Portugal. The Man is a Grammy-winning band that fuses elements of psychedelia and classic rock, with a dash of modern pop and a willingness to experiment, and founding member and bassist, Zachary Carothers, isn’t shy to admit it was all a bit of a fluke at first.
Not ones to shy away from speaking their mind, both on and off their records, their last album was responsible for a song that became omnipresent the world over (“Feel It Still”) and became such an earworm, you never got tired of hearing it.
From growing up in Alaska, to the effect of moving to Portland on the band’s trajectory, to falling in love with South Africa after their 2015 tour opened their eyes to the beauty of the country, Zach speaks candidly about all the places he’s been and the places he’s planning on going as he’s getting older.

Leaving her native Zimbabwe for the hustle and bustle of London, this beat siren fell in love with house and upon returning to Africa, gradually began her own musical education after a chance Gumtree encounter set her on a path to become the Queen of SA Afro-house music.

This path ultimately saw him become the youngest ever recipient of an award at the SA Hip Hop Awards in 2015, release a triple-platinum selling album in 2018, and ultimately go on to sign to a historic deal with Def Jam Records in early 2020.
Having toured 32 new markets last year alone, this trailblazer has a knack for filling up arenas and dominating the stage, and at only 23-year-old he is undisputedly the voice of a new generation with a third hit album (A Zulu Man With Some Power), mini-documentary (Origins) and a Netflix special (Zulu Man in Japan) under his belt in 2020 so far.

Wed, 07 Oct 2020 - 35min - 167 - Tresor: Redux
In this episode we're doing things a bit differently, getting African pop phenomenon and good friend to the show, Tresor, back at the mic for our first official catch-up. And it's fitting because his original podcast was one of our most streamed of all time.
The last time we spoke to Tresor, he promised Texx, when we did this again it would be at his beach house in Malibu and we feel like it would have been, but Covid-19 really went and screwed everything up.
But – clearly it hasn’t stopped him from grinding because – break out the champagne – his third album, Nostalgia, has officially been certified GOLD.
So sit back and listen to history in the making as we catch up Tresor now and follow things up with his original podcast from back in May.

Thu, 03 Sep 2020 - 33min - 162 - A Look Back
We honestly can’t believe that so much has happened over the last two months of Texx Talks Season 2.
We just need to get real for a second - the process of recording Season 2 in lockdown has not been without its ups and downs.
And if it wasn’t for the whole team, scattered around South Africa, keeping each other sane, we all would have lost our collective minds.
But between the support of you, the listener, and TOMS - we managed to raise the bar and smash all of our expectations.
So now let's LOOK BACK.

Wed, 24 Jun 2020 - 02min - 152 - The Look Back
For this episode we will be looking back at some of our favourite moments from Season 1, reveal what went into the recording of each episode, and hit you with some exciting announcements in anticipation of Season 2.
But first, we think it’s high time we properly introduce ourselves.
While almost everyone who knows our host calls her Texx, her real name is Tecla Ciolfi and she’s been a part of the South African music industry for the last 10 years - namely as the founder of Texx and the City, a music website that spotlights the best underground & unsigned musicians in South Africa across multiple genres.
Texx Talks was born when Texx and producer, Jonathan Inggs, got together at Van Hunks in Cape Town for a day drinking session. Cut to another day drinking session a few months later at The Royale in Joburg, and Texx Talks was born.
Just like Texx and The City, the aim behind this podcast is to spotlight the multiple genres that make South Africa, and to a larger extent, Africa, such a rich musical melting pot.
Together with our second producer Matthew Loots, who edits Texx Talks to perfection, and Al Clapper who assists in doing research on each interview subject, we really could not have asked for a better team.
So now let's LOOK BACK.

Striving to rectify western assumptions and shine a light on post-apartheid South Africa from a contemporary perspective, there are few SA bands like BCUC, who draw deep inspiration from indigenous music, infusing them with raps and a very raw rock ‘n’ roll attitude.

Thu, 02 Jun 2022 - 46min - 122 - Zulu Mkhathini
Zulu Mkhathini is a creative polymath who really has done it all and makes anyone feel like they could do more with their lives and their time, to be honest.
With a striking latest album – that took four years to complete and was then subjected to a bit of a rocky release because of Covid-19 – he navigated an unorthodox release campaign like a pro and continues to reinforce the project by telling a very personal story.
From disappointing loved ones and then making good with an ethic that screams “do better”, Zulu is walking the road that few even know how to find, let alone wear it thin.

Always looking to break new ground, his latest album employs a broader palette fusing amapiano, Afro-house, and Afro-tech – and slowing down a few tracks that he’s seeing as a bit of shift in the genre, calling it gqom 2.0.
From hearing his music in a taxi for the first time, to that first trip up to Johannesburg, to touring the world, DJ Lag seems to have taken it all in his stride, one giant leap at a time.

For our 100th episode and the start of Africa Month we chat to a South African rap powerhouse whose lyrical flexing is world class, a lady who has unapologetically blazed her own trail, preaching empowerment and taking names on whichever stage she steps.
From the moment the country heard her hot, on point rhymes it was very clear that a new kind of hip hop star was born and her career has been equally as interesting to follow as it unfolds.

Sun, 27 Mar 2022 - 28min - 112 - From the Vault: Black Motion
While we are cooking away at our new season we are bringing back this gem that really deserves to be heard again.
Black Motion is Thabo “Smol” Mabogwane and Robert “Murdah” Mohosana, the duo who have been flying the flag high for Tshwane, the undisputed house music capital of South Africa, for the last decade.
Their percussion-driven electronic dance music and wildly energetic performances, helped establish them as purveyors of South Africa’s burgeoning house scene, as they travelled the world and climbed the charts to praise and critical acclaim.
From their early roots in Shoshanguve, to their deeply spiritual musical journey, Smol chats the importance of their Pedi culture and how they built their sound on the foundation of the drum, executed in the familiar style of house music.

Wed, 23 Mar 2022 - 46min - 111 - YoungstaCPT
Throughout his career, rapper YoungstaCPT has fused local slang with socially-conscious content and his experiences growing up in the Mother City (Cape Town, South Africa). From switching between nods to local hip hop heroes and American West Coast icons, his music spans eras and geographies and it’s taken us eight seasons to get him here, but we never stopped trying.
YoungstaCPT is a continuation of a rich and diverse culture in Cape Town, the birthplace of South African Hip hop culture. Committed to a telling of a lived experience of struggle in the past, present and future, YoungstaCPT exists only to be a custodian of a proud tradition and add to the mythos of the legends that have come before him.

ByLwansta was first featured on Texx and the City back in 2016 with his debut EP “Your Absolutely Right”. Over the course of the last 6 years he’s become known for his biting lyricism and his charismatic flow and his attention to every single detail of the roll out of his last few releases is on a whole other level, worthy of massive praise.
Relating to creative output primarily through colour palates and inanimate objects, they serve to set the scene for a meticulous voyage of self discovery that has culminated in SPIGØNGET (Chapter 3), a study in the seemingly mundane, brought forward in a rich audio joint. t

Sun, 27 Feb 2022 - 23min - 106 - Shortstraw
This time around we have the frontman of an indie rock band that has a knack for churning out those singalong earworms.
With one of the most exciting and energetic shows across the board, they were a staple on every festival stage and Texx owns more of their merch than any other South African band, so their much-anticipated comeback is making her super excited to break out her t-shirts again.
From ill-advised band names to pop culture references that fuel the songs that the band has no choice to play on any set, Shortstraw is back and they don’t know what they are doing for their new album release.

Sun, 30 Jan 2022 - 04min - 100 - From the Vault - Judith Sephuma
Our Season has come to an end and while the team is taking a well-earned break, I want to highlight an episode that has stuck with me long after the mics were switched off. Judith Sephuma is an icon, a legend and a trailblazer, always authentic and true to herself, much like our friends at Ray-Ban. Whatever life has thrown at her, she has stood tall and declared: YouAreOn
Ray-Ban is your reflection in the mirror of your truest self, it is the shade on a hot summer’s day, it is your own focus through any spotlight that may be on you. Together, Texx Talks and Ray-Ban are saying: you got a challenge for us? #YouAreOn
You can’t predict the light. But with Texx Talks and Ray-Ban you are always ready to capture it by living each day in the moment. #YouAreOn.

Wed, 15 Dec 2021 - 1h 00min - 99 - From the Vault - James Blake
Our Season has come to an end and while the team is taking a well-earned break, I want to highlight just one more episode that I can’t get enough of. My interview with James Blake was sort of a bucket list one for me and he also exemplifies what it means to be one’s truest self and live life unapologetically saying: YouAreOn
Ray-Ban is your reflection in the mirror of your truest self, it is the shade on a hot summer’s day, it is your own focus through any spotlight that may be on you. Together, Texx Talks and Ray-Ban are saying: you got a challenge for us? YouAreOn
You can’t predict the light. But with Texx Talks and Ray-Ban you are always ready to capture it by living each day in the moment. YouAreOn.
Define your style at superbalist.com
James Blake is a man who has gripped an entire generation with his melodic prowess and lyrical aptitude, making music that is steeped in an EQ that few of his contemporaries can match.
We love him here in South Africa and every time he goes live on Instagram we make up 90% of his audience and drop highly inappropriate, but always hilarious comments to show him just how much we love his singularly unique sound.
Tecla chats to James Blake ahead of our four year wait for his new album, Friends That Break Your Heart, about dog training, how to get by in a lockdown, and why going blonde isn’t all it’s cracked up to be, and much more!
