The long-awaited top priority for Juventus’ 2023-24 season has been achieved, although it was completed in the kind of fashion that is all too fitting of how the Bianconeri have played during the second half of the year. Thu, 02 May 2024 - 229 - The Old Lady Speaks, Episode 226: Juve improve, but still can’t get past Milan
Juventua actually played fairly well for a large stretch of time against a good team, but still couldn’t capitalize on the fact that AC Milan had a second-string defense in Turin, as Max Allegri’s squad suffered their seventh draw in the last 13 games. On Episode 226 of The Old Lady Speaks Podcast, we discuss: Takeaways from Juventus’ scoreless draw on Saturday — including how the Bianconeri showed again that they are capable of playing a different style of football like they did in the second half against Milan, how we all are left wondering why it took until the second half to put a very shorthanded and makeshift Milan defense under serious pressure. Thoughts on Juve’s draw with Milan. It wasn’t that bad, was it? Max Allegri changed things up and got them mostly right in the second half, but why can’t we have those nice things more often? What needs to happen for Juventus to not miss out on the Champions League next season? Twitter questions — including which players we’re excited to see come back form loan, why we’ve barely heard from Juventus’ board of directors lately, if Federico Chiesa is worth the potential pay raise he wants with his new contract, if there’s any chance of Juve bringing Max Allegri back for next season due to financial reasons, and what about Allegri winning fewer trophies than Juve’s two previous managers although he’s been in Turin for three years. Mon, 29 Apr 2024 - 228 - The Old Lady Speaks, Episode 225: Coppa Italia thoughts, looking ahead to Juve-Milan
Juventus made it into the Coppa Italia final in less than stellar fashion, kicking off a big week in which they could even end up putting some heat on second-place Milan before the weekend is over. On Episode 225 of The Old Lady Speaks Podcast, we discuss: Juventus making the Coppa Italia final despite losing to Lazio on Tuesday night. Thoughts on two very big suspensions that will play very big roles in the Coppa Italia final. The Alex Sandro problem that is still prevalent at Juventus. Thoughts on this weekend’s showdown with AC Milan knowing that there are also some key suspensions happening that could benefit Juventus. Thu, 25 Apr 2024 - 227 - The Old Lady Speaks, Episode 224: More struggles, dropped points for Max Allegri and Juventus
Juventus’ trip to Sardinia proved to be like so many other performances that we’ve seen over the last three months, with a 2-2 draw all the team muster after falling behind by two goals in the first half. On Episode 224 of The Old Lady Speaks Podcast, we discuss: Takeaways from Juventus’ draw against Cagliari — how we’ve run out of original things to say about how Juve are playing right now, how it’s been a while since we’ve since Max Allegri actually do some riskier things with his subs and roll the dice, and how this team looks to be mentally fried with what has gone on the last three months. What went wrong for Juventus against Cagliari. Why this kind of stuff keeps happening? Serie A referees and VAR: the gift that keeps on giving. Twitter questions — including what our realistic list of signings and departures look like, could Cristiano Giuntoli’s recent comments actually mean that Juve are entertaining another season with Max Allegri, and if we are owed an apology for waiting so long to see the Chiesa-Vlahovic-Yildiz trident in action. Mon, 22 Apr 2024 - 226 - The Old Lady Speaks, Episode 223: The Turin derby ends in a scoreless mess
The second Derby della Mole of the season saw Juventus drop more points as they try and lock up a spot in the Champions League, with Dusan Vlahovic struggling in front of goal and Max Allegri doing ... well, Max Allegri things. On Episode 223 of The Old Lady Speaks Podcast, we discuss: Takeaways from the the scoreless draw with Torino — how Dusan Vlahovic is starting to test some patience levels, how much Juventus seriously set themselves up without much width, and how Juve’s second-half approach was very much like a Juve team of old. Juventus’ second-half performance against Torino was just ... bad. Why does Max Allegri continue to do these things like he did in the second half against Torino? And because Juve dropped points again against a team they shouldn’t drop points against, the race for the Champions League becomes just that much more of a stressful proposition. Twitter questions — including of Max Allegri’s self-help book actually has a misprint, how the heck can Juve’s players rediscover their ironclad mentality of yesteryear, how to avoid the constant loop of changing coaches, what about players struggling despite Allegri getting all of the blame, and just how good of a striker is Dusan Vlahovic after misses like he had against Torino. Thu, 11 Apr 2024 - 224 - The Old Lady Speaks, Episode 221: Juventus get two straight wins for the first time since January
Juventus had their first successful week in quite a few weeks, with wins over Lazio in the Coppa Italia and their first league win in over a month, against Fiorentina, hopefully providing some positive vibes for the first time in a long time. On Episode 221 of The Old Lady Speaks Podcast, we discuss: Takeaways from the week that was — including how it was nice to see Juventus play some competent kind of football again and how Sunday’s win over Fiorentina felt like a carbon copy from what happened in Florence back in November. Thoughts on Juventus’ win over Fiorentina to give them their first victory in six weeks. Corto muso is back, baby! Thoughts on Juventus’ win over Lazio in the first leg of the Coppa Italia semifinals. Twitter questions — including our confidence level for Juventus maintaining their spot in the top four, and how are three non-Thiago Motta names we could see potentially replacing Max Allegri as Juve’s manager next season. Two weeks without a game wasn’t enough to turn the tide for Juventus, as Max Allegri’s squad suffered another defeated Saturday, this time to a Lazio squad that was playing its first game with a new manager. Mon, 25 Mar 2024 - 219 - The Old Lady Speaks, Episode 216: It goes from bad to worse for Juventus
Sunday’s lunchtime kickoff didn’t result in Juventus’ poor run of form getting any better, as a scoreless draw against Genoa extended the Bianconeri’s struggles into the first international break of 2024. On Episode 216 of The Old Lady Speaks Podcast, we discuss: Takeaways from Juventus’ scoreless draw against Genoa — including how Dusan Vlahovic’s sending off reminded us of his old habbits of being irritated on the field, how nice Genoa’s away kit is, how things that Juve are now again struggling again are things we thought they had gotten over in the first half of the season. This eight-game run from Juventus has us tired. Thankfully, Juventus had a very strong first half of the season because the last eight games have not helped cement their standing in the top four. The vibes are bad. Twitter questions — including if there is any way Max Allegri fixes this and get his team back on track, and if we had to wake up so early in the U.S. to watch this game then why did it look like the team was so sleepy in Italy. Mon, 18 Mar 2024 - 218 - The Old Lady Speaks, Episode 215: Juventus do Juventus things, drop more points
It was the same kind of deal that we’ve seen from Max Allegri’s squad so many times over the last month and a half, with a game that Juventus could have won ending with yet another case of points being dropped. On Episode 215 of The Old Lady Speaks Podcast, we discuss: Takeaways from Juventus’ draw against Atalanta — including how the defense continues to struggle and how that is supposed to be Max Allegri’s strongest point, how Arek Milik is representative of one of the biggest issues that this team has (translate: he’s not great despite scoring a goal), and how Fabio Miretti had another solid performance. So what the heck happened to Atalanta? What the heck has happened over the last seven games? There’s no singular reason as to why Juventus have struggled over the last month and a half, either. From manager to players, it’s basically on everybody. Twitter questions — including why things have gone so bad so quickly and how could Juventus even begin to get out of this sudden mess. Thu, 07 Mar 2024 - 216 - The Old Lady Speaks, Episode 213: Juventus let one slip away against Napoli
The first game of March brought a better team performance for Max Allegri and Juventus, but the Bianconeri’s finishing let them down mightily in a loss to Napoli that has extended a six-game run with very few points earned. On Episode 213 of The Old Lady Speaks Podcast, we discuss: Takeaways from the loss to Napoli — how it was a little odd to see Joseph Nonge subbed immediately out after he gave up the penalty late in the second half, how Fabio Miretti was a quite pleasant surprise against Napoli, and how Juve’s defense certainly fell asleep Juventus’ finishing against Napoli ... NOT VERY GOOD! So as much as people will blame Joseph Nonge, it’s the finishing in front of goal why Juventus didn’t win on Sunday night, right? Juventus executed their plan against Napoli quite well. It was the execution of shots in front of goal that let the team down. Twitter questions — including how we are feeling and what adult beverage(s) we might turn to after a game like that one, if Allegri was right to sub off Joseph Nonge right after he committed the game-changing foul in the penalty area, and how will the starting lineup that was used against Napoli will be looked upon. Thu, 29 Feb 2024 - 214 - The Old Lady Speaks, Episode 211: Juve actually won a game in February
It wasn’t pretty, but Juventus finally got a win in February, with relegation-threatened Frosinone giving the Bianconeri quite a scare before Daniele Rugani’s stoppage-time winner allowed his team to collect all three points. On Episode 211 of The Old Lady Speaks Podcast, we discuss: Takeaways from the week that was — including how fielding Federico Chiesa as a striker experiment needs to finally come to an end, and how Juventus looked unprepared coming out of the gate against Frosinone on Sunday. Thoughts on Juventus’ tight win over Frosinone. With Adrien Rabiot and Weston McKennie both having to be subbed out injured, Juventus’ midfield is likely to be even more shorthanded than it has been for much of the season. Federico Chiesa’s ongoing struggles have things in an interesting spot. Thu, 22 Feb 2024 - 212 - The Old Lady Speaks, Episode 209: Juventus’ month of February has only gotten worse
Juventus’ horrid run in the month February rolled on this past Saturday, as their winless streak extended to four games with another draw against a relegation battler in Hellas Verona. On Episode 209 of The Old Lady Speaks Podcast, we discuss: Takeaways from Juventus’ loss to Hellas Verona — including how Andrea Cambiaso continues to be a bright spot and a spark amid the recent darkness, and how Max Allegri’s tinkering in the second half again left us scratching our heads. Things are bad. Very bad. So what the heck has happened to Juventus? If Juventus’ struggles appear to be mental more than physical, where does the solution come from? Is there even a solution? Twitter questions — including general foul moods because of Juventus, the perma-struggles of Filip Kostic along the left wing, if the Arek Milik red card against Empoli has created a butterfly effect of sorts, the eight-minute cameo of Kenan Yildiz, Dusan Vlahovic and Federico Chiesa all on the field at once, and thoughts on Carlos Alcaraz’s first real chunk of playing time as a Juventus player. Mon, 19 Feb 2024 - 211 - The Old Lady Speaks, Episode 208: Juventus are in the midst of a February to forget
Max Allegri’s squad dropped points for the third straight game, with a 1-0 loss to relegation battler Udinese putting salt in the wound following last week’s Derby d’Italia loss to Inter that put a serious dent in Juventus’ Scudetto hopes. On Episode 208 of The Old Lady Speaks Podcast, we discuss: Takeaways from the week that was — including why (AGAIN) is Alex Sandro still playing meaningful minutes for Juventus this season, and how things were very much an “odd” tactical setup against Udinese because of Federico Chiesa and others. So, yeah ... about that performance against Udinese. Has much have the last three games just absolutely killed Juventus’ mojo from basically all of January when they were winning and winning with plenty of room to spare? How much of these last three games — and especially the loss to Udinese — really on Max Allegri? Oh, and by the way, even though Juventus’ status in the top four is still pretty comfortable, their advantage over third-place AC Milan is now down to a single point. Not great! Twitter questions — including when the #AllegriOut movement will start trending again, what a sad San Francisco 49ers fan (namely Danny) who also roots for Juventus is supposed to do after a rough couple of days, if Juventus do think of replacing Max Allegri next season who it should be, and what a Valentines Day-themed topic on the pod may look like. Thu, 08 Feb 2024 - 209 - The Old Lady Speaks, Episode 206: Juve can’t keep pace with Inter at San Siro
Rather than busting the Serie A title race wide open, Juventus couldn’t muster much at the San Siro on Sunday night, falling to league leaders Inter, who now have a four-point lead and a game in hand heading into the final 15 games of the season. On Episode 206 of The Old Lady Speaks Podcast, we discuss: Takeaways — including how Andrea Cambiaso “chose” to have one of his worst games of the season against Inter on Sunday, how the Scudetto race (as of now) appears to be over, and how the battle of the center backs and out on the wings proved to be vital. So, yeah. About that Juventus performance against Inter... Did Max Allegri get his tactics wrong? Or was the bad performance against Inter simply down to the players imply playing poorly? OR BOTH?! Social media questions — including why Juve couldn’t keep up with Inter, what could change in the starting lineup as the same players continue to struggle, if it’s time to simply consider changing to a back four, and if the big run of a goal scoring numbers in January was a flash in the pan or will Allegri go back to his conservative ways? Thu, 01 Feb 2024 - 207 - The Old Lady Speaks, Episode 204: Down a man, Juve can’t hold on vs. Empoli
After a blistering run in January, Juve weren’t able to finish the month with another convincing win — or any sort of win for that matter, as Arek Milik getting sent off highlighted a disappointing night at the Allianz Stadium against Empoli. On Episode 204 of The Old Lady Speaks Podcast, we discuss: Takeaways from the game that was — including why are we starting Alex Sandro in the year of 2024, how Juventus were simply unlucky after going down a man less than 20 minutes in, and just how razor thin the margins became once Arek Milik got sent off. Are we playing the blame game because of how things went on Saturday? Other thoughts on Juventus’ 1-1 draw with Empoli. Why has Fabio Miretti suddenly become such a polarizing player? Twitter questions — including why a loan spell looks more and more of the way to go when it comes to Miretti next season, and what we think will be the point total needed to win Serie A this year. Thu, 25 Jan 2024 - 205 - The Old Lady Speaks, Episode 202: More wins, more goals as Juve move into first
Juventus’ big start to 2024 continues to roll on, as two more wins over teams in the bottom half of the Serie A allowed the Bianconeri to jump over Inter and into first place in the table. On Episode 202 of The Old Lady Speaks Podcast, we discuss: Takeaways from the week that was — including how this is becoming the moment of strikers and how many goals Juventus are scoring in such a short time period, how cool it is to see Dusan Vlahovic playing the way he is right now, and how refreshing it has been over the last month to not have to sweat out so many close wins every single week. Juventus’ high-scoring ways only continued in wins over Sassuolo and Lecce. The Dusan Vlahovic and Kenan Yildiz striker partnership continues to work quite well. Yildiz, especially, has brought something different — and vitally important — to the table even when he hasn’t had the best of games last week. Twitter questions — including if there is ever a Federico Bernardeschi return to Juve where would he fit into the squad, what the biggest factor in making Juventus into a genuine Scudetto contender has been this season, and would a loan move away from Juventus this season been the best for Fabio Miretti. Thu, 18 Jan 2024 - 203 - The Old Lady Speaks, Episode 200: Juve cruise into Coppa Italia semis as the winter mercato heats up
In a week in which Juventus rolled to another blowout win in the Coppa Italia, we also saw the transfer rumor mill pick up plenty of steam when it comes to one likely deal and a rumor that came completely out of nowhere. On Episode 200 (!!!) of The Old Lady Speaks Podcast, we discuss: Takeaways from the week that was — including thankfully Fabio Miretti is having a well-timed uptick in form in recent weeks, how Manuel Locatelli has been really (like really, really) good lately, and how Coppa Italia Juventus is the best team in Europe. So, how about that demolition win over Frosinone that propelled Juve into the Coppa Italia semifinals? Transfer thoughts! Juventus have been linked with ... Jordan Henderson?! Tiago Djaló is also pretty much all set to sign with Juve in the near future. Twitter questions — including if there’s really any way Juventus actually sign Jordan Henderson, why Serie A referees are so bad, and if there’s any possibility of a front three of Dusan Vlahovic, Federico Chiesa and Kenan Yildiz in the near future. Thu, 11 Jan 2024 - 201 - The Old Lady Speaks, Episode 198: Juventus sweep their week full of Salernitana
Juventus began the new year with a pair of games against Salernitana, a team that has been stuck at the bottom of the league table for weeks now. The Bianconeri got a pair of wins in the Coppa Italia and Serie A, although they came in very different kinds of ways. On Episode 198 of The Old Lady Speaks Podcast, we discuss: Takeaways from the two wins over Salernitana — including how Max Allegri made some really good substitutions in the second half on Sunday night, how Federico Gatti is going through a bit of a mini-slump right now, and it’s time for Samuel Iling-Junior to start to get more ... starts. Thoughts on the week that was against Salernitana. We are officially at the midway point of the 2023-24 season. So, how we feeling? Twitter questions — including just how important to this Juventus team Andrea Cambiaso has quickly become, and what could Vlahovic’s goal against Salernitana on Sunday mean if Juve go on to win the Scudetto this season. Mon, 08 Jan 2024 - 200 - The Old Lady Speaks, Episode 197: Juventus close out 2023 with a big win over Roma
Juventus closed out the 2023 calendar year in strong fashion, beating Roma with a stout defensive effort and an Adrien Rabiot goal just two minutes into the second half to claim the 1-0 win. On Episode 197 of The Old Lady Speaks Podcast, we discuss: Takeaways from Juventus’ win over Roma on Saturday — including how Dusan Vlahovic is starting to truly show signs of improvement, how Vlahovic really did look like he’s playing with a lot of confidence, and how good (and refreshing) Juve’s form at the Allianz Stadium has been this season. So, how about that Juventus performance against Roma? Kenan Yildiz was pretty good in his second career start, too! After a great assist to Adrien Rabiot and a quality performance overall, is Dusan Vlahovic starting to turn a corner when it comes to his level of play? Social media questions — including Vlahovic’s performance against Roma being one of the best from him this season, if Max Allegri should keep the faith with Timothy Weah and how that could impact Andrea Cambiaso/Filip Kostic/Samuel Iling-Junior, if it’s still OK to be a bit frustrated with Allegri despite the results, and thoughts on the winter transfer window. Thu, 28 Dec 2023 - 198 - The Old Lady Speaks, Episode 195: Yildiz shines, Vlahovic saves the day vs. Frosinone
Juventus’ newest striker and their most expensive one combined for the goals during Saturday’s lunchtime matinee, giving the Bianconeri three points a couple of days before Christmas. On Episode 195 of The Old Lady Speaks Podcast, we discuss: Takeaways from the win over Frosinone — including how Juventus have done well in utilizing loan deals quite well this season, how Weston McKennie continues to be one of Juventus’ performers since becoming a regular in the squad again, and how Filip Kostic shouldn’t be considered a lock in the starting lineup anymore. Let’s talk Kenan Yildiz! What can Yildiz’s role be going forward the next few weeks even if Federico Chiesa returns quick from his current knee injury. Let’s talk about Dusan Vlahovic, the guy who scored the game-winning goal for Juventus. Social media questions — including a whole slew of how could Max Allegri try and take advantage of Kenan Yildiz being ready to make his mark and if that means a change out of formation/tactics, You can follow us — or send us questions — on Twitter @JuventusNation or on Facebook as well as the Fans First Sports Network @FansFirstSN. Wed, 20 Dec 2023 - 196 - The Old Lady Speaks, Episode 193: Juventus stumble vs. Genoa to end run of Friday fixtures
It was a night to forget at the Marassi, and no matter what Max Allegri said about a precious point being earned his team left a whole lot to be desired against a newly-promoted Genoa side that wasn’t anything special on the night. Takeaways from the trip to Genoa — including how there’s really no easy games for Juventus no matter what we think or what things say on paper, and how there looks like there’s a complete lack of a Plan B from Max Allegri and Juventus outside of trying to win 1-0. So, about that performance against Genoa. Yeah, not great. Old problems came back to haunt Juventus after a string of performances where scoring one goal ended up being enough. Serie A referees suck and this was the latest example of that. Social media question of the day: If the reported frustration about playing time from Kenan Yildiz is actually true, what’s a possible way to get him into the lineup more often? Wed, 13 Dec 2023 - 194 - The Old Lady Speaks, Episode 191: Juventus keep things rolling, beat Napoli
A game that probably shouldn’t have ended 1-0 actually did end up with a 1-0 scoreline, as Juventus extended their unbeaten run to 10 games and kept pace with first-place Inter yet again. On Episode 191 of The Old Lady Speaks Podcast, we discuss: Takeaways from Juventus’ win over Napoli — including how this team continues to win games this season that they were losing last season, how Juve players are doing the ugly stuff well (in a good kind of way) to continue to get wins, and what kind of interesting approach Juve took to try and keep Khvicha Kvaratskhelia under wraps. Juventus’ win over Napoli was a weird game because both teams should have combined for more than one goal. Yet, there goes Juve in the end winning 1-0 again. Andrea Cambiaso did some good things! This is pretty good to see. For a team that continues to hammer home that finishing in the top four continues to be the No. 1 priority, there’s suddenly becoming a lot of room between Juve and fifth place. Twitter questions — including what Dusan Vlahovic needs to get his goal scoring form going again, if it’s time to admit that the demands to have Max Allegri leave over the summer were maybe wrong, and what should Juve do with a struggling Filip Kostic. Sun, 10 Dec 2023 - 193 - The Old Lady Speaks, Episode 190: Juve face big a December test vs. Napoli
Juventus started the final month of 2023 with a win against Monza, but now things will be taken up a notch or two as defending champion Napoli roll into Turin for another big test for Max Allegri and company. On Episode 190 of The Old Lady Speaks Podcast, we discuss: Juventus vs. Napoli — very important! Napoli’s got a new manager and things so far have been ... a bit mixd. One thing that’s still there for Napoli — a very dangerous trident that has been kept intact through the managerial change earlier this season. Another win in a big game will help Juventus’ potential title chase. Players to keep an eye on when Juventus faces Napoli in Turin on Friday night. Wed, 06 Dec 2023 - 192 - The Old Lady Speaks, Episode 189: Juve avoid disaster with a miracle vs. Monza
Just when it looked like Juventus was going to drop points for just the third time this season, Federico Gatti’s stoppage-time winner allowed the Bianconeri to jump back in front once and for all and beat Monza. On Episode 189 of The Old Lady Speaks Podcast, we discuss: Takeaways from Juventus’ win over Monza — including how the interchanging between Andrea Cambiaso and Weston McKennie on the right wing is becoming more and more of a thing, and how Contract Year Rabiot has reappeared in a game in which he was needed. Juventus’ win over Monza was quite the roller coaster ride in stoppage time. Can Juventus continue to win like how Max Allegri wants to play? Should Dusan Vlahovic continue to be Juve’s No. 1 penalty kick taker? Or, better yet, do Juve have another real option amongst their regular starters to take penalties? Twitter questions — including how good was Adrien Rabiot’s response to Roberto Gagliardini on Instagram after Juve’s stoppage-time win, and do we think Juventus can win the Scudetto. Sun, 03 Dec 2023 - 191 - The Old Lady Speaks, Episode 188: It’s all square in the Derby d’Italia
Juventus couldn’t record another win coming out of an international break this season, but were able to at the very least keep the distance between first and second place in Serie A just as it was before kickoff against Inter this past weekend. On Episode 188 of The Old Lady Speaks Podcast, we discuss: Takeaways from the game that was — including how we got to see Hans Nicolussi Caviglia make his first career Juve start in one of the toughest assignments there is, how the Derby d’Italia was a game of two Serbs for two very different ways, and how nice it was to hear the Allianz Stadium be loud again in a big game. Thoughts on Juventus’ 1-1 draw against Inter in the first Derby d’Italia of the season. Things can be boiled down to this after Inter’s equalizer: the appetite for risk that Max Allegri has no matter who’s available for selection. Twitter questions — including why does Max Allegri continue to go back to Alex Sandro despite the obvious fact that he is completely washed, and why aren’t more people giving Allegri his due for doing a good job with a limited squad so far this season. Mon, 27 Nov 2023 - 190 - The Old Lady Speaks, Episode 187: The Derby d’Italia is Juventus’ biggest test yet
The post-international break slate of games to close out the 2023 calendar year is going to start with a banger this weekend, as it’s first-place Inter against second-place Juventus at the Allianz Stadium in Turin on Sunday night. On Episode 187 of The Old Lady Speaks Podcast, we discuss: So, the Derby d’Italia is this weekend. Let’s check out who is likely not playing for Juventus ... oh, that’s not good. There are injuries, but this is still Juventus’ chance to head into December as the Serie A leaders. Inter are very good (even though they are forever frauds), so this is Juventus’ best opportunity yet to show whether or not they are actually Scudetto challengers this season. Mon, 20 Nov 2023 - 188 - The Old Lady Speaks, Episode 185: Juventus beat Cagliari to extend winning run
The defenders did it all for Juventus in the final game before the November international break, as the Bianconeri will head into the Derby d’Italia on a five-game winning streak after Saturday’s win over Cagliari and the chance to take first place over with a win over Inter. On Episode 185 of The Old Lady Speaks Podcast, we discuss: Juventus’ defense continues to do it all for the team ... including scoring goals against Cagliari, and through injuries and suspensions the depth in the midfield is really being tested and giving Max Allegri some interesting selection choices. Juve’s performance against Cagliari wasn’t great, but like so many times this season it just got the job done. This is the kind of game that Juventus dropped points in a good amount of the time a season ago. This season, thankfully, they’re winning those same types of games. Hey, everybody ... Bremer is really freakin’ good. Twitter/social media questions — including who can be added to help Juve’s currently quiet attack, could Juventus switch to a 4-3-3 and make it work, and what’s up with Dusan Vlahovic right now. Mon, 13 Nov 2023 - 187 - The Old Lady Speaks, Episode 184: It’s time to have a chat about Matias Soulé
Juventus sent the young Argentine on loan with the hope of him taking advantage of newfound consistent playing time at Frosinone. He’s done just that — and then some. Therefore, there’s really just one thing — or, in this case, person — we talk during this midweek episode. And that is the impressive as all hell season that Soulé is in the midst of these days. Thu, 09 Nov 2023 - 186 - The Old Lady Speaks, Episode 183: Juventus get (very) defensive to beat Fiorentina
Juventus’ first game of November proved to be one in which Max Allegri had about as defensive as a game plan as he’s had all season, as the Bianconeri recorded their third straight 1-0 win. On Episode 183 of The Old Lady Speaks Podcast, we discuss: Takeaways from Juventus’ win over Fiorentina — including how much of a pain in the ass Juve must be to be playing against right now, how the counting stats don’t tell the story about how well Moise Kean is playing of late, and just how ineffective all of those Fiorentina’s crosses ended up being. So, about that performance against Fiorentina ... The defense was good! The rest of the deal? Maybe not so much. But hey, Bremer was an absolute beast! So was Daniele Rugani! In a game in which the defense was the star of the show, Juventus could have maybe been a little bit more expansive when it came to their attempts to go forward ... right? Twitter questions — including when Juve’s last truly ugly win was, were we secretly smiling like Max Allegri was as Juve’s defense shut Fiorentina down, and is there even the smallest of chances that Arthur wears bianconero again. With Juventus set to travel to Florence to face Fiorentina this weekend, we brought in an old friend to give us the scoop on all things Viola and how things have gone for Vincenzo Italiano’s squad so far this season. On Episode 182 of The Old Lady Speaks Podcast, we discuss: Hey, it’s our old buddy Tito from Viola Nation to talk Fiorentina! How have things gone for Fiorentina as of late heading into this weekend’s matchup at the Franchi? What has this season been like on the whole for Fiorentina? How has this season gone for the infamous Arthur Melo since he traded in Juventus for Fiorentina this past summer? How is Year 3 for Vincenzo Italiano going knowing that there’s been another summer of important players coming and going? Thoughts on this weekend’s matchup and how we think things might go. Thu, 02 Nov 2023 - 184 - The Old Lady Speaks, Episode 181: Juventus leave it VERY, VERY late vs. Hellas Verona
A frustrating night thanks to VAR and other ineffectiveness in front of the Hellas Verona goal ended with a bang thanks to Andrea Cambiaso’s 97th-minute winner that took Juventus (momentarily) top of the table this weekend. On Episode 181 of The Old Lady Speaks Podcast, we discuss: Takeaways from the week that was — if you don’t succeed after 96 minutes and 20-something shots against Hellas Verona then persevere some more and get the win, and the refereeing in Juve-Verona was ... less than ideal — and that’s probably being nice about it. Ooof maddone ... that refereeing! Juventus got a second straight 1-0 win in as many weekends, this time against Hellas Verona, but in a very different kind of way than they did a week ago against Milan. It wasn’t all bad Saturday night — Juventus played quite alright! What the heck has happened to Samuel Iling-Junior’s playing time? Twitter questions — including a handful regarding Filip Kostic and whether Moise Kean deserves a starting spot even as Federico Chiesa and Dusan Vlahovic get back to full fitness. Mon, 30 Oct 2023 - 183 - The Old Lady Speaks, Episode 180: As Juve’s set to face Hellas Verona, where do things stand?
The opposition this weekend is not very good at all and should mean Juventus are a heavy favorite, but we’ve already seen Max Allegri squad fall into the trap once this season ... On Episode 180 of The Old Lady Speaks Podcast, we discuss: After last weekend’s big win over AC Milan, Juventus return home to face a Hellas Verona team that hasn’t won in nearly two months. That’s not good — but also the makings of a total trap for Juve after the highs of victory at San Siro. So, we’re basically a quarter of the way into the season. That means we ask: Where do you stand on Juventus’ 2023-24 season to date? Players who we are going to be keeping an eye on when Juventus face Hellas Verona on Saturday night. Thu, 26 Oct 2023 - 182 - The Old Lady Speaks, Episode 179: Manuel Locatelli does to Milan as he once did to Juventus
Exactly seven years ago to the day, Locatelli scored a long-range shot to give his current team a win. The first time it was for Milan against Juventus, but this time the script was flipped. On Episode 179 of The Old Lady Speaks Podcast, we discuss: Takeaways from Juventus’ win over AC Milan — including how this was one of the most Moise Kean games that ever Moise Kean’d over the last few years, how it’s now pretty official that Juventus and Max Allegri have gone back to their old ways of playing with a low block and being less proactive than they were to begin the 2023-24, and how we need to slow our collective role about Juve being Scudetto contenders. So, how about that win over Milan at San Siro? Max Allegri is still doing Max Allegri things — which means the more progressive and “modern” tactics that Juve used the first few games of the 2023-24 season are gone. A closing question: How about Dean Huijsen?! Twitter questions — including how much of Juventus’ win over Milan had to do with luck and how much did it have to do with them being a half-decent team, why the heck was Moise Kean subbed out when he was, and is January a good time to go back in for Domenico Berardi knowing Juve’s continued lack of creativity. Mon, 23 Oct 2023 - 181 - The Old Lady Speaks, Episode 178: After another tumultuous break, Juventus returns with a big-time test
It has been another international break in which there wasn’t much relaxing done around the Juventus offices at Continassa, and it’s not like things appear to be slowing down as the Bianconeri return to the field against one of their biggest rivals on Sunday. On Episode 178 of The Old Lady Speaks Podcast, we discuss: Boy, it sure was another rough international break, huh? As of this recording, some of Juventus’ most important players were major injury doubts to face Milan on Sunday night. That’s on top of missing Paul Pogba and Nicolo Fagioli due to their respective off-field matters. However, it’s not like Milan are going to be at full strength, either — so there’s that. All of this seems like it could make for an interesting night at the San Siro this weekend. Players to keep an eye on when Juventus faces Milan on Sunday night in a big-time test right out of the international break for Max Allegri’s squad. Thu, 19 Oct 2023 - 180 - The Old Lady Speaks, Episode 177: Nicolo Fagioli has been doing some betting
For the second straight international break, Juventus has been involved in quite the off-field drama that looks to have a big-time impact on what’s to come on the field. On Episode 177 of The Old Lady Speaks Podcast, we discuss: The one takeaway from the first week of the October international break — we are so very tired of all of this and just want to talk about games and only games. To cheer things up, Sergio has some very exciting personal news to share! OK, then back to the not-so-good news: Nicolo Fagioli was the first name to be involved in Italy’s growing gambling scandal and things aren’t looking so good for the young midfielder. Could there be some sort of plea deal for Fagioli on the table that would see him with a reduced suspension? The Italian media thinks so. We must remember that as much as it hurts to lose a talent like Fagioli on the field, this is very much a young man who is dealing with a serious problem off the field. There is very much a human element to all of this and that can’t be forgotten. Twitter questions — including what’s the potential of another Adrien Rabiot contract extension considering Juve’s midfield is now incredibly shorthanded, and what could Weston McKennie’s role be now that one of Juventus’ RCM options in Fagioli is looking at a suspension at some point soon. Mon, 16 Oct 2023 - 179 - The Old Lady Speaks, Episode 176: Talkin’ Juve-Torino, Paul Pogba and finances, oh my!
A busy Friday was not exactly the best lead-in to the first Turin derby of the season, but Juventus was able to get a win over Torino to go into the October international break on a positive note. On Episode 176 of The Old Lady Speaks Podcast, we discuss: Takeaways from the week that was — including how Max Allegri’s experiment of Fabio Miretti playing as a seconda punta-ish kind of player probably needs to come to an end, and how Juve’s financial numbers (and massive amount of losses) over the last couple the years continue to boggle the mind. The Turin derby was once again won by Juventus. Your thoughts? Max Allegri can be a stubborn man, but he made the right call at the right time with the introduction of Arek Milik to begin the second half. Filip Kostic — he back?! The Paul Pogba B sample came back just as positive as the A sample and his doping suspension rolls on with a long-term ban looking all the more likely. Mon, 09 Oct 2023 - 178 - The Old Lady Speaks, Episode 175: It’s Derby della Mole time for Juventus
After a week in which Juventus’ performance resembled those of the previous two years, the Bianconeri head into the final game before the October international break looking to pick up three points against cross-town rival Torino. On Episode 175 of The Old Lady Speaks Podcast, we discuss: It’s Turin derby time! Throw out the form guide! As much as we joke, the Derby della Mole has been hard to predict over the years despite Juventus’ overwhelming success over city rivals Torino. Juventus are coming into Saturday’s derby not exactly on the best run of form the last couple of weeks. The same can be said about Torino, who have struggled quite a bit to consistently score goals so far this season. Some players we’re going to be keeping an eye on as Juventus host Torino this weekend. Thu, 05 Oct 2023 - 177 - The Old Lady Speaks, Episode 174: Juventus look to be regressing to the mean
The bright start to the 2023-24 season might be fading as Max Allegri looks to be reverting back to his old ways of trying to grind out results rather than sticking with the new tactics we’ve seen in Juventus’ best performances of the new campaign. On Episode 174 of The Old Lady Speaks Podcast, we discuss: Takeaways from the week that was — including how this was a week and a pair of games where Juventus regressed back to the mean and how Max Allegri’s response on a tactical basis to the Sassuolo loss has been the very predictable one, which means going back to how things looked the last couple of years. The win over Lecce and the draw with Atalanta had very common themes even though they were different results. We are worried that Max Allegri is going back to his old ways, everybody. So what does that mean for Juventus going forward knowing that corto muso hasn’t gone all that well the last couple of years on the whole? How much did not having Dusan Vlahovic and Arek Milik play into Allegri’s decision to play for a draw rather than push for a win as Sunday’s game went on? Twitter questions — including patience with young players, the potential for Nicolo Fagioli and Fabio Miretti actually playing at the same time, and how Juventus’ manager and management have tried to tamper expectations regarding any potential Scudetto push. Mon, 02 Oct 2023 - 176 - The Old Lady Speaks, Episode 173: Juve suffer ‘freak loss’ against Sassuolo
The self-inflicted wounds were taken to an extreme Saturday, with game-changing mistakes being stacked up on top of one another in Juventus’ first loss of the 2023-24 season. On Episode 173 of The Old Lady Speaks Podcast, we discuss: Takeaways from the week that was — including how Juventus’ loss to Sassuolo was a comedy of errors and how it was actually kinda interesting, how this was a little like the Bologna game in which Juve went out and tried to do what they have been doing even amidst the struggle, and how we are waiting to see what Max Allegri’s next move is. So, yeah. About Juventus’ 4-2 loss to Sassuolo. Those mistakes by Wojciech Szczesny ... what happened there? So, where does Juventus go from here knowing big games are fast approaching? Social media questions — including if it’s truly time for Juventus to start looking for a long-term replacement for Wojciech Szczesny, how much criticism/credit does Max Allegri deserve so far this season, is there any realistic hope that Juve can find a backup to Manuel Locatelli during the winter transfer window, if Juve can survive with three at the back, and if it’s fair to blame Federico Gatti for as much most have considering he’s still relatively young. Mon, 25 Sep 2023 - 175 - The Old Lady Speaks, Episode 172: Can Juve avoid the trap against Sassuolo?
Coming off one of their best performances of Max Allegri’s second stint in Turin, Juve head back out on the road to Sassuolo in what is certainly a fixture that has a bunch of potential for a letdown kind of game this weekend. On Episode 172 of The Old Lady Speaks Podcast, we discuss: Last Saturday against Lazio was quite the enjoyable outing at the Allianz Stadium. Now that Juve is heading back out on the road to Sassuolo, what do they have to do to keep the good times going? Sassuolo have struggled this season. Their schedule has been relatively tough, too. Does that mean this has the makings of a trap game for Max Allegri and Juventus? So, what does Juve need to do to ensure that it doesn’t become a trap game? (Besides, you know, go out and win the game in the simplest of terms.) Players we’re keeping an eye on as Juve head to Sassuolo — including somebody who called the Mapei Stadium his home stadium for a couple of years before moving to Turin. Thu, 21 Sep 2023 - 174 - The Old Lady Speaks, Episode 171: Juventus pass their Lazio test with flying colors
After a week filled with more off-field drama and uncertainty, Juventus delivered their best performance of the season against a Lazio side that went into the international break with a win over the reigning champs. On Episode 171 of The Old Lady Speaks Podcast, we discuss: Takeaways from the week that was — including Juve’s international break was chaotic and the off-field issues could have distracted the team again ... but it didn’t, how possession continues to be a funny thing like it was against Lazio, and how there is an attitude difference in this season’s Juventus team and it’s most on display in goal celebrations. So, that win over Lazio ... pretty good! How significant of a chance — for the better! — this season has been so far and how Juve are getting it done on both ends of the field through their first four games. Not everything is totally great for Juventus right now, with Paul Pogba being provisionally suspended for failing a doping test and former captain Leonardo Bonucci reportedly suing the club for damages after being frozen out of the squad this summer. Social media question of the episode: Considering there were so many choices, who was the man of the match against Lazio? Mon, 18 Sep 2023 - 173 - The Old Lady Speaks, Episode 170: Juve face first big test of the season vs. Lazio
Juventus’ international break has been suddenly dominated by off-field issues, but their first game in two weeks sees a direct rival for the top four roll into Turin this weekend. **NOTE: This episode was recorded before the news of Paul Pogba failing a doping test and Leonardo Bonucci taking legal action against Juventus due to being frozen out of the squad.** On Episode 170 of The Old Lady Speaks Podcast, we discuss: Juventus are back from the international break. Isn’t that exciting?! Juve does have a potentially big injury concern involving Federico Chiesa, who had to leave Italy camp and head back to Turin late last week due to reported muscle fatigue. Lazio has had an interesting start to the season — which means trying to predict which version of Maurizio Sarri’s team that will show up Saturday is awfully tough. Juve have, at least recently, had success against Lazio, but their new tactics might be a little bit different from how they’ve beaten Sarri’s side in the past. Thu, 14 Sep 2023 - 172 - The Old Lady Speaks, Episode 169: Grading Juventus’ summer transfer window
The were plenty of players leaving compared to players arriving, as we take a look at how Juve’s Cristiano Giuntoli-led front office did during its first summer mercato. On Episode 169 (nice) of The Old Lady Speaks Podcast, we discuss: How would we grade Juventus’ summer mercato? Do we agree with how the BWRAO community rated Juventus’ summer mercato? How are we feeling about the first few months of the Cristiano Giuntoli era at Juventus? Out of all the young players who left on loan (not named Nicolo Rovella), who are you going to be paying attention to the most? And do they probably play for Frosinone? Twitter question of the week — what will need to happen for Juve to both challenge for the top four in Serie A and potentially challenge for the Scudetto this season? Mon, 11 Sep 2023 - 171 - The Old Lady Speaks, Episode 168: Juve don’t throw away more points vs. Empoli
The visit to Empoli in September went a little bit better than it did back in the spring, with Danilo and Federico Chiesa ensuring that Juventus went into the first international break of the 2023-24 season with a victory. On Episode 168 of The Old Lady Speaks Podcast, we discuss: Takeaways from the week that was — including how Paul Pogba is back to being injured, it was nice to see Filip Kostic back in the starting lineup against Empoli after some transfer rumor-filled final days of the summer window, and how Weston McKennie starting at wingback isn’t exactly the greatest thing. The performance against Empoli wasn’t great and Juve certainly should have been Did Juventus ever lose control of the game against Empoli despite the fact that they were holding onto a slim 1-0 lead? Thoughts on Dusan Vlahovic’s up and down kind of performance and his season as a whole so far. Twitter question for the week: Assuming health, what would Juventus’ best midfield three be? Tue, 05 Sep 2023 - 170 - The Old Lady Speaks, Episode 167: Which Juve will show up against Empoli?
This weekend, Juventus are heading back to a place where one of last season’s most forgettable nights took place, with a visit to Empoli being a complete letdown on and off the field. On Episode 167 of The Old Lady Speaks Podcast, we discuss: We revisit the last time Juventus played on the road against Empoli. ... just kidding. We don’t want to bring up those bad memories. Juve’s coming off a disappointing performance in their home opener against Bologna. Now, against a struggling Empoli side, we await to see if it’s more of Matchday 1 or Matchday 2 showing in the final game before the international break. Thu, 31 Aug 2023 - 169 - The Old Lady Speaks, Episode 166: Juve can’t make it two wins in two games to open the season
Juventus’ second game of the season didn’t come anywhere close to the first, with the Bianconeri struggling for much of the first half and having to claw back to get a point against Bologna. On Episode 166 of The Old Lady Speaks Podcast, we discuss: Takeaways from this weekend’s game — including why Juventus’ tying goal against Bologna was a good example of why it’s always handy to have a Plan B (in this case being Samuel Iling-Junior), and howe we got another example of why Alex Sandro is not good enough to get regular minutes at Juventus anymore (again). The performance in the first half by Juventus was basically the complete opposite of what we saw from Juve’s first-half performance against Udinese seven days earlier. The second half was better from Juventus ... but that’s only because you couldn’t have gotten much worse than what we saw in the second 45 minutes. Thoughts on Paul Pogba’s season debut knowing that these kinds of appearances can be relatively short-lived based on how much time he’s missed due to injury the past few years. Twitter questions — including what’s up with Adrien Rabiot’s passing, why the Chiesa/Cambiaso combo wasn’t clicking against Bologna and why Max Allegri keeps trotting Alex Sandro out there when he’s far past his prime as a player. Mon, 28 Aug 2023 - 168 - The Old Lady Speaks, Episode 165: Can Juve build off their season-opening win?
There were a lot of good things that happened last weekend in Udine, and the hope is that Juventus can keep the good things going to begin the 2023-24 season as the setting shifts to the Allianz Stadium in Turin. On Episode 165 of The Old Lady Speaks Podcast, we discuss: That first game of the season sure was fun, wasn’t it? Well, now it’s time for Juventus’ home opener against another mid-table side in the form of Bologna that may or may not be more challenging than Udinese was. What will Juve have to do to playing anywhere close to how they did in the season-opening win over Udinese last weekend? Thu, 24 Aug 2023 - 167 - The Old Lady Speaks, Episode 164: Juventus open their season with a bang
It was hard to predict what kind of Juve team was going to show up at the Friuli on Sunday night. But, thanks to a first-half blitz, Juventus stormed to a season-opening win that saw a whole lot of good things happen along the way. On Episode 164 of The Old Lady Speaks Podcast, we discuss: Takeaways — that there’s a negative amongst the positives and that’s Juve’s defense against Udinese, how Andrea Cambiaso made quite the first (official) impression in his Juve debut, and how Max Allegri used Cambiaso’s ability to make underlapping movements to his team’s advantage. That first-half performance from Juventus, though ... that was good. That second-half performance from Juventus ... wasn’t great, but when it’s 80-something degrees out and you’re up 3-0, easing off the throttle is a little more forgivable. The two stars of the show were easy to figure out: Federico Chiesa and Andrea Cambiaso, two players who combined quite well on the left wing. Dusan Vlahovic played pretty well, too, by the way. Twitter questions — why do so many Juve fans seem to dislike Weston McKennie, if Federico Chiesa would be better playing out wide or closer to Dusan Vlahovic in Max Allegri’s current setup, and if Chiesa and Vlahovic both stay and things click ... does that make Juventus a serious Scudetto challenger? Mon, 21 Aug 2023 - 166 - The Old Lady Speaks, Episode 163: The 2023-24 Season Preview Extravaganza!
The start of the 2023-24 Serie A season is nearly upon us, and it just so happens that Juventus’ need for an influx of money has also kicked into gear as the middle of August has arrived. On this week’s episode of The Old Lady Speaks Podcast, we discuss: A podcast announcement — and it’s good news, not bad news. Before we get to the season afoot, there’s plenty of transfer happenings going on. The biggest of which involves the upcoming departure of midfielder Nicolo Rovella, somebody who many of us did not expect to be leaving the club this summer after his positive loan spell at Monza a year ago. Somebody who also could find themselves suddenly leaving Juventus before the end of the summer transfer window? Filip Kostic. To the season preview portion of things: What is Juventus’ biggest goal for this season and why is it 100% trying to get back into the top four in Serie A? Who will be the players who need to come up big time if Juventus wants to have any shot at making the top four this season? Scoring goals was an issue all season long for a Juventus team that averaged less than 1 1⁄2 goals a game. So, with that said, how many more goals will Juve need to score to have a chance at the top four? So, with all that being said, does Juve get back into the top four this season? Twitter questions — including what the feelings toward Max Allegri be if Juve surpass our current expectations this season, what do realistic valuations of Dusan Vlahovic and Romelu Lukaku look like in our eyes after the proposed swap deal fell through, and what’s our preferred starting lineup if no more moves were made the rest of the summer transfer window. Mon, 14 Aug 2023 - 165 - The Old Lady Speaks, Episode 162: Juve return from U.S. tour as transfer window centers around Lukaku, Vlahovic
Max Allegri’s squad picked up a surprising win over Real Madrid to close out play in the States, but it’s what’s going on off the field on the transfer rumor mill that is what has people most interested in what’s to come. On this week’s episode of The Old Lady Speaks Podcast, we discuss: Our boy is back! Our favorite Dutchman, Chuks, is back! Juventus’ United States tour is now a thing of the past, and the way they wrapped things up against Real Madrid in Florida was a pleasant surprise even if it was a friendly. Timothy Weah was one of the standout performers during the preseason tour, but who else caught our eyes with how they played in the United States? (It was two games, but still!) The transfer rumor mill is starting to heat up again, with talk of a swap deal between Juventus and Chelsea that involves Dusan Vlahovic and Romelu Lukaku dominating the conversation these days. Of course, Juventus’ inability to sell players is still very much preventing much of anything signing-wise from happening, too. One of the best Juventus players to ever play in Turin, goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon, retired late last week at the age of 45 years old. That’s right, the GOAT of goalkeepers played into his mid-40s in a professional career that spanned nearly three decades. Twitter (X?) questions — including Andrea Cambiaso’s role now that it looks like he’s sticking around for the 2023-24 season and what our impressions of Dean Huijsen have been during the preseason friendlies. Mon, 07 Aug 2023 - 164 - The Old Lady Speaks, Episode 161: Juventus are officially out of Europe this year
The expected verdict by UEFA has come down and the schedule for the 2023-24 season will be a lot less busy than it has been in years. Is this a good thing? A bad thing? A thing in which the expected nature makes us feel totally indifferent about it all? On this week’s episode of The Old Lady Speaks Podcast, we discuss: The UEFA decision that everybody was expecting officially came down late last week, with Juventus banned from participating in the Europa Conference League this coming season. Because we all expected this, is this actually a big deal? The financial impact isn’t as big as it would have been if this was a ban from the Champions League, but it’s still Juventus losing out on money during a time in which they very much need as much cash as they can get. But, there won’t be any Thursday-Sunday grind like the Conference League requires — which is good news when it comes to focusing on trying to make the top four in Serie A and getting back into the Champions League. Thoughts on Juventus’ first friendly of the summer against AC Milan. Who stood out against Milan? Who are we looking forward to seeing more of against Real Madrid? (Don’t worry, there’s not a whole lot of overreaction with the first friendly of the summer.) Mon, 31 Jul 2023 - 163 - The Old Lady Speaks, Episode 160: Juve’s U.S. tour gets underway ... sorta
Juventus flew in for their first game of the United States tour and then saw said first game canceled because of Barcelona players being ill. Where to go from here? We take a look. On this week’s episode of The Old Lady Speaks Podcast, we discuss: Juventus’ less-than ideal start to the United States tour — and it wasn’t even their fault! How much does not playing the first friendly of the summer really impact Juventus? Something to worry about: Paul Pogba’s fitness issues are back again. Who we are interested in watching during the final two friendlies of the U.S. tour. (As long as they actually get to play them, of course.) The return of Twitter questions — including if we see a managerial change happening if Max Allegri starts the season in a rough way, why the insistence on waiting for Paul Pogba to be healthy again, what there is to actually be positive about entering the 2023-24 season, and what the whole meaning of life might be. Mon, 24 Jul 2023 - 162 - The Old Lady Speaks, Episode 159: Talking Juve, Women’s World Cup with Adriano Del Monte!
The Old Lady Speaks welcomed a special guest for this episode, as the crew welcomed TV presenter Adriano Del Monte to the pod for a chat about Juventus and the upcoming Women’s World Cup. Amongst the topics we talked with Adriano on Episode 159 of The Old Lady Speaks Podcast: A little background information on his scoopage that Federico Chiesa — and other attacking players — were frustrated toward the end of last season regarding how Juve was playing and how Max Allegri was doing things. Just where he thinks things stand at Juventus right now with the arrival of Cristiano Giuntoli during a summer that seems far from normal. What Juventus need to do both on and off the field to try and get back to contending for the top spot in Serie A. Thoughts on Max Allegri at the midway point of the Allegri 2.0 experience. What it’s been like in Italy during the past year or so as the different Juventus financial investigations have gone on and the greater issues that it has revealed about Serie A. The current leadership void that Juve’s had the last few years. The Italy women are about to start things up at the Women’s World Cup this weekend in New Zealand and what we think they will do in the group stage. What the expectations are like in the Italian squad amongst the players. Who are some Italian players to keep an eye on as the tournament gets underway. Thu, 20 Jul 2023 - 161 - The Old Lady Speaks, Episode 158: Lukaku, Kessie in? Vlahovic, Bonucci out?
Things are getting very, very interesting — and maybe not for the better — on the summer transfer market as the Cristiano Giuntoli era gets underway at Juventus. On this week’s episode of The Old Lady Speaks Podcast, we discuss: So, about those Remulu Lukaku rumors that have Juventus basically replacing Dusan Vlahovic with the big Belgian who may or may not be on the decline of his career. That price Juve are reportedly going to pay if they do indeed sign Lukaku seems like A LOT for somebody who is his age and his struggled for large stretches of the last few years. Of course, there’s the reason why Juventus are pursuing Lukaku: the anticipated sale of Vlahovic, who is being heavily linked with a move to Paris Saint-Germain over the last week. Another player who Juve could be bringing in: midfielder Franck Kessie, who is one of the handful of players Barcelona are wanting to get rid of this summer. Reports out of Italy say that Juve captain Leonardo Bonucci is out of the squad, with the 36-year-old no longer in the club’s plans and is on the transfer market. Mon, 17 Jul 2023 - 160 - The Old Lady Speaks, Episode 157: July brings more transfer rumors — and a Twitter mailbag
Even though Juve hasn’t made many official moves over the last few weeks, the official arrival of the summer transfer window means there’s plenty to talk about. Questions that we answer from the Twitter mailbag that we answer involve: Max Allegri and his use of the 3-5-2. Whether loaning Fabio Miretti out for a season is a good idea. Whether including Nicolo Rovella in any kind of deal is a good idea. (And this was before Lazio agreed to send SMS to Saudi Arabia on a €40 million fee.) The sudden rumors involving Juventus potentially being interested in Romelu Lukaku. What would we like to see Juve do from a formation point of view. Keep, loan, sell — a time to play a game. Mon, 10 Jul 2023 - 159 - The Old Lady Speaks, Episode 156: Juventus finally get their Cristiano
The summer transfer window is officially here, and the same pretty much goes for the guy who is expected to rebuild Juventus into a title contender in Serie A after he was freed from his contract with Napoli. On this week’s episode of the Old Lady Speaks Podcast, we discuss: There’s been a lot of smoke as usual — and that’s before Juve hired somebody to head the sporting area of the front office. The soon-to-be official arrival of Cristiano Giuntoli gives Juventus something that they haven’t had in quite a while — somebody from outside of the Exor bubble and worked his way up the Juve ladder these last few years. Adrien Rabiot has officially signed up for another year and Timothy Weah have officially arrived, so does that mean more 3-5-2 next season? If Juve runs the 3-5-2 back, things aren’t looking good for Federico Chiesa sticking around. How surprised are we that Rabiot ended up taking a one-year contract extension? Twitter questions — including what advice we’d give Cristiano Giuntoli as he starts his new job at Juventus, why are Juve being so stubborn when it comes to the 3-5-2, and if there’s any way for Juve to balance the books without a big-time sale involving somebody like Dusan Vlahovic or Bremer. Mon, 03 Jul 2023 - 158 - The Old Lady Speaks, Episode 155: Juve go for Tim Weah, Adrien Rabiot may be sticking around
Business is starting to pick up for Juventus, as an expected move has become official and another player who previously called Ligue 1 home is set to be moving to Turin. On this week’s episode of The Old Lady Speaks Podcast, we discuss: Max Allegri appears set to turn down even MORE money from the Saudis. Like, A LOT of money from the Saudis. The kind of €30 million a season kind of money. Actual transfer happenings: Juventus are closing in on a deal for Lille and USMNT wide man Timothy Weah, who will arrive in Turin for a price of around €12 million. More transfer happenings: Juventus could see one of their best players from the 2022-23 season, midfielder Adrien Rabiot, stay around a little while longer. It was reported that they are to have the best contract offer on the table — a one-year deal worth €7 million net — after it was widely expected the Frenchman was going to leave on a free transfer this season. A tangent of sorts: This whole Saudi thing is nuts, right? (Yeah, it’s pretty nuts no matter who they end up signing.) Mon, 26 Jun 2023 - 157 - The Old Lady Speaks, Episode 154: Hello and welcome back to Silly Season
The season is over and that means one thing and one thing only — the transfer rumors are flying and the first few lines of Juventus’ summer mercato are starting to be written. On this week’s episode of The Old Lady Speaks Podcast, we discuss: It’s transfer rumor season, everybody! There are so many rumors out there. Does a potential Fabio Miretti loan move make sense? We do actually have an official move that went through: Tottenham bought Dejan Kulusevski outright for €30 million. Juventus have finally been being linked to some fullbacks like Fabiano Parisi and Timothy Castagne (and more!) over the last few days. Thankfully, those seem like strong rumors. No matter who gets linked to Juventus and who is potentially leaving the club this summer, there still very much one thing that is present in Turin: it’s Max Allegri. Could Allegri’s style of play hurt just who wants to join Juve this summer? Juventus are reportedly close to making Arek Milik’s move to Turin a permanent one after re-engaging in talks with Marseille. Mon, 19 Jun 2023 - 156 - The Old Lady Speaks, Episode 153: The 2022-23 Season Review Extravaganza
The 2022-23 season is officially in the rear view mirror, so there’s only one thing to do now — look back on what went right, what didn’t and who Juve’s best and worst were. On this week’s episode of The Old Lady Speaks Podcast, we discuss: Some quick thoughts on the rumors of the Saudi Pro League trying to lure Max Allegri to the Middle East with a massive contract offers. The annual season review! Who is the pick as Juventus’ MVP? Who is the pick as Juventus LVP? Who is the pick as Juventus’ biggest surprise player? Who is the pick as Juventus’ biggest disappointment? As we head into the summer and all of the unknowns that come with it, what is something we are hoping happens during the course of the next few months? Mon, 12 Jun 2023 - 155 - The Old Lady Speaks, Episode 152: The 2022-23 season is finally over
The first weekend of June saw Juventus produce one final win but fall short of getting into the Europa League, ending a season in which a whole lot has happened — and not much of it very good. On this week’s episode of The Old Lady Speaks Podcast, we discuss: Takeaways from the week that was — including how disappointing it was to not see the unwritten tradition of Carlo Pinsoglio end-of-season appearance not happen again, how Federico Chiesa showed some positives to close out the season, and a special shoutout to the Juventus women who beat Roma in the Coppa Italia Femminile. Juventus’ season ended with a whimper rather than some good news and a spot in the Europa League. So, who’s excited about the Conference League? (Until UEFA probably says otherwise.) There is still very much a big managerial elephant in the room to try and decide upon because there’s some big decisions and like big-name player’s futures to figure out. Hiring a sporting director as soon as possible would also help Juventus starting its rebuild this summer. Twitter questions — including one word to describe the 2022-23 season, what the “ideal” offseason would look like this summer, who will be the biggest departure this summer and if we truly believe Max Allegri is staying or going. Mon, 05 Jun 2023 - 154 - The Old Lady Speaks, Episode 151: Juve lose 10 points, then lose to Empoli and Milan
For the first time in over a decade, Juventus won’t be playing Champions League football next season — which just so happened to be the cherry on top of a truly awful week for the Bianconeri on and off the field. This week on The Old Lady Speaks Podcast, we discuss: Takeaways from the week that was — including how Juventus has mentally checked out and how you can’t always tell when a team’s era, no matter the sport, is coming to an end but you can definitely see it with this modern version of Juventus. This team is fried. Just look at how they’ve played against Empoli and Milan — they’re fried. This has been building and Max Allegri wasn’t able to get anything out of his squad when they still had a chance for the Champions League despite the 10-point penalty being handed down right before the loss to Empoli. But, in a way, this is what Juventus needs — to truly rebuild from the bottom up. Just how much patience does this new-look Juventus front office, the ownership at Exor and, maybe more importantly, the fan base have for a true rebuild. But if Juve are going to truly rebuilt, this is the chance to do it with Europe likely out of the picture next season. How the last few weeks (and months) (and years) have continued to sour the Juventus watching experience. Twitter questions — if the season is over yet, if there are any positive lessons to take out of this season despite everything that has happened, why there are reasons to believe the club is going to try and get better soon and how much trust is there in John Elkann to get things right this summer. Mon, 29 May 2023 - 153 - The Old Lady Speaks, Episode 150: Juventus’ Europa League run comes to an end
The last chance Juventus had to win a trophy this season officially disappeared Thursday, with Sevilla beating the Bianconeri 2-1 in the second leg of the Europa League semifinals. What does this all mean? We take a look. On this week’s episode of The Old Lady Speaks Podcast, we discuss: Takeaways from the Europa League semifinal that was — how it’s time for Juan Cuadrado and Juventus to go their separate ways, how it’s time for Angel Di Maria and Juventus to go their separate ways, and how this this loss to Sevilla is the first result in a long time that’s truly hurt because it was so entertaining and felt great to be in a European semifinal again. Thoughts on what went wrong and what went right for Juventus in Thursday’s loss to Sevilla. In a rare state of affairs, there isn’t a whole lot to pin on Max Allegri. Maybe in the first leg, but not the second leg in which Juve’s manager didn’t get much of anything wrong. The positives to come out of Thursday’s loss: the performances of the youngsters like Nicolo Fagioli (before he got injured) and Samuel Iling-Junior, the latter who has truly impressed in recent weeks since getting a major uptick in playing time. What a second straight season without a trophy means for Juventus and the guy who manages the team. Twitter question of the week — where the podcast crew stand on the #AllegriOut train and how things might have changed (if at all) since the start of the 2022-23 season. Sat, 20 May 2023 - 152 - The Old Lady Speaks, Episode 149: Juve has all to play for in the Europa League
Juventus and Sevilla are all square after the opening 90 minutes of the Europa League semifinal. Now things head over to Spain where Juve look to do what Manchester United wasn’t able to do in the quarterfinal round. On this week’s episode of The Old Lady Speaks Podcast, we discuss: Takeaways from the week that was — including how much injuries really do suck, how it feels to be on the other end of a Max Allegri banana peel moment and face a team that comes out guns blazing and then throttles down to protect a lead, and how Max Allegri continues to display how his style of play is very much not conducive to consistent success. Thoughts on Juventus’ draw with Sevilla in the first leg of the Europa League semifinals. What needs to change for Juventus entering Thursday night’s second leg in Seville. Thoughts on Sunday’s win over Cremonese that marked Juve’s third straight victory in Serie A and allowed them to get some breathing room between fifth-place Milan. (Which is important because there are still off-field matters to be determined.) Twitter questions — including what might be wrong with Juventus’ strikers, what to do with Dusan Vlahovic this summer, how might the midfield needs be addressed this summer and what the heck is there to do about VAR and semi-automated technology these days. Mon, 15 May 2023 - 151 - The Old Lady Speaks, Episode 148: Juve get a big-time win over Atalanta
Juventus were able to slay one of their recent boogeymen with a successful trip to Bergamo, sending the Bianconeri into second place as the race for a top four spot heats up with four games to go in the 2022-23 season. On this week’s episode of The Old Lady Speaks Podcast, we discuss: Takeaways from the week that was — how scared we are about Juventus messing things up with Samuel Iling-Junior, how nice it is to have some squad depth at this time of the season and it’s nice to have it at Max Allegri’s disposal, and Mattia De Sciglio’s season-ending injury on magnifies how Juve’s depth at fullback/wingback is not up to par. Juventus beat Lecce. Good times! Juventus also beat Atalanta. Even better times! There were some good things to come out of the 2-0 win over Atalanta despite seeing La Dea record a whole lot of shots but really not put much on target. Looking ahead to Thursday’s first leg of the Europa League semifinal against Sevilla, the masters of the competition who have found form after a managerial change. Looking at the rumors that Juventus could have a new sporting director in relatively short order, with the Bianconeri reportedly holding talks with Napoli head honcho Cristiano Giuntoli. Mon, 08 May 2023 - 150 - The Old Lady Speaks, Episode 147: Good riddance to an awful month of April
Things aren’t getting much better for Juventus, with Inter ousting them from the Coppa Italia and the overall product on the field making more than just supporters of the club grumpy and wanting a change for the better. On this week’s episode of The Old Lady Speaks Podcast, we discuss: Takeaways from the week that was — including how the hopping and the jumping on penalties is just becoming very tiresome and how continuing to use players like Federico Chiesa out of their best position has also become very tiresome. The Coppa Italia semifinal at the San Siro was very, very bad. Where Max Allegri got it very, very wrong against Inter and how it played right into the hands of Simone Inzaghi. Things were improved against Bologna over the weekend, but Juventus still dropped points. It was a game Juve should have won, but their finishing in front of goal was not very good — at all. Twitter questions — including if we were upset about Juve not totally pushing for a second goal against Bologna after tying up the game, what the “project” at Juventus would look like by the end of the 2023-24 season if Max Allegri stays around, if starting at Twitter is better than watching Juventus these days, if any Juve players have embraced the city of Turin like Federico Bernardeschi has embraced Toronto and if there can just be a collective hug for Juventus fans after the last few months. Mon, 01 May 2023 - 149 - The Old Lady Speaks, Episode 146: Juve get their points back, but lose again in Serie A
It was a wild week both on and off the field for Juventus, seeing their points penalty temporarily retracted right before their decisive Europa League quarterfinal and then falling at home in a controversy-filled loss to Napoli. On this week’s episode of The Old Lady Speaks Podcast, we discuss: Takeaways from the week that was — including how Napoli has the championship luck on their side like Juve had for the better part of the 2010s when they were on the Scudetto streak, how Max Allegri deserves credit for going against the perception of himself and giving a handful of young players a chance, and how it’s impossible to not feel so bad for the group of Juventus’ forwards. Juventus got their 15 points back as their appeal to CONI was successful and their points penalty was temporarily overturned. All of this came about two hours before kickoff against Sporting in the second leg of the Europa League quarterfinals. All of a couple of hours after the 15-point penalty appeal decision, Juve went out and took the field against Sporting and advanced to the Europa League semifinals. The week concluded with Juventus falling to soon-to-be Serie A champions Napoli at the Allianz Stadium on a night in which they could have snatch-and-grabbed their way to three points but saw VAR be the ultimate enemy again. Twitter questions — including just how washed Juan Cuadrado appears to be and why Angel Di Maria has suddenly cooled off form-wise. Mon, 24 Apr 2023 - 148 - The Old Lady Speaks, Episode 145: Is the Europa League Juve’s only hope?
Juventus holds a slim lead over Sporting in the Europa League quarterfinals heading into Thursday’s second leg, but things domestically aren’t looking as great as we await word of the points penalty appeal. On this week’s episode of The Old Lady Speaks Podcast, we discuss: Takeaways from the week that was — how some of us never want to see Leandro Paredes play for Juventus the rest of the season, how Danilo has become a secret midfielder of sorts during the last couple of games, and the schedule crunch is very much on for Juventus and how Sunday’s loss to Sassuolo (as well as other Serie A teams who are still alive in Europe) started to show some cracks. Thoughts on Thursday’s win over Sporting in the first leg of the Europa League quarterfinals. Thoughts on Sunday’s loss to Sassuolo that served as the latest hit to Juventus’ chances of finishing in the top four if the 15-point penalty is to remain. Twitter questions — including the form of Filip Kostic, why Juventus don’t press higher and take advantage of the pace of the center backs, #DeZerbi in if it’s #AllegriOut, and what are our predictions for the next few games on all three fronts. Mon, 17 Apr 2023 - 147 - The Old Lady Speaks, Episode 144: Are Juve falling back into old habits?
Some of Juventus’ most notable qualities under Max Allegri — and maybe not in a good way — showed their faces this past week as Juve could only manage a draw with Inter in the Coppa Italia and lost to Lazio at the Stadio Olimpico. This week on The Old Lady Speaks Podcast, we discuss: Takeaways from the week that was — including how Juve are picking a poor time to have a run of poor performances coming out of the international break and how we hope that Juventus and Max Allegri come up with (or rediscover) a Plan B on how to try and beat teams. The racism problem in Italy is becoming such a problem that we’ve reached the point of it not being a surprise anymore when a player gets racially abused during a game. We start the on-field talk with what happened first this past week with Juventus’ 1-1 draw against Inter in the first leg of the Coppa Italia semifinals. Or, just two flawed teams crashing into each other. We shift the on-field talk to what happened against Lazio over the weekend and how, a lot like against Inter, it was a missed chance for Juventus to do something positive. Instead, for a large majority of Saturday night’s game, Juve’s play was anything but positive. Seriously, what the heck were those tactics? Some quick thoughts on the upcoming matchup on Thursday night against Sporting in the first leg of the Europa League quarterfinals. Twitter questions — including (sarcastically) asking if Adrien Rabiot should get a new kit number if he signs a new contract, (sarcastically) asking if Mattia De Sciglio would have made any sort of difference against Lazio, and why pondering why Max Allegri continues to a ultra-conservative style when his team playing more aggressively worked so well in the final 20 minutes against Lazio. Mon, 10 Apr 2023 - 146 - The Old Lady Speaks, Episode 143: Taking positives out of a drab Juve win
Juventus returned to the field with a relatively bland win over Hellas Verona, but that doesn’t mean that there were a few players who continued their strong play as bigger and more important games approach. On this week’s episode of The Old Lady Speaks Podcast, we discuss: Takeaways from the week that was — including Dusan Vlahovic and his tendency to fall into complaining to the refs very easily, and how Mattia De Sciglio is still very much there and getting playing time and not exactly anything of note to the table. Because Juventus’ win over Hellas Verona was quite forgettable in terms of the overall performance, we decided to something a little different this week. That involves spotlighting a few players who we feel like are playing quite well right now. First up, it’s Manuel Locatelli! Next up, it’s Federico Gatti! Twitter questions — including if Federico Gatti has done enough to get more “big game” starts going forward this season and where we want the biggest core of Italians to be when it comes to a positional group. Mon, 03 Apr 2023 - 145 - The Old Lady Speaks, Episode 142: The April gauntlet awaits Juventus
Juventus finished its March slate of games on a high note. But the Bianconeri face a daunting month of April that will play a big role in determining whether or not they have a chance to win silverware this season. On this week’s episode of The Old Lady Speaks Podcast, we discuss: A very, very important month of April is almost upon — and some of Juventus’ most important players in the attacking phase are set for crucial exams at J Medical. If Filip Kostic is out for any significant number of games in April, does Max Allegri play it safe on the left wing or roll the dice with Samuel Iling-Junior? The amount of games in the month of April is A LOT, and that is something that a team like Juventus that has seen its depth come and go at various points throughout the season doesn’t exactly inspire a lot of confidence. Two legs against Inter and two legs against Sporting all within a couple of weeks? That’s tough! Antonio Conte left Tottenham by “mutual consent” right before we hit record, so we talked a little bit about the guy who won a couple of Serie A titles at Juventus. It’s an international break, folks. You can follow us — or send us questions — on Twitter @JuventusNation or on Facebook as well as the Fans First Sports Network @FansFirstSN. Mon, 27 Mar 2023 - 144 - The Old Lady Speaks, Episode 141: Juve finish up March in a big, big way
With big wins in Serie A and in the Europa League, Juventus heads into the first international break of the calendar year feeling pretty good about things as the club awaits the points penalty appeal verdict to come down. On this week’s episode of The Old Lady Speaks Podcast, we discuss: What a good week that was! Takeaways from said week — including Juventus will be qualifying for Europe come the end of the season, Manuel Locatelli has found his footing at the base of the Juve midfield as a regista and is in a nice run of form, and “Federico Gatti, man.” Thoughts on Juventus’ Derby d’Italia win over Inter at the San Siro. The way Juventus played things and Max Allegri’s tactics were pretty well executed against Inter, with the team being progressive with their pressing rather than being reactive like we’ve seen so many times before. Even though the final score was 1-0, this was a pretty good game between Juventus and Inter. We debate who the man of the match was against Inter, with a special shoutout for Nicolo Fagioli, who is playing like a sure-thing starter these days. Thoughts on Juventus’ Europa League Round of 16 second leg win over Freiburg and the quarterfinal draw, with Sporting the next one up on the schedule for Max Allegri’s squad in Europe. Twitter questions — just how massive Max Allegri has been, if Nicolo Fagioli 100% a baller or 100% a baller and a lock to be a starter going forward this season, and what has Federico Gatti done to try and ensure himself more playing time going forward the rest of the season. Mon, 20 Mar 2023 - 143 - The Old Lady Speaks, Episode 140: Juve’s Europa League hopes are still alive
Juventus won both of its games this past week in very different kinds of ways, but face some tough sledding in the final stretch going into the first international break of 2023. On this week’s episode of The Old Lady Speaks Podcast, we discuss: Takeaways form the week that was — including how football is still very much a game of moments both good and bad, how Matias Soulé was a very good performer off the bench against Sampdoria, and how Dusan Vlahovic is just not having a very good time right now. Thoughts on Juventus’ 1-0 win over Freiburg in the first leg of the Europa League Round of 16. What went right for Juve? What went wrong for Juve? What needs to change entering Thursday’s second leg in Germany? The question to end all questions: Will Juventus get past Freiburg and advance to the Europa League quarterfinals? Juventus’ defensive hopes in the second leg against Freiburg might come down to Leonardo Bonucci and/or Daniele Rugani. Not the best situation. How nervous did Juve’s blackout defensively make us for the rest of Sunday’s win over Sampdoria? (Hint: It was quite a bit!) But Juventus got the three points, so everything wasn’t so bad, right? Twitter questions — including the return o prodigal son, why shouldn’t Juventus give Paul Pogba’s money to Adrien Rabiot, is Sunday’s performance a good or bad sign for Dusan Vlahovic, if the crew has any game day superstitions and some talk about the BBC and Gary Linekar. Mon, 13 Mar 2023 - 142 - The Old Lady Speaks, Episode 139: Roma beats Juve at their own game
Juventus used a furious comeback to get a win in the Turin derby earlier in the week but couldn’t replicate things when the Bianconeri made the trip to Rome on Sunday night. On this week’s episode of The Old Lady Speaks Podcast, we discuss: Takeaways from the week that was — including that Max Allegri’s Juventus got out-Max Allegri’d by Jose Mourinho and Roma on Sunday, Juventus-Roma was emblematic of why the board of directors got rid of Max Allegri the first time around, a cry from Chuks to do away with zonal marking like what we saw didn’t work against Torino earlier in the week. Juventus’ comeback against Torino was good. Juventus’ failed comeback against Roma was not good. A deeper dive into what went wrong for Juve in the loss to Roma, one that probably killed any lasting Champions League hopes if the 15-point penalty remains in effect. How games like Sunday’s against Roma just magnify how slim Juventus’ margin for error is and what has to change going forward if this team wants to win any trophies. One main Twitter questions this week — what’s up with Dusan Vlahovic and how much of it is the player and how much of it is the manager’s system holding him back? Mon, 06 Mar 2023 - 141 - The Old Lady Speaks, Episode 138: Angel Di Maria is a wonderful human
In the one game that Juventus played last week, Juventus’ veteran Argentine winger was at his world-class best, with Angel Di Maria showing just how good he can still be in leading his team into the Europa League Round of 16. On this week’s episode of The Old Lady Speaks Podcast, we discuss: A quick update on the future of the podcast. (Don’t worry, we’re not going away!) Takeaways from the week that was — including what Angel Di Maria’s position on his field really is and what his best position on the field really is, and how Juve loanee Andrea Cambiaso absolutely bossed Bologna’s win over Inter on Sunday afternoon. The Europa League dream is still alive, everybody! Everybody talks about how good Angel Di Maria has been since coming back from the World Cup. Any concerns about Di Maria just kinda cruising once he came back from the World Cup were completely unwarranted because he’s been great since the restart. (If only we could say the same about his countryman Leandro Paredes...) Taking a look at Juventus’ opponent in the Europa League Round of 16, Freiburg, and what kind of challenge that they might pose in the coming weeks. Twitter questions — including what Juve need to see happen in the Coppa Italia to qualify for the Europa League next season, who could realistically replace Max Allegri this summer if the #AllegriOut contingent get their way, and what are the latest updates surrounding the financial investigations into Juventus. Mon, 27 Feb 2023 - 140 - The Old Lady Speaks, Episode 137: Juve’s Europa League spot is on the ropes
It was a week in which Juventus didn’t lose either of its two games, but it’s not like Max Allegri’s squad was all that great, either, with European hopes again down to one singular 90-minute stretch. On this week’s episode of The Old Lady Speaks Podcast, we discuss: Takeaways from the week that was — including how Juventus should offer Angel Di Maria a big bag of money for a contract in the 2023-24 season and force him to say no, how Max Allegri is coaching more and more defensive (and we didn’t think that was possible), and how Juve continues to drop to the level of their competition a lot of the time. Just what went wrong for Juventus against Nantes in the first leg of the Europa League playoff round. Just what went wrong for Juventus — despite winning! — against Spezia over the weekend as the Bianconeri moved up a few more spots in the Serie A table. Just how much was Juve’s play against Nantes and then Spezia on Max Allegri and how much was it on the players? How optimistic are we about Juve getting past Nantes and advancing to the Europa League Round of 16? (Warning: previous Juventus struggles in European competition is discussed.) Twitter questions — including the noticing of the latest blunder from Leandro Paredes, should Federico Gatti be starting more in games where Juve faces opponents like Spezia, what’s the realistic expectation for some of the youngsters in this season’s squad to stick long term, and what should the formation be going forward knowing that Allegri has worked in a 3-4-2-1 recently. Mon, 20 Feb 2023 - 139 - The Old Lady Speaks, Episode 136: Juve sweep the week, but issues still remain
Juventus picked up wins over Salernitana and Fiorentina, but they were two very different kinds of victories with two very different kinds of performances from Max Allegri’s squad. On this week’s episode of The Old Lady Speaks Podcast, we discuss: Takeaways from the week that was — including how we keep waiting for Juventus to beat the teams it should beat consistently and not play to the level of its opponents and how Max Allegri clearly reads BWRAO because Angel Di Maria and Federico Chiesa both played from the start against Fiorentina. Thoughts on Juventus’ 1-0 win over Fiorentina, a game in which a lot of things happened even though a decent amount of said things weren’t exactly all that good. The way Max Allegri approached the second half against Fiorentina is nothing new, but it continues to be something that is putting points his team in tough situations when trying to close out games. Thoughts on Dusan Vlahovic’s return from injury. Thoughts on the attacking trident of Vlahovic, Federico Chiesa and Angel Di Maria that Allegri rolled out against Fiorentina on Sunday night. Mon, 13 Feb 2023 - 138 - The Old Lady Speaks, Episode 135: We continue to wait for Paul Pogba to play
Paul Pogba was arguably the biggest name that Juventus brought in this past summer, but the Frenchman’s injury troubles have only continued since returning to Turin. And now, with February here, we still have yet to see Juve’s No. 10 play in a competitive game this season. On this week’s episode of The Old Lady Speaks Podcast, we discuss: Takeaways from the week that was — including how the cup competitions (and mainly the Coppa Italia) are the only things that really matters this season because of what’s happened the last few weeks how sometimes simplicity is the best when it comes to Juventus’ players following Max Allegri’s notable screaming at Angel Di Maria, and how winning the Coppa Italia is there for the taking. The current injury situation surrounding Paul Pogba is sad because all of us were looking forward to seeing him back at Juventus again. The problem, however, is that he has yet to appear in a competitive game and his comeback to Juve has been marked by him not playing more than anything else. In short, Pog’s still not back. And it's now February. Thoughts on the Coppa Italia quarterfinal win over Lazio seeing as the Coppa Italia is becoming more and more the best chance for Juventus to get into Europe next season. You gotta admit that there’s at least some sort of comedy in the fact that Juventus could potentially be a relegation battler or even get relegated and be in Europe next season. Twitter questions — including how Juventus might be able to get out of this mess, just how much job security Max Allegri might have the rest of the season or into the summertime, and just how good or bad the current version(s) of offside technology has gotten. Tue, 07 Feb 2023 - 137 - The Old Lady Speaks, Episode 134: Juve’s January goes from bad to worse
Juventus’ winless streak was extended to three games after Monza rolled into the Allianz Stadium and claimed another historic win over the struggling Italian giants. On this week’s episode of The Old Lady Speaks Podcast, we discuss: Takeaways from the week that was — including how Juventus is (quickly) regressing back down to the mean after the eight-game winning streak and how Juventus is very quickly becoming its own worst enemy on a regular basis once again. Juventus’ performance against Monza was ... not very good at all. And this is what happens when Max Allegri chooses to go old school and sit back and try to counter against a team that loves to possess the ball and has gotten better as the season has gone on. Allegri choosing to play like this is not sustainable for much of the season simply because Serie A is evolving and he continues to show that he wants no part in that evolution. In what looks like the lone “big” transfer of the January window, Weston McKennie is headed to Leeds United on loan with an option to buy. How would we sum up McKennie’s tenure at Juventus? Twitter questions — including there being any worries about a transfer ban coming down, what the new Juventus front office can do to get this thing turned around, if this is the worst Juventus team of the modern era and what’s a good drink to mix together to try and get through the current state of Juventus. Mon, 30 Jan 2023 - 136 - The Old Lady Speaks, Episode 133: Juve’s unrelenting winter just got worse
A week that started with us hoping Juventus needed to pick itself up off the floor following a terrible loss to Napoli only saw things get worse off the field when it comes to the ongoing capital gains investigation. On this week’s episode of The Old Lady Speaks Podcast, we discuss: A quick update on the status of the podcast amidst the most recent round of cuts around SB Nation by Vox Media, most notably within the NFL and MLS communities as well as the entire podcasting network. Further updates will be available in the coming weeks. Takeaways from the week that was — including Juventus starting to shoot itself in the foot again, how it’s suddenly all about the cup competitions (Coppa Italia and Europa League) now, and how Bremer got back to being Good Bremer against Atalanta after being Bad Bremer against Napoli. A deep dive into what the heck happened on Friday when Juventus was docked 15 points and the impact that it will have on the rest of the 2022-23 season. How did Juventus get here? Why did Juventus get here? How the heck can Juventus get out of this and start to prevent another major crisis like this from happening again? As much as many are trying to pin these financial irregularities solely on Juventus, this is very much a sport-wide issue and everybody knows it. The difference is that Juve is a publicly traded company while others are not — and that ended up being a big sticking point in the investigation. Talk of actual on-field things — namely Juventus’ wild 3-3 draw with Atalanta over the weekend in the first game since the 15-point penalty was handed down. Hypothetical question: Would you be OK with Angel Di Maria sticking around for another season? Not-so-hypothetical question: Nicolo Fagioli has to be a regular starter now, doesn’t he? No Twitter questions this week, but we do promise they will return for our final episode in the month of January. You can follow us — or send us questions — on Twitter @JuventusNation or on Facebook. Tue, 24 Jan 2023 - 135 - The Old Lady Speaks, Episode 132: Juve come crashing back down to earth
On a night in which Juventus had the chance to show that it belonged in the Scudetto race, Max Allegri’s squad went out against Napoli and suffered its worse loss in three decades, falling 10 points behind the league leaders in the process. On this week’s episode of The Old Lady Speaks Podcast, we discuss: OOF. Takeaways from Juventus’ dismantling at the hands of Napoli — including Napoli is a really, really good team and they are everything that we wish Juventus could play like, maybe this loss to Napoli is something that could bring the heat back to Max Allegri’s seat as manager, and the issue of Federico Chiesa and where Allegri is going to play him. We play a little game: What’s one word to describe Juventus’ performance against Napoli? Where Max Allegri got it wrong against Napoli. What the heck is Max Allegri going to do with Federico Chiesa, his team’s best player who doesn’t really have a spot in the 3-5-2 formation that Allegri is dead set on using right now. Why has Allegri suddenly gone away from using the likes of Nicolo Fagioli and Fabio Miretti after they were a big reason why Juve went on their eight-game winning streak. Are we worried about Bremer? (Hint: No, we aren’t.) Twitter questions! You can follow us — or send us questions — on Twitter @JuventusNation or on Facebook. You can also follow us on our new Instagram page, too! Mon, 16 Jan 2023 - 134 - The Old Lady Speaks, Episode 131: Juve start 2023 with a pair of wins
Things might not have been very pretty, but Juventus has taken advantage of Napoli’s first slip up and moved into second place in Serie A entering this week’s big showdown in Naples. On this week’s episode of The Old Lady Speaks Podcast, we discuss: Juve keep winning! Takeaways from the first week back in action after a month and a half away due to the World Cup — including how it might not be about how you start the season but how you rebound from it, why Juve’s play still might have us a little trepidatious about things, and holy bleeping bleep that assist from Federico Chiesa. Seriously, Juve keep winning! As nice as it is to see Juve keep winning games and adding to the winning streak, just how sustainable is this brand of football knowing that much more attack-minded opponents are coming up on the schedule. What a win (or a draw) against Napoli would mean for Juventus, its Scudetto chances and for the rest of the top of the Serie A table. Federico Chiesa is back, his assist against Udinese most certainly shows that, and he’s obviously going to be vital for Juve’s success going forward in Serie A and the Europa League. With Arek Milik’s goal on Wednesday against Cremonese, Juve have another free kick option that we didn’t necessarily knew they had before that game. Twitter questions — including how Juventus can generate some more offense and what it will take to do that, has Max Allegri’s recent run of success made up for the beginning to the season and the Champions League struggles, and if Danilo has proven to be the best piece of business Fabio Paratici did during his time in Turin. A few thoughts on the passing of former Juve captain Gianluca Vialli. You can follow us — or send us questions — on Twitter @JuventusNation or on Facebook.
