Michael “Rod” Rodriguez is the President and CEO of the Global War on Terrorism Memorial Foundation. Rod joined the U.S. Army in 1992 and attended the Special Forces Assessment and Selection course to become a Green Beret in 1997. In 2013, he was medically retired due to numerous combat injuries. His last assignment as a Green Beret came as a Sniper Instructor assigned to the JFK Special Warfare Center (Range 37) at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. He has deployed ten times in service to our nation.
Rod’s involvement with the GWOT Memorial Foundation began in 2016 when he joined the organization as a board member in support of the Foundation’s sole mission to construct a Memorial on the National Mall that appropriately honors the profound service and sacrifices of all who served in America’s longest war. Rod later led the organization as President and CEO from March 2018 to September 2020 before taking a leave of absence for a personal matter and overseas deployment. He was re-appointed President and CEO in December 2021.
From 2015-2018, Rod served as a member of President George W. Bush’s Military Service Initiative Advisory Council, advising, and supporting the President and leadership of the Bush Institute on strategies and programs to support veterans and their families. In 2013, Rod was appointed as a Fellow of the Manhattan-based Explorers Club, an international organization dedicated to the advancement of scientific exploration and inquiry, for his research on traumatic brain injuries and post-traumatic stress.
In August of 2021, Rod directly assisted in evacuating U.S. allied personnel and their families from Afghanistan, and he continues to provide support for their resettlement. He helps several other non-profits in both veteran and non-veteran spaces. He also provides leadership advice and training to local, state, and national government agencies, corporations, and private businesses. Rod holds a B.S. in Strategic Studies and Defense Analysis and an M.A. in Diplomacy with a concentration in International Conflict Management, both from Norwich University.
As an artist who works with metal, Rod is a passionate advocate for the power of art to heal, connect, and inspire us all. In addition to being part of several private collections including the British Royal Family, his work has been exhibited at the George W. Bush Presidential Center in Dallas, Texas and the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. Rod also works with the National Endowment for the Arts Creative Forces initiative.
Rod is a New Mexico native who comes from a family with a strong tradition of military service. Both his grandfathers served during World War II, and his father is a Vietnam veteran. His eldest son is currently serving with the 82nd Airborne Division and has deployed twice, one of which was to the same regions of Afghanistan as Rod. Rod is a committed outspoken advocate for veterans and their families and often speaks publicly on the need to increase understanding of life experiences between the civilian and military communities. Most importantly, Rod is a proud grandfather, father, and hermano to many.

- 132 - Ep 129 - Black Hawk Down Army Ranger - First Sergeant (Ret.) Matt Eversmann - Part 1
Part 2 of 2
On October 3, 1993, Matt was placed in charge of a group of Army Rangers to lead a daytime raid against an eager enemy militia. Matt experienced the horrors of war when he and his fellow soldiers were trapped in a hostile district of Mogadishu and marked for death by an angry mob. His inspiring story of survival was immortalized in the epic film, Black Hawk Down, which recounts the harrowing experience. For his actions on the battlefield he was awarded the Bronze Star Medal with Valor device.
Matt returned from Somalia committed to teaching the next generation of warriors. During his remaining time in uniform, he worked at the Army War College, taught at The Johns Hopkins University and finally deployed to Iraq where he lived with the Iraqi Army for 15 months during The Surge. He remained on active duty until May of 2008, when he retired after 20 years of service.
Committed to sharing the lessons he learned in the military, Matt draws parallels from his experiences to highlight the importance of leadership, followership, courage and responsibility within any team or enterprise. Drawing on lessons learned as a military and corporate leader and consultant, he shows organizations how to navigate today’s chaotic “urban battlefield” of constant change and uncertainty to build and train teams responsible and resilient enough to handle “strategic shock” — the unforeseen disasters that will happen — without missing a beat.
Unambiguously humble, gracious and warm, his powerful story and straightforward insights on instilling these values stay with business leaders long after the applause has ended. His experiences in healthcare, non-profit, and data management industries have solidified his passion to prepare “average people to tackle incredible things.”
Matt recently returned from Afghanistan where he filmed a documentary for PBS in the shadows of Tora Bora. His film, Send Me, highlights the tremendous advances in battlefield medicine since his days on the dusty streets of Mogadishu.
He is co-author of The Battle of Mogadishu and — with James Patterson — of two books that highlight the courage of everyday men and women, Walk in My Combat Boots and ER Nurses — both of which became immediate New York Times bestsellers.
Matt and his wife, Tori, run a consulting company that helps companies develop successful veteran hiring programs. They also co-host a weekly podcast called The Veterans Nation.

As a dog owner himself, Tony was tired of seeing the long ingredients listed on the back of big brand dog treats and wanted a healthier option for his pups, Harley and Bella. Sadly, those "healthier" options came with hefty price tags and STILL contained too many ingredients. That's when the light bulb turned on and Tony went to work, crafting and creating healthy, all natural dog treats with minimal ingredients that are still affordable for the everyday American.
What started as a dream in the kitchen of an RV and selling treats at a single Farmers' Market, Harley's Treats USA has grown by leaps and bounds in just over two years. We are now available at Farmers' Markets in Washington, Arizona, and Florida. Now we have our very own storefront and production facility in Mesa, Arizona. Throughout all this growth we have stuck to Tony's vision: limited, natural, and healthy ingredients at an affordable price while hiring US Military Veterans and their family members.

YouTube - USA Cares YouTubeThu, 15 Jun 2023 - 123 - EP 120 - CEO of Mack Belts and retired Navy SEAL - Mack Alexander
Mack Belts™ was founded by retired Navy SEAL Mack Alexander who worked as a lead breacher and assaulter, deploying to Africa and Yemen. In July of 2018, while conducting helicopter casting operations off the coast of Africa in support of Operation Spartan Shield, Mack sustained a head injury. Mack finished his final deployment, but after returning home to the United States imaging and test revealed the damage was worse than expected. The severity of the brain injury would cause him to spend two years in recovery at Naval Medical Center San Diego, working to regain speech, balance, realigning his eyes, and other cognitive impairments due to traumatic brain injury. He was retired early from the SEAL Teams.
It was while shopping for a dress shirt at a local thrift store that he saw an old leather belt for sale for $1. He got the idea that he could turn that leather belt into a dog collar. After doing this a few times he felt the skill of leather crafting was bringing him a sense of peace and knew it could be beneficial for other veterans. He shared his newfound passion with other combat veterans and assembled the Mack Belts team! Mack Belts started in a tiny garage and has now grown to become a premium U.S.A. leather belt manufacturer with thousands of special operations veteran-crafted belts being worn by patriots all over the world! What makes our belts even more special is that with every purchase a donation is made to active duty military.

This episode we welcome retired United States Army General and former Director of the Central Intelligence Agency David H. Petraeus to the Studio.
BIO
General Petraeus served over 37 years in the U.S. military, culminating his career with six consecutive commands as a general officer , five of which were in combat, including command of the Surge in Iraq, command of U.S. Central Command, and command of coalition forces in Afghanistan.
Following retirement from the military and after Senate confirmation by a vote of 94-0, he served as Director of the CIA during a period of significant achievements in the global war on terror, the establishment of important Agency digital initiatives, and substantial investments in the Agency’s most important asset, its human capital.
General Petraeus graduated with distinction from the U.S. Military Academy and is the only person in Army history to be the top graduate of both the demanding U.S. Army Ranger School and the U.S. Army’s Command and General Staff College. He also earned a Ph.D. from Princeton University’s School of Public and International Affairs.
General Petraeus taught international relations and economics at the U.S. Military Academy in the mid-1980s, he was a Visiting Professor of Public Policy at the Honors College of the City University of New York from 2013 through 2016, and he was for 6 years a Judge Widney Professor at the University of Southern California and a Senior Fellow at Harvard University’s Belfer Center. He is currently a Visiting Fellow and Lecturer at Yale University’s Jackson Institute, Co-Chairman of the Global Advisory Council of the Woodrow Wilson Center for International Scholars, Senior Vice President of the Royal United Services Institute, and a Member of the Trilateral Commission, Council on Foreign Relations, and the Aspen Strategy Group, as well as a member of the boards of the Atlantic Council, the Institute for the Study of War, and over a dozen veterans service organizations. He is also (to his amazement) a LinkedIn Top Voice.
Over the past 20 years, General Petraeus was named one of America’s 25 Best Leaders by U.S. News and World Report, a runner-up for Time magazine’s Person of the Year, the Daily Telegraph man of the year, a Time 100 selectee, Princeton University’s Madison Medalist, and one of Foreign Policy magazine’s top 100 public intellectuals in three different years. General Petraeus has earned numerous honors, awards, and decorations, including four Defense Distinguished Service Medals, the Bronze Star Medal for Valor, two NATO Meritorious Service Medals, the Combat Action Badge, the Ranger Tab, and Master Parachutist and Air Assault Badges. He has also been decorated by 14 foreign countries and he is believed to be the only person who, while in uniform, threw out the first pitch of a World Series game and did the coin toss for a Super Bowl.

He joined the Marine Corps Reserves right out of high school and was assigned to MP Co "C" in Dayton, Ohio as an 0311 Rifleman. He was crossed trained as a 9051 Graves Registration/Mortuary Affairs Marine in the early 1990's. in 2003 his platoon of Mortuary Affairs specialists was activated to head to Kuwait, and he participated in the invasion of Iraq in 2003. After his surgeries, he volunteered once again to go back to Iraq in 2005, but this time as the Staff NCOIC of all Mortuary Affairs operations in and around Al Taqaddum, Iraq.
