Fri, 16 Feb 2024 - 41min - 23 - Menopause Workplace Support
This week on the Menopause Uprising Podcast we have Minister Roderic O'Gorman.
Minister Roderic O’Gorman has told leading menopause consultant Catherine O’Keeffe that the government has commissioned research to look at how best to support people in the workplace with menopausal symptoms.
The Minister for Children, Equality, Disability, Integration and Youth of Ireland was a guest on ‘The Menopause Uprising', which is hosted by Catherine O’Keeffe, otherwise known as the Wellness Warrior. Minister O’Gorman outlined that the research is part of the government’s Women’s Health Action plan, which also deals with issues such as supporting people going through IVF, and establishing legislation surrounding surrogacy.
Minister O’Gorman’s conversation came about as a recent Wellness Warrior ‘Menopause and Your Work’ survey showed almost four fifths of people still believe menopause is a taboo in the workplace, while half would like an in-house support group with colleagues. The top symptoms listed by people having difficulty in work because of menopause were brain fog, anxiety, loss of confidence and insomnia.
Speaking on the ‘Menopause Uprising’ podcast, Minister O’Gorman explained the nature of the research currently underway: "Some of the issues that have come up in the course of our research are the need for basics in the workplace for people with menopausal symptoms, such as temperature control in an office, or having suitable material in a uniform. Other issues relate to the culture in a workplace - ensuring people are comfortable in going to their line manager to discuss their symptoms and needs.”
He told Catherine that progress has been made in the area of supporting menopausal women in the workplace, but more needs to be done: "A lot of companies in both the public and private sector are already taking steps towards supporting people going through menopause in the workplace. For now, it’s about guidance, support, better information and setting out best practices in workplaces. I think we can achieve a lot for a large proportion of workers and employees through that.”

Fri, 13 Oct 2023 - 57min - 16 - Menopause in the Workplace with ESB
Welcome back to another episode of 'Menopause Uprising' with me, Catherine O'Keeffe. Menopause in the workplace. It is, pardon the pun, a really hot topic in Ireland at the moment. It actually is the world over. Ireland is certainly leading the conversation, which is brilliant. And I have been really privileged to work with one of the forerunners in Ireland, which has been the ESB. Today, I'm joined by Laura Duff and Brian Samson from the ESB.
Brian talks about how his own understanding of menopause has grown immensely over the last 18 months due to the Menopause Program. The symptoms are wide-ranging and can profoundly affect women's daily lives, especially when combined with workplace pressures.
A crucial aspect of the Menopause Program at ESB is normalizing the conversation in the workplace and helping both women and men better understand this phase of life.
This episode underscores our ongoing commitment to shedding light on menopause in the workplace. I hope you enjoy!

Wed, 30 Mar 2022 - 42min - 8 - Hot Flushes at the age of 12, Premature Ovarian Insufficiency two brave women share their menopause story
When I stared studying and researching menopause years ago I was struck by the many forms of early menopause and by Premature Ovarian Insufficiency (POI) in particular. At the time I struggled to find any information in Ireland and luckily I came upon the Daisy Network - a UK based charity. I reached out to them and soon became the Irish representative for this crucial support service. Since that day I know the awareness and discussion in relation to menopause has expanded and now we need to make sure we keep going and go deeper into the many layers of menopause.
POI is one form of menopause that comes with so much complexity and challenges. I was thrilled to have two fabulous women from our POI Friends Support Group join my podcast and share their stories.
This wasn’t easy.
Neither Jenny nor Ruth’s journey has been easy.
Jenny was in 6th class in primary school when her hot flushes started.
I am in awe of both of them and the journey they have taken and so appreciative of their bravery in sharing their stories - I know it wasn’t easy, there were lumps in all our throats at different stages of this recording.
Thank you Jenny & Ruth for sharing your stories so vulnerably I know it will help so many others.
Natural Menopause is a privilege - the earlier forms of menopause come with many additional challenges - physically, emotionally and mentally.
