Thu, 28 Jun 2018 - 46min - 9 - Annette Richmond: Fashionista, Digital Nomad and a Body Positive Voice for Plus Size Travelers
Today I'm talking with Annette Richmond, fashion stylist, writer, digital nomad and creator of Fat Girls Traveling – a body positive online community for larger women travelers.
Not only am I inspired by all the traveling Annette is doing (and jealous of her nomad lifestyle), I'm also deeply inspired by her commitment to promoting a more diverse representation of travelers. Her hugely popular community (14K Instagram followers and over 4K Facebook group members) is shattering stereotypes and killing the notion that travel is only for thin people. And it also provides a supportive environment where women can share experiences, advice and resources – and encourage each other to travel more.
During our conversation Annette shares how she started traveling more herself, why she started Fat Girls Traveling, and great tips for travelers of any size.
More about Annette: Along with writing for her own blog, Annette is a contributor for PopSugar, Ravishly and The Fat Girls Guide. She's been featured in many publications including; Teen Vogue, Allure, Self, Shape, El le UK, The Mic, Refinery29, Hello Giggles, and Yahoo Style. A self-proclaimed Fat Girl, Richmond is a staunch supporter of the Body Positive Movement. From dressing top models and celebrities to trend and color forecasting, Annette has had every imaginable job in the fashion industry over the last ten years. Currently a Senior Stylist at Stitch Fit, she has styled thousands of women – and her work has been seen in music videos, magazines and on the red carpet. Traveling is her latest obsession. She's visited 18 countries in the last 3 years and writes about her adventures as a Fat Black Woman traveling the world. She is a voice for Fat Fashionistas and Fat Travelers everywhere.

Beth is also the creator of the Women in Travel Summit (WITS), an annual event for women travel influencers, bloggers and industry members. I attended WITS 2018 earlier this month in beautiful Québec City, Canada – and was inspired and energized by the informative session topics, engaging speakers and vibrant community of women travelers.
Of course I had to interview the woman who started it all.

Thu, 31 May 2018 - 49min - 7 - Jessica Hansen: Doing Good through Social Impact Travel
Today I'm interviewing Jessica Hansen, Global Engagement Manager for Kiva (the world's largest microfinance non-profit) and a lifelong traveler who is deeply committed to doing good in the world. I recently had the opportunity to hear her speak at the fantastic 2018 Women in Travel Summitin Québec City. I immediately wanted to invite her on my podcast to share about her extensive travel and in-country work experiences, as well as her insights into voluntourism and social impact travel.
It is difficult to know what impact our jet-setting has and how much money is actually going into the local economy rather than benefiting other parts of the tourism industry. It’s also hard to know which voluntourism organizations are actually helping, versus those that (while well-intentioned) are actually hurting people or the environment in the areas they seek to serve.
In this episode, Jessica talks about what to look for when seeking to do good while traveling, what could be red flags, and which organizations are doing incredible work connecting travel to positive social impact (specific resources are listed in the episode show notes). She also shares some of her own personal travel journeys, and what led her to embark on a life of international service. Our conversation left me not only inspired, but also deeply motivated to dedicate my future travel to doing good.
More about Jessica Hansen: Through her work with Kiva, Jessica builds partnerships and community to alleviate poverty and create opportunity worldwide. She is passionate about helping people unleash their capacity to impact the world positively and to think critically about the best and most sustainable ways to do so. Prior to Kiva, she worked in rural Kenya with Nuru International, co-creating programs to raise literacy levels in rural primary schools. She also spent over a decade working with refugees through organizations including UNHCR, the International Rescue Committee, and Mercy Corps. Her career has focused on the protection and empowerment of women and girls, increased access to education, and the rights and safety of refugees and immigrants, with fieldwork primarily in East Africa and Southeast Asia. She holds a BA of International Politics from the University of Central Oklahoma/University of Leicester and an MSW in International Social Development from the University of New South Wales in Sydney, Australia.

Fri, 18 May 2018 - 56min - 6 - Rita Golden Gelman: Travel Lessons from a Nomadic Life
Today I’m interviewing Rita Golden Gelman - an extraordinary and delightful world traveler. Now 80 years old, she spent 30 years of her later life without a permanent residence. Author of the New York Times bestseller: Tales of a Female Nomad: Living at Large in the World, she has endless travel stories and lessons to share. A prolific children's book author who wrote while on the road, Rita was a working nomad well before the current "digital nomad" trend. She also edited and published a collection of stories from women travelers: Female Nomad and Friends: Tales of Breaking Free and Breaking Bread Around the World. She was invited to share her life and travel perspectives in a TEDx talk: The Joy of Connecting.
Rita has literally traveled around the world – living in often rural places in Mexico, Indonesia, Africa, Laos, Thailand, Guatemala, Colombia, India, Tanzania and more. Trained in Anthropology at UCLA, Rita mostly lived with families, immersing herself in local culture as much as possible. "People are my passion. Unlike a traditional nomad, when I go somewhere, I settle in with the locals long enough to share the minutes of their days, to know the seasons of their lives, and to be trusted with their secrets. I have lived with people in thatched huts, slept in their gilded palaces, and worshipped with them at godly ceremonies and dens of black magic. I have also cooked with women on fires all over the world."
Join our conversation as we explore the importance of connecting authentically with people wherever you travel, trusting your unfolding experiences, and going with the flow. I absolutely loved Rita's adventurous spirit, her wisdom, and her fascinating stories. I hope that this episode leaves you as deeply inspired as I am.
You can follow and learn more about Rita at ritagoldengelman.com. Links to resources that she mentions during the interview can be viewed in the online show notes.
Sun, 22 Apr 2018 - 53min - 5 - Suzzanne Lacey: Exploring Civil Rights History Via Travel
Today I’m interviewing Suzanne Lacey, founder and Executive Director of Museum Without Walls, which for 17 years has been providing middle and high school students unique travel opportunities that explore accounts of intolerance and racism at the sites where they happened. The non-profit organization's vision is to educate and inspire students to become informed, engaged and motivated leaders who are emboldened to promote social justice in our communities.
Along with her work leading civil and human rights trips, Suzzanne also started Sterling Silver Tours, which leads regular group tours to the U.K. Originally inspired by and based on the popular show Downtown Abbey, it now features the "Queen's Tour" as its centerpiece travel experience.
Join our conversation as we explore meaningful travel that leads to understanding and transformation, the challenges and benefits that come with traveling for work, and thoughts on traveling as a woman of color. (And of course it wouldn't be a Globetrotter Lounge episode without some tips for booking affordable travel.)
I was left deeply inspired by Suzzane's commitment to using travel and storytelling to shine the light on history's most difficult chapters - that our young people might become inspired and motivated to work towards a better future. The work she does highlights yet again the transformative power of travel - especially when directed in such a powerful and purposeful way. I hope that this episode leaves you inspired as well.
