Thu, 25 Nov 2021 - 542 - DO WE NEED A WOMENS' BILL OF RIGHTS
We live in a supposedly equal society but the gender pay gap is currently 8% in favour of men; there’s plenty of evidence showing that government Austerity measures disproportionately affected women; while the debate around the murder of Sarah Everard highlighted how harassment, abuse and violence have become normalised - so do we need a Womens’ Bill Of Rights? It’s 35 years since the UK ratified CEDAW -United Nations Convention on the Elimination Of All Forms Of Discrimination Against Women – which sets out a comprehensive framework for tackling gender inequality. But critics say that because it’s never been embedded in a law – unlike the European Convention on Human Rights - it’s an inefficient tool for challenging l government decisions which disproportionately affect women and girls. With Dr Jocelynne Scott, President of CEDAW In Law, and Sian Norris, Chief European and Social Affairs Correspondent for Byline Times. We also hear from Shirley, who didn't wish to use her surname. He has also written about the legacy of slavery in his book The Enlightenment Abolished; Citizens of Britishness – and revealed that his own ancestors were bought and sold. He's also had one of Scotland's most prominent landmarks in his sights – the Melville Monument in Edinburgh’s New Town erected in honour of Henry Dundas, the first Viscount Melville, who successfully argued for the gradual – rather than immediate – abolition of slavery. Wed, 28 Jul 2021 - 538 - ARE WE BUILDING TOO MANY HOUSES?
It might seem counter intuitive at a time when millions of people can’t get a foot on the housing ladder - or afford a decent place to rent - but this week the Byline Times podcast assembles evidence to suggest that too many houses are being built in England. The government has set a target of 300,000 new homes a year which could result in the creation of ghost estates - not to mention the despoilation of beautiful countryside. New house building is one of the shibboleths of the modern Conservative party - and its supporters in the media, who are obsessed with first time buyers and rising house prices. But concern over planning reforms that would make it easier to build on green belt land were also widely cited as a reason for the Tories defeat in recent the Chesham and Amersham by election. Thu, 17 Dec 2020 - 531 - NHS WHISTLEBLOWERS; A MATTER OF LIFE AND DEATH
NHS staff who wanted to blow the whistle on poor practice among their colleagues were promised a new deal in 2015 when Sir Robert Francis recommended the creation of the National Guardians Office, which encouraged the "freedom to speak up." This followed scandals at Stafford Hospital and Gosport War Memorial Hospital where concerns raised by workers were ignored - with deadly consequences. Despite the optimism created by the arrival of the NGO, Health Service staff who speak out in public still risk being victimised as Stephen Colegrave has revealed in a series of articles for Byline Times. Thu, 27 Oct 2022 - 523 - The Dark Heart of Trussonomics
In conversation with Adrian Goldberg, Nafeez Ahmed explores the ideas circulating amongst some senior Conservatives including Prime Minister Liz Truss. Nafeez identifies how Charles Murray, who promotes what Nafeez describes as "scientific racism", has been allowed a platform within the Tory mainstream. Murray argues that some groups in society fare less well than others because they are genetically inferior to others - which leads him to radical economic prescriptions. There's no suggestion that Truss herself or any of her ministers believes in or promotes eugenics, but some of the government’s thinking appears to be influenced by his work. Sun, 24 May 2026 - 490 - Is Birmingham 'Ungovernable?' And What Does It Say About The Rest Of The UK?
Is Birmingham the UK’s most ungovernable city? And what does the recent election tell is about politics in this country more widely? In the recent elections, when the entire Council was up, Labour lost control, winning just 17 seats of the 101 seats; Reform emerged as the largest party with 23 with the Greens coming second with 19 seats… So no party has a majority; Reform has acknowledged that it won’t find enough coalition partners; Labour has said it wants time to reflect on the result and rebuild trust with voters, making a partnership between The Greens,Lib Dems and a block of mostly pro Gaza independents the likeliest coalition to run Britain’s biggest local authority. It sounds like a recipe for chaos in a city where bin workers have been on strike for more than a year… Adrian Goldberg hears from Mike Olley a former Labour councillor who runs the Midlands Grit substack and Corinne Fowler, a newly elected Green councillor in the city… Learn more about your ad choices.
