking Juice With further analysis by famed producer Mark Opitz, we get further insights into the melodies, songwriting, and recording techniques with precise detail. Additionally, Bee and I get to add some interesting non-singles album tracks to our ever-growing Spotify playlist. Hint Hint: there may be a record swag of songs added! Mark is very passionate about the sequencing and tracklisting of Full Moon, Dirty Hearts and opined that if his original list was preserved, the album may have faired differently. Anyway, buckle up and enjoy our closing chapter of Full Moon, Dirty Hearts and do yourself a favour and listen to this long-forgotten gem. Sat, 14 May 2022 - 1h 18min - 110 - Ep 104: INXS’s album Full Moon Dirty Hearts, Side 1 Deep-dive with special guest Mark Optiz
Hey, “don’t bore us get to the chorus”, I hear you say. Well, after Mark Opitz's fantastic insights into the whole Capri setup and backdrop on the recording of Full Moon, Dirty Hearts, it’s time for the songs. As such, we take a forensic deep dive “CSI Capri style” into tracks 1-6 on side one of the album, namely: Days of Rust The Gift Make your Peace Time I’m only Looking & Please (You Got That...) Expanding on the production, band performance, and musicality of each track, we unearth some fascinating and never-heard insights and anecdotes. With the album front-loaded in terms of rock tracks, no doubt it’s a bone of contention with Producer Mark who, despite great affection for all of the album’s songs, was frustrated with the interference from “outside influences”. So, if you haven’t examined or are vague about the tracks on this album, do yourself a favour and tune into what is a fascinating examination and review of an overlooked musical achievement. Sun, 01 May 2022 - 1h 24min - 109 - Epi 103: The Making of INXS’s Full Moon Dirty Hearts Album
Episode 103: The Making of FMDH, Part One In the first of our two-part deep dive with famed international producer Mark Opitz, we tackle the actual making of Full Moon, Dirty Hearts on the Italian island oasis (whoops!) of Capri and aim to put you right in the time period. Mark Opitz defines in episode 103 of INXS: Access All Areas that the role of the producer is akin to the director of the movie: guiding the engineers to follow his time-honored practices in getting the sounds and sonics of the vocals, guitars, drums, and keyboards in sync; ensuring the mixes are done to satisfaction, and pushing the band to be the best they can be with their songwriting and studio performance. Despite the commercial failure of Full Moon, Dirty Hearts, particularly in America (no thanks to the record label), the band and Mark came up with 12 tracks that 29 years later still hold up musically. We drill down on the Capri experience to examine “where” each member of the band was at, personally and professionally, after Welcome to Wherever You Are and a recent retreat to Michael’s South France villa. Why was Capri chosen? What actually happened there? (Warts and all!) And what did the imminent ending of INXS’ long-term arrangement with its label mean for the marketing and distribution for Full Moon, Dirty Hearts? Mark has never been more erudite and revealing as we take you on a “Back to the Future, fly on the wall” experience of the entire Capri affair: the island, the hotel, the history, the recording studio, the ad hoc phone calls to Bono from Michael, the sudden arrival of Chris Murphy who sought to renegotiate his management deal, and Michael’s post-accident period where he was adjusting to life without the vital senses of taste and smell. Sometimes great music can come out of great calamity and band dysfunction (hello, Fleetwood Mac 1977 Rumours), and we are lucky to have this often forgotten and neglected album to listen to and re-appreciate some 29 years later. So, before we examine each track and discuss the songs, sit back and immerse yourself in a time and place where the band was enjoying a creative peak, if not a commercial one, and embrace the making of Full Moon, Dirty Hearts. Sat, 23 Apr 2022 - 1h 25min - 108 - Epi 102: INXS’s Full Moon, Dirty Hearts: Album Review
----more---- Full Moon, Dirty Hearts (November 1993) was the fastest album release (only 15 months since Welcome…) since the band’s second album Underneath the Colours in 1981. Too much product too soon was the record label’s thoughts, and as such, this poorly-promoted release suffered commercially after 1992’s critically-acclaimed Welcome to Wherever You Are. That aside, Full Moon, Dirty Hearts was a versatile, hook-laden album with more right- and left-turn sounds and sonics than a “Rome City Roundabout”! Funk, soul, grunge, R&B, the blues, and world music sounds are all explored musically under the right stewardship of famed musical producer Mark Opitz on the Isle of Capri, Italy. With guest appearances by Rock & Roll Hall of Famers Ray Charles and Chrissie Hynde, many of the songs were stylistically different from one another. This also opened up the band to be the first that recorded an entire album visually with several young Aussie directors each given a track to make a video. No doubt the lead single “The Gift” (co-written by Jon and Michael) became the spearhead track that was most successful chart-wise and video award-wise (thank you Richard Lowenstein) and set the tone for another change in INXS’ musical direction. So, today Bee and I dive deep into an ignored gem in the INXS arsenal of albums and scrutinize how it stands up 29 years later. Sun, 17 Apr 2022 - 1h 47min - 107 - Epi 101: Darren Jones’s INXS Stories Part 2
From the outset, big thanks to all of the well-wishers who made episode 100 such a beautiful experience for Bee, the team, and me. Today, we are fortunate to delve deeper with the inimitable Darren Jones, whose access, anecdotes, and involvement with INXS have few peers. We get to hear about Garry Gary Beers’ fantastic Mangrove Studios which was state-of-the-art for its time and gave back to the Australian musicians such as Silverchair, Courtney Barnett, and Sarah Blasko. Darren also shares a rare moment in Adelaide when Andrew Farriss allegedly “lost the plot” with rare anger on display. Sun, 10 Apr 2022 - 1h 24min - 106 - Epi 100: INXS with Part 1 the Darren Jones Interview
Bee and I proudly celebrate episode 100 of INXS: Access All Areas with an episode jam-packed with familiar voices expressing their heartfelt thanks and thoughts amidst a cavalcade of anecdotes. We especially deep dive with one of INXS’ true heroes, Darren Jones, who was a true pioneer in the website space in the late 1990s, collating and distributing news and content at a global level. Destined to be a future honorary patron, Darren has generously donated rare content such as the Dekadance material for our competitions. He also opens up in detail but with total respect about his dealings and friendships with each band member, particularly during the period after Michael’s passing, when the band’s direction was cloudy. With marvelous production and archival audio by my Co-host Bee, this episode’s two weeks of planning and recording promises to be a “do not miss a moment” as we pay tribute with a modern-day perspective to what is great and fantastic about INXS. Sat, 02 Apr 2022 - 1h 06min - 105 - Epi 99: O Canada INXS Love
Episode 99: O Canada INXS Love Much like Australia, Canada is a country of true beauty and vast landscapes. Similar to INXS’ homeland, Canada was and still is a marketplace where rabid support and loyalty to the INXS catalogue remains to this day. In episode 99, INXS: Access All Areas pays tribute to both band and Canadian fans for their mutual love for one another as myself and Bee, dive deep into all successes and experiences that created such joint love. Singles chart success, touring, recording and interviews are all discussed and acknowledged with thoroughness and thought. Canada may have been a slightly slower burn initially for INXS, but it’s the country where the band has had their highest amount of number one singles even exceeding their homeland. Additionally, from Vancouver to Quebec and everything in between, INXS constantly toured and supported the rabid fans' thirst for live concert touring with loyalty and gusto. So, as we prepare for Episode 100 next week, narrow your focus to this special episode that’s also dedicated to our Podcast patrons from Canada, namely Vern, Jamie, Geneviève, Heidi, Sandrine, Maïté, and Leon. ✌️ Love and peace, Haydn VINTAGE MERCH FLASH-SALE from 20the Match to 3rd April ONLY Don't miss out follow this link https://www.inxsaccessallareas.com/vintage-merch To become a Patron/ subscriber check out our different levels and see which one suits you. https://patron.podbean.com/INXSAccessAllAreas Please sign the petition at http://inductinxs.comto help get INXS nominated into the ROCK & ROLL HALL of FAME, where they belong.
Sun, 20 Mar 2022 - 1h 05min - 104 - Epi 98: R.I.P. Shane Warne, from your mates INXS,with Special Guest Tim Farriss
It’s with a heavy heart that the world mourns the loss of Australia’s answer to Michael Jordan or Babe Ruth. Cricketer Shane Keith Warne (passed away on Friday, March 4th from a sudden heart attack at the age of only 52 in Thailand where he was holidaying at the time). With 708 wickets in the difficult art of leg-spin bowling, Shane managed to make the long-forgotten art of leg-spin bowling sexy again... so much so that Elton John and Mick Jagger wanted to be him and Ed Sheeran, Roger Federer, Tiger Woods and Coldplay’s Chris Martin adored his skill and friendship. Bold, brash, and proudly bogan (Google it), Shane lived a colorful life on and off the field, where he regularly mixed with the “big end of town and celebrities”. His love and respect for INXS and Michael Hutchence was well known and they mixed regularly when both the band and team were touring in the same city. So, for the portion of Access All Areas of fans unfamiliar with him (particularly North America), we pay tribute in song with INXS tracks that serve as a soundtrack to his life and the perennial love we have for him in our hearts! This episode also features an interview with Tim Farriss, paying his tribute to Shane. R.I.P Shane. The world shall miss you. Not Enough Time. Sat, 12 Mar 2022 - 1h 27min - 103 - Epi 97: INXS Song Deep Dive: Never Tear Us Apart
With the final INXS track in Song Week upon us, we culminate with Never Tear Us Apart, a track that has grown from a beautiful ballad to truly iconic status. Ensuring a fourth consecutive top 10 from album KICK, Never Tear Us Apart is an alternative sounding Fats Domino-inspired waltz transformed into a beautiful, lush orchestral masterpiece. Soaring the charts globally, this ballad never wastes a note, lyric, or moment, and still, 35 years later produces spine tingles and heart flutters. Whether it’s Michael’s evocative lyrics and vocals or the sublime instrumentation by the band, this song truly comes to life in the city of Prague with Richard Lowenstein’s award-winning video. Covered by numerous artists since its release including Joe Cocker, Tom Jones, Natalie Imbruglia, and The Teskey Brothers, N.T.U.A. has transcended its origins with it now being the match day theme song for Port Adelaide Football Club, Michael’s funeral song, and the titular name of the band’s award-winning miniseries in 2014. So sit back, grab a Kleenex and open your heart to this beautiful song. Wed, 02 Mar 2022 - 27min - 101 - Epi 95: INXS Song Deep Dive: What You Need
Well, folks, we are up and running in “Song Week” as we deep dive into the third groundbreaking and pivotal song that proved to be a shapeshifter for INXS. Today it’s 1985’s “What you Need” from the album Listen like Thieves. A song that nearly never came to fruition if not for both Chris Thomas’ insistent ask for “one more song” with the hit-making scope and the band’s preparedness to polish up an old demo. With little time, Michael and Andrew came up with the lyrics, the band rehearsed and recorded, then it was added to the final pressed disc/album—all in 48 hours! Talk about pressure! Hitting number 2 in Australia on its debut week, What You Need was surprisingly released as the second single in the USA, where it climbed to number 5 on the Billboard Charts. Accompanied by arguably their best film clip by Richard Lowenstein, it was a fitting reward after nearly 10 years as a band, thus opening the floodgates for the album Kick that followed some 18 months later. So kick back, put the headphones on and enjoy What You Need! Tue, 01 Mar 2022 - 33min - 100 - Epi 94: INXS Song Deep Dive: The One Thing
Episode 94: INXS Song Deep Dive: The One Thing Second up in our celebration of INXS song week is 1982’s The One Thing, a track that might be argued was the most significant musical leap and audience reaching of their careers. With shrewd management by Chris Murphy, INXS had Mark Opitz now at the helm who had the ability to bring out that “big INXS sound” for the first time. With their first top 15 hits in Australia roaring through the airwaves, it set up Shabooh Shoobah for 12 months of Top 40 occupation and 3 subsequent strong singles. But most importantly, it crossed over into the fickle MTV and Billboard landscape by becoming a Top 30 hit Stateside. The rest, they say, is history so sit back and reminisce the greatness of The One Thing that 40 years later, still sounds fresh and vital. Mon, 28 Feb 2022 - 30min - 99 - Epi 93: INXS Song Deep Dive: Burn For You
Bee and I are about to undertake our most ambitious recording workload with 5 episodes in 5 days!!! Why? Well, it’s time to go back and celebrate 5 “turning point and pivotal songs” in the INXS catalogue that remain fan staples and permeate the sound waves globally on a daily basis. First up, we discuss the legendary Australian charts number 3 hit “Burn for You” in all its glory, with sounds and structures reminiscent of two other tracks of its era. Added to the Live Baby Live album in 1991, “Burn for You” gained prominence, particularly in the USA when INXS conquered the land of Uncle Sam. The first of five episodes include the usual segments such as INXS/musical news, gig updates, and fan engagement. However, episodes 2-5 on the Song deep dives shall be perfect lunch break fodder and only be 30 minutes; it’s all “chorus and no bore us”!!!!! So, INXS fans, this week it’s all about the songs that brought invaluable joy and ear-candy pleasure, representing a more innocent and nostalgic time in our lives when things were easy. Sat, 26 Feb 2022 - 58min - 98 - Epi 92: Richard Clapton Part 2, INXS Back-Stories
We return to Part 2 interview with Richard Clapton that takes things up a notch. Australia’s preeminent singer-songwriter continues to share fascinating tales of his days with INXS that include a life-changing night when he slept in the bed normally occupied by Michael and Kylie, the re-recording of INXS’ The Loved One in Paris, and his long-standing relationship with Chris Murphy. Forever erudite and giving, Richard continues to talk with grace, humor, and fondness for the halcyon days before devices and ‘gotcha’ culture moments pervade everything an artist does these days. Hey, Bee gets poetic (lookout, Banjo Patterson!), we have another moment with Murphy and a very rare special voiceover from a dearly departed icon. So, join the musical revolution of Access All Areas: INXS that kicks “The Voice’s” ass in every way, and tell your friends about it!! Sat, 19 Feb 2022 - 1h 11min - 97 - Epi 91: BREAKING NEWS: “Rock n Roll Hall of Fame snub leads to fan revolt”!
BREAKING NEWS: “Rock n Roll Hall of Fame snub leads to fan revolt”! In an episode not to be missed, INXS: Access all Areas brings to you this “special edition, not to be missed” episode attacking the criminal omission of INXS off the latest 17 artist ballot that was released last weekend. With such “non-rock n roll” artists like Dionne Warwick, Dolly Parton and Lionel Richie making the ballot, this concept of recognizing this institution is sadly becoming a modern-day exercise in woke, identity politics, and rock n roll irrelevance. So, are we wrong? Are we too harsh? Are we on the money? Well, we assemble a panel of music fans and some patrons of our group namely: Dr. Jim: Melbourne Genevieve: Amsterdam Manny: Yorkshire Craig: Newcastle Laurie: Chicago to debate the list of nominees that include: Duran Duran Rage Against the Machine Judas Priest Devo Eminem Beck Pat Benatar Carly Simon Eurythmics & Kate Bush Dionne Warwick Do we get a consensus? Wildly disagree? Argue yay or nay? Well, you’ll need to check in to what might just be our most volatile, contentious, and fiery podcast since we commenced in May 2021. Warning: Not for the faint-hearted.
