- 393 - Nottingham Forest 2-3 Chelsea: The 1865 Premier League Match Report
On a day when Forest were confirmed as "all but safe", the Reds failed to rubber stamp their Premier League status as they conceded two late goals to money bags Chelsea. In truth, Forest didn't look like a worse team than their wealthy counterparts, until the subs were made, which strengthened the visitors and weakened the hosts. Steven Toplis is joined by Baz to discuss a topsy-turvy game which the Reds probably should have won, and also whether we can really feel secure as the spectre of Stoke City continues to haunt Forest fans. We'll be back at the end of the week with our Friday Five roundup, before travelling to Burnley to hopefully put the seal on Premier League survival. Fri, 10 May 2024 - 391 - Sheffield United 1-3 Nottingham Forest: The 1865 Premier League Match Report
A much-needed three points, as despite scoring first through ex-Red Ben Brereton Diaz, the Blades proved how bad they are at defending, allowing Callum Hudson-Odoi to score two of his trademark goals, sandwiching skipper Ryan Yates' first Premier League goal. The Maradona of the Midlands is joined by George Edwards, as our match reporters recover from their dip in the Trent to review a potentially very important result, on the weekend that Luton and Burnley failed to win. We'll be back later in the week with our Friday 5 roundup and your Chelsea match report. Fri, 03 May 2024 - 389 - Nottingham Forest 0-2 Manchester City: The 1865 Premier League Match Report
A creditable performance, but Forest missed their chances and the champions took theirs. Goals by Gvardiol and Haaland saw the points go to Manchester, but the general consensus was that the Reds did ok. The real question is whether thay can produce the goods in the last three games of the season? Presented by Steven Toplis with Baz, and the view from the opposition comes from Mike Passaris. We'll be back with more on the Forest appeal in our Friday 5 show later this week, before our report from Bramall Lane as the Reds battle against newly-relegated Sheffield United. Tue, 30 Apr 2024 - 388 - The 1865 Friday Five: Nottingham Forest news, 26th April 2024
As predicted, it has been one heck of a week for Forest fans, with the defeat at Goodison followed by THAT tweet, and the ensuing fallout. Jamie Martin brings us the latest: Post-match tweet Forest request VAR audio Legal action against Gary Neville? Clattenburg contract extension? Stuart Attwell: Luton fan Rich Ferraro is joined by the Maradona of the Midlands to discuss a turbulent, tumultuous, tempestuous and traumatic few days for Forest fans, with a cameo by Tom following Forest's revised and more conciliatory statements during the week. We'll be back with a report after the Manchester City game over the weekend; let's hope that the champions have got all the goals out of their system following their game against Brighton last night. Fri, 26 Apr 2024 - 387 - Everton 2-0 Nottingham Forest: The 1865 Premier League Match Report
The key fact is that Forest lost a relegation six-pointer, to two long range goals. The underlying facts are that there were three clear penalty shouts waved away, including (at least) one where the ref clearly got it wrong but VAR chose not to correct him. The headlines go to the club's tweet on the full-time whistle, which accuses PGMOL of bias and suggests that the club will explore their options, whatever that means. Rich Ferraro is joined by Tom Newton, fresh back from Goodison, to discuss a poor game of football, refereeing decisions, and the post-match comments. Mike from the Unholy Trinity Podcast (our Sports Social stablemates) also offers his opinions on the penalty shouts. We'll discuss the fall out in this week's Friday Five news roundup, later in the week - it's going to be a spicy week before the Man City match next weekend. Fri, 19 Apr 2024 - 385 - Nottingham Forest 2-2 Wolverhampton Wanderers: The 1865 Premier League Match Report
It definitely felt like two points dropped, despite the Reds actually scoring from a corner, and fighting back from conceding a poor goal to take the lead. The old Achilles heel of set pieces hit us again as the defence failed to defend and the keeper could have done more. In the end, it was honours even and no-one was really happy. Steven Toplis presents the match report, along with Tom Newton, and we also hear from Dave of the Talking Wolves channel, after a game that was marred by offensive chanting and abuse towards players (one in particular, and his partner) that was not commented upon in the media. We'll be back with our regular news roundup on Friday, and at Everton next weekend. Fri, 12 Apr 2024 - 383 - Tottenham Hotspur 3-1 Nottingham Forest: The 1865 Premier League Match Report
In reality, the best team won, although it was a match that seemed to hang on a series of incidents: Murillo's own goal, Chris Wood's miss, Maddison's punch and Spurs' half-time subs. After a slow start, Forest actually played quite well for much of the first half, but the natural order was restored in the second period. Rich Ferraro and George Edwards report on the game, with contributions from Tom Newton and JP from The Cheese Room Podcast. We'll be back on Friday with our weekly news roundup, featuring reflections on Everton's additional two-point deduction and remembering Joe Kinnear - in the meantime, thanks for listening. Fri, 05 Apr 2024 - 381 - Nottingham Forest 3-1 Fulham: The 1865 Premier League Match Report
45 minutes of heaven, followed by 45 minutes of hell - however, Forest scored three goals in the first period and withstood the Fulham offensive in the second half, to earn a welcome three points and make up for the points deducted due to the PSR breach. The first half was probably the best we have seen from the Reds, with good goals from Hudson-Odoi, Wood and Gibbs-White, who recreated the Forza Garibaldi banner with his fingers-in-ears celebration. Steven Toplis and George Edwards review the action, and we'll be back on Friday with our latest news roundup. Thu, 04 Apr 2024 - 380 - Nottingham Forest 1-1 Crystal Palace: The 1865 Premier League Match Report
A draw wasn't the result that we wanted, but was enough to pull the Reds out of the relegation zone on goal difference. It could have been so much worse as a tepid first half performance drew the ire of the fans, but the introduction of Gio Reyna on 60 minutes brought instant dividends, as the young American fed Morgan Gibbs-White, who in turn played it into the box where Chris Wood's clever header drew Forest level. On the day that Forest fans got to say goodbye to Larry Lloyd, Rich Ferraro is joined by Baz to talk about tactics, substitutions and the magic of having a proper striker with proper wingers either side. We also discuss South Americans playing on the edge, the need for belief from the players and fans, and whether it is an advantage to revert to a Championship football mentality. Fri, 29 Mar 2024 - 378 - Nottingham Forest receive 4 point PSR deduction: an 1865 Podcast Special
At the end of a tempestuous week for Nottingham Forest Football Club, we take some time to reflect upon the four point deduction imposed by an independent commission and what impact it could have on the Reds' season, and indeed for the wider world of football (especially as Leicester are in trouble and Everton await their next punishment). Should Forest appeal? Has Nick De Marco KC done his job well? Does it matter whether the rules are fair, or does it just matter that Forest broke them? And on the pitch, after failing to beat Luton, do the Reds have enough to beat their rivals to stay in the Premier League, despite their vastly different expenditure? Presented by Rich Ferraro with Baz, George Edwards and Steven Toplis, with assistance from the 1865 Podcat and Producer Romeo. Our next podcast will be the Friday 5 news bulletin at the end of the week, and we will have reports after the crucial home games against Palace and Fulham - thanks for joining us. Fri, 22 Mar 2024 - 376 - Luton Town 1-1 Nottingham Forest: The 1865 Premier League Match Report
It was so near and yet so far for the Reds, as despite having the best chances, they only scored one goal, before the inevitable sucker punch when Luke Berry scored from (you guessed it) a set piece for Luton. Some fans were angry at the inability to take chances and also the substitutions made by Nuno, which left Forest with five at the back and no striker. Steven Toplis is joined by Tom Newton to discuss the game, the fallout and what this means for Forest in a week when the club are awaiting their PSR punishment. We will be back on Friday with the latest updates, and will be recording a special podcast during the international break with thoughts on where the Reds go from here. Fri, 15 Mar 2024 - 374 - Brighton & Hove Albion 1-0 Nottingham Forest: The 1865 Premier League Match Report
Another disappointing result as Forest had chances, but failed to take them. The truth is, for all the grumbling about the referee not sending of Jakub Moder, the Reds could have played all day and not scored. George Edwards is joined by Adam and Tom Newton to discuss the game and the ref, and also Nuno's team selection and substitutions, which raised some eyebrows amongst the Forest supporters. The next match is at Luton, which is the very definition of a six-pointer, especially when we may have heard our PSR punishment. Fri, 08 Mar 2024 - 372 - Men In Black (sigh): The 1865 Forest Ramble, March 2024
It's the return of The Forest Ramble, our discussion podcast in which we cover the Reds' refereeing woes, the possibility of leaving the City Ground, and the issues around fan safety that have recently cropped up. We try and stay polite but the blood pressure was running a bit high on this one, which is already our 50th podcast of the season! In a show recorded just as Felipe was announcing his decision to leave Forest in the summer, Rich Ferraro is joined by Steven Toplis, Baz and George Edwards to discuss all of the above and more, and we also have Jeremy Davies' regular sketch, a game of Guess That Red, and the thoughts of you, the fans, via our Twitter polls. Wed, 06 Mar 2024 - 371 - Nottingham Forest 0-1 Liverpool: The 1865 Premier League Match Report
For the second time in a few days, a promising display by the Reds but a controversial late winner - but the way that this one went in makes Wednesday's goal look just fine. In case you missed it, Forest were attacking the Liverpool area in stoppage time, when the ref stopped play for a head injury (hmmm) and erroneously gave the ball to the away team, stopping the Reds' attack and allowing Liverpool to pile on the pressure, which ended in Darwin Nunez's goal. A very angry Steven Toplis is joined by a "f***ing furious" Baz to discuss the match, and we hear a view from Neil Atkinson of The Anfield Wrap. I hope that the referee Paul Tierney does not have a bakery because there are people in Nottingham and Piraeus who are not happy with him. Sun, 03 Mar 2024 - 370 - Nottingham Forest 0-1 Manchester United & The 1865 Friday Five: 1st March 2024
A disappointing result as the Reds conceded a late goal to a set piece (again) to exit the FA Cup. In truth, Forest more than matched the visitors for much of the match, and even though United probably were the better team, the commitment and performance levels from the home team were good. As well as reporting on the game, Rich Ferraro and The Maradona of the Midlands also discuss the top five news stories from the City Ground, brought to you by Jamie Martin: PSR hearing starts next week AFCON injuries Murillo to Atletico? New goalkeeping coach Defeat to Man Utd, Liverpool match this weekend As you can tell, our reporting deadline meant that we missed the statement from Tom Cartledge, threatening to leave the City Ground - we will discuss that early next week. Fri, 01 Mar 2024 - 369 - Aston Villa 4-2 Nottingham Forest: The 1865 Premier League Match Report
Forest lost away to an Aston Villa team who look exceptional under Unai Emery, but you could argue that the Reds were once again masters of their own downfall with poor defending leaving them 3-0 down before they even got going. Moussa Niakhate and Morgan Gibbs-White scored either side of the break to give hope to the visitors, but Villa took control again and scored a fourth after more poor defending. George Edwards and Ellie Molloson report back from the away end at Villa Park, with thoughts about playing the big Senegalese at left-back and the merits of Divock Origi. We also hear from Neil of For The Love of Paul McGrath podcast, with his thoughts on the game and the Reds' prospects. Fri, 23 Feb 2024 - 367 - Nottingham Forest 2-0 West Ham United: The 1865 Premier League Match Report
Well, that felt good didn't it? A strong performance by the Reds at home to hapless West Ham was capped by a goal in stoppage time at the end of each half by Taiwo Awoniyi and Callum Hudson-Odoi respectively. Forest had much to be pleased about, and will only wish that they had scored the five or six goals that they threatened, with keeper Alphonse Areola the strongest player for the visitors. Baz is joined by Adam to discuss the game, the performance, the goals and yet another penalty not give by the ref or VAR. They have kind words for Nico Dominguez and Neco Williams, and speculate whether this could be a turning point. We'll be back with the Friday 5 followed by the Aston Villa report next week - do join us if you can. Mon, 19 Feb 2024 - 366 - Nottingham Forest 2-3 Newcastle United: The 1865 Premier League Match Report
Annoyingly, frustratingly and disappointingly, Forest's poor home form continues, as despite fighting back twice, poor defending cost them three goals and Newcastle took all three points. The big talking point was the penalty shout when Martin Dubravka clearly made contact with Taiwo Awoniyi in the area, but the ref didn't give anything and VAR chose not to ask him to have a look. George Edwards was joined by Baz to discuss the Reds' porous backline and the performance levels; we also hear from Jack from the Toon Under Podcast with the Geordie view. Fri, 09 Feb 2024 - 364 - Bournemouth 1-1 Nottingham Forest: The 1865 Premier League Match Report
A great goal by Callum Hudson-Odoi was the only real moment of quality in a scrappy game that was epitomised by Phillip Billing's red card for a nasty challenge on the Reds winger. Forest had conceded an early goal in a slow start, and after the late sending off, will feel that they should have got more from the game. Steven Toplis is joined by Adam after a long journey back from the south coast; we also hear from Bournemouth fan Jon Spark from the Cherries Red Army podcast. Sat, 03 Feb 2024 - 362 - Nottingham Forest 1-2 Arsenal: The 1865 Premier League Match Report
A defeat that wasn't that surprising on paper, but was disappointing in practice as mistakes at the back (yes, including another one from Matt Turner) cost the Reds two goals. A glimmer of hope came with the return of Taiwo Awoniyi and Antony Elanga, but the former's late goal proved to be nothing more than a consolation. Baz is joined by Tom Newton for a discussion of the match - key topics include pitchforks, military surveillance equipment and "poppadom wrists". We also get a view from the opposition, from Arsenal fan Chris Harwood, who seems to be more fond of Matt Turner than most Forest fans right now. Thu, 01 Feb 2024 - 361 - Bristol City 0-0 Nottingham Forest: The 1865 FA Cup Match Report
It wasn't exactly the most exciting game, but at least Forest kept their first clean sheet since Nuno Espirito Santo took charge. In reality, there wasn't really much for either keeper to do, with both Danilo and Callum Hudson-Odoi hitting the side netting, and Cameron Pring doing likewise for the hosts. It's back to the City Ground in ten days or so for a replay. Match report presented by Steven Toplis with George Edwards. Fri, 26 Jan 2024 - 359 - Brentford 3-2 Nottingham Forest: The 1865 Premier League Match Report
It was defeat for Forest on Ivan Toney Day, as Ivan Toney's Brentford came back from an early deficit to win the game, with returning hero Ivan Toney unprecedently getting Sky Sports' Player of the Match award before the game even started. In reality, Forest will be kicking themselves about two of the goals conceded, and it would be nice to have a game where we weren't talking about our goalkeeper. Steven Toplis is joined by Tom Newton to discuss a controversial moment and whether Forest should have got more from the game. Thu, 11 Jan 2024 - 354 - Nottingham Forest 2-2 Blackpool: The 1865 FA Cup Match Report
Hmm. After the high of the victories over Newcastle and Man Utd, Forest were almost brought crashing down to earth when they fell two goals down at home to League One Blackpool in the first half an hour, with ex-Red Jordan Gabriel scoring the first (and refusing to celebrate). Fortunately Nico Dominguez headed home to make it 1-2 before half-time, and Morgan Gibbs-White's rocket in the second half saved the Reds from total embarrassment. Despite some chances, Forest will need a replay, disrupting the plans for a winter break. Steven Toplis is joined by Adam to discuss the match. Fri, 05 Jan 2024 - 352 - Nottingham Forest 2-1 Manchester United: The 1865 Premier League Match Report
The Reds recorded their first win over Manchester United in many a year, with goals from Nico Dominguez and Morgan Gibbs-White sandwiching Marcus Rashford's effort (following a goalkeeping ricket from Matt Turner). Rich Ferraro is joined by Baz and Jeremy Davies to discuss Nuno's game plan with two number 10s, the benefits of counter-attacking and the fate of our hapless goalkeeper. We are joined by Jon from the Magnificent 24_7 Manchester United podcast to provide the view from the away end. Fri, 29 Dec 2023 - 350 - Newcastle United 1-3 Nottingham Forest: The 1865 Premier League Match Report
It was a wonderful Christmas present for Reds fans as Chris Wood's hat-trick gave the Reds all the points against the striker's former club. Nuno Espirito Santo made a number of changes to his team but targeted pace down the wings and got a deserved win as a result. Rich Ferraro is joined by George Edwards to discuss the view from the away end and a happy, if long, day for the Forest fans. We get a Geordie view from Jack of the Toon Under Podcast, and we also try and reflect upon what went right, and how the new Head Coach can make sure it wasn't just a flash in the pan. Wed, 27 Dec 2023 - 349 - Nottingham Forest 2-3 Bournemouth: The 1865 Premier League Match Report
The headlines for Nuno's first game were dominated by the referee, who dropped an enormous clanger by sending off Willy Boly and then compounded it (alongside VAR) by not giving anything when Adam Smith handled the ball whilst in the area. Unfortunately the upshot is that, like last year, Forest gave up the lead at home to Bournemouth and ended up on the losing team. Steven Toplis hosts the discussion with Baz and Tom Newton, with the Reds' lack of defensive solidity and the goalkeeping conundrum as hot topics. Can ex-keeper Nuno make a difference? We also welcome Jon Sparks from Cherries Red Army with a view from the away end. Fri, 22 Dec 2023 - 347 - Steve Cooper sacked: 1865 Podcast Special
For our 25th podcast this season, we reflect upon the tenure of Steve Cooper, who was today sacked as Head Coach of Nottingham Forest. We discuss the highs of his time in charge, and why we loved him; we also think about the reasons why results have declined and what might have gone wrong. With Nuno Espirito Santo expected to be confirmed as the new Forest Manager, we talk about the potential reasons for his appointment, and what he might bring - we will have more on this later in the week, after his appointment is rubber-stamped. Presented by Rich Ferraro, with a panel of Steven Toplis, Maradona of the Midlands, Tom Newton and Baz, with Ellie, Adam and Producer Romeo. Tue, 19 Dec 2023 - 346 - Nottingham Forest 0-2 Tottenham Hotspur: The 1865 Premier League Match Report
Despite a creditable performance, it was another home defeat for the Reds as they lacked quality in both boxes. Richarlison scored in first half stoppage time before Dejan Kulusevski embarrassed Matt Turner to double the lead. Yves Bissouma's red card could have offered Forest a lifeline, but Harry Toffolo and Neco Williams were unfortunate to be denied by visiting keeper Vicario. Rich Ferraro is joined by Baz to discuss the game, with a view from the away end by JP from The Cheese Room Podcast. As well as discussing the game, we have to talk about the elephant in the room - relegation is now a plausible threat and the Head Coach's position looks increasingly precarious with each week without a win. Fri, 15 Dec 2023 - 344 - Wolverhampton Wanderers 1-1 Nottingham Forest: The 1865 Premier League Match Report
Steve Cooper went for seven first team changes to stop the rot, and to an extent it worked as the Reds showed a better level of performance and effort to gain a point - and it could have been three as Harry Toffolo should have added to his first-half header which would surely have seen Forest get the win. Steven Toplis is joined by Tom Newton to discuss a game which saw Cooper go back to basics, with the fans once again showing their love for the Head Coach. Rich Ferraro also chips in with his views of the pragmatic approach, and we get a view from Molineux from Dave of the Talking Wolves Podcast. Mon, 11 Dec 2023 - 343 - Fulham 5-0 Nottingham Forest: The 1865 Premier League Match Report
It was nothing short of a disaster at Craven Cottage, as Forest produced arguably the worst performance of Steve Cooper's tenure, leaving the Head Coach looking nervously over his shoulder. Two goals each from Alex Iwobi and the Ghost of Raul Jimenez, plus a closer from Forest-supporting Tom Cairney, frankly embarrassed the Reds on a night with no redeeming features. George Edwards and Steven Toplis share their thoughts after a deep breath and a night's sleep. What does this display tell us about the commitment of the players? Do the Forest supporters really back Steve Cooper? And was the gaffer's apologetic wave at the end an acknowledgment that the end is nigh? Fri, 08 Dec 2023 - 342 - Nottingham Forest 0-1 Everton: The 1865 Premier League Match Report
Losing one home match feels unlucky, losing two in a row feels like something else. The Reds were deservedly defeated in a game where the first goal was clearly going to be important, and after the referee and VAR didn't spot a clear penalty on Ryan Yates, Dwight McNeil made the breakthrough. Rich Ferraro is joined by Maradona of the Midlands and Adam to discuss a day when nothing really worked for Forest, and the fans booed the team off on 90 minutes, with some accusing the players of a lack of desire, and the gaffer of a lack of ideas. The view from the opposition comes from Mike Richards from The Unholy Trinity Podcast. Mon, 04 Dec 2023 - 341 - Nottingham Forest 2-3 Brighton: The 1865 Premier League Match Report
Forest suffered a rare home defeat, but in reality Brighton were the better team. Had it not been for a penalty and an, ahem, interesting red card for visiting skipper Lewis Dunk, the Reds would probably have been dead and buried. As it is, they will rue missed chances, with both Morgan Gibbs-White and Ryan Yates wishing they had done better. Steven and Baz discuss the game, the team selection and the refereeing performance which dominated the post-match discussion; it's fair to say that both sides were pretty unhappy with the performance of Anthony Taylor. We'll be back for the must-win home match against Everton. November's Forest Ramble discussion is here! This month, Rich Ferraro is joined by Baz, Tom and Steven to cover: Everton receive a points deduction; what does this mean for the Premier League? Steve Cooper’s game plan - is the Reds’ success contingent upon listening to the gaffer? What will success look like for Forest this season? As usual, we will also hear the opinions of you, the listeners, we’ll have our monthly quiz and Jeremy Davies will be along with his latest Sketch. Mon, 20 Nov 2023 - 339 - West Ham 3-2 Nottingham Forest: The 1865 Premier League Match Report
West Ham topped and tailed this game with soft goals which gave the hosts all three points. Inbetween, Taiwo Awoniyi and Antony Elanga had equalised, then put the Reds in front, before individual mistakes put the Hammers in control and left Steve Cooper desperately frustrated. Rich is joined by George who is fresh back from the London Stadium, to discuss the match, the atmosphere and game management. We also hear from Will of We Are West Ham with the opposition view, and the thoughts of you, the Forest fans. We'll be back in the international break to review our progress. Mon, 13 Nov 2023 - 338 - Nottingham Forest 2-0 Aston Villa: The 1865 Premier League Match Report
It was back to winning ways for Steve Cooper's Reds as goals from Ola Aina and Orel Mangala led to a welcome three points after what felt like a long time without a victory. The Head Coach and his players got most things right on the day, and although Villa probably weren't at their best, a combination of team and fans kept them at bay. Steven Toplis and Ellie Molloson discuss the game, the early goals and the return of a feelgood factor. We also hear from Neil from For The Love Of Paul McGrath with a fair assessment from the away end, and we have a few words for Caiden Storry, the young man who took on the immense responsibility of playing The Last Post in front of 30,000 fans and a worldwide TV audience - well done to Caiden, the fans and players and coaching staff. Tue, 07 Nov 2023 - 337 - Liverpool 3-0 Nottingham Forest: The 1865 Premier League Match Report
The sporting weekend was overshadowed by the sudden and tragic death of Panthers forward Adam Johnson, and all of us here at 1865 send our condolences to Adam's nearest and dearest. On the pitch, Forest were very much second best and were never in danger of getting their first win at Anfield since 1969. It started badly when Steve Cooper confirmed that Chris Wood would be injured for a few weeks, just as he was coming into form, and Forest had no recognised attackers. Two goals in four minutes put the Reds behind, with a comedy third conceded as Matt Turner lost his head. Steven Toplis is joined by Tom Newton to review the match, with thoughts on Forest's form and Steve Cooper; we also hear from Neil Atkinson from The Anfield Wrap, sharing his views on the game and an optimistic prognosis for Forest's prospects. Tue, 31 Oct 2023 - 336 - Nottingham Forest 2-2 Luton Town: The 1865 Premier League Match Report
It was a disppointing outcome following a promising performance. The headlines will show that Chris Wood scored two goals before two late efforts from Luton saw them take a share of the spoils. However, Forest had enough chances to put the match to bed before then, and the fans will feel that a combination of individual mistakes and poor substitutions cost them the win. Steven is joined by Adam to discuss the match, with emotions running high as it feels like a while since the Reds have had a win. We also hear from Baz with his considered thoughts on the game and get a view from the away end by Luton fan Ryan. Mon, 16 Oct 2023 - 334 - Crystal Palace 0-0 Nottingham Forest: The 1865 Premier League Match Report
It ended up honours even in a game that was last on Match of the Day, but Forest will be a bit disappointed not to have taken all three points after creating the better chances. Harry Toffolo had an effort from distance, before Morgan Gibbs-White hit the post, and Murillo almost scored a memorable goal with a mazy dribble and shot that was saved by the keeper. In the second half, Gonzalo Montiel was unlucky with two scissor kicks, but on the other hand, Jean-Philippe Mateta should really have scored and Jesurun Rak-Sakyi had his effort blocked by Toffolo. Baz is joined by George Edwards, fresh back from Selhurst Park, to discuss the action and the evolution of Forest's style of play, and to discuss how the new squad is shaping up - after a relegation battle last season, are Forest starting to establish themselves in the Premier League? Mon, 09 Oct 2023 - 333 - Nottingham Forest 1-1 Brentford: The 1865 Premier League Match Report
The headlines will show that ten man Forest came back to rescue a point, but really the Reds were the better team in the first thirty minutes and should have capitalised. As it was, after Moussa Niakhate's red card, the Bees took the lead with a soft goal - both the Forest defence and Matt Turner should have done better. Luckily, Brentford keeper Flekken had his own moment just a few minutes later, as Nico Dominguez diverted Harry Toffolo's cross to equalise. Baz and Tom Newton discuss the game, the talking points and which team got the rub of the green on a bad weekend for Premier League officials and VAR. We also hear from Billy The Bee with a view from the away end. We'll be back after the Palace match. Tue, 03 Oct 2023 - 332 - Manchester City 2-0 Nottingham Forest: The 1865 Premier League Match Report
After ten minutes it looked like this was going the way of last season's match at the Etihad; in fact when Forest conceded the first goal they hadn't even managed to string two passes together and barely had 10% possession. However, they did manage to regroup a bit to keep the score down, and the second half was a different proposition after Rodri's red card. Steve Cooper had mixed feelings, knowing that the Reds had given the Champions a two goal start, but despite the improved second half showing they didn't create enough chances. Our match report is presented by Steven Toplis, with Ellie Molloson fresh back from the away end, and the opposition view coming from Michael of the Perth de la Prem podcast. Mon, 25 Sep 2023 - 331 - Nottingham Forest 1-1 Burnley: The 1865 Premier League Match Report
A disappointing result at the City Ground, as an attacking looking Reds line-up failed to capitalise, before Burnley took the lead through some neat play down the left presented Zeki Amdouni with his second goal against Forest in just a few weeks. Fortunately, some excellent hold-up play from Taiwo Awoniyi gave the ball to Callum Hudson-Odoi on the corner of the box, and the debutant curled a beauty into the top corner to make it honours even. Following a night with a red card, disallowed goals and VAR controversies, Baz is joined by Tom to discuss the game, Forest's line-up and future prospects. We are also joined by Joe from TurfCast Podcast with the view from the away end, and our Callum joins us to update on the 25-man Forest squad. We'll be back at the weekend. Tue, 12 Sep 2023 - 329 - Chelsea 0-1 Nottingham Forest: The 1865 Premier League Match Report
A fabulous result for Steve Cooper's Reds, as substitute Antony Elanga calmly slotted home on the break after good work by Mangala, Yates and Awoniyi to win the ball and set the winger free. Forest didn't have much possession, but in truth Matt Turner didn't have that much to do, although the Reds will be grateful for Nicholas Jackson's glaring miss. Steven and Tom report on the Reds' first away victory of the season, which can be summed up by Mauricio Pochettino's (paraphrased) statement that teams that don't score don't win many matches. We also hear from Callum Castel who sums up Forest's very busy transfer window for us. Mon, 04 Sep 2023 - 328 - Nottingham Forest 0-1 Burnley: The 1865 Carabao Cup Match Report
The Reds made an early exit from the Carabao Cup with a home defeat to Vincent Kompany's Burnley. It wasn't a match to remember, and Zeki Amdouni's 90th minute winner was the first shot on target. Ouch. George Edwards is in the podcast hotseat for the first time, and is joined by Adam to review the game, and they discuss the game, the shortcomings of the team and the tactics on the night, with a nod to forthcoming games and the forthcoming transfer deadline. Thu, 31 Aug 2023 - 327 - Manchester United 3-2 Nottingham Forest: The 1865 Premier League Match Report
It all started so well as very early goals from Taiwo Awoniyi (breaking the record for scoring in consecutive Premier League matches) and Willy Boly fired the Reds into a two-goal lead, but then the home team woke up, with the assistance of one or two refereeing moments; Steve Cooper merely commented how quick the official was to blow the whistle, rather than taking his time. Steven and Tom discuss the action, the tactics and what it takes for an away team to get a victory at Old Trafford. We are also joined by Callum Castel with another bumper news roundup. Mon, 28 Aug 2023 - 326 - Nottingham Forest 2-1 Sheffield United: The 1865 Premier League Podcast
The Reds got their first win of the season with a fine late header from Chris Wood. It had looked like Forest were the architects of their own downfall, after taking an early lead through Taiwo Awoniyi's header, they looked good, until they ... well, didn't. The visitors were hoping Gustavo Hamer's equaliser after the break would earn a point, but Stevie Cooper's subs made a difference. Maradona of the Midlands is joined by Baz and Adam to discuss the action, the tactics and the City Ground atmosphere, as well as what we are learning about the Forest squad. We are also joined by Callum Castel with a bumper news roundup and we thank Chad from the Red Half Of Sheffield for providing a view from the opposition. Sat, 19 Aug 2023 - 325 - Arsenal 2-1 Nottingham Forest: The 1865 Premier League Match Report
It was an opening day defeat at The Emirates, although a late rally from the Reds gave the home team a bit of a scare, when an electric break from Awoniyi and Elanga led to the big number 9 netting his first goal of the season. There's still work to do, as discussed by Steven Toplis, with George Edwards and Ellie Molloson, fresh back from north London. We also hear from Arsenal fan Chris, with his views on the game and what he thinks about Forest. We'll be back with a report after Friday's home match against Sheffield United. Mon, 05 Jun 2023 - 316 - Crystal Palace 1-1 Nottingham Forest: The 1865 Premier League Match Report
Waka waka eh eh? The game was probably second to the occasion as Forest's army of travelling fans supported the team to an away point. Having scored Forest's first Premier League goal this season, Taiwo Awoniyi also got the last, hitting double figures in his debut Premier League campaign. However, Will Hughes' header deflected off Willy Boly to earn the hosts a point, which meant that everyone was probably happy enough. Rich Ferraro is joined by Tom and Adam, both fresh back from a long day in the capital, to reflect upon the trip to Selhurst Park and the sense of occasion as the Reds' fans celebrated survival and the players and staff joined in, including Mr Marinakis. Mon, 29 May 2023 - 315 - Nottingham Forest 1-0 Arsenal: The 1865 Premier League Match Report
THEY DID IT! WE DID IT! Forest preserved their Premier League status with a game to spare, as they defeated Arsenal at the City Ground, destroying the visitors' faint title hopes in the process. The game wasn't massively memorable, but the occasion was immense - the City Ground has never been so loud and the team, staff and fans were jubilant at the final whistle. Rich Ferraro is joined by Baz to discuss the game, and the genius that is Stevie Cooper. Emilka Forest joins with her views on the atmosphere, celebrations and Mr Marinakis' decision to stick with the gaffer. Sun, 21 May 2023 - 314 - Chelsea 2-2 Nottingham Forest: The 1865 Premier League Match Report
A tense and battling performance earned the Reds a point, but for a while it felt like it could have been more. A header in each half from Taiwo Awoniyi put Forest in the lead, then pulled them back into contention, either side of Raheem Sterling's (preventable) brace. Rich Ferraro is joined by the Maradona of the Midlands to discuss the game, with Callum Castel providing the latest news roundup. Time will tell if this point is enough, but for now the Reds are three points outside of the relegation zone, before next week's big match against Arsenal rounds off the City Ground season. Sun, 14 May 2023 - 313 - Nottingham Forest 4-3 Southampton: The 1865 Premier League Match Report
Phew. That was way closer than we would have liked, wasn't it? In the end, three very good goals (two for Awoniyi and one for Danilo), plus a Morgan Gibbs-White penalty, saw Forest take the points despite their best efforts to let Saints back into the match. Rich Ferraro is joined by Adam to discuss a game that saw the Reds climb three places, and three points, out of the relegation zone, with special mentions for Mangala, Danilo, Awoniyi, Worrall and the almost-goal by Felipe. Sat, 06 May 2023 - 311 - Brentford 2-1 Nottingham Forest: The 1865 Premier League Match Report
The circumstances of this defeat felt particularly damaging as Brentford scored two late goals, the second of which came after Danilo had to come off due to injury, leaving the Reds with ten men. To add insult to injury, the winning goal was checked and Yoann Wissa was actually marginally onside. It had all felt so promising after Danilo had given the Reds the lead on the stroke of half-time. Baz is joined by Tom Newton to talk about another awayday setback, on a weekend which will likely see Forest back in the drop zone; talking points include tactics, substitutions, goalkeepers, and (once again) injuries. Billy The Bee also joins us from the Beesotted Brentford channel to give his view on the game, and the Reds' chances of survival. Sun, 30 Apr 2023 - 310 - Nottingham Forest 3-1 Brighton and Hove Albion: The 1865 Premier League Match Report
A welcome three points, and five goals in two matches, as Forest beat Brighton with a battling second-half performance, showing that Forest are magic on and off the pitch. Despite missing a first half penalty and conceding another soft goal, Forest drew level in first half stoppage time through Pascal Gross' own goal, and this set them up to win through Danilo and Morgan Gibbs-White (with the second penalty of the match). Rich Ferraro is joined by Baz to talk tactics, formations and injuries, as well as Steve Cooper's post-match words, and the influence of the City Ground crowd (who were LOUD in the second half). Thu, 27 Apr 2023 - 309 - Liverpool 3-2 Nottingham Forest: The 1865 Premier League Match Report
Forest huffed and puffed, but despite scoring twice away from home, it was Diogo Jota and Mo Salah who blew the Reds' house down, as defensive indiscipline from set pieces led to cheap goals conceded. Still, Neco Williams and Morgan Gibbs-White both scored deflected efforts to give the away fans some hope that there is some spirit in the Forest ranks. Steven Toplis and Tom Newton discuss the action after a day when Forest supporters showed solidarity with Hillsborough victims, survivors and their families. Sun, 23 Apr 2023 - 308 - Nottingham Forest 0-2 Manchester United: The 1865 Premier League Match Report
The billionaires of Manchester United beat Nottingham Forest as £100m Antony and £80m Casemiro shone for the visitors. It was the Brazilian winger who took the headlines as he scored one and made one, and provided threat from the wing, while £70m Bruno Fernandes also peppered the Forest goal. At least £50m Antony Martial and £80m Harry Maguire had to sing for their supper, with the England defender fortunate not to concede a penalty which VAR saw, but decided not to give. Rich Ferraro and Baz dissect the action and the talking points, including game plans, formations and injuries, the VAR call and the future of Steve Cooper. We are also joined by Man United fan Steven Barnes who provides a view from the opposition. Mon, 17 Apr 2023 - 307 - Aston Villa 2-0 Nottingham Forest: The 1865 Premier League Match Report
A change in formation and personnel, but the same old result. Following a reasonable showing in the first half, a moment of madness from Jonjo Shelvey gifted a goal to Bertrand Traore. The Reds (yellows) were up against it from that moment on; substitutions were unsuccessful, and the misery was compounded when Forest went down to ten men after using all their subs. Ollie Watkins sealed the result in stoppage time. Steven and Tom discuss the match after getting home from Villa Park, and having a night to sleep on it. Naturally, they discuss the pressure on the manager, and the performance of some of the team, and the effects of injuries as we lose Kouyate and Niakhate again. We also get a view from the opposition, as we are joined by Neil from For The Love Of Paul McGrath. Mon, 10 Apr 2023 - 306 - Leeds United 2-1 Nottingham Forest: The 1865 Premier League Match Report
Forest took an early lead at Elland Road but after that never really laid a glove on a resurgent Leeds side. Orel Mangala's well-taken goal gave the travelling fans some hope, but Jack Harrison's soft equaliser and Luis Sinisterra's curler ensured that the hosts had the lead at the break. The Reds shuffled things around but couldn't make an impression, leaving Steve Cooper eight games without a win. Rich discusses the game with Steven, who is fresh back from Leeds, and apart from the match action, the conversation is dominated by the Head Coach's future - we report on the statement by Evangelos Marinakis and speculate on what this could mean for the rest of the season and beyond. Wed, 05 Apr 2023 - 305 - Nottingham Forest 1-1 Wolverhampton Wanderers: The 1865 Premier League Match Report
A late equaliser from Daniel Podence made a good performance feel like a disappointing result, as Forest failed to capitalise on their chances and take all the points. Brennan Johnson's first half goal gave the Reds the advantage, but it could have been more, especially when Emmanuel Dennis failed to square to Morgan Gibbs-White in the second half. Rich and Baz discuss a feisty encounter, touchline bust-ups and ask the eternal question of "what the hell is VAR for?". We also consider Steve Cooper's tenure on a day when the City Ground faithful showed enormous support for the Head Coach as rumours swirl about his job security. It looks like Forest are going to need to buck their away form - we'll be back after the Leeds and Villa games, Subscribe to 1865 via your podcast provider, and please leave a review, as it helps other Forest supporters find our content: Apple - Spotify - YouTube - Google. Sun, 02 Apr 2023 - 304 - Football decisions: The 1865 Nottingham Forest Podcast, March 2023
After looking in fine fettle, the last few weeks have seen Forest's form fall away. In this month's 1865 Forest Ramble: The table is getting tighter and tighter - can the Reds beat the drop? Has Forest’s January transfer business actually made the team weaker? Why so many injuries? All this and more, as we also have our regular sketch from Jeremy Davies, and we have another round of our Nottingham Forest quiz (and a surprising appearance from an early 90s indie band). Presented by Rich Ferraro, with Baz, the Maradona of the Midlands, Tom Newton, Steven Toplis, and Adam. Fri, 24 Mar 2023 - 303 - Nottingham Forest 1-2 Newcastle United: The 1865 Premier League Match Report
A stoppage-time penalty from Alexander Isak saw the Reds fall to their first home defeat since October, and record consecutive Premier League defeats. Emmanuel Dennis had given Forest the lead with an expert finish before Isak scored his first at the end of the first half. There was also time for another curious VAR call in the home team's favour, before Moussa Niakhaté's mistake gave Isak his chance to seal the win. Rich and Steven discuss the game, with expert analysis from Beth of Newcastle Fan TV, and our very own Adam. We are also joined by Callum with the latest Forest news, and take some time to dissect what Forest need to do after the international break, as things look a bit bleak right now. Sat, 18 Mar 2023 - 302 - Tottenham Hotspur 3-1 Nottingham Forest: The 1865 Premier League Match Report
Another bad away day for the Reds, who were lucky that VAR ruled in their favour after just three minutes, but still fell to another thrashing, this time at the hands of Tottenham Hotspur. Harry Kane scored two and Son Heung Min got the other, with Joe Worrall getting a consolation, and Andre Ayew missing a penalty which would have flattered the Reds. Steven is joined by Tom, who went to the match and despite sleeping on it, is understandably disgruntled. We also hear from JP from the Cheese Room Spurs channel, who is the cheeriest voice you will hear all week, and our very own Jeremy Davies who was exiled in the home end, and provides his thoughts on the Reds' performance. Mon, 13 Mar 2023 - 301 - Nottingham Forest 2-2 Everton: The 1865 Premier League Match Report
It was billed as a six-pointer, a must win, so both teams will be equally (dis)satisfied with a point each. Steve Cooper and Forest will be unhappy with the manner of the goals conceded, although Brennan Johnson's brace of goals ensured that the Reds got a share of the spoils. Rich and Baz discuss the game, Steve Cooper's reaction and the tactical conundrums of how to get the best from the current squad. We are also joined by Mike from The Unholy Trinity Podcast, for a view from the away end. Mon, 06 Mar 2023 - 300 - West Ham 4-0 Nottingham Forest: The 1865 Premier League Match Report
A disastrous day for Steve Cooper and the Reds as the gaffer bemoaned the efforts of his team. In reality, he needs to take his share of the blame for a substitution and formation change at 0-0 that backfired badly, and allowed West Ham to score four goals without reply. Steven hosts, and is joined by Adam, who has fortunately had enough time to calm down a bit after his journey home from east London. Sun, 26 Feb 2023 - 299 - Nottingham Forest 1-1 Manchester City: The 1865 Premier League Match Report
Chris Wood's late equaliser saw Forest grab a point in a match which showcased Steve Cooper's gameplan. The gaffer acknowledged that the Reds had to put their own ambitions to one side for much of this encounter, but subs and tactical changes rattled Pep Guardiola and his team. Baz and Tom discuss the match, the tactics and the genius of the Forest Head Coach. We also hear from Man City fan Mike from the Perth De La Prem podcast, and Callum Castel joins us with the latest Forest news. Mon, 20 Feb 2023 - 298 - Fulham 2-0 Nottingham Forest: The 1865 Premier League Match Report
Forest were deservedly beaten by Marco Silva's Fulham, and despite a 20-minute period of pressure in the second half, can have no complaints about the result as the hosts offered far more threat in front of goal. The Reds were also hamstrung (ahem) by the loss of centre-halves Willy Boly and Scott McKenna after just five minutes. The Maradona of the Midlands is joined by Steven Toplis to discuss things from a Red perspective, and we also hear from Matt from Fulham Focus, providing a view from the home end. Sun, 12 Feb 2023 - 297 - Nottingham Forest 1-0 Leeds United: The 1865 Premier League Match Report
Forest ground out a hard-fought 1-0 victory against Leeds United in this relegation six-pointer. The result was due in no small part to the heroics of debutant keeper Keylor Navas, and a formation and tactical change at half-time by Stevie Cooper. Rich Ferraro is joined by Baz to discuss the match, the table and the fixture list as Forest draw a line under a positive six weeks or so, before entering a tricky run of games. Sun, 12 Feb 2023 - 296 - Manchester United 2-0 Nottingham Forest (5-0 on aggregate): The 1865 Carabao Cup Match Report
The result we dreamed of was overtaken by the result most likely, as Manchester United scored two quick goals in the last quarter of the game to well and truly put this tie to bed. Again, Forest put in a creditable performance, but United will feel as though they were in control. As well as the match, we also include a discussion about the Reds' deadline day transfer activity, as Shelvey, Felipe and Navas (and then Ayew) join the Forest ranks. Presented by Steven Toplis, and our man at Old Trafford, Adam; Callum Castel provides the news roundup. The transfer window is almost over and Forest have added two more Brazilians and a Kiwi. In this month's Forest Ramble: Forest’s summer transfer business: did we manage more hits than misses? Do we salute to Hennessy as the Reds’s number 2, or should we sign a new custodian while Hendo’s on the mendo? There is a real Brazilian influence on the team - will the Big D get Reds fans excited? All this and more, as we also have our regular sketch from Jeremy Davies, we discuss mental health and mentality, and we will have a new quiz for you Presented by Rich Ferraro, with Baz, the Maradona of the Midlands, Tom Newton, Baz, and Adam; Callum Castel provides the news roundup and there is an interview with Tom Home from blOKes. Mon, 30 Jan 2023 - 294 - Nottingham Forest 0-3 Manchester United: The 1865 Carabao Cup Match Report
Forest were comprehensively beaten in the end by a Manchester United team who took an early lead through Marcus Rashford, before goals at the end of each half by Weghorst and Fernandes sealed the deal. However, the Reds did have a really good spell in the first half, and it could have been so different if Sam Surridge's equaliser had stood when Forest were 1-0 down; as it was, VAR ruled that the striker's shoelace was offside. Rich Ferraro is joined by Baz to discuss the game, making comparisons with last month's 3-0 defeat to the same opponents, and discussing disallowed goals, Danilo, Dennis and defending.
